The primary purpose of this study was to test our hypothesis that the behavior of self-selecting the preferred ambient illuminance might be determined by a load error between the core temperature and its set-point. Seven female volunteers were asked to choose the preferred ambient light intensity by adjusting a rheostat from the time when they rose spontaneously in the morning to the time when they felt sleepy and retired. Rectal temperature was measured every 10 min. Their preferred ambient light intensity increased quickly and then gradually after they rose and rose to approximately 2000 lx over 3 hrs. It decreased gradually and then quickly to the time when they retired. We discussed these findings in terms of a load error between the actual core temperature and its set-point.  相似文献

With civilized environments in modern society, since the people tend to depend more on artificial illumination than on natural illumination which makes less discrepancy between day and night life, clarifying the relationship between human life and illumination is necessary. In our previous studies, we found that the subjects dressed faster with thicker clothing in the morning than in the evening when the room temperature decreased from 30 degrees C to 15 degrees C over 1 hour. We considered these results in terms of load error between the actual and set-point values in the core temperature. The present study was designed to examine the effect of bright light (3,000 lx)/dim light (50 lx) exposure (09:30 h-14:30 h) on dressing behavior and thermoregulatory responses in the elderly people during the afternoon cold exposure. Five female subjects were instructed to dress to feel comfortable when the room temperature was decreased from 30 degrees C to 15 degrees C (15:00 h-17:00 h). The subjects felt cooler and dressed more quickly with thicker clothing after dim light exposure, it is conceivable that the set-point value of core temperature is reduced under the bright light condition. We discussed these results in terms of the establishment of set-point values in the core temperature at bright light condition. If the set-point of the core temperature is lower in the bright than in the dim light condition in present experiment, the dressing behavior with thinner clothing in the bright light condition is advantageous, since it enables the core temperature to reach its set-point value more easily.  相似文献

1. We studied the effect of face cooling accompanied by a fall of tympanic temperature on color preference in 8 women at an ambient temperature of 28°C.2. The face only was cooled by blowing 15°C air at 6 m/s on the face only. Controls received either no wind at all or a wind (24°C, 6 m/s) on the body and appendages only.3. Most subjects preferred warmer colors after facial cooling than after no facial cooling.4. The facial cooling and decrease in tympanic temperature may indicate an increase in load error between core temperature and set-point.  相似文献

The effects after exposure to two different light intensities (dim, 50 lx and bright, 5000 lx) on thermoregulatory responses during exercise in a climatic chamber (27 degrees C, 60% relative humidity) were studied in nine untrained female subjects, aged 19-22 years. The subjects were in either the dim or bright light intensities from 0600 hours to 1200 hours. They were then instructed to exercise on a cycle ergometer at an intensity of 60% maximal oxygen uptake from 1200 hours to 1300 hours in a light intensity of 500 Ix. The main results can be summarized as follows. Firstly, exercise-induced increases of core temperature were significantly smaller, after exposure to the bright than after the dim light intensities, although both tests were performed in the same light intensity. Secondly, body mass loss after exercise was significantly greater after exposure to the bright light intensity. Thirdly, an increase in salivary lactic acid during exercise was significantly lower after the bright intensity. Fourthly although the salivary melatonin level was not different between the two light intensities both before and after the exercise, it increased significantly during exercise only after the bright intensity. These results are discussed in terms of the establishment of a lower set-point in the core temperature after exposure to a bright light intensity.  相似文献

The present experiment tested our hypothesis that the subjects will wear more clothing in the evening cold under the influence of bright light exposure in the late afternoon and evening. Nine young female adults participated in this study. Light intensity was controlled from 9:00 h to 16:00 h at 100 lx, and from 16:00 h to 20:30 h either at 3000 lx in the bright light (Brighte) or at 10 lx in the dim light ("Dim") conditions. Light intensity was maintained at 10 lx from 20:30 h to 23:00 h. They were instructed to wear garments to maintain themselves to feel comfortable during the fall of ambient temperature from 30 degrees C to 15 degrees C (21:00 h - 22:00 h) and its constant temperature at 15 degrees C (22:00 h - 23:00 h). Most subjects dressed in heavier clothing in the "Bright" than in the "Dim" conditions. The evening fall of core temperature was significantly smaller and the urinary melatonin secretion was significantly lower in the "Bright" condition, suggesting that the set-point of core temperature has been set at a higher level during the evening and at night, being influenced by the less amount of melatonin secretion. Thus, it is concluded that the late afternoon and evening bright light exposure could accelerate the dressing behavior in the evening cold.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of menstrual cycle on color preference in nine normally menstruating female subjects. They were instructed to choose their preferred color out of 45 Munsell hues every 5 min at ambient temperatures (Ta) of 28°C (630-800 h), from 28°C to 23°C (800-900 h) and at 23°C (900-930 h). Warmer color hues were preferred during the luteal phase than the follicular phase at 28°C, while there did not exist any significant differences at other Tas. The findings that a preference for warmer colors occurred in the luteal phase at 28°C is discussed in terms of the load error between actual core temperature and its setpoint.  相似文献

One physiological mechanism used by reptiles to remain within thermal optima is their ability to reversibly alter skin colour, imparting changes in overall reflectance, and influencing the rate of heat gain from incident radiation. The ability to lighten or darken their skin is caused by the movement of pigment within the dermal chromatophore cells. Additionally, lizards, as ectotherms, significantly lower their preferred body temperatures when experiencing stressors such as hypoxia. This decrease in preferred temperature has been proposed to be the result of a downward adjustment of the thermal set-point, the temperature around which the body temperature is typically defended. We tested the hypothesis that lightening of the skin in lizards would be modified by hypoxia in a manner consistent with the known reduction in preferred temperatures. Skin colouration values of the dorsal skin of bearded dragons were analysed at three different levels of oxygen (20.8, 9.9 and 4.9 kPa) and at temperatures spanning the preferred temperature range (30, 32, 34, 36, 38 and 40 C). Hypoxic lizards lightened their skin at lower ambient temperatures more than normoxic ones, and in an oxygen-dependent fashion. The orchestrated adjustment of skin reflectance suggests that this physiological trait is being regulated at a new and lower set-point. Evidence from this study demonstrates that skin colouration plays a role in body temperature regulation and that the reduction in temperature set-point so prevalent in hypoxia is also manifested in this physiological trait.  相似文献

Neurotensin analog NT77 induces regulated hypothermia in the rat   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The potential use of hypothermia as a therapeutic treatment for stroke and other pathological insults has prompted the search for drugs that can lower core temperature. Ideally, a drug is needed that reduces the set-point for control of core temperature (T(c)) and thereby induces a regulated reduction in T(c). To this end, a neurotensin analog (NT77) that crosses the blood brain barrier and induces hypothermia was assessed for its effects on the set-point for temperature regulation in the Sprague-Dawley rat by measuring behavioral and autonomic thermoregulatory responses. Following surgical implanation of radiotransmitters to monitor T(c), rats were placed in a temperature gradient and allowed to select from a range of ambient temperatures (T(a)) while T(c) was monitored by radiotelemetry. There was an abrupt decrease in selected T(a) from 29 to 16 degrees C and a concomitant reduction in T(c) from 37.4 to 34.0 degrees C 1 hr after IP injection of 5.0 mg/kg NT77. Selected T(a) and T(c) then recovered to control levels by 1.5 hr and 4 hr, respectively. Oxygen consumption (M) and heat loss (H) were measured in telemetered rats housed in a direct calorimeter maintained at a T(a) of 23.5 degrees C. Injection of NT77 initially led to a reduction in M, little change in H, and marked decrease in T(c). H initially rose but decreased around the time of the maximal decrease in T(c). Overall, NT77 appears to induce a regulated hypothermic response because the decrease in T(c) was preceded by a reduction in heat production, no change in heat loss, and preference for cold T(a)'s. Inducing a regulated hypothermic response with drugs such as NT77 may be an important therapy for ischemic disease and other insults.

Deviations of the body temperature of homeothermic animals may be regulated or forced. A regulated change in core temperature is caused by a natural or synthetic compound that displaces the set-point temperature. A forced shift occurs when an excessive environmental or endogenous heat load, or heat sink, exceeds the body's capacity to thermoregulate but does not affect set-point. A fever is the paradigm of a regulated increase in body temperature, but the term fever has acquired a strict pathological definition over the past two decades. Consequently, other forms of nonpathological, regulated elevations in body temperature have generally been classified as hyperthermia; and decreases in core temperature--either forced or regulated--have generally been classified as hypothermia. Since the terms hyperthermia and hypothermia fail to distinguish a regulated vs. a forced temperature change, a confusion of terms has been created in the literature. It would appear that “resisted or unregulated hyperthermia” and “hypothermia,” respectively, are appropriate terms for describing a forced increase and decrease in core temperature. A nonpathological but regulated elevation in temperature may be defined as unresisted or regulated hyperthermia, whereas a regulated decrease in temperature may be termed unresisted or regulated hypothermia. This simple scheme appears to be the most practical means for distinguishing between forced and regulated changes in core temperature.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the thermal comfort requirements for steps in temperature. Thirty male subjects were exposed for 50 min to a 34 or 37°C condition, and then quickly transferred to a cooler environment of 31, 28, 25, and 22°C for 50 min. Mean skin temperature was continuously measured, and the subjects reported their thermal sensation and comfort sensation every 2 min. Just after the step changes, the mean skin temperature immediately decreased, while the thermal sensation overshot and gradually rose again. Both the skin temperature and the thermal sensation seemed to reach a constant level within about 20 min. However, there were differences in the mean skin temperature and the neutral temperature derived from the correlation between the ambient temperature and the thermal sensation even 50 min after the steps, due to the thermal environmental condition before the changes of temperature. The change in the neutral temperature with time was expressed as two attenuating equations. These equations indicate that there is an obvious difference between the neutral temperatures due to the thermal condition before step changes, and that it takes >50 min after the step changes to reach the steady state. It is expected that these equations predict in quantitative terms the thermal comfort requirements within a given experimental condition.  相似文献

Many factors contribute to the activity of animals in the wild. Whilst daily and seasonal rhythms are likely to be present, and to represent underlying biological functions, these will normally be modified by several factors in the environment. Important amongst these are light, temperature, humidity and whether or not it is raining. There is also the problem that the factors might interact, the effect of, say, time of day, being modified by the concomitant temperature. Separating out the effects of these different factors experimentally can be extremely arduous, if not impossible. An alternative approach is to treat the environmental factors as covariants, and then to separate out their effects from the biological ones by statistical means, using Analysis of Covariance, ANCOVA. The potential of this method is illustrated in the current report by a consideration of exits and entries of a colony of bees from their hive. Hourly measurements of this behaviour were taken during the daylight hours for three consecutive days in 11 consecutive months of the year. At the same time, ambient temperature, light intensity, humidity and whether or not it was raining were recorded. ANCOVA enabled the effects of temperature, humidity, light and rainfall upon the exits from the hive and entries back into it to be separated from the effects of time of day and time of the year. The analyses allowed those climatic variables, in addition to time-of-day and time-of-year effects, that influenced behaviour to be identified. Such climatic variables have not been previously isolated, and this might have lead to a misinterpretation of similar results in the past. Having separated out any effects of climatic variables (the covariates), the interaction between time of day and time of the year could then be investigated. Furthermore it has been possible to quantify the effects upon behaviour of each covariate. Rainfall was shown to decrease activity by more than 80%. For the other variables (temperature, humidity and light intensity), the statistical model allowed for the possibility that an increase in the variable initially produced a rise in activity but that this was followed, if the variable continued to rise, by a fall in activity. For light intensity, only a very modest increase in activity was found, and this continued throughout the range of intensities measured. However, for both temperature and humidity, the effects were more marked and showed 'turning points'. That is, activity increased as the ambient temperature rose until activity peaked at about 33-35°C; after which activity began to fall. Similarly, entries into the hive rose with increasing humidity up to a value of 48%, but fell thereafter. By contrast, exits from the hive increased with increasing humidity throughout the range measured. In the biological system tested, this form of analysis has produced valuable information about the way different factors influence activity in a field study. The results strongly suggest that the proposed methodology has a much wider and more general application. The way in which this type of analysis might be elaborated is discussed.  相似文献

Both cover and light intensity are important factors in microhabitat selection of fishes, suggesting a possible hierarchical relationship. Many centrarchids have been shown to prefer low light intensities and heavy submerged cover, but adult nonbreeding longear sunfish are reported to occupy sparsely vegetated, clear, shallow water during the brightest part of the day, probably for foraging. To determine the relative importance of cover and light intensity to longear sunfish, we presented nonbreeding adults with choices between these two conditions in a series of three laboratory experiments. Longear sunfish preferred low light to high light intensity and preferred submerged cover to no cover. However, when given a choice, they preferred to occupy low light intensity conditions without cover rather than submerged cover under higher light intensity conditions. Thus, low light intensity, such as is found in greater pool depths, may be the preferred refuge from predation for longear sunfish.  相似文献

The pigmy backswimmer, Plea minutissima, from time to time leaves the water to apply its antimicrobial metathoracic gland secretion to its water-repellent ventral pubescence (“secretion-grooming”) which is enclosed by an air sheath when submerged and has a respiratory function. Secretion-grooming keeps the hairs free of microbial contamination and thus hydrophobous and functional. The grooming behaviour is regulated by abiotic factors. It is released by an increase in light intensity or water temperature, with a sudden rise in temperature being particularly effective. The higher the temperature and light intensity, the faster the grooming act is performed and completed. The grooming motivation is higher at a higher ambient temperature, but declines once the behaviour has been brought to completion. As a consequence the highest grooming activity in the field is observed in summer on the first sunny day after a prolonged period of overcast days. The tying of secretion-grooming to abiotic factors probably serves to destroy epizoic microorganisms before they begin to multiply more rapidly at higher temperatures. The mechanisms regulating the secretion-grooming behaviour of Plea may be of significance also for the regulation of certain other insect behaviours (e.g., flight behaviour).  相似文献

Cicadas prevent body temperature from exceeding tolerable levels by a combination of behavioral responses and sweating. Sweating is activated when body temperature reaches a critical set-point temperature. We investigated control of sweating in the cicada, Tibicen dealbatus, by chemically manipulating biosynthesis of prostaglandins and other eicosanoids. Injecting prostaglandins in amounts equal to those that induce behavioral fever in scorpions and crustaceans resulted in only a small increase in set-point temperature. Blocking prostaglandin biosynthesis with cyclo-oxygenase inhibitors such as aspirin produced significant changes in set-point temperature, confirming that prostaglandins are involved in control of sweating. However, the effect of cyclo-oxygenase inhibitors was not the opposite of the effect of prostaglandins. Instead, the effect of cyclo-oxygenase inhibitors depended strongly on the value of setpoint temperature prior to treatment. Results of biochemical manipulations of other steps in eicosanoid biosynthetic pathways corroborated the results of cyclo-oxygenase inhibition and indicated that eicosanoids other than prostaglandins may be involved in control of body temperature in normothermic T. dealbatus. The effect of cyclo-oxygenase inhibitors on a given set-point temperature depended on the ambient temperature experienced by cicadas during the experiment. Surprisingly, cicadas exposed to ambient temperatures 40°C delayed activation of sweating until body temperature exceeded values normally recorded from T. dealbatus in the field. Control of body temperature in normothermic cicadas is thus complex, involving inputs from body temperature sensors, ambient temperature sensors, and at least two cyclo-oxygenase-dependent regulatory pathways.Abbreviations PUFA polyunsatured fatty acid(s) - T a ambient temperature - T b body temperature - T set set-point of body temperature for activation of sweating  相似文献

Female gypsy moths (Lymantria dispar) of Asian heritage studied in central Siberia and Germany exhibit a highly synchronous flight at dusk, after light intensity falls to about 2 lux. This critical light intensity sets the timing of flight behaviors independent of ambient temperature. Flight follows several minutes of preflight wing fanning during which females in Germany and those from a laboratory colony (derived from Siberian stock) raised their thoracic temperatures to 32–33°C at ambient temperatures of 19–22°C. Thoracic temperature of females in free flight exceeded the air temperature (19–22°C) by approximately 11–13°C. The duration of wing fanning was strongly dependent on ambient temperature. In Germany, where ambient temperatures at dusk ranged between 21 and 25°C, females wing fanned for only 2.1 ± 0.2 (SE) min; in the much colder temperatures prevalent at dusk in Bellyk, central Siberia (11–13°C), females spent 11.2 ± 0.6 min in preflight wing fanning. The majority (80%) of mated and even virgin females initiated flight during the evening of the day they eclosed. However, in Bellyk, a small proportion (12%) of females wing fanned for an extended time but then stopped, whereas others (8%) never wing fanned and, therefore, did not take flight. Females also were capable of flight when disturbed during the daylight hours in Germany where the maximal temperature was high (27–30°C), but not in Siberia, where temperatures peaked at only 17–19°C. However, Siberian females were able to propel themselves off the tree on which they were perched by executing several vigorous wing flicks when approached by the predaceous tettigoniid, Tettigonia caudata.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity is a key trait of successful pest species, and may increase the ability to cope with higher, more variable temperatures under climate change. We investigate the plasticity of preferred temperature in a widespread agricultural pest, the wingless grasshopper (Phaulacridium vittatum). Preferred temperature is a measure of thermoregulatory behaviour through habitat selection. It is influenced by melanism, which affects body temperature by determining the amount of radiation absorbed by the body. First we demonstrate that body temperature and preferred temperature in P. vittatum is influenced by melanism, by comparing the preferred temperature of the colour morphs in laboratory thermal gradients and field body temperatures in natural populations. We then test whether preferred temperature changes in response to changes in body temperature, by determining preferred temperature before and after manipulation of melanism by painting. When melanism was manipulated experimentally in live grasshoppers, preferred temperature changed to reflect the thermal qualities of the new colour. The preferred temperature of light grasshoppers increased after they were painted black, and decreased after being painted white. Similarly, dark individuals that were painted white behaved like a light individual, maintaining a lower body temperature. Preferred temperature in P.vittatum is a plastic thermoregulatory response to ambient temperature, mediated by the influence of melanism on body temperature.  相似文献
