Two young women vacationing in Kiev just after the Chernobyl accident received light radioactive contamination in and on their bodies, and on their clothing. The internal and external body contaminations were determined using a whole body counter and a pure germanium detector on two dates, 80 days apart. The total body activity that could not be diminished by washing corresponded to 50 kBq at the time of contamination. Important internal radionuclides were 131I, 137Cs and 134Cs causing a committed effective dose equivalent of 0.4 mSv. The biological half-life of Cs was 60 days. In the clothing 16 different radionuclides, including 239Np, were found at various levels of activity.  相似文献

Simulations of planar whole body acquisitions in therapeutic procedures are often extensively time-consuming and therefore rarely used. However, optimising tools and variance reduction techniques can be employed to overcome this problem. In this paper, a variety of features available in GATE are explored and their capabilities to reduce simulation time are evaluated. For this purpose, the male XCAT phantom was used as a virtual patient with 177Lu-DOTATATE pharmacokinetic for whole body planar acquisition simulations in a Siemens Symbia T2 model. Activity distribution was divided into 8 compartments that were simulated separately. GATE optimization techniques included reducing the amount of time spent in both voxel and detector tracking. Some acceleration techniques led to a decrease of CPU-time by a factor of 167, while image statistics were kept constant. In that context, the simulation of therapeutic procedure imaging would still require 46 days on a single CPU, but this could be reduced to hours on a dedicated cluster.  相似文献

Age and sex features of strontium metabolism have been analyzed based on studies of the population residing on the banks of the Techa river which was contaminated by fission products during the years 1949–1956. Measurements of 90Sr body burden have been performed since 1974 using a whole-body counter, and these have made it possible to estimate age-specific long-term retention and elimination rates for men and women. Regarding the retention that correlated with the respective maturation ages, distinct sex differences have been observed for adolescents, whereas only postmenopausal women showed a sharp increase of their elimination rates. There were no differences concerning the reproductive ages. Our experimental findings have a clear physiological interpretation and can be used to develop metabolic models for bone-seeking radionuclides. The ambient dose equivalent from the secondary radiation produced during irradiation of a cylindrical water phantom with 200 MeV/u 12C-ions was investigated at the biophysics cave at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt, Germany. Pencil-like ion beams were delivered by the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS18 using the slow extraction mode. Since the secondary radiation field outside the phantom is complex in its particle composition and particle energy distribution, microdosimetric methods developed for the dosimetry of the cosmic radiation field at flight altitudes, which is similar in terms of complexity, were applied. Lineal energy distributions and the ambient dose equivalent were measured with a tissue-equivalent proportional counter at different particle emission angles. An additional veto counter allowed the identification of the different contributions of charged and neutral particles. A significant increase in the mean quality factor was observed at large emission angles which could be attributed to the decreasing contributions of charged particles compared to the (relative) contributions from neutrons.  相似文献

Diabetes is a life threatening disease and its onset is linked with both environmental and genetic factors. Zinc metabolism gets altered during diabetes and results in many complications. The present study was designed to elucidate the effects of zinc supplementation on the biokinetics of 65Zn in whole body, liver and its biodistribution in diabetic rats. The animals were divided into four groups viz; normal control; diabetic (single intraperitoneal injection of alloxan 150 mg/kg body weight); zinc treated (227 mg/l in drinking water); and diabetic + zinc treated. To carry out biokinetics study, each rat was injected intraperitoneally with 0.74 MBq radioactivity of 65Zn following 4 weeks of different treatments and the radioactivity was determined by using a suitably shielded scintillation counter. Alloxan induced diabetic rats showed a significant decrease in both the fast (Tb1) and slow (Tb2) components of biological half-life of 65Zn which, however, were normalized in whole body (P > 0.05) following zinc supplementation. In case of liver, Tb2 component was brought back to the normal but Tb1 component was not increased significantly. The present study indicates that the paucity of zinc in the tissues of the diabetic animals was due to decreased retention of tissue zinc as evidenced by increased serum Zn, hyperzincuria and increased rate of uptake of 65Zn by the liver. Zinc supplementation caused a significant improvement in the retention of zinc in the tissues and is therefore likely to be of benefit in the treatment of diabetes.  相似文献

Results of aboratory evaluations are presented of the dual-head scintimammography system using two opposed and co-registered compact gamma heads. The system is intended for clinical studies imaging suspicious lesions in a compressed breast. The studies were performed using 5 cm and 6 cm compressed breast phantoms with lesion sizes from 6 to 10 mm and lesion to breast tissue activity ratios from 6 to 10. Two imagers with a field-of-view (FOV) of 15 cm×20 cm were placed on the opposite sides of the breast phartoms. In some studies anthropomorphic torso phantom was used to simulate realistic scatter gamma radiation field. Two types of parallel-hole lead collimators were employed. Combining the co-registered images from both detector heads resulted in an over two-fold increase in lesioin contrast in the central plane of the phantom and substantially increased detection sensitivity over the whole breast volume, especially of asymmetrically placed small lesions. The results confirm the important advantage of a co-registoed two-head scintimammography system over a single head system in lesion detection and localization.  相似文献

PurposeTo determine the surface dose of a water phantom using a semiconductor detector for diagnostic kilovoltage x-ray beams.MethodsAn AGMS-DM+ semiconductor detector was calibrated in terms of air kerma measured with an ionization chamber. Air kerma was measured for 20 x-ray beams with tube voltages of 50–140 kVp and a half-value layer (HVL) of 2.2–9.7 mm Al for given quality index (QI) values of 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6, and converted to the surface dose. Finally, the air kerma and HVL measured by the AGMS-DM+ detector were expressed as a ratio of the surface dose for 10 × 10 and 20 × 20 cm2 fields. The ratio of both was represented as a function of HVL for the given QI values and verified by comparing it with that calculated using the Monte Carlo method.ResultsThe air kerma calibration factor, CF, for the AGMS-DM+ detector ranged from 0.986 to 1.016 (0.9% in k = 1). The CF values were almost independent of the x-ray fluence spectra for the given QI values. The ratio of the surface dose to the air kerma determined by the PTW 30,013 chamber and the AGMS-DM+ detector was less than 1.8% for the values calculated using the Monte Carlo method, and showed a good correlation with the HVL for the given QI values.ConclusionIt is possible to determine the surface dose of a water phantom from the air kerma and HVL measured by a semiconductor detector for given QI values.  相似文献

Kinetic modeling of positron emission tomography (PET) data can assess index rate of uptake, metabolism and predict disease progression more accurately than conventional static PET. However, it requires knowledge of the time-course of the arterial blood radioactivity concentration, called the arterial input function (AIF). The gold standard to acquire the AIF is by invasive means. The purpose of this study was to validate a previously developed dual readout scintillating fiber-based non-invasive positron detector, hereinafter called non-invasive detector (NID), developed to determine the AIF for dynamic PET measured from the human radial artery. The NID consisted of a 3 m long plastic scintillating fiber with each end coupled to a 5 m long transmission fiber followed by a silicon photomultiplier. The scintillating fiber was enclosed inside the grooves of a plastic cylindrical shell. Two sets of experiments were performed to test the NID against a previously validated microfluidic positron detector. A closed-loop microfluidic system combined with a wrist phantom was used. During the first experiment, the three PET radioisotopes 18F, 11C and 68Ga were tested. After optimizing the detector, a second series of tests were performed using only 18F and 11C. The maximum pulse amplitude to electronic noise ratio was 52 obtained with 11C. Linear regressions showed a linear relation between the two detectors. These preliminary results show that the NID can accurately detect positrons from a patient’s wrist and has the potential to non-invasively measure the AIF during a dynamic PET scan. The accuracy of these measurements needs to be determined.  相似文献

The Hybrid Compact Gamma Camera (HCGC) is a small field of view (SFOV) portable hybrid gamma-optical camera intended for small organ imaging at the patient bedside. In this study, a thyroid phantom was used to determine the suitability of the HCGC for clinical thyroid imaging through comparison with large field of view (LFOV) system performance.A direct comparison with LFOV contrast performance showed that the lower sensitivity of the HCGC had a detrimental effect on image quality. Despite this, the contrast of HCGC images exceeded those of the LFOV cameras for some image features particularly when a high-resolution pinhole collimator was used.A clinical simulation showed that thyroid morphology was visible in a 5 min integrated image acquisition with an expected dependency on the activity within the thyroid. The first clinical use of the HCGC for imaging thyroid uptake of 123I is also presented.Measurements indicate that the HCGC has promising utility in thyroid imaging, particularly as its small size allows it to be brought into closer proximity with a patient. Future development of the energy response of the HCGC is expected to further improve image detectability.  相似文献

Fundamental physical aspects of scanning the human body to determine in vivo radioisotope distribution are discussed, with special reference to the importance of collimator design and data display system. The pertinent details of a sensitive whole body scanner which has proved useful in clinical practice are described. The main features contributing to its versatility are: (1) fully automatic operation, (2) use of a 5″ diameter detector crystal with a focusing collimator, (3) provision to scale the scintiscan presentation to a convenient size, and (4) photographic recording of the scan.  相似文献

Computational anthropomorphic phantoms have become an important investigation tool for medical imaging and dosimetry for radiotherapy and radiation protection. The development of computational phantoms with realistic anatomical features contribute significantly to the development of novel methods in medical physics. For many applications, it is desirable that such computational phantoms have a real-world physical counterpart in order to verify the obtained results. In this work, we report the development of a voxelised phantom, the HIGH_RES_HEAD, modelling a paediatric head based on the commercial phantom 715-HN (CIRS). HIGH_RES_HEAD is unique for its anatomical details and high spatial resolution (0.18 × 0.18 mm2 pixel size). The development of such a phantom was required to investigate the performance of a new proton computed tomography (pCT) system, in terms of detector technology and image reconstruction algorithms. The HIGH_RES_HEAD was used in an ad-hoc Geant4 simulation modelling the pCT system. The simulation application was previously validated with respect to experimental results. When compared to a standard spatial resolution voxelised phantom of the same paediatric head, it was shown that in pCT reconstruction studies, the use of the HIGH_RES_HEAD translates into a reduction from 2% to 0.7% of the average relative stopping power difference between experimental and simulated results thus improving the overall quality of the head phantom simulation. The HIGH_RES_HEAD can also be used for other medical physics applications such as treatment planning studies.A second version of the voxelised phantom was created that contains a prototypic base of skull tumour and surrounding organs at risk.  相似文献

The productivity of a fermentation is proportional to the biomass concentration. The productivity can therefore be increased by retention of the cells in the fermentor. In this study microfiltration was used for cell retention in a fermentation of glucose to ethanol by baker's yeast. Compared to a system without cell retention the productivity could be increased 12-fold to 55 kg/m3 h at a biomass concentration of 135 kg/m3. Maximal ethanol concentrations of 76 kg/m3 were obtained at conditions of growth. At zero growth conditions in the integrated system the ethanol concentration could be increased to about 115 kg/m3, and could be produced for at least 10 hours. The fermentation results in the integrated system could be described reasonably well with a mathematical model based on a different linear inhibition kinetics for growth and substrate consumption.  相似文献

Aim

To employ the thermal neutron background that affects the patient during a traditional high-energy radiotherapy treatment for BNCT (Boron Neutron Capture Therapy) in order to enhance radiotherapy effectiveness.

Background

Conventional high-energy (15–25 MV) linear accelerators (LINACs) for radiotherapy produce fast secondary neutrons in the gantry with a mean energy of about 1 MeV due to (γ, n) reaction. This neutron flux, isotropically distributed, is considered as an unavoidable undesired dose during the treatment. Considering the moderating effect of human body, a thermal neutron fluence is localized in the tumour area: this neutron background could be employed for BNCT by previously administering 10B-Phenyl-Alanine (10BPA) to the patient.

Materials and methods

Monte Carlo simulations (MCNP4B-GN code) were performed to estimate the total amount of neutrons outside and inside human body during a traditional X-ray radiotherapy treatment. Moreover, a simplified tissue equivalent anthropomorphic phantom was used together with bubble detectors for thermal and fast neutron to evaluate the moderation effect of human body.

Results

Simulation and experimental results confirm the thermal neutron background during radiotherapy of 1.55E07 cm−2 Gy−1.The BNCT equivalent dose delivered at 4 cm depth in phantom is 1.5 mGy-eq/Gy, that is about 3 Gy-eq (4% of X-rays dose) for a 70 Gy IMRT treatment.

Conclusions

The thermal neutron component during a traditional high-energy radiotherapy treatment could produce a localized BNCT effect, with a localized therapeutic dose enhancement, corresponding to 4% or more of photon dose, following tumour characteristics. This BNCT additional dose could thus improve radiotherapy, acting as a localized radio-sensitizer.  相似文献

The influence of diet or its ingredients on 141Ce absorption and retention was investigated in six-day-old rats. Animals were fed over 8h with cow's milk, rat diet or a mixture of rat diet ingredients (fish meal, sunflower meal, alfalfa, cane molasses and premix) labelled with 141Ce. Whole-body radioactivity was determined in a double crystal scintillation counter every 24 h over a six-day period. Gut, liver, kidney and femur retention and cerium distribution in the gut was determined at the end of the experiment. Compared to milk diet, administration of rat diet or ingredients caused respectively 3 and 7.5 times lower whole body retention. Carcass retention was reduced by rat diet or ingredients 2-3 times and intestinal retention 3 and 8 times respectively. Irrespective of the dietary treatment the main site of cerium intestinal retention was the ileum. Our present results indicate that some compounds of rat diet might be considered as a means of reducing cerium absorption and intestinal retention in the very young.  相似文献

A pre-patient attenuator (“bowtie filter” or “bowtie”) is used to modulate an incoming x-ray beam as a function of the angle of the x-ray with respect to a patient to balance the photon flux on a detector array. While the current dynamic bowtie design is focused on fan-beam geometry, in this study we propose a methodology for dynamic bowtie design in multi-slice/cone-beam geometry. The proposed 3D dynamic bowtie is an extension of the 2D prior art. The 3D bowtie consists of a highly attenuating bowtie (HB) filled in with heavy liquid and a weakly attenuating bowtie (WB) immersed in the liquid of the HB. The HB targets a balanced flux distribution on a detector array when no object is in the field of view (FOV). The WB compensates for an object in the FOV, and hence is a scaled-down version of the object. The WB is rotated and translated in synchrony with the source rotation and patient translation so that the overall flux balance is maintained on the detector array. First, the mathematical models of different scanning modes are established for an elliptical water phantom. Then, a numerical simulation study is performed to compare the performance of the scanning modes in the cases of the water phantom and a patient cross-section without any bowtie and with a dynamic bowtie. The dynamic bowtie can equalize the numbers of detected photons in the case of the water phantom. In practical cases, the dynamic bowtie can effectively reduce the dynamic range of detected signals inside the FOV. Furthermore, the WB can be individualized using a 3D printing technique as the gold standard. We have extended the dynamic bowtie concept from 2D to 3D by using highly attenuating liquid and moving a scale-reduced negative copy of an object being scanned. Our methodology can be applied to reduce radiation dose and facilitate photon-counting detection.  相似文献

X-ray fluoroscopy is widely used for image guidance during cardiac intervention. However, radiation dose in these procedures can be high, and this is a significant concern, particularly in pediatric applications. Pediatrics procedures are in general much more complex than those performed on adults and thus are on average four to eight times longer1. Furthermore, children can undergo up to 10 fluoroscopic procedures by the age of 10, and have been shown to have a three-fold higher risk of developing fatal cancer throughout their life than the general population2,3.We have shown that radiation dose can be significantly reduced in adult cardiac procedures by using our scanning beam digital x-ray (SBDX) system4-- a fluoroscopic imaging system that employs an inverse imaging geometry5,6 (Figure 1, Movie 1 and Figure 2). Instead of a single focal spot and an extended detector as used in conventional systems, our approach utilizes an extended X-ray source with multiple focal spots focused on a small detector. Our X-ray source consists of a scanning electron beam sequentially illuminating up to 9,000 focal spot positions. Each focal spot projects a small portion of the imaging volume onto the detector. In contrast to a conventional system where the final image is directly projected onto the detector, the SBDX uses a dedicated algorithm to reconstruct the final image from the 9,000 detector images. For pediatric applications, dose savings with the SBDX system are expected to be smaller than in adult procedures. However, the SBDX system allows for additional dose savings by implementing an electronic adaptive exposure technique. Key to this method is the multi-beam scanning technique of the SBDX system: rather than exposing every part of the image with the same radiation dose, we can dynamically vary the exposure depending on the opacity of the region exposed. Therefore, we can significantly reduce exposure in radiolucent areas and maintain exposure in more opaque regions. In our current implementation, the adaptive exposure requires user interaction (Figure 3). However, in the future, the adaptive exposure will be real time and fully automatic. We have performed experiments with an anthropomorphic phantom and compared measured radiation dose with and without adaptive exposure using a dose area product (DAP) meter. In the experiment presented here, we find a dose reduction of 30%.  相似文献

PurposeIn radiotherapy, accurate calculation of patient radiation dose is very important for good clinical outcome. In the presence of metallic implants, the dose calculation accuracy could be compromised by metal artefacts generated in computed tomography (CT) images of patients. This study investigates the influence of metal-induced CT artefacts on MC dose calculations in a pelvic prosthesis phantom.MethodsA pelvic phantom containing unilateral Ti prosthesis was CT-scanned and accurate Hounsfield unit (HU) values were assigned to known materials of the phantom as opposed to HU values produced through the artefact CT images of the phantom. Using the DOSXYZnrc MC code, dose calculations were computed in the phantom model constructed from the original CT images containing the artefacts and artefact-free images made from the exact geometry of the phantom with known materials. The dose calculations were benchmarked against Gafchromic EBT3 film measurements using 15 MeV electron and 10 MV photon beams.ResultsThe average deviations between film and MC dose data decreased from 3 ± 2% to 1 ± 1% and from about 6 ± 2% to 3 ± 1% for the artefact and artefact-free phantom models against film data for the electron and photon fields, respectively.ConclusionsFor the Ti prosthesis phantom, the presence of metal-induced CT artefacts could cause dose inaccuracies of about 3%. Construction of an artefact-free phantom model made from the exact geometry of the phantom with known materials to overcome the effect of artefacts is advantageous compared to using CT data directly of which the exact tissue composition is not well-known.  相似文献

In sucklings, a high fraction of orally administered metals and radionuclides is retained in the gut. The location of elements in the gut is of interest because of their potential local health effect. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the influence of chelation therapy on gut retention and location of cadmium, mercury, and cerium in-suckling rats. Radionuclides115mCd,203Hg, and141Ce were administered orally to 6-d-old rats. Chelating agent Zn-DTPA (3.64 mmol/kg) was administered to animals that received115m Cd or141Ce and Na-DMPS (375 μmol/kg) to those that received203Hg, immediately and 24 h or 24 and 48 h after radionuclide administration. Radio-activity was determined in the whole body and gastrointestinal tract 6 d later. Both early and delayed chelation treatment very effectively reduced whole body retention, and this was mainly owing to reduced gut retention. Although chelation therapy reduced gut retention of administered radionuclides 3–30 times, the site of metal accumulation and retention in the intestine remained unchanged. For all 3 radionuclides, both after early and delayed therapy, the site of metal accumulation was always the lower part of small intestine—ileum.  相似文献

Irradiation of whole blood and blood components before transfusion is currently the only accepted method to prevent Transfusion-Associated Graft-Versus-Host-Disease (TA-GVHD). However, choosing the appropriate technique to determine the dosimetric parameters associated with blood irradiation remains an issue. We propose a dosimetric system based on the standard Fricke Xylenol Gel (FXG) dosimeter and an appropriate phantom. The modified dosimeter was previously calibrated using a 60Co teletherapy unit and its validation was accomplished with a 137Cs blood irradiator. An ionization chamber, standard FXG, radiochromic film and thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) were used as reference dosimeters to determine the dose response and dose rate of the 60Co unit. The dose distributions in a blood irradiator were determined with the modified FXG, the radiochromic film, and measurements by TLD dosimeters. A linear response for absorbed doses up to 54 Gy was obtained with our system. Additionally, the dose rate uncertainties carried out with gel dosimetry were lower than 5% and differences lower than 4% were noted when the absorbed dose responses were compared with ionization chamber, film and TLDs.  相似文献

The cause of intractable chronic diarrhoea was found to be malabsorption of bile acid in five out of 42 patients thought to have the irritable bowel syndrome, six out of 29 patients with persistent diarrhoea after surgery for peptic ulcer, 23 who had undergone small bowel resection, and two others. Specific treatment brought symptomatic relief. The diagnosis was established by measuring the proportion of SeHCAT, a synthetic bile salt, retained one week after oral administration of a tracer dose of less than 100 micrograms of the compound labelled with 40 kBq (1 microCi) of selenium-75. These results indicate that malabsorption of bile acid is a more common cause of chronic diarrhoea than is generally appreciated. Measurement of retention of SeHCAT is a simple, accurate, and acceptable means of establishing the diagnosis of this debilitating but treatable condition.  相似文献
