Meiosis was examined in PMC of 138 plants of the outbreeder Triticum speltoides (=Aegilops speltoides) and 175 plants of the closely related T. longissimum (= Ae. longissima), which is a selfer. Nine of the T. speltoides plants, originating fra two of the five Israeli populations under study, contained B chromosomes in addition to the normal complements (2n = 14). No supernumerary chromosomes were found in T. longissimum. — Plants were found carrying 1, 2 or 3 B chromosomes, which seem to be stable among PMC. Their size is 2/3 of the average length of the regular chromosomes, but otherwise they are similar in appearance. Pairing between Bs is common as bivalents and trivalents, but whether this association is ehiasmatic is not clear. There is a slight reduction in chiasma frequency of the regular complement in B-carriers compared to other plants from the same population. — The only other species in the wheat group reported to have B chromosomes in natural populations is also an outbreeder, namely T. tripsacoides (=Ae. mutica). The connection between outbreeding and B chromosomes might be significant.  相似文献

A new computerised technique has been devised for measuring the distribution of chiasmata along diplotene bivalents. The method involves the introduction into the field of view of the microscope, of a fine light spot which can be accurately manipulated along the chromosomes of each bivalent. The data recorded include (a) the positions of the chiasmata along the bivalent in terms of their relative distances from the centromere and (b) the individual bivalent and cellular chiasma frequencies. — The method has been applied to the analysis of chiasma distribution patterns in the two known species of the genus Caledia, C. species nova 1 and C. captiva and in two chromosomal races of the latter. Statistical tests indicate that within bivalents at least 40% of the comparative distribution patterns of chiasmata between races and species are significantly different. Similar comparisons between populations within races reveal only 18% significant differences. — The observed distribution patterns of chiasmata in this genus suggest that chiasma formation is sequential from centromere to telomere. — The variation in the frequency and distribution of chiasmata between races and species suggests that the interference distances between successive chiasmata are, at least partially, independent of chiasma frequency and position. — The interracial and interspecific differences in chromosome structure are correlated with changes in chiasma pattern.  相似文献

Variation of 20 quantitative characters was examined within and among 10 populations of the predominantly outcrossing Phlox drummondii and 4 populations of the predominantly selfing P. cuspidata grown in a greenhouse. Multivariate analysis of variance, considering all characters simultaneously, indicated that there were significant differences among populations in both species while analysis of individual characters demonstrated that there were significant population differences for 19 characters in P. drummondii and 13 characters in P. cuspidata. On average, 16% of the total phenotypic variation in P. drummondii occurred among populations compared to less than 4% of the total variation in P. cuspidata. In addition, P. drummondii exhibited significant differences among families within populations more frequently than P. cuspidata. Most observed variation in both species occurred within families where environmental and genetic sources of variation could not be partitioned. There was a trend for P. drummondii to have higher heritabilities than P. cuspidata for most characters even when assumptions about breeding systems were relaxed. Thus, the outbreeding species exhibited larger genetic differences among populations and among families within populations than the selfing species in the greenhouse environment. These data suggest that P. drummondii has the greater evolutionary potential of the two species and are consistent with the hypothesis that differences in population structure result from differences in the breeding systems of the two species.  相似文献

In the diploid speciesP. prolifera, the evolution of autogamy has resulted in the presence of distinct selfing and outcrossing races. The change in breeding system toward autogamy is associated with a reduction in the size of floral features and a lower pollen production. The outbreeding populations have only been found in Greece, while the selfing populations have colonized much of Europe. The two races appear to be reproductively isolated from one another. —Petrorhagia sect.Kohlrauschia contains four species.P. glumacea is outbreeding and shows unilateral incompatibility with the small-flowered race ofP. prolifera and interfertility with the large-flowered race; althoughP. glumacea is sympatric with the large-flowered race, they do not appear to hybridize in the wild. Amongst the allopatric species, internal breeding barriers are also found. These may take the form of hybrid sterility or seed incompatibility.P. velutina is autogamous and reproductively isolated from all the other species of the section regardless of whether they are sympatric or allopatric. It is suggested that the evolution of autogamy has been an important factor in the spread ofP. velutina, the tetraploidP. nanteuilii, and the small-flowered race ofP. prolifera in Europe.  相似文献

Summary Morphological variability in three Plantago species possessing different mating systems — P. Major, P. coronopus, and P. lanceolata — was analyzed. From each species several populations were analyzed. In comparing the species, it appeared that both the inbreeding P. major and the outbreeding P. lanceolata showed a high degree of morphological differentiation between populations. It was hypothesized that the absence of population differentiation for the species with a mixed mating system, P. coronopus, was caused by high adaptive plasticity. Plasticity is probably the predominant mechanism by which this species copes with different environments. There were considerable differences between populations within each species for their levels of variability and their heritabilities. It appeared that besides the influence of the mating system, selection may diminish morphological variability in the case of strong directional selection, especially in P. major and P. lanceolata.Grassland Species Research Group Publication No. 135  相似文献

Understanding the causes and architecture of genetic differentiation between natural populations is of central importance in evolutionary biology. Crosses between natural populations can result in heterosis if recessive or nearly recessive deleterious mutations have become fixed within populations because of genetic drift. Divergence between populations can also result in outbreeding depression because of genetic incompatibilities. The net fitness consequences of between-population crosses will be a balance between heterosis and outbreeding depression. We estimated the magnitude of heterosis and outbreeding depression in the highly selfing model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, by crossing replicate line pairs from two sets of natural populations (C↔R, B↔S) separated by similar geographic distances (Italy↔Sweden). We examined the contribution of different modes of gene action to overall differences in estimates of lifetime fitness and fitness components using joint scaling tests with parental, reciprocal F1 and F2, and backcross lines. One of these population pairs (C↔R) was previously demonstrated to be locally adapted, but locally maladaptive quantitative trait loci were also found, suggesting a role for genetic drift in shaping adaptive variation. We found markedly different genetic architectures for fitness and fitness components in the two sets of populations. In one (C↔R), there were consistently positive effects of dominance, indicating the masking of recessive or nearly recessive deleterious mutations that had become fixed by genetic drift. The other set (B↔S) exhibited outbreeding depression because of negative dominance effects. Additional studies are needed to explore the molecular genetic basis of heterosis and outbreeding depression, and how their magnitudes vary across environments.  相似文献

Variation in chiasma frequency within and between individuals has been investigated in Schistocerca gregaria and Stethophyma grossum. By taking sequential samples of the same testis in S. gregaria it has been demonstrated that there is considerable variation in chiasma frequency between times, within individuals, and that this variation is not evenly distributed between individuals of the same population. The response and recovery patterns after exposure to successive temperature treatments also indicate a differential sensitivity of individuals within the experimental population. — An analysis of interfollicular variation in chiasma frequency has revealed significant differences between follicles within individuals both in S. gregaria and a Spanish population of S. grossum. A comparable analysis on individuals of S. grossum carrying supernumerary segments shows that the presence of such segments increases the amount of variation between follicles within individuals and also between individuals within the population. — The distribution of cell chiasma frequencies in S. gregaria is normal whereas in Stethophyma cell frequencies approximate to a Poisson distribution. The structurally different supernumerary segments, present in Austrian and Spanish populations of S. grossum, both increase mean chiasma frequency and they modify the between cell variance in different ways — the former interchromosomally and the latter intrachromosomally. — The differences in chiasma frequency between follicles and between times within individuals and the differential reaction to heat shock reflect differences in the pattern of genotype-environment interaction. Similarly it can be argued that the presence of polymorphisms involving supernumerary material may play an equivalent role by increasing the between cell or between bivalent variance within individuals, a unique form of genotype-environment interaction at the endophenotypic level. — Such variation in genotype sensitivity to environmental modification has important adaptive value especially in organisms which are subject to recurrent, often random, changes in their environment.  相似文献

Chiasmata and variability in Lolium and Festuca populations   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0

There are significant differences in mean pollen mother cell chiasma frequencies between populations within Lolium perenne, L. multiflorum and Festuca pratensis. The differences are genotypically controlled. With low chiasma frequencies the chiasmata are distally located. With increasing chiasma frequency the frequency of chiasmata in interstitial segments increases. Shorter lived populations have higher chiasma frequencies than the more perennial. — The higher the chiasma frequency of a population the lower the phenotypic and genetic variance for characters under polygenic control, such as flowering time, and the less effective also is the response to selection for such characters. These observations are interpreted on the premise that high chiasma frequencies are instrumental in the breaking up of supergene sequences in interstitial chromosome segments.  相似文献

The structure, copy number and chromosomal location of arrays of four families of highly repeated sequences have been investigated in representative species of the genus Secale. The four unrelated families, previously characterised in Secale cereale, have repeating units of 480, 610, 630 and 120 base pairs respectively. The following general conclusions can be drawn in addition to detailed knowledge of the sequence content of heterochromatin in each accession studied: (1) Every species is unique in its complement or chromosomal distribution or both of the four highly repeated sequence families. S. montanum and S. cereale accessions studied here show the same complement of repeated sequences, but they differ substantially in the amounts they contain of the 610 and 630 base pair (bp) families, and in the distribution over the chromosomes of the 480 bp family. The structure of the repeating unit is also different in many members of the 480 bp family in S. montanum. — (2) The substantial differences between species in the amounts of the most highly repeated DNA sequences exist in the absence of any such conspicuous differences in most other repeated sequences which were detected as fluorescent bands after restriction enzyme digestion and gel electrophoresis. — (3) Each of the different highly repeated families can exist independently of the other families, though all the families have telomeric sites. Also, in the outbreeding species, heteromorphisms are frequent, and are particularly conspicuous in hybridisation detecting the 480 bp sequence family. — (4) The association of the highly repeated sequences with heterochromatin, discussed in the accompanying paper is generally true for other species in the genus, and the lower amounts of heterochromatin in other Secale species compared to S. cereale are associated with lower amounts of specific families of highly repeated DNA sequences. — (5) Analysis of highly repeated sequence families is likely to provide an easy method of identification of new accessions of Secale.  相似文献

Electrophoretic variation in isozymes coded by 40 loci was examined in two self-pollinating populations, one with white and the other with pink flowering plants, and four outcrossing populations ofClarkia xantiana (Onagraceae) native to California. The study was carried out to test theMoore & Lewis (1965) hypothesis that the pink selfer originated from the sympatric outcrossing population and then gave rise to the white selfer. The hypothesis could be rejected if one or the other selfer was more similar genetically to an allopatric population than to the sympatric one. Both selfers were monomorphic at all loci whereas the outcrossing populations were polymorphic at nearly half of them. The two selfers had the same genes at 32 loci but had different ones at eight loci. The pink selfer was not more similar to the allopatric populations than to the sympatric one, consistent with theMoore & Lewis model. The evidence also supported their proposal that the white selfer originated from the pink one and not independently. The electrophoretic evidence was valuable because it permitted qualitative comparisons (presence versus absence of particular alleles) between the selfer and the several outcrossing populations; such analysis was not previously possible because the latter populations are morphologically and cytologically similar.  相似文献

In rare plants that often occur in small or isolated populations the probability of selfing between close relatives is increased as a consequence of demographic stochasticity. The mode of pollination (selfing, outcrossing) may have considerable effects on seed traits and offspring performance and hence potential viability. Since current efforts aiming at the restoration of floodplain grasslands through the transfer of plant material from species-rich source stands may lead to the establishment of initially small populations consisting of founders from different populations, the present paper experimentally investigated the effects of pollen source and floral types (i.e. chasmogamous (CH) and cleistogamous (CL) flowers) on seed traits and offspring performance in three highly endangered violet species (Viola elatior, V. pumila, V. stagnina) of these grasslands. We estimated inbreeding depression and tested the performance of selfed and outcrossed offspring in two microbial environments, i.e. in soil inoculated with (i) non-sterile substrate from the same species (‘home’-conditions) and (ii) sterilised substrate.Plants produced more CL capsules than CH flowers. Pollinator exclusion had only small effects on CH seed production. CL seeds had a significantly lower mass per seed than CH seeds. This may be related to constraints in allocation or environmental conditions. Seedling growth was reduced in plants grown under ‘home’-conditions as compared to control soils. Under ‘home’-conditions, relative fitness of selfed seedlings of V. stagnina was significantly higher than that of crossed progeny. Our results suggest that high genetic differentiation among populations as a consequence of isolation may result in outbreeding depression, e.g., through biochemical or physiological incompatibilities between genes or the breaking of coadapted gene complexes. In V. stagnina, offspring fitness differed considerably between environments, but in general we found no indications for inbreeding depression in these rare species.  相似文献

Four types of floral breeding systems—(i) chasmogamy, (ii) aerial pseudocleistogamy, (iii) subterranean pseudocleistogamy and (iv) obligate subterranean true cleistogamy—are observed in the populations ofVigna minima inhabiting the Western Ghats (India). Five categories of phenotypes are recognized based on the number and kinds of floral breeding systems found in a given individual. The frequencies of different categories of phenotypes not only show intra- and interpopulation variation, but also fluctuate from generation to generation suggesting differences in the genetic structure of populations. This polymorphism in the breeding system of a single species is unique and may be adaptive. Obligate subterranean true cleistogamy and amphicarpy appear to be adaptations to jungle fires and soil erosion.—The flowers are of the flag-blossom type and insect visitors act as tripping agents. The tripping mechanism together with the polymorphic floral breeding system result in a balanced mixture of selfing and outcrossing. Such a recombination system may enhance the fitness ofV. minima which is essentially a colonizing species.  相似文献

The tertiary relict plant Sinocalycanthus chinensis, endemic to Zhejiang province with small populations and fragmented distribution, is an endangered plant in China. A relatively high species-level genetic diversity and low population-level genetic diversity exist in this species, and large genetic differentiation exists between two main populations with significant geographical isolation. Based on a previous artificial simulation mating test, amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) marker was used in the present study to assess genetic diversity of filial generation colonies generated by different mating modes and to clarify genetic effects of various mating modes. The filial generation colonies generated by natural pollination and by geitonogamy were found to be similar to each other in terms of their relatively low genetic parameters and minimum genetic differentiation. This indicated that under natural conditions, selfing might occur at a higher proportion leading to the low genetic diversity within the population. The degree of genetic diversity of the filial generation colonies generated by outbreeding was highest, followed by inbreeding (xenogamy) and selfing (geitonogamy). Moreover, genetic differentiation between filial generation colonies generated by selfing (geitonogamy) and inbreeding (i.e., xenogamy) was much smaller than that between filial generation colonies generated by selfing and outbreeding. The results indicated that the genetic effect of outbreeding was much more dominant than other mating modes. Therefore, artificially promoting outbreeding between the two isolated geographically populations contributed to the enhancement of genetic diversity in populations in S. chinensis.  相似文献

An analysis is made of the variation among individuals in finite populations of the proportion of their genes which are identical by descent. There are two causes of this variability: variation in pedigree among individuals, and linkage which causes whole blocks of genes to be identical or nonidentical by descent. The variation between and within populations is analyzed in detail for several mating systems: monoecious populations with and without random selfing, and dioecious populations with and without a hierarchical mating structure. Transition matrices for two-locus descent measures are given for each system. Total variability is obtained by integrating these measures over the distribution of map distances over whole chromosomes. Approximate methods are also developed for unlinked loci. Unless populations have a very small effective size (Ne) there is little variation in inbreeding between populations. For unlinked loci, the coefficient of variation in nonidentity within populations approaches about 1/√3Ne for random selfing, 1/√6Ne for monogamous matings and 1/√12Ne for monoecy with selfing excluded or dioecy with random pairing. If there is no association between map distance and initial heterozygosity or effect on quantitative traits, the coefficient of variation in mean heterozygosity over the genome is related to that in nonidentity, and the additional variation in a quantitative trait due to dominant genes equals the product of the square of the initial inbreeding depression and the squared coefficient of variation of nonidentity.  相似文献

The seasonal variations of chiasma frequency and distribution have been studied in the lizard: Podareis sicula. In this species, as in Phyllodactylus (King & Hayman, Chromosoma 69: 131–154, 1978), chiasma frequencies vary following a definite annual cycle, and clearly different trends are shown by interstitial and terminal chiasmata.A comparison between these seasonal chiasma frequency variations and those of environmental temperature shows the existence of a clear correlation between these two parameters. However, this correlation is different in the two types of chiasmata, and may be different within the same type of chiasma depending on the period of the year.A more significant correlation is observed between chiasma cycles and annual variations of the haematic levels of sexual steroid hormones. In particular we observe a highly significant correlation between interstitial chiasma frequencies and testosterone concentration. A less precise correlation between terminal chiasma frequencies and estradiol concentration is also observed. In Podarcis, as in Phyllodactylus, the sperm that will be used for fertilization derive from the spermatocytes showing the highest rate of interstitial chiasmata. This supports the hypothesis that the cyclic variations in interstitial chiasma frequencies represent a mechanism to ensure an adequate level of variability in a given population. The above mentioned correlation between chiasma frequencies and steroia hormone concentrations suggests that the seasonal chiasma cycles are controlled by the same environmental and hormonal factors regulating the spermatogenetic cycle.  相似文献

Pollen limitation negatively impacts endangered and endemic plants with small fragmented populations, such as Sinocalycanthus chinensis, an endangered plant endemic to China. In this study, we analyzed the pollen limitation of the S. chinensis Damingshan (DMS) population in 2006, 2009, and 2010, and crossed plants with mates separated by different distances, both within and between populations. The DMS population exhibited strong pollen limitation in fruit set, seed set, and seeds per fruit in 2006, 2009, and 2010. The average accumulated pollen limitation (for fruit set times seeds per fruit) was 0.510 ± 0.180. Progeny crossed with pollen from intermediate neighboring plants within the same population (separated by 30–50 m from pollen recipients) had the lowest fitness. No optimal outcrossing distance was found within the DMS population. Progeny from crosses with the Shunxiwu (SXW) and Daleishan (DLS) populations performed relatively better, while those from crosses with Qingliangfeng (QLF) and Longxushan (LXS) populations performed worse. Compared with average reproductive success, outbreeding depression was found in progeny from crosses with the LXS and QLF populations. Reproductive success from pure self‐pollination indicated S. chinensis is self‐compatible. Geitonogamous selfing increased reproductive success. Based on geitonogamous selfing, the proportion of selfed offspring was relatively high. These results provide basic references for the conservation of this species.  相似文献

The mean frequency of chiasmata was analysed in 29 males of the grasshopper Eyprepocnemis plorans at three different ages considered representative of the whole adult life in this species. In the factors which could potentially affect the parameter studied—namely age, family, individual and the presence or absence of B chromosomes—significant differences were only observed at the individual level. Aging produces no general effect but interacts strongly with the individuals though the age-induced variations in chiasma frequency are not directional. The fact that the range of chiasma frequency variation found within individuals at different ages is comparable to that existing among individuals indicates that the adaptive role of such variations in natural populations must be taken with caution.  相似文献

Summary An approach for the screening of mit - mutants, the isolation and preliminary classification of a series of such mutants is reported. Loss and retention of 8 mit - and 6 drug r markers in mitDNA was analyzed in populations of rho- clones derived from four yeast strains. The populations studied constitute a representative fraction of the rho- petites formed during growth at 35° C under the influence of mutation tsp-25 which is in common to the four strains. The majority of the rho- clones retained several of the markers studied. Depending on the marker regarded retention frequencies between 15% (oxi3) and 45% (oli1, cob) were observed. Loss of one and retention of the other of a pair of markers was determined in all rho- clones of the four populations. The frequencies of marker separation by rho- deletion thus obtained are assumed to reflect the distance between markers on the mitochondrial genome: the higher the frequency of separation the longer the distance between two markers. Based on these frequencies a unique order of markers on a circular map was determined. Positions of markers on a scale from 0 to 100 were found to be: cap/ery (0) — olil (16) — cob1-1354 (21) — ana101 (22) — cob2-1625 (24) — oli2 (35) — pho1 (40) — oxi3-2501 (44) — oxi3-3771 (47) — par (65) — oxi2 (79) — oxil (87) tms8 (93) —cap (100). The relevance of this map as to the faithful representation of the topology of gene loci on mitDNA is discussed. Correlation of retention frequencies of markers to their map positions reveals a pronounced polarity: mitDNA segments carrying the cob-oli1 segment prevail whereas segments retaining oxi3 are the least frequent.  相似文献

In plants, selfing and outcrossing may be affected by maternal mate choice and competition among pollen and zygotes. To evaluate this in Silene nutans, we pollinated plants with mixtures of (1) self‐ and outcross pollen and (2) pollen from within a population and from another population. Pollen fitness and zygote survival was estimated from the zygote survival and paternity of seeds. Self pollen had a lower fitness than outcross pollen, and selfed zygotes were less likely, or as likely, to develop into seeds. Hybrid zygotes survived as frequently or more than local zygotes, and pollen from one of the populations fertilized most ovules in both populations. Our results thus indicate strong maternal discrimination against selfing, whereas the success of outbreeding seems mostly affected by divergent pollen performance. The implications for the evolution of maternal mate choice are discussed.  相似文献

The change from outbreeding to selfing is one of the most frequent evolutionary transitions in flowering plants. It is often accompanied by characteristic morphological and functional changes to the flowers (the selfing syndrome), including reduced flower size and opening. Little is known about the developmental and genetic basis of the selfing syndrome, as well as its adaptive significance. Here, we address these issues using the two closely related species Capsella grandiflora (the ancestral outbreeder) and red shepherd's purse (Capsella rubella, the derived selfer). In C. rubella, petal size has been decreased by shortening the period of proliferative growth. Using interspecific recombinant inbred lines, we show that differences in petal size and flower opening between the two species each have a complex genetic basis involving allelic differences at multiple loci. An intraspecific cross within C. rubella suggests that flower size and opening have been decreased in the C. rubella lineage before its extensive geographical spread. Lastly, by generating plants that likely resemble the earliest ancestors of the C. rubella lineage, we provide evidence that evolution of the selfing syndrome was at least partly driven by selection for efficient self-pollination. Thus, our studies pave the way for a molecular dissection of selfing-syndrome evolution.  相似文献
