Fourteen species of seabirds representing three orders and five families breed in southern Africa. Nomadism in the breeding populations of 13 of these seabirds is examined. African Penguins Spheniscus demersus, Cape Gannets Morus capensis. Bank Cormorants Phalacrocorax neglectus, Whitebreasted Cormorants P. carbo and White Pelicans Pelecanus onocrotalus show strong fidelity to specific localities. Caspian Terns Sterna caspia change breeding localities at a low frequency; Cape Cormorants P. capensis, Hartlaub's Gulls Larus hartlaubii and Swift S. bergii and Roseate S. dougallii Terns at a higher frequency. At some localities, Bank Cormorants remain at the same breeding sites for extended periods, whereas Crowned Cormorants P. coronatus, Whitebreasted Cormorants, Kelp Gulls L. dominicanus, Hartlaub's Gulls, Damara Terns S. balaenarum, Swift Terns and Roseate Terns all alter breeding sites. Where space is not limiting, African Penguins may also change sites. Constraints on nomadism include strong attachment to traditional breeding localities, unwillingness to roost at non-breeding localities, and lack of suitable alternative nesting localities. Amongst causes of nomadism are excessive disturbance by humans and South African Fur Seals Arctocephalus pusillus and competition for breeding space, which have resulted in even the least nomadic of the species changing their breeding locations. Regularly nomadic species are likely to respond to environmental cues that enable them either to reduce cost of breeding or to increase reproductive output. Therefore, they are potentially useful indicators of ecological health. Nomadic breeders additionally have the ability to establish new breeding colonies. Some species have used artificial structures to expand their breeding range, and probably also to increase their overall populations. However, nomadic tendencies complicate the conservation of breeding activities. By contrast, breeding species with strong fidelity to traditional localities are more easily protected.  相似文献

Common Terns nested on 34 of 259 saltmarsh islands along 46 miles of Ocean County coastline, New Jersey. They nested on low islands of Spartina with less than 12%, windrow ranging in size from 0.6 to 108 acres. All islands selected by terns faced at least two miles of open water from at least one direction. Selection of islands seemed a response to vegetation, size, distance to the nearest island, distance to the nearest shore and exposure to open water. Of the 225 islands without nesting terns, only three fulfilled appropriate criteria. Eighty per cent of nests were situated on windrow. Terns laid larger clutches on windrow compated to those nesting in Spartina. Nearest neighbour distance on islands with low predation varied from 85 to 485 cm and was a function of space, vegetation, and the size of the island. Terns nested closer together on windrow compared with Spartina. Considering all colonies, the mean nearest neighbour distance negatively correlated with the number of nests. Skimmers, Oystercatchers, Laughing Gulls, and Herring Gulls nested in some of the tern colonies. All tern colonies on islands also occupied by nesting Herring Gulls suffered over 10% egg-loss by predation. Proportionally more nests were preyed upon in windrow than in Spartina. Clutch sizes in nests in windrow on islands with predation were significantly lower than those in windrow on islands without predation, even though clutch sizes in Spartina were similar on islands with and without predation. Flooding by exceptional high tides destroyed significantly more nests in Spartina than in windrow. The nests that survived in Spartina were built deeper, and their rim heights were higher than nests destroyed by tides. Choice of colony and nest sites is discussed in terms of the balance of two selection pressures: predation and tidal flooding. Tern nests on windrow are more exposed to predators, but safer from flooding, whereas those nests in Spartina are more susceptible to flooding and less vulnerable to predators. The recent invasion of Herring Gulls into Ocean County has significantly increased the rate of nest predation among affected colonies of Common Terns. It is possible that in future years the terns' behaviour may be modified in response to this new selective pressure.  相似文献

Electrocardiogram (ECG) analyses of Holter monitor recordings from a young California gray whale were performed to determine ECG waveform characteristics, evaluate the heart rate pattern for sinus arrhythmia, obtain resting heart rates at known body masses as the whale increased in size, and compare those heart rates with predicted heart rates from allometric equations. The PR and QRS intervals (475 ± 35 msec, 208 ± 24 msec, respectively, n= 20) support the concept (Meijler et al. 1992) that atrioventricular transmission and ventricular excitation times do not increase linearly in very large mammals. A sinus arrhythmia pattern at rest (apneic heart rates of 15–25 beats per min [bpm] and eupneic heart rates of 34–40 bpm) is consistent with a relative eupneic tachycardia and apneic bradycardia during diving activity of whales. The heart rate-body mass measurements (35–24 bpm at body masses of 3,591-8,200 kg) in this study (1) extend the range of allometric heart rate and body mass data in mammals a full order of magnitude, to almost 10,000 kg, (2) support the use of allometric equations (based primarily on mammals <1,000 kg in body mass) in estimating resting heart rates in whales, and (3) demonstrate that previously reported heart rates in large whales are not representative of resting heart rate, probably secondary to circumstances during measurement.  相似文献

We studied the predator-prey interaction between Kelp Gulls Larus dominicanus and Royal Terns Sterna maxima and Cayenne Terns Sterna eurygnatha at Punta León, Argentina, from 1990 to 1992. Kelp Gulls were the main predator of tern eggs in all 3 years, accounting for 99% of observed predations (n = 454). A total of 99% of predations occurred on peripheral tern nests. Total predation rate on both tern species was highest in 1990 and varied significantly between years, with between 0.01 and 0.03 cases of predation per hour. Predation rates in all years were significantly higher on Cayenne than on Royal Terns probably because the latter were significantly more aggressive towards gulls than were Cayenne Terns. Royal and Cayenne Terns displayed aggressively towards gulls at least once in 64% and 10% of the observation periods, respectively. Defence behaviour, such as attacking and chasing the predator, was used more frequently by Royal than Cayenne Terns (13.2% v 3.6%). Predation on tern eggs was restricted to only a few Kelp Gulls which nested close to the tern colony periphery, and 50% of the eggs that were stolen were taken by only two pairs during 1991 and 47% by three pairs in 1992. This suggests that the current expansion of the Kelp Gull numbers at Punta León might not necessarily result in a proportional increase in predation rate on both tern species. Stealing eggs from the ground was more successful than from the air (77% v 17%). The nesting strategy shown by Royal and Cayenne Terns at Punta León appears to be an important factor which reduced the impact on their breeding success of high potential predation pressure by gulls.  相似文献

Abstract Because of the differential amplitude of climatic oscillations, species living at northern latitudes are subject to more frequent and more severe range oscillations than species at southern latitudes. As a consequence, northern populations should, on average, be phylogenetically younger and possess less phylogeographical structure than closely related taxa further south. To test these predictions, we studied the mitochondrial‐genetic population structure of NW Palearctic Lesser Black‐backed Gulls (Larus fuscus group [=LBBG], five taxa) breeding at temperate to boreal latitudes from Iceland to the Taimyr Peninsula. Results were compared with those previously obtained (Liebers et al. 2001. Mol. Ecol. 10 : 2447) for more southerly breeding Yellow‐legged Gulls (Larus cachinnans group, six taxa from the Atlantic Islands to Mongolia). Sequences of the hypervariable region I (HVR‐I) of the mitochondrial control region revealed low within‐ and between‐taxon sequence divergence, little genetic variation, a shallow haplotype phylogeny and poor phylogeographical structure in LBBGs compared with Yellow‐legged Gulls. Haplotype frequencies among the five northern taxa formed a stepped cline with significant gene flow restriction between the forms heuglini and fuscus, probably indicating a secondary contact with (partial?) reproductive isolation. Western forms of LBBG, among which mitochondrial gene flow appears unrestricted, show genetic signs of postglacial range expansion and population growth. The Larus fuscus group is derived from a cachinnans‐like ancestral population, probably in the Aralo‐Caspian basin, and spread from east (NW Siberia) to west within the Palearctic.  相似文献

Background

Use of rate adaptive atrioventricular (AV) delay remains controversial in patients with biventricular (Biv) pacing. We hypothesized that a shortened AV delay would provide optimal diastolic filling by allowing separation of early and late diastolic filling at increased heart rate (HR) in these patients.

Methods

34 patients (75 ± 11 yrs, 24 M, LVEF 34 ± 12%) with Biv and atrial pacing had optimal AV delay determined at baseline HR by Doppler echocardiography. Atrial pacing rate was then increased in 10 bpm increments to a maximum of 90 bpm. At each atrial pacing HR, optimal AV delay was determined by changing AV delay until best E and A wave separation was seen on mitral inflow pulsed wave (PW) Doppler (defined as increased atrial duration from baseline or prior pacemaker setting with minimal atrial truncation). Left ventricular (LV) systolic ejection time and velocity time integral (VTI) at fixed and optimal AV delay was also tested in 13 patients. Rate adaptive AV delay was then programmed according to the optimal AV delay at the highest HR tested and patients were followed for 1 month to assess change in NYHA class and Quality of Life Score as assessed by Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire.

Results

81 AV delays were evaluated at different atrial pacing rates. Optimal AV delay decreased as atrial paced HR increased (201 ms at 60 bpm, 187 ms at 70 bpm, 146 ms at 80 bpm and 123 ms at 90 bpm (ANOVA F-statistic = 15, p = 0.0010). Diastolic filling time (P < 0.001 vs. fixed AV delay), mitral inflow VTI (p < 0.05 vs fixed AV delay) and systolic ejection time (p < 0.02 vs. fixed AV delay) improved by 14%, 5% and 4% respectively at optimal versus fixed AV delay at the same HR. NYHA improved from 2.6 ± 0.7 at baseline to 1.7 ± 0.8 (p < 0.01) 1 month post optimization. Physical component of Quality of Life Score improved from 32 ± 17 at baseline to 25 ± 12 (p < 0.05) at follow up.

Conclusions

Increased heart rate by atrial pacing in patients with Biv pacing causes compromise in diastolic filling time which can be improved by AV delay shortening. Aggressive AV delay shortening was required at heart rates in physiologic range to achieve optimal diastolic filling and was associated with an increase in LV ejection time during optimization. Functional class improved at 1 month post optimization using aggressive AV delay shortening algorithm derived from echo-guidance at the time of Biv pacemaker optimization.  相似文献

The characteristics of autonomic nervous activity were examined on captive great cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo hanedae, using a power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. Heart rates were calculated from recordings of the electrocardiograms of the birds via embarked data loggers. We investigated the effects of blockades of the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous systems using the indices of autonomic nervous activity such as high frequency (0.061–1.5 Hz) component, low frequency (0.02–0.060 Hz) component and the low frequency power component to high frequency power component ratio. Resting heart rate (85.5 ± 6.1 bpm) was lower than the intrinsic heart rate (259.2 ± 15.3 bpm). The heart rate drastically increased after the injection of the parasympathetic nervous blocker, on the other hand it slightly decreased after the injection of the sympathetic nervous blocker. The sympathetic, parasympathetic and net autonomic nervous tones calculated from heart rate with and without blockades were 40.9 ± 27.6, −44.5 ± 7.4 and −29.5 ± 9.0%, respectively. The effect of the parasympathetic nervous blockade on low frequency and high frequency power was greater than that of the sympathetic nervous blockade. Those data suggested that the parasympathetic nervous activity was dominant for great cormorants.  相似文献

目的:探讨儿童完全性心动过速性心肌病(pTIC)的临床特点、治疗及预后。方法:回顾分析2009年1月至2016年10月安徽省儿童医院心内科收治的15例完全性心动过速性心肌病患儿的临床表现、心功能、心电图、心脏彩超的特点,观察心律失常控制后的心室率、心脏左室内径大小及心功能恢复情况。结果:15例pTIC患儿以室上性快速心律失常多见(14例),10例单纯药物治疗,3例接受射频消融转为窦性心律,2例失访。随访半年至3年与治疗前比较心室率明显下降[(116±27)次/分vs.(189±28)次/分]、NT-proBNP降低[(404±355)pg/mL vs.(6280±3155)pg/mL]、心脏左室舒张末内径变小[(3.12±0.48)cm vs.(3.69±0.70)cm]、左室射血分数升高[(57.9±9.3)%vs.(42.2±9.5)%]、改良ROSS评分下降[1(0-5)分vs.7(4-10)分]。结论:儿童pTIC由各种快速心律失常引起,心脏扩大和心功能障碍可完全恢复,早期识别、有效治疗的儿童pTIC长期预后良好。  相似文献

Layered low‐dimensional perovskite structures employing bulky organic ammonium cations have shown significant improvement on stability but poorer performance generally compared to their 3D counterparts. Here, a mixed passivation (MP) treatment is reported that uses a mixture of bulky organic ammonium iodide (iso‐butylammonium iodide, iBAI) and formammidinium iodide (FAI), enhancing both power conversion efficiency and stability. Through a combination of inactivation of the interfacial trap sites, characterized by photoluminescence measurement, and formation of an interfacial energetic barrier by which ionic transport is reduced, demonstrated by Kelvin probe force microscopy, MP treatment of the perovskite/hole transport layer interface significantly suppresses photocurrent hysteresis. Using this MP treatment, the champion mixed‐halide perovskite cell achieves a reverse scan and stabilized power conversion efficiency of 21.7%. Without encapsulation, the devices show excellent moisture stability, sustaining over 87% of the original performance after 38 d storage in ambient environment under 75 ± 20% relative humidity. This work shows that FAI/ i BAI, is a new and promising material combination for passivating perovskite/selective‐contact interfaces.  相似文献

White Terns Gygis alba breed throughout the year on Aride Island but show a marked preference to nest during the northwest monsoon (November–March), when interspecific competition and also marine productivity are considered to be lower. In this study we investigated and compared breeding and foraging parameters of White Terns between the northwest and southeast (May–September) monsoons to assess whether interspecific competition affected foraging activity and explained the timing of breeding of White Terns. Goatfish (Mullidae) dominated the diet of White Terns and no significant differences were found in diet composition between the northwest and southeast monsoons. Similar diets and patterns of food provisioning of White Terns between the two monsoons do not support the hypothesis of strong exploitation competition during the southeast monsoon. On the other hand, foraging behaviour and frequency of capture attempts of White Terns differed between the two monsoons. The percentages of multi‐species flocks with White Terns and of large flocks with more than 25 noddies Anous and terns Onychoprion were significantly higher during the southeast monsoon. Moreover, capture attempt frequencies of White Terns foraging in multi‐species flocks were lower than those of solitary individuals, and both solitary and flocking White Terns had significantly lower capture attempt frequencies during the southeast monsoon in comparison with the northwest monsoon. These results suggest that interference competition depresses foraging activity of flock‐foraging White Terns, particularly during the southeast monsoon, which could potentially explain why White Terns breed preferentially during the northwest monsoon. However, and despite avoiding interference competition, White Terns nesting during the northwest monsoon did not show higher breeding success than those nesting during the southeast monsoon. Other hypotheses that might explain the preference of White Terns for breeding during the northwest monsoon, such as avoidance of agonistic interactions with Lesser Noddies Anous tenuirostris at nest sites, should also be investigated.  相似文献

Interspecific competition is an important process structuring ecological communities, however, it is difficult to observe in nature. We used an occupancy modelling approach to evaluate evidence of competition between yellow‐billed (Gavia adamsii) and Pacific (G. pacifica) loons for nesting lakes on the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska. With multiple years of data and survey platforms, we estimated dynamic occupancy states (e.g. rates of colonization or extinction from individual lakes) and controlled for detection differences among aircraft platforms and ground survey crews. Results indicated that yellow‐billed loons were strong competitors and negatively influenced the occupancy of Pacific loons by excluding them from potential breeding lakes. Pacific loon occupancy was conditional on the presence of yellow‐billed loons, with Pacific loons having almost a tenfold decrease in occupancy probability when yellow‐billed loons were present and a threefold decrease in colonization probability when yellow‐billed loons were present in the current or previous year. Yellow‐billed and Pacific loons co‐occurred less than expected by chance except on very large lakes or lakes with convoluted shorelines; variables which may decrease the cost of maintaining a territory in the presence of the other species. These results imply the existence of interspecific competition between yellow‐billed and Pacific loons for nesting lakes; however, habitat characteristics which facilitate visual and spatial separation of territories can reduce competitive interactions and promote species co‐occurrence.  相似文献

ABSTRACT For seabirds raising young under conditions of limited food availability, reducing chick provisioning and chick growth rates are the primary means available to avoid abandonment of a breeding effort. For most seabirds, however, baseline data characterizing chick growth and development under known feeding conditions are unavailable, so it is difficult to evaluate chick nutritional status as it relates to foraging conditions near breeding colonies. To address this need, we examined the growth and development of young Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia), a cosmopolitan, generalist piscivore, reared in captivity and fed ad libitum and restricted (ca. one‐third lower caloric intake) diets. Ad libitum‐fed chicks grew at similar rates and achieved a similar size at fledging as previously documented for chicks in the wild and had energetic demands that closely matched allometric predictions. We identified three general characteristics of food‐restricted Caspian Tern chicks compared to ad libitum chicks: (1) lower age‐specific body mass, (2) lower age‐specific skeletal and feather size, such as wing chord length, and (3) heightened levels of corticosterone in blood, both for baseline levels and in response to acute stress. Effects of diet restriction on feather growth (10–11% slower growth in diet‐restricted chicks) were less pronounced than effects on structural growth (37–52% slower growth) and body mass (24% lower at fledging age), apparently due to preferential allocation of food resources to maintain plumage growth. Our results suggest that measurements of chick body mass and feather development (e.g., wing chord or primary length) or measurement of corticosterone levels in the blood would allow useful evaluation of the nutritional status of chicks reared in the wild and of food availability in the foraging range of adults. Such evaluations could also inform demography studies (e.g., predict future recruitment) and assist in evaluating designated piscivorous waterbird conservation (colony) sites.  相似文献

Female reproductive performance can be strongly affected by male care, so that breeding time, a trait expressed only by females, can be seen as one trait determined by both male and female genotypes. Animal model analyses of a 46‐year study of red‐billed gulls (Larus novaehollandiae scopulinus) revealed that laying date was not heritable in females (h2 = 0.001 ± 0.030), but significantly so in males (h2 = 0.134 ± 0.029). Heritability of breeding time in males probably reflects genetic variability in some other trait such as courtship feeding ability. In line with predictions of evolutionary models incorporating indirect genetic effects, the strong and consistent directional selection for advanced breeding time has not resulted in detectable selection response in males. Our results demonstrate that a female trait is largely determined by genetic characteristics of its mate, and hence, any evolutionary change in red‐billed gull breeding time depends critically on genetic variation in males.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Defining the at‐sea foraging movements of seabirds is fundamental to understanding their ecology and can also be important in assessing the potential impact of marine developments such as offshore wind farms (OWFs). Surveys of predefined areas using aerial or boat‐based transect surveys may not allow adequate assessment of the relative importance of different areas to birds. Individual‐based satellite or radio‐telemetry can be effective in identifying foraging ranges and preferred areas, but may not be suitable for some species. We developed a method to determine the foraging movements of breeding terns (Sterna spp.) by visually tracking individuals using a rigid‐hulled inflatable boat (RHIB). Sandwich Terns (S. sandvicensis), Common Terns (S. hirundo), and Arctic Terns (S. paradisaea) were tracked from colonies in Norfolk and Anglesey, United Kingdom, from 2006 to 2008. The proportion of complete (from and to colony) trips varied from 29–60% among species, years, and colonies. Individual Sandwich Terns were tracked for periods up to 126 min over distances up to 72 km and as far as 54 km from the breeding colony, further than Arctic (up to 57 km and 29 km from the colony) and Common (to 29 km and <9 km from the colony) terns. Mean values were much smaller. Multivariate modeling of Sandwich Tern foraging trips indicated that flight speeds >50 km/hr coupled with greater distances from shore (>25 km) significantly reduced the likelihood of tracking a bird for an entire foraging trip. Use of different boats that differ in speed and performance may alleviate such issues. Visual tracking allowed us to collect data on foraging behavior, flight height, and prey capture rates, and also permitted comparisons between species. Our results indicate that visual tracking may be an effective means of determining the foraging movements and at‐sea behavior of a variety of short‐ranging, day‐active seabirds.  相似文献

Methods commonly used to estimate the number of nests and size of the breeding population at colonies of Least Terns (Sternula antillarum) and other waterbirds include walk‐through counts of nests (ground‐nest counts) and counts of incubating adults from the colony perimeter (incubating‐adult counts). The bias and variance of different methods and the comparability of repeated surveys versus once‐annual censuses are poorly understood. Our objectives were to assess (1) the potential bias and variation of the more rapid incubating‐adult counts compared to the time‐intensive, and presumably more accurate, ground‐nest counts, and (2) how accurately a once‐annual census captured peak nesting abundance. We studied nine Least Tern colonies at Cape Lookout National Seashore (CALO), North Carolina, from April to August 2010–2012. We analyzed observer and survey method agreement with concordance correlation coefficients (ρc). We deployed time‐lapse cameras at 156 nests and used repeated‐measures logistic regression to determine if the proportion of time spent incubating varied with colony, time of day, or time of season. We found substantial agreement in abundance estimates of Least Tern nests and incubating adults between observers and survey methods, and among different times of day and seasons (all comparisons ρc > 0.97). Least Terns incubated eggs 94% of the time on average during daylight hours, irrespective of colony, nesting stage, or month. Although the nesting peak at CALO occurred during the recommended census period for Least Terns, abundance estimates for surveys conducted at different times during that period varied by as much as 39%. We recommend conducting incubating‐adult counts to estimate nest and breeding population abundance of Least Terns or other waterbirds when vegetation or dunes do not obstruct views of nesting colonies. In addition, given the variation in abundance estimates for surveys conducted at different times during the recommended survey period, incubating‐adult counts should be performed at least twice during the census period, with the maximum count reported as peak nest abundance.  相似文献

Intraclutch egg size variation may non‐adaptively result from nutritional/energetic constraints acting on laying females or may reflect adaptive differential investment in offspring in relation to laying/hatching order. This variation may contribute to size hierarchies among siblings already established due to hatching asynchrony, and resultant competitive asymmetries often lead to starvation of the weakest nestling within a brood. The costs in terms of chick mortality can be high. However, the extent to which this mortality is egg size‐mediated remains unclear, especially in relation to hatching asynchrony which may operate concomitantly. I assessed effects of egg size and hatching asynchrony on nestling development and survival of Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus), where the smaller size and later hatching of c‐eggs may represent a brood‐reduction strategy. To analyze variation in egg size, I recorded the laying order and laying date of 870 eggs in 290 three‐egg clutches over a 3‐yr period (2010–2012). I measured hatchlings and monitored growth and survival of 130 chicks from enclosed nests in 2011 and 2012. The negative effect of laying date (β = ?0.18 ± SE 0.06, P = 0.002) on c‐egg size possibly reflected the fact that late breeders were either low quality or inexperienced females. The mass, size, and condition of hatchling Herring Gulls were positively related to egg size (all P < 0.0001). C‐chicks suffered from increased mortality risk during the first 12 d, identified as the brood‐reduction period in my study population. Although intraclutch variation in egg size was not directly related to patterns of chick mortality, I found that smaller relative egg size interactively increased differences in relative body condition of nestlings, primarily brought about by the degree of hatching asynchrony during this brood‐reduction period. Thus, the value of relatively small c‐eggs in Herring Gulls may lie in reinforcing brood reduction through effects on nestling body condition. A reproductive strategy Herring Gulls might have adopted to maintain a three‐egg clutch, but that also enables them to adjust the number of chicks they rear relative to the prevailing environmental conditions and to their own condition during the nestling stage.  相似文献

Given the high productivity of Interior Least Terns (Sternula antillarum athalassos) and Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) on constructed off‐channel nesting sites along the central Platte River in Nebraska, USA, and the possibility of creating similar habitats at other locations in their breeding range, understanding how these species use off‐channel nesting habitats is important. We used data collected along the central Platte River in Nebraska, USA, over a 15‐year period (2001–2015), and a discrete‐choice modeling framework to assess the effects of physical site attributes and inter‐ and intraspecific associations on off‐channel nest‐site selection by Interior Least Terns and Piping Plovers. We found that Piping Plovers avoided nesting near each other, whereas colonial Interior Least Terns selected nest sites near those of conspecifics. In addition, the relative probability of use for both species was maximized when distance to the nearest predator perch was ≥ 150 m and elevation above the waterline was ≥ 3 m. Probability of use for nesting by Interior Least Terns increased as distance to water increased, whereas the probability of use by Piping Plovers was maximized when distance to water was ~50 m. Our results suggest that important features of constructed, off‐channel nesting sites for both species should include no potential predator perches within 150 m of nesting habitat and nesting areas at least 3 m above the waterline. Efficient site designs for Interior Least Terns would be circular, maximizing the area of nesting habitat away from the shoreline, whereas an effective site design for Piping Plovers would be more linear, maximizing the area of nesting habitat near the waterline. An efficient site design for both species would be lobate, incorporating centralized nesting habitat for Interior Least Terns and increased access to foraging areas for nesting and brood‐rearing Piping Plovers.  相似文献

Haldane's rule predicts that particularly high fitness reduction should affect the heterogametic sex of interspecific hybrids. Despite the fact that hybridization is widespread in birds, survival of hybrid individuals is rarely addressed in studies of avian hybrid zones, possibly because of methodological constraints. Here, having applied capture–mark–recapture models to an extensive, 19‐year‐long data set on individually marked birds, we estimate annual survival rates of hybrid individuals in the hybrid zone between herring (Larus argentatus) and Caspian (Larus cachinnans) gulls. In both parental species, males have a slightly higher survival rate than females (model‐weighted mean ± SE: herring gull males 0.88 ± 0.01, females 0.87 ± 0.01, Caspian gull males 0.88 ± 0.01, females 0.87 ± 0.01). Hybrid males do not survive for a shorter time than nonhybrid ones (0.88 ± 0.01), whereas hybrid females have the lowest survival rate among all groups of individuals (0.83 ± 0.03). This translates to a shorter adult (reproductive) lifespan (on average by 1.7–1.8 years, i.e. ca 25%) compared with nonhybrid females. We conclude that, in line with Haldane's rule, the lower survival rate of female hybrids may contribute to selection against hybrids in this hybrid zone.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Von April bis Juli 1993 wurden in der südöstlichen Nordsee von Schiffen aus auf 300 m breiten Transekten Seevögel kartiert. Dabei konnte für einige Arten der Bestand abseits des Wattenmeeres und der Küste hinlänglich genau geschätzt werden. Baßtölpel (800 Ind.), Eissturmvogel (8000 Ind.), Dreizehenmöwe (4200 Ind.) und Trottellumme (3100 Ind.) kamen fast ausschließlich in der Nähe des Brutplatzes Helgoland und weiter seewärts vor. Herings- (25 000 Ind.) und Silbermöwe (2100 Ind.) waren weit verbreitet; die Heringsmöwe konzentrierte sich weiter entfernt von der Küste als die Silbermöwe und trat in hohen Dichten vor allem in der Nähe von Fischkuttern auf. Mantelmöwen (1200 Ind.) wurden vor allem im Südosten des Untersuchungsgebietes regelmäßig, aber in stets geringer Anzahl festgestellt. Sturm- und Lachmöwe wurden fast nur im Wattenmeer in allerdings oftmals hoher Dichte registriert. Die Flußseeschwalbe war stark an die Kolonien nahe der Küste gebunden, während die Brandseeschwalbe auch weiter auf See beobachtet wurde.
The distribution and abundance of selected seabird species in the southeastern North Sea in the breeding season
Seabirds were counted from ships on 300 m wide transects in the southeastern North Sea between April and July 1993. For some species the numbers off the coast and off the Waddensea area could be estimated. Gannet (Morus bassanus, 800 individuals), Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis, 8000 ind.), Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla, 4200 ind.) and Common Guillemot (Uria aalge, 3100 ind.) occurred with few exceptions only in the vicinity of the breeding site on Helgoland and further towards the open sea. Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus, 25000 ind.) and Herring Gull (Larus argentatus, 2100 ind.) were widely distributed: Lesser Black-backed Gulls concentrated in larger distances from the coast than Herring Gulls did. They were found in high densities above all near trawlers. Great Black-backed Gulls (Larus marinus, 1200 ind.) were seen regularly but always in low numbers in the southeastern part of the study area. Common Gull (Larus canus) and Black-headed Gull (Larus ridibundus) were observed almost exclusively in the Wadden Sea but in sometimes remarkably high densities. Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) were more or less confined to the area of their breeding colonies whereas Sandwich Terns (Sterna sandvicensis) were also found further out to the sea.

ABSTRACT Long‐billed Curlews (Numenius americanus) are shorebirds of high conservation concern in North America. Populations have declined in the last 150 yr primarily due to habitat loss and conversion. We conducted a 2‐yr study to estimate the density and statewide abundance of breeding Long‐billed Curlews in Nebraska during 2008 and 2009. Surveys were conducted during the prenesting period in April when Long‐billed Curlews were likely to be detected. We used a simple random sample of roadside survey routes (N= 39), each consisting of 40 5‐min point‐counts at 800‐m intervals. We modeled detection probability and found that wind speed negatively affected detectability, but found no evidence of either year effects or observer bias. We estimated there were 0.0038 Long‐billed Curlews per hectare (0.38 Long‐billed Curlews per km2) along survey routes and, by extrapolation, estimated there were 23,909 (SE = 1685; 95% CI: 20,810—27,471) Long‐billed Curlews in Nebraska. Our population estimate suggests that ~15 to 22% of the United States population of Long‐billed Curlews is found in Nebraska. Curlews were not evenly distributed within our survey area, with the highest densities in the central Sandhills, an area dominated by grass‐stabilized sand dunes and shallow wetlands, and the lowest densities in predominantly agricultural areas. Because Long‐billed Curlews in Nebraska face many potential threats resulting from land‐use changes, monitoring of the breeding population should be continued. Our survey method was efficient and yielded interpretable results; other states or regions should consider adopting this approach for estimating curlew abundance.  相似文献
