Waters used in washing, blanching, cooling, and conveying vegetables during processing for freezing were filtered, sterilized, and inoculated with Streptococcus faecalis, S. lactis, or Lactobacillus plantarum. The contents of total nitrogen and total solids were determined, and ninhydrin tests and Benedict's tests for reducing sugars were performed. Substances positive to the ninyhydrin tests and also capable of supporting the growth of the bacteria to high levels of population were found in waters used to blanch cut green beans, but not in the cooling or conveying waters. They were found only in waters following slicing of blanched whole beans. They were also present in waters used in processing purple hull peas at all stages, but only in the waters used to blanch and cool lima beans. The substances were present in waters used to wash and blanch squash, but only in the waters used to blanch greens; they were not found in the cooling waters during the handling of either vegetable. No waters used in the processing of okra yielded a positive ninhydrin test, nor did they support the growth of the lactic acid bacteria.  相似文献

The speciation of 262 strains of group D streptococci isolated from human sources is described. One hundred forty-two isolates from blood cultures were included; 96 of these were submitted as isolates from clinical cases of subacute bacterial endocarditis. The results show that 98 Streptococcus faecalis, 29 S. faecalis var. zymogenes, 44 S. faecalis var. liquefaciens, 27 S. faecium, 13 S. durans, 44 S. bovis, and 7 unspeciated S. bovis-like group D isolates were identified. No S. faecium var. casseliflavus, S. equinus, or S. avium (group Q streptococci) were identified among the human isolates. The speciation procedures and techniques are detailed. The procedures and limitations of the tests used are discussed. Ninety-eight percent of the 262 strains were speciated by a spectrum of tests that allowed us to recognize atypical as well as typical strains within species.  相似文献

The efficacy of fallow and coastal bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) as a rotation crop for control of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita race 1) and soilborne fungi in okra (Hibiscus esculentus cv. Emerald), squash (Cucurbita pepo cv. Dixie Hybrid), and sweet corn (Zea mays cv. Merit) was evaluated in a 3-year field trial. Numbers of M. incognita in the soil and root-gall indices were greater on okra and squash than sweet corn and declined over the years on vegetable crops following fallow and coastal bermudagrass sod. Fusarium oxysporum and Pythium spp. were isolated most frequently from soil and dying okra plants. Numbers of colony-forming units of soilborne fungi generally declined as the number of years in sod increased, but were not affected by coastal bermudagrass sod. Yields of okra following 2-year and 3-year sod and squash following 2-year sod were greater than those following fallow. Yield of sweet corn was not different following fallow and coastal bermudagrass sod.  相似文献

Background

Dalmatia is an interesting place to study the use of wild greens as it lies at the intersection of influence of Slavs, who do not usually use many species of wild greens, and Mediterranean culinary culture, where the use of multiple wild greens is common. The aim of the study was to document the mixtures of wild green vegetables which are sold in all the vegetable markets of Dalmatia.

Methods

All vendors (68) in all 11 major markets of the Dalmatian coast were interviewed. The piles of wild vegetables they sold were searched and herbarium specimens taken from them.

Results

The mean number of species in the mix was 5.7. The most commonly sold wild plants are: Sonchus oleraceus L., Allium ampeloprasum L., Foeniculum vulgare Mill., Urospermum picroides F.W.Schmidt, Papaver rhoeas L., Daucus carota L., Taraxacum sp., Picris echioides L., Silene latifolia Poir. and Crepis spp. Also the cultivated beet (Beta vulgaris L.) and a few cultivated Brassicaceae varieties are frequent components. Wild vegetables from the mix are usually boiled for 20–30 minutes and dressed with olive oil and salt. Altogether at least 37 wild taxa and 13 cultivated taxa were recorded. Apart from the mixes, Asparagus acutifolius L. and Tamus communis L. shoots are sold in separate bunches (they are usually eaten with eggs), as well as some Asteraceae species, the latter are eaten raw or briefly boiled.

Conclusions

The rich tradition of eating many wild greens may result both from strong Venetian and Greek influences and the necessity of using all food resources available in the barren, infertile land in the past. Although the number of wild-collected green vegetables is impressive we hypothesize that it may have decreased over the years, and that further in-depth local ethnobotanical studies are needed in Dalmatia to record the disappearing knowledge of edible plants.  相似文献

The proliferation of Streptococcus faecalis var. liquefaciens on two varieties of beans, and on corn, rye, and cabbage was investigated. Comparisons were made with growth patterns on these same plants exhibited by S. lactis and Lactobacillus plantarum. The ability of each of the bacteria to multiply and to spread to new plant parts as they developed from seed was studied under several environmental conditions. Plants were grown aseptically in glass culture and in sterilized and non-sterilized soil in the greenhouse. Quantitative estimations of increase in bacterial numbers were made. S. faecalis established commensal growth on each of five plants, although selectivity was noted for some plant parts. The organism increased in numbers on the plants equally as well as did the control bacteria, both alone, and in competition with the control bacteria and the microflora of the soil.  相似文献

The predominant type of bacteria present in the gut of larval Galleria mellonella were streptococci group D identified as Streptococcus faecalis which showed bacteriolytic activity. Young larvae usually contained mixed populations with a marked dominance of fecal streptococci while normally developed mature larvae most frequently contained large uniform populations of S. faecalis. Pupal stages were found to contain the highest percentage of individuals with pure cultures of fecal streptococci.The author suggests a hypothesis that, owing to its bacteriolytic properties, S. faecalis can be considered as a component of the natural, nonspecific defense mechanism of G. mellonella against bacterial infections. The lytic enzyme released in the exponential growth phase of S. faecalis participates in the selection process stabilizing the microbial flora of wax moth larvae; it limits the population of other forms of bacteria. Larval resistance to bacterial infections to a large extent depends on the magnitude of the populations and thus on S. faecalis muramidase concentration. Bacterial lysozyme inhibited the growth of the ingested organisms and in consequence it prevented the proliferation of undesired bacteria in the digestive tract of Galleria larvae.The lytic enzyme proved to be identical with autolysin, a β-N-acetylmuramide glycanhydrolase (EC 3.2.1.17) which has been isolated from trypsin-speeded wall autolysates of S. faecalis by Shockman and Cheney (1969).  相似文献

During this study the frequency of occurrence and dominance of phytophagous and predatory mites harboring seven vegetable crops in Egypt, namely common bean, cowpea, eggplant, okra, squash, sweet pepper and sweet potato during 2017–2018 were investigated to identify predatory mites that might be useful for the biological control of the phytophagous mites. Three phytophagous and nine predatory mite species were surveyed. The two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch of the family Tetranychidae was the dominant pest on these vegetables, while phytoseiids Phytoseiulus persimilis (Athias- Henriot), Typhlodromips swirskii (Athias- Henriot) and Euseius scutalis Chant were the dominant predators. The population of the native or indigenous phytoseiid mite fauna in Egypt such as Phytoseiulus persimilis could be considered as a good biocontrol agent and a part of the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program in the future. Mite fauna of Egypt especially local populations of Phytoseiulus persimilis can be considered for implementation in future Integrated Pest Management (IPM).  相似文献

Summary Seedling emergence in different crops was studied in the soil temperature range of 5°C to 45°C. In peas and turnips seedling emergence stopped at a soil temperature of 35°C and in other crops at 45°C. The minimum temperature for seedling emergence was above 10°C in case of cotton, sorghum, rice, maize and musk melon and above 15°C in case of squash, bottle gourd and okra. Winter crops like wheat, gram, peas, and turnips emerged at 5°C but the percent emergence was low. The optimum range for seedling emergence was narrower for vegetable crops as compared with cereals.  相似文献

Enterococci were obtained from 213 of 403 insects cultured during a 14-month period, in numbers from 103 to 3 × 107/g of insect. Insects were taken only from nonurban, wild, and cultivated fields and woods. In species of insects carrying them, enterococci were not always present in every individual cultured, and often more than one species of enterococcus occurred within a species. Enterococci were obtained from certain insects taken in the field during the dormant season, suggesting their role as overwintering agents. They were generally present in species feeding on nectar, succulent plant parts, and on and ir forest litter, but not from insects feeding on less succulent leaves and stems. Streptococcus faecalis was recovered from 32%, Streptococcus faecium from 22.4%, and Streptococcus faecium var. casseliflavus from 43.5% of members of the 37 taxa of insects. S. faecalis and S. faecium var. casseliflavus exhibit a high percent of conformity to the properties published for them. The heterogeneity in properties of S. faecium is similar to that found for the species taken from plants. Many fail to grow in broth at 45 C or in broth containing 6.5% NaCl; 50% of the cultures ferment both melezitose and melibiose, and a few ferment neither sugar. The remainder ferment melibiose only. Failure to reduce methylene blue in milk by S. faecalis and S. faecium is correlated with the inability to ferment lactose. More than 93% of the cultures of S. faecalis digest casein in milk from the top downward, following the production of a soft, flowing curd. Because this property is not characteristic of S. faecalis taken from humans, the reaction in litmus milk is suggested as a means of differentiation between cultures of remote and innocent origin in nature and recent, human pollution.  相似文献

Enterococci were obtained from 14% of nearly 2,200 flowers, 3.4% of non-floral structures of angiosperms, and from 8.3% of samples of soil, water, and lesser plants of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, an area little influenced by the presence of man. The enterococci were recovered from one or more flowers or flower clusters of 1,515 samples in 47 taxa, but not from flowers of 67 taxa with 654 samples. The per cent of recovery was influenced adversely by dense forest cover and by increase in elevation, as compared with recovery from flowers in sunny locations in the lower elevations. The per cent recovery increased directly with rising seasonal temperature, with the maximal per cent of recovery occurring in September. In no instance did all samples of a species of flower or plant yield enterococci on culture, and with only three genera, Cacalia, Delphinium, and Mitchella, were the bacteria obtained from more than 50% of the samples. Approximately 11% of the cultures isolated were identified as Streptococcus faecalis, 64% as the soft curd producing, caseolytic variant of S. faecalis, 4% as S. faecalis var. zymogenes, and 20% as S. faecium. The per cent distribution of these species on plants was reasonably similar to the distribution within wild animals in the same environment. It was concluded that the enterococci occurring on plants arise commonly from the wild animals, and that they do not represent plant-specific species or variants of the enterococci.  相似文献

The effects of eight summer rotation crops on nematode densities and yields of subsequent spring vegetable crops were determined in field studies conducted in north Florida from 1991 to 1993. The crop sequence was as follows: (i) rotation crops during summer 1991; (ii) cover crop of rye (Secale cereale) during winter 1991-92; (iii) ''Lemondrop L'' squash (Cucurbita pepo) during spring 1992; (iv) rotation crops during summer 1992; (v) rye during winter 1992-93; (vi) ''Classic'' eggplant (Solanum melongena) during spring 1993. The eight summer crop rotation treatments were as follows: ''Hale'' castor (Ricinus communis), velvetbean (Mucuna deeringiana), sesame (Sesamum indicum), American jointvetch (Aeschynomene americana), weed fallow, ''SX- 17'' sorghum-sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor x S. sudanense), ''Kirby'' soybean (Glycine max), and ''Clemson Spineless'' okra (Hibiscus esculentus) as a control. Rotations with castor, velvetbean, American jointvetch, and sorghum-sudangrass were most effective in maintaining the lowest population densities of Meloidogyne spp. (a mixture of M. incognita race 1 and M. arenaria race 1), but Paratrichodorus minor built up in the sorghum-sudangrass rotation. Yield of squash was lower (P ≤ 0.05) following sorghum-sudangrass than after any of the other treatments except fallow. Yield of eggplant was greater (P ≤ 0.05) following castor, sesame, or American jointvetch than following okra or fallow. Several of the rotation crops evaluated here may be useful for managing nematodes in the field and for improving yields of subsequent vegetable crops.  相似文献

The proportion of labeled 14C-glycerol incorporated into phospholipids and the fatty acid composition of three phospholipids in germinating seeds and seedlings of chilling-sensitive lima beans (Phaseolus lunatus L.) and chilling-resistant broad beans (Vicia faba L.) and peas (Pisum sativum L.) at 10 and 25 C were determined. During the imbibition of seeds (first 24 hours), lima beans were sensitive to chilling injury at 10 C and a higher proportion of label was incorporated into phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol than in broad beans and peas. Broad beans and peas incorporated a higher proportion of label into phosphatidylcholine. The oleic acid content of phosphatidylcholine was higher and linolenic acid content was lower in peas and broad beans than in lima beans at 10 and 25 C. The unsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratio was much higher for the chilling-resistant seeds than for the chilling-sensitive ones. In the seedling stage, the proportion of label incorporated into the four major phospholipids was similar in the three species regardless of temperature treatment. The fatty acid content of the phospholipids examined was not different in the three species in the seedling stage.  相似文献

The use of botanical insecticides based on the neem seed (Azadirachta indica var.siamensis Valeton) shows strong potential in the fight against important agricultural pests. Unfortunately, its use in rural Thailand is extremely limited. This study examines the efficacy of neem extracts processed under rural conditions; identifies factors that influence local farmers’ adoption of neem products; and proposes recommendations to promote the use of neem insecticides. The principal findings are: in field trials conducted under typical rural conditions, neem did not adequately control major pests of yard-long beans (Vigna sesquipedalis); and intensity of vegetable production, knowledge of neem insecticides and availability and accessibility of neem products strongly influence farmers’ adoption of neem products for pest control.  相似文献

Procedures to quantitate accurately the in vitro phagocytosis of sheep erythrocytes and Aerococcus viridans var. homari (formerly Gaffkya homari) bacteria by hemocytes of the American lobster were utilized to assess the effect of various vaccines on the humoral and cellular defense mechanisms of the lobster. Both the percent of hemocytes showing phagocytosis and the number of particles phagocytosed increased markedly in many of the animals injected with Pseudomonas perolens cells or endotoxin. A lesser response was elicited by A. viridans cellular vaccines. In vivo phagocytosis was observed in the circulatory system of lobsters infected with A. viridans var. homari.Natural hemolymph agglutinins for sheep or rabbit erythrocytes were not affectd by any vaccines. Hemocyte numbers dropped initially after administration of P. perolens endotoxin or cells. The bactericidin level was enhanced in samples taken from vaccinated animals.  相似文献

To understand the significance to the host of streptococci as part of the intestinal microflora, we first tried to investigate the distribution of human fecal streptococci on the species level. Of the selective media compared, KMN agar was more effective than the other media for the isolation of streptococci from human feces. We made an effort to improve streptococcal classification. Especially we used utilization of 1% pyruvate, 1% arginine, and 1% citrate for differentiation between Streptococcus faecalis and S. faecium. In a tellurite tolerance test, S. faecalis was distinguished more clearly from S. faecium in the medium containing 0.16 or 0.32% tellurite. We devised methods of presumptive identification of fecal streptococci from the results of the characteristics of 1,442 isolates. These methods enabled us to identify many strains rapidly. Different results in the distribution of species of streptococci between children and adults were observed. S. faecalis and S. faecium were isolated constantly from both groups. S. bovis and S. avium were isolated frequently from the feces of children. On the other hand, “viridans” streptococci, e.g. S. salivarius, S. mitis and S. MG-intermedius were present at a high frequency in, and no S. avium could be isolated from, the feces of adults.  相似文献

Summary The relative toxicity of nitrapyrin 2-chloro-6-(trichloromethyl) pyridine and ATC (4-amino-1, 2, 4-triazole) on the growth of chick peas (Cicer arietinum L.) cow peas (Vigna sinensis L.), green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), green peas (Pisum sativum L.) and mung beans (Phaseolus aureus Roxb.) and their effectiveness as nitrification inhibitor were studied under greenhouse conditions. ATC produced no toxicity symptoms in green peas, whereas resulted in leaf chlorosis in cow peas, chick peas and green beans. However, nitrapyrin toxicity appeared as leaf chlorosis in cow peas, and interveinal chlorosis in chick peas. Moreover, nitrapyrin-treated green beans and peas developed leaf curling and cupping. Although ATC had no significant effect on growth, a suppression in plant growth was associated with nitrapyrin application. Furthermore, green beans was the most resistant and chick peas the most sensitive to nitrapyrin. Nitrapyrin was more effective nitrification inhibitor than ACT, especially at the lower rates.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to explore if microwave irradiation and moist autoclaving treatments could change nutritive values, nutrients availability and protein inherent spectral structural characteristics in tannin (var. Fatima) and non-tannin (var. Snowbird) faba beans. An in situ approach with four cannulated dry Holstein dairy cows was applied in this study. The results showed that beans heated with microwave and autoclaving had increased contents of ether extract and neutral detergent insoluble CP and reduced soluble CP, sugar and tannin concentrations when compared with the raw seeds. Heating reduced degradable nutrients in the rumen and increased intestinally absorbable nutrients, but it failed to improve digestibility in total tract. All the results showed heating with moisture and pressure would be stronger and severer than microwave irradiation. The variety of faba bean interacted with thermal treatment on total truly intestinally absorbed protein value which showed to be highest in the microwaved brown faba bean and lowest in the unheated Snowbird bean. The degraded protein balance (OEB) value was significantly decreased after both kinds of heating process, suggesting that heating treatments could mitigate loss of nitrogen from the rumen to a large extent. We further collected spectral data using mid-IR spectroscopy and found heat processed beans had varied peak height and area ratios compared with raw beans. However, multivariate results implied that heating process failed to completely change the whole molecular conformation in the protein amide region. Correlations were found between ADF/ADL and spectral features, and the OEB value was negatively related to protein secondary structural α-helix. In conclusion, both faba beans were more sensitive to autoclaving treatment than microwave irradiation in terms of nutrient availability in ruminants.  相似文献

Aims

The effects of partial replacement of a barley‐based concentrate with flaxseed‐based products on the rumen bacterial population of lactating Holstein dairy cows were evaluated.

Methods and Results

Treatments fed were CONT, a normal diet that included barley silage, alfalfa hay and a barley‐based concentrate that contained no flaxseed or faba beans; FLAX, inclusion of a nonextruded flaxseed‐based product containing 55·0% flaxseed, 37·8% field peas and 6·9% alfalfa; EXT, similar to FLAX, but the product was extruded and EXTT, similar to FLAX, but product was extruded and field peas were replaced by high‐tannin faba beans. The rumen bacterial population was evaluated by utilizing 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Most abundant phyla, families and genera were unaffected. However, some taxa were affected; for example, unsaturated fatty acid content was negatively correlated with Clostridiaceae, and tannin content was negatively correlated with BS11 and Paraprevotellaceae.

Conclusions

Predominant rumen bacterial taxa were not affected, but the abundance of some taxa found in lower proportions shifted, possibly due to sensitivity to unsaturated fatty acids or tannins.

Significance and Impact of the Study

Flaxseed‐based products were effective for partially replacing barley‐based concentrate in rations of lactating dairy cows. No negative effects of these products were observed on the abundance of predominant rumen bacterial taxa, with only minor shifts in less abundant bacteria.  相似文献

The incidence of naturally occuring bacterial infection in a Connecticut population of rock crab, Cancer irroratus, varied between 10 and 60% of the population. The fluctuation in incidence was correlated significantly with hemocyte concentrations. Twelve percent of the crabs sampled during Jenuary were found to be infected with a previously undescribed Vibrio. The Vibrio was demonstrated as pathogenic over a wide range of temperatures. High mortalities in experimentally infected crabs appear to result from hemocyte clumping and extensive intravascular clotting triggered by an endotoxin. The lobster pathogen, Aerococcus viridans var. homari, was found to be pathogenic at 25°C to C. irroratus, a prey species of the lobster. Results suggest that this species can act as a reservior host for A. viridans var. homari.  相似文献

A revision of the Syntrichia ruralis complex in Belgium was undertaken. Four taxa: S ruralis, S. ruralis var. arenicola, S. intermedia and S. intermedia var. calva, are recognized. Syntrichia princeps is also accepted, though tentatively, due to its synoecious condition. Syntrichia densa, S. calcicola and S. ruralis s.str. form a series of intergrades and the first two are considered as extreme morphological expressions of the latter. The morphological variability of these taxa, their ecology and distribution in Belgium are studied and a key is provided.  相似文献
