A Potamogeton hybrid recently discovered in Finland was proven to be a new taxon, which has a different parentage than the most similar P.×vepsicus (=P. natans×praelongus) described from Russia. Based on molecular and morphological investigation, the new hybrid was identified as P. alpinus×natans and is here described as P.×exilis nothosp. nov. The hybrid is known only from several nearby localities in a single river system. All discovered colonies almost certainly originate from a single hybridization event that occurred in the upper part of the river system. Other localities downstream have been established through fragmentation and dispersal of stems and rhizomes of this sterile hybrid. A detailed morphological comparison of the new hybrid with similar hybrids and species is provided. 相似文献

The swan obtained by hybridization between Cygnus cygnus and C.olor was delivered to the Moscow Zoo from the Leningrad Zoo in 1989. Between 2002 and 2004, it permanently remained with a female
whooper swan in a large pond. The two swans behaved as a breeding pair, although the sex of the hybrid bird remained unknown.
We observed no courtship displays addressed by the hybrid swan either to the female whooper swan or to other swans living
in the pond. The hybrid swan was exteriorly closer to C. cygnus rather than to C. olor and showed increased aggressiveness. Its threatening behavior was intermediate between parental species in terms of threat
displays and motor activity, although behavioral patterns characteristic of C.olor prevailed. The most frequent sounds in the vocal repertoire of the hybrid swan were close to the vibrant throbbing call of
C.olor in terms of duration and frequency range. In contrast to these sounds, the call of the hybrid swan was noiselike, with distinct
harmonic structure (as in the whooper swan except for extremely narrow interharmonic intervals). These vocal signals of the
hybrid swan were shown to be intermediate between those of the parental species. In addition, the acoustic repertoire of the
hybrid swan included rarely emitted sounds closely resembling elements of vocalizations of both C. cygnus and C. olor. 相似文献

Spatio‐temporal studies of hybrid zones provide an opportunity to test evolutionary hypotheses of hybrid zone maintenance and movement. We conducted a landscape genetics study on a classic hybrid zone of the south‐eastern Australian frogs, Litoria ewingii and Litoria paraewingi. This hybrid zone has been comprehensively studied since the 1960s, providing the unique opportunity to directly assess changes in hybrid zone structure across time. We compared both mtDNA and male advertisement call data from two time periods (present and 1960s). Clinal analysis of the coincidence (same center) and concordance (same width) of these traits indicated that the center of the hybrid zone has shifted 1 km south over the last 40 years, although the width of the zone and the rate of introgression remained unchanged. The low frequency of hybrids, the strong concordance of clines within a time period, and the small but significant movement across the study period despite significant anthropogenic changes through the region, suggest the hybrid zone is a tension zone located within a low‐density trough. Hybrid zone movement has not been considered common in the past but our findings highlight that it should be considered a crucial component to our understanding of evolution. 相似文献

Background
Interspecific hybrids of frogs of the genus Xenopus result in sterile hybrid males and fertile hybrid females. Previous work has demonstrated a dramatic asymmetrical pattern of misexpression in hybrid males compared to the two parental species with relatively few genes misexpressed in comparisons of hybrids and the maternal species (X. laevis) and dramatically more genes misexpressed in hybrids compared to the paternal species (X. muelleri). In this work, we examine the gene expression pattern in hybrid females of X. laevis × X. muelleri to determine if this asymmetrical pattern of expression also occurs in hybrid females. 相似文献7.

Mitochondrial–nuclear incompatibility has a major role in reproductive isolation between species. However, the underlying mechanism and driving force of mitochondrial–nuclear incompatibility remain elusive. Here, we report a pentatricopeptide repeat‐containing (PPR) protein, Ccm1, and its interacting partner, 15S rRNA, to be involved in hybrid incompatibility between two yeast species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces bayanus. S. bayanus‐Ccm1 has reduced binding affinity for S. cerevisiae‐15S rRNA, leading to respiratory defects in hybrid cells. This incompatibility can be rescued by single mutations on several individual PPR motifs, demonstrating the highly evolvable nature of PPR proteins. When we examined other PPR proteins in the closely related Saccharomyces sensu stricto yeasts, about two‐thirds of them showed detectable incompatibility. Our results suggest that fast co‐evolution between flexible PPR proteins and their mitochondrial RNA substrates may be a common driving force in the development of mitochondrial–nuclear hybrid incompatibility. 相似文献

The development and adoption of hybrid seed technology have led to dramatic increases in agricultural productivity. However, it has been a challenge to develop a commercially viable platform for the production of hybrid wheat (Triticum aestivum) seed due to wheat's strong inbreeding habit. Recently, a novel platform for commercial hybrid seed production was described. This hybridization platform utilizes nuclear male sterility to force outcrossing and has been applied to maize and rice. With the recent molecular identification of the wheat male fertility gene Ms1, it is now possible to extend the use of this novel hybridization platform to wheat. In this report, we used the CRISPR/Cas9 system to generate heritable, targeted mutations in Ms1. The introduction of biallelic frameshift mutations into Ms1 resulted in complete male sterility in wheat cultivars Fielder and Gladius, and several of the selected male‐sterile lines were potentially non‐transgenic. Our study demonstrates the utility of the CRISPR/Cas9 system for the rapid generation of male sterility in commercial wheat cultivars. This represents an important step towards capturing heterosis to improve wheat yields, through the production and use of hybrid seed on an industrial scale. 相似文献

Comparative genetic mapping in interspecific pedigrees presents a powerful approach to study genetic differentiation, genome evolution and reproductive isolation in diverging species. We used this approach for genetic analysis of an F1 hybrid of two Eucalyptus tree species, Eucalyptus grandis (W. Hill ex Maiden.) and Eucalyptus globulus (Labill.). This wide interspecific cross is characterized by hybrid inviability and hybrid abnormality. Approximately 20% of loci in the genome of the F1 hybrid are expected to be hemizygous due to a difference in genome size between E. grandis (640 Mbp) and E. globulus (530 Mbp). We investigated the extent of colinearity between the two genomes and the distribution of hemizygous loci in the F1 hybrid using high-throughput, semi-automated AFLP marker analysis. Two pseudo-backcross families (backcrosses of an F1 individual to non-parental individuals of the parental species) were each genotyped with more than 800 AFLP markers. This allowed construction of de novo comparative genetic linkage maps of the F1 hybrid and the two backcross parents. All shared AFLP marker loci in the three single-tree parental maps were found to be colinear and little evidence was found for gross chromosomal rearrangements. Our results suggest that hemizygous AFLP loci are dispersed throughout the E. grandis chromosomes of the F1 hybrid.Communicated by O. Savolainen 相似文献

of the latter pair have been putatively identified on the basis of a mosaic pelage color. In this paper, we describe the first
confirmed cases of hybridization between a female A. guariba clamitans and a male A. caraya. One hybrid male was born in 2007 and one hybrid female was born in 2009 with distinct coat colors. The male resembled the

The incomplete fertility of japonica × indica rice hybrids has inhibited breeders’ access to the substantial heterotic potential of these hybrids. As hybrid sterility
is caused by an allelic interaction at a small number of loci, it is possible to overcome it by simple introgression at the
major sterility loci. Here we report the use of marker-assisted backcrossing to transfer into the elite japonica cv. Zhendao88 a photoperiod-sensitive male sterility gene from cv. Lunhui422S (indica) and the yellow leaf gene from line Yellow249 (indica). The microsatellite markers RM276, RM455, RM141 and RM185 were used to tag the fertility genes S5, S8, S7 and S9, respectively. Line 509S is a true-breeding photoperiod-sensitive male sterile plant, which morphologically closely resembles
the japonica type. Genotypic analysis showed that the genome of line 509S comprises about 92% japonica DNA. Nevertheless, hybrids between line 509S and japonica varieties suffer from a level of hybrid sterility, although the line is highly cross-compatible with indica types, with the resulting hybrids expressing a significant degree of heterosis. Together, these results suggest that segment
substitution on fertility loci based on known information and marker-assisted selection are an effective approach for utilizing

The potential importance of cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI)‐inducing bacterial symbionts in speciation of their arthropod hosts has been debated. Theoretical advances have led to a consensus that a role is plausible when CI is combined with other isolating barriers. However, the insect model systems Nasonia and Drosophila are the only two experimental examples documented. Here, we analyzed the components of reproductive isolation between the parasitoid wasp Encarsia suzannae, which is infected by the CI‐inducing symbiont Cardinium, and its uninfected sibling species Encarsia gennaroi. Laboratory crosses demonstrated that: (1) sexual isolation is incomplete; (2) hybrid offspring production is greatly reduced in the interspecific CI cross; (3) viable hybrids may be produced by curing E. suzannae males of Cardinium with antibiotics; (4) hybrid offspring production in the reciprocal cross is greatly reduced by hybrid inviability due to genetic incompatibilities; (5) hybrid sterility is nearly complete in both directions at the F1 stage. Thus, asymmetrical hybrid incompatibilities and CI act as complementary isolating mechanisms. We propose a new model for contributions of CI symbionts to speciation, with CI reducing gene flow between species in one direction, and in the other, a symbiont sweep resulting in accelerated mtDNA evolution, negative cytonuclear interactions, and hybrid incompatibilities. 相似文献

Two species of Pluchea have been introduced into the Hawaiian Islands in the present century. These are P. indica, native to southeastern Asia, and P. odorata, native to the western hemisphere. Both are erect shrubs. Within the past 30 years a third Pluchea taxon, a sprawling shrub morphologically distinct from the two species, has appeared in the Hawaiian Islands and on other islands in the tropical Pacific. On the basis of morphology, fertility, meiotic behavior, and other evidence, it is concluded that the third taxon is a hybrid between the two species. The hybrid is highly sterile; it has a limited capacity for asexual reproduction. Metaphase I configurations for both species were found to be 10II; the most frequent configuration in the hybrid was 8II + 4I. The hybrid is given a binomial. 相似文献

Summary While the in vitro clonal propagation of peat mosses (Sphagnaceae) in bioreactors has been established since the late 1980s, it has never been possible to regenerate Sphagnum species from isolated protoplasts, which is a key step towards the production of closely defined genetically modified clones.
The present study describes an efficient protocol for protoplast isolation and regeneration of Sphagnum fallax. Protoplast survival rates of over 50% and regeneration rates of up to 20% were achieved by using excised capitulum buds
as starting material and by co-cultivating Sphagnum protoplasts with protoplasts from a chlorophyll-deficient Solanum hybrid clone. Besides the effects of nutrient components and differential osmotic readjustment of the regenerant cell clusters,

Incorporating male sterility into hybrid seed production reduces its cost and ensures high varietal purity. Despite these advantages, male‐sterile lines have not been widely used to produce tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) hybrid seeds. We describe the development of a biotechnology‐based breeding platform that utilized genic male sterility to produce hybrid seeds. In this platform, we generated a novel male‐sterile tomato line by clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR‐associated protein 9 (Cas9)‐mediated mutagenesis of a stamen‐specific gene SlSTR1 and devised a transgenic maintainer by transforming male‐sterile plants with a fertility‐restoration gene linked to a seedling‐colour gene. Offspring of crosses between a hemizygous maintainer and the homozygous male‐sterile plant segregated into 50% non‐transgenic male‐sterile plants and 50% male‐fertile maintainer plants, which could be easily distinguished by seedling colour. This system has great practical potential for hybrid seed breeding and production as it overcomes the problems intrinsic to other male‐sterility systems and can be easily adapted for a range of tomato cultivars and diverse vegetable crops. 相似文献

q-puc promoter-lac operator hybrid promoter, which allows the puc operon to be regulated by both IPTG and low oxygen level. Synthesis of LH2 complexes was completely repressed in the absence
of isopropyl β-D-thiogalactoside (IPTG), and the degree of induction was controlled by varying the concentration of IPTG.
The optimal concentration of IPTG was determined. SDS-PAGE and Western blot were employed for further analysis. Our results
suggest that the reengineered hybrid promoter is efficient to tightly regulate the expression of the puc operon, and our strategy can open up a new approach in the study of the membrane protein expression system. 相似文献

In order to clarify patterns of hybrid formation in the Asplenium nidus complex, artificial crossing experiments were performed between individuals of genetically differentiated groups based on the sequence of the rbcL gene, including A. australasicum from New Caledonia, A. setoi from Japan and several cryptic species in the A. nidus complex. No hybrid plants were obtained in crosses between nine of the 16 pairs. Even for pairs that generated hybrids, the frequency of hybrid formation was lower than expected given random mating, or only one group was able to act as the maternal parent, when the genetic distance (Kimura's two parameter) between parental individuals was at least 0.006. Sterile hybrids were produced by three pairs that were distantly related but capable of forming hybrids. Considering the results of the crosses together with the genetic distance between the parental individuals, it seems that the frequency of hybrid formation decreases rapidly with increasing divergence. The frequency of hybrid formation has not been previously examined in homosporous ferns, but it seems that a low frequency of hybrid formation can function as an important mechanism of reproductive isolation between closely related pairs of species in the A. nidus complex in addition to hybrid sterility. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 160 , 42–63. 相似文献

Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is an important trait in rice (Oryza sativa L.) breeding because it provides a source for producing hybrid seeds. In rice CMS lines, ATPases involved in the oxidative
phosphorylation complexes are believed to be dysfunctional due to the expression of rice CMS-related gene orf79. In the present study, a new type of CMS line named CMS-ZA (ZidaoA) was used. We found an orf79 homologous gene (named orfZ79) in three different rice lines (a CMS line, a maintainer line, and a hybrid). However, no detectable expression products
of orfZ79 were found in the three lines. We evaluated the ATPase and NADH dehydrogenase activities of the three lines using in-gel
catalytic assays. Our results show that the sterile line has intact ATPase activity, while NADH DHase activity is clearly
decreased. To investigate NADH dehydrogenase deficiency, we measured NADH DHase activity in etiolated seedlings and green
seedlings from the ZidaoA CMS sterile line and its corresponding maintainer line. We note that the NADH DHase activity of
the sterile line was more deficient in green seedlings than that in etiolated seedlings. Our results show a possible role
of NADH DHase deficiency to cause rice CMS. 相似文献

Salvia divinorum Epl. & Játiva-M. (Lamiaceae) is a potent hallucinogenic plant that is classified within Salvia subgenus Calosphace, section Dusenostachys, and hypothesized to be an interspecific hybrid. It is of ethnobotanical significance due to its employment in traditional
healing ceremonies by the Mazatecs of Oaxaca, Mexico, and due to its unique pharmacology—a highly selective, non-nitrogenous,
κ-opioid receptor agonist. In order to test its phylogenetic position and putative hybridity, we sequenced multiple DNA regions
(ITS, trnL-trnF, and psbA-trnH) of 52 species—representing the major lineages of subgenus Calosphace—and six accessions of S. divinorum. Our molecular phylogenetic results suggest that S. divinorum should not be classified within Dusenostachys and that it is not a hybrid. Additionally, we determine that the closest known relative of this psychoactive Mexican sage
