Effects of photoperiod and temperature on vegetative growth of seedling populations and clones of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) originating from various latitudes (58°48'–69°54'N) and altitudes (up to 1100 m above sea level) were studied in a phytotron. Dry matter production, stolon elongation, petiole elongation and leaf lamina size were enhanced by long photoperiod. The requirement for long photoperiod increased with decreasing temperature. At 6°C the maximum growth was recorded under 24-h daylength. At 18°C already an increase in photoperiod from 12 to 15 h significantly enhanced growth, and maximum growth was obtained at 21-h photoperiod. The studied populations responded similarly to daylength, and the results did not indicate photoperiodic ecotypes in the material. The southernmost clones and populations generally had the highest dry matter production at all temperature treatments (6–18°C). Variation between clones within one location was, however, significant, and rapidly growing clones were found also in high-latitude locations. Dry matter production was poorly correlated with the morphological characters observed, but in some cases significant correlation with leaf lamina size was found.  相似文献

1. We studied the effects of both acute and chronic exposure of Daphnia pulex to toxic Microcystis aeruginosa . We focused on the effects of Daphnia genotype and temperature (19 and 24 °C).
2. The study revealed variation among ten Daphnia pulex clones in survivorship under acute Microcystis exposure, measured as EC50. An increase in temperature caused a clear decrease in EC50, although the ranking of clones according to sensitivity remained the same at both temperatures.
3. In the chronic exposure of two of the clones, toxic Microcystis reduced survival and reproduction. The two clones differed in their responses, indicating different means of coping with toxic cyanobacteria. Toxic cyanobacteria reduced slightly more at 24 °C than 19 °C.

Abstract 1. Patterns of male production and life-cycle variation were investigated in the aphid Sitobion avenae . Seventy-seven field-collected clones were subjected to a 14 °C short day-length regime to assess their reproductive modes, and three clones were used to study life-cycle inheritance. A further analysis assessed the cost of male production.
2. In comparison with those from East Anglia, there were more holocyclic and intermediate clones found in Scottish populations, and they produced significantly more mating females. In total, 44% of clones were androcyclic.
3. The inheritance of life cycle showed a greater level of complexity than could be achieved by previously suggested monohybrid inheritance mechanisms.
4. Holocyclic and intermediate clones produced a higher proportion of males than did androcyclic clones. Inter-clonal differences were reflected in the pattern of male production in the reproductive sequence.
5. A significant cost was associated with male production in terms of a reduction in both fecundity and total offspring biomass.
6. Winged females rarely gave birth to males but the pattern of mating female production differed between holocyclic and intermediate clones.
7. Patterns of male and mating female production by the different types of clone may be related to different advantages and disadvantages of dispersal and inbreeding.
8. Recent models of aphid overwintering could be enhanced by consideration of issues raised in this study, such as the cost of male production, the inheritance of life cycle, and the patterns of sexual morph production.  相似文献

The life cycle of Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae) has been recognized as holocyclic. This study examined photoperiod and temperature effects on fecundity and sexual morph production using six A. glycines clones collected in northern, eastern, western, and southern Japan. Results showed that the six clones included anholocyclic and intermediate ones. Low temperature and short photoperiod negatively affected fecundity, except for one clone with anholocyclic life cycle. Possible mechanisms for the year-round parthenogenetic production of the anholocyclic clone are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Adelges cooleyi (Gil.) was rarely found in the top-most whorl of shoots in its host plant Engelmann spruce.
2. The survivorship of the few Adelges fundatrices which did colonize the top whorl was at or near zero for the 3 years in which survivorship was assessed, while survivorship in the bottom whorls was at least 60%.
3. In contrast, when an Adelges fundatrix did survive in the top whorl, her growth and reproductive output, and the growth of her progeny, the gallicolae, were at least double that of bottom whorl fundatrices.
4. The distribution of fundatrices within spruce trees was strongly correlated ( R 2=0.934) with fundatrix fitness (=survivorship × fecundity × growth).
5. We hypothesize that the vigorous growth of top whorl shoots promotes Adelges growth and fecundity, but the earlier growth of these shoots results in low temperature mortality of fundatrices.  相似文献

大猿叶虫Colaphellus bowringiBaly是我国十字花科蔬菜上的一种重要害虫,以成虫在土壤中越冬和越夏,滞育发生主要受温度和光周期调节。本文就光周期和温度对滞育后成虫生物学特性的影响进行了研究。结果表明,在25℃下,光周期(L14∶D10和L12∶D12)对成虫滞育后的存活率、寿命、日平均产卵量、总产卵量均无显著影响。在长光照(L14∶D10)下,温度18℃、22℃和25℃)对滞育后成虫的生物学特性具有明显的影响;随温度的降低,总产卵量呈下降趋势,平均产卵量显著降低,雌虫滞育后寿命显著延长,18℃下少数个体能被诱导再次滞育。  相似文献

Soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, is now widely established in soybean, Glycine max L., production areas of the northern United States and southern Canada and is becoming an important economic pest. Temperature effect on soybean aphid fecundity and survivorship is not well understood. We determined the optimal temperature for soybean aphid growth and reproduction on soybean under controlled conditions. We constructed life tables for soybean aphid at 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees C with a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. Population growth rates were greatest at 25 degrees C. As temperature increased, net fecundity, gross fecundity, generation time, and life expectancy decreased. The prereproductive period did not differ between 20 and 30 degrees C; however, at 30 degrees C aphids required more degree-days (base 8.6 degrees C) to develop. Nymphs exposed to 35 degrees C did not complete development, and all individuals died within 11 d. Reproductive periods were significantly different at all temperatures, with aphids reproducing longer and producing more progeny at 20 and 25 degrees C than at 30 or 35 degrees C. Using a modification of the nonlinear Logan model, we estimated upper and optimal developmental thresholds to be 34.9 and 27.8 degrees C, respectively. At 25 degrees C, aphid populations doubled in 1.5 d; at 20 and 30 degrees C, populations doubled in 1.9 d.  相似文献

We investigated four predictions about how temperature, photoperiod and sex affect the life history plasticity and foraging activity of a damselfly. (i) As predicted, increased temperatures increased foraging activity and growth rates, but in contrast with the prediction, late photoperiod (high time stress) did not affect foraging activity and growth rate. (ii) Unexpectedly, the increase in growth rate at increasing temperatures was not larger under high time stress. (iii) As predicted, age and size at emergence decreased at higher temperatures and at the late photoperiod. Temperature-induced life history shifts were direct or the result of behavioural growth mediation depending on the temperature range. Photoperiod-induced life history shifts were direct. (iv) As predicted, males emerged before females but at a smaller size. The degree of sexual size dimorphism was influenced by the joint effects of temperature and photoperiod. We could only detect genetic variation in size plasticity to photoperiod. The match between the sex-specific life history responses to temperature and photoperiod and predictions by relevant optimality models suggests adaptive life history plasticity to these variables.  相似文献

1. Clones of Sitobion avenae from the west of France exhibited four types of responses in growth chambers to short days and low temperatures: in addition to permanently parthenogenetic clones (anholocyclic) and clones producing both males and parthenogenetic females (androcyclic), lineages producing both mating females and males were categorized into holocyclic and intermediate types, the latter investing into both sexual and parthenogenetic reproduction.
2. Holocyclic, intermediate and androcyclic clones were tested outdoors for sexual production in autumn and results were consistent with those obtained in growth chambers. Eggs from holocyclic and intermediate clone selfings were laid and hatched for most crosses.
3. Reciprocal crosses within and between life cycle variants showed no effect of the type of cross on the number of eggs laid per mating female, their hatching success, or the survival and fecundity of the parthenogenetic females born from eggs (fundatrices).
4. Eggs from intermediate × intermediate crosses hatched 20 days earlier than those involving at least one holocyclic parent. It is suggested that this short diapausing time gives a selective advantage to intermediate clones in oceanic climates, which could compensate for their lower sexual production in autumn.
5. Selfed offspring showed inbreeding depression, which seems to be common in non host-alternating aphids.
6. Mating with androcyclic males affects percentage (lower) and time (longer) of egg hatching, but not the other investigated traits.
7. The significance of intragenotypic strategy mixing in androcyclic and intermediate clones is discussed as an overall adaptation to the uncertainty of winter climate in oceanic zones.  相似文献

This study analyzed changes of life history parameters of a Daphnia pulicaria clone in response to increasing (spring conditions) versus decreasing (fall conditions) photoperiod and low and high food concentrations in maternal and offspring environments. One treatment increased the photoperiod from 12 to 16 h at a rate of 3 min per day, while the other treatment decreased the photoperiod from 16 to 12 h at the same rate. We also used two food concentrations: low (0.2 mg C/l) and high (0.5 mg C/l). Maturation time, first clutch size, survivorship, and somatic growth in offspring depended on the direction of photoperiodic changes for Daphnia grown under high food concentration. Natural-like changes of photoperiod on life history parameters and abrupt changes resulted in similar effects on life history parameters of Daphnia (see Alekseev and Lampert 2004 Hydrobilogia 526:225–230).  相似文献

Immature male and female and maturing male Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus were held at constant temperature (4° C) under either simulated natural photoperiod (nLD) or constant photoperiod (12:12 LD) conditions, and feed intake and growth were monitored at monthly intervals over 13 months. Food was supplied in excess during a 5-h period each day, and daily consumption was determined using X-radiography. Food consumption and growth of both immature and maturing fish showed distinct seasonal cycles irrespective of photoperiod treatment. Feed intake and growth rates were highest in mid-summer and lowest in autumn. The fact that seasonal cycles persisted under constant photoperiod (12:12 LD) and temperature conditions suggests that circannual rhythms of food consumption and growth exist in the absence of seasonal changes in these environmental cues. The data support the view that seasonal changes in food consumption and growth in the Arctic charr are driven by endogenous rhythms. Reductions in feeding and growth in autumn occurred about 1 month earlier in the maturing males than in the immature fish. Males that matured under the 12:12 LD regime displayed a growth cycle that was delayed in comparison with that shown by the maturing males held under nLD.  相似文献

Abstract. Growth chamber experiments were conducted to determine what environmental factors induce the development of sexuparae in root-feeding colonies of the aphid Pemphigus betae Doane (Aphididae: Pemphiginae). Experimental colonies were derived from clones that had been reproducing for at least 15 months under constant laboratory conditions. At constant 20–23oC, sexuparae were almost never produced regardless of the level of crowding or photoperiod. In contrast, every culture of several clones produced sexuparae when subjected to temperatures alternating between 20 and 15oC during the light and dark phases respectively. This fluctuating temperature regime resulted in sexupara production regardless of photoperiod. All cultures also produced some sexuparae when cultures were kept in constant darkness at temperatures that were either alternated between 20 and 15oC or kept constant at 15oC. Constant 17oC resulted in sexupara production in most cultures. At 17oC, experimental manipulation of densities within cultures showed that crowding promotes sexupara production. Thus, within the range of conditions occurring at the time of sexupara induction in the field, photoperiod has no effect on sexupara production, temperature below a threshold between 17 and 20–23oC triggers sexupara production, and crowding promotes sexupara production but only if temperature is low enough.  相似文献

新菠萝灰粉蚧是近年在我国新发现的一种重要外来入侵害虫,温度是决定新菠萝灰粉蚧能否建立稳定种群的最基本因素.本研究以南瓜作为寄主,探索恒温条件对新菠萝灰粉蚧生长发育和繁殖的影响.在17、20、23、26、29和32 ℃,光周期14L∶10D,相对湿度(75±5)%的实验室条件下,测定了新菠萝灰粉蚧各虫态的发育历期、发育速率、存活率和繁殖力,组建了新菠萝灰粉蚧的实验种群生命表.结果表明: 在20~29 ℃,各虫态的发育历期均随温度的升高而缩短,在20 ℃下雌、雄若虫期的发育历期最长,分别为46.95和50.26 d;29 ℃时雌虫若虫期的发育历期最短,为20.28 d;而雄虫若虫期在32 ℃时最短,为20.70 d.各虫态的温度与发育速率的关系均符合二次回归关系.此外,温度显著影响新菠萝灰粉蚧的存活率,在29 ℃时雌、雄若虫期的存活率均最高,分别为70.3%和69.3%;雌虫世代的发育起点温度为13.80 ℃,有效积温为491.50日·度;雄虫世代的发育起点温度为11.61 ℃,有效积温为388.85日·度.新菠萝灰粉蚧的产卵前期和成虫寿命随着温度的升高而缩短;成虫产卵量在29 ℃时最高,达每雌442.2粒;最小为20 ℃,仅为每雌111.8粒;29和20 ℃下种群趋势指数分别为168.2和19.1,且在17和32 ℃时,新菠萝灰粉蚧1龄若虫和3龄若虫均表现为生长停滞.说明温度过高或过低均不利于其生长发育.温度对新菠萝灰粉蚧的生长发育、存活、繁殖及种群增长有显著的影响,23~29 ℃是最适宜新菠萝灰粉蚧生长发育和繁殖的温度范围.  相似文献

The optimal temperature and illumination photoperiod requirements for the phototrophic growth of a novel microplantlet suspension culture derived from the macrophytic marine red alga Agardhiella subulata were determined. The optimal growth temperature was 24 degrees C. The effects of illumination light-dark (LD) photoperiod (hour of light:hours of darkness within a 24 h cycle) on biomass production was studied within a bubble-column photobioreactor. The 4.5 cm diameter photobioreactor was maintained at near-saturation conditions with respect to light flux (38 mciromol photons m(-2) s(-1)), nutrient medium delivery (20% nutrient replacement per day), and CO(2) delivery (0.35 mmol CO(2) L(-1) h(-1)) so that the cumulative effects of photodamage on the cell density versus time curve at photoperiods approaching continuous light could be observed. Biomass production was maximized at 16:8 LD, where biomass densities exceeding 3.6 g dry cell mass L(-1) were achieved after 60 days in culture. Biomass production was proportional to photoperiod at low fractional photoperiods (< or =10:14 LD), but high fractional photoperiods approaching continuous light (> or = 20:4 LD) shut down biomass production. Biomass production versus time profiles under resource-saturated cultivation conditions were adequately described by a cumulative photodamage growth model, which coupled reversible photodamage processes to the specific growth rate. Under light-saturated growth conditions, the rate constant for photodamage was kd = 1.17 +/- 0.28 day(-1) (+/-1.0 SE), and the rate constant for photodamage repair was kr = 5.12 +/- 0.95 day(-1) (+/-1.0 SE) at 24 degrees C.  相似文献

Abstract. These experiments are part of a larger study designed to investigate the influence of husbandry parameters on the life history of the apple snail, Marisa cornuarietis . The overall objective of the program is to identify suitable husbandry conditions for maintaining multi-generation populations of this species in the laboratory for use in ecotoxicological testing. In this article, we focus on the effects of photoperiod, temperature, and population density on adult fecundity and juvenile growth. Increasing photoperiod from 12 to 16 h of light per day had no effect on adult fecundity or egg hatching and relatively minor effects on juvenile growth and development. Rearing snails at temperatures between 22°C and 28°C did not influence the rates of egg production or egg clutch size. However, the rates of growth and development (of eggs and juveniles) increased with increasing temperature in this range, and when temperatures were reduced to 22°C egg-hatching success was impaired. Juvenile growth and development were more sensitive to rearing density than adult fecundity traits. On the basis of the present results, we conclude that rearing individuals of M. cornuarietis at a temperature of 25°C, a photoperiod of 12L:12D, and a density of <0.8 snails L−1 (with lower densities for juvenile snails) should provide favorable husbandry conditions for maintaining multi-generation populations of this species.  相似文献

Garlic (Allium sativum L.) genotypes differ considerably in scape length, flowering ability, and seed production. In bolting clones reproductive processes are facilitated by a combination of specific temperature and photoperiod regimes. However, it is yet unclear whether the phase-specific photoperiod effect on florogenesis is universal for all garlic genotypes. We investigated the effect of ambient day length interruption by 10 or 30 days of long photoperiod in ten garlic accessions belonging to four bio-morphological groups. It was evident that garlic genotypes vary significantly in response to long photoperiod, and that in some clones the treatment enhances florogenesis, flower stalk elongation and bulbing. The competition for resources by the simultaneously developing bulb and inflorescence sinks differentially determines the fate of stalk elongation and flower development in the investigated genotypes. It is concluded that florogenesis in garlic can be promoted by exposure to proper environmental stimuli, during pre-planting storage and sprouting to the later growth stages. The genetic variability acquired from sexual reproduction and vegetatively preserved collections can serve in genetic and physiological studies as well as in breeding programs.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The effect on growth and survivorship of the number of Halisidota caryae (Harris) caterpillars in groups feeding on three taxonomically distinct hosts was examined experimentally in the field.
2. Caterpillars grew more rapidly and survived better in larger sized groups than in smaller sized groups.
3. Caterpilliars grew more rapidly and survived better on Carya ovata (Koch) than on Hamamelis virginiana (L) or Quercus velutina (Lam.).
4. There were equal numbers of invertebrate predators on groups of different sizes and thus larger groups had significantly fewer predators per caterpillar than did smaller groups.
5. Invertebrate predators accounted for at least a 10% daily decrease in survivorship.
6. Local movement reduced predation because moving groups had fewer predators than did stationary groups.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. The distribution of mortality within and among groups of immature Leptinotursu juncta (Germar) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) was studied in the field at three points in the life-cycle in order to test whether the fates of individuals occupying the same host plant were non-independent.
2. Studies were conducted on eggs subject to cannibalism and predation, on newly hatched larvae subject to predation, and on older larvae subject to parasitism by Myiophurus doryphorue (Riley), a tachinid fly.
3. At all three points in the life-cycle the variance in group-specific survivorship rates was demonstrated to be significantly greater than expected when individual deaths are distributed randomly among groups, with standardized variances ranging from 42% to 52% of the maximum possible.
4. A statistically significant positive correlation was shown between the number of individuals in a group and the group-specific survivorship rate at all three life stages.
5. The distribution of genetic variants within and among groups of larvae showed the groups to be mixtures of full and half siblings, with an average coefficient of genetic relatedness, r , equal to 0.38.  相似文献
