Sexual specialization and skewed sex ratios of the altruistic castes, especially soldiers, are common in many termite taxa. However, no theoretical or empirical studies have explained the origin of the sexual division of labor in termites. In most termite species, female alates are larger than male alates, and mature queens are much larger than kings, with females under consistent selection for high fertility. Therefore, females usually have the potential to be larger than males. Here, I present a novel preadaptation hypothesis that potential sexual differences in the suitability for the caste give rise to the sexual division of labor, and I provide the first evidence in support of this hypothesis in termites. Defense in Reticulitermes is typically performed by soldiers via mandibular and phragmotic defense in which soldiers with pluglike heads block openings, thus preventing enemies from invading the nest. Phragmotic defense requires that soldiers have heads wide enough to plug nest openings. Therefore, a size threshold for workers that develop into soldiers is a likely adaptation for effective defense. I show that sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and a size threshold for soldiers promote skewed sex ratios. A female-biased soldier sex ratio was observed in species with SSD, whereas there was no bias in soldier sex ratio in species without SSD. Thus, SSD and soldier sex ratio data from several Reticulitermes species support the preadaptation hypothesis.  相似文献

Genetic hemochromatosis (GH) is a late-onset, autosomal recessive disorder. The majority of those at risk from iron overload and its clinical consequences may be detected by a simple genetic test. Furthermore, treatment by phlebotomy, if instituted early, removes excess iron and prevents the complications of iron overload which include arthralgia, diabetes, and cirrhosis of the liver. GH seems to be an obvious candidate for inclusion in national screening programs. However, important questions remain concerning the proportion of individuals with the high-risk genotype who eventually show clinical manifestations of iron overload and the significance of heterozygosity for haemochromatosis in terms of morbidity. Until these questions are resolved, the introduction of widespread genetic screening cannot be justified.  相似文献

Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) show one of the highestlevels of extrapair paternity in birds, and there is evidencethat females have control over who fathers their offspring.However, it is unclear which benefits female tree swallows obtainfrom mating with multiple males. Using microsatellite DNA fingerprinting,we studied extrapair paternity in relation to nesting successand male, female, and offspring characteristics. More than 70%of all nests contained extrapair young, and more than half ofall offspring were extrapair. Within broods, the extrapair youngwere often fathered by several males. Despite screening allresident and some floater males, we could identify the biologicalfather of only 21% of all extrapair offspring. All identifiedextrapair males were close neighbors. Extrapair males did notdiffer from within-pair males in any of the measured characteristics,except that the former had larger cloacal protuberances than thelatter. Extrapair males were equally successful in gaining paternityin their own broods as males that did not father extra young.In nests with mixed paternity, extrapair young did not differfrom within-pair young in body size or mass. However, nestswith extrapair young had higher hatching success than nestswithout extrapair young. All examined unhatched eggs were fertilizedand thus hatch failure resulted from embryo mortality. The availabledata are in accordance with the genetic diversity and the geneticcompatibility hypothesis, but not with the good genes hypothesis.  相似文献

Spatial proximity between different plant species could modify the sign (positive or negative) of plant–herbivore interaction. The chance of a plant being detected and colonized by herbivorous insects depends not only on the plant's own traits but also on the identity of the neighbouring plants that grow with it. The closest proximity between plants occurs in climbers and their host. We conducted a field experiment to assess the effect of spatial association between a climber plant, Vicia nigricans (Fabaceae), and two host shrubs, Berberis buxifolia (Berberidaceae) and Schinus patagonica (Anacardiaceae), on insect herbivory levels, reproductive output and growth. The presence and identity of the host shrubs affected the herbivory levels of the climber V. nigricans, but not the reproductive output. For the climber, the probability of being attacked by insects could depend on the characteristics of the host shrub. Taking the opposite perspective, climber association affected different traits of the host shrubs. The association with the climber decreased leaf damage (positive), tended to decrease leaf production (negative) and did not affect reproductive output (neutral). Our findings suggest that spatial association between plant species could change the sign of the interactions between plants and insects affecting different traits. By taking into account the perspective of both plants involved in the association, this study shows and emphasizes that plant–animal interactions strongly depend on the community context.  相似文献

Abstract Estimates of species richness for a given area require that repeat surveys be taken, so that the statistical robustness of the estimate can be assessed. But how should these repeat surveys be organized in time? Here we present a case study of Australian woodland birds, surveyed using the ‘active timed area search’ method, which has become the standard unit for the Australian Bird Atlas, a continental‐scale bird survey. To date, there has been no assessment of how estimates of species richness derived from this method are affected by the temporal organization of the repeat surveys. For instance, can conducting the repeat surveys in sequence on the same day effectively capture richness, or will additional species be obtained by repeating the surveys on different days within a season? If so, does the spacing of the repeat visits throughout the season have an effect? To answer these questions, we surveyed woodland birds in the Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia, during late spring–summer 1999–2000, and compared the performance of two different temporal configurations of repeat visits to sites: (i) six repeat surveys performed on the same day; and (ii) three repeat surveys on different days. For both, we calculated the average number of species actually sighted and also estimated total species richness. The data supported our hypothesis that the same‐day surveys would yield fewer species and underestimate total species richness. The different‐day repeats captured significantly more species per unit of survey effort, and yielded a higher richness estimate. However, the timespan over which different‐day surveys were conducted within a season did not have a significant influence on species richness estimates, evincing a qualitative advantage to surveying on different days, regardless of the spacing of repeat visits. These results may be of assistance to conservation managers when planning cost‐efficient monitoring regimes.  相似文献

A positive relationship between species richness and productivity is often observed in nature, but the causes remain contentious. One mechanism, the ‘more individuals hypothesis’ (MIH), predicts richness increases monotonically with density, as a function of resource flux. To test the MIH, we manipulated resource abundance in a community of tropical rainforest litter ants and measured richness and density responses. A unimodal relationship between richness and density most closely fitted the control and disturbance (resource removal) treatments in contrast to expectations of the MIH. Resource addition resulted in a monotonic increase in richness relative to density, a shift from the pattern in the control. In the disturbance treatment, richness was greater than in the control, opposite to expectations of the MIH. While large-scale correlations between ant diversity and net primary productivity or temperature are reconcilable with the MIH, key elements of the hypothesis are not supported.  相似文献

A common ecological restoration approach is the reestablishment of vegetation using seed mixtures. To preserve the natural genetic pattern of plant species local seed material should be used. Consequently, seed transfer zones (seed production areas and seed provenance regions) have been delineated for ecological restoration in Germany. Although it is assumed that these transfer zones represent genetic variation, there remains a lack of empirical data. In this study, we analyzed whether seed transfer zones reflect the genetic variation of the common grassland species Lathyrus pratensis. We sampled 706 individuals from 37 populations in Bavaria, Germany and analyzed genetic variation using amplified fragment length polymorphisms. In our study, we observed higher levels of genetic variation and fragment rarity in the southern Bavarian populations compared to northern populations. Our analyses revealed a strong genetic differentiation between southern and northern Bavarian populations delineated along the Danube River. However, seed production areas and seed provenance regions reflected genetic variation of L. pratensis only to a limited degree. Our study illustrates that the level of genetic variation within populations strongly depends on population history. Furthermore, the geomorphological and climatic attributes, which have been used to delineate seed provenance regions, do not reduce gene flow among populations. Seed collections for gene banks and seed production should comprise seeds from populations in southern and northern Bavaria representing the strong genetic variation between both regions, but prioritize southern populations due to higher levels of variation.  相似文献

Tropical dry forests are biologically important biomes sustaining a high rate of endemic species. However, these forests are highly threatened by human activities that negatively impact them on distinct levels, including the genetic diversity. Within the framework of landscape genetics (that seeks to evaluate the relation of characteristics of the environmental matrix with population genetics), we used ISSR markers to evaluate the relationship between the alteration of tropical dry forest by human-induced activities (conserved vs. disturbed) with the genetic structure of four breeding sites of the southern pygmy mouse Baiomys musculus. Averaging among the 105 loci used, the unbiased heterozygosis per population (0.247–0.305) was statistically similar among the four sites, as well as between conserved and disturbed conditions (2-way ANOVA F (3,16)?=?1.47, P?=?0.1984). The genetic differentiation among the four breeding sites was high (F ST?=?0.1122; 95?% CI 0.082–0.146) considering the geographical scale evaluated (ca. 4?km). Both, a factorial correspondence analysis and a model-based clustering analysis showed the existence of four genetic groups (one per breeding site). However, no association of genetic structure with disturbance conditions was revealed by these analyses. The absence of differences in mean genetic diversity and the lack of association of genetic structure with habitat transformation suggest that B. musculus has enough behavioral plasticity and enough genetic diversity to respond to environmental heterogeneity caused by human activities. We discussed conditions in which habitat transformation could indeed favor B. musculus.  相似文献

Spatial patterns of adult plants are a consequence of several ecological processes related to seed dispersal and recruitment. Dispersal limitation, mediated by dispersal syndrome, is considered a key factor in the formation of adult plant spatial patterns. Although this initial pattern determined by dispersal has been thoroughly studied, the subsequently modification by the effect of additional ecological factors, such as habitat heterogeneity is less understood. We explored the relative importance of dispersal syndrome and spatial heterogeneity on the realization of spatial patterns of adult trees in an Ecuadorian tropical dry forest. The spatial distribution of 28 species was modeled with four different spatial point processes each: homogeneous Poisson (HPP), inhomogeneous Poisson (IPP), homogeneous Poisson cluster (HPCP), and inhomogeneous Poisson cluster process (IPCP). These models allowed us to discern between effects of random processes, habitat heterogeneity, limited dispersal, and joint effects of habitat heterogeneity and limited dispersal. We employed Akaike's information criterion (AIC) to select the model which best fit the spatial pattern of each species. The best model of each species was used to analyze differences in cluster size and degree of aggregation, between dispersal syndromes. Seventy‐five percent of the species showed inhomogeneous patterns. IPCP yielded the best fit for the spatial distribution of 50% of species in the studied forest and was the prevalent model for the three dispersal syndromes. Thus, the effect of spatial heterogeneity was prevalent in the distribution of most species in this dry tropical forest. Only 21% of species had spatial patterns compatible with random mechanisms associated to limited dispersal around parent sources. Clearly, ignoring habitat heterogeneity could bias the analysis of relationships between dispersal syndrome and species patterns.  相似文献

We consider the optimal strategy for intra-specific brood-parasitism, especially with respect to the number of eggs laid by the parasitic individual in the nest of non-parasitic individual, in particular, a host that does not reject the parasite's eggs. With a fundamental mathematical model, assuming that the survival probability of the parasite's offspring in the nest of the host is significantly smaller than that in parasite's own nest, we determine the optimal number of eggs laid in the nest of host that maximizes the expected reproductive fitness of the parasite. We show that the invasion success of brood-parasitism could significantly depend on the total number of eggs laid by the parasite in a breeding season, and that the successfully invading brood-parasitism could realize maximum fitness with a specific number of parasite's eggs laid in the nest of the host.  相似文献

After Sudre published his treatment of European Rubi in the early 20th century, Rubus taxonomy in Europe suffered from a scholastic phase and a longer period of stagnation. The so‐called ‘Weberian Reform’ initiated the necessary revival of European batology. It rests on four major pillars: 1) mapping projects over larger areas, 2) evaluation of type material, 3) visits to loci classici, and 4) evaluation of the status of species by means of their distribution areas. Subsequently, it has become widely accepted in European batology that only species with a distribution area over 50 km should be described. Although this pragmatic species concept has been useful in making a continent‐wide overview of brambles, we argue that it is lacking a scientific basis, and should thus be rejected. There are at least four distinctive problems when treating locally distributed brambles: 1) primary hybrids, 2) locally distributed stabilised apomicts, 3) intraspecific variation in species with a larger distribution range, and 4) unstabilised swarms of hybridogenic biotypes and the derivates thereof (mainly in the montane regions). When facing the problems in Rubus systematics, we argue that all independently evolving lineages should be described as species, including apomictic lineages with very small distribution ranges, both from the mountain‐dwelling glandular series and from the lowlands. Neither primary hybrids (which are not stabilised by apomixis), nor biotypes without an independent and coherent distribution area are independently evolving lineages, and should thus not be described as species. We advocate a restrained attitude when describing new species with limited distribution areas.  相似文献

Background

Overweight older adults are often counseled to lose weight, even though there is little evidence of excess mortality in that age group. Overweight and underweight may be more associated with health status than with mortality, but few clinical trials of any kind have been based on maximizing years of healthy life (YHL), as opposed to years of life (YOL).

Objective

This paper examines the relationship of body mass index (BMI) to both YHL and YOL. Results were used to determine whether clinical trials of weight-modification based on improving YHL would be more powerful than studies based on survival.

Design

We used data from a cohort of 4,878 non-smoking men and women aged 65–100 at baseline (mean age 73) and followed 7 years. We estimated mean YHL and YOL in four categories of BMI: underweight, normal, overweight, and obese.

Results

Subjects averaged 6.3 YOL and 4.6 YHL of a possible 7 years. Both measures were higher for women and whites. For men, none of the BMI groups was significantly different from the normal group on either YOL or YHL. For women, the obese had significantly lower YHL (but not YOL) than the normals, and the underweight had significantly lower YOL and YHL. The overweight group was not significantly different from the normal group on either measure.

Conclusions

Clinical trials of weight loss interventions for obese older women would require fewer participants if YHL rather than YOL was the outcome measure. Interventions for obese men or for the merely overweight are not likely to achieve differences in either YOL or YHL. Evaluations of interventions for the underweight (which would presumably address the causes of their low weight) may be conducted efficiently using either outcome measure.

The uteri of 26 clinically healthy bitches and 42 bitches with a clinical suspicion of pyometra were examined histologically using a computerized image analysis system. Histologic lesions were characterised mainly by thickening or atrophy of the endometrium and by varying degrees of cystic changes of the glands. These lesions were observed in most of the clinically healthy bitches as well as in all of the clinically ill animals. In most of the ill bitches a variable degree of inflammation also was found. Some bitches with clinical signs indicative for pyometra had no inflammatory reaction in the uterus. These bitches were misdiagnosed as suffering from pyometra, confirming the difficulty of diagnosing pyometra by simple clinical examination. Determination of sex hormone serum levels revealed that all dogs in both groups were either in metestrus or in anestrus. Based on the results of this study the cystic endometrial hyperplasia-pyometra complex can be divided in two entities: a cystic endometrial hyperplasia-mucometra complex and an endometritis-pyometra complex. Both entities bear many similarities with each other, except for the inflammatory reaction in the endometritis-pyometra complex. It is concluded from this study that the latter complex probably does not necessarily follow the former, but that both can arise de novo.  相似文献

Gene flow at a fine scale is still poorly understood despite its recognized importance for plant population demographic and genetic processes.We tested the hypothesis that intensity of gene flow will be lower and strength of spatial genetic structure(SGS) will be higher in more peripheral populations because of lower population density.The study was performed on the predominantly selfing Avena sterilis and included:(1) direct measurement of dispersal in a controlled environment;and(2) analyses of SGS in three natural populations,sampled in linear transects at fixed increasing inter-plant distances.We found that in A.sterilis major seed dispersal is by gravity in close(less than 2 m) vicinity of the mother plant,with a minor additional effect of wind.Analysis of SGS with six nuclear SSRs revealed a significant autocorrelation for the distance class of 1 m only in the most peripheral desert population,while in the two core populations with Mediterranean conditions,no genetic structure was found.Our results support the hypothesis that intensity of SGS increases from the species core to periphery as a result of decreased within-population gene flow related to low plant density.Our findings also show that predominant self-pollination and highly localized seed dispersal lead to SGS at a very fine scale,but only if plant density is not too high.  相似文献
