In four ground squirrel species from the Volga region—yellow (Spermophilus fulvus), russet (S. major), little (S. pygmaeus), and speckled (S. suslicus)—four hybridization variants (major/fulvus, major/pygmaeus, major/suslicus, and pygmaeus/suslicus) have been reliably described. Earlier we have shown that populations of S. major from the Volga region were characterized by wide introgression of mtDNA from S. fulvus and S. pygmaeus, which probably, resulted from ancient hybridization [5]. In this study, the same populations were used to analyze the introgression of the Y chromosome, which (unlike mtDNA) is paternally inherited. Three genes, ZfY, SRY, and SmcY were tested as Y-chromosomal candidate markers. It was demonstrated that Y chromosome of ground squirrels lacked the ZfY gene, while its homologous structure, ZfY(X), was presumably linked to the X chromosome. The SRY region examined was rather conservative. In particular, the sequences determined in S. major and S. fulvus were identical, while three out of four substitutions found in S. pygmaeus were located in the coding region. The SmcY gene was found to be the most suitable marker, providing distinguishing of all of the four ground squirrel species by nine nucleotide substitutions. Introgression at the Y chromosome was observed only in two cases: in one S. major individual (out of 51 phenotypically pure animals) caught in the major/fulvus sympatry zone, and in four (one litter) out of fourteen S. fulvus individuals caught in close vicinity of the sympatry zone of these two species. Among 28 S. pymaeus and 9 S. suslicus individuals, no foreign SmcY genes were detected. Two colonies of the “hybrid swarm” type were examined with eight major/suslicus hybrids analyzed in the first and seventeen major/fulvus hybrids in the second colony. The prevalence of the S. major paternal lineages was observed in both colonies (87.5 and 82.4%, respectively). The data obtained suggest that compared to wide mtDNA introgression, introgression of Y chromosome in the Volga region ground squirrels is statistically significantly less frequent event.  相似文献

1. Previous studies have suggested that elevated ketone levels are associated with increased survival time in rodents exposed to hypoxia. In this study the association between whole blood BHB (beta-hydroxybutyrate) and hypoxic survival time was investigated in hibernating and non-hibernating ground squirrels and in rats. 2. Non-hibernating ground squirrels and rats were exposed to hypoxia (4.5% O2). One hundred per cent of ground squirrels survived 1 hr of hypoxia vs 20% of rats. 3. Ketone levels were significantly higher in ground squirrels than rats during hypoxia, and rats surviving the longest had the highest ketone levels. 4. When hibernation was induced in ground squirrels there was a significant increase in beta-hydroxy-butyrate from 0.45 to 1.6 mM (P = 0.0005). 5. Ground squirrel heart mitochondrial respiratory control ratios and ATP synthesis rates indicated no preferential ketone utilization which might suggest a possible extramitochondrial role of BHB during hypoxia. 6. We conclude that elevated blood BHB levels are associated with increased hypoxic survival and they may have evolved in response to life-threatening hypoxia as experienced during hibernation.  相似文献

Four species of ground squirrel—yellow (Spermophilus fulvus), russet (S. major), small (S. pygmaeus), and spotted (S. suslicus)—occur in the Volga region. Between S. major and S. pigmaeus, S. major and S. fulvus, and S. major and S. suslicus, sporadic hybridization was reported. Using sequencing and restriction analysis, we have examined the mtDNA C region in 13 yellow, 60 russet, 61 small, 45 spotted ground squirrels, and 9 phenotypic hybrids between these species. It was shown that 43% of S. major individuals had alien mitotypes typical of S. fulvus and S. pygmaeus. Alien mitotypes occurred both within and outside sympatric zones. No alien mitotypes were found in 119 animals of the other three species, which suggests that only one parental species (S. major) predominantly participates in backcrosses. Phenotypic hybrids S. fulvus × S. major and S. major × S. pygmaeus) were reliably identified using RAPD–PCR of nuclear DNA. However, we could find no significant traces of hybridization in S. major with alien mitotypes. Analysis of p53 pseudogenes of S. major and S. fulvus that were for the first time described in the present study produced similar results: 59 out of 60 individuals of S. major (including S. major with S. fulvus mitotypes) had only the pseudogene variant specific for S. major. This situation is possible even at low hybridization frequencies (less than 1% according to field observations and 1.4 to 2.7% according to nuclear DNA analysis) if dispersal of S. major from the sympatric zones mainly involved animals that obtained alien mtDNA via backcrossing. The prevalence of animals with alien mitotypes in some S. major populations can be explained by the founder effect. Further studies based on large samples are required for clarifying the discrepancies between mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data.  相似文献

The growth of incisors was studied in two Spermophilus parryii and two S. undulatus ground squirrels with DS-1922L temperature data loggers implanted in the peritoneal cavity, which were kept under laboratory conditions. Daily increments on the incisors surface were similar to those in other species of ground squirrels, but they were less distinct and regular than in wild-living conspecific individuals from the same region. Two S. parryii and one S. undulatus ground squirrels entered hibernation and successfully overwintered. Despite some anomalies in their incisors, changes in body temperature during hibernation (recorded by the data loggers) had an effect on the pattern of their growth, resulting in the formation of a “hibernation zone” on the incisor surface. The number of narrow increments within this zone roughly corresponded to the number of alternating periods of torpor and euthermia during hibernation. This could be regarded as evidence that the incisors of the animals studied continued growing throughout hibernation, including the period of deep hibernation, with the rhythm of their growth coinciding with the rhythm of changes in body temperature. The effect of spontaneous trauma of an upper incisor on the growth of other incisors is described.  相似文献

Data on the influence of a summer drought on the state of vegetation and the period of activity of the yellow ground squirrel in colonies of the Saratov Trans-Volga Yeruslan sands are presented. During the 2009 drought, the flora virtually ceased vegetating and was characterized by low rates of species diversity, projective cover, and height of herbage. Ground squirrels entered hibernation two weeks earlier than in previous years (with normal humidity). The only colony with a long period of activity in that year was near a meadow-reed estuary. The presence of green vegetation in small meadows contributed to a prolongation of the activity of ground squirrels and the usual date of the start of hibernation.  相似文献

1. The concentrations of total cholesterol (free cholesterol plus cholesteryl ester) in the plasma and in two lipoprotein fractions of golden-mantled ground squirrels (Spermophilus lateralis) were measured during pre-hibernation and compared to those values measured during hibernation. 2. Hibernating ground squirrels had significantly higher (P less than 0.005) very low density lipoprotein plus low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL + LDL-C) concentrations than did pre-hibernating ground squirrels. 3. Hibernating squirrels additionally exhibited significantly higher (P less than 0.005) total plasma cholesterol concentration per high density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration (TPC/HDL-C) ratios than did pre-hibernating squirrels. 4. The significant differences in the lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations observed in this study suggest that lipoprotein metabolism in pre-hibernators was significantly different from that in hibernators and was a reflection of the marked biochemical and physiological adjustments these animals must undergo during their transition from pre-hibernation to hibernation.  相似文献

The epidemiology of Bartonella infections in Richardson's ground squirrels (Spermophilus richardsonii) was studied at multiple sites in Saskatchewan, Canada, from 2002 to 2004. The overall prevalence of Bartonella infection was 48%. Juvenile squirrels were significantly more likely to be infected with Bartonella than were adults (58% and 37%, respectively), and juvenile animals also were significantly more likely to have high levels of bacteremia compared to adult animals. Prevalence of Bartonella infection appeared to decrease with age; only 24% of animals known to be > or = 2 yr old were infected with Bartonella. Prevalence of infection was lowest in May (27%) and highest in late summer and early autumn (71%). The prevalence of fleas also varied seasonally, and animals were more likely to have fleas in the late summer and early autumn than in early summer. We found no relationship between Bartonella prevalence and host density or flea prevalence.  相似文献

Analysis of Spermophilus pallidicauda Satunin, 1903 from three localities in Mongolia using cytogenetic characteristics (chromosome number and morphology, as well as the number and localization of nucleolus organizer regions) revealed the presence of a first-generation (F1) hybrid animal (2n = 36), of the paletailed S. pallidicauda (2n = 34) and alashanic S. alaschanicus (2n = 38) ground squirrels in the contact zone of their ranges. Analysis of nuclear DNA from ten ground squirrels (from a set of karyologically examined animals) by RAPD-PCR with eight oligonucleotide primers (OPA10, OPA12, OPC02, OPC5, OPC08, OPC09, OPC12, and OPD05) revealed four hybrids in two sites. with one of the hybrid being F1. The position of the hybrids in phylogenetic reconstructions made for the subgenera Citellus and Colobotis species varied depending on the method used. In the UPGMA dendrogram of genetic similarity hybrids formed their own subcluster with high bootstrap index (949) within the cluster of Citellus species. In the NJ phylogenetic tree, hybrids also clustered with high boot-strap index (886). But in this case they were located between the Colobotis and Citellus species clusters. The mtDNA haplotypes of the three hybrids examined were highly similar to the Colobotis ground squirrels, albeit in phylogenetic reconstructions they were placed between Colobotis and Citellus. The sites of the hybrid animals identification were located more than 200 km apart. Hence, the contact zone between the S. pallidicauda and S. alaschanicus can encompass a large territory in Mongolia.  相似文献

Olfactory communication is an important aspect of the biology of ground squirrels; accordingly, some of their integumentary glands are associated with scent-marking behavior. Although reports of neoplasms in ground squirrels are limited, the literature on tumors in this family of rodents is extensive, with hepatocellular carcinomas in woodchucks and fibromas in squirrels being the 2 most common neoplasms. Apocrine gland tumors occur frequently in domestic animals such as cats and dogs but to our knowledge have not previously been reported in squirrels. Here we describe 2 cases of adenocarcinoma of the dorsal glands in privately owned European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus). The skin nodules were characterized histologically by proliferation of epithelial cells, which were arranged in a tubuloacinar pattern with neoplastic emboli within the blood vessels. Adenocarcinoma of the dorsal glands was diagnosed in light of the anatomic localization, immunohistochemistry results, and histochemistry findings.Olfactory communication is an important aspect of the biology of most ground squirrels;10,12 accordingly, some of their integumentary glands are associated with scent-marking behavior.5,10 Squirrels have 3 glandular anatomic areas: the oral–cheek area, dorsal area, and the anal area.10 The dorsal gland field in the skin extends from the scapular region caudally and from the scapular region anterioventrally to the ear.9,10Approximately 60 individual oval-shaped sudoriparous glands comprise the dorsal gland field. Individual dorsal glands are composed of a tightly coiled and branched fundus, a large sinus, and a singular duct, which opens on the free surface of the skin.9,10 The strong- smelling oil secreted by the glands probably is released on vegetation and serves as a source of information to other members of the species.9 These glands seem to be more active during spring and summer than during winter. They are stimulated by excitement, present in both sexes, and larger in adult male squirrels.10 Here we describe 2 cases of neoplasia of the dorsal glands in 2 privately owned European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus; Sciuridae).  相似文献

The squirrel family, Sciuridae, is one of the largest and most widely dispersed families of mammals. In spite of the wide distribution and conspicuousness of this group, phylogenetic relationships remain poorly understood. We used DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene of 114 species in 21 genera to infer phylogenetic relationships among sciurids based on maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic methods. Although we evaluated more complex alternative models of nucleotide substitution to reconstruct Bayesian phylogenies, none provided a better fit to the data than the GTR+G+I model. We used the reconstructed phylogenies to evaluate the current taxonomy of the Sciuridae. At essentially all levels of relationships, we found the phylogeny of squirrels to be in substantial conflict with the current taxonomy. At the highest level, the flying squirrels do not represent a basal divergence, and the current division of Sciuridae into two subfamilies is therefore not phylogenetically informative. At the tribal level, the Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Sciurillus, represents a basal divergence and is not closely related to the other members of the tribe Sciurini. At the genus level, the sciurine genus Sciurus is paraphyletic with respect to the dwarf squirrels (Microsciurus), and the Holarctic ground squirrels (Spermophilus) are paraphyletic with respect to antelope squirrels (Ammospermophilus), prairie dogs (Cynomys), and marmots (Marmota). Finally, several species of chipmunks and Holarctic ground squirrels do not appear monophyletic, indicating a need for reevaluation of alpha taxonomy.  相似文献

California ground squirrel alarm vocalizations were recorded in field and laboratory, and sonagraphically analysed. The contexts of both naturally occurring and experimentally elicited calls were noted in the field. The components of this graded system are chatters, chats and whistles. Chatters and chats are often elicited by terrestrial predators, whistles commonly by low flying raptors. Whistles are more commonly associated with cryptic behavior and flight than chatter-chats, but both call types usually elicit bipedal alert postures. These calls grade along a number of dimensions which may signal redundantly the level of excitation of the caller. We propose that the chatter-chat calls of highly aroused squirrels are composed of more and longer notes, occur at a higher rate, are less noisy and contain more frequency modulation. Whistles, however, are single-note calls that contain no frequency modulation, even though they are emitted by highly aroused squirrels and are long and noise free. Preliminary data suggest that: 1) chats are easier for a human ♀ to localize than whistles; 2) elevation of the head, by adopting bipedal postures and mounting promontories, enhances the audibility of alarms.  相似文献

A hormonal-challenge protocol was used to compare the stress response of males of Arctic ground squirrels and red squirrels during the breeding season (May). These squirrels live in the same boreal forest of the Yukon, but have very different life histories and utilize the forest in markedly different ways. Red squirrels had levels of total cortisol, maximum corticosteroid-binding capacity, and free cortisol that were 5, 7, and 2 times, respectively, those of Arctic ground squirrels. Red squirrels were resistant to suppression by an artificial glucocorticoid, dexamethasone (DEX); Arctic ground squirrels were not. Cortisol levels in red squirrels responded slowly but continuously to the ACTH injection; Arctic ground squirrels responded rapidly and then stabilized. Testosterone levels in red squirrels were extremely sensitive to the challenge, being suppressed by both DEX and ACTH; levels in Arctic ground squirrels were resistant to the challenge, being modestly suppressed by DEX and stimulated by ACTH. Energy mobilization, as measured by glucose and free fatty acid responses, was not affected. Red squirrels had four times the levels of white blood cells and higher proportions of lymphocytes and lower proportions of eosinophils than Arctic ground squirrels, indicating that the latter were in worse condition immunologically. Our evidence suggests that the functions associated with the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis are compromised in breeding male Arctic ground squirrels, but not in red squirrels. We propose that in male red squirrels this axis has evolved in the context of a stable social system based on long-lived animals with individual territories which are needed to deal with unpredictable winter food supplies. In contrast, Arctic ground squirrels escape the rigors of winter by hibernation and this hormonal axis has evolved in short-lived males in the context of intense intra-sexual competition in a social system based on female kin groups and regular male dispersal to avoid inbreeding. During a long-term field study of a free-living population of California ground squirrels (Spermophilus beecheyi), blood samples were drawn at regular intervals from marked females via femoral venipuncture, and plasma progesterone (P) and prolactin (PRL) were measured by radioimmunoassay. Marked fluctuations with season and reproductive condition occurred in circulating levels of both hormones, with peak levels occurring during the spring breeding season. Two peaks in P concentrations were observed each spring, the first occurring during pregnancy, and the second during lactation. Peak PRL levels in females were also reached during the lactation interval, midway between the two P peaks. Analysis of repeated measures from individual females showed a marked decline in circulating P around the time of parturition. Juveniles had lower mean P levels than adults, and yearlings had lower peak levels during their initial reproductive episodes than older females did. The observed pattern of P secretion in S. beecheyi differs from that known for most mammals, but resembles those reported for other ground-dwelling sciurid rodents.  相似文献

Fecal samples from arctic ground squirrels (Spermophilus parryii) collected in Alaska (n = 90) and Russia (n = 46) and from red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) in Alaska (n = 35) were examined for the presence of Eimeria spp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae). Four species were recovered from arctic ground squirrels, including Eimeria callospermophili (prevalence = 18%), Eimeria cynomysis (23.5%), Eimeria lateralis (19%), and Eimeria morainensis (77%). A single species, Eimeria tamiasciuri (91%), was recovered from red squirrels. Eimerians recovered from arctic ground squirrels represent new host records, and the single species from red squirrels is a new geographic record. Alaskan arctic ground squirrel prevalence was higher for E. callospermophili (Alaska = 22% vs. Russia = 9%), E. cynomysis (34% vs. 2%), and E. lateralis (27% vs. 4%), but not E. morainensis (78% vs. 76%).  相似文献

Effects of hibernation on memory were tested in European ground squirrels (Spermophilus citellus). The animals were trained in summer to successfully accomplish two tasks: a spatial memory task in a maze and an operant task on a feeding machine. One group hibernated normally, and the other was prevented from hibernation by maintaining ambient temperature at 22 degrees C. In spring, the same tasks were repeated for both groups and their individual performances compared to the initial training phase. The experimental groups differed significantly in both tasks. The nonhibernating animals had higher levels of retention and needed significantly fewer trials to relearn the tasks than the group that had hibernated. In addition to testing the retention of conditioned tasks, social memory was also studied. The ground squirrels were given a social recognition test in spring with one familiar and one unfamiliar conspecific. In contrast to the conditioned tasks, social memory did not seem to be affected by hibernation. The results indicate negative effects of hibernation on the retention of conditioned tasks, which could produce important constraints on animals. A potential explanation for this memory loss might be changes in neuronal activity, which occur during hibernation.  相似文献

Vigilance is a commonly studied antipredator phenomenon. However, little research has been conducted on the effects of visual obstruction coupled with a manipulation of the cost of performing vigilance behaviours. We tested the hypothesis that antipredator vigilance decreases as the cost of performing antipredator vigilance increases in free-ranging thirteen-lined ground squirrels. We presented adult ground squirrels with peanut butter within six rectangular Plexiglas boxes (opaque on all sides; clear on top) ranging in length from 15.2 to 91.4 cm. Squirrels repeatedly entered and withdrew from the boxes, to scan visually the surrounding area. As box length increased and, therefore, the cost of the vigilance behaviour increased, the ground squirrels increased their mean time within the box per entry and decreased their alertness per unit of trial time. Squirrels took longer to traverse the longer boxes, but their travel time into the boxes was significantly slower than their travel time out of the boxes. We interpreted this difference in travel time to indicate a behavioural conflict that occurred only when the squirrels entered the box (food versus vigilance) and did not exist once the squirrels had begun to exit from the box. The hypothesis that a decrease in ground squirrel antipredator vigilance would benefit the squirrels by decreasing their time exposed to predators (i.e. decreased trial duration, which was determined by the squirrels' behaviour), was not supported.
