The energy cost of offspring is important in the conversion of resources allocated to reproduction to numbers of offspring, and in obtaining energy budget parameters from quantities that are easy to measure. An efficient numerical procedure is presented to obtain this cost for eggs and foetusses in the context of the dynamic energy budget theory, which specifies that birth occurs when maturity exceeds a threshold value and maternal effects determine the reserve density at birth. This paper extends previous work to arbitrary values of the ratio of the maturity and somatic maintenance costs. I discuss the body size scaling implications for the relative size and age at birth and conclude that the size at birth, contrary to the age at birth, covaries with the maintenance ratio. Apart from evolutionary adaptation of the maturity at birth, this covariation might explain some of the observed scatter in the relative length at birth. The theory can be used to evaluate the effects of the separation of cells in e.g. the two-cell stage of embryonic development, and of the removal of initial egg mass. If cell separation hardly affects energy parameters, body size scaling relationships imply that cell separation can only occur successfully in species with sufficiently large maximum body length (as adult); i.e. some two times that of Daphnia magna. Toxic compounds that increase the cost of synthesis of structure, decrease the allocation to reproduction indirectly via the life cycle, because food uptake is linked to size. They can also decrease the egg size, however, such that the reproduction rate is stimulated at low concentrations. The present theory offers a possible explanation for this well-known phenomenon.   相似文献

The relatedness of individuals can have pronounced effects on behavioural interactions, as engaging in mutually beneficial behaviours with kin can increase inclusive fitness. Parental care can be particularly important for kin discrimination in birds and mammals, but similar studies have not been conducted on species exhibiting more rudimentary forms of care. Maternal attendance of young is ubiquitous among viviparous temperate pitvipers, but the adaptive value of this behaviour has received little attention. We sought to determine if being deprived of a maternal attendance period as neonates altered how cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus Lacépède), a common North American pitviper, responded to kin vs. non‐kin. We measured the affiliative behaviour of related and unrelated juvenile–juvenile and mother–juvenile pairs that had been allowed a maternal attendance period or had been separated since birth. We found that maternal attendance was not required for sibling or mother–offspring recognition, but did enhance female affiliative behaviour overall, and particularly that of sisters. In contrast, related juveniles that were separated at birth showed a reversal of the sex‐specific affiliative behaviour observed in maternally attended juveniles. Post‐birth separation had only a modest effect on mother–juvenile affiliative behaviour, and no effect on the strong affiliation between mothers and daughters. The patterns of affiliative behaviour observed in maternally attended snakes corresponded to patterns that have emerged from previous captive and field studies of pitvipers; however, the behaviour of juveniles separated at birth was atypical. Thus, it is possible that maternal attendance plays some role in the development of adaptive sex‐specific and kin‐directed affiliative behaviour in pitvipers.  相似文献

短尾秀体溞(Diaphanosoma brachyurum)是东湖6—9月的优势种群。作者在实验室恒温条件下,观察了它的发育与生长。这种溢的卵与胚胎发育时间随温度升高而缩短。卵与胚胎发育时间(D)与温度(T)间的迥归方程为: logD=2.0195-1.3784logT 短尾秀体溞的生长速度随龄数而变化,一般可分为3个时期:幼龄为高速生长期,成龄前期为中速生长期,后期则为缓慢生长期。在25℃时有4个幼龄,10个成龄;而在30、35℃时有3个幼龄,12或11个成龄。幼龄的脱皮频率远大于成龄。每个成龄期的平均龄期约为幼龄期的2倍以上,而同卵与胚胎发育的时间基本相等。龄期、寿命与温度呈反比。在25,30,35℃温度下,累计产卵数分别为65.63,69.09,51.77个。产卵率以25℃为最高(1.3421),30℃为其次(1.2856),35℃为最低(1.1488)。    相似文献

The influence of temperature on biochemical composition, survival and duration of development of Cherax quadricarinatus from egg extrusion to juvenile was analyzed. Berried females were individually subjected to each of 22, 25, 28 and 31 degrees C (n=5 per temperature). Egg samples were obtained every 3 days from egg extrusion to juvenile stage for biochemical analysis. Duration of development and survival decreased with increasing temperature. At 22 and 25 degrees C half of the initial lipid content was consumed during development. At 28 and 31 degrees C, 80% of the initial amount of lipids was consumed. For proteins, depletion rate was significantly lower at 25 degrees C (36% of the initial amount) than at 22, 28 and 31 degrees C (61-65% of the initial amount). For carbohydrates, a significant consumption was observed only at 22 degrees C. Total energy consumption was lower at 22 and 25 degrees C than at 28 and 31 degrees C. We conclude that 22-25 degrees C is the optimal temperature range for C. quadricarinatus egg incubation, although 25 degrees C might be better in terms of development duration in terms of survival, energy cost and protein consumption.  相似文献

Steller sea lions are highly maneuverable marine mammals (expressed as minimum turning radius). Video recordings of turns ( n = 195) are analyzed from kinematic measurements for three captive animals. Speed-time plots of 180° turns have a typical "V-shape." The sea lions decelerated during the first half of the turn, reached a minimum speed in the middle of the curved trajectory and reaccelerated by adduction of the pectoral flippers. The initial deceleration was greater than that for passive gliding due to pectoral flipper braking and/or change in body contour from a stiff, straight streamlined form. Centripetal force and thrust were determined from the body acceleration. Most thrust was produced during the power phase of the pectoral flipper stroke cycle. Contrary to previous findings on otariids, little or no thrust was generated during initial abduction of the pectoral flippers and during the final drag-based paddling phase of the stroke cycle. Peak thrust force at the center of gravity occurs halfway through the power phase and the centripetal force is maximal at the beginning of the power stroke. Performance is modulated by changes in the duration and intensity of movements without changing their sequence. Turning radius, maximum velocity, maximum acceleration and turning duration were 0.3 body lengths, 3.5 m/s, 5 m/s2, and 1.6 s, respectively. The relative maneuverability based on velocity and length specific minimum turning radius is comparable to other otariids, superior to cetaceans but inferior to many fish.  相似文献

Most of the extensive literature concerning the resynchronization of circadian rhythms after a Zeitgeber shift is devoted to the dependence of resynchronization on the mode of the shift and the strength of the Zeitgeber, as well as on the circadian function investigated. Ontogenetic influences have rarely been investigated. Therefore, we studied the resynchronization of several circadian rhythms in juvenile and adult female laboratory mice. We present here the results concerning the corticosterone rhythm. The daily rhythms were determined as transverse profiles (2-h intervals) before as well as 3, 7, and 14 days after an 8-h phase delay of the light/dark cycle produced by a single prolongation of dark time. The corticosterone concentration in serum was determined radioimmunologically. In the control animals the daily patterns were bimodal, with main maxima at the end of the light time and secondary ones just after lights on. Ontogenetic differences were small. In adult mice the amplitude was slightly increased due to an increase in the maximum values, and the time of highest hormone concentrations was slightly phase advanced. In juvenile mice, a distinct daily pattern with a phase position in relation to the light/dark cycle corresponding to that of control animals was present on the 3rd day after the Zeitgeber shift. The daily mean as well as the minimum and maximum values increased initially and reached the values of control animals during the second week. In adult animals, a pronounced daily rhythm with the normal phase position was present only at the 7th postshift day. The amplitude, daily mean, and maximum values were decreased, and the minimum values were increased. The initial values were not reached even after 2 weeks. The results show that resynchronization was faster in juvenile mice compared with adult mice. As a possible cause for the observed age-related differences, a not yet stabilized phase-coupling between various circadian rhythms is supposed.  相似文献

1.  Human sex ratio at birth at the population level has been suggested to vary according to exogenous stressors such as wars, ambient temperature, ecological disasters and economic crises, but their relative effects on birth sex ratio have not been investigated. It also remains unclear whether such associations represent environmental forcing or adaptive parental response, as parents may produce the sex that has better survival prospects and fitness in a given environmental challenge.
2.  We examined the simultaneous role of wars, famine, ambient temperature, economic development and total mortality rate on the annual variation of offspring birth sex ratio and whether this variation, in turn, was related to sex-specific infant mortality rate in Finland during 1865–2003.
3.  Our findings show an increased excess of male births during the World War II and during warm years. Instead, economic development, famine, short-lasting Finnish civil war and total mortality rate were not related to birth sex ratio. Moreover, we found no association between annual birth sex ratio and sex-biased infant mortality rate among the concurrent cohort.
4.  Our results propose that some exogenous challenges like ambient temperature and war can skew human birth sex ratio and that these deviations likely represent environmental forcing rather than adaptive parental response to such challenges.  相似文献

Sex ratio of 17,273 blood donors born during the period between 1925 and 1935 was examined according to their month of birth and ABO blood groups in comparison with 5,810 healthy non-blood donors born in the 1900s to 1930s. The sex ratio of the blood donors and the non-blood donors varied similarly according to their month of birth with a prominent peak in summer births and a trough in winter births. This birth season with a high sex ratio was different from that of the general births during the period between 1921 and 1935, in which a maximum sex ratio was found in November. A possible explanation for the difference is the different rate of male and female infant deaths according to birth month. Variation of the sex ratio according to season of birth was not similar among the four ABO blood groups. Sex ratio of the donors with blood group B showed no elevation among the summer births. Non-blood donors with blood group B, on the contrary, showed a higher sex ratio than the others in the summer births. This difference can not be explained by infant or juvenile deaths. A possibility is that a tendency to become a blood donor is modified by the season of one's birth differently according to gender and ABO blood groups.  相似文献

F1 hybrid pups from crosses between the strains 129SvEv/Crl and C57BL/6/Crl were subjected to an analysis of the development of adult swimming pattern (from the day of birth until 21 days old) to study the potential gender difference in neuromuscular development of neonatal and juvenile mice and the cognitive component in the development of swimming skills. Swimming as a parameter of scrutiny was chosen because it requires total coordination of the body's muscles, and we have previously demonstrated that the gradual change from a neonatal to an adult swimming pattern follows a fixed pattern, that can be scored objectively. Five different parameters were scored: the position of the head in the water, the use of front legs, the use of hind legs, the use of the tail as a rudder and whether or not the animals are able to maintain a straight course in the water. Each parameter could be objectively scored as 0 (neonatal), 1 (juvenile) or 2 (adult) level of development. There was no significant difference between development of locomotor skills in female and male pups. The maximum score obtained at any given day of development was not altered by learning from the previous daily swimming experiences. However, in individual swimming sessions, the time span between exposure to the water and display of maximum swimming score for the age was significantly shortened by daily exposure to water and swimming, indicating habituation to submersion in water. Startle reactions to water exposure could be minimized and finally eliminated by daily swimming sessions. This suggests a cognitive component limited, however, by the physical maturation of the nervous system and muscles, thus not resulting in acceleration of the development of swimming skills.  相似文献

The birth rate of natural cladoceran populations can change rapidly (during 2–3 days), reflecting rapid changes in their environment. If the egg ratio is calculated on the basis of egg age distribution, the birth rate can be estimated at short sampling intervals (shorter than egg stage duration) by modified Paloheimo's (1974) formula. When female size structure and age of eggs in clutches at the beginning and the end of a sampling interval are known, death rates of ovigerous females and eggs in separate size classes can be determined and incorporated in birth rate estimates. All these methods have been employed using the data on the population of Diaphanosoma brahyurum from the lake Obsterno (North-Western Belarus) in July–August, 1992. The birth rate values computed by the proposed methods and Poloheimo's formula differed significantly in many cases. The accuracy of birth rate estimations from various calculation methods was tested using a computer simulation. The model contains the essential features of cladoceran life history: distinct egg, juvenile and adult stages, development of eggs and reproduction. The population was divided into 25 age classes, each of 1 day duration. Durations of the egg, juvenile and adult stages were set at 3, 6 and 20 days, respectively. The embryogenesis was divided into three egg stages, each of 1 day duration. Survivorship was set from 0.2 up to 1.0 for each age class. The survivorship and brood size were changed through each of five time intervals (days) that allowed to simulate an increase or reduction of population density. Fecundity, survivorship and egg stage duration remained constant during each of 5 days that assumed stability of an environment (this does not occur in nature). Nevertheless, the egg ratio, proportion of juveniles and birth rates were variable even under these circumstances. Computer simulations showed that Poloheimo's formula evaluates birth rate with the relative error of 62% and usually overestimates its values. We propose methods to decrease errors of birth rate estimations by 3.5–5.5 times.  相似文献

The effects of a non-extractive marine reserve on the recruitment dynamics of haemulid fishes and their predators on Barbados coral reefs were studied using visual census and mark-recapture methods. Size and abundance of piscivores (including large adult grunts) known to prey on grunts were greater within the reserve than on adjacent reefs, whereas size and abundance of older juvenile grunts did not differ between protected and exploited reefs. Recruitment and early juvenile abundance were lower within the reserve and were inversely related to predator density (including adult conspecifics). Patterns in density of new recruits may also have been influenced by oceanographic patterns of supply of larvae. Thus, although protection has a significant positive effect on the size and abundance of large carnivorous fishes, higher predation pressure within a reserve may serve to reduce juvenile recruitment within the reserve. At some size/age, cumulative recruitment due to lower size-specific predation mortality results in higher density within the reserve. This increased density is maintained by the absence of fishing mortality within the reserve. Despite maintaining high spawning biomass of several large, commercially exploited species that may export larvae to downstream areas, the Barbados Marine Reserve appears to be a local sink for juvenile grunts.  相似文献

The amount of total cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase and of the protein kinase isozymes present in mouse heart changes during development. During embryogenesis, the total cardiac protein kinase activity increases most markedly during the 6 days prior to birth. A maximum kinase level is achieved in the 7 day-old neonate, and then activity progressively declines to an adult level approximating that of the mid-embryo. The type II kinase exhibits a moderate increase during late embryogenesis which declines by the time of birth. The type I isozyme increases throughout embryogenesis and the first neonatal week to a maximum specific activity five-fold higher than the mid-embryogenesis level. The isozyme level then falls to an adult activity similar to the mid-embryonic. These changes in isozyme profile are reflected in a changing type I to type II kinase ratio of 1.1 at 13--14 days embryogenesis, 2.4 at birth, 3.0 in the 7 day-old neonates, and 1 in the adult heart. Thus, the two protein kinase isozymes change in association with the developmental process in an independent fashion.  相似文献

The fact that more boys are born than girls (104-107 boys for every 100 girls) has been known since 1662. Factors determining the sex ratio at birth rate are of 2 kinds: factors determining the primary sex ratio, i.e., sex ratio at conception, and factors determining the survival of the embryo in utero. Y-bearing and X-bearing sperm may have different motility or different survival time. The age of the ovum at fertilization and the chemical balance of the female genital tract have an effect on sex ratio at conception. High levels of circulating gonadotropins may imply a lower sex ratio at birth as well as a higher rate of dizygotic twinning. Male conception also appears to be higher early and late in the menstrual cycle. The fact that women exposed to higher coital rates conceive earlier in the menstrual cycle may account for the greater number of boys born during wars. Prenatal male mortality is reportedly highest between gestational months 3-5, lower between months 6-8, and higher again st term. Also, immunological interaction between mother and embryo may account for some sex selective spontaneous abortions. 3 sociodemographic determinants of sex ratio at birth are thought to be maternal age, paternal age, and birth order. Higher prenatal male mortality may be correlated with socioeconomic conditions, since higher socioeconomic status lowers prenatal mortality in general. The effects of parental age, birth order, and parity are less clear. Race is also a factor, since the sex ratio at birth for blacks is lower (102-104) than for whites (106). 14 univariate and 19 multivariate studies of effects of maternal age, paternal age, parity, birth order, race, and socioeconomic status on sex ratio at birth, with sample sizes in the millions from various countries have been analyzed. More boys are born to younger parents, and lower order births have a higher proportion of males than do higher order births. In the multivariate analyses, when the effects of paternal and and birth order are controlled for, the effect of maternal age weakens, and the effect of paternal age appears to be stronger. The effect of birth order remains but is very small, and the effect of race persists independent of any effect of other variables. Maternal age, parity, and birth order are positively correlated with proportion of male stillbirths. The results of the multivariate analyses show all of the effects to be very small, but that maternal age has no effect on sex ratio at birth; paternal age and birth order have a negative effect, and the racial effect persists independent of any other effect. The racial effect is clearly biologically determined at conception because blacks have higher levels of circulating gonadotropin and therefore a higher probability of conceiving girls. Parents in higher socioeconomic classes are more likely to have sons, but the effect is largely due to the excess male mortality during most of the gestational period.  相似文献

Development of urinary behavior from birth to adulthood was observed in six groups of beagles including normal males (NM), normal females (NF), males castrated soon after birth (CM), males castrated soon after birth and treated with testosterone (T) for the next 90 days (CMT), females exposed to T in utero (FTU), and females exposed to T in utero and during infancy, i.e., the first 30-40 days postpartum (FTUI). Prenatal treatment with T had masculinizing effects on juvenile urinary behavior in FTU and FTUI. On the other hand normal development of fully adult masculine urinary patterns in males and females necessitated both prenatal and postnatal androgenic stimulation. It was not necessary that T be present at the time the overt behavior developed. For example, adult male behavior appeared in FTUI at the same time as in NM, i.e., 6-10 months, although the supply of exogenous androgen in FTUI had been exhausted within 30-40 days after birth. CMT showed precocious development of all components of the adult male pattern. Development of adult responses was markedly retarded in most CM, and their performance did not equal that of NM at 23 months. They were then injected with TP which promptly evoked completely normal male urinary behavior. It is tentatively concluded that T acting before birth and during the juvenile period "prepares" critical CNS mechanisms so that when general maturation reaches the appropriate point adult male behavior develops. Although the preparatory role of T is essential, the behavior is not dependent on T after it has developed.  相似文献

Long days (short nights) (LD 16:8) and high temperatures (> 15°C) have an apterizing effect on the short day (LD 12:12) induced, presumptive gynopara of Aphis fabae. Transfer of presumptive gynoparae to long days (15°C) or to 25°C (short days) at varying times during postnatal development demonstrate that the adult form is determined by the second day of the second instar, i.e. 5 days after birth at 15°C. Transfer on day 1 induces maximum apterization with the proportion of aphids affected decreasing with age at transfer.Apterization induced by long days immediately after birth can, to some extent, be cancelled by return to short days but only up to day 4. Thus long days are morphogenetically more potent than short days at the beginning of larval development. At temperatures above 15°C the proportion of aphids apterized increases almost linearly.Apterized insects can be distinguished from juvenilized insects in the fifth-instar. Topical application of juvenile hormone (JH) induces both apterization and juvenilization of presumptive gynoparae but at different times during larval development, JH treatment during the early-instars promotes apterization but induces little juvenilization, whereas maximum juvenilization, without apterization, is produced by middle-instar treatment. The apterizing effects of JH are, thus, not due to its neotenic action.The response profile of JH-induced apterization is similar to that observed with long days and 25°C. It is suggested that such conditions increase endogenous JH levels in A. fabae. The three naturally occurring JH's differ in activity in the order JH I > JH II > JH III. Both long-day and JH-apterized insects switch from the normal ovipara production of the adult gynopara to vivipara production.  相似文献

Using experimental chicken houses at a site in central Argentina where the bug Triatoma infestans (Klug) is endemic, nine populations of this vector of Chagas disease were monitored during a 34-month period. Bug populations with four chickens as hosts were consistently larger than those with two chickens as hosts. Age structure of the bug population followed a similar pattern irrespective of the initial age structure. Egg to adult mortality was consistently around 98.5% and there was no consistent evidence for density-dependent mortality. There was some evidence for density dependence in fecundity and recruitment rates, but these were heavily constrained by low temperatures during the winter months. Nymphal development rates correlated most strongly with mean minimum temperatures rather than with mean maximum temperatures. We conclude that vector control using insecticides against this species would be most effective at the onset of winter, when recovery of any surviving populations would be inhibited by low temperatures.  相似文献

Ecologists have argued over rules of thumb that could be used to set priorities in configuring systems of reserves for preserving biological diversity. To evaluate these simple strategies, I assembled a particularly large and comprehensive data set on the land birds of the Fiji archipelago. I analyzed the species distribution on 220 islands to compare the running total of species preserved by differènt sequences of adding nature reserves to a hypothetical reserve system, treating each island as if it were a potential reserve. A strategy of maximizing the number of islands contributing to any given reserve area (maximum fragmentation) is much more effective at including species than a strategy of maximizing the size of the island components of a reserve (minimum fragmentation). Nevertheless the maximum fragmentation strategy is not a very good one. It is less effective than many random strategies, especially when about 2–10% of total area is to be set aside as reserve, and when only rare species are considered. A computer program was used to determine an optimal strategy by maximizing the number of additional species added for each unit of area added. This strategy is always substantially more effective at encompassing species diversity than either the maximum or minimum fragmentation strategies. It is suggested that the poor performance of the minimum fragmentation strategy is due principally to the presence of many smaller-island endemics within the Fiji archipelago. More generally, it is argued that the effect of fragmentation on species diversity depends on the geographic scale and isolation of the region under consideration. In these respects the Fiji Archipelago may be a particularly good model for continental reserve systems.  相似文献

We investigated patterns of maternal expenditure and its influenceon juvenile survival in the polygynous monomorphic guanaco (Lama guanicoe)in southern Chile from 1990 to 1994. Birth weight and growth rate(until age 1) of males and females were similar. Suckling ratesof males and females were not significantly different, althoughmothers of males rejected suckling attempts more often thanmothers of females during fall and winter. Mothers with sonsterminated suckling bouts in equal proportion as did motherswith daughters. Our estimated level of reproductive effort for guanacosfalls within the range of species exhibiting no sex-biased maternal expenditureon offspring. Mean yearly birth weight was negatively correlated withpopulation density. Mean suckling time throughout the year differedamong cohorts, as did the mean number of suckling attempts andrejected suckling attempts per hour throughout the year. Juvenilesurvival was estimated until age 1. Of the model with five covariatesincluding juvenile sex, birth weight, adult female aggressiontoward taggers, mean suckling time, and population density,only mean suckling time and population density were significantly relatedto survival. The risk ratio for mean suckling time indicatesthat the risk of mortality increases as suckling time increases,whereas the risk ratio for population density indicates thatthe risk of mortality decreases as population density increases.Under some conditions increasing population density may be correlatedwith lower offspring birth weight, yet enhanced juvenile survival.This effect on survival was possibly associated with the numberof predators on the study area from year to year.  相似文献

Amount and topography of small lymphoid nodules (SLN) have been studied by means of the quantitative method in flat total preparations of the small and large intestine obtained from 111 corpses of persons of both sex (from newborn up to old age). Total amount of the SLN in the large intestine wall in all age periods exceeds that of the SLN in the small intestine wall. From birth up to the period of the 1 childhood total amount of the SLN increases successively, reaching (51 +/- 14) X 10(2) in the small and (74 +/- 11) X 10(2) in the large intestine at the age of 4-7 years. Beginning from 8 years of age up to old age, total amount of the SLN decreases successively, to a more degree in the wall of the small intestine than in the large intestine. The arrangement density of the SLN in the large intestine wall essentially exceeds that of the SLN in the small intestine wall during the all age periods. From birth up to early childhood the arrangement density of the SLN increases and then gradually decreases both in the small and large intestine. This demonstrates that development of the SLN takes place during the first 4-7 years of the human life, in contrast to the lymph nodes and tonsils, their greatest development takes place during juvenile and adolescent age.  相似文献
