Biological monitoring of exposure to ambient environmental lead and cadmium was performed using feathers of 26 species of birds native to Western Uttar Pradesh in Northern India. The rationale of this study was to address three questions. First, is there any avian species that can be treated as a suitable bioindicator of lead or cadmium present in the environment? Second, do the birds selectively accumulate lead and cadmium in their feathers and exhibit interspecies variation? Third, is there any threat to endangered species of this region from metal pollution? Average concentration of lead in the feathers of selected birds ranged from 3.40 µg/g in parrot to 301.6 µg/g in golden pheasant, whereas cadmium concentration was higher ranging from 40.20 µg/g in red crow to 450 µg/g in blue macaw. A comparison of results made through ANOVA revealed a significant difference in the concentration of lead (df = 25; F = 3965.54) and cadmium (df = 25; F = 8537.27) in their feathers. We hypothesize that feathers of synanthropic birds may be treated as suitable noninvasive tool to monitor the ambient environmental contamination by lead and cadmium. Their accumulation in endangered birds may lead to population decline causing serious ecological disturbances in the region.  相似文献

Trace metals are chemical pollutants of prime concern nowadays given their implication in several human diseases and their noxious effects on wildlife. Previous studies demonstrated their negative (e.g. lead, cadmium) or positive (e.g. zinc) effects on body condition, immunity and reproductive success in birds. Because of their effects on bird condition, trace metals are likely to influence the production of condition‐dependent plumage colours, that may be used in mate choice. In the feral pigeon Columba livia, we investigated iridescent colouration in response to lead and zinc experimental (i.e. metal supplementation in standardized conditions) and natural exposure (i.e. metal concentrations in feathers of wild urban pigeons), and melanic feather colouration in response to experimental lead and zinc exposure. Both studies (i.e. experimental and correlative) consistently showed that lead exposure decreased iridescent neck feather brightness independently of colour morph. Moreover, lead, when provided alone, decreased melanic feather reflectance in the middle wavelengths while zinc supplementation increased melanic feather reflectance in the violet‐wavelength. In conclusion, our study suggests that the colouration of iridescent and melanic feathers depends on the exposure to pollutants. Whether trace metal exposure affected the ability of birds to produce melanin pigments, to grow the microstructural feather elements required for maximum colour display, or to cope with bacteria that degrade feather microstuctures remains unclear. Future studies should investigate whether these metal‐induced modifications of plumage colouration affect behaviours involved in sexual selection.  相似文献

Trace metals produced by anthropogenic activities are of major importance in urban areas and might constitute a new evolutionary force selecting for the ability to cope with their deleterious effects. Interestingly, melanin pigments are known to bind metal ions, thereby potentially sequestering them in inert body parts such as coat and feathers, and facilitating body detoxification. Thus, a more melanic plumage or coat coloration could bring a selective advantage for animals living in polluted areas. We tested this hypothesis by investigating the link between melanin-based coloration and zinc and lead concentrations in feathers of urban feral pigeons, both at capture time and after one year of captivity in standardized conditions. Results show that differently coloured pigeons had similar metal concentrations at capture time. Metal concentrations strongly decreased after one year in standardized conditions, and more melanic pigeons had higher concentrations of zinc (but not lead) in their feathers. This suggests that more melanic pigeons have a higher ability to store some metals in their feathers compared with their paler counterparts, which could explain their higher success in urbanized areas. Overall, this work suggests that trace metal pollution may exert new selective forces favouring more melanic phenotypes in polluted environments.  相似文献

Melanin is the main pigment in animal coloration and considerable variation in the concentrations of the two melanin forms (pheo- and eumlanin) in pigmented tissues exists among populations and individuals. Melanin-based coloration is receiving increasing attention particularly in socio-sexual communication contexts because the melanocortin system has been hypothesized to provide a mechanistic basis for covariation between coloration and fitness traits. However, with few notable exceptions, little detailed information is available on inter-individual and inter-population variation in melanin pigmentation and on its environmental, genetic and ontogenetic components. Here, we investigate melanin-based coloration in an Italian population of a passerine bird, the barn swallow (Hirundo rustica rustica), its sex- and age-related variation, and heritability. The concentrations of eu- and pheomelanin in the throat (brown) and belly (white-to-brownish) feathers differed between sexes but not according to age. The relative concentration of either melanin (Pheo:Eu) differed between sexes in throat but not in belly feathers, and the concentrations in males compared to females were larger in belly than in throat feathers. There were weak correlations between the concentrations of melanins within as well as among plumage regions. Coloration of belly feathers was predicted by the concentration of both melanins whereas coloration of throat feathers was only predicted by pheomelanin in females. In addition, Pheo:Eu predicted coloration of throat feathers in females and that of belly feathers in males. Finally, we found high heritability of color of throat feathers. Melanization was found to differ from that recorded in Hirundo rustica rustica from Scotland or from H. r. erythrogaster from North America. Hence, present results show that pigmentation strategies vary in a complex manner according to sex and plumage region, and also among geographical populations, potentially reflecting adaptation to different natural and sexual selection regimes, and that some coloration components seem to be highly heritable.  相似文献

Plasma osmolality was found to be the most sensitive blood parameter, affected before other parameters changed.3. Cadmium appears to be more toxic to O. aureus than lead, having an adverse effect on blood parameters earlier than lead.4. 1. The concentrations of zinc in the pyloric caeca and body wall were c. 10-fold greater than lead and nickel and c. 100-fold greater than cadmium and silver.2. The concentration of metal in the pyloric caeca to that in the body wall was equal or significantly greater for cadmium, equal or significantly less for silver and zinc, and significantly less for lead and nickel.3. The profiles of the metal concentrations in the organs were site specific, but the concentrations in the pyloric caeca and body wall were usually greater in the populations in the Bay than those in the Gulf of Mexico.4. Environmental metal pollution is one of the major problems faced by humankind. This type of pollution affects aquatic systems (estuaries, coastal lagoons, etc.), which are very dynamic systems, therefore making the study of the effects on the organisms that inhabit them an essential issue. In this study, the capacity of metal regulation by decapod crustacean Penaeus vannamei juveniles was determined. The effects of zinc, lead, and cadmium were tested individually and as a metal mixture exposure to determine possible synergism. The results showed that juvenile shrimps were capable of regulating zinc and lead, whereas cadmium was accumulated without any excretion, at least within the concentrations studied. It was also proved that under the estuarine conditions tested here, P. vannamei juveniles showed capacity to act as a bioindicator for cadmium.  相似文献

In Guiyu, an electronic waste recycling site near Shantou, Guangdong province, China, primitive ways of e-waste processing have caused severe cadmium and lead pollution to the local residents. However, the possible effects of cadmium or lead pollution to genomic integrity of the local residents have not been investigated. We examined the possible relationship between cadmium and lead concentrations in placenta and placental telomere length in Guiyu and compared the data with that of a non-polluted town. Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry and real-time PCR were used to determine placental cadmium and lead concentrations, and placental telomere length. We found that placental cadmium concentration was negatively correlated with placental telomere length (r = −0.138, p = 0.013). We also found that placental cadmium concentration of 0.0294 µg/g might be a critical point at which attrition of placental telomere commenced. No significant correlation between placental lead concentration and placental telomere length was detected (r = 0.027, p = 0.639). Our data suggest that exposure to cadmium pollution during pregnancy may be a risk factor for shortened placental telomere length that is known to be related to cancer development and aging. Furthermore, grave consequence on the offspring from pregnancies in e-waste polluted area is indicated.  相似文献

Seabirds are top predators of the marine environment that accumulate contaminants over a long life-span. Chronic exposure to pollutants is thought to compromise survival rate and long-term reproductive outputs in these long-lived organisms, thus inducing population decline. However, the demographic consequences of contaminant exposure are largely theoretical because of the dearth of long-term datasets. This study aims to test whether adult survival rate, return to the colony and long-term breeding performance were related to blood mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), by using a capture–mark–recapture dataset on the vulnerable wandering albatross Diomedea exulans. We did not find evidence for any effect of contaminants on adult survival probability. However, blood Hg and POPs negatively impacted long-term breeding probability, hatching and fledging probabilities. The proximate mechanisms underlying these deleterious effects are likely multifaceted, through physiological perturbations and interactions with reproductive costs. Using matrix population models, we projected a demographic decline in response to an increase in Hg or POPs concentrations. This decline in population growth rate could be exacerbated by other anthropogenic perturbations, such as climate change, disease and fishery bycatch. This study gives a new dimension to the overall picture of environmental threats to wildlife populations.  相似文献

The exact relationship between disease incidence in aquatic organisms and environmental pollution is not well defined. A number of mechanisms by which aquatic pollutants may act to increase disease incidence in fish have been speculated, many suggesting immunosuppression as a link in the etiology of disease among fishes in highly contaminated areas. This article will review the effects of metal pollutants on the immune responses of fish by examining in vitro and in vivo laboratory studies carried out since 1980. It will also describe how those alterations may be responsible for pollution-associated diseases in directly exposed fish. While a large number of environmental contaminants represent aquatic pollutants of concern (e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated organics, and pesticides), heavy metals were selected as the pollutants for this review because of their: (a) prevalence in polluted aquatic environments; (b) immunotoxic potential in mammalian systems; (c) ability to induce tumors in exposed rodents; and (d) their overall toxicity in a variety of species. It can be concluded that a number of heavy metal pollutants shown to be immunotoxic in mammalian systems, including cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, manganese, nickel, and zic, also alter immunoregulatory functions in a variety of fish species. These alterations may ultimately lead to increased host susceptibility to infectious and malignant diseases in fish inhabiting heavy metal-contaminated waters.  相似文献

Abstract: Mercury (Hg) contamination is believed to be one of the most significant pollution hazards to wildlife in the southeastern United States, yet comprehensive studies of Hg contamination of piscivorous raptors are rare in this region. We analyzed total Hg (THg) concentration in tissues of 39 osprey (Pandion haliaetus) primarily from coastal counties of South Carolina, USA, to describe tissue distribution of Hg and to determine whether age or sex influenced Hg accumulation. To determine whether Hg poses health risks to osprey breeding in this region, we also measured selenium in all tissues and the percentage of THg that was methylated in a subset of individuals. Osprey with adult plumage tended to have higher and more variable Hg concentrations in their tissues than younger birds. Whereas highest concentrations of Hg were found in liver and kidney of older birds, chicks had highest concentrations in keratinized tissues. Mercury concentrations were correlated between feathers and soft tissues, but talon concentrations of Hg were better correlated with organs than to feathers in most cases. Contrary to previous studies on birds, we found no relationship between Hg concentration in primary feathers and the sequence in which the feather was molted. We attribute this observation to the irregular and protracted molting pattern of osprey. Also contrary to other studies, feather concentrations of Hg were considerably lower than concentrations in liver and kidney. Osprey with high concentrations of Hg in their livers and kidneys accumulated as much as 99% of it as Hg(II), suggesting that demethylation and sequestration of Hg(II) may be even more critical to mitigating adverse effects than it is for other birds that eliminate most of their Hg burden in feathers. In addition, selenium was co-sequestered with Hg in the liver and kidneys and may further mitigate any adverse effects. Based on these findings, we suggest that most osprey in this region are not currently at risk of Hg toxicosis, but recommend that additional ecotoxicological studies be performed to monitor risk to osprey in this coastal region facing heavy development. We also suggest that concentrations of Hg in talon and claw may serve as important indicators of previous exposure and provide useful information for natural resource managers seeking to assess health risks to birds.  相似文献

The increase in length of Pelvetia canaliculata (L.) Dec. et Thur., Fucus spiralis L., F. vesiculosus L., F. serratus L., and Ascophyllym nodosum (L.) Le Jolis was measured in various concentrations of lead, cadmium, and mercury during a period of 9–10 days. Concentration ranges of the three metals were 45 2600 μg 1, 1.5 1040 μg 1 and 0.9 1250 μg 1, respectively.Significant reductions of growth rate compared with the controls were observed at ? 810 μg 1 of lead, ? 450 μg/l of cadmium, and ? 10 μg/l of mercury, and regressions of growth reduction on log concentration were indicated.Growth was significantly enhanced in Pelvetia canaliculata and Ascophyllum nodosum when exposed to cadmium, and in this case there was a significant regression of growth iincrease on log concentration. The growth of Pelvetia canaliculata was also enhanced at all concentrations of lead.  相似文献

The aim of this investigation was to study the effects of lead and cadmium pollutants from road traffic on fine roots and mycorrhiza and their accumulation in soil. The effects of salt and phosphorus, calcium and pH were furthermore included in the study. Soil sampling was carried out in a Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karsten stand along the European road E18 in the neighbourhood of Västerås. Cylindrical soil samples were taken along two parallel lines at a distance of 20 and 200 m from the about 10 m open area on both sides of the road. There were more root tips per soil core in the FH-horizon 200 m from the road than near the road. The amount of fine roots (dry weight and length) was furthermore higher in the FH-layer in the forest than adjacent to the road. The estimated pH was higher in the FH- and mineral soil horizon near the road than in the forest. The lead concentration was highest in the FH-layer near the road, in spite of the high pH and calcium concentration in the soil. The lead and cadmium concentrations in dead fine-roots were higher close to the road than in the forest. In relation to lead the related cadmium concentration in the soil was very low.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Mit standardisierten Habicht-Mauserfedern läßt sich die Schwermetallbelastung von Landschaftsausschnitten repräsentativ erfassen, wie der Vergleich mit auf physikalisch-technischem Weg ermittelten Depositionsraten aus dem gleichen Untersuchungsgebiet bestätigt. Zwischen den Cadmium-, Blei- und Kupfergehalten in standardisierten Habicht-Mauserfedern und den gemessenen Depositionsraten dieser Elemente besteht eine signifikante Korrelation. Die einzelnen Handschwingen zeigten unterschiedlich hohe Cadmium-, Blei- und Kupfergehalte, abhängig von ihrer Stellung im Flügel. Auch Federfahnen wiesen eine charakteristische Cadmium- und Bleiverteilung auf. Die exogene Auflagerung von Schwermetallen aus der Atmosphäre auf/in die Federfahnen wird diskutiert.
Heavy metals in Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) feathers from differently polluted areas
Summary Standardized moulted feathers of Goshawks are used as biomonitors to indicate heavy metal pollution of areas. There is a strong correlation between the cadmium, lead and copper content of this feathers and the wet deposition rate, measured by wet deposition samplers. The distribution of lead, cadmium and copper in different primaries and in other feathers are shown. The exogenous deposition of this heavy metals from the atmosphere on/into the feather vanes are discussed.

Thyroid hormones are essential for body homeostasis. The scientific literature contains restricted proofs for effects of environmental chemical factors on thyroid function. The present study aimed at evaluating the relationship between toxicological parameters and concentration of thyrotropic hormone in persons occupationally exposed to lead, cadmium and arsenic. The studies were conducted on 102 consecutive workers occupationally exposed to lead, cadmium and arsenic (mean age 45.08 ± 9.87 years). The estimated parameters characterizing occupational exposure to metals included blood cadmium concentration (Cd-B), blood lead concentration (Pb-B), blood zinc protoporphyrin concentration (ZnPP) and urine arsenic concentration (As-U). Thyroid function was evaluated using the parameter employed in screening studies, the blood thyrotropic hormone concentration (TSH). No differences were disclosed in mean values of toxicological parameters between the subgroup of persons occupationally exposed to lead, cadmium and arsenic with TSH in and out of the accepted normal values. Logistic regression demonstrated that higher blood total bilirubin concentrations (ORu = 4.101; p = 0.025) and higher Cd-B (ORu = 1.532; p = 0.027) represented independent risk factors of abnormal values of TSH in this group. In conclusion, in the group of workers exposed to lead, cadmium and arsenic, higher blood cadmium concentration seems to augment the risk of abnormal hormonal thyroid function.  相似文献

The monitoring of different types of pollutants that are released into the environment and that present risks for both humans and wildlife has become increasingly important. In this study, we examined whether feathers of predatory birds can be used as a non-destructive biomonitor of organic pollutants. We demonstrate that polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are measurable in one single tail feather of common buzzards (Buteo buteo) and that levels in this feather and internal tissues are significantly related to each other (0.35 < r < 0.76 for all 43 buzzards; 0.46 < r < 0.84 when excluding 17 starved birds). Our findings provide the first indication that feathers of predatory birds could be useful in non-destructive biomonitoring of organic pollutants, although further validation may be necessary.  相似文献

通过作物盆栽模拟试验(砂壤质褐土、pH值8.2)揭示:土壤中分别施入镉(CdCl2)、铅[Pb(CH3COO)2]或锌(ZnSO4)其影响表现为,植物各器官镉的含量超过对照植物的数倍至500倍。土壤镉浓度<5ppm和<10ppm分别造成某些蔬菜和水稻的污染。铅主要积累在植物根部,土壤铅污染对作物的影响较小。锌主要积累在植物叶片和根部,对水稻产生生长抑制的土壤锌浓度临界值不大于200ppm,此浓度对旱作无影响。土壤中同时施入镉和铅,植物对镉的吸收增加。而土壤中镉的增加却减少了植物体内铅的含量。土壤中由于镉、锌或铅、锌相互作用的结果,水稻对它们的吸收都有增加。在旱地土壤锌浓度的增高,降低了植物对镉、铅的吸收。镉、铅、锌同时施入土壤由于相互作用的结果,除锌之外,植物对镉、铅的吸收有明显下降。评价土壤重金属污染,不仅要看它们的含量及其存在形态,而且要分析它们之间的相互作用(促进或拮抗)特点。  相似文献

In September 2014, a pod of seven sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) was stranded along the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy. Concentrations of 20 essential and non-essential trace elements were quantified in the brain, muscle, liver and kidneys of three female sperm whales, which died in this event.The essential elements copper, iron, manganese and zinc showed low ranges of variability, suggesting a homeostatic physiological control, while selenium concentrations were associated with age. Molybdenum, nickel and chromium showed low ranges of concentrations and no evidence of preferential accumulation in selected organs. Very low concentrations of the non-essential elements cadmium, lead, tin and vanadium were detected in all tissues, suggesting a minor impact of these pollutants on the sperm whale populations of the Mediterranean Sea. Aluminum was revealed to have relatively high concentrations, together with a high variability between tissues and individuals, reaching the highest values in the kidneys and muscle of the oldest female, which was pregnant; the rare earth elements – lanthanum and cerium – were also detected in the kidneys of this female, indicating that pregnancy probably influenced metal concentrations in body tissues.  相似文献

The degree of heavy metal (Hg, Cr, Cd, and Pb) pollution in honeybees (Apis mellifera) was investigated in several sampling sites around central Italy including both polluted and wildlife areas. The honeybee readily inhabits all environmental compartments, such as soil, vegetation, air, and water, and actively forages the area around the hive. Therefore, if it functions in a polluted environment, plant products used by bees may also be contaminated, and as a result, also a part of these pollutants will accumulate in the organism. The bees, foragers in particular, are good biological indicators that quickly detect the chemical impairment of the environment by the high mortality and the presence of pollutants in their body or in beehive products. The experiment was carried out using 24 colonies of honeybees bred in hives dislocated whether within urban areas or in wide countryside areas. Metals were analyzed on the foragers during all spring and summer seasons, when the bees were active. Results showed no presence of mercury in all samples analyzed, but honeybees accumulated several amounts of lead, chromium, and cadmium. Pb reported a statistically significant difference among the stations located in urban areas and those in the natural reserves, showing the highest values in honeybees collected from hives located in Ciampino area (Rome), next to the airport. The mean value for this sampling station was 0.52 mg kg−1, and July and September were characterized by the highest concentrations of Pb. Cd also showed statistically significant differences among areas, while for Cr no statistically significant differences were found.  相似文献
