Terrestrial, but not aquatic, species of snakes have hepatic portal veins with a corkscrew morphology immediately posterior of the liver. Relatively large volumes of venous blood are associated with this region, and the corkscrew vein has been proposed to function as a bidirectional valve that impedes gravitational shifts of intravascular volume. To better understand the functional significance of the corkscrew anatomy, we investigated the histology and contractile mechanisms in isolated corkscrew segments of the hepatic portal vein of a yellow rat snake (Pantherophis obsoletus). Morphologically, the corkscrew portal vein is here shown to have two distinct layers of smooth muscle – an inner circular layer, and an outer longitudinal layer, separated by a layer of collagen, – whereas only a single circular layer of smooth muscle is present in the adjacent posterior caval vein. Low frequency (~ 0.3 cycles*min? 1) spontaneous and catecholamine-induced rhythms were observed in 11% and 89% of portal vein segments, respectively, but neither spontaneous nor agonist-induced cycling was observed in adjacent posterior (non-corkscrew) caval veins. Catecholamines, angiotensin II, or stretch increased the amplitude and/or frequency of contractile cycles. Ouabain, verapamil or indomethacin, but not tetrodotoxin, α-, or ß-adrenergic receptor antagonists, inhibited cyclical contractions indicating a dependence of these cycles on Na+/K+ ATPase, extracellular Ca2+ and prostanoid(s). These data suggest that the rhythmic contractility of the corkscrew segment of the ophidian portal vein may act in conjunction with its morphological features to improve venous return and to prevent retrograde shifts of blood that might otherwise pool in posterior veins.  相似文献

-crotamine is a small toxic protein (42 amino acid residues with three disulphide bridges) present in the venom of Crotallus durissus terrificus. Molecular parameters (R g=13.7 Å, S=3,000 Å2, V=9,200 Å3 and D max=40 Å) were derived from SAXS curves obtained from a solution of this protein at pH=4.5. An excellent agreement between the experimental distance distribution curve and that calculated from a model consisting of two lobes linked by the Cys(18)-Cys(30) disulphide bridge.  相似文献

Long-term studies have revealed population declines in fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. In birds, and particularly amphibians, these declines are a global phenomenon whose causes are often unclear. Among reptiles, snakes are top predators and therefore a decline in their numbers may have serious consequences for the functioning of many ecosystems. Our results show that, of 17 snake populations (eight species) from the UK, France, Italy, Nigeria and Australia, 11 have declined sharply over the same relatively short period of time with five remaining stable and one showing signs of a marginal increase. Although the causes of these declines are currently unknown, we suspect that they are multi-faceted (such as habitat quality deterioration, prey availability), and with a common cause, e.g. global climate change, at their root.  相似文献

Species diversity of reptiles is much higher in Sundarban than in other mangrove ecosystems in India. Presently snakes are declining in Sundarban due to habitat loss caused by tremendous population pressure. Besides, irresponsible killing to avoid snakebite both from poisonous and nonpoisonous varieties is another reason for the gradual declining snake population. According to an intensive household survey in 35 villages in Sundarban, about 22 species (five poisonous and 17 non-poisonous) of snakes have been identified and there appears to have been a general decline in densities. On the contrary, a large number of people are bitten and die from snakebite every year with 0.57 and 0.34 vulnerability and mortality rate per 10,000 people, respectively. The two most commonly observed poisonous species are the common krait, Bungarus caeruleus (51 %) and common cobra, Naja naja (40 %), and that of non-poisonous varieties are the Ptyas mucosus (41 %), Typhlina bramina (34 %), Xenochrophis piscator (12 %), and Amphiesma stolata (10 %). Apart from killing of snakes out of fear; habitat loss, unscientific handling of snakes by snake catchers and charmers, and netting by fisherman contributes to snake mortality to a large extent; 72 % killed snakes are of poisonous varieties, 60 % of which are B. caeruleus, the most venomous snake in Sundarban. This paper is an attempt to highlight some of the important conservation efforts like the introduction of snake firms, alternative employment channels for the snake charmers and catchers, and mass awareness campaign through panchayet (village level governing body) and local NGOs.  相似文献

The durations of the phases of the cell cycle were measured at different levels in the jejunal crypts of male Balb/c mice. A mean cell cycle time of 12.3 h was found for the whole crypt. In cell positions 1 and 2, the cell cycle time was 16.7 h, and this time steadily decreased to a value of between 10 and 11 h for cell positions above 11. It is concluded that basally situated crypt cells in the mouse are cycling relatively slowly, and that they form the functional stem cell pool for the crypt. These cells may also compose the potential stem cell pool which repopulates the crypt after death of proliferative cells.  相似文献

“Anilioidea” is a likely paraphyletic assemblage of pipe snakes that includes extant Aniliidae from equatorial South America, Uropeltoidea from South and Southeast Asia, and a fossil record that consists primarily of isolated precloacal vertebrae ranging from the earliest Late Cretaceous and includes geographic distributions in North America, South America, Europe, and Africa. Articulated precloacal vertebrae from the middle Eocene Bridger Formation of Wyoming, attributed to Borealilysia nov. gen., represent an unambiguous North American aniliid record and prompts a reconsideration of described pipe snakes and their resultant biogeographic histories. On the basis of vertebral apomorphies, the vast majority of reported fossils cannot be assigned to “Anilioidea”. Instead, most records represent stem taxa and macrostomatans erroneously assigned to anilioids on the basis of generalized features associated with fossoriality. A revised fossil record demonstrates that the only extralimital distributions of fossil “anilioids” consist of the North American aniliid record, and there is no unambiguous fossil record of Old World taxa. The occurrence of aniliids in the mid-high latitudes of the late early Eocene of North America is consistent with histories of northward shifts in equatorial ecosystems during the early Paleogene Greenhouse.  相似文献

Togay, a locality from Ol’khon Island, Baykal Lake, Russia, has yielded a fauna of snakes of Late Middle or early Late Miocene age. It is located in a broad area from which no Neogene snake has been reported; therefore, it represents an important landmark. The fauna includes a non-erycine boid, two or three colubrids, a viperid of the ‘oriental complex’ of Vipera, and perhaps another viperid. This assemblage is astonishingly reminiscent of the snake faunas from the late Early and early Middle Miocene from western and central Europe, it being understood that Miocene faunas are practically unknown in the geographically intermediary area. It may be entertained whether a homogenous snake fauna inhabited Eurasia (except the southern part of the continent) during the Miocene.  相似文献

Examination of 12 healthy volunteers aged 20–56 years was performed to study the EEG changes caused by a tonic squeeze of the distal joint of the little finger of the left and then the right hand. This stimulation caused painful sensations of different intensity (pain on the right was stronger). Spectral power was measured in the ( 1 (8–10.5 Hz) and (2 ranges (10.5–13 Hz) under different conditions. Weak pain led to an increase in the power of the (1 and 2 ranges in the occipital regions. With strong pain, the power of 1 waves increased bilaterally in the posterior regions (O 1, O 2, T 6), as well as in the left frontal region (F 3, F 7). The powers of the 1 and 2 ranges substantially increased relative to the background level after the strong nociceptive stimulation ceased. Major incubation products in feeding experiments with the sodium salt of 7-(5-butyl-furan-2-yl)heptanoic acid (3) on suspension cultures of Saccharum spec. are the unusual F-acids (4a) and (4b). They possess in contrast to natural monomethyl substituted F-acids a methyl substituent in the 4-position of the furan ring. Unexpectedly, the dimethyl substituted F-acids (4c) and (4d) were found only in very small amounts. The detection and structure elucidation of the methylation products (4a)–(4d) was achieved predominantly by GC-MS analysis of the corresponding tetrahydrofuran derivatives (5a)–(5d).  相似文献

We investigated the significance of hydrophobic and charged residues 218–226 on the structure and functions of apoA-I and their contribution to the biogenesis of HDL. Adenovirus-mediated gene transfer of apoA-I[L218A/L219A/V221A/L222A] in apoA-I−/− mice decreased plasma cholesterol and apoA-I levels to 15% of wild-type (WT) control mice and generated pre-β- and α4-HDL particles. In apoA-I−/− × apoE−/− mice, the same mutant formed few discoidal and pre-β-HDL particles that could not be converted to mature α-HDL particles by excess LCAT. Expression of the apoA-I[E223A/K226A] mutant in apoA-I−/− mice caused lesser but discrete alterations in the HDL phenotype. The apoA-I[218–222] and apoA-I[E223A/K226A] mutants had 20% and normal capacity, respectively, to promote ABCA1-mediated cholesterol efflux. Both mutants had ∼65% of normal capacity to activate LCAT in vitro. Biophysical analyses suggested that both mutants affected in a distinct manner the structural integrity and plasticity of apoA-I that is necessary for normal functions. We conclude that the alteration of the hydrophobic 218–222 residues of apoA-I disrupts apoA-I/ABCA1 interactions and promotes the generation of defective pre-β particles that fail to mature into α-HDL subpopulations, thus resulting in low plasma apoA-I and HDL. Alterations of the charged 223, 226 residues caused milder but discrete changes in HDL phenotype.  相似文献

1. Specific lipoproteins binding alpha-tocopherol but not its known metabolites have been isolated and identified from cytosol of rat intestinal mucosa and from serum. 2. A timestudy of the appearance of the orally administered alpha-[(3)H]tocopherol with these lipoproteins indicates that very-low-density lipoprotein of serum acts as a carrier of the vitamin. 3. The involvement of the mucosal lipoprotein in the absorption of the vitamin from the intestine has been inferred from observations on the amounts of alpha-tocopherol in serum of orotic acid-fed rats where release of lipoproteins from the liver to serum is completely inhibited. A considerable decrease in the association of alpha-tocopherol with serum very-low-density lipoprotein under this condition is interpreted to mean that serum lipoproteins are limiting factors for the transport of the vitamin across the intestine and that this is possibly effected by exchange of alpha-tocopherol between serum very-low-density lipoprotein and mucosal lipoprotein.  相似文献

Studies of voluntary exposure to ultraviolet‐B (UVB) radiation from the sun in the field were conducted in the southern US and Jamaica for 15 species of lizards and snakes occupying various habitats. Species were sorted into four zones of UVB exposure ranging from a median UV index of 0.35 for zone 1 to 3.1 for zone 4. Guidelines for UVB exposure in captivity of these and species occupying similar light environments are presented. Data for most species were collected during mid‐day during the spring breeding season, which appeared to be the time of maximum exposure. For two species of Sceloporus studied more intensively there was significant variation of exposure among times of the day and among seasons. So, all‐day studies over the entire active season are necessary to fully understand the pattern of natural exposure for a particular diurnal species. Environmental and body temperature and thermoregulation as well as UVB/vitamin D photoregulation influences exposure to UVB. Regressions allowing the inter‐conversion of readings among some meters with different detector sensitivities are presented. Readings of natural sunlight predict the same photobiosynthetic potential for vitamin D as the same reading from artificial sources whose wavelength distribution within the UVB band of the source is comparable to that of sunlight. Research approaches to further increase our understanding of vitamin D and UVB use and requirements for squamate reptiles in captivity are outlined. Coccidian oöcysts recovered from the faeces of rough earth snakes Virginia striatula (Serpentes: Colubridae) were found to represent two previously unreported eimerians. Oöcysts of Eimeria desotoensis n. sp. were found in 5/32 (16%) of the snakes and were spherical to ellipsoidal, 18.4 × 17.2 (15–21.5 × 15–19.5) μm, with a thin, single-layered wall; their shape-index (length/width) was 1.07 (1.00–1.23). A micropyle and oöcyst residuum were absent; polar granule were present in 33% of the oöcysts. The sporocysts were ovoidal, 11.5 × 7.6 (10.5–13 × 7–8) μm, with a Stieda body; their shape-index was 1.51 (1.30–1.68). The sporocyst residuum was moderate in size and composed of a cluster of granules. Oöcysts of Eimeria hobartsmithi n. sp. were found in 2/32 (6%) of the snakes and were subspherical to ellipsoidal, 18.0 × 15.7 (16–20 × 15–17) μm, with a thin, single-layered wall; their shape-index was 1.15 (1.02–1.32). A micropyle, oöcyst residuum and polar granule were absent. The sporocysts were elongate, 13.2 × 6.3 (12–14.5 × 6–6.5) μm, with a Stieda body; their shape-index was 2.10 (1.88–2.34). A large sporocyst residuum was present in each sporocyst, often obscuring the sporozoites. In addition to the two new species, oöcysts of E. striatula Upton & McAllister, 1990 were observed in 38% of the snakes.  相似文献

Deviations between observed and simulated discharge in the basins along the borders of the Czech Republic with Austria and Germany provide outputs which enable to follow changes in runoff. The three basins range in area from 100 to 200 km2 and the experimental basin Liz with an area of 0.99 km2. The selected experimental catchments are situated in or close to the National Park of the ?umava Mts. This region is described also in Tesa? et al. (2006). Results indicate that changes in runoff appear to be related to damages in forest cover caused by wind disasters and insects damages.Daily time series used for simulations are approximately 40 years long and 20 years in the experimental basin. Two different models of the rainfall — runoff process have been used for simulations and the outputs provide comparable results. The models are the conceptual model Sacramento (Burnash, 1995) and the model BROOK’90 (Federer, 1993). The second model distinguishes the details concerning evapotranspiration, including transpiration, rain and snow interception and snow and soil evaporation.The indicated runoff changes seem to be rather complex. After deforestation the volume of runoff generally increases and peak flows of floods are higher, but low flow in rainless periods show complicated courses.  相似文献

Airway exposure levels of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) are known to determine type I versus type II helper T cell induced experimental asthma. While low doses of LPS derive Th2 inflammatory responses, high (and/or intermediate) LPS levels induce Th1- or Th17-dominant responses. The present paper develops a mathematical model of the phenotypic switches among three Th phenotypes (Th1, Th2, and Th17) in response to various LPS levels. In the present work, we simplify the complex network of the interactions between cells and regulatory molecules. The model describes the nonlinear cross-talks between the IL-4/Th2 activities and a key regulatory molecule, transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), in response to high, intermediate, and low levels of LPS. The model characterizes development of three phenotypes (Th1, Th2, and Th17) and predicts the onset of a new phenotype, Th17, under the tight control of TGF-β. Analysis of the model illustrates the mono-, bi-, and oneway-switches in the key regulatory parameter sets in the absence or presence of time delays. The model also predicts coexistence of those phenotypes and Th1- or Th2-dominant immune responses in a spatial domain under various biochemical and bio-mechanical conditions in the microenvironment.  相似文献
