Feeding by host hermit crabs Dardanus pedunculatus on their symbiotic sea anemones Calliactis polypus was investigated using animals collected at Shirahama, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. In the first experiment, changes in the number of sea anemones on hermit crab shells were recorded in single‐and double‐crab trials without food and single‐crab trials with food. The number of sea anemones significantly decreased under starved conditions. The extent of this decrease per single hermit crab was higher in the double‐crab trials than in the single‐crab trials. Direct observations and video recordings showed that hermit crabs occasionally removed sea anemones from their own shells, and also from partners’ shells in the double‐crab trials, and consumed them. In the second experiment, fed and unfed hermit crabs with or without sea anemones were examined for body weight changes. Fed hermit crabs gained weight whereas unfed hermit crabs lost it. The degree of weight loss in unfed hermit crabs was significantly higher in those without sea anemones, which indicates some value of the latter as food. We offer some speculations on the course of development of this symbiosis, with predation on sea anemones having played an important initial role.  相似文献

Base-line data on acaricide susceptibility of larvae and of larvae and nymphs of the tropical bont tick,Amblyomma variegatum (Fabricius), from Puerto Rico and Guadeloupe were collected on 14 and six compounds, respectively. Nymphs 7–8 weeks old from Puerto Rico and Guadeloupe, and larvae 3–4 weeks old from Guadeloupe, were exposed for 24 or 48 h to residues of acetone dilutions of technical-grade or commercial formulations of acaricides on disposable glass pipettes. Effectiveness of the acaricides in killing nymphs (lc 50) from Guadeloupe and Puerto Rico ranged from 0.0001% for deltamethrin to 0.269% for malathion. For Puerto Rico, the susceptibility to toxaphene and amitraz, but not to dioxathion, increased with increasing age of nymphs. Nymphs from Guadeloupe were 9.5 times more susceptible to chlorpyrifos than nymphs from Puerto Rico. The susceptibility of larvae from Guadeloupe to acaricides tested ranged fromlc 50 0.000012% for deltamethrin to 0.0141% for ethion. There was no evidence of development of acaricide resistance in ticks from Guadeloupe or Puerto Rico.  相似文献

The Puerto Rican frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui has invaded Hawaii and reached densities far exceeding those in their native range. One possible explanation for the success of E. coqui in its introduced range is that it lost its co-evolved parasites in the process of the invasion. We compared the parasites of E. coqui in its native versus introduced range. We collected parasite data on 160 individual coqui frogs collected during January-April 2006 from eight populations in Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Puerto Rican coqui frogs had higher species richness of parasites than Hawaiian coqui frogs. Parasite prevalence and intensity were significantly higher in Hawaii, however this was likely a product of the life history of the dominant parasite and its minimal harm to the host. This suggests that the scarcity of parasites may be a factor contributing to the success of Eleutherodactylus coqui in Hawaii.  相似文献

Aim Eleutherodactylus coqui (commonly known as the coqui) is a frog species native to Puerto Rico and non‐native in Hawaii. Despite its ecological and economic impacts, its potential range in Hawaii is unknown, making control and management efforts difficult. Here, we predicted the distribution potential of the coqui on the island of Hawaii. Location Puerto Rico and Hawaii. Methods We predicted its potential distribution in Hawaii using five biophysical variables derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) as predictors, presence/absence data collected from Puerto Rico and Hawaii and three classification methods – Classification Trees (CT), Random Forests (RF) and Support Vector Machines (SVM). Results Models developed separately using data from the native range and the invaded range predicted potential coqui habitats in Hawaii with high performance. Across the three classification methods, mean area under the ROC curve (AUC) was 0.75 for models trained using the native range data and 0.88 for models trained using the invaded range data. We achieved the highest AUC value of 0.90 using RF for models trained with invaded range data. Main conclusions Our results showed that the potential distribution of coquis on the island of Hawaii is much larger than its current distribution, with RF predicting up to 49% of the island as suitable coqui habitat. Predictions also show that most areas with an elevation between 0 and 2000 m are suitable coqui habitats, whereas the cool and dry high elevation areas beyond 2000 m elevation are unsuitable. Results show that MODIS‐derived biophysical variables are capable of characterizing coqui habitats in Hawaii.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships among chain-forming Cochlodinium species, including the harmful red tide forming dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides, were investigated using specimens collected from coastal waters of Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, México, Philippines, Puerto Rico, and USA. The phylogenetic tree inferred from partial (D1–D6 regions) large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (LSU rDNA) sequences clearly differentiated between C. polykrikoides and a recently described species, Cochlodinium fulvescens. Two samples collected from the Pacific coasts of North America (British Columbia, Canada and California, USA) having typical morphological characters of C. fulvescens such as the sulcus located in the intermediate region of the cingulum, were closely related to C. fulvescens from western Japan in the phylogenetic tree. Cochlodinium polykrikoides formed a monophyletic group positioned as a sister group of the C. fulvescens clade with three well-supported sub-clades. These three clades were composed of (1) East Asian, including specimens collected from Hong Kong, western Japan, and southern Korea, (2) Philippines, from Manila Bay, Philippines and Omura Bay, Japan, and (3) American/Malaysian, from the Atlantic coasts of USA, the Pacific coast of México, Puerto Rico, and Borneo Island, Malaysia. Each of these clades is considered to be a so-called “ribotype” representing the population inhabiting each region, which is distinguished based on ribosomal RNA gene sequences in the species despite similarities in their morphological characters.  相似文献

Sharp‐shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus) are forest raptors that are widely distributed in the Americas. A subspecies endemic to Puerto Rico (A. s. venator) is listed as endangered and restricted to mature and old secondary montane forests and shade coffee plantations. However, recent information about the population status and distribution of Puerto Rican Sharp‐shinned Hawks is lacking. We developed a spatial geographic distribution model for Sharp‐shinned Hawks in Puerto Rico from 33 locations collected during four breeding seasons (2013–2016) using biologically relevant landscape variables (aspect, canopy closure, elevation, rainfall, slope, and terrain roughness). Elevation accounted for 89.8% of the model fit and predicted that the greatest probability of occurrence of Sharp‐shinned Hawks in Puerto Rico (> 60%) was at elevations above 900 m. Based on our model, an estimated 56.1 km2 of habitat exists in Puerto Rico with a high probability of occurrence. This total represents ~0.6% of the island's area. Public lands included 43.8% of habitat with high probability of occurrence (24.6 km2), 96% of which was located within four protected areas. Our results suggest that Sharp‐shinned Hawks are rare in Puerto Rico and restricted to the higher elevations of the Cordillera Central. Additional research is needed to identify and address ecological limiting factors, and recovery actions are needed to avoid the extinction of this endemic island raptor.  相似文献

Experiments were designed to investigate selective predation by medium (40–55 mm carapace width: CW) and large (55–70 mm CW) Carcinus maenas when feeding on four bivalves of contrasting shell morphology. Size-selection was examined by presenting individual crabs with a wide size range of Mytilus edulis, Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas and Cerastoderma edule. Medium-sized crabs preferred mussels 5–15 mm shell length (maximum shell dimension: SL) and cockles 5–10 mm SL, whereas large crabs preferred mussels 15–25 mm and cockles 10–20 mm SL. Crabs generally showed no preference for any particular size of either oyster species. Species-selection was examined by presenting individual crabs with paired combinations of the four bivalves in various proportions. When offered mussels and oysters simultaneously, both size categories of crabs consistently selected mussels, and food choice was independent of prey relative abundance. By contrast, C. maenas selected mussels and cockles as expected by the frequency in which each size category of crab encountered the preferred size ranges of prey. Crab preference clearly paralleled the rank order of prey profitability, which in turn was mainly determined by prey biomass, suggesting that active selection takes place at some point of the predation cycle. Experiments with epoxy resin models showed that initial reluctance of crabs to attack oysters was not associated with the ultimate energy reward. Moreover, they suggest that foraging decisions are partly based on evaluations of overall prey shape and volume, and that the minimum dimension of the shell constitutes an important feature which crabs recognise and associate with prey value.  相似文献

Cardisoma guanhumi is the focus of an important artisanal fishery in Puerto Rico. Data on land crab landings point towards a dramatic decline in their abundance. This is cause for concern given the intrinsic value of the fishery and the important role these crabs play in coastal ecosystems. In this paper we examine the effect of harvesting and habitat quality on the abundance, survival, and size structure of C. guanhumi. To accomplish this we conducted a capture-mark-recapture study for a period of 18 months at three localities with minimal or no harvesting, and three with intense harvesting. Habitat quality at the six study sites was assessed by measuring vegetation composition-structure and litter biomass. We also conducted a leaf consumption experiment to evaluate leaf litter selectivity and limitation. Mean crab abundance differed significantly among sites, and this variation was significantly explained by differences in crab survival among sites. Sites with less harvesting tended to have higher survivorship and more crabs than sites where harvesting took place. Crabs mean size differed among study sites and was inversely related to abundance. Vegetation composition and structure, leaf litter standing stock and leaf-litter consumption differed among study sites. However, only some of these habitat characteristics are directly related to crab abundance or demography. There is a tendency for sites with a high leaf litter standing stock and large basal area to have the largest crabs but in low abundance. This study shows that C. guanhumi populations are very sensitive to increases in mortality that result from harvesting, and that the historical decline in abundance of this crab in Puerto Rico can be explained, in part, by an increase in trapping effort. Our results also indicate that C. guanhumi is a very plastic species, capable of occupying diverse types of coastal forests and a leaf litter generalist.  相似文献

The biological and economic values of coral reefs are highly vulnerable to increasing atmospheric and ocean carbon dioxide concentrations. We applied the COMBO simulation model (COral Mortality and Bleaching Output) to three major U.S. locations for shallow water reefs: South Florida, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii. We compared estimates of future coral cover from 2000 to 2100 for a “business as usual” (BAU) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions scenario with a GHG mitigation policy scenario involving full international participation in reducing GHG emissions. We also calculated the economic value of changes in coral cover using a benefit transfer approach based on published studies of consumers'' recreational values for snorkeling and diving on coral reefs as well as existence values for coral reefs. Our results suggest that a reduced emissions scenario would provide a large benefit to shallow water reefs in Hawaii by delaying or avoiding potential future bleaching events. For Hawaii, reducing emissions is projected to result in an estimated “avoided loss” from 2000 to 2100 of approximately $10.6 billion in recreational use values compared to a BAU scenario. However, reducing emissions is projected to provide only a minor economic benefit in Puerto Rico and South Florida, where sea-surface temperatures are already close to bleaching thresholds and coral cover is projected to drop well below 5% cover under both scenarios by 2050, and below 1% cover under both scenarios by 2100.  相似文献

The response characteristic of visual interneurons of the brain was studied in Locusta migratoria and Schistocerca gregaria. Alternating light and dark, moving dots, bars and striped patterns were used for stimulation (Fig. 3). These stimuli were recorded with a video system and replayed on TV-screens during the experiment to allow fast testing of the sensitivity of a neuron to different stimuli during the limited time of intracellular recording. Data were stored and analysed by computer. The neurons were anatomically identified by intracellular injection of Lucifer yellow. Neutral (non-visual) and several classes of spiking interneurons of the medulla and lobula sensitive to visual stimuli could be distinguished by anatomical and physiological characteristics (Figs. 1, 2). The visual cells respond either to light-on, or to light-off, flicker, moving small dots, bars or striped patterns (Figs. 2–6). One class is directionally sensitive to pattern movement either from back to front or into the reverse direction (horizontal cells; Figs. 7, 8) and may therefore be involved in optomotor flight control.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Dietrich Burkhardt on the occasion of his 60th birthday  相似文献

Summary The effect of temperature on the ability of neuromuscular junctions and muscle fibers to contract, release neurotransmitter, and maintein postsynaptic membrane properties, was measured in vivo and in vitro in claw closer muscles in stone crabsMenippe mercenaria (Say) and blues crabsCallinectes sapidus (Rathbun). In vivo muscle stress (defined as force generated per unit of muscle cross-sectional area) was measured in crabs of both species collected from northern populations (annual temperature range 2–30°C) and southern populations (annual temperature range 15–30°C). Muscle stress was compared between (1) crabs of both species maintained in the laboratory at 30°C (laboratory warmed); (2) crabs given a brief acclimation period (4 weeks for blue crabs; 7 weeks for stone crabs) at 8°C in the laboratory (laboratory colled), and (3) stone crabs that had been naturally acclimated from summer (30°C) to winter (8°C) temperatures over a 6 month period in the field (naturally cooled). No differences were found in the abilities of the northern and southern populations of either species to generate muscle stress when tested at summer temperatures (30°C) common to both populations. Northern and southern blue crabs produced similar levels of muscle stress whether laboratory warmed (30°C) or laboratory cooled (8°C). Conversely, northern and southern stone crabs showed significantly reduced muscle stress in laboratory cooled crabs compared with laboratory warmed crabs. Stone crabs from both populations generated the same amount of muscle stress after having been naturally cooled to 8°C as they had generated the previous summer (30°C).In vitro neuromuscular properties (i.e. (1) muscle stress as a measure of contractile ability; (2) excitatory junction potential (EJP) amplitude as a measure of neurotransmitter release; (3) specific membrane resistance (Rm) as a measure of postsynaptic membrane properties) were compared at 8, 20, and 30°C between northern cold acclimated (naturally cooled stone crabs and laboratory cooled blue crabs) and non-cold acclimated (laboratory cooled stone crabs. Muscle fibers in claws of stone crabs and blue crabs showing cold acclimation had higher Rm at 8°C than non-cold acclimated crabs. This higher Rm resulted in a broadening of EJP's which enhanced EJP summation, muscle fiber depolarization, and muscle stress.Abbreviations EJP excitatory junction potential - E r resting membrane potential - F e lacilitation - R m specific membrane resistance  相似文献

In the artificial habitat of an aquarium specimens of hermit crabs carrying commensal sea anemones gradually lose their anemones, surprisingly because the crabs frequently damage or eat them.

On the Mediterranean association Dardanus arrosor and Calliactis parasitica, the influence of feeding, of population density, or the activity of Dardanus towards Calliactis, and the presence or absence of a predator, were investigated as possible factors responsible for the disappearance of the anemone and the anomalous behavior of the crabs.

Both lack of food and high population density increased the numbers of anemones that disappeared. It was noted that these artificial conditions probably do not occur in the natural habitat. All freshly collected Dardanus (both sexes), and presumably all Dardanus in their natural habitat, are active in acquiring Calliactis but during 4–5 months in the aquarium most of this activity is lost.

In the presence of a probable predator, the octopus Eledone, these inactive crabs become active again in transferring anemones to their shells. This suggests that predation in the natural habitat is one of the factors responsible for the activity of the crab in acquiring anemones, at least in the association between Dardanus arrosor and Calliactis parasitica.  相似文献

The success of non-native species may depend on the genetic resources maintained through the invasion process. The Coqui ( Eleutherodactylus coqui ), a frog endemic to Puerto Rico, was introduced to Hawaii in the late 1980s via the horticulture trade, and has become an aggressive invader. To explore whether genetic diversity and population structure changed with the introduction, we assessed individuals from 15 populations across the Hawaiian Islands and 13 populations across Puerto Rico using six to nine polymorphic microsatellite loci and five dorsolateral colour patterns. Allelic richness ( R T) and gene diversity were significantly higher in Puerto Rico than in Hawaii populations. Hawaii also had fewer colour patterns (two versus three to five per population) than Puerto Rico. We found no isolation by distance in the introduced range, even though it exists in the native range. Results suggest extensive mixing among frog populations across Hawaii, and that their spread has been facilitated by humans. Like previous research, our results suggest that Hawaiian Coquis were founded by individuals from sites around San Juan, but unlike previous research the colour pattern and molecular genetic data (nuclear and mtDNA) support two separate introductions, one on the island of Hawaii and one on Maui. Coquis are successful invaders in Hawaii despite the loss of genetic variation. Future introductions may increase genetic variation and potentially its range.  相似文献

From infestation of lettuce with preinfective females to egg deposition, populations of Rotylenchulus reniformis from Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Lubbock and Weslaco, Texas; and Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, required 41, 13, 7, and 7 days at 15, 20, 25, and 34 C, respectively. No nematode infection occurred at 10 C with any R. reniformis population, and the population from Puerto Rico did not reproduce at 15 C. Nematode survival was not influenced by temperature, since populations from Texas and Louisiana survived for 6 months without a host at - 5 , - 1 , 4, and 25 C. Survival of R. reniformis was substantially influenced by soil moisture. Soil moistures greater than 7% (< 1 bar) aided nematode survival at storage temperature of 25 C, whereas moisture adversely affected nematode survival below freezing. Soil moisture below 4% (> 15 bars) favored nematode survival below freezing but adversely affected nematodes in soils stored at 25 C. Soil moisture effects on nematode survival were less accentuated at 4 and 0 C.  相似文献

Parasitism, offspring sex ratio and superparasitism of the facultative autoparasitoid Encarsia tricolor Foërster (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) when given access to arenae with different proportions of the primary host (Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood)) and two species of secondary hosts (E. tricolor and Encarsia formosa Gahan) were studied.Parasitism and offspring sex ratio were not affected by female age in the range 3–10 days old. When the secondary hosts were young E. tricolor pupae, eggs were mostly laid on primary hosts, so the offspring sex ratio was more female-biased than expected, and secondary hosts were not superparasitized at all. When the secondary hosts were fully grown E. formosa larvae, superparasitism was small and offspring sex ratio was more male-biased than expected. E. tricolor females were able to discriminate between hosts previously parasitized by themselves and non-parasitized hosts.  相似文献

Eggs of Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.) were routinely monitored in citrus groves at ten locations in Florida during 1997 and 1998 to study egg parasitism. One citrus location was studied in Puerto Rico. No native parasitoids were recovered from 1,337 D. abbreviatus egg masses studied in Florida citrus. In contrast, an average of 35.5% (range 12.5 to 68.8%) parasitism of egg masses was reported in Puerto Rico. The parasitoids Aprostocetus gala, Horismenus spp, and Quadrastichus haitiensis were recovered from the eggs of D. abbreviatusfstudied in Puerto Rico. The Horismenus parasitoids were suspected hyperparasitoids. Releases of the parasitoid Ceratogramma etiennei from Guadeloupe were initiated during 1998 at each of the Florida research sites. By the end of 1998, C. etiennei had been recovered from D. abbreviatus eggs at two of nine locations in Florida citrus. The parasitoid was recovered from 1 of 34 egg masses at one of these locations during the month of September and from 3 of 34 egg masses at the other location during the month of November. Whether or not C. etiennei establishes itself at one or more locations in Florida remains to be seen.  相似文献

Decomposition rates, initial chemical composition, and the relationship between initial chemistry and mass loss of fine roots and foliage were determined for two woody tropical species, Prestoea montana and Dacryodes excelsa, over a gradient of sites in two watersheds in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. At all locations, fine roots decayed significantly more slowly than foliage during the initial 6 months.Substrate quality of the initial tissue showed marked differences between roots and foliage when using cell wall chemistry, secondary chemistry and total elemental analysis as indices. Quantity of acid detergent fiber (ADF) (non-digestible cell wall fiber) and lignin content were higher for roots than leaves: D. excelsa roots had 55.3% ADF and 28.7% lignin while leaves had 36.2% ADF and 11.8% lignin; P. montana roots had 68.0% ADF and 26.8% lignin while leaves had 48.5% ADF and 16.1% lignin. Aluminum concentrations were higher in fine roots (843 mg kg–1 in D. excelsa, 1500 mg kg–1 in P. montana) than leaves (244 mg kg–1 in D. excelsa, 422 mg kg–1 in P. montana), while calcium concentrations were higher in foliage (5.5 mg g–1 in D. excelsa, 7.8 mg g–1 in P. montana) than roots (3.4 mg g–1 in D. excelsa, 3.1 mg g–1 in P. montana). Nitrogen did not show any trend with tissue or species type. A linear model between mass remaining after 6 months and initial tissue chemistry could be developed only for calcium (r2=0.64).  相似文献

To better understand how rainforest regenerates after agriculture I sampled the seed rain and seed bank, and set out seeds and seedlings, on microsites defined by distance to the forest in fields both in Puerto Rico and Ecuador. I found that (1) total seeds, species richness and life-form richness were twice as great in the Ecuador seed rain compared to Puerto Rico but Puerto Rico seeds were more evenly distributed among species and (2) total seedlings from the seed bank were similar between Puerto Rico and Ecuador, (3) the majority of seeds were lost to predation among all species and study sites, (4) seed disease was absent in P. aduncum and Miconia prasina, and no seeds germinated for Gonzalagunia spicata and P. riparia, (5) in Ecuador pathogenic disease claimed more seeds than germinated for all species, and Solanum ovalifolium was the only species that had seeds germinate but did not lose seeds to disease, (6) also in Ecuador, insect predation was significantly lower in the forest border for P. aduncum, and seed disease was significantly greater at the 10 m micro site for S. ovalifolium, (7) distance has a significant effect on seedling height and basal diameter, (8) losses of leaf area due to herbivory and pathogens were always low and (9) biomass and leaf specific mass were significantly reduced in the border and forest microsites. I conclude that Ecuador fields had more seeds, species, and life-forms than Puerto Rico fields, predation was the most severe post-dispersal seed filter in all fields, seeds that survived predation on Puerto Rico were lost either to disease or germination but to both mechanisms in Ecuador, all three seed mechanisms in Ecuador fields showed distance effects of seedling growth but not survivorship.  相似文献

The Puerto Rico population may be modeled as an admixed population with contributions from three continents: Sub-Saharan Africa, Ancient America, and Europe. Extending the study of the genetics of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to an admixed population such as Puerto Rico has the potential to shed light on IBD genes identified in studies of European populations, find new genes contributing to IBD susceptibility, and provide basic information on IBD for the care of US patients of Puerto Rican and Latino descent. In order to study the association between immune-related genes and Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) in Puerto Rico, we genotyped 1159 Puerto Rican cases, controls, and family members with the ImmunoChip. We also genotyped 832 subjects from the Human Genome Diversity Panel to provide data for estimation of global and local continental ancestry. Association of SNPs was tested by logistic regression corrected for global continental descent and family structure. We observed the association between Crohn’s disease and NOD2 (rs17313265, 0.28 in CD, 0.19 in controls, OR 1.5, p = 9×10−6) and IL23R (rs11209026, 0.026 in CD, 0.0.071 in controls, OR 0.4, p = 3.8×10−4). The haplotype structure of both regions resembled that reported for European populations and “local” continental ancestry of the IL23R gene was almost entirely of European descent. We also observed suggestive evidence for the association of the BAZ1A promoter SNP with CD (rs1200332, 0.45 in CD, 0.35 in controls, OR 1.5, p = 2×10−6). Our estimate of continental ancestry surrounding this SNP suggested an origin in Ancient America for this putative susceptibility region. Our observations underscored the great difference between global continental ancestry and local continental ancestry at the level of the individual gene, particularly for immune-related loci.  相似文献
