Aims

Over a 2?year period, we compared the soil biological functioning (SBF) of Cerrado physiognomies ranging from grassland-savannic to forest formations, sampling in the middle of the dry and rainy seasons.

Methods

Soil samples were collected at two depths (0 to 5?cm and 5 to 20?cm) under the following physiognomies: Campo Sujo, Cerrado Ralo, Cerrado sensu stricto, Cerrad?o and Mata de Galeria. The SBF was represented by the simultaneous analyses of microbial biomass carbon, soil basal respiration and the activity of enzymes linked to the C, P and S cycles (β-glucosidase, acid phosphatase and arylsulfatase, respectively).

Results

The results demonstrated that Cerrado physiognomies are a major determinant of SBF patterns. The forest-like physiognomies (Mata de Galeria and Cerrad?o) presented the highest biomass and activity compared to the grassland (Campo Sujo) and savanna physiognomies (Cerrado Ralo and Cerrado sensu stricto). These differences were more evident in the topsoil layer (0 to 5?cm), and the seasonal effect on the SBF of the Mata de Galeria and Cerrad?o was more pronounced than on the other physiognomies.

Conclusions

These results provide a benchmark for evaluating changes in SBF and related processes in Cerrado areas due to shifts toward agriculture and cattle production.  相似文献

The preserved Cerrado from Northeastern Brazil presents different physicochemical properties and plant diversity, which can influence the fungal communities. Therefore, we evaluated the fungal diversity in preserved sites, at Sete Cidades National Park, across a gradient of vegetation that included Campo graminoide, Cerrado stricto sensu, Cerradao, and Floresta decidual. Of all of the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) obtained, the Floresta decidual presented the highest richness. Ascomycota were the most abundant phylum (45%), followed by Basidiomycota (32%). Basal fungi and other phyla accounted for 23% of the total dataset. Agaricomycetes, Eurotiomycetes, Lecanoromycetes, Basidiobolus, Dothideomycetes, and Taphrinomycetes were the most abundant classes of fungi found across the gradient of Cerrado vegetation. In conclusion, our study suggests that the Brazilian Cerrado from Sete Cidades National Park presents a high fungal diversity and includes sources of new fungal species for biotechnological purposes.  相似文献

The Cerrado biome in the Sete Cidades National Park, an Ecological Reserve in Northeastern Brazil, has conserved its native biodiversity and presents a variety of plants found in other savannas in Brazil. Despite this finding the soil microbial diversity and community structure are poorly understood. Therefore, we described soil bacterial diversity and distribution along a savanna vegetation gradient taking into account the prevailing environmental factors. The bacterial composition was retrieved by sequencing a fragment of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene. The bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were assigned to 37 different phyla, 96 classes, and 83 genera. At the phylum level, a core comprised by Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Verrucomicrobia and Planctomycetes, was detected in all areas of Cerrado. ‘Cerrado stricto sensu’ and ‘Cerradao’ share more similarities between edaphic properties and vegetation and also present more similar bacterial communities, while ‘Floresta decidual’ and ‘Campo graminoide’ show the largest environmental differences and also more distinct bacterial communities. Proteobacteria (26%), Acidobacteria (21%) and Actinobacteria (21%) were the most abundant phyla within the four areas. All the samples present similar bacteria richness (alpha diversity) and the observed differences among them (beta diversity) were more related to the abundance of specific taxon OTUs compared to their presence or absence. Total organic C, N and P are the main abiotic factors structuring the bacterial communities. In summary, our findings show the bacterial community structure was clearly different across the Cerrado gradient, but that these environments share a bacterial phylum-core comprising Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Verrucomicrobia and Planctomycetes with other Brazilian savannas.  相似文献

Repression of nitrification in soils under a climax grassland vegetation   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Abstract Two hypotheses on repression of nitrification in climax vegetations (i.e. nitrogen immobilization and allelopathy) were investigated. In this study the potential nitrification activities and numbers of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria were established in a nature reserve with a series of natural grasslands with vegetational different stages of succession of plants species. The pastures had not been fertilized for 3, 7, 20 and 46 years, respectively, and the gradual decrease in availability of nutrients had led to pastures dominated by different grass species. In each field soil parameters, potential nitrification activities (PNA) and numbers of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria were determined in the root zone of Holcus lanatus as well as in that of a grass species characteristic of the stage of succession. In the rhizosphere of H. lanatus decreasing PNA and numbers of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria were observed as the period of non fertilization increased. Within each field no significant differences in PNA were observed between the root zones of H. lanatus and those of the dominant grass species. From these results it is concluded that, in these fields, decreasing nitrification was related only to decreasing ammonium availability and not to species composition. No indications were obtained that allelochemicals were involved in the flow nitrification potentials of late stages of succession. The optimum pH of the ammonium-oxidizing community, measured as PNA, decreased as the period of non fertilization increased. It is suggested that impoverishment of the grassland soil with respect to nitrogen availability selects against ammonium-oxidizing bacteria with a relatively high pH optimum.  相似文献

Photosynthetic capacity on area (P Nmaxa ) and mass bases (P Nmaxm ) and specific leaf mass (SLM) were determined in twenty adult woody species of Cerrado under field conditions. The mean values obtained for P Nmaxa [11.4 μmol(CO2) m-2 s-1], P Nmaxm [78 μmol(CO2) kg-1 s-1] and SLM (150 g m-2) were compared with mean values found for deciduous and evergreen sclerophyllous species growing also under field conditions. P Nmaxm and SLM were statistically different among deciduous, Cerrado and evergreen sclerophyllous species. There was a gradual decrease of P Nmaxm and an increase of SLM from deciduous to evergreen sclerophyllous species. Woody species of Cerrado showed mean values of P Nmaxm and SLM between deciduous and evergreen species indicating its brevideciduousness. The comparison using mean values of P Nmaxm and SLM belonging to deciduous, Cerrado and evergreen sclerophyllous species was suitable to confirm the interdependence among leaf life span, structure and physiological attributes of leaf. An area of New Zealand alpine herbfield, 22×22 m, was sampled on a 3×3 m grid.Two community types could be distinguished, dominated respectively by the cushion epacrid Dracophyllum muscoides and the subshrub asterad Celmisia viscosa. Each type was subdivided into three communities. The distribution of these communities was correlated with the environmental factors measured, with a predictability of up to 81%. Some of the factors, such as soil organic matter, could have been influenced by the vegetation, but others were microtopographic ones, unlikely to have been so influenced. There was no evidence of cyclic succession. Possibly the distribution of the two major types reflects previous patch burns, but distributions of individual communities are related to the current environment.Association between the more common species revealed two very clear groups, which characterise, but are not exclusive to, the two community types.  相似文献

Fungi play important roles in ecosystem processes, and the elevational pattern of fungal diversity is still unclear. Here, we examined the diversity of fungi along a 1,000 m elevation gradient on Mount Nadu, Southwestern China. We used MiSeq sequencing to obtain fungal sequences that were clustered into operational taxonomic units(OTUs) and to measure the fungal composition and diversity. Though the species richness and phylogenetic diversity of the fungal community did not exhibit significant trends with increasing altitude, they were significantly lower at mid-altitudinal sites than at the base. The Bray-Curtis distance clustering also showed that the fungal communities varied significantly with altitude. A distance-based linear model multivariate analysis(DistLM) identified that soil pH dominated the explanatory power of the species richness(23.72%),phylogenetic diversity(24.25%) and beta diversity(28.10%) of the fungal community. Moreover, the species richness and phylogenetic diversity of the fungal community increased linearly with increasing soil pH(P0.05). Our study provides evidence that pH is an important predictor of soil fungal diversity along elevation gradients in Southwestern China.  相似文献

In the present study the tick prevalence, mean intensity of infestation and species were recorded on birds captured between January 2009 and December 2010 in the Ecological Station Pirapitinga-ESEC from Minas Gerais State, Brazil. A total of 967 birds, from 15 families and 40 species were captured and 165 (17.1 %) individuals were parasitized by ticks. Of these 160 (97 %) belonged to the order Passeriformes. Five tick species were identified: Amblyomma longirostre (n = 274) was the most common species followed by Amblyomma parvum (n = 43), Amblyomma nodosum (n = 39), Amblyomma ovale (n = 24) and Riphicephalus sanguineus (n = 7). None of 61 unengorged larvae molted to nymph. The mean intensity of infestation was 2.7 ± 2.4 ticks per bird (448 ticks/165 birds) ranging from 1 to 10. Only 19 (11.4 %) birds were infested with one species of tick. The remaining birds were infested by two, three or four species of ticks. Also new hosts for all five ticks were recorded. Only nymphs were recorded throughout the year with two similar peaks during autumn and winter 2009 and 2010.  相似文献

The success of fig trees in tropical ecosystems is evidenced by the great diversity (+750 species) and wide geographic distribution of the genus. We assessed the contribution of environmental variables on the species richness and density of fig trees in fragments of seasonal semideciduous forest (SSF) in Brazil. We assessed 20 forest fragments in three regions in Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Fig tree richness and density was estimated in rectangular plots, comprising 31.4 ha sampled. Both richness and fig tree density were linearly modeled as function of variables representing (1) fragment metrics, (2) forest structure, and (3) landscape metrics expressing water drainage in the fragments. Model selection was performed by comparing the AIC values (Akaike Information Criterion) and the relative weight of each model (wAIC). Both species richness and fig tree density were better explained by the water availability in the fragment (meter of streams/ha): wAICrichness = 0.45, wAICdensity = 0.96. The remaining variables related to anthropic perturbation and forest structure were of little weight in the models. The rainfall seasonality in SSF seems to select for both establishment strategies and morphological adaptations in the hemiepiphytic fig tree species. In the studied SSF, hemiepiphytes established at lower heights in their host trees than reported for fig trees in evergreen rainforests. Some hemiepiphytic fig species evolved superficial roots extending up to 100 m from their trunks, resulting in hectare-scale root zones that allow them to efficiently forage water and soil nutrients. The community of fig trees was robust to variation in forest structure and conservation level of SSF fragments, making this group of plants an important element for the functioning of seasonal tropical forests.  相似文献

Water regime of metal-contaminated soil under juvenile forest vegetation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In a three-year factorial lysimeter study in Open Top Chambers (OTCs), we investigated the effect of topsoil pollution by the heavy metals Zn, Cu, and Cd on the water regime of newly established forest ecosystems. Furthermore, we studied the influence of two types of uncontaminated subsoils (acidic vs. calcareous) and two types of irrigation water acidity (ambient rainfall chemistry vs. acidified chemistry) on the response of the vegetation. Each of the eight treatment combinations was replicated four times. The contamination (2700 mg kg–1 Zn, 385 mg kg–1 Cu and 10 mg kg–1 Cd) was applied by mixing filter dust from a non-ferrous metal smelter into the upper 15 cm of the soil profile, consisting of silty loam (pH 6.5). The same vegetation was established in all 32 lysimeters. The model forest ecosystem consisted of seedlings of Norway spruce (Picea abies), willow (Salix viminalis), poplar (Populus tremula) and birch (Betula pendula) trees and a variety of herbaceous understorey plants. Systematic and significant effects showed up in the second and third growing season after canopies had closed. Evapotranspiration was reduced in metal contaminated treatments, independent of the subsoil type and acidity of the irrigation water. This effect corresponded to an even stronger reduction in root growth in the metal treatments. In the first two growing seasons, evapotranspiration was higher on the calcareous than on the acidic subsoil. In the third year the difference disappeared. Acidification of the irrigation water had no significant effect on water consumption, although a tendency to enhance evapotranspiration became increasingly manifest in the second and third year. Soil water potentials indicated that the increasing water consumption over the years was fed primarily by intensified extraction of water from the topsoil in the lysimeters with acidic subsoil, whereas also lower depths became strongly exploited in the lysimeters with calcareous subsoil. These patterns agreed well with the vertical profiles of fine root density related with the two types of subsoil. Leaf transpiration measurements and biomass samples showed that different plant species in part responded quite differently and occasionally even in opposite ways to the metal treatments and subsoil conditions. They suggest that the year-to-year changes in treatment effects on water consumption and extraction patterns were related to differences in growth dynamics, as well as to shifts in competitiveness of the various species. Results showed that the uncontaminated subsoil offered a possibility to compensate the reduction in root water extraction in the topsoil under drought, as well as metal stress.  相似文献

Vegetation and environment have been analyzed along an altitudinal gradient in Harena Forest, Bale Mountains National Park, southeastern Ethiopia. Vegetation data include numbers of each tree and shrub species and cover-abundance values of each herbaceous species. Environmental data comprise edaphic factors, altitude and topography. The two vegetation layers data were analysed separately.Probabilistic similarity coefficients were computed between the relevés, and these values were used in subsequent computations for classification and ordination. Two sets of stratocoena, comprising 6 types each, derived on the basis of separate analyses of tree-shrub and herb layers of the forest were recognised. A combination of the two sets of stratocoena produced a total of 11 vegetation types. Environmental fuzzy set analysis was applied to determine the strength of the relationship of the relevés to the environmental factors. Autocorrelation analysis was applied to the eigenvectors of probabilistic similarity matrices and environmental data. Altitude appears to be more important thant the other environmental factors in controlling the zonation of the forest. Other important environmental influences on the vegetation include pH, organic matter content and texture of the soil. We measured nitrogen (N) transformation rates for six years to examine temporal variation across the vegetation and elevation gradient that exists within the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory. Net N mineralization and nitrification rates were measured using 28-day in situ closed core incubations. Incubations were conducted at various intervals, ranging from monthly during the growing season, to seasonally based on vegetation phenology. Vegetation types included oak-pine, cove hardwoods, low elevation mixed oak, high elevation mixed oak, and northern hardwoods. Elevations ranged from 782 to 1347 m. Nitrogen transformation rates varied with vegetation type. Mineralization rates were lowest in the oak-pine and mixed oak sites averaging <1.2 mg N kg soil-1 28 day-1. Rates in the cove hardwood site were greater than all other low elevation sites with an annual average of 3.8 mg N kg soil-1 28 day-1. Nitrogen mineralization was greatest in the northern hardwood site averaging 13 mg N kg soil-1 28 day-1. Nitrification rates were typically low on four sites with rates <0.5 mg N kg soil-1 28 day-1. However, the annual average nitrification rate of the northern hardwood site was 6 mg N kg soil-1 28 days-1. Strong seasonal trends in N mineralization were observed. Highest rates occurred in spring and summer with negligible activity in winter. Seasonal trends in nitrification were statistically significant only in the northern hardwood site. Nitrogen mineralization was significantly different among sites on the vegetation and elevation gradient. While N mineralization rates were greatest at the high elevation site, vegetation type appears to be the controlling factor.  相似文献

Summary Phosphorus supply factors (capacity, kinetic, intensity, and diffusivity) and plant growth were the approaches used to assess P supply of flooded rice soils. Increases in the capacity, intensity, and kinetic factors, as measured by E-value, solution P concentration, and soil P release rate to a distilled water sink respectively, were unpronouced and infrequent upon water-saturation of ten soils. However, increases in the diffusitivity factor, as measured by 32P diffusion coefficients, were at least ten-fold as soil moisture increased. The greatest increases in P diffusion occurred as soil moisture increased beyond one-third bar.Using a P fertilized soil or P treated powdered cellulose as the P source and a minus P nutrient solution to nourish a split root system with water and nutrients, data were obtained which suggested that P uptake and rice-shoot growth (indicators of P availability) increased with increasing moisture level. Phosphorus uptake and rice-shoot growth were greatst when the soil or P treated cellulose were water-saturated. The drainage from acid sulphate soils severely affects water quality, with pH values commonly around 3, and toxic concentrations of ferrous iron and aluminium. The water quality in an area of acid sulphate soils on the southern coastal plain of Kalimantan, Indonesia, was examined and an inventory of fish species was made. The ionic composition of the water can be described as a simple dilution series of the hypothetical mineral Fe(II)4Na8Ca2Mg6Al4H10(SO4)27, originating from the oxidation of pyrite and weathering products of clay minerals. The oxygen concentrations were variable, ranging from <10% to >100% saturation, without a clear relation to ionic concentrations. Fish were encountered over the entire pH range of 2.8–5.2. Although species distribution showed some correlation with water quality, the species showed widely overlapping ranges, and they are not suitable for use as indicator organisms on the present detailed scale. The most likely explanation for the poor correlation between fish distribution and water quality are seasonal and local fluctuations in quality. These presumably eliminated the more sensitive species, and only those with a high acidity tolerance were found in the area.  相似文献

In vitro studies have shown that acetylcholine-induced vasorelaxation is mediated by endothelium-derived relaxing factor/nitric oxide (EDRF/NO). EDRF/NO is synthesized from L-arginine by an enzymatic pathway that is inhibited by L-NG-methylarginine. To assess whether EDRF/NO also mediates the vasodilating action of acetylcholine in vivo, we have investigated the effect of L-arginine and L-NG-methylarginine on the hypotensive response to acetylcholine in the anesthetized guinea pig. L-arginine prolonged the duration of the depressor response to acetylcholine and L-NG-methylarginine decreased it. However, neither L-arginine nor L-NG-methylarginine modified the magnitude of acetylcholine's hypotensive effect unless the blood pressure was previously elevated by infusion with norepinephrine. Thus, de novo synthesis of nitric oxide from L-arginine contributes importantly, but not exclusively, to acetylcholine's hypotensive effect in the guinea pig. Furthermore, the concentration of circulating L-arginine may influence the duration and magnitude of acetylcholine-induced depressor responses under normotensive and hypertensive conditions.  相似文献

Environmental variation connected with seasonality is likely to affect the evolution of life-history strategies in ectotherms, but there is no consensus as to how important life-history traits like body size are influenced by environmental variation along seasonal gradients. We compared adult body size, skeletal growth, mean age, age at first reproduction and longevity among 11 common frog (Rana temporaria) populations sampled along a 1,600-km-long latitudinal gradient across Scandinavia. Mean age, age at first reproduction and longevity increased linearly with decreasing growth season length. Lifetime activity (i.e. the estimated number of active days during life-time) was highest at mid-latitudes and females had on average more active days throughout their lives than males. Variation in body size was due to differences in lifetime activity among populations??individuals (especially females) were largest where they had the longest cumulative activity period??as well as to differences between populations in skeletal growth rate as determined by skeletochronological analyses. Especially, males grew faster at intermediate latitudes. While life-history trait variation was strongly associated with latitude, the direction and shape of these relationships were sex- and trait-specific. These context-dependent relationships may be the result of life-history trade-offs enforced by differences in future reproductive opportunities and time constraints among the populations. Thus, seasonality appears to be an important environmental factor shaping life-history trait variation in common frogs.  相似文献

In the undisturbed floodplain of the Biebrza river (N.E. Poland) wecompared vegetation composition, standing crop and the nutrients in standingcrop to site factors such as flood duration and inundation depth during springfloods, summer water levels and concentrations of chemical constituents inwaterand nutrient release rates from peat. Our analysis shows a number of clearspatial patterns of biotic and abiotic variables in the ca. 1 kmwide river marginal wetland. The distribution of vegetation types follows acertain pattern: Glycerietum maximae close to the river,followed by respectively Caricetum gracilis andCaricetum elatae and finally Calamagrostietumstrictae at the margin of the river plain. Species richnessincreasesand standing crop decreases from the river towards the margin. The elevation ofthe ground surface gently rises with increasing distance from the river; floodduration and flooding depths in spring decrease in the same direction.Groundwater tables in summer are less correlated to the elevation gradient buttend to be closer to the ground surface at the valley margin. These differencesalso lead to a higher amplitude close to the river and a fairly stable watertable far away from the river. Concentrations of major ions and ammoniumincrease towards the river. Nutrient release rates are also higher closer totheriver. Absence and presence of species and the variation in species compositionof the vegetation was explained best by flood variables; variables fromgroundwater explained much less of the variance. Variations in standing cropandnutrients in standing crop corresponded better to the rates of nutrient releasefrom the organic soil than to nutrient concentrations in the soil water. Weconcluded that river hydrology and nutrient release from the soil are clearlyrelated to vegetation composition, species richness and productivity of thevegetation.  相似文献

Abstract

The woodland vegetation of Central Albania is studied and discussed along an altitudinal gradient in the Dajti National Park (DNP). The plant species combinations recorded in 168 plots were classified and subjected to indirect gradient analysis using environmental variables of geology, soil, topography, disturbance and grazing impact. The transect over more than 1300 m reflects the biogeographically intermediate paramediterranean vegetation zonation and the relatively humid Mediterranean “hygric series” at its eastern margins. It reveals the total range of woodland types known to occur in Central Albania, thus stressing the representativity of the area regarding biodiversity and biogeography, and its importance for nature conservation. Along the elevation gradient, we found three plant communities of the mesomediterranean Quercetalia ilicis, five of the supramediterranean Quercetalia pubescentis and five of the montane or oromediterranean Fagetalia sylvaticae.  相似文献
