An experiment was performed to study the glucose kinetics of crossbred Holstein cattle feeding on either hay or 5% urea-treated rice straw during early lactation (30 days post partum), mid-lactation (120 days post partum) and late lactation (210 days post partum). Two breeds: Holstein FriesianxRed Sindhi (50:50 = 50% HF) and Holstein FriesianxRed Sindhi (87.5:12.5 = 87.5% HF) were used. In early lactating 87.5% HF animals feeding on either hay or urea-treated rice straw, the high milk yields and lactose secretion were related to glucose uptake by the udder and udder blood flow as compared with those of 50% HF animals. Marked decreases in udder blood flow, glucose uptake, lactose secretion and milk yield were apparent in mid- and late lactation of both groups of 87.5% HF animals. In contrast, both groups of 50% HF animals showed no significant changes in udder blood flow, udder glucose uptake, lactose secretion and milk yields throughout the course of lactation. Total glucose entry rate using 3-[3H] glucose infusion, recycling of glucose carbon and plasma glucose clearance significantly increased during late lactation for 50 and 87.5% HF animals feeding on urea-treated rice straw. The utilization rates of glucose using [U-(14)C] glucose infusion were not significantly different among groups of animals and periods of lactation. It can be concluded that 87.5% HF animals have the genetic potential for a higher milk yield, but a shorter peak yield and poorer persistence in comparison with 50% HF animals. Changes in the utilization of glucose by the mammary gland for milk production in both groups of crossbred animals during feeding on either hay or urea-treated rice straw would be dependent on intramammary changes.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine how evaporative cooling modifies body function with respect to water metabolism and other variables relevant to milk synthesis in crossbred cattle. The study was conducted on two groups of 0.875HF:0.125RS crossbred Holstein cattle (87.5%) housed in an open-sided barn with a tiled roof (non-cooled animals) and in a close-sided barn under an evaporative cooling system (cooled animals). The maximum ambient temperature and relative humidity for the non-cooled group were 33 degrees C and 61%, with the corresponding values for the evaporatively cooled barn being 28 degrees C and 84%, respectively. The temperature humidity index (THI) of under non-cooled conditions was higher (P < 0.05) than that in the cooled barn. Rectal temperatures and respiration rates of non-cooled animals were higher (P < 0.05) than those of cooled animals. Daily dry matter intake (DMI) of cooled animals was higher while water intakes were lower (P < 0.05) than those of non-cooled animals. The mean absolute values of plasma volume, blood volume, and extracellular fluid (ECF) of cooled animals were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those of non-cooled animals throughout all stages of lactation. Milk yields of cooled animals were higher by 42%, 36% and 79% on average than those of non-cooled animals during early-, mid- and late-lactation, respectively. The decline in milk yields as lactation advances was markedly apparent in late-lactating non-cooled animals, while no significant changes in milk composition at different stages of lactation were observed in either group. Mean arterial plasma concentrations, arteriovenous concentration differences (A-V differences) and the extraction ratio across the mammary gland for acetate, glucose and triglyceride of cooled animals were not significantly different compared with values for non-cooled animals. No differences were seen in plasma hormonal levels for triiodotyronine (T(3)) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), but plasma cortisol and thyroxine (T(4)) levels tended to be lower in non-cooled animals. This study suggests that low cooling temperature accompanied by high humidity influences a galactopoietic effect, in part through increases in ECF, blood volume and plasma volume in association with an increase in DMI, which partitions the distribution of nutrients to the mammary gland for milk synthesis. Cooled animals were unable to maintain high milk yield as lactation advances even though a high level of body fluids was maintained during long-term cooled exposure. The decline in milk yield, coinciding with a decrease in net energy for lactation as lactation advances, could be attributed to a local change within the mammary gland.  相似文献

The metabolism and action of insulin and glucagon were investigated in goats during mid lactating (50 days postpartum) and during the dry period. The animals were fed hay and concentrate during lactation (1:1) and only hay during dry period. Pulse doses of unlabelled insulin and glucagon were injected intravenously. The disappearance of insulin from the circulation was faster during lactation than during dry period; the metabolic clearance rate of insulin was significantly increased during lactation. In contrast, the kinetic parameters of glucagon disappearance were very similar during the two periods. Basal plasma hormones (i.e. before hormone injection) were higher during lactation than during dry period; the molar ratio insulin:glucagon was left unchanged. The increase in plasma insulin following glucagon-stimulated hyperglycaemia was similar during the two periods. The ability of insulin to elicit a decrease in blood glucose was markedly impaired during lactation when compared to dry period. In contrast the ability of glucagon to increase blood glucose was slightly improved during lactation. Those endocrine changes could be related to the effect of both lactation and diet.  相似文献

Cutaneous evaporation is the main avenue by which cattle dissipate heat via the involvement of sweat glands and other skin components. The difference in skin morphology between B. indicus and B. taurus has been recognized, as well as differences in their ability to tolerate heat. The objective of this study was to compare skin morphology between B. indicus, B. taurus, and their crossbreds. Skin samples of Sahiwal (B. indicus) (n?=?10, reddish brown skin) and Holstein Friesian (HF) (B. taurus) (n?=?10, black and white skin) and crossbred of HF75% (n?=?10, black and white skin) and HF87.5 % (n?=?10, black and white skin) were biopsied for histological study, followed by measurement of skin components. The results indicated that breed significantly affected sweat gland morphology. The shape of the sweat gland, as indicated by the ratio of length/diameter, in Sahiwal was baggier in shape compared to HF (5.99 and 9.52) while values for crossbreds were intermediate (7.82, 8.45). The density and volume of sweat glands in Sahiwal (1,058 glands/cm2; 1.60 μ3?×?10?6) were higher than in HF (920 glands/cm2; 0.51 μ3x10?6) and crossbreds, both HF 75 % (709 glands/cm2; 0.68 μ3?×?10?6) and HF 87.5 % (691 glands/cm2; 0.61 μ3?×?10?6) respectively. However, capillary surface area was greater for HF (2.07 cm2) compared to Sahiwal (1.79 cm2); accordingly, the lower genetic fraction of HF in crossbred cattle showed less capillary surface area (1.83 and 1.9 cm2 for HF75% and HF87.5 %) (P?<?0.01). Nerve density was not significantly different between Sahiwal and HF but was higher in the crossbred (P?<?0.01) cattle. Moreover, the effect of skin color (black and white) was evaluated and it was found that there was an interaction (P?<?0.01) between breed and skin color on the skin components. This study reveals that there are differences in skin morphology among B. indicus, B. taurus and their crossbreds, with these differences being more or less related to the genetic fraction of HF. This may imply that capability for cutaneous evaporative heat loss and tolerance to heat in crossbred cattle could be related to skin morphology.  相似文献

Protein restriction during the suckling phase can malprogram rat offspring to a lean phenotype associated with metabolic dysfunctions later in life. We tested whether protein-caloric restriction during lactation can exacerbate the effect of a high-fat (HF) diet at adulthood. To test this hypothesis, we fed lactating Wistar dams with a low-protein (LP; 4% protein) diet during the first 2 weeks of lactation or a normal-protein (NP; 23% protein) diet throughout lactation. Rat offspring from NP and LP mothers received a normal-protein diet until 60 days old. At this time, a batch of animals from both groups was fed an HF (35% fat) diet, while another received an NF (7% fat) diet. Maternal protein-caloric restriction provoked lower body weight and fat pad stores, hypoinsulinemia, glucose intolerance, higher insulin sensitivity, reduced insulin secretion and altered autonomic nervous system (ANS) function in adult rat offspring. At 90 days old, NP rats fed an HF diet in adulthood displayed obesity, impaired glucose homeostasis and altered insulin secretion and ANS activity. Interestingly, the LP/HF group also presented fat pad and body weight gain, altered glucose homeostasis, hyperleptinemia and impaired insulin secretion but at a smaller magnitude than the NP-HF group. In addition, LP/HF rats displayed elevated insulin sensitivity. We concluded that protein-caloric restriction during the first 14 days of life programs the rat metabolism against obesity and insulin resistance exacerbation induced by an obesogenic HF diet.  相似文献

Daily voluntary intakes of feed by each of 89 Holstein cows were compared between day 220 of gestation and day 30 postpartum over a 21-month period. Diets designed to meet NRC requirements and which contained either chopped hay (29 cows), hay crop silage (HCS; 30 cows) or corn silage (CS; 30 cows) were compared prepartum (27 to 0 days), peripartum (1 day before to 3 days after calving) and postpartum (days 4 to 30 postpartum). Mixed rations, fed during lactation, were 60% forage and 40% concentrate dry matter (DM). Cow management was similar to commercial operations. The experimental hypothesis was that pre-disposition for partum and postpartum disorders (abnormal) could be related either to voluntary intake of different diets or to physical traits. Intakes (DM or estimated net energy) across diets decreased 30% between days 7 and 1 prepartum and averaged 18% and 20% lower peripartum and postpartum, respectively, in abnormal cows than in control cows. Seasonal effects on intakes were significant. In general, changes in body weight and condition and differences in udder edema and milk yield reflected intakes. The results support the original hypothesis.  相似文献

Studies were carried out to determine the means by which holotrich protozoa can maintain their numbers within the rumen against the washout effect associated with the flow of ingesta. When a diet composed of 2 kg of concentrate and 1.5 kg of rice straw was fed to Holstein cows, about a fourfold increase in holotrich numbers per ml of rumen fluid was observed within 1 h after the commencement of feeding, and an abrupt decrease followed. This fluctuation in numbers was not related to the time of feeding. A sole feeding of 2 kg of concentrate had almost the same effect on the holotrichs as a sole feeding of 1.5 kg of rice straw. Administration of either 2 kg of concentrate or 1.5 kg of rice straw through the rumen fistula caused similar changes, though the extent of response to the former was greater than that to the latter. The administration of either 0.7 kg of starch or 0.2 kg of glucose through the fistula had a relatively minor effect on the holotrich population. Addition of rice straw to 0.5 kg of concentrate increased the change in numbers, but its addition had little, if any, effect when 1 kg of concentrate was fed. These results suggested that the fluctuation in holotrich numbers was related not only to the nature or component of feed but also to other factors such as the quantity or volume of a diet and the act of ingesting feed. Increasing the number of feedings up to eight times per day at 3-h intervals caused a decrease in the peak heights of holotrich numbers per milliliter of rumen fluid. A thick protozoal mass which primarily consisted of holotrichs was found on the wall of the reticulum of Holstein steers slaughtered after overnight starvation. These findings suggest that holotrichs would usually sequester on the reticulum wall and migrate into the rumen only for a few hours after feeding, and that this mode of behavior would be essential for holotrichs to maintain their population within the rumen of cattle. Possible mechanisms of the migration are also discussed.  相似文献

The present study investigated the occurrence of 2 autosomal recessive genetic diseases, bovine citrullinaemia and deficiency of uridine monophosphate synthase (DUMPS), in Indian Holstein cattle. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis was performed on a group of 642 animals, mainly HF and HF crossbred cattle, to identify carriers of these diseases. None of the animals were carriers of citrullinaemia or DUMPS. It is possible that with the mounting selection pressure, the international gene pool may diminish, and consequently the risk of dissemination of inherited defects will increase. It is therefore recommended to screen breeding bulls for their breed-specific genetic diseases before they are inducted in artificial insemination programmes, to minimize the risk.  相似文献

To determine the effect of monensin, a carboxylic polyether ionophore antibiotic, on the bacterial population structure of dairy cattle colonic contents, we fed six lactating Holstein cows a diet containing monensin (600 mg day−1) or an identical diet without monensin. Fresh waste samples were taken directly from the animals once a month for 3 months and assayed for their bacterial population structure via 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. In total 6,912 16S rRNA genes were examined, comprising 345 and 315 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) from the monensin fed and control animals, respectively. Coverage estimates of the OTUs identified were 87.6% for the monensin fed and 88.3% for the control colonic content derived library. Despite this high level of coverage, no significant difference was found between the libraries down to the genus level. Thus we concluded that although monensin is believed to increase milk production in dairy cattle by altering the bacterial population structure within the bovine gastrointestinal tract, we were unable to identify any significant difference in the bacterial population structure of the colonic contents of monensin fed vs. the control dairy cattle, down to the genus level.  相似文献

1. [U-14C]Glucose and [3-3H]glucose were infused into fed and starved lactating goats in order to study glucose metabolism in the mammary gland. 2. Glucose carbon was oxidized and metabolizet to milk lactose, citrate and triacylglycerol in the lactating goat udder. 3. Recycling of glucose carbon in the lactating animal accounted for 10-20% of the total glucose turnover in the whole animal. Recycling of glucose 6-phosphate in the udder accounted for about 25% of the glucose 6-phosphate metabolized. 4. Flux of glucose 6-phosphate through the pentose phosphate pathway was sufficient to account for 34% of the NADPH required for fatty acid synthesis in the gland in the fed animal. 5. Net metabolism of glucose 6-phosphate via the pentose phosphate pathway accounted for 17.8 and 1.2% of the glucose phosphorylated by the mammary gland in the fed and starved animal respectively. Metabolism of glucose 6-phosphate via the pentose phosphate pathway was sufficient to account for all the CO2 produced from glucose in the fed animal, but only 17% of the CO2 produced from glucose in the starved animal.  相似文献

The nitrogen economy of the Nubian ibex (Capra ibex nubiana), a ruminant that inhabits harsh deserts, was studied in the laboratory when fed three diets of different quality. Even on the low quality roughage (wheat straw) the ibex was found capable of balancing its nitrogen economy. On feeds low in protein, recycling of urea played a major role in helping the ibex maintaining a balanced nitrogen metabolism. When on wheat straw, the ibex recycled 71.6% of the urea synthesized in its liver. When on feeds lower in protein, blood urea concentration dropped (from 11.4 mM when on alfalfa hay to 3.2 mM when on wheat straw). GFR that amounted to 44.28 ml/min when on alfalfa hay decreased to 28.97 ml/min when on wheat straw. Reabsorption of urea amounted to 48% of the urea filtered when on alfalfa hay and increased to 78.8% on wheat straw.  相似文献

Wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) is a high moisture feed containing rapidly digestible, non-forage fiber and protein. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of substituting WCGF and corn stover for alfalfa hay in total mixed ration (TMR) silage on lactation performance and nitrogen balance in dairy cows. Nine multiparous Holstein dairy cows (BW = 532 ± 28.9 kg and day in milk = 136 ± 5.6 d; mean ± SD) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 21-d periods (14 d of diet adaption and 7 d of sample collection). Groups were balanced for parity, day in milk, and milk production and consumed one of three treatment diets during each period. The treatment diets were fed as TMR and contained similar concentrate mixtures and corn silage but different proportions of roughage and WCGF. The three treatments were: (1) 0% WCGF, 0% corn stover, and 22.1% alfalfa hay (0% WCGF); (2) 6.9% WCGF, 3.4% corn stover, and 11.8% alfalfa hay (7% WCGF); and (3) 13.3% WCGF, 4.9% corn stover, and 3.9% alfalfa hay (13.3% WCGF). Compared to the 0% WCGF diet, the cows fed the 7% and 13.3% WCGF diets had a higher milk yield and concentration of milk fat, protein, lactose, and total solids. Effective degradability of DM was higher in the cows fed the 7% and 13.3% WCGF diets than it was with the 0% WCGF diet. Cows fed the 13.3% WCGF had a higher CP effective degradability and a lower rumen undegraded protein than cows fed the 0% WCGF diet. The concentration of ruminal volatile fatty acids and ammonia-N was higher in cows fed the 7% and 13.3% WCGF diets than cows fed the 0% WCGF diet. The fecal N was lower in cows fed the 7% and 13.3% WCGF diets than it was in cows fed the 0% WCGF diet. Milk N secretion and milk N as a percent of N intake were higher in cows fed the 13.3% WCGF diet than cows fed the 0% and 7% WCGF diets. In conclusion, it appears that feeding a TMR silage containing WCGF and corn stover in combination, replacing a portion of alfalfa hay, may improve lactation performance and nitrogen utilization for lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

Aims

Effects of different soil amendments were investigated on methane (CH4) emission, soil quality parameters and rice productivity in irrigated paddy field of Bangladesh.

Methods

The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with five treatments and three replications. The experimental treatments were urea (220 kg ha?1) + rice straw compost (2 t ha?1) as a control, urea (170 kg ha?1) + rice straw compost (2 t ha?1) + silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + sesbania biomass (2 t ha?1 ) + silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + azolla biomass (2 t ha?1) + cyanobacterial mixture 15 kg ha?1 silicate fertilizer, urea (170 kg ha?1) + cattle manure compost (2 t ha?1) + silicate fertilizer.

Results

The average of two growing seasons CH4 flux 132 kg ha?1 was recorded from the conventional urea (220 kg ha?1) with rice straw compost incorporated field plot followed by 126.7 (4 % reduction), 130.7 (1.5 % reduction), 116 (12 % reduction) and 126 (5 % reduction) kg CH4 flux ha?1 respectively, with rice straw compost, sesbania biomass, azolla anabaena and cattle manure compost in combination urea and silicate fertilizer applied plots. Rice grain yield was increased by 15 % and 10 % over the control (4.95 Mg ha?1) with silicate plus composted cattle manure and silicate plus azolla anabaena, respectively. Soil quality parameters such as soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, microbial biomass carbon, soil redox status and cations exchange capacity were improved with the added organic materials and azolla biofertilizer amendments with silicate slag and optimum urea application (170 kg ha?1) in paddy field.

Conclusion

Integrated application of silicate fertilizer, well composted organic manures and azolla biofertilizer could be an effective strategy to minimize the use of conventional urea fertilizer, reducing CH4 emissions, improving soil quality parameters and increasing rice productivity in subtropical countries like Bangladesh.  相似文献

BLood samples were collected from 89 Holstein cows on days 220 and 250 of gestation, within 24 hr prepartum and postpartum and on day 30 postpartum. Balanced diets which contained either chopped hay (29 cows), hay crop silage (HCS; 30 cows) or corn silage (CS; 30 cows) were fed from day 220 of gestation to day 30 postpartum. The purpose was to determine if variations in certain blood traits were indicative of peripartum and postpartum disorders. The blood traits evaluated were concentrations of plasma total protein, whole blood hemoglobin, packed cell volume, and white blood cells, and serum glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (SGOT), glucose, urea nitrogen, calcium, inorganic phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and sodium. No blood trait was useful to predict a disorder prior to its visual signs with one possible exception. Serum glucose and calcium were lower and SGOT and magnesium were higher peripartum which was prior to death of three cows from fat cow syndrome.  相似文献

These studies have been designed to test whether 1,3-butanediol (BD) alleviates milk fat depression in lactating cows, to observe physiological changes in blood and rumen constituents when BD is fed to cows or growing cattle, and to test the effects of BD on growth rates and feed efficiency in growing cattle. In trials with lactating cows, milk fat percentage and total fat production were higher for cows fed BD than for controls. Feeding BD to either cows or growing cattle had no consistent effect on rumen pH or relative concentrations of rumen volatile fatty acids. 1,3-Butanediol feeding had little effect on blood glucose concentrations. Feeding more than 4% BD in diets sometimes caused increased concentrations of blood ketones. In trials where growing cattle were fed 4% BD, rates of gain and feed efficiency were at least as good as and often better than those of cattle fed the same diets without BD. Body composition was not significantly affected. 1,3-Butanediol can be utilized effectively as an energy source for cattle and causes no obvious problems with 4% in diets.  相似文献

The net uptake and oxidation of glucose by leg muscle, pregnant uterus, and lactating mammary gland, together with the rate of irreversible loss and oxidation of glucose in the whole body of Merino ewes are reported. The ewes were fed on either chaffed oaten hay (OH), chaffed lucerne hay (L), or a mixture of chaffed oaten and lucerne hays (OHL). Measurements were made during five different physiological states: dry (nonpregnant), at 94 and 125 days of pregnancy, and at 20 and 50 days after lambing. Whole body glucose irreversible loss was related significantly to intake of metabolizable energy and fleece-free maternal body weight and this relation was the same in dry, pregnant and lactating ewes. The proportion of glucose oxidized in the whole body was unaffected by diet, but was lower in pregnant than in dry or lactating ewes. Some 6% of whole body carbon dioxide (CO2) production was derived from oxidation of glucose, and in ewes eating the OH diet this proportion was lower than for ewes fed on other diets. The proportion of CO2 derived from glucose was lower in pregnant ewes than in dry and lactating ewes. Leg (muscle) glucose uptake was lower in ewes fed on the OH diet than in ewes given the other diets. This arose partly because of decreased blood flow to the leg in ewes fed OH. Muscle glucose uptake, corrected for lactate output, accounted for 20, 44 and 34% of glucose irreversible loss in ewes fed OH, OHL and L respectively. There was no significant effect of physiological state on glucose uptake by leg muscle. The maximum contribution glucose uptake, corrected for output of lactate, could make to leg muscle oxygen consumption was 31% and there were no differences due to diet or physiological state. Uterine glucose uptake was 10.5 mg min-1 kg-1, and was unaffected by diet and stage of pregnancy. Glucose uptake was maintained, despite a decline in blood flow per kilogram of uterus from 399 to 237 ml min-1 kg-1, between 94 and 125 days of pregnancy by an increase in arteriovenous difference of glucose over the same period from 2.8 to 4.4 mg 100 ml-1. Total uptake of glucose by the uterus increased from 26 to 47 mg min-1 between 94 and 125 days of pregnancy. The proportion of glucose irreversible loss accounted for by uterine uptake increased from 46 to 65% between 94 and 125 days, and was greater for ewes fed OH (84%) than L (46%) at 125 days of pregnancy. A maximum of 71% of milk lactose could have been derived directly from glucose; 17% of glucose taken up by the mammary gland was oxidized, contributing to 20% of mammary CO2 output. The objective of the experiment was to determine the effects of fat supplementation on cyclicity, progesterone concentration, follicular development, conception rate, embryo mortality, and plasma concentrations of prostalglandin F metabolite (PGFM) in cattle. The hypothesis of this experiment was that feeding flaxseed, which is a source rich in C18:3, would increase conception rate of dairy cows due to decreased plasma PGFM concentrations. A total of 138 lactating Holstein cows were allotted at calving to three groups of 46 cows, blocked for similar calving dates. Cows within each block were assigned to one of three isonitrogenous, isoenergetic, and isolipidic supplements based on either whole flaxseed (FLA), Megalac (MEG) or micronized soybeans (SOY). The diets were fed from calving to Day 50 of pregnancy for pregnant cows, or 120 day postpartum for those not diagnosed pregnant after AI. Detailed measurements of PGFM and follicle dynamics were only made on four cows for FLA and five cows for both MEG and SOY. The response in PGFM concentration following the oxytocin challenge administered around Week 11 of lactation was similar over time among treatments. Plasma progesterone concentrations from Days 17 to 21 of the estrous cycle starting around Week 9 of lactation and determined on a subsample of cows (n=for FLA and n=5 for both MEG and SOY) were higher for cows fed FLA than for those fed SOY (P=0.04) or MEG (P=0.06). Conception rates were similar among treatments. Total embryo mortality was lower (P=0.07) for cows fed FLA (0%) compared to those fed either MEG (15.4%) or SOY (8.0%). The mean size of the CL measured during a complete estrous cycle from Week 9 of lactation was smaller for cows fed SOY (16.3 mm) compared to those fed either FLA (19.1 mm) or MEG (18.3 mm). We inferred that pregnancy losses could be reduced by feeding whole flaxseed as a result of its effects on different factors such as modulation in concentration of progesterone and size of the CL.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to estimate the metabolisable energy (ME) and net energy (NE) of rice straw and wheat straw for beef cattle. In each experiment, 16 Wandong bulls (Chinese indigenous yellow cattle) were assigned to 4 dietary treatments in a completely randomised design. Four dietary treatments included one corn silage-concentrate basal diet and three test diets in which the basal diet was partly substituted by rice straw (Exp. 1) or wheat straw (Exp. 2) at 100, 300 and 600 g/kg. Total collection of faeces and urine was conducted for 5 consecutive days after a 2-week adaption period, followed by a 4-d period where gas exchange measurements were measured by an open-circuit respiratory cage. Linear regression equations of rice straw- or wheat straw-associated ME and NE contribution in test diets against rice straw or wheat straw substitution amount were developed to predict the ME and NE values of rice straw and wheat straw. These regression equations resulted in ME and NE values (dry matter basis) of 6.76 and 3.42 MJ/kg for rice straw and 6.43 and 3.28 MJ/kg for wheat straw, respectively. The NE and ME requirement for maintenance of Wandong cattle fed a straw-based diet were 357 and 562 kJ·kg?0.75·d?1, respectively. The regression-derived ME and NE have lower standard errors and coefficients of variation than those estimated by any single substitution ratio. Our study found that the regression method based on multiple point substitution is more reliable than the substitution method for energy evaluation of feedstuffs for beef cattle.  相似文献

Nitrogen (N) leached into groundwater from urine patches of cattle grazing in situ is an environmental problem in pasture-based dairy industries. One potential mitigation is to breed cattle for lower urinary nitrogen (UN) excretion. Urinary nitrogen is difficult to measure, while milk urea nitrogen concentration (MUN) is relatively easy to measure. For animals fed diets of differing N content in confinement, MUN is moderately heritable and is positively related to UN. However, there is little information on the heritability of MUN, and its relationship with other traits such as milk yield and composition, for animals grazing fresh pasture. Milk urea nitrogen concentration data together with milk yield, fat, protein and lactose composition and somatic cell count was collected from 133 624 Holstein-Friesian (HF), Jersey (J) and HF×J (XBd) cows fed predominantly pasture over three full lactations and one part lactation. Mean MUN was 14.0; and 14.4, 13.2 and 13.9 mg/dl for HF, J and XBd cows, respectively. Estimates of heritability of MUN were 0.22 using a repeatability model that fitted year-of-lactation by month-of-lactation by cow-age with days-in-milk within month-of-lactation and cow-age, and 0.28 using a test-day model analysis with Gibbs sampling methods. Sire breeding values (BVs) ranged from −2.8 to +3.2 indicating that MUN could be changed by selection. The genetic correlation between MUN and percent true protein in milk was −0.22; −0.29 for J cows and −0.16 for HF cows. Should the relationship between MUN and UN observed in dietary manipulation studies hold similarly when MUN is manipulated by genetic selection, UN excretion could be reduced by 6.6 kg/cow per year in one generation of selection using sires with low MUN BVs. Although J cows had lower MUN than HF, total herd UN excretion may be similar for the same fixed feed supply because more J cows are required to utilise the available feed. The close relationship between blood plasma urea N concentration and MUN may enable early selection of bulls to breed progeny that excrete less UN.  相似文献
