The greater rice weevil, Sitophilus zeamais, is a serious pest of stored grain. It chews a hole in the grain and deposits an egg inside. For the purpose of excavating a tunnel, these weevils are equipped with effective mandibulate mouthparts for penetrating and boring holes. The mouthparts of the weevil are a long slender snout, which consist of a labrum, a pair of mandibles, a pair of maxillae and a labium. Mothparts exhibit typical morphology of phytophagous coleopteran beetles and have characteristics of chewing mouthparts. Mandibles are connected to the head capsule through dicondyous articulation, which allows movement along one single rotating axis. Both labrum and labium are fused to the snout and form the upper and lower lips, respectively. Along the depressed surface of the snout, a number of short sensory hairs are sparsely arranged. The distal apexes of the maxillary and labial palpi are deeply depressed into a sensillar field, and only one type of the basiconic sensilla, which function as chemo‐ or gustatory receptors, occurs in both sexes.  相似文献

Focussing on the blood-feeding reduviid Rhodnius prolixus, we investigated the structure and function of the hypopharynx in (1) conducting the saliva towards the mouthparts and (2) bringing together the salivary pump and the stylets to ensure the difficult task of supplying the two closed antidromic streams of blood and saliva, while allowing the mouthparts to be moved forth and back during the feeding process. The distal apex of the hypopharynx forms a needle-like structure that is X-shaped in cross section. It arranges the interlocking of the maxillae in a manner resembling the fixed slider of a zip-lock. Further proximal, the hypopharynx extends into the maxillary food channel as a wide tongue. The salivary pump possesses two separate efferent ducts. The dorsal duct originates in the retrograde angle of the cupula (part of the salivarium) and conducts saliva directly into the maxillary salivary channel. The ventral duct originates at the distal opening of the cupula. It extends into a bag, the distal opening of which can be closed by a ventral bolster-like cuticle and opened by muscles. We show for the first time for heteropteran mouthparts that the saliva is not exclusively discharged into the maxillary salivary channel (via the dorsal efferent duct of the salivary pump), but that a large amount of saliva directly flows into the tube of the labium (via the ventral efferent duct of the salivary pump), which encloses the piercing stylets. However, within a short section, saliva may also pass from the ventral salivary duct into the maxillary salivary channel. Similar double salivary efferent ducts are present in the reduviids Triatoma dimidiata, T. infestans, Dipetalogaster maxima, Panstrongylus megistus, in the pyrrhocorid Pyrrhocoris apterus, and in the pentatomid Troilus luridus. Ricinuleid functional mouthparts are the cucullus, the chelicerae, the pedipalps, and the labrum. These structures are movably jointed to the rest of the prosoma, most likely protruded upon hydrostatic hemolymph pressure and retracted by prosomal muscles. Seta‐like protrusions from the labrum and the pedipalpal coxae form a sieve‐like filter inside the preoral cavity and the mouth. Although the tip of the labrum can be elevated upon muscle constriction, ingestion of large, solid food particles is unlikely. The mouth has a crescent‐shaped cross section. The cuticle‐lined, also crescent‐shaped pharynx is equipped with a large dilator muscle but lacks antagonistic constrictor muscles. It represents a precerebral sucking pump. The triangular to Y‐shaped, cuticle‐lined esophagus is equipped with constrictor and dilator muscles. Its posterior part represents a postcerebral sucking pump. Four blind ending diverticula ramify from the anterior prosomal part of the entodermal midgut tube. Two of these diverticula remain inside the prosoma and form few short branches. The other two extend through the pedicel into the opisthosoma and ramify and coil there. A stercoral pocket protrudes ventrally out of the midgut tube. The most distal part of the midgut tube is modified into a contractile rectal gland. Its secretions may have defensive or physiological functions. A short anal atrium is formed by the cuticle‐lined ectodermal hindgut which opens at the end of the three‐segmented metasoma. The spiny lobster Panulirus argus has a life cycle consisting of a long-term (~9-12 months) planktonic larval period with 11 larval stages (the phyllosoma), a short (<1 month?) planktonic-to-benthic transitional postlarval stage (the puerulus), and benthic juvenile and adult phases. The mouthparts and foregut during these stages were examined and described by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in an investigation of the species' developmental morphology, diet, and ecology. The phyllosoma mouthparts close to the esophagus are the labrum, mandibles, paragnaths, and first maxillae. The second maxillae and first and second maxillipeds are increasingly distant from the esophagus as the larva develops. The pair of asymmetrical mandibles bear many teeth and spines, and the molar processes form what appears to be an intricate toothed shear. The mandibles remain similar throughout the phyllosoma stages. During the molt into the puerulus, the mouthparts are greatly changed, and the second maxilla and the three maxillipeds join the other mouthparts near the esophagus. However, the transformation appears incomplete, and many of the mouthparts are not fully formed until the molt to juvenile completes their development. The phyllosoma foregut lacks a gastric mill and has but one chamber. In addition, the first two stages lack a gland filter. During the molt to puerulus, the foregut is greatly changed and subsequently is similar to typical decapod foreguts in having an anterior cardiac and posterior pyloric chamber. Only rudimentary internal armature is present. Following the molt to juvenile, the foregut is quite similar to that of the adult, which exhibits a substantial gastric mill. The 11 phyllosoma stages were separated into two groups (group A = stages 1-5, group B = stages 6-11) on the basis of changes in both mouthpart and foregut morphology. The puerulus has never been observed to feed. Nothing was observed in our investigations that would prevent feeding, though both mouthpart and foregut development appeared incomplete. The mouthpart and foregut structures of larval, postlarval and juvenile P. argus differ widely, possibly reflecting the extreme modifications for different habitats found among these life phases.  相似文献

Xantharus renatehaassae sp. nov. is described from a female taken at mesopelagic depth of the Antarctic Sound. This is the second species within the genus to be described and the first record ofXantharus in the southern hemisphere. A diagnosis of the genus is presented. Primarily, the structure of the maxillar aesthetascs showed thatXantharus belongs to the Scolecitrichidae, and not to the Phaennidae as was originally proposed. Its most outstanding generic feature relates to the structure of the distal segments of the short antennule with some plesiomorphic conditions retained by particular mouthparts.  相似文献

Specialized insect mouthparts, such as those of Drosophila, are derived from an ancestral mandibulate state, but little is known about the developmental genetics of mandibulate mouthparts. Here, we study the metamorphic patterning of mandibulate mouthparts of the beetle Tribolium castaneum, using RNA interference to deplete the expression of 13 genes involved in mouthpart patterning. These data were used to test three hypotheses related to mouthpart development and evolution. First, we tested the prediction that maxillary and labial palps are patterned using conserved components of the leg-patterning network. This hypothesis was strongly supported: depletion of Distal-less and dachshund led to distal and intermediate deletions of these structures while depletion of homothorax led to homeotic transformation of the proximal maxilla and labium, joint formation required the action of Notch signaling components and odd-skipped paralogs, and distal growth and patterning required epidermal growth factor (EGF) signaling. Additionally, depletion of abrupt or pdm/nubbin caused fusions of palp segments. Second, we tested hypotheses for how adult endites, the inner branches of the maxillary and labial appendages, are formed at metamorphosis. Our data reveal that Distal-less, Notch signaling components, and odd-skipped paralogs, but not dachshund, are required for metamorphosis of the maxillary endites. Endite development thus requires components of the limb proximal-distal axis patterning and joint segmentation networks. Finally, adult mandible development is considered in light of the gnathobasic hypothesis. Interestingly, while EGF activity is required for distal, but not proximal, patterning of other appendages, it is required for normal metamorphic growth of the mandibles.  相似文献

Corophium volutator Pallas is a small amphipod crustacean which burrows in inter-tidal mud on the British coast, and feeds on organic detritus, mainly vegetable, by selecting particles from the mud.
The alimentary canal consists of foregut, midgut and hindgut. The midgut is produced into a pair of anterior dorsal caeca, a pair of ventral caeca and a pair of posterior dorsal caeca.
The cardiac stomach has a large number of chitinous plates or ridges beset with hooks and spines for the trituration of food.
The pyloric stomach has long fine bristles which form an eifective filter apparatus and allow only fine particles of food to pass into the midgut, where they are digested and absorbed.

This study carried out on the posterior caeca of Orchestia in intermolt by means of light and electron microscopy shows that the diverticula of the midgut consist of two segments which are different from an anatomical point of view. The distal segment is in close relationship to the dorsal blood vessel, whereas the proximal segment, twice as long as the distal one, only touches the haemocoel. The cells of the distal segment are characterized by a brush border, some apical extrusions, a great number of ribosomes, rough endoplasmic reticulum, often associated with the mitochondria, the matrix of which is clear, high activity of the Golgi complexes, and a great development of extracellular channels. All these features indicate an activity in synthesizing proteins and transport. In the proximal segment, the cells are characterized by a striated border, reduced intercellular space, and especially by a great development of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum sometimes associated with mitochondria having a dense matrix. These diverse features indicate absorption ion and water transport. From an ultrastructural point of view, the posterior caeca of Orchestia cannot be considered homologous to the Malpighian tubules. Whereas during molting the posterior caeca of Orchestia are sites of calcium storage, during intermolt they are probably involved in the processes of water and mineral regulation and excretion.  相似文献

The pear psyllid, Cacopsylla chinensis (Yang et Li) (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), is one of the most significant economic pests of pear in China, causing direct damage through feeding by the highly specialized piercing–sucking mouthparts. The ultrastructural morphology and sensory apparatus of the mouthparts of the adult were examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The piercing–sucking mouthparts of C. chinensis are composed of a three-segmented labium with a deep groove in the anterior side, a stylet fascicle consisting of two mandibular and two maxillary stylets, and a pyramid-shaped labrum. Proximal to the labium, the stylet fascicle forms a large loop within a membranous crumena. Mandibles, with more than ten teeth on the external convex region, can be seen on the distal extremity. Smooth maxillary stylets are interlocked to form a larger food canal and a smaller salivary canal. One dendritic canal housing 2 dendrites is also found in each mandible. Two types of sensilla trichodea, four types of sensilla basiconica, single as well as groups of sensilla campaniformia, and oval flattened sensilla occur in different locations on the labium, whereas a kind of sensilla basiconica is at the junction of the labrum and anteclypeus. Sensilla trichodea and sensilla campaniformia, always present with denticles, are present on the middle labial segment. Three types of sensilla basiconica, two types of sensilla trichodea and two oval flattened sensilla are located on the distal labial segment. The mouthpart morphology and abundance of sensilla located on the labium in C. chinensis are illustrated, along with a brief discussion of their taxonomic and putative functional significance.  相似文献

Mouthparts are closely associated with the feeding behavior and feeding habits of insects. The features of mouthparts frequently provide important traits for evolutionary biologists and systematists. The short-faced scorpionflies (Panorpodidae) are distinctly different from other families of Mecoptera by their extremely short rostrum. However, their feeding habits are largely unknown so far. In this study, the mouthpart morphology of Panorpodes kuandianensis Zhong et al., 2011 was investigated using scanning electron microscopy and histological techniques. The mandibulate mouthparts are situated at the tip of the short rostrum. The clypeus and labrum are short and lack distinct demarcation between them. The epipharynx is furnished with sublateral and median sensilla patches. The blade-shaped mandibles are sclerotized and symmetrical, bearing apical teeth and serrate inner margins. The maxilla and labium retain the structures of the typical pattern of biting insects. The hirsute galea, triangular pyramid-shaped lacinia, and labial palps are described in detail at ultrastructural level for the first time. Abundant sensilla are distributed on the surface of maxillary and labial palps. The sexual dimorphism of mouthparts is found in Panorpodes for the first time, mainly exhibiting on the emargination of the labrum and apical teeth of mandibles. Based on the features of mouthparts, the potential feeding strategy and feeding mechanism are briefly discussed in Panorpodes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The fine structure and function of a honey bee's ( Apis mellifera Linn.) proventriculus were studied by scanning electron microscopy and video-recording. Our observations revealed that the proventriculus is used to engulf pollen and other particles which contaminate the nectar carried into the crop. The four lips are closed and opened, pulled backwards and straightened by the external circular muscles and internal longitudinal muscles. Combs of filiform-hairs (70 μm in length) located on the margins of the lips 'catch' and filter particles from the fluid. By repeated filtering, opening and closing actions of the hairs and lips, particles are filtered and collected in pouches between the ventricular folds to form boluses and are eventually passed into the midgut. In the present experiment, particle sizes ranging from 0.5 to 100 μm in diameter, including dandelion pollen ( Taraxacum officinale Web.), Torula yeast ( Candida utilis Lodder et Kreger-Van Rij), bee disease spores of Nosema apis Zander and Bacillus larvae White, and man-made particles can be filtered by the hairs. Small particles (0.23 μm in diameter) filter through the hair and return back to the fluid. Large particles (100–200 μm in diameter) are caught between the stylets of the mouthparts and are not ingested. These observations suggest that the particle size plays an important role in determining what can be taken by the mouthparts and the proventriculus and what can later be utilized as a food source by the bee. The role of the proventriculus in disease transmission is also discussed.  相似文献

The midgut of Rhynchosciara americana larvae consists of a cylindrical ventriculus from which protrudes two gastric caeca formed by polyhedral cells with microvilli covering their apical faces. The basal plasma membrane of these cells is infolded and displays associated mitochondria which are, nevertheless, more conspicuous in the apical cytoplasm. The anterior ventricular cells possess elaborate mitochondria-associated basal plasma membrane infoldings extending almost to the tips of the cells, and small microvilli disposed in the cell apexes. Distal posterior ventricular cells with long apical microvilli are grouped into major epithelial foldings forming multicellular crypts. In these cells the majority of the mitochondria are dispersed in the apical cytoplasm, minor amounts being associated with moderately-developed basal plasma membrane infoldings. The proximal posterior ventriculus represents a transition region between the anterior ventriculus and the distal posterior ventriculus. The resemblance between the gastric caeca and distal posterior ventricular cells is stressed by the finding that their microvilli preparations display similar alkaline phosphatase-specific activities. The results lend support to the proposal, based mainly on previous data on enzyme excretion rates, that the endo-ectoperitrophic circulation of digestive enzymes is a consequence of fluid fluxes caused by the transport of water into the first two thirds of midgut lumen, and its transference back to the haemolymph in the gastric caeca and in the distal posterior ventriculus.  相似文献

We studied the caecal contractile activity of the chicken (Gallus gallus) using single caeca that had been cannulated at their proximal and distal ends, and in paired caeca, maintained in situ on excised segments of gut that were cannulated at the colonic and small intestinal ends. Longitudinal and circular contractile patterns were characterised using high-definition spatiotemporal mapping. Low amplitude longitudinal contraction waves of frequency 14.1 cycles/min occurred in the absence of major contractile events. These were termed fast phasic and appeared to be mediated by slow waves. The nature of major spontaneous contractions occurring in the single caecum varied with the level of caecal distension. Type A contractions occurred when the caecum was not distended, originated from variable sites and propagated in both directions. Type B or C contractile events occurred when the caecum was moderately or fully distended, originated from a predominantly distal site and propagated proximally. On diameter maps, each type B event comprised a succession of contractions which had similar propagation speeds, frequency and direction to fast phasic contractions. Type C events were comprised of a succession of higher amplitude contractions with no appreciable propagation. Perfusion of saline via the colon resulted in fluid entering both caeca and the onset of aborad contractions in their proximal canals. Saline was also seen to flow between caeca during contractile events however no saline was seen to enter the small intestine as has been postulated by other workers.  相似文献

The profiles of the metal concentrations in the organs were site specific, but the concentrations in the pyloric caeca and body wall were usually greater in the populations in the Bay than those in the Gulf of Mexico.4. A morphological and functional study was made of the hepatic region in four enteropneust hemichordates: Schizocardiumsp., Ptychodera flava, Ptychodera bahamensis, and an undescribed ptychoderid from Maui, Hawaii, using light and electron microscopy. The hepatic region of these enteropneusts, as well as others, is characterized by a brown-green color and the presence of numerous caeca which represent dorsal extensions of the gut. These caeca extend above the dorsal surface of the worm and are organized into bilateral rows. Species-specific differences were noted in the organizational pattern of the sacculations within rows and the morphology and histology of individual sacculations. Numerous brown-green vesicles were discovered in both the epithelial cells and lumen of sacculations. Transmission electron microscopy revealed these bodies to be heterophagic vacuoles and residual bodies. Morphological evidence suggests that hepatic caeca are involved in intracellular digestion. Once endocytosed food particles are packaged as heterophagic vacuoles, and digestion has been completed, the residual bodies are packaged together and exuded from the cell in a spherule of cytoplasm.  相似文献

The body components of the primitive platyasterid starfish, Luidia clathrata (Say) have been characterized according to season, reproductive, and nutritional condition. The animal has been ‘reconstructed’ in terms of the wet and dry weights, the weight of organic matter, and the caloric equivalents of the body components in early summer (when there are no gonads and the pyloric caeca are small), in autumn (just prior to initiation of gonadal development and at maximal caeca size), and in early spring (at maximal gonad size). The body wall is always the most significant component in terms of wet and dry weights. In terms of organic matter and calories, the pyloric caeca are the most significant compartment in the fall and, together with the gonads, in the spring. On starvation for one month, the decrease in the size of the pyloric caeca is calculated to have produced 2.048 kcal. The energy requirement over the period, calculated from Qo2 values, is 2.112 kcal. There was no change in biochemical composition of the pyloric caeca with starvation, suggesting that energy production came about through cell destruction rather than preferential utilization of cellular nutrient stores. Lack of extreme change in the composition of the pyloric caeca with size through the year also suggests that energy deposition in the organ is primarily by change in cell number and not by cell size.  相似文献

Summary Pagurus rubricatus is predatory, detrivorous, macrophagous, and to a small degree, a suspension feeder. The crab searches for small invertebrates by digging shallow pits in the sediment. During this process it feeds on detritus obtained either directly from the sediment or scoured off gravel granules. Particles trapped by the dense setation of the 2nd and 3rd maxillipeds are brushed off and ingested.The distribution of the various types of setae on the mouthparts is mapped and structure of the mouthparts and their setae is correlated with function. Sediment collected by the pereiopods is brushed off by the endopodites of the 3rd maxillipeds and transferred to the inner mouthparts by the endopodites of the 2nd maxillipeds. The basipodites of the 1st maxillae form a filter screen through which particles of suitable size are pushed by the 2nd maxillae. Rejected particles are discarded by the exhalant stream via the currents generated by the exopodites of the maxillipeds. Specialized setae on the 2nd maxillae scour detritus from the surface of gravel granules applied to these appendages by the 2nd and 3rd maxillipeds. Interlocking setae from different appendages form a number of screens the main function of which is to retain material in the buccal region. The exopodite and endopodite of the 1st maxilliped and the endopodites of the 1st and 2nd maxillipeds form a channel which funnels the exhalant respiratory current away from the crab. The main grooming appendages are the endopodites of the 3rd maxillipeds, however, most of the other mouthparts have a self-cleaning function.  相似文献
