The Eocene age Eckfeld/Eifel maar lake is interesting both because of the excellently preserved fossil remains and also for the laminated sediment sequence deposited under subtropical conditions. The latitude, however, has a higher seasonal insolation difference than comparable recent environments due to the northward shift of climatic zones during the Eocene. The overall aim of this investigation was to compare sediment types and lake development of a Tertiary (subtropical) maar lake with recent maar lakes, to discuss the origin of laminations, and search for their possible periodicities. The main sediment types, which were exposed during recent paleontological excavations, are laminated oilshales, partly laminated bituminous siltstones, and graded beds (mostly turbidites), which sometimes include laminated clay tops. Some deeper parts of the profile drilled in 1980, are dominated by diatomaceous laminites. The amount of organic carbon (around 8.5%) is comparable with recent lakes with low sedimentation rates. The high C/N ratios (25–30) of the Eckfeld sediments, as well as the fact that the highest Corg values are found in the graded beds, shows the importance of terrestrial plant debris for these lake sediments. Lamination of the oil shales was caused by the complex interrelationship of clastic supply (mineral and plant detritus), autochthonous organic deposition (mainly green algae), and early diagenetic siderite formation. The darker sublaminae represent the coarser clastic (organic and inorganic) input together with the autochthonous supply from the lake (green algae), whereas the lighter sublaminae are composed of settled fine-grained, mostly siliciclastic detritus derived from the probable yearly turnover of the density stratification of the lake. The thickness of the fine siliciclastic and organo-clastic layers, the morphology and palaeogeographical situation of the maar lake, and the occurrence of algal layers, strongly suggest that the laminated sediments are varves (although there is no definitive proof of this). Thickness variations from ca. 700 oil shale laminae were measured and computed. Time series analysis yielded at least one certain period of 5.5 yr, accepting that the laminae are indeed varves. The duration of the laminated lake sequence from Eckfeld maar, as deduced from sedimentation rates of the different sediment types is ca. 82,000 yr and, thus, within the typical life time of other small maar lakes.  相似文献

We describe a new macrophyte-based assessment tool for Austrian lakes elaborated according to the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive. Data from 38 out of 45, WFD-relevant (≥50 ha) lakes in Austria collected with the help of a new mapping procedure form the basis for a macrophyte-based lake typology and the definition of reference conditions. Module 1 of the Austrian Index Macrophytes (AIM) focuses on the assessment of trophic state and general impairment of lakes. Several metrics were developed and applied in combination with existing indices to classify lakes into five ecological status classes. The metric “vegetation density” focuses on the overall abundance of macrophytes. Since the lower limit of the macrophyte vegetation in lakes is mainly regulated by the water transparency, the metric “vegetation limit” is closely related to the trophic state of the lake. In deep lakes, macrophytes normally form different vegetation zones. As a result of alteration of the shoreline, artificial water level fluctuations or wave action and even eutrophication, specific zones can be missing. The metric “characteristic zonation” helps to check, if all type-specific vegetation zones are present. The metric “trophic indication” uses the Macrophyte Index after Melzer (Hydrobiologia, 395/396: 181–190, 1999). This term indicates the lake trophic state but, in contrast to the metric “vegetation limit”, it tends to show not only the trophic state of the water column but also, in particular, the nutrient conditions in the sediment. With the help of the metric “species composition,” the species spectrum and the species abundances of the current transect are compared with the species composition at reference sites. The similarity of the datasets is measured as Bray–Curtis Distance (Beals, Advances in Ecological Research, 14: 1–55, 1984). The established metrics cover different aspects of macrophyte vegetation and allow analysing the prevailing pressure. Since the different metrics have a different temporal response to eutrophication and reoligotrophication, additional information on the current state of the lake in relation to these processes can be derived. Plant establishment on sites affected by major volcanic disturbances is limited by several factors, such as lack of suitable microsites for germination and establishment in sites affected by tephra from volcanic eruptions. Even after long periods of time, tephra deposited over un-vegetated areas (agricultural fields and other barren areas) lack closed vegetation cover and in many cases late successional species. To assess limiting factors for plant establishment, a field survey in a tephra deposit from the Paricutin volcano eruption (19°30′42.4′′ N, 102°12′03.0′′) and greenhouse experiments were carried out. The field survey determined the relationship between tephra depth and vegetation distribution. Greenhouse experiments determined the effect of tephra depth on establishment and growth of two dominant species in the tephra deposit surveyed, Eupatorium glabratum and Lupinus elegans. Our results suggest that size and spatial distribution of vegetation patches is related to tephra depth in the field (77% of the vegetation patches were on tephra 38.8 cm deep or less and only 2% on tephra of more than 46.8 cm). Under greenhouse conditions, Eupatorium glabratum and Lupinus elegans height sharply decreased as depth of the tephra layer increased. Lupinus elegans plants growing in tephra less than 30 cm deep had a mean weight of 10.56 g (±0.53 g) compared with 3.11 g (±0.46 g) for plants growing in tephra more than 30 cm deep. Our results suggest that tephra depth is a limiting factor for canopy development in barren areas affected by tephra deposition.  相似文献

An alkaliphilic nonsulfur purple bacterial (NPB) strain “Green” was isolated from sediments of the littoral zone of the soda lake (mineralization 22 g/l, pH 9.5) in the Barguzin River valley (Eastern Siberia). The cells of the new isolate are ovoid or polymorphic at latter stages. The photosynthetic membrane structures are of vesicular type. Bacteriochlorophyll a and carotenoids of both spheroidene and spirilloxanthin type are the photosynthetic pigments. Two light-harvesting systems (LH1 and LH2) are present. The new isolate is a photoheterotroph and a facultative aerobe. It grows well in the dark on organic substrates; anaerobic phototrophic growth is poor. The isolate is alkaliphilic with pH optimum of 8.5–9.5. The most abundant cell growth occurred at 5–40 g/l NaCl (optimum at 10 g/l) and 30 °C. The DNA G+C base content was 69.9 mol %. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed a 10% difference with the most closely related NPB (Rhodobacter species). Rubrimonas cliftoensis, a bacteriochlorophyll a-containing bacterium, is the closest relative (93.3% similarity). It is proposed that strain “Green” should be placed in the new genus and new species Rubribacterium polymorphum gen. nov., sp. nov. GenBank accession number: 16S rRNA-EU857676.  相似文献

We quantified sedimentation of organic carbon in 12 Swedish small boreal lakes (<0.48 km2), which ranged in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from 4.4 to 21.4 mg C l−1. Stable isotope analysis suggests that most of the settling organic matter is of allochthonous origin. Annual sedimentation of allochthonous matter per m2 lake area was correlated to DOC concentration in the water (R 2 = 0.41), and the relationship was improved when sedimentation data were normalized to water depth (R 2 = 0.58). The net efflux of C as CO2 from the water to the atmosphere was likewise correlated to DOC concentration (R 2 = 0.52). The losses of organic carbon from the water column via mineralization to CO2 and via sedimentation were approximately of equal importance throughout the year. Our results imply that DOC is a precursor of the settling matter, resulting in an important pathway in the carbon cycle of boreal lakes. Thus, flocculation of DOC of terrestrial origin and subsequent sedimentation could lead to carbon sequestration by burial in lake sediments.  相似文献

Analysis of new data and reinterpretation of published information for clay minerals found in temperate climate soil profiles indicates that there is often a gradient of “illite-like” clay minerals with depth. We used the term “illite-like” because these observations are based on X-Ray Diffractogram patterns and not on layer charge measurements which allow to define properly illite. It appears that “illite-like” layers are concentrated in the upper, organic - rich portion of the soil profile both under grassland and forest vegetation. “Illite-like” layer quantity seems directly related to soil potassium status. Indeed, intensive agriculture practises without potassium fertilization reduce “illite-like” content in surface soils, whereas several years of potassic fertilization without plant growth can increase “illite-like” content. The potassic soil clay mineral, illite, is particularly important in that it can be the major source of readily available potassium for plants. Spatial and temporal dynamics of clay minerals should be related to the potassium cycle. We propose that the frequently observed general trend of increasing exchangeable potassium in the top soil can be correlated with an increase in “illite-like” in the clays and that the decrease of potassium caused by intensive agricultural practices leads to “illite-like” layer destabilization. This vision of “illite-like” layer as a potassium reservoir refueled by plants and emptied by intensive cropping renews the concept of potassium availability and indicates a need to be discussed as well in natural ecosystems as in cultivated ecosystems.  相似文献

The mating behavior of the rock catfish Silurus lithophilus (Siluriformes: Siluridae), a species endemic to the Lake Biwa system, was observed from May to July in 1989–1994 along the rocky shore of the lake's outlet, the Seta River. The mating behavior of S. lithophilus involved a certain behavioral sequence: “chasing,”“clinging,” and “enfolding” while “squeezing” by the male; and “circling” by the spawned pair. The mating behavior of this species was basically similar to that of S. biwaensis, but greatly different from that of S. asotus, which spawns in running water (in ditches). The mating behavior of S. lithophilus (and S. biwaensis) might have developed as an adaptation to lentic environments such as the shores of the large river or the lake. A dense accumulation of the phototrophic consortium “Pelochromatium roseum” in a small, eutrophic, freshwater lake (Dagowsee, Brandenburg, Germany) was investigated. Within the chemocline, the number of epibionts of the consortia represented up to 19% of the total number of bacteria. Per “P. roseum” a mean value of 20 epibionts was determined. Similar to other aquatic habitats, consortia in the Dagowsee were found only at low light intensities (< 7 μmol quanta m–2 s–1) and low sulfide concentrations (0–100 μM). In dialysis cultures of “P. roseum”, bacterial cells remained in a stable association only when incubated at light intensities between 5 and 10 μmol quanta m–2 s–1. Intact consortia from natural samples had a buoyant density of 1046.8 kg m–3, which was much higher than that of ambient chemocline water (995.8 kg m–3). Under environmental conditions and without motility, this density difference would result in rapid sedimentation of consortia toward the lake bottom. Our results indicate that (1) consortia are adapted to a very narrow regime of light intensities and sulfide concentrations, (2) motility and tactic responses must be of ecological significance for the colonization of the free water column of lakes, and (3) phototrophic growth of consortia can be explained only by a cycling of sulfur species in the chemocline, possibly within the consortia themselves. A novel technique (“bioshrouding”) for safeguarding highly reactive sulfidic mineral tailings deposits is proposed. In this, freshly milled wastes are colonised with ferric iron-reducing heterotrophic acidophilic bacteria that form biofilms on reactive mineral surfaces, thereby preventing or minimising colonisation by iron sulfide-oxidising chemolithotrophs such as Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Leptospirillum spp. Data from initial experiments showed that dissolution of pyrite could be reduced by between 57 and 75% by “bioshrouding” the mineral with three different species of heterotrophic acidophiles (Acidiphilium, Acidocella and Acidobacterium spp.), under conditions that were conducive to microbial oxidative dissolution of the iron sulfide.  相似文献

Two new phototrophic consortia, “Chlorochromatium lunatum” and “Pelochromatium selenoides”, were observed and collected in the hypolimnion of several dimictic lakes in Wisconsin and Michigan (USA). The two consortia had the same morphology but different pigment composition. The cells of the photosynthetic components of the consortia were half-moon-shaped. This morphology was used to differentiate them from the previously described motile phototrophic consortia “Chlorochromatium aggregatum” and “Pelochromatium roseum”. These phototrophic cells did not resemble any described unicellular green sulfur bacteria. The predominant pigments detected were bacteriochlorophyll d and chlorobactene for the green-colored “Clc. lunatum”, and bacteriochlorophyll e and isorenieratene for the brown-colored “Plc. selenoides”. Their pigment compositions and the presence of chlorosomes attached to the inner face of the cytoplasmic membrane in both kinds of photosynthetic cells confirmed this new half-moon-shaped morphotype as a green sulfur bacterium. Both consortia were found thriving in lakes with low concentrations of sulfide (< 60 μM), below the layers of “Clc. aggregatum” and “Plc. roseum”. The green consortia were observed in lakes where the oxic-anoxic interface was located at shallow depths (2–7 m), while the brown consortia were found at greater depths (8–16 m). Urban lakes belong to various groups, for example from “young” to “old” with regard to development, and from “natural” to “anthropogenic” with respect to transformations due to human activity. The majority of these lakes are eutrophic and polytrophic, but special attention should be paid to mesotrophic ones, with relatively unchanged vegetation, with species of the class Charetea, e.g. Lake Redykajny (43.3% of the phytolittoral) or Lake Tyrsko (44.0% of the phytolittoral).  相似文献

The phototrophic consortium “Chlorochromatium aggregatum” was enriched from sediment samples of a eutrophic freshwater lake and was maintained at high numbers in anoxic sulfide-reduced medium. Growth of intact consortia was observed only in the light and in the presence of 2-oxoglutarate as an organic carbon source. Consortia of “C. aggregatum” reached maximum growth rates at light intensities ≥ 5 μmol quanta m–2 s–1. Of ten compounds tested, sulfide, thiosulfate, 2-oxoglutarate, and citrate served as a chemoattractant for “C. aggregatum”. When incubated in the presence of sulfide and in the light, epibionts reduced the fluorochrome 5-cyano-2,3-di-4-tolyl-tetrazolium chloride (CTC). Reduction of CTC was not observed in the presence of the uncoupler carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) or in the dark, indicating that sulfide serves as an electron donor for the phototrophic epibiont. Motile consortia accumulated scotophobically in microcuvettes at a wavelength of 740 nm. Since this wavelength corresponds to the position of the absorption maximum of bacteriochlorophylls c or d, the photosynthetic pigments are most likely the photoreceptors of the scotophobic response. It is concluded that, within the consortia, a rapid interspecies signal transfer occurs between the nonmotile, green-colored epibiont and the motile, colorless central bacterium. We studied organic components in the X106 sediment core (length 130.3 cm, water depth 236 m, 50°53′01″N, 100°21′22″E) from Lake Hovsgol to elucidate the biological production, source of organic components, and paleoenvironmental and paleolimnological changes during the last 27 kyr in northwest Mongolia. Total organic carbon (TOC) contents (0.20–0.70%) in the core of the last glacial period increased dramatically and attained 3.16–5.85% in the postglacial period (Holocene), together with the increase of the contribution of terrestrial organic matter. Biological production (both terrestrial and aquatic production) based on the TOC contents in the Holocene was 14 times higher than that in the last glacial period. The B?lling-Aller?d warm period and Younger Dryas cool period were both observed at depths of 55–50 cm (ca. 15–13 cal kyr BP) and 50–45 cm (ca. 13–11 cal kyr BP), respectively. We propose here a terrestrial/aquatic index (TAI) for organic matter in lake sediments. The TAI values suggest that terrestrial organic matter in the bottom of the core was less than 10%, increased to 48% in the B?lling-Aller?d warm period, decreased abruptly to 20% in the Younger Dryas cool period, and again increased to 30–40% in the Holocene. Normal-C31 alkane (a biomarker of herbaceous land plants) and n-C18 alkanoic acid (marker of plankton) decreased from the last glacial period to the Holocene, whereas n-C23 alkane and n-C22 alkanoic acid (a marker of higher vascular plants) increased from the last glacial period to the Holocene. Scarce herbaceous plant vegetation, such as Artemisia spp. of the lake basin in the last glacial period, changed into an abundance of higher woody plant vegetation (e.g., Pinus spp., Betula spp. and/or Larix spp.) in the Holocene. Stanol/sterol ratios suggest that relatively high oxygen tension of the lake bottom in ca. 27–22 cal kyr BP decreased from this age to the present, though benthic organisms are still abundant.  相似文献

Kaltenrieder P., Tinner W. and Ammann B. 2005. Long-term vegetation history at timberline in the Swiss Alps (Alpe d’Essertse, VS). Bot. Helv. 115: 137–154. Palaeoecological studies in the “Alpe d’Essertse” area have provided much information about vegetation changes and timberline fluctuations during the Holocene. In this study we repeated previous biostratigraphic investigations using plant macrofossils to improve their temporal and taxonomic resolution and to test their reliability. By analyzing 0.5-cm layers of a lake sediment we reached a temporal resolution of 44 years, and we were able to reconstruct vegetation changes in the surrounding area at species level. The sedimentary record analyzed extends from the Late-Glacial to the late Holocene. Alpine grasslands (12’000–11’000 cal. BP) were afforested by Larix decidua, Juniperus nana, and Pinus cembra (11,000–9’600 cal. B.P.). Stable subalpine larch-stone pine-forests (9’600–4’900 cal. BP) were followed by shrublands and meadows as a consequence of the climatically and anthropogenically induced destruction of forest vegetation (4’900–2’600 cal. BP). Changes in the abundance of P. cembra and L. decidua needles as well as changes of the other taxa were consistent with those found in previous studies from the same lake. Our results demonstrate that plant-macrofossil records can be reproduced spatially and temporally on separate cores with independent 14C chronologies.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) W6/32, HC10, and 4E were used to precipitate class I antigens from 21 selected individuals with at least oneHLA-C “blank” allele. In 19 of these individuals, characteristicHLA-C banding patterns which could be precipitated by all three HLA class I mAbs were observed on one-dimensional isoelectric focusing gels-obviously the gene products ofHLA-C “blank”. At least four allelic HLA-C “blank” gene products with different isoelectric points could be discerned. All of them segregated withHLA-C “blank” haplotypes in informative families; two of them were associated withHLA-B51, one withHLA-B38, and one withHLA-B18. Reactivity of the HLA-C “blank” heavy chains with mAb W6/32 indicates that they are able to associated with beta-2 microglobulin, and hence are most probably expressed at the cell surface.  相似文献

The new speciesSaccactis coliumensis is described with an emendation of genusSaccactis lager, 1911 (family Actiniidae). The taxonomic relations of the genus are discussed giving additional information onIsoulactis chilensis Carlgren, 1959 andIsocradactis magna sensu Carlgren, 1924. The terms “verrucae”, “vesicles” and “acrorhagi” are discussed and taxonomically valuated. The anemoneS. coliumensis lives in eutrophicated sediments on the central Chilean shelf that is at least temporarily under the impact of deoxygenated waters from the Peru-Chile-Subsurface-Current. The most conspicuous features of the new species (the ruff of delicate, gill-like vesicles beneath the tentacles and its thick pedal disc ectoderm with small, fragile spirocysts and cilia-like structures) may be considered adaptive in this peculiar habitat.  相似文献

We use a data set of 35 surface pollen samples from lake sediments, moss polsters and top soils on the north-eastern Tibetan Plateau to explore the relationship between modern pollen assemblages and contemporary vegetation patterns. The surface pollen transect spanned four vegetation zones––alpine meadow, steppe, steppe desert and desert––under different climatic/elevational conditions. Relative representation (R rel) values and Principal Components Analysis (PCA) were used to determine the relationships between modern pollen and vegetation and regional climate gradients. The results show that the main vegetation zones along the regional and elevational transects can be distinguished by their modern pollen spectra. Relative to Poaceae, a high representation of Artemisia, Nitraria and Chenopodiaceae was found, while Cyperaceae and Gentiana showed values in the middle range, and Ranunculaceae, Asteraceae, Ephedra and Fabaceae had low relative representation values. PCA results indicate a high correlation between the biogeoclimatic zones and annual precipitation and annual temperature and July temperature. The Artemisia/Chenopodiaceae ratio and the Artemisia/Cyperaceae ratio are useful tools for qualitative and semi-quantitative palaeoenvironmental reconstruction on the north-eastern Tibetan Plateau. Surface lake sediments are found to have different palynomorph spectra from moss cushion and soil samples, reflecting the larger pollen source area in the contemporary vegetation for lakes.  相似文献

It has been suggested that the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and vitamin D receptor (VDR) genes as possibly implicated in reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in osteoporosis. The present study investigated the relation of ERα PvuII/XbaI polymorphisms and VDR FokI/TaqI polymorphisms with BMD in Turkish postmenopausal women. Eighty-one osteoporotic and 122 osteopenic postmenopausal women were recruited. For detection of the polymorphisms, polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment lenght polymorphism techniques have been used. BMD was measured at the lumbar spine and hip by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Distributions of ERα (PvuII dbSNP: rs2234693, XbaI dbSNP: rs9340799) and VDR genotypes (FokI dbSNP rs10735810, TaqI dbSNP: rs731236) were similar in study population. Although overall prevalence of osteoporosis had no association with these genotypes, the prevalence of decreased femoral neck BMD values were higher in the subjects with ERα PvuII “PP” and ERα XbaI “XX” genotypes than in those with “Pp/pp” genotypes and “xx” genotype, respectively (P < 0.05). Furthermore, subjects with VDR FokI “FF” genotype had lower BMD values of femoral neck and total hip compared to those with “Ff” genotype (P < 0.05). In the logistic regression analysis, we confirmed the presence of relationships between the VDR FokI “FF” genotypes, BMI ≤ 27.5, age ≥ 55 and the increased risk of femoral neck BMD below 0.8 value in postmenopausal women. The present data suggests that the ERα PvuII/XbaI and VDR FokI polymorphisms may contribute to the determination of bone mineral density in Turkish postmenopausal women.  相似文献

Summary The chief mode of carbonate sedimentation on the Belizean atolls Glovers Reef, Lighthouse Reef and Turneffe Islands is the accumulation of organically-derived particles. Variations in the distribution of the composition and grain-sizes of surface sediments, collected along transects across the atolls, are environmentally controlled. Two major sediment types may be distinguished. (1) Reef and fore reef sediments are dominated by fragments of coral, coralline algae andHalimeda. Mean grain-sizes range from 1–2 mm. (2) Back reef sediments contain more mollusk fragments, more fine-grained sediment (<125 μm) and appear to have fewerHalimeda fragments. In addition, sediments from inner platforms and shallow lagoonal parts of Glovers and Lighthouse Reefs comprise non-skeletal grains, namely fecal pellets. Sediments from lagoonal patch reefs may contain up to 20% coral fragments. Mean grain-sizes range from 0.1–1 mm and are finest on the inner platform and lagoon floor of the back reef environment. Within the reef and fore reef environments, it is not possible to distinguish sub-environments on the basis of textural and compositional differences of the sediments. Sediments from patch reefs contrast with those from back reef lagoons and inner platforms and are similar in terms of grain-sizes and compositions to reef and fore reef surface sediments. Non-skeletal grains forming in shallow parts of the back reef in Glovers and Lighthouse Reefs are interpreted to be indurated by interstitial precipitation of calcium carbonate from warm, supersaturated water flushing the sediment. The lack of hardened non-skeletal particles in the back reef sediments of Turneffe Islands is most probably due to the abundance of muddy, organic-rich sediment in the well-protected lagoon. Fine sediment is less permeable and organic films prevent cement overgrowth on particles.  相似文献

Lacustrine stromatolites of the Norian Arnstadt Formation (“Steinmergelkeuper”) occur on top of asymmetric flooding–evaporation cycles of a closed lake basin. They have been investigated with regard to associated lithofacies and biota, microfabric and stable carbon and oxygen isotopes. The stromatolites of the “Middle Grey Series” are brecciated and reworked by a flooding event of a subsequent lake cycle. They comprise agglutinated stromatolites rich in fish scales as well as skeletal stromatolites composed of a rhythmically grown dendroid micropeloidal framework. The latter are characterized by a shift towards positive δ13C values relative to the associated lake carbonates. This points to an effective photosynthesis in biofilm calcification at low concentrations in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in a perennial fresh to brackish water lake. The stromatolites of the “Upper Red Series” occur on top of perennial lake cycles intercalated between playa lake deposits. The fine-grained stromatolites are poor in microfabric characteristics but show a significant covariation of δ18O and δ13C. This points to evaporation/degassing acting as driving mechanism in biofilm calcification. The lack of biotic effects on carbon isotope fractionation may reflect high concentrations in dissolved inorganic carbon. Skeletal oncoids, which occur as allochthonous components within an intraformational lag deposit of the “Upper Red Series”, are composed of cyanobacterial tubes and probably represent lowest saline lakes with only poor DIC buffering. Stable isotope signatures in conjunction with stromatolite microfabric analyses may be used as a proxy of DIC concentrations in ancient closed lakes.  相似文献
