The zygaenid Pryeria sinicaMoore and the ichneumonid Agrothereutes minousubaeNakanishi form a one host—one parasitoid system in nature. Their seasonal life cycles were investigated by laboratory experiments and field observations, and the life-cycle adaptation of the parasitoid to its host was examined. The moth is univoltine. The larva hatches from mid-February to mid-March and feeds on leaf buds and young leaves of ever green Euonymus japonicusThunb . The thermal constants for completing the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th larval instars and prepupal stage were 85.6, 80.5, 85.2, 177,0 and 197.6 degree-days, respectively. The prepupa and pupa vulnerable to the attack by the parasitoid occurred from mid-April to early May and from mid- to late May, respectively. Diapause in the parasitoid is facultative and occurs in the eonymphal stage. The photoperiodic response for this diapause was a long-day type with a critical photoperiod of 13 hr 40 min at 20°C, but it was not expressed at 25°C, most larvae entering diapause irrespective of photoperiod. About 19, 120, 82 and 112 degree-days above 7°C were required to complete the egg, larval, prepupal and pupal development, respectively. These data were superimposed on the photothermograph of Fukuoka, and it is predicted that the 1st adult eclosion would occur in late April and the partial 2nd adult eclosion in early June. The prediction was supported by field observations. The adult eclosion of the parasitoid synchronized well with the apperance of prepupae and pupae of the moth. The parasitoid has two types of seasonal life cycle, one generation and two generations a year. Both types have an extremely long dormant period of 10–11 months due to aestivo-hibernation. This seasonal life cycle enables the parasitoid to maintain its population when the host is in short supply.  相似文献

Investigations of the reproductive biology, life cycle and populationdynamics have been undertaken to assess the potential of Pomaceaurceus as a culture species in Trinidad. The species is dioeciousand evidence from microscopic gonad analyses, together withmaturity indices and size frequency distributions in the population, all indicate that the reproductive cycle is annual. Adults spawnat the end of the rainy season months. Hatching and early developmentof the young occur in the dry season (January to May) whileadult females aestivate. The total developmental period variedbetween 22 to 30 days. Mean fecundity is 54 eggs/female witha range of 21 to 93 for egg masses deposited in the field andthose produced under laboratory conditions. *Present address: Zoology Dept., University of Aberdeen, TillydroneAve., Aberdeen AB9 2TN. Some problems in the embryogenesis of Habrotrocha Rosa Donner 1949   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Several parameters connected with the biology of H. rosa were investigated under laboratory conditions: average life span (20 days) divided into three characteristic stages, mean number of eggs laid (30 eggs) and average time of egg development (31.5 hours). Ontogenesis was studied (until the stage of early organogenesis) and a spiral type of cleavage and epibolic gastrulation were observed. The paper also presents data on the origin of the digestive system and sex cells.  相似文献

Larval and adult Pteronarcys scotti Ricker were collected from a mountain stream in northwestern South Carolina, USA. The pattern of larval growth indicated a semivoltine life cycle. Emergence occurred in April and early May, and small larvae first appeared in May. Sexual dimorphism in adult size was apparent; males were 0.8 as large as females in head capsule width.

Female larvae possess a midventral notch on the eighth abdominal segment that can be used to sex larvae as small as 2.5 mm in head width. Female larvae as small as 1 mm in head width have a midventral break in the posterior setal row of segment 8. These characters are illustrated.  相似文献

Amblyomma incisum Neumann is a major tick species in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Tapir is the main host for adult ticks and a high aggressiveness of nymphs to humans has been reported. In this work data on the biology and life cycle of this tick species is presented for the first time. It was shown that horse is a suitable host for A. incisum adults and rabbit for larvae and nymphs. It was also shown that A. incisum is a big tick species (mean engorged female weight of 1.96 g) with a long life cycle which lasts 262.3 days when maintained at 27°C and 85% RH. These laboratory conditions were, however, inappropriate and egg hatching rate (1.2%) was very low. Nevertheless egg hatching of ticks in a forest patch increased considerably (72.2%) indicating that this A. incisum population is highly dependent on a forest-like environment.  相似文献

Key demographic traits in insect herbivores (survival, growth, and egg production) are often responsive to variation in diet quality, especially to dietary nitrogen (N) levels. Soluble carbohydrates may also be limiting. Using defined diets under controlled laboratory conditions, we examined survival, growth, and egg production in response to a range of diet qualities in adult females of a grass-feeding grasshopper Ageneotettix deorum (Scudder). Diets varied factorially within naturally occurring ranges of total N (1–7%) and carbohydrate (4–27%) levels. N concentrations significantly impacted weight gain, egg production rate, the elapsed time until the first egg pod, and the time between the first and second egg pod. These responses were typically quadratic in nature with a maximum response near 4–5% total N. The rate of pod production rather than number of eggs per pod best explained changes in reproductive rate. Dietary carbohydrate levels seldom exerted a significant impact on demographic parameters except when interacting with N on survival, egg weight, and the period between egg pods. Clearly, factors that alter the availability of quality diet, especially total N levels, can contribute to demographic responses in A. deorum. Lycorma delicatula is an invasive insect species in Korea, and its populations are increasing. It sucks plant sap and can cause withering of the whole trees. To prevent damage to fruit trees, it is important to determine the behavioral characteristics of L. delicatula. We monitored migration patterns and host plant preferences, from the egg mass on the tree bark, through egg hatching to egg laying. Most eggs hatched between 0500 h and 0800 h. The nymphs ascended trees until they reached the leaves. They often fell to the ground because of physical factors, such as wind, but then ascended the trees again on the upper sides of the branches. Their falling-ascending cycle became longer as their arolia developed. The host preference changed over the course of its growth, from a broad range of plant species at the early nymph stage to a few plant species, such as Ailanthus altissima at the adult stage. We summarize the life cycle behavior as follows. Initially, there is a short-term cycle of falling and ascending, which becomes longer as the nymphs age. The other cycle is a yearly cycle of host plant preferences, with broad host preference in the early nymph stage and a narrower host preference in the adult stage. Knowledge of this cyclic behavior can be used to prevent the rapid expansion of L. delicatula populations in orchards.  相似文献

Life cycle, feeding habits and nymphal density of a population of Ephoron virgo from the Bormida river (Northwestern Italy) were studied. Nymphs were present in the river from the beginning of May until August, with the highest density of nymphs recorded at the end of May–beginning of June. The life cycle was univoltine and the nymphal growth was fast. During the life cycle, an obligatory egg diapause occurs and individuals remain in this stage for up to nine months. Nymphs fed mainly on detritus, although mineral matter constituted a considerable percentage of the gut contents, predominantly in smaller nymphs.  相似文献

The biology of the weevil Hylobitelus xiaoi Zhang was studied in both field and laboratory in Shangyou, Jiangxi Province, China. This species required 2 yr to complete one generation with overwintering by adults in pupal chambers and larvae in galleries in the bark of host trees. Adults emerged from early March to early April and fed on the inner bark of branches of the trees. Adults fly little. Adults exhibited a diel periodicity, climbing up the trees around sunset and returning to the tree base the next morning. The mean preovipostion period was 46 d. Oviposition commenced in early May and ended in late August. The average fecundity per female was 36 eggs. Overwintered adult females and males lived 208 and 227 d, respectively. At 25 degrees C, the mean egg incubation period was 13 d. In the field, egg hatch occurred in 12-15 d with 83% survival. There were five to seven instars. At 25 degrees C, duration of the larval stage averaged 129 d. Pupation commenced in late August. At 25 degrees C, pupation averaged 20 d. In the field, pupation required 20-26 d. Transformation to adults occurred from late September to October. New adults remained in the pupal chambers until the next year. Infection by Beauveria bassiana Vuill. occurred in 0.8% of the pupae and 8.8% of the overwintered adults.  相似文献

As the habitats of the mayfly Bleptus fasciatus (Ephemeroptera, Heptageniidae) are unique and specialized, information on the distribution and biology of the mayfly is very poor. In this article, the biology of the mayfly is described, with special reference to the distribution and life cycle: the voltinism, emergence and reproductive season, nuptial behavior (i.e., swarming), egg period, and the early stage of postembryogenesis. The life cycle of the mayfly was judged as semivoltine, in contrast to the previous interpretation. Also, the unique nuptial behavior or the swarming of the mayfly is revealed.  相似文献

1. The chief objectives were: (i) to describe quantitatively the life cycles of four species of Elmidae, Elmis aenea, Esolus parallelepipedus, Oulimnius tuberculatus and Limnius volkmari; (ii) to use life tables to identify critical periods for survival in the life cycle of each species; (iii) to evaluate the immediate and longer‐term effects of a severe spate on densities of the four species. Monthly samples were taken over 63 months at two contrasting sites in a small stream: one in a deep section with macrophytes abundant, and the other in a shallow stony section. 2. There were five larval instars for O. tuberculatus, seven for L. volkmari and six for the other two species. The life cycle of each species took 1 year from egg hatching (chiefly in June for E. aenea and O. tuberculatus, and July for the other species) to pupation in the stream bank and a further year before the adults in the stream matured and laid their eggs. Mature adults were present in most months, but were rare or absent in January and February and attained maximum densities in April for O. tuberculatus and May for the other species. 3. Laboratory experiments provided data on egg hatching and pupation periods and the number of eggs laid per female. Life tables compared maximum numbers per square metre for key life‐stages. Within each species, mortality rates between adjacent life‐stages were fairly constant among six cohorts and between sites, in spite of large differences in numbers. The only exception for all species was the high adult, but not larval, mortality during a severe spate. 4. Standardised life tables, starting with 1000 eggs, identified key life‐stages with the highest mortality, namely the early life‐stages for E. aenea (36% mortality), start of the overwintering period to pupation for O. tuberculatus (41%) and L. volkmari (51%), start of pupation to the maximum number of immature adults for E. parallelepipedus (41%) and between the maximum numbers of immature and mature adults for O. tuberculatus (41%). Therefore, critical periods for survival in the life cycle differed between species, presumably because of their different ecological requirements. Similarly, the effects of the spate on adult mortality, and hence egg production, varied between species, being most severe and long‐term for E. aenea and O. tuberculatus, less severe for E. parallelepipedus and least severe with a rapid recovery for L. volkmari. Possible reasons for these discrepancies are discussed, but more data are required on the food and microhabitat requirements of the elmids before satisfactory explanations can be found.  相似文献

The early life history of the small yellow croaker Larimichthys polyactis was studied using the otolith microchemistry of juvenile fish and a recruitment survey in the sandy ridges of the South Yellow Sea. The otolith Sr/Ca ratio regime shifted markedly at the age of 5–7 days (early April) and 37–41 days (around early May). Subsequently, the Sr/Ca ratio was almost constant until late June, indicating an aggregation of L. polyactis juveniles in the relatively stable habitat of the sandy ridges, which was supported by a recruitment survey that showed a rapid increase in the number of juveniles in the same area between early May and the end of June. Variations in the Sr/Ca ratio between early April and early May might reflect a habitat adaptive strategy of L. polyactis in the pelagic stage to hydrodynamic processes of the sandy ridges. Based on the aforementioned habitat shifts and recruitment phenology, it was hypothesised that L. polyactis juveniles disperse between early April and early May, inhabit sandy ridges to feed, and migrate offshore in late June.  相似文献

The biology of Leydigia acanthocercoides has been studied under laboratory conditions with reference to longevity, instar duration, growth, fecundity and embryonic development at a temperature range of 28–30 °C. It has three preadult and thirteen adult instars. Under the given laboratory conditions this species produces 20 eggs during a life span of 23 days. The number of eggs produced is uniformly constant in all adult instars. The growth rate seems to be exponential in the early phase of the life cycle as in other Cladocera. The general pattern of embryonic development of L. acanthocercoides is similar to those of other tropical cladocerans though differences in the duration of total developmental period have been recorded.Part of Ph.D. thesis.  相似文献

Synopsis The white perch,Morone americana, is an east coast estuarine species that invaded Lake Erie in the 1950's, but did not increase in abundance until the mid 1970's. We studied its distribution and feeding during spawning in the Sandusky River, Ohio in 1981–1983. White perch were present in the area from early April through May, but abundance was highest on bedrock riffles about 45 km upstream from Lake Erie. Spawning activity peaked in the last week of April when temperatures approached 18°C. White perch collected in early April had eaten walleye,Stizostedion vitreum vitreum, eggs. As spawning activity of white perch increased, feeding activity declined, and most fish collected during late April contained no food. Egg predation increased again in May, but the eggs eaten then were those of white bass,Morone chrysops, white perch, and possibly other species. We have no evidence that egg predation by white perch has affected walleye or white bass recruitment, but it could become a problem if white perch continue to increase in abundance.  相似文献

During 1990, whole-year investigations on the cycle of maturity and early life history of Notothenia coriiceps were carried out. All collected material (ichthyoplankton samples and adult fish) originated from Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetlands. Development of the gonads of N. coriiceps starts in February. Spawning takes place in May and June, and the gonads rest about half a year. Using whole-year ichthyoplankton sampling eggs were observed from the stage of several blastomeres (May, June) to hatching (December). During the whole of embryogenesis the eggs remained pelagic. A preference for occurrence in the upper layers of investigated waters was noticed. Accepted: 22 March 1999  相似文献
