Multiple mating is common in many species, but it is unclear whether multiple paternity enhances offspring genetic diversity or fitness. We conducted a survey on wild house mice (Mus musculus musculus), and we found that in 73 pregnant females, 29% of litters had multiple sires, which is remarkably similar to the 23–26% found in feral populations of Mus musculus domesticus in the USA and Australia, respectively. The question is: How has selection maintained multiple mating in these subspecies since the evolutionary divergence, ca. 2800–6000 years ago? We found no evidence that multiple paternity enhanced females’ litter size, contrary to the fertility assurance or genetic benefits hypotheses. Multiple paternity was associated with reduced mean and variance in offspring body mass, which suggests that females allocate fewer resources or that there is increased intrauterine conflict in multiple-versus single-sired litters. We found increased allelic diversity (though not heterozygosity) in multiple-sired litters, as predicted by the genetic diversity hypothesis. Finally, we found that the dams’ heterozygosity was correlated with the mean heterozygosity of their offspring in single-and multiple-sired litters, suggesting that outbred, heterozygous females were more likely to avoid inbreeding than inbred, homozygous females. Future studies are needed to examine how increased genetic diversity of litters and smaller mean (and variance) offspring body mass associated with multiple paternity affect offspring fitness.  相似文献

HSRs (homogeneously staining regions) are the cytological correlates of DNA amplification. In the house mouse, Mus musculus, many populations are polymorphic for the presence or absence of HSRs on chromosome 1. In the semispecies M. m. domesticus the amplified DNA is present within one HSR, whereas in M. m. musculus chromosomes 1 with two HSRs are found. Hybridization of HSR-specific probes to Southern blots of HSR-carrying genomic DNAs from different localities and semispecies revealed similar complex band patterns. the remaining variation is restricted to sequences with a low degree of amplification. Variation is higher between semispecies than within one semispecies. It is assumed that HSRs are derived from one original amplification event and that unequal recombination is the mechanism underlying the length variation of HSRs present today in both semispecies. Evidence from G-banding and in situ hybridization shows that the two HSRs of M. m. musculus originated from a single HSR by means of a paracentric inversion, where one break-point was located within the single HSR and the second outside the HSR. As a consequence of the paracentric inversion the two HSRs of M. m. musculus are permanently linked together. Since exchange of genes between the two semispecies is restricted to a narrow hybrid zone the amplification that gave rise to the HSR most probably occurred prior to the divergence into the semispecies M. m. domesticus and M. m. musculus about 1 million years ago.by D. Paired adrenals from feral male Mus musculus trapped from fields adjacent to the Memphis (TN) International Airport and from suitable control areas were incubated in the presence or absence of ACTH. Incubation media were assayed fluorometrically for corticosterone. Control animals exhibited lower basal secretion rates of corticosterone when compared to their noise exposed counterparts. However, ACTH elicited a significantly greater increase in corticosterone secretion in controls as compared to the noise exposed group. The data suggest a noise related decline in adrenal cortical responsiveness to ACTH.  相似文献

Genetic divergence between house mouse and gleaner mouse from different regions of Ukraine was estimated by electrophoresis at 26 loci. Four diagnostic loci were established among these species: IDH-1, Est-1,2,4. Genetic distance between species is 0.217, which is in accordance with genetic differences between other species of the genus Mus. The results obtained give evidence that house and gleaner mouse are different species.  相似文献

We report the construction of a small library of recombinant plasmids containing Mus musculus repetitive DNA inserts. The repetitive cloned fraction was derived from denatured genomic DNA by reassociation to a Cot value at which repetitive, but not unique, sequences have reannealed followed by exhaustive S1 nuclease treatment to degrade single stranded DNA. Initial characterizations of this library by colony filter hybridizations have led to the identification of a previously undetected M. musculus minor satellite as well as to clones containing M. musculus major satellite sequences. This new satellite is repeated 10-20 times less than the major satellite in the M. musculus genome. It has a repeat length of 130 nucleotides compared with the M. musculus major satellite with a repeat length of 234 nucleotides. Sequence analysis of the minor satellite has shown that it has a 29 base pair region with extensive homology to one of the major satellite repeating subunits. We also show by in situ hybridization that this minor satellite sequence is located at the centromeres and possibly the arms of at least half the M musculus chromosomes. Sequences related to the minor satellite have been found in the DNA of a related Mus species, Mus spretus, and may represent the major satellite of that species.  相似文献

The House mouse ( Mus musculus L.) population on the small Welsh island of Skokholm was founded in the 1890s when a few animals were inadvertently introduced. It has thrived ever since. The animals breed from late March to early October, during which time the population increases 8–10 fold. Winter survival is related to temperature: the spring population can be as low as 100 individuals after a cold winter; if the winter is warm, so many animals survive that high numbers may occur in the following autumn. There are no resident predators of the mice, and no other small mammals on the island.
The population was sampled on 20 occasions between 1957 and 1972, and genetical changes measured by the incidences of non-metrical skeletal variants (which describe a substantial proportion of the genome) and (from 1968–72) by allele and genotype frequencies of electrophoretically detected genes. Two sorts of changes occurred: an irregular but increasing deviation from the genetical composition of the population at the beginning of the study period, and an annual cycle with frequencies changing in one direction during the breeding season and the opposite direction in the winter. Samples collected in the autumn were more similar to each other than spring caught samples, which conforms with independent evidence about the differing environmental contributors to death in different winters, as compared with general homogeneity of mortality factors during the summers. It is concluded that the genetical composition of the population is largely dependent on natural selection, although the agents and intensity of selection change with both seasons and years.  相似文献

We studied mtDNA introgression across the contact zone between Mus musculus musculus and M. m. domesticus in two independent transects in the Czech Republic and Bavaria, Germany. A total of 1270 mice from 98 localities in the Czech transect and 456 mice from 41 localities in the Bavarian transect were examined for presence or absence of a Bam HI restriction site in the mt-Nd1 gene. Using this simple mtDNA marker, variants that belonged to the M. m. domesticus lineage (presence of restriction site) could be unequivocally distinguished from those belonging to the M. m. musculus lineage (absence of restriction site). The extent of introgression of mtDNA, three autosomal allozymes and the X chromosome was compared. The introgression of X markers was more limited than was that of the allozymes and mtDNA. In the Czech transect, the centre for the mtDNA cline was shifted about 3.6 km to the west relative to the X chromosome cline, with asymmetric introgression from M. m. musculus to M. m. domesticus . Interestingly, in the Bavarian transect, the centre of the mtDNA cline was shifted about 10.9 km to the east relative to the X chromosome cline, with asymmetric introgression from M. m. domesticus to M. m. musculus, opposite in direction to that observed in the Czech transect.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 363–378.  相似文献

The specific activity of erythrocyte enzymes was measured to detect gene mutations in F(1)-offspring of male mice treatment with different doses (80, 160, or 250 mg/kg body weight) of ethylnitrosourea (ENU). Altogether 13,230 offspring were screened for 10 enzyme activities. Mutants with reduced activity as well as mutants with enhanced activity were found. Of the 36 independently observed mutations, 20 were homozygous lethal. Genetic and biochemical characterizations were routinely performed. These mutants provide insight into the mechanism of ENU mutagenesis and can serve as models for structure-function studies of the corresponding enzymes.  相似文献

The effect of optimal stationary harvesting at a constant harvest rate on the dynamics of a two-age population is considered. It has been shown analytically that harvesting a fixed rate of the population size of only one age cohort is optimal. As has been observed, the maximum of revenue function is unattainable in the case of concurrent harvesting of both age cohorts. It has been demonstrated that the direction of natural selection does not explicitly change when unselectively harvesting individuals; however, the adaptive genetic diversity of an unharvested population can be lost due to harvesting.  相似文献

In order to ascertain the thermal insulation function of fur in mice, food and water intakes and rectal and skin temperatures were observed in Jcl: ICR mice and a group of the same species with their fur clipped, as well as BALB/C nu/+ and nu/nu mice. Food and water intakes increased as the ambient temperature dropped. The rectal temperature remained almost unchanged at ambient temperatures of from 18 to 30 degrees C. Skin temperatures were highest at side of the abdomen, lower at the neck, and lowest at the head. There was a tendency for skin temperatures to increase as the ambient temperature rose. The skin temperatures of mice with fur were higher than those of mice without fur. The thermal insulation of fur was 0.25, 0.14 and -0.06 clo at 18, 22, 26 and 30 degrees C in ICR mice, and 0.36, 0.01, 0.01 and -0.03 clo at 18, 22, 26 and 30 degrees C in BALB/C mice, respectively. These results confirm that heat loss from the skin at low temperatures could be prevented by the presence of fur. It also appeared that the hairless mice mutant had a lower metabolic rate than the animals with their fur clipped.  相似文献

Previous behavioural studies using inbred lines have suggested that the gene ( Abpa ) for the alpha subunit of salivary androgen-binding protein (ABP) plays a role in prezygotic isolation between house mouse Mus musculus subspecies. We tested this hypothesis in animals from wild allopatric (121 individuals from four samples) and parapatric (320 animals from 15 samples) populations sampled on the Czech–Bavarian transect across the hybrid zone between M. m. domesticus and M. m. musculus . The study did not reveal a consistent statistically significant trend of homosubspecific preferences in individual allopatric and parapatric populations. Nonetheless, the whole pattern of preference was skewed toward homosubspecific preference mostly on the M. m. musculus side of the hybrid zone. The pattern of homosubspecific preferences was stronger for the time spent sniffing than it was for the first choice of the signal (the ratio of homosubspecific vs. heterosubspecific preferences for both sexes was 6 : 2 in allopatric and 21 : 9 in parapatric populations, while the same rates were 4 : 4 and 16 : 14 for the first choice). To the extent that Y-maze tests reflect preference under wild conditions, we suggest that this slight preference may not in itself be sufficient to impede gene flow between the two subspecies and thus act as a reproductive barrier. ABP most probably participates in a complex system of subspecies-specific recognition in the hybrid zone, but the picture is far too complex at this time to allow a conclusive evaluation of the importance of this role.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 84 , 349–361.  相似文献

The mouse genetic map has been characterized largely through breeding studies based on the principles of Mendelian genetics. More recently, specific genetic information has been obtained from somatic cell studies using the techniques of in situ hybridization and somatic cell hybridization. The genetic analysis possible through these sexual and parasexual approaches is described, and specific linkage information from recent somatic cell studies is reviewed.  相似文献

Consomic C57BL/6 males, carrying either the Mus musculus musculus-derived C57BL/6 Y chromosome or the Mus musculus domesticus-derived Poschiavinus Y chromosome, were outcrossed to females of the inbred strains C3H/Bi and CXBH/By and to females of the random bred strain MF1/Ola. In a study at 12.5 days post coitum, gonads of XYC57 and XYPOS fetuses were assessed for the presence of testicular cords. It was found that XYPOS fetuses had a later onset of testicular development than XYC57 fetuses. Limb development, which was monitored as a measure of overall development, was unaffected by the strain of Y present. These data were supported by a longitudinal study in which the increased growth rate of the testes relative to undifferentiated gonads, was also shown to be delayed in XYPOS fetuses. The extent of the delay was estimated to be approximately 14 h. It is concluded that this delay in the onset of testicular differentiation must be caused by differences between the two Y-chromosome types, most probably allelic differences in the testis determinant Tdy.  相似文献

Maintenance of genetic diversity has recently become a management goal for a number of species, due to its importance for present and future population viability. Genetic drift, primarily through differential reproductive success and inbreeding, can accelerate the loss of genetic diversity in recently recovered populations. We attempt to quantify the consequences of these factors on the genetic diversity contained in a small, recently founded wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) population by examining the genetic variation in this conservation herd, the calves born therein, and its large source population. The Hook Lake Wood Bison Recovery Project was initiated to found a disease-free herd of wood bison containing a representative amount of the genetic diversity present in the Wood Buffalo National Park metapopulation. Levels of diversity in the Hook Lake Wood Bison Recovery Project founders are higher than in previous salvage attempts. To examine the effects of differential reproductive success on this population, we monitored parentage of the calves born in the Hook Lake Wood Bison Recovery Project for 3 years since the founders reached sexual maturity. Two of the male founders sired over 90% of the offspring born in this population, which has led to a reduction in diversity in their calves. Monitoring of reproductive success, and incorporation of selective breeding strategies will be required to reduce the rate at which genetic diversity is lost from this small, isolated population. These steps should occur in other recovery projects, particularly when a small number of individuals are capable of dominating reproduction.  相似文献

An examination of the meiotic pattern of chromosome 1 isolated from a feral mouse population and containing a double insertion (Is) of homogeneously staining regions (HSRs) was carried out. The region delineated by the proximal breakpoint of Is(HSR;1C5) 1Icg and the distal breakpoint of Is(HSR;1E3)2Icg is desynapsed during the early pachytene stage and heterosynapsed at the midpachytene, as shown by electron microscopic analysis of synaptonemal complexes. The HSRs have no effect on the segregation of chromosome 1 in heterozygous mice. The lack of homosynapsis in the region under study causes chiasmata redistribution in heteromorphic bivalents. In normal males, single chiasmata are located in the medial part of the chromosome. In heterozygotes, this segment is heterosynapsed and unavailable for recombination. This leads to a significant decrease in the frequency of bivalents bearing single chiasmata. The total number of chiasmata per bivalent is much higher in heterozygous males than in normal ones. The recombination frequency between proximal markers fz and In also is higher in heterozygous animals. The increase in the total chiasma number in the heteromorphic bivalent is due to the addition of double chiasmata located mostly at precentromeric and pretelomeric regions of the chromosome.  相似文献
