Hyperthermophilic Archaea and Bacteria with optimal growth temperatures between 80 and 110°C have been isolated from geo- and hydro-thermally heated terrestrial and submarine environments. 16S rRNA sequence comparisons indicate great phylogenetic diversity among the 23 different genera represented. Hyperthermophiles consist of anaerobic and aerobic chemolithoautotrophs and heterotrophs growing at neutral or acidic pH. Their outstanding heat resistance makes them as interesting objects for basic research as for biotechnology in the future. The authors (alphabetical order) are with the Lehrstuhl für Mikrobiologie und Archaeenzentrum, Universität Regensburg, 93053 Regensburg, Germany  相似文献

The human flea Pulex irritans Linnaeus, 1758 (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) is one of the most studied species together with the cat flea Ctenocephalides felis Bouché, 1835, because they have a cosmopolitan distribution and are closely related to humans. The present study aimed to carry out a comparative morphometric and molecular study of two different populations of P. irritans (Spain and Argentina). Accordingly, internal transcribed spacer (ITS)1 and ITS2 of rDNA and the partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and cytochrome b (cytb) mtDNA genes of these taxa were sequenced. Furthermore, the taxonomy, origin, evolution and phylogeny of P. irritans was assessed. The morphometric data obtained did not show significant differences between P. irritans specimens from Spain and Argentina, even when these two populations were collected from different hosts; however, there was a considerable degree of molecular divergence between both populations based on nuclear and mitochondrial markers. Thus, it is proposed that P. irritans, in contrast with other generalist fleas, maintains a certain degree of morphological similarity, at least between Western Palearctic and Neotropical areas. Furthermore, two well defined geographical genetic lineages within the P. irritans species are indicated, suggesting the existence of two cryptic species that could be discriminated by a polymerase chain reaction‐linked restriction fragment length polymorphism.  相似文献

The biodiversity of cyanobacteria is paradoxical since these bacteria vary in cytological characters although are metabolically uniform. Cyanobacterial phylogeny is also paradoxical as the structural genes of rRNA are too conservative for a large phylum. On the paradoxical evolutionary tree, neighbors have strongly contrasting phenotypes, while objects with similar phenotypes demonstrate a heterological structure of 16S rDNA. The systematics of cyanobacteria is paradoxical, too, since it is logically contradictory: on the one hand, phylum BX Cyanobacteria generally is separated on molecular-biological grounds. On the other hand, in accordance with the traditional botanical algorithm used in classification of blue-green algae, this phylum is artificially subdivided into morphological groups (ultrastructural characters are taken into account only in rare cases). A unique trait of the taxonomy of cyanobacteria (with rare exceptions, e.g., Cyanobacterium stanieri) is its general nonusage of the category of species. The species epithet is replaced by a stain index (e.g., Anabaena PCC 7122).  相似文献

Heliozoa are ubiquitous, unicellular phagotrophs with slender radiating axopodia for trapping prey. We sequenced 18S rRNA genes from 35 cultured centrohelid heliozoa (18 studied by electron microscopy) and 28 environmental libraries (18 freshwater, 10 marine), yielding 97 new sequences, this exceeding described species. Phylogenetic analyses show two major groups and that ancestral centrohelids probably had inner plate-like tangential and distinct outer radial silica scales, the latter diverging early into contrasting scale types seen in extant Pterocystis/Choanocystis and Acanthocystis/Raphidiophryidae. Scales were lost at least thrice. Pterocystis is paraphyletic, as was the classical family Acanthocystidae; Heterophrys was polyphyletic. Using scale morphology and rRNA sequences, we establish new families Pterocystidae (Pterocystis, Raineriophrys, Chlamydaster), Marophryidae (type Marophrys (Heterophrys) marina gen. et comb. nov.) and Choanocystidae, new suborders Pterocystina (Pterocystidae, Choanocystidae, Heterophryidae) and Acanthocystina (Acanthocystidae, Raphidiophryidae, Marophryidae), and ten new Pterocystis, Acanthocystis and Choanocystis species. Most clades are exclusively freshwater or exclusively marine; evolutionary transitions between these habitats have been rare.  相似文献

The fungal kingdom comprises a hyperdiverse clade of heterotrophic eukaryotes characterized by the presence of a chitinous cell wall, the loss of phagotrophic capabilities and cell organizations that range from completely unicellular monopolar organisms to highly complex syncitial filaments that may form macroscopic structures. Fungi emerged as a ‘Third Kingdom’, embracing organisms that were outside the classical dichotomy of animals versus vegetals. The taxonomy of this group has a turbulent history that is only now starting to be settled with the advent of genomics and phylogenomics. We here review the current status of the phylogeny and taxonomy of fungi, providing an overview of the main defined groups. Based on current knowledge, nine phylum‐level clades can be defined: Opisthosporidia, Chytridiomycota, Neocallimastigomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Zoopagomycota, Mucoromycota, Glomeromycota, Basidiomycota and Ascomycota. For each group, we discuss their main traits and their diversity, focusing on the evolutionary relationships among the main fungal clades. We also explore the diversity and phylogeny of several groups of uncertain affinities and the main phylogenetic and taxonomical controversies and hypotheses in the field.  相似文献

The Hypoxyloideae (Xylariaceae with Nodulisporium-like anamorphs) were evaluated by a morphological and HPLC-based chemotaxonomic survey of more than 2000 specimens and cultures. Conspecificity of recent records with ancient type specimens were established in many cases by HPLC, since their characteristic metabolites may remain stable for over 200 years. Most constitute novel natural products that were identified in the course of concurrent "mycochemical" studies. A comparison of HPLC profiles considering relationships within the Hypoxyloideae as inferred from the biogenesis of these pigments agreed fairly with concurrent molecular phylogenetic studies, based on sequences of actin, beta-tubulin, and 5.8S/ITS nrDNA genes. Anamorphic morphology and secondary metabolism of cultures agreed well at generic level and above. A combination of chemical and morphological traits is favored over PCR-based approaches for species discrimination, if only relatively few taxa of these diverse genera have been sequenced. An overview on the chemical structures and biological activities of the characteristic metabolites is provided, their ecological importance is discussed, and the utility of chemotaxonomy to support and predict phylogenetic relationships in the Hypoxyloidae is demonstrated. A polythetic approach is most useful to elucidate the phylogeny of the Xylariaceae. Chemotaxonomy to assess fungal biodiversity has considerable utility.  相似文献

Geosiphon pyriformis(Kütz.) v. Wettstein is the only known example of a fungus living in endocytobiotic association with a cyanobacterium. The close phylogenetic relationship of Geosiphonwith some arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and the phylogenetic position of Geosiphonare shown in detail. Comprehensive small subunit (SSU) rRNA sequence analyses allow the erection of a new, molecular phylogeny-based taxonomic system for the AMF, including Geosiphon (Geosiphonaceae). Within the recently described phylum Glomeromycota (with one class, Glomeromycetes), a system including four orders was proposed. The erection of several new families will also be necessary. Evolutionary implications are discussed, referring to different possibilities of the influence of AMF on the colonization of the terrestrial habitat by plants.  相似文献

Giant deer or megacerines (tribe Megacerini, family Cervidae, order Artiodactyla) dwelt in Eurasia from the Late Miocene to Holocene and in Africa in the Late Pleistocene. Based on comparative morphological data and morphofunctional analysis, morphogenetic and ecogenetic trends in this group are improved. Classification, taxonomy, phylogeny, and geographical and stratigraphical ranges of megacerines are revised.  相似文献

This contribution provides new insights in the phylogeny and taxonomy of the nematode genus Sectonema with an integrative approach. A brief historical outline of the matter is presented. Then, the morphological pattern of the genus is revised and illustrated, the nature of its stomatal protruding structure, either a reduced odontostyle or a mural tooth, being its most relevant diagnostic feature. The existence of cilia‐ or seta‐like structures in the perioral area and/or at the anterior part of cheilostom of some species is evidenced by SEM observations for the first time. Available molecular data (D2–D3 LSU‐rRNA gene) are analysed, including two new sequences of S. septentrionale from Spain. The monophyly of the genus is confirmed, and two species groups with geographical projection are tentatively identified. A close relationship with Metaporcelaimus is also demonstrated as both taxa constitute a highly supported clade. A likely polyphyly of the family Aporcelaimidae is once more demonstrated. Finally, an updated taxonomy of the genus is proposed, including revised diagnosis, list of species, identification key and a compendium of their main morphometrics.  相似文献

The beginning of specialization characterizing the robust australopithecines is manifested in almost every aspect of the masticatory system of Australopithecus africanus. Of particular significance is the presence of two massive bony columns on both sides of the nasal aperture that support the anterior portion of the palate. These columns--the anterior pillars--are viewed as a structural response to the greater occlusal load stemming from the beginning stages of molarization of the premolars and exerted on the more anterior part of the dental arcade. In A. africanus the molarization process is, indeed, just in its initial phase, but the still considerable protrusion of the palate relative to the more peripheral facial frame increases the need for pillars. The anterior pillars and the advancement of the inferior part of the infraorbital plate (the origin of the masseter) play a major role in molding the facial topography of A. africanus. The absence of the pillars and the common position of the masseteric origin lead us to define the face of A. afarensis as the most primitive of the australopithecines and allow us to discriminate between its facial morphology and that of A. africanus. The presence of anterior pillars in the face of the latter places it clearly in the robust australopithecine clade.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of the Erysiphe with uncinuloid ascoma appendages (Erysiphe section Uncinula, Erysiphales, Ascomycota) on Carpinus spp. was done using sequences of the rDNA ITS regions and the D1/D2 domains of the 28S rDNA. These results, combined with morphological data, revealed a complex consisting of several distinct taxa. These included the already described Erysiphe carpinicola on C. japonica distinguishable from the Erysiphe sp. on C. betulus and C. tschonoskii as well as the one on C. laxiflora. Thus, it was shown that Oidium carpini, described from Europe on Carpinus betulus, the powdery mildew with uncinula-like ascomata, recently found in Europe on this host, as well as an Erysiphe on C. tschonoskii in Japan, described previously as E. carpinicola, all belong to a single new species, named E. arcuata in this paper. As the powdery mildew on C. laxiflora was also distinct from other known species, it is named E. carpini-laxiflorae in this paper. The already described E. pseudocarpinicola and Erysiphe sp. on Carpinus cordata are two additional taxa, which are morphologically and genetically distinguished from the other species of Erysiphe sect. Uncinula on Carpinus spp.  相似文献

Carrasco, P.A., Mattoni, C.I., Leynaud, G.C. & Scrocchi, G.J. (2012). Morphology, phylogeny and taxonomy of South American bothropoid pitvipers (Serpentes, Viperidae). —Zoologica Scripta, 41, 109–124. South American bothropoids comprise a monophyletic and greatly diverse group of pitvipers that were initially included in the genus Bothrops and later assigned to five genera. Until recently, most phylogenetic analyses of bothropoids used exclusively mitochondrial DNA sequences, whereas few of them have included morphological traits. Moreover, the systematic affinities of some species remain unclear. In this study, we performed a parsimony analysis of morphological data obtained from the examination of 111 characters related to lepidosis, colour pattern, osteology, and hemipenial morphology of 35 of the 48 species that compose the bothropoid group. The morphological data analysed contain novel information about several species, including the incertae sedis. Morphology was analysed separately and combined with 2393 molecular characters obtained from published sequences of four mitochondrial genes. Five characters of the ecology were also included. A sensitivity analysis was performed using different weighting criteria for the characters. The congruence among different sources of evidence was evaluated through partitioned and total evidence analyses, the analyses of reduced datasets and the use of incongruence length difference test. With few exceptions, results showed groups of species similar to those obtained in previous studies; however, incongruences between morphological and molecular characters, and within the molecular partition, were revealed. This conflict affects the relationship between particular groups of species, leading to alternative phylogenetic hypotheses for bothropoids: hierarchical radiation or two major lineages within the group. The results also showed that Bothrops sensu stricto is paraphyletic. We discuss previous taxonomic approaches and, considering both phylogenetic hypotheses, we propose an arrangement that rectifies the paraphyly of Bothrops: maintaining Bothrocophias, assigning Bothrops andianus to this genus; and recognising the sister clade as Bothrops, synonymising Bothriopsis, Bothropoides and Rhinocerophis.  相似文献

A plethora of unionid names was established in the nineteenth century by the “Nouvelle Ecole”. Although naiad morphological plasticity is well documented, the currently recognized fauna, with 17 species and subspecies included in the French checklist for the Unio genus, is still based upon morphological characters only. Insights have been provided from molecular data elsewhere in Europe and North Africa, but the French fauna remains unstudied. We present a molecular phylogeny of the Unio genus in France based on COI, 16S and 28S genes; taking up all available data in Europe plus 273 specimens collected in all main French drainages. The results show that there are either three valid species in France, with U. pictorum and U. mancus synonymized, or five, with the subspecies U. crassus courtillieri elevated to species level. Subspecies were generally not recovered, which questions the evolutionary units tacitly implied by subspecific names. Although sampling topotypes is the most reliable way to evaluate the status of a nominal subspecies, major human-induced changes in aquatic hydrosystems challenge the method. Nevertheless, operational taxonomy has to rely on ground-truthed data and we propose to reduce the actual number of valid taxa in France to the seven observed operational taxonomic units.  相似文献

All species and higher taxa of Recent Erinaceidae are diagnosed, the character-states most useful in classification are tabulated and the most probable phylogenies presented. Four African species are included in the genus Atelerix. The desert-adapted Paraechinus is believed to be more closely related to Atelerix than to the convergent Hemiechinus. The ranges of all species are mapped, with emphasis upon areas of parapatry and sympatry. Marginal localities are listed if they are not derived from previously published maps. All nominal fossil species that have been allocated to Recent genera are listed. Ecological data relevant to the interpretations of species boundaries, e.g. relating to diet and habitat, are summarized, and the factors likely to determine the species boundaries are reviewed.  相似文献
