Eight-year-old Metasequoia glyptostroboides seedlings were tilted at a 45° angle to induce compression-wood formation on the lower side of the stems. After 2 weeks of treatment, half of the seedlings were sampled and the remaining half were tilted to the opposite orientation to exchange the upper and lower sides and were kept for 2 more weeks until sampled. Cambium-emitted ethylene was analyzed by gas chromatography with flame-ionization detection. Endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Tracheid production and compression-wood formation were determined by light microscopy. Anatomical studies showed that tracheid production was promoted and compression-wood tracheids always developed on the gravitationally lower side of tilted stems in both the original tilting and the subsequent reverse-tilting periods. These were accompanied by an increase in IAA content in and an accelerated ethylene-evolution rate from the cambial region of the same side.  相似文献

Two-year-old Metasequoia glyptostroboides and 3-month-old Aesculus turbinata seedlings were tilted at a 45° angle to induce compression wood formation on the lower side of the former species and tension wood on the upper side of the latter. Two weeks later, the seedlings were tilted in an opposite direction at 45° so that the upper and lower sides changed to each other. This reverse tilting was kept for 7 weeks for M. glyptostroboides and 6 weeks for A. turbinata. The seedlings were sampled and analyzed at intervals throughout each experimental period so that an ethylene evolution kinetic was monitored. Ethylene evolution from the cambial region of the upper and lower sides of tilted stems was measured separately by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector. Xylem production expressed as wood area during each experimental period was microscopically determined. In both tilting and reverse tilting periods, the rates of ethylene evolution from the lower side of M. glyptostroboides and the upper side of A. turbinata, where xylem production was accelerated and compression or tension wood formation was induced, had increased to high levels, whereas those from the opposite sides had either remained low (in tilting period) or rapidly recovered to low levels (in reverse tilting period). The cambial activity quantified by wood formation, including reaction wood, in both species showed the same tendency as ethylene evolution. The stem side with vigorous ethylene evolution, xylem development and reaction wood formation reversed with the reversal of tilting orientation. The roles of accelerated ethylene evolution in reaction wood formation in the tilted seedlings of gymnosperm and angiosperm trees are compared and discussed. This work was presented at the 5th Pacific Region Wood Anatomy Conference, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 9–14 September 2002  相似文献

The changes in length on the two opposite sides of etiolated radish (Raphanus sativus) hypocotyls prior to, and following gravitropic stimulation, were measured using an infrared-imaging system. It was observed that the growth suppression on the upper side began first at least 10 min after the onset of gravitropic stimulation, and after 30 min the acceleration in growth on the lower side started. The gravitropic curvature was steadily induced from 10 min. When radish hypocotyls were switched from a vertical to horizontal position for different durations and then replaced to the vertical position, the growth suppression on the gravity-stimulated (upper) side was observed in all cases, but the acceleration in growth on the opposite (lower) side appeared only in continuously gravity-stimulated seedlings, although it occurred later than the growth suppression on the upper side. These results suggest that the suppression in growth on the upper side of the hypocotyls is a direct effect of gravitropic stimulation, but not the acceleration on the lower side. When 4-methylthio-3-butenyl isothiocyanate (4-MTBI), which has an inhibitory activity against radish hypocotyl growth, was applied on the one side of radish hypocotyls and then the 4-MTBI-applied side or opposite side was placed in a horizontal position, the former showed greater bending than the control, suggesting that the growth suppression on the upper side is enhanced and maintained with MTBI application there. In the latter case, the seedlings showed less bending than the control, suggesting a decrease in growth on the lower side with MTBI application. All the results suggest that gravitropism of radish hypocotyls may be caused by an increase in growth-inhibiting substance(s) induced with gravitropic stimulation in the upper side, inducing growth inhibition there.  相似文献

Palisade and spongy-parenchyma cells were isolated from the leaves of a number of mesomorphic dicotyledons by simply brushing the upper and lower sides, respectively, of the leaves with nylon brushes. Cross-contamination with the opposite cell type was minimal and both cell types were photosynthetically as active as leaf discs. The rates and early products of CO2 incorporation in the two cell types isolated from Zinnia elegans Jacq. plants grown in full natural light were the same, indicating that the photosynthetic physiology of the two cell types is quite similar.  相似文献

The pulvinus of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) responds to unilateral photo-excitation by phototropic curvature. Osmotically active solutes and water are transported from its exposed to the opposite sector of its motor tissue, resulting in differential changes in turgor pressure in these sectors and generation of a trans-pulvinar torque. A null-point approach was used to non-invasively study these dynamic changes in the terminal leaflet of bean. A variable torque was applied perpendicular to the midrib, to restrain laminar movement by precisely and continuously counteracting the generated torque. This equilibrium prevented curvature of the pulvinus and the associated opposite axial changes in volume in the opposite sectors of its motor tissue. The laminar torques measured were used to estimate stresses (changes in turgor pressure) generated within the motor tissue. These stress values were used to derive the corresponding changes in osmotic pressures and in solute concentration. Skotonastically downfolded leaflets were excited with white light to study their combined dynamic response to photonastic and phototropic excitation. Photonastically unfolded (horizontal) leaflets were excited with blue and red light, alone and in combination, to determine the spectral dependence of the dynamic pulvinar responses tophototropic excitation by itself.  相似文献

The simultaneous excitation of plasmon polaritons on both surfaces of metal film was studied for asymmetric dielectric-metal-dielectric corrugated structures. Due to the small resonant absorption of the incident light on the transmission side of the structure, we investigated the enhancement of the surface plasmon polaritons on the mentioned side by controlling the structure parameters. When the illuminate light changes from normal incidence to non-normal incidence, the resonant absorption peak splits into a doublet. The simultaneous excitation of surface plasmon polaritons on both surfaces of the metal film can be achieved by controlling the incident angle. Since the wave vector matching condition is not satisfied, there is no coupling between the plasmon polaritons modes on the two surfaces of the corrugated metallic film. The excitation and control of the non-coupled surface plasmon polartions simultaneously propagating on the different interfaces of one metallic film have potential applications for designing novel compact and tunable nano-photonic devices at visible frequency.  相似文献

Solar-tracking leaf movements in velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Leaves of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti) exhibited solar-tracking movements in several experiments using different cultural conditions near Ames, IA, U.S.A. Freely moving leaves maintained a smaller angle between the normal to the leaf and the sun's rays than did leaves fixed in one position in both greenhouse and field experiments. Freely moving leaves had higher total daily carbon gain, transpiration, and water use efficiency than leaves fixed in a horizontal position. Leaves on different sides of the plant exhibited different abilities to track the sun, with leaves on the north side of the plant least able to track the sun.  相似文献

Abstract. Gravitropic curvature results from unequal growth rates on the upper and lower sides of horizontal stems. These unequal growth rates cold be due to differences in wall extensibility between the two sides. To test this, the time course of curvature of horizontal sunflower ( Helianthus anmus L.) hypocotyls was determined and compared with the time courses of changes in Instron-measured wall extensibility (PEx) of the upper and lower epidermal layers. As gravicurvature developed, so did the difference in PEx between the upper and lower epidermis. The enhanced growth rate on the lower side during the period of maximum increase in curvature was matched by PEx values greater than those of the vertical control, while the inhibited growth rate on the upper side was accompanied by PEx values below that of the control. The close correlation between changes in growth rates and alterations in PEx demonstrates that changes in wall extensibility play a major role in controlling gravicurvature.  相似文献

Horizontal primary roots of Zea mays L. were photographed during the course of their gravireaction and during a preceding growth period in the vertical orientation. The displacement, by root elongation, of marker particles on the root surface was recorded. The particle-displacement rates were used to estimate the distribution of elemental elongation rates along opposite sides of the growing root apex. In the temperature range 21–25°C there was a stimulation of local elongation rates along the upper side of a gravireacting root and a reduction (and sometimes a cessation) of elongation along the lower side. Elemental elongation rates have been related to the development of root curvature, and the magnitude of the differential growth between upper and lower sides required for a particular rate of bending has also been estimated. The results complement, and are compatible with, findings relating to the distribution of certain endogenous growth regulators believed to participate in the gravireaction.Abbreviation RELEL relative elemental rate of elongation  相似文献

Following cation and anion exchange chromatography, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) was converted to the 2,4-dinitrophenyl derivative and then purified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). After three HPLC steps, endogenous ACC was identified by GCMS in the vascular cambium on the lower side of Pinus contorta Dougl. ssp. latifolia branches in association with compressionwood differentiation, but ACC was not detected in the opposite wood cambial region on the upper sides of the same branches.

The possibility that ACC and ethylene have physiological roles in cambial activity and compressionwood tracheid differentiation is discussed.

Using light and scanning electron microscopy, a sensory field consisting of 15-20 campaniform sensillae is described on the base of the stylus of the endophytic ovipositor of Odonata. It is hypothesised that two symmetric styli equipped with this number of sensillae can function as a mechanosensory organ responsible for control of precise egg positioning in plant stems during oviposition. In laboratory experiments with females of damselflies Lestes sponsa and Lestes barbarus (Lestidae), it was demonstrated that the distance between laid eggs is not dependent on the presence of styli. Removal of styli from both sides did not influence a shift of oviposition to one side. Females with one removed stylus shifted the clutch line in the opposite direction toward the removed stylus. Additionally, removal of styli influenced positions of single eggs in egg sets, and disturbed the capacity for complex oviposition. Thus, both morphological and experimental data support the hypothesis that styli participate in the control of egg line and egg patterning in the clutch.  相似文献

This paper reports that extracellular reductase activity in leaves of Elodea canadensis, hitherto never associated with polar processes thought to be involved in bicarbonate utilization, also shows a very marked polarity in light. The effect of ferricyanide, applied to the lower side of illuminated leaves, was a depolarization of the membrane electrical potential of up to 110 millivolts, while no depolarization was induced when ferricyanide was applied to the upper side. In the dark ferricyanide induced a depolarization when applied to either the upper or to the lower side of the leaf. Staining with tetrazolium salts, specific indicators for reductase activity, resulted in the formation of a precipitate on the lower side of the leaf when illuminated and on both sides in the dark. The precipitate was only located along the plasmalemma.  相似文献

Lateral Shoot Growth in Horizontal Apple Stems   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Experimental evidence supports the theory that inhibition ofbuds on the under side of horizontal apple branches is causedby the movement under gravity of substances from the upper tothe under sides. Horizontal shoots of apple Crab C were splitalmost to the apex and the two halves separated by a non-porousplastic film. Where upper and lower sides were isolated by theplastic barrier, long shoots grew from the under as well asfrom the upper side. On control shoots, and shoots split vertically, most buds on the under side remained dormant.  相似文献

Abstract A detailed study of the changes in growth rate on the two sides of a shoot prior to, and following geostimulation has been undertaken. Data from etiolated Zea seedlings, and cucumber hypocotyls, and from light grown sunflower hypocotyls are presented. In all cases, the differential growth which brings about geocurvature begins simultaneously along the length of the organ. This is contrary to previous reports in the literature which suggested that curvature begins first at the tip of an organ and progresses basipetally. The feature which is common to all species investigated is that growth of the upper side of the shoot ceases following geostimulation. In some cases there is also a marked acceleration in growth rate on the lower side of the shoot (sunflower) but other species show no such acceleration of growth (cucumber). It has been assumed for many years that the major factor causing upward curvature was an acceleration of growth on the lower side of the organ. The data presented here show that the cessation of growth on the upper side is a major, and in some cases the only factor bringing about geocurvature. The data are discussed in relation to the mechanisms which might control geotropic curvature.  相似文献

Auxin Asymmetry during Gravitropism by Tomato Hypocotyls   总被引:9,自引:6,他引:3
Gravitropic asymmetry of auxin was observed in hypocotyls of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) soon after horizontal placement: the ratio of apically supplied [3H]IAA collected from the lower sides to that from the upper sides was about 1.4 between 5 and 10 minutes. This was adequately early to account for the beginning of curvature. The auxin asymmetry ratio rose to about 2.5 between 20 and 25 minutes, and to 3.5 during the main phase of curvature. This compares reasonably well with the roughly 3.9 ratio for elongation on the lower side to elongation on the upper side that is the basis for the curvature. These data extend evidence that the Went-Cholodny theory for the mediation of tropisms is valid for dicot stems. Also consistent with the theory, an auxin asymmetry ratio of 2.5 was observed when wrong-way gravitropic curvature developed following application of a high level of auxin. In addition to reversing the asymmetry of elongation, the large supplement of auxin resulted in lower net elongation. Previous data established that ethylene is not involved in this decrease of growth as a function of increasing level of auxin.  相似文献

Abstract. Mature leaves of many plants re-orientate their laminae photonastically in response to non-directional light signals, and/or phototropically in response to directional light signals, by flexing of pulvini, most commonly subtending their bases. Physiological and structural specializations of the pulvinus enable it to flex, by rapidly undergoing differential and repeatedly reversible axial volume changes (expansion/contraction) in opposite sectors of its motor tissue. Light-driven leaf movements are adaptations that contribute to the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus in the leaf. The phototropic response maximizes the harvesting of photosynthetically radiant energy. The photonastic response to dark-to-light transitions increases the interception of light by unfolding the lamina. Another photonastic response modulates the interception of radiant energy by the lamina, allowing it to evade damage by light in excess of its photosynthetic capacity when the leaf is under stress. The same unidentified blue-absorbing pigment system appears to be involved in all these responses. Non-directional light signals are perceived in the pulvinus. Perception of directional light signals may be localized in other parts of the leaf in different plants: for example, the pulvinus in most leguminous species, and the lamina in malvaceous and at least one leguminous species. The perception of non-directional and directional light signals, their transduction to differential volume changes in the target cells, and their transmission between the two where the sites are separate, are discussed.  相似文献

Upon irradiation in the ultraviolet region aromatic chromophores may transfer energy to a nearby Tb3+, which in turn emits a green phosphorescence. This paper reports the characterization of the ultraviolet excitation spectra of aromatic chromophores capable of transferring energy to Tb3+ by monitoring of the green Tb3+ emission in the 540-550 nm region. Results are included for complexes containing phenyl, hydroxyphenyl, indole. and catechol chromophores. Characteristic excitation spectra are presented for the aromatic chromophores occurring as side chains in proteins. Though it is preferable to compare entire excitation spectra, the ratio of intensities at 292 to 276 nm, R, is suggested as a useful diagnostic criterion. Numerical R values are indicative of the following aromatic side chains as the energy donor to Tb3+: R <0.2, unionized tyrosine; R = 0.5 to 1.0, tryptophan; and R > 1.8. ionized tyrosine. Tlie phenylalanyl chromophore displays a definitive excitation spectrum at shorter wavelengths. For ovotransferrin R = 0.9 and comparison of the full excitation spectra suggests that it contains comparable contributions from both ionized tyrosine and tryptophan side chains. Some difficulties in obtaining reliable excitation spectra are described. An analysis of inner-filtering of incident light reveals that for an absorbance less than 0.8 the excitation spectrum is broadened and flattened compared to the absorption spectrum. At maximum absorbances greater than 0.8 false maxima may appear to both sides of a real maximum. Two spurious maxima in an excitation spectrum were generated in a Tb3+ complex and compared to the correct excitation spectrum of the same complex obtained at lower absorbance.  相似文献

The geotropic orientation of caterpillars of Malacosoma americana during progression upon a surface inclined at angle α to the horizontal is such that the path makes an average angle θ upward on the plane, of a magnitude proportional to log sin α. More precisely, the product (sin α) (sin θ) is constant. This is traced to the fluctuation of the pull of the head region upon the lateral musculature of the upper side during the side to side swinging implicated in progression.  相似文献

Over the last few decades considerable effort has been devoted to research of leaf adaptations to environmental conditions. Many studies have reported strong differences in leaf mass per unit area (LMA) within a single tree depending on the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) incident on different locations in the crown. There are fewer studies, however, of the effects of differences in the timing of light incidence during the day on different crown orientations.Leaves from isolated trees of Quercus suber and Quercus ilex in a cold Mediterranean climate were sampled to analyze differences in LMA and other leaf traits among different crown orientations. Gas-exchange rates, leaf water potentials, leaf temperatures and PPFD incident on leaf surfaces in different crown orientations were also measured throughout one entire summer day for each species.Mean daily PPFD values were similar for the leaves from the eastern and western sides of the canopy. On the western side, PPFD reached maximum values during the afternoon. Maximum leaf temperatures were approximately 10–20% higher on the west side, whereas minimum leaf water potentials were between 10 and 24% higher on the east side. Maximum transpiration rates were approximately 22% greater on the west, because of the greater leaf-to-air vapor pressure deficits (LAVPD). Mean individual leaf area was around 10% larger on the east than on the west side of the trees. In contrast, there were no significant differences in LMA between east and west sides of the crown.Contrary to our expectations, more severe water stress on the west side did not result in increases in LMA, although it was associated with lower individual leaf area. We conclude that increases in LMA measured by other authors along gradients of water stress would be due to differences in light intensity between dry and humid sites.  相似文献

A method is described which measures the excitation of Agriolimax by light, during the progress of light adaptation, by assuming that the orientating effect of continuous excitation is expressed as a directly proportionate tension difference in the orienting muscles of the two sides of the body. The tendency toward establishment of such a tension difference is caused to work against a similar geotropic effect at right angles to the phototropic one. This enables one to study the kinetics of light adaptation, and of dark adaptation as well. The situation in the receptors is adequately described by the paradigm See PDF for Equation similar to that derived by Hecht for the differential sensitivity of various forms, but with the difference that the "dark" reaction is not only "bimolecular" but also autocatalysed by the reaction product S. The progress of dark adaptation is reflected (1) in the recovery of the amplitude of the orientation and (2) in the rates of light adaptation at different levels of the recovery; each independently supports these assumptions, for which the necessary equations have been provided. These equations also account for the relative variabilities of the angles of orientation, and, more significantly, for the two quite different kinds of curves of dark adaptation which are obtained in slightly different types of tests.  相似文献
