Superficial (0 to 2 cm) sediments were sampled from 62 sites in Kattegat and Skagerrak during autumn 1989 and spring 1990, tested for toxicity to Daphnia magna and Nitocra spinipes (Crustacea) and analyzed for heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, N, Pb, Zn), nutrients (N and P) and organic carbon. Whole sediment toxicity to Nitocra spinipes, expressed as 96-h LC50, ranged from 1.8 to > > 32 percent sediment (wet wt), which is equivalent to 0.63 to 53 percent dry wt. Sediment total metal concentrations (mg kg-1 dry wt) ranged from 0.01 to 0.32 for Cd, 8 to 57 for Cr, 3 to 40 for Cu, 0.03 to 0.86 for Hg, 3 to 43 for Ni, 6 to 37 for Pb and 21 to 156 for Zn. Analyzed concentrations of heavy metals were tested for correlation with whole sediment toxicity normalized to dry wt, and significant correlations (Spearman p<0.05) were found for Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, and Ni. However, the analyzed concentrations of these metals were below the spiked sediment toxicity of these heavy metals to N. spinipes, except for Cr and Zn for which analyzed maximum concentrations approached the 96-h spiked sediment LC50s. There was no improvement in correlation between the sum of heavy metal concentrations normalized to their spiked toxic concentrations (Toxic Unit approach) and the whole sediment toxicity. Calculated heavy-metal-derived toxicity based on toxic units and whole sediment toxicity ranged from 0.1 to 24 (mean value 2.3 and SD 4.2). Theoretically, a value of 1.0 would explain whole sediment toxicity from measured metal concentrations using this approach. Thus, in spite of the fact that the total concentrations of the heavy metals were sufficient to cause toxicity based on an additive model for most of these sediments, the observed toxicity of the sediments from Kattegat and Skagerrak could not exclusively be explained by the concentrations of heavy metals, except for Cr and Zn at their maximum concentrations. Therefore, other pollutants than these heavy metals must also be considered as possible sediment toxicants.  相似文献

Daphnia magna is a commonly used test animal in aquatic toxicology.Test procedures for acute and chronic test are described, together with the influence of several variables on their results.The practicability of the methods was checked with four model compounds, viz. 1,1,2-trichloroethane, dieldrin, pentachlorophenol and 3,4-dichloroaniline. Food concentration supplied during subchronic and chronic toxicity tests, is one of the most important factors that might influence the response of test organisms to toxicants. The green microalga Scenedesmus incrassatulus was used as food for the cladoceran Daphnia magna, in a chronic toxicity test with the toxicant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). Test concentrations were 0.625, 1.25, and 2.5 mg l-1 of SDS, equivalent to 1/40, 1/20, and 1/10 of the average 48-h LC50 previously determined. Food concentrations were 9.5, 19, and 38 mg l-1 (dry wt.). Survival and reproduction were recorded, and the data were analyzed using a life-table approach. After 55 days, the main findings were as follows:
1.  Average clutch size decreased as food concentration increased and there was a negative interaction between the toxicant and the algal concentration.
2.  The Net Reproductive Rate (R 0) of the controls fed the lowest food concentration was approximately 10 times higher than the controls fed the highest food concentration.
3.  R 0's for the treatments with SDS fed the lowest food concentration, were 2.5 to 5 times higher than those fed the highest food concentration.
4.  Reproduction in controls and treatments with the same SDS concentrations, became similar as food level increased.
According to these results, the food concentration to be supplied in chronic toxicity tests should be accurate, as an incorrect food concentration might negatively affect the survival and reproduction of test organisms, thus masking or confounding the effects of the toxicant being examined. A concentration around 10 mg l-1 (dry wt.) of S. incrassatulus seems to be appropriate for D. magna economic toxicity tests.  相似文献

Sediment and seston oxygen consumption rates below the sharp halocline in the south-eastern part of the shallow Kattegat were measured and compared to calculated rates of carbon addition through the halocline. The mean rate of decrease in deep-water oxygen concentrations between March and September 1988 was 1.0 ml O2 M–3 h–1. Measurements of benthic oxygen uptake using laboratory-incubated sediment cores from depths 30 m gave a mean value of 7.8 ml O2 m–2 h–1. Below-halocline water (from 20 m, 30 m and 1 m above bottom) incubated in bottles showed oxygen consumption rates varying from 0.5 ml O2 m –3 h–1 in March to 2.8 ml O2 M–3 h-1 in late August. The sum of benthic and deep-water oxygen consumption was equivalent to a mean oxygen decrease rate of 1.7 ml O2 m–3 h–1 below the halocline. Of the total oxygen consumption below the halocline 65% was due to oxygen up-take in the water and 35% was due to benthic oxygen consumption. The sum of oxygen consumption measured in sediment cores and in bottles corresponds to a carbon utilisation of 80.1 g C m–2 (respiratory quotient (RQ), assumed 1.0 and 1.4 for water and sediment, respectively), while the decrease in deep-water oxygen concentration was equivalent to 43.0 g C m–2 (RQ assumed = 1.0). Using published values for the external N loading (including deep-water supply), 15NO3-uptake, 14CO2-uptake in combination with % 15NO3-uptake of total 15N-uptake (nitrate, ammonia and urea) and a Redfield C/N ratio of 6.6, rates of carbon addition (new or export production) through the halocline were calculated to 31.9, 46.7 and 36.3 g C m–2, respectively, with a mean value of 38.3 g C m–2 for the 8 month period March–September. This is somewhat less than the value (50.5 g C m–2) calculated from a published empirical relationship between total and export production. The fact that the calculated carbon addition through the halocline was appreciably less than the carbon equivalent of the measured below-halocline respiration may be an effect of sediment focusing (horizontal transport of sedimenting material to deeper areas), since the bottom area below the halocline is much smaller than the total area of the Kattegat. A lower observed decrease in the oxygen concentration below the halocline compared to the sum of measured sediment and deep-water oxygen consumption on the other hand indicates oxygen supply to below-halocline waters through advection and/or vertical entrainment.  相似文献

The toxicity of deltamethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide, was determined under standardized conditions (ISO, 1982) in neonates and juveniles of Daphnia magna. Neonates (6 to 24 h old) were more sensitive than juveniles (48 to 72 h old). The 24- and 48-h EC50s (immobilization) in neonates were 0.113 and 0.031 µg l–1, respectively. The toxicity of deltamethrin was highly toxic. The 96-h EC50 was in the ppt (µg l–1) range. Toxicity tests with Daphnia may be used to detect toxic residues in water and sediment in areas treated with deltamethrin and other highly toxic pyrethroid pesticides.  相似文献

The effects of mineral salts constituting water hardness on fecundity ofDaphnia magna were assessed. Of the salts tested, increased concentrations of NaHCO3 and MgSO4 had no effect on fecundity, CaSO4 significantly increased fecundity, and KCl significantly reduced fecundity. The number of offspring produced per daphnid was correlative to the CaSO4 concentration at CaSO4 concentrations between 91 and 2100 mg/ℓ. The effects of CaSO4 on daphnid fecundity could influence the interpretive outcome of industrial wastewater toxicity tests using this species when the waste and dilution waters contain different concentrations of CaSO4. It is recommended that when performing these tests, dilution water be sampled at the intake site of the industry's water source, thus assuring initial comparability of the waste and dilution waters. The CaSO4 content of the water prior to and after industrial use should be determined to identify any alterations of CaSO4 concentration during use. Identification of CaSO4 concentration differences can aid in the interpretation of effects associated with the wastewater.  相似文献

Two chronic toxicity experiments were conducted with Daphnia magna. In a semi-static experiment with cohorts, the no effect level for bromide in respect of the intrinsic rate of natural increase (derived from age-specific survival and fecundity) was 10 mg l–1. A second test was started with small populations in an intermittent-flow system. These populations had a stable age distribution, were composed of cohorts of different ages, and showed an almost perfect logistic growth. Model calculations showed that bromide reduced the upper numerical limit (carrying capacity). It also increased the time-lag required to attain the maximum reproduction rate. For the first parameter, a no effect level of 14 mg l–1 was calculated. For the latter a threshold could not be detected. The EC50 and EC10 were 27 and 18 mg l–1, respectively. Additional experiments showed that individual growth of D. magna in time could also be described by a logistic equation. The age structure of the populations changed when food became limiting. This was parallelled by a reduction of the mean brood size. In conclusion it is stated that the results of the toxicity studies with populations support Halbach's view (1984), that population dynamics can be used like a magnifying glass to detect small sublethal ecotoxicological effects of environmental pollutants.  相似文献

Sediments from four lakes polluted by effuents from steel industries and from two reference lakes were investigated. The sediments contained elevated concentrations of oil, Pb, Cd, Hg, Zn, Ni and Cr in different combinations. The toxicity of the polluted sediments to Daphnia was much higher than reported elsewhere (24-h LC50 0.5–1.5 vol%). Tubifex survived more than 3 months in the polluted sediments, but growth and reproduction were inhibited.  相似文献

The Alkor-Deep (140 m), which forms part of a depression system in the northern Kattegat channel east of the island of Læsø (Denmark), is the location of a self sustaining population of Northern krill, Meganyctiphanes norvegica (Euphausiacea). This population is exposed to one of the most pronounced thermal gradients within the distributional range of this pelagic crustacean. During summer, the temperature of the water column ranges between 4 and 6 in the deep to 16 °C near the surface which results in the krill being exposed to temperature differences of 8–10 °C during diel vertical migration. Oxygen consumption rates were used to investigate the physiological adaptation of the animal to such gradients in temperature. The rates were found to increase exponentially from 31 mol O2 h-1 gdw -1 at 4 °C to 72 mol O2 h-1 gdw -1 at 16 °C, giving a Q 10-value of 2.0, and indicating that physiological adaptation to varying thermal conditions does not take place. Behavioural adaptations are discussed which may help the krill to cope with large temperature gradients in their environment.  相似文献

The River Kolbäcksån system is located in a historical mining and steel works district of central Sweden. Ten years ago, intensive limnological studies indicated that the sediments in many of the lakes of this system were contaminated with metals and oil (grease). More recently a very high toxicity was found in the sediments from some of these lakes in tests with Daphnia magna and Tubifex tubifex. The objective of this study was to determine the toxicity to Daphnia magna of surficial sediments from representative locations (N = 39) within this system of lakes and to look for possible correlations with concentrations of metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn) and oil (total) analysed in parallel samples. These results were also compared with spiked sediment toxicity data generated for these metals and with the bottom fauna at 8 of the 39 locations. Among the metals analyzed, only Cd, Pb and Zn were correlated with whole sediment toxicity. Only for Zn and Cr did the maximum concentrations approach those that were toxic in the spiked sediments. Correlations using single and combined metal contamination and toxicity (additive models) explained 16% of the sediment toxicity (r 2 = 0.16; N = 39). Significant correlations with the bottom fauna in situ (gross abundance, biomass and species richness) were found for whole sediment toxicity, but not for metal contamination (N = 8). The use of the sediment quality triad approach for assessment of sediment quality is exemplified with a numerical normalization procedure for the latter 8 sites.  相似文献

Biomanipulation, through the reduction of fish abundance resulting in an increase of large filter feeders and a stronger top-down control on algae, is commonly used as a lake restoration tool in eutrophic lakes. However, cyanobacteria, often found in eutrophic ponds, can influence the grazing capacity of filter feeding zooplankton. We performed grazing experiments in hypertrophic Lake Blankaart during two consecutive summers (1998, with and 1999, without cyanobacteria) to elucidate the influence of cyanobacteria on the grazing pressure of zooplankton communities. We compared the grazing pressure of the natural macrozooplankton community (mainly small to medium-sized cladocerans and copepods) with that of large Daphnia magna on the natural bacterioplankton and phytoplankton prey communities. Our results showed that in the absence of cyanobacteria, Daphnia magna grazing pressure on bacteria was higher compared to the grazing pressure of the natural zooplankton community. However, Daphnia grazing rates on phytoplankton were not significantly different compared to the grazing rates of the natural zooplankton community. When cyanobacteria were abundant, grazing pressure of Daphnia magnaseemed to be inhibited, and the grazing pressure on bacteria and phytoplankton was similar to that of the natural macrozooplankton community. Our results suggest that biomanipulation may not always result in a more effective top-down control of the algal biomass.  相似文献

Primary production in coastal waters is generally nitrogen-limited due to efficient nitrogen sink pathways, which therefore limit further eutrophication. In this context, the significance of ephemeral mud blankets at shallow depth has been characterised using a simple computational box model. Bed materials from several synoptic grab-sample surveys in Laholmsbukten, a shallow embayment of the Kattegat Sea, were analysed. Sediment trap and current meter data provided an assessment of fine material transport; the frequency of loose mud resuspension was estimated to vary between three and ten events per month in the spring, depending on the wind conditions.Mud blankets appear to be deposited following major spring and fall phytoplankton blooms, they are only a few centimetres thick, they are composed mainly of pelletized organic material and detritus and they have a high water content (80% wet weight) and nitrogen content (0.5% dry weight). In the course of export from the bay, the muds undergo continuous resuspension, redeposition and biological breakdown. In one September day, the amount of particulate nitrogen redeposited in sediment traps was of equivalent magnitude to the entire mud blanket deposit (5 g N/m-2 or a 4 mm deposit as a bay-wide mean). The presence of mud blankets is believe to control the nitrogen budget and water quality in the bay. A simple model proved compatible with observed mud blanket presence and rates of denitrification. Calm conditions are conducive to the loss of bound nitrogen and free oxygen within the bay as a result of prolonged denitrification and pelagic and benthic nitrogen regeneration. If fine particulates are rapidly exported from shallow bottoms, as in windy periods, the water quality of the entire Kattegat Sea is likely to be impaired.  相似文献

Laboratory microcosms were used to compare the effects of the littoral ostracod Cypridopsis vidua and the planktonic cladoceran Daphnia magna on community structure and metabolism. Filter-feeding by cladocerans, both in the presence and absence of ostracods, greatly reduced the abundance of planktonic algae when D. magna reached peak density around day 50; rotifers and euglenids were then limited to flocculent matter on the container bottom. Both net production and community respiration rates decreased as community composition changed. Microcosms containing ostracods as the only microcrustacean showed little reduction in total algal numbers but the otherwise dominant alga, Scenedesmus spp., was replaced by Ankistrodesmus spp. when peak ostracod density was reached around day 100. Rotifers were completely eliminated but euglenids were able to coexist with ostracods. Ostracods impacted community metabolism less than cladocerans, but depressed respiration slightly more than net production.  相似文献

The distribution of Daphniaspecies in tropical Africa is poorly known and understood. Daphniaare assumed rare in tropical regions, but systematic studies covering large areas are sparse. We sampled the active community (live zooplankton) and/or the dormant community (diapausing egg banks in the sediment) of 41 standing water bodies in Kenya in search for Daphnia.Overall the dormant communities yielded 11 species of Daphnia, a species richness more than twice the species richness found in the active communities. Dormant community species diversity better reflects the spatial, and particularly the temporal (multi-annual) variation in environmental conditions available to Daphniain these tropical standing waters. Hence, we suggest that the dormant community be taken into account when assessing local zooplankton diversity, especially in fluctuating tropical lake ecosystems, where the presence of each local Daphniaspecies in the active community may be strongly seasonal or erratic. Geographic distribution data from this study are supplemented with previous records of Daphniain East Africa to provide an overview of the known distribution of Daphniain Kenya and neighbouring countries. We also present a detailed key for morphological identification of the ephippia of the 11 Daphniaspecies encountered, complemented with photographs and drawings of diagnostic characters.  相似文献

Using a cloning technique, we revealed the existence of three phototactically distinct types in Daphnia magna, viz. negatives, positives, and gipsies. The latter migrate continuously between a low and a high light intensity. The expression of this behaviour is genetically determined, although positives and negatives can reversibly switch into gipsies.It is proposed that two opposite genotypes exist, with the gipsy behaviour epigenetically induced. All juveniles behave more or less uniformly, irrespective of their origin. The phototactic responses develop rather late during ontogenesis.  相似文献

Employingin situ enclosures containing inocula of the lake zooplankton (mainlyDaphnia galeata, Daphnia cucullata andBosmina spp.) from a moderately eutrophic Lake Ros (Northern Poland) or large-bodiedDaphina magna, the following observations on succession of phytoplankton were made: 1) whereasD. magna could control the density of all the photoplankton size classes, the lake zooplankton could not suppress the large-sized phytoplankters or net phytoplankton; 2) the lake zooplankton was able to control the density of small algae (< 50μm), but its effect on large algae may be opposite: a promotion of net phytoplankton growth by removing small-sized algae which can out-compete net phytoplankton for limited PO4-P resources (<5μg P l−1). Since efficiency of phytoplankton density control byD. magna decreased with an increase in net phytoplankton abundance, biomanipulation could not be successful without introducing or maintaining a high population of large-bodied cladoceran species before high densities of large algae would make the control of phytoplankton inefficient.  相似文献

Beat-to-beat measurements with 30 micro-seconds accuracy were carried out in order to determine the chronotropic effects on the heart ofDaphnia magna induced by adrenoceptor agonists and antagonists dissolved in water. Agonists and antagonists were either ineffective or lowered the heart frequency (P < 0.05). In addition, the negative chronotropic effect of the agonist epinephrine could not be blocked by the antagonist propranolol. Water from a hypertrophic lake rich in filamentous blue-green algae was passed through a continuous-flow system of aquaria containing Daphnia magna, and a control system without Daphnia. Daphnia caused a significant decrease in the blue-green algal density, and a two-fold reduction in filament length. It is suggested that feeding activity of Daphnia may result in an increase in the availability of blue-green filaments to filter-feeding cladocerans.  相似文献

Daphnia magna was cultured with two different techniques at sublethal nickel concentrations from 0 up to 200 µg Ni l-1. The results of the experiments run with cohorts of single individuals in static cultures were compared with the results obtained with populations held in flow through cultures. The most sensitive demographic parameters in cohorts were life span, the total number of progeny and the achievable maximum body length. The investigated nickel concentrations lowered the mean animal density in populations. Size class distribution was affected and the oscillation of the percentage of ovigorous adults increased with increasing nickel concentrations. In 200 µg Ni l-1 one population extincted. Individuals in static cultures exposed to the same nickel concentration produced at least two neonates. Both employed techniques are discussed.  相似文献
