Rechargeable Li–S batteries are regarded as one of the most promising next‐generation energy‐storage systems. However, the inevitable formation of Li dendrites and the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides significantly weakens electrochemical performance, preventing its practical application. Herein, a new class of localized high‐concentration electrolyte (LHCE) enabled by adding inert fluoroalkyl ether of 1H,1H,5H‐octafluoropentyl‐1,1,2,2‐tetrafluoroethyl ether into highly‐concentrated electrolytes (HCE) lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide/dimethoxyether (DME) system is reported to suppress Li dendrite formation and minimize the solubility of the high‐order polysulfides in electrolytes, thus reducing the amount of electrolyte in cells. Such a unique LHCE can achieve a high coulombic efficiency of Li plating/stripping up to 99.3% and completely suppressing the shuttling effect, thus maintaining a S cathode capacity of 775 mAh g?1 for 150 cycles with a lean electrolyte of 4.56 g A?1 h?1. The LHCE reduces the solubility of lithium polysulfides, allowing the Li/S cell to achieve super performance in a lean electrolyte. This conception of using inert diluents in a highly concentrated electrolyte can accelerate commercialization of Li–S battery technology.  相似文献

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have attracted increasing attention due to their extremely high theoretical specific capacity and a promising power density. However, practical applications of Li–S batteries are still limited by the relatively low performance, owing to poor conductivity of sulfur itself and discharge products (Li2S/Li2S2) as well as the shuttle effect of the intermediate polysulfide. Herein, honeycomb‐like mesoporous Co, N‐doped carbon nanosheets (MC‐NS) with a high specific surface area and abundant defects are developed which, simultaneously enable polysulfide confinement and highly efficient conversion. Moreover, density functional theory calculations and experiments show that the Co‐N‐C catalytic site as well as defects on the carbon skeleton of the MC‐NS facilitate high efficiency in suppressing the shuttle effect of polysulfides. In situ Raman spectra further demonstrate the enhancement of adsorption ability and conversion efficiency of polysulfides on this host. As a result, the MC‐NS enables much increased specific capacity and cycling stability of Li–S batteries. This work provides a useful strategy for realizing practical applications of high‐performance Li–S batteries.  相似文献

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are being considered as one of the most promising candidates for the development of next‐generation energy storage technologies. Although much progress has been made over the past decade, the development of Li–S batteries is still held back by a crucial polysulfide‐shuttle problem. To address this critical issue, an approach to reduce the pore size of the separator is presented here, to prevent the penetration of soluble polysulfide species. A polymer with intrinsic nanoporosity (PIN) is developed within the micrometer‐scale pores of a polypropylene separator. The framework of polypropylene acts as a skeleton to sustain reliable mechanical properties with the thin membrane. Upon the formation of PIN in the pores, the polypropylene separator maintains its thickness. With the thin PIN–polypropylene membrane, the Li–S cells can be operated with a relatively high sulfur loading. The PIN allows the transport of Li+ ions, but suppresses the penetration of the polysulfide species. The Li–S batteries with the PIN‐modified polypropylene separator exhibit enhanced cycling performance.  相似文献

The practical viability of Li–S cells depends on achieving high electrochemical utilization of sulfur under realistic conditions, such as high sulfur loading and low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio. Here, metallic 2D 1T′‐ReS2 nanosheets in situ grown on 1D carbon nanotubes (ReS2@CNT) via a facile hydrothermal reaction are presented to efficiently suppress the “polysulfide shuttle” and promote lithium polysulfide (LiPS) redox reactions. The designed ReS2@CNT nanoarchitecture with high conductivity and rich nanoporosity not only facilitates electron transfer and ion diffusion, but also possesses abundant active sites providing high catalytic activity for efficient LiPS conversion. Li–S cells fabricated with ReS2@CNT exhibit high capacity with superior long‐term cyclability with a capacity retention of 71.7% over 1000 cycles even at a high current density of 1C (1675 mA g?1). Also, pouch cells fabricated with the ReS2@CNT/S cathode maintain a low capacity fade rate of 0.22% per cycle. Furthermore, the electrocatalysis mechanism is revealed based on electrochemical studies, theoretical calculations, and in situ Raman spectroscopy.  相似文献

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are currently considered as promising candidates for next‐generation energy storage technologies. However, their practical application is hindered by the critical issue of the polysulfide‐shuttle. Herein, a metal organic framework (MOF)‐derived solid electrolyte is presented to address it. The MOF solid electrolyte is developed based on a Universitetet i Oslo (UIO) structure. By grafting a lithium sulfonate (‐SO3Li) group to the UIO ligand, both the ionic conductivity and the polysulfide‐suppression capability of the resulting ‐SO3Li grafted UIO (UIOSLi) solid electrolyte are greatly improved. After integrating a Li‐based ionic liquid (Li‐IL), lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide in 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, the resulting Li‐IL/UIOSLi solid electrolyte exhibits an ionic conductivity of 3.3 × 10?4 S cm?1 at room temperature. Based on its unique structure, the Li‐IL/UIOSLi solid electrolyte effectively restrains the polysulfide shuttle and suppresses lithium dendritic growth. Lithium–sulfur cells with the Li‐IL/UIOSLi solid electrolyte and a Li2S6 catholyte show stable cycling performance that preserves 84% of the initial capacity after 250 cycles with a capacity‐fade rate of 0.06% per cycle.  相似文献

A NaSICON‐type Li+‐ion conductive membrane with a formula of Li1+ x Y x Zr2? x (PO4)3 (LYZP) (x = 0–0.15) has been explored as a solid‐electrolyte/separator to suppress polysulfide‐crossover in lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries. The LYZP membrane with a reasonable Li+‐ion conductivity shows both favorable chemical compatibility with the lithium polysulfide species and exhibits good electrochemical stability under the operating conditions of the Li‐S batteries. Through an integration of the LYZP solid electrolyte with the liquid electrolyte, the hybrid Li‐S batteries show greatly enhanced cyclability in contrast to the conventional Li‐S batteries with the porous polymer (e.g., Celgard) separator. At a rate of C/5, the hybrid Li ||LYZP|| Li2S6 batteries developed in this study (with a Li‐metal anode, a liquid/LYZP hybrid electrolyte, and a dissolved lithium polysulfide cathode) delivers an initial discharge capacity of ≈1000 mA h g?1 (based on the active sulfur material) and retains ≈90% of the initial capacity after 150 cycles with a low capacity fade‐rate of <0.07% per cycle.  相似文献

Sulfur electrodes confined in an inert carbon matrix show practical limitations and concerns related to low cathode density. As a result, these electrodes require a large amount of electrolyte, normally three times more than the volume used in commercial Li‐ion batteries. Herein, a high‐energy and high‐performance lithium–sulfur battery concept, designed to achieve high practical capacity with minimum volume of electrolyte is proposed. It is based on deposition of polysulfide species on a self‐standing and highly conductive carbon nanofiber network, thus eliminating the need for a binder and current collector, resulting in high active material loading. The fiber network has a functionalized surface with the presence of polar oxygen groups, with the aim to prevent polysulfide migration to the lithium anode during the electrochemical process, by the formation of S–O species. Owing to the high sulfur loading (6 mg cm?2) and a reduced free volume of the sulfide/fiber electrode, the Li–S cell is designed to work with as little as 10 µL cm?2 of electrolyte. With this design the cell has a high energy density of 450 Wh kg?1, a lifetime of more than 400 cycles, and the possibility of low cost, by use of abundant and eco‐friendly materials.  相似文献

Despite the outstanding gravimetric performance of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, their practical volumetric energy density is normally lower than that of lithium‐ion batteries, mainly due to the low density of nanostructured sulfur as well as the porous carbon hosts. Here, a novel approach is developed to fabricate high‐density graphene bulk materials with “ink‐bottle‐like” mesopores by phosphoric acid (H3PO4) activation. These pores can effectively confine the polysulfides due to their unique structure with a wide body and narrow neck, which shows only a 0.05% capacity fade per cycle for 500 cycles (75% capacity retention) for accommodating polysulfides. With a density of 1.16 g cm?3, a hybrid cathode containing 54 wt% sulfur delivers a high volumetric capacity of 653 mA h cm?3. As a result, a device‐level volumetric energy density as high as 408 W h L?1 is achieved with a cathode thickness of 100 µm. This is a periodic yet practical advance to improve the volumetric performance of Li–S batteries from a device perspective. This work suggests a design principle for the real use Li–S batteries although there is a long way ahead to bridge the gap between Li–S batteries and Li–ion batteries in volumetric performance.  相似文献

The lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery is widely regarded as a promising energy storage device due to its low price and the high earth‐abundance of the materials employed. However, the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and sluggish redox conversion result in inefficient sulfur utilization, low power density, and rapid electrode deterioration. Herein, these challenges are addressed with two strategies 1) increasing LiPS conversion kinetics through catalysis, and 2) alleviating the shuttle effect by enhanced trapping and adsorption of LiPSs. These improvements are achieved by constructing double‐shelled hollow nanocages decorated with a cobalt nitride catalyst. The N‐doped hollow inner carbon shell not only serves as a physiochemical absorber for LiPSs, but also improves the electrical conductivity of the electrode; significantly suppressing shuttle effect. Cobalt nitride (Co4N) nanoparticles, embedded in nitrogen‐doped carbon in the outer shell, catalyze the conversion of LiPSs, leading to decreased polarization and fast kinetics during cycling. Theoretical study of the Li intercalation energetics confirms the improved catalytic activity of the Co4N compared to metallic Co catalyst. Altogether, the electrode shows large reversible capacity (1242 mAh g?1 at 0.1 C), robust stability (capacity retention of 658 mAh g?1 at 5 C after 400 cycles), and superior cycling stability at high sulfur loading (4.5 mg cm?2).  相似文献

With a high theoretical capacity of 1162 mA h g?1, Li2S is a promising cathode that can couple with silicon, tin, or graphite anodes for next‐generation energy storage devices. Unfortunately, Li2S is highly insulating, exhibits large charge overpotential, and suffers from active‐material loss as soluble polysulfides during battery cycling. To date, low‐cost, scalable synthesis of an electrochemically active Li2S cathode remains a challenge. This work demonstrates that the low conductivity and material loss issues associated with Li2S cathodes can be overcome by forming a stable, conductive encapsulation layer at the surface of the Li2S bulk particles through in situ surface reactions between Li2S and electrolyte additives containing transition‐metal salts. It is identified that the electronic band structure in the valence band region of the thus‐generated encapsulation layers, consisting largely of transition‐metal sulfides, determines the initial charging resistance of Li2S. Furthermore, among the transition metals tested, the encapsulation layer formed with an addition of 10 wt% manganese (II) acetylacetonate salt proved to be robust within the cycling window, which is attributed to the chemically generated MnS surface species. This work provides an effective strategy to use micrometer‐sized Li2S directly as a cathode material and opens up new prospects to tune the surface properties of electrode materials for energy‐storage applications.  相似文献

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries hold great promise as a next‐generation battery system because of their extremely high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, ready lithium polysulfide (LiPS) diffusion and sluggish redox kinetics hamper their cyclability and rate capability. Herein, porphyrin‐derived graphene‐based nanosheets (PNG) are proposed for Li–S batteries, which are achieved by pyrolyzing a conformal and thin layer of 2D porphyrin organic framework on graphene to form carbon nanosheets with a spatially engineered nitrogen‐dopant‐enriched skin and a highly conductive skeleton. The atomic skin is decorated with fully exposed lithiophilic sites to afford strong chemisorption to LiPSs and improve electrolyte wettability, while graphene substrate provides speedy electron transport to facilitate redox kinetics of sulfur species. The use of PNG as a lightweight interlayer enables efficient operation of Li–S batteries in terms of superb cycle stability (cyclic decay rate of 0.099% during 300 cycles at 0.5 C), good rate capability (988 mAh g?1 at 2.0 C), and impressive sulfur loading (areal capacity of 8.81 mAh cm?2 at a sulfur loading of 8.9 mg cm?2). The distinct interfacial strategy is expected to apply to other conversion reaction batteries relying on dissolution–precipitation mechanisms and requiring interfacial charge‐ and mass‐transport‐mediation concurrently.  相似文献

As a primary component in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, the separator may require a custom design in order to facilitate electrochemical stability and reversibility. Here, a custom separator with an activated carbon nanofiber (ACNF)‐filter coated onto a polypropylene membrane is presented. The entire configuration is comprised of the ACNF filter arranged adjacent to the sulfur cathode so that it can filter out the freely migrating polysulfides and suppress the severe polysulfide diffusion. Four differently optimized ACNF‐filter‐coated separators have been developed with tunable micropores as an investigation into the electrochemical and engineering design parameters of functionalized separators. The optimized parameters that are verified by electrochemical and microstructural analyses require the coated ACNF filter to possess the following: (i) a porous architecture with abundant micropores, (ii) small micropore sizes, and (iii) high electrical conductivity and effective electrolyte immersion. It is found that the ACNF20‐filter‐coated separator demonstrates an overall superior boost in the electrochemical utilization (discharge capacity: 1270 mA h g?1) and polysulfide retention (capacity fade rate: 0.13% cycle?1 after 200 cycles). These results show that the modified thin‐film‐coating technique is a viable approach to designing ultratough ACNF‐filter‐coated separators with outstanding mechanical strength and flexibility as an advanced component in Li–S cells.  相似文献

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are of great interest due to their high theoretical energy density. However, one of the key issues hindering their real world applications is polysulfide shuttle, which results in severe capacity decay and self‐discharge. Here, a laponite nanosheets/carbon black coated Celgard (LNS/CB‐Celgard) separator to inhibit polysulfide shuttle and to enhance the Li+ conductivity simultaneously is reported. The polysulfide shuttle is efficiently inhibited through strong interactions between the O active sites of the LNS and polysulfides by forming the Li···O and O? S bonds. Moreover, the separator features high Li+ conductivity, fast Li+ diffusion, excellent electrolyte wettability, and high thermal stability. Consequently, the Li–S batteries with the LNS/CB‐Celgard separator and the pure S cathode show a high initial reversible capacity of 1387 mA h g?1 at 0.1 C, high rate performance, superior cycling stability (with a capacity decay rate of 0.06% cycle?1 at 0.2 C and 0.028% cycle?1 at 1.0 C over 500 cycles), and ultralow self‐discharge. The separator could also enhance the performance of other batteries such as the LiFePO4/separator/Li battery. This work sheds a new light on the design and preparation of novel separators for highly stable Li–S batteries via a “green” and cost‐effective approach.  相似文献

The shuttle of polysulfide and severe volume change of sulfur cathodes, are the bottlenecks in the practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries, and need to be solved through further exploration of simple and scalable strategies. Herein, an elastic and conductive coating layer is designed and synthesized, by combining water soluble conducting polymer modified carbon nanotubes (PASANTs) with crosslinked waterborne polyurethane (cWPU). It shows high electronic conductivity and excellent resilience. As a result, a lithium–sulfur battery with cWPU/PASANTs coated cathode is able to achieve an outstanding cycle stability with a capacity of 70.8% after 500 cycles at 0.5C and an excellent rate performance (specific capacity of 1130 mAh g?1 at 0.1C and maintain 68.2% at 2C). This work embodies a systematic design concept, which shows the application prospects of large‐scale production, and is expected to be further applied to other easily pulverized high‐specific‐capacity materials such as silicon and tin.  相似文献

The development of lithium–sulfur batteries is limited by the poor conductivity of sulfur cathodes and soluble long‐chain lithium polysulfides (LPSs), which cause the low utilization of sulfur and the aversive shuttle effect, and further, give rise to self‐discharge, rapid reversible capacity fading, and low Coulombic efficiency. In this work, a novel configuration is built for high‐performance lithium–organosulfur batteries, in which the organosulfur hybrid material and lithium metal are used as the cathode and the anode, respectively, and are separated by a functional separator decorated with nitrogen and sulfur co‐doped reduced graphite oxide. The organosulfur in the cathode prevents the shuttle effect by inhibiting the formation of long‐chain LPSs. In addition, the functional separator effectively adsorbs LPSs escaping from the cathode by electrostatic interactions and further restrains the shuttle effect. These effects are confirmed by density‐functional theory calculations. As a result, this novel configuration provides a high initial discharge capacity of 1364 mAh g?1 at 0.2 C and a high discharge capacity of 750 mAh g?1 at 1 C after 700 cycles with a very low capacity decay rate of 0.037% per cycle.  相似文献

Li2S is a fully lithiated sulfur‐based cathode with a high theoretical capacity of 1166 mAh g?1 that can be coupled with lithium‐free anodes to develop high‐energy‐density lithium–sulfur batteries. Although various approaches have been pursued to obtain a high‐performance Li2S cathode, there are still formidable challenges with it (e.g., low conductivity, high overpotential, and irreversible polysulfide diffusion) and associated fabrication processes (e.g., insufficient Li2S, excess electrolyte, and low reversible capacity), which have prevented the realization of high electrochemical utilization and stability. Here, a new cathode design composed of a homogeneous Li2S‐TiS2‐electrolyte composite that is prepared by a simple two‐step dry/wet‐mixing process is demonstrated, allowing the liquid electrolyte to wet the powder mixture consisting of insulating Li2S and conductive TiS2. The close‐contact, three‐phase boundary of this system improves the Li2S‐activation efficiency and provides fast redox‐reaction kinetics, enabling the Li2S‐TiS2‐electrolyte cathode to attain stable cyclability at C/7 to C/3 rates, superior long‐term cyclability over 500 cycles, and promising high‐rate performance up to 1C rate. More importantly, this improved performance results from a cell design attaining a high Li2S loading of 6 mg cm?2, a high Li2S content of 75 wt%, and a low electrolyte/Li2S ratio of 6.  相似文献

A flexible composite solid electrolyte membrane consisting of inorganic solid particles (Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3), polyethylene oxide (PEO), and boronized polyethylene glycol (BPEG) is prepared and investigated. This membrane exhibits good stability against lithium dendrite, which can be attributed to its well‐designed combination components: the compact inorganic lithium ion conducting layer provides the membrane with good mechanical strength and physically barricades the free growth of lithium dendrite; while the addition of planar BPEG oligomers not only disorganizes the crystallinity of the PEO domain, leading to good ionic conductivity, but also facilitates a “soft contact” between interfaces, which not only chemically enables homogeneous lithium plating/stripping on the lithium metal anode, but also reduces the polarization effects. In addition, by employing this membrane to a LiFePO4/Li cell and testing its galvanostatic cycling performances at 60 °C, capacities of 158.2 and 94.2 mA h g?1 are delivered at 0.1 C and 2 C, respectively.  相似文献
