In 1999 the marine isopod Synidotea laevidorsalis (Miers 1881), indigenous to the northwest Pacific, was first documented in Delaware Bay, USA. We monitored weekly recruitment of this isopod and several other motile species in the Maurice River, a tributary of Delaware Bay. A spatial survey was also conducted. Abundance of S. laevidorsalis varied seasonally but overwhelmingly dominated other co-occurring species by an order of magnitude or more throughout most of the year. Isopod abundance increased through the summer of 2004 and peaked in September, coincident with the passing of Hurricane Ivan. Field observations documented large populations, frequently associated with pilings and buoy lines, throughout Delaware Bay in salinities of 4 through 22 ppt. The dramatic abundance of this isopod indicates that there is considerable potential for altering community structure. This isopod has yet to be observed along the Atlantic Coast of New Jersey or in Chesapeake Bay, but it has been reported near Charleston, SC. 相似文献

Attachment of eight groups of estuarine benthic species was recorded on a 4000 ft. intertidal-subtidal transect on Delaware Bay, Cape May, New Jersey. Asbestos-board panels were spaced at 3-foot vertical intervals and harvested at weekly intervals for two seasons. Intraspecies attachment patterns were very regular both spatially, and temporally indicating specific setting behavior interacting with a relatively stable environmental influence. Intertidal, on-bottom patterns were associated with Crepidula sp. and Balanus sp. whereas Sabellaria vulgaris preferred subtidal, on-bottom panels. Subtidal, off-bottom panels were colonized by Tubularia crocea, Conopeum tenuissimum, Caprellidae and Gammaridae. Crassostrea virginica showed a variable pattern, predominantly on-bottom and subtidal, but occasionally on-bottom intertidal, inshore. Factors producing concentration of larvae and release of the setting response are important in the inshore recruitment of oysters. All information indicates that the mechanism of selective settlement is a dominant factor in producing benthic assemblages. 相似文献

Abundance of the molluscan woodborer, Teredo navalis, in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, was reduced in breeding seasons following levels of infection of 40% or more by a haplosporidian parasite of the genus Haplosporidium. Infections also occurred in T. bartschi and T. furcifera, subtropical species which have been introduced into Barnegat Bay, and which may have originally introduced the parasite. Infections were not observed in Bankia gouldi, the most common molluscan woodborer in the bay. 相似文献

We investigated short-term movements of neonate and juvenile sandbar sharks, Carcharhinus plumbeus, on their nursery grounds in Delaware Bay. The majority of sharks tracked limited their movements to water less than 5m deep, remained within 5km of the coastline, and occupied oblong activity spaces along the coast. In addition to site-attached coastal movements observed, several sharks moved entirely across Delaware Bay or spent considerable time in deeper portions of the central bay. Sharks tracked on the New Jersey side of the bay tended to spend more time in deeper water, farther from shore than sharks tracked on the Delaware side. Observation-area curves estimated that optimal tracking time for sandbar sharks in Delaware Bay was 41h. Indices of site attachment showed that movement patterns of tracked sandbar sharks varied from nomadic to home ranging. There was no significant difference in rate of movement for day/night, crepuscular periods, or between juveniles and neonates. In general, young sandbar sharks patrolled the coast and appeared to be site attached to some extent, but were capable of making longer excursions, including movement entirely across Delaware Bay. 相似文献

The residence time, movements, and growth of tagged young-of-the-year Atlantic croaker, Micropogonias undulatus L., were studied from July to October 1998 as measures of the success of a marsh restoration project adjacent to Delaware Bay. A total of 8173 croaker (41-121 mm SL) were tagged from each of two creeks in both marshes during July and August with internal sequential coded wire microtags. A prior tag-retention study in the laboratory found a 95% tag retention rate. Of those tagged, 3.6% were recaptured within and nearby the study creeks using seines, otter trawls, and weirs during a 105-day period. Recapture percentages ranged from 1.5% to 6.1% in individual creeks in the restored marsh. There was some movement of tagged fish between creeks in the restored marsh and out into the main creek, but 95% of the recaptures were made in the subtidal and intertidal portions of the same creek in which they were tagged. Fewer fish were recaptured at the reference marsh (1.6% recapture; n=1489 tagged) up to 50 days after tagging, with no evidence of movement between creeks. The average individual growth rates for recaptured croaker was the same in both restored (0.69 mm/day) and reference (0.63 mm/day) marshes before egress from the creeks in September and October. As a result, both created creeks in a restored marsh and natural creeks in a reference marsh appeared to be utilized as young-of-the-year habitat in a similar way during the summer and until egress out of the marshes during the fall, thus this restoration effort has been successful in creating suitable habitat for Atlantic croaker. 相似文献

The fishery for the green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) began in New Brunswick in the late 1980s in response to increasing demand from Asian markets, primarily Japan. Fishing was initiated by members of the scallop industry and the harvesting practices were based on familiar fishing gear (scallop drags or dredges) and similar operations occurring simultaneously in Maine. Because of the potential impact of scallop gear on the shallow water populations in areas not traditionally fished, a study was initiated in 1993 to document (1) the proportion of sea urchins damaged during the harvesting operation, (2) the impact on and subsequent recovery time of the associated benthic flora and epifauna, and (3) the impacts on the bottom substrate. Two sites were chosen for the study based on a split-plot design with a control and experimental plot at each site. In each experimental plot, a towing lane was created parallel to shore. Divers used a fixed line transect method to survey the control and treatment plots prior to and after the harvesting operation done with commercial scallop Digby drags. Further diver-based surveys were done 3 and 6 months later. Results showed a significant decrease in sea urchin densities and an increase in the number of broken sea urchin tests after the harvesting operation at the Passamaquoddy Bay and Grand Manan sites (3–15%). On both sites, there were significant changes in the density of mobile predators such as lobsters, crabs, whelks and sculpins. Lobster density declined to zero after dragging, but the lack of body parts suggested they moved out of the area. Whelks were observed to move into each of the experimental areas, likely in response to probable increase in available food. The dragging operation increased the breakage rate of the kelp, Laminaria longicruris. From the study we concluded that there were short-term impacts from dragging, but the observable effects on the bottom from the single dragging event were gone in less than 3 months. A historical impact assessment was conducted for chemical contaminants in sediments of the tidal Passaic River in northern New Jersey. The assessment was based on sediment cores collected from 1990 to 1995. Each sediment core was segregated into fractions and the fractions dated using radioisotope analysis. Chemical concentrations, including a variety of metals and organic compounds, were estimated by decade for most of the 20th century in five reaches of the River. The chemical data for each decade were compared to available benchmark sediment quality values that represent levels of chemicals that may be toxic to benthic invertebrates in estuarine systems. Benchmark exceedances in the River were then calculated and characterized spatially and temporally using quantitative Geographic Information System (GIS) analyses, and the area of “impacted” sediments was calculated for each chemical and decade. Results of this assessment suggest that the ability of Passaic River sediments to support “normal” benthic invertebrate populations was limited by sediment contaminants throughout the 20th century. Conditions have improved somewhat since the 1950s, although impacts to benthic populations remain from several metals and organic compounds despite some overall improvements in sediment quality in recent years. 相似文献

Contaminant exposures in natural systems can be highly variable. This variability is superimposed upon cyclic variability in biological processes. Together, these factors can confound determination of contaminant effects. Long term, multidisciplined studies with high frequency sampling can be effective in overcoming such obstacles. While studying trace metal contamination in the tissues of the clam, Potamocorbula amurensis, in the northern reach of San Francisco Bay, an episode of high Ag concentrations was identified (maximum of 5.5?µg g?1) at two mid-estuary sites. High concentrations were not seen in clams up-estuary (maximum of 1.92?µg g?1) from these sites and were reduced down-estuary (maximum of 2.67?µg g?1). Silver is not common naturally in the environment, so its elevated presence is usually indicative of anthropogenic influences such as municipal and industrial discharge. Monthly sampling of reproductive status of clams characterized the reproductive cycle and differences in the patterns of reproductive activity that corresponded to changes in Ag tissue concentrations. The proportion of reproductive clams was less than 60% during periods when tissue concentrations were high (generally >2?µg g?1). When tissue concentrations of Ag decreased (≤1?µg g?1), the proportion of reproductive clams was 80 to 100%. A comparison between the annual proportion of reproductive clams and annual Ag tissue concentrations showed a significant negative correlation. No other measured environmental variables were correlated with reproductive impairment. The weight-of-evidence approach strongly supports a cause and effect relationship between Ag contamination and reduced reproductive activity in P. amurensis. 相似文献

The petroleum industry has an increasing interest in understanding the microbial communities driving biofouling and biocorrosion in reservoirs, wells, and infrastructure. However, sampling of the relevant produced fluids from subsurface environments for microbiological analyses is often challenged by high liquid pressures, workplace regulations, operator liability concerns, and remote sampling locations. These challenges result in infrequent sampling opportunities and the need to store and preserve the collected samples for several days or weeks. Maintaining a representative microbial community structure from produced fluid samples throughout storage and handling is essential for accurate results of downstream microbial analyses. Currently, no sample handling or storage recommendations exist for microbiological analyses of produced fluid samples. We used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to monitor the changes in microbial communities in hypersaline produced water stored at room temperature or at 4?°C for up to 7 days. We also analyzed storage at ?80?°C across a 3-week period. The results suggest ideal handling methods would include placing the collected sample on ice as soon as possible, but at least within 24?h, followed by shipping the samples on ice over 2–3?days, and finally, long-term storage in the ?20?°C or ?80?°C freezer. 相似文献

Effects of winds, tides and river water runoff on the formation and disappearance of Alexandrium tamarense blooms in Hiroshima Bay, Japan were investigated using data from March to June of 1992–1998. The north wind at the initial growth phase of A. tamarense appeared to have prevented bloom formation by dispersing the organism offshore and/or through turbulent mixing. The decrease in the cell density at the end of the blooms was significantly affected by tidal mixing, indicating that the turbulent mixing induced by tidal excursions may be one of the factors terminating the bloom. Box model analyses applied to the data collected from the observations in 1996 and 1997 showed that river water runoff apparently dispersed the bloom, implying that stratification of the water column due to river water runoff is not necessary for the bloom formation. In conclusion, calm conditions with less wind and tidal mixing along with less river water runoff are considered to be important for the formation of the A. tamarense bloom in Hiroshima Bay, Japan. 相似文献

The effects of redd excavation by female quinnat salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha walbaum) on the bentic invertebrate communities of two stable springfed spawning streams in the headwaters of the Rakaia River, South Island, New Zealand, were studied during January to September 1982. The gross effects of salmon spawning on the streams appear to be: the loss of instream macrophytes, algae and mosses, a loss of fines and detritus, and a modification of the pool-riffle character. Redd excavation may be associated with a reduction in benthic standing crop of up to 83.6%, with only a minor effect on the benthic community structure. Benthic recolonisation rates were similar for both spawning streams, with almost complete recovery after 95 days. 相似文献

Between 1981 and 1993 a methane pipeline was deployed between Sicily (Italy) and Tunisia. This involved the construction of
a pipeline trench, which damaged the Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile meadow at Capo Feto (SW Sicily, Italy) and disturbed the surrounding meadow. Seagrass growth and population dynamics
were examined at different depth ranges and at increasing distances from the construction site outer limit (5, 15, 30, 50 m).
Results showed significant differences between the shallow (10±3.3 m) and the deep (20±4.6 m) meadow as well as differences
among distances. The age structure of P. oceanica varied along the distance gradient and with depth. The mortality rate decreased with distance from the trench at all depth
ranges, showing that the plants close to the excavation suffered a higher level of disturbance. Turnover and annual gross
shoot recruitment rate (Rgross) were higher in the shallow portion of the meadow than in the deep range. Forecast of future meadow development (Rnet) close to the trench indicates that, if present conditions are maintained, shoot density will be reduced by 50% over the

The Long-term Effects of Disturbance on Organic and Inorganic Nitrogen Export in the White Mountains, New Hampshire 总被引:14,自引:8,他引:14
Traditional biogeochemical theories suggest that ecosystem nitrogen retention is controlled by biotic N limitation, that stream N losses should increase with successional age, and that increasing N deposition will accelerate this process. These theories ignore the role of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) as a mechanism of N loss. We examined patterns of organic and inorganic N export from sets of old-growth and historically (80–110 years ago) logged and burned watersheds in the northeastern US, a region of moderate, elevated N deposition. Stream nitrate concentrations were strongly seasonal, and mean (± SD) nitrate export from old-growth watersheds (1.4 ± 0.6 kg N ha−1 y−1) was four times greater than from disturbed watersheds (0.3 ± 0.3 kg N ha−1 y−1), suggesting that biotic control over nitrate loss can persist for a century. DON loss averaged 0.7 (± 0.2) kg N ha−1 y−1 and accounted for 28–87% of total dissolved N (TDN) export. DON concentrations did not vary seasonally or with successional status, but correlated with dissolved organic carbon (DOC), which varied inversely with hardwood forest cover. The patterns of DON loss did not follow expected differences in biotic N demand but instead were consistent with expected differences in DOC production and sorption. Despite decades of moderate N deposition, TDN export was low, and even old-growth forests retained at least 65% of N inputs. The reasons for this high N retention are unclear: if due to a large capacity for N storage or biological removal, N saturation may require several decades to occur; if due to interannual climate variability, large losses of nitrate may occur much sooner.
