Given the economic importance of insects and arachnids as pests of agricultural crops, urban environments or as vectors of plant and human diseases, various technologies are being developed as control tools. A subset of these tools focuses on modifying the behavior of arthropods by attraction or repulsion. Therefore, arthropods are often the focus of behavioral investigations. Various tools have been developed to measure arthropod behavior, including wind tunnels, flight mills, servospheres, and various types of olfactometers. The purpose of these tools is to measure insect or arachnid response to visual or more often olfactory cues. The vertical T-maze oflactometer described here measures choices performed by insects in response to attractants or repellents. It is a high throughput assay device that takes advantage of the positive phototaxis (attraction to light) and negative geotaxis (tendency to walk or fly upward) exhibited by many arthropods. The olfactometer consists of a 30 cm glass tube that is divided in half with a Teflon strip forming a T-maze. Each half serves as an arm of the olfactometer enabling the test subjects to make a choice between two potential odor fields in assays involving attractants. In assays involving repellents, lack of normal response to known attractants can also be measured as a third variable.  相似文献

Sequential series multijunction dye‐sensitized solar cells (SSM‐DSCs) can power solar‐to‐fuel processes with a single illuminated area device. Dye selection and strategies limiting photon losses are critical in SSM‐DSC devices for higher performance systems. Herein, an efficient and readily applicable spin coating protocol on glass surfaces with an antireflective fluoropolymer (CYTOP) is applied to an SSM‐DSC architecture. Combining CYTOP with the use of an immersion oil between glass spacers in a three subcell SSM‐DSC with judiciously selected TiO2 photoanode sensitizers and thicknesses, an overall power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.1% is obtained with an output of 2.3 V. Without external bias, this SSM‐DSC configuration shows an impressive overall solar‐to‐fuel conversion efficiency of 6% when powering IrO2 and Au2O3 electrocatalysts for CO2 and H2O to CO and H2 conversion in aqueous solution. The role of CYTOP, immersion oil, sensitizer selection, and film thickness on SSM‐DSC devices is discussed along with the stability of this system.  相似文献

Up-converting phosphor reporters for nucleic acid microarrays   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
An important application of robotically spotted DNA microarrays is the monitoring of RNA expression levels. A clear limitation of this technology is the relatively large amount of RNA that is required per hybridization as a result of low hybridization efficiency and limiting detection sensitivity provided by conventional fluorescent reporters. We have used a recently introduced luminescent reporter technology, called UPT (up-converting phosphor technology). Down-converting phosphors have been applied before to detect nucleic acids on filters using time-resolved fluorometry. The unique feature of the phosphor particles (size 0.4 microm) used here is that they emit visible light when illuminated with infrared (IR) light (980 nm) as a result of a phenomenon called up-conversion. Because neither support material of microarrays nor biomolecules possess up-conversion properties, an enhanced image contrast is expected when these nonfading phosphor particles are applied to detect nucleic acid hybrids on microarrays. Comparison of the UPT reporter to cyanin 5 (Cy5) in a low-complexity model system showed a two order of maginitude linear relationship between phosphor luminescence and target concentration and resulted in an excellent correlation between the two reporter systems for variable target concentrations (R2 = 0.95). However, UPT proved to be superior in sensitivity, even though a wide-field microscope equipped with a xenon lamp was used. This higher sensitivity was demonstrated by complementary DNA (cDNA) microarray hybridizations using cDNAs for housekeeping genes as probes and complex cDNA as target. These results suggest that a UPT reporter technology in combination with a dedicated IR laser array-scanner holds significant promise for various microarray applications.  相似文献

The concept of a completely new and novel photobioreactor consisting of various compartments each with a specific light regime is described. This is in response to the debate and development which have taken place in recent years concerning photobioreactor design and closed systems. It is well known that algae can photo-acclimate to various light intensities. At the extremes, they can be high light (HL) or low light (LL) acclimated. Both HL and LL acclimated algae typically have very specific characteristics indicating the plasticity of the organisms, which have developed specific strategies during evolution to cope with continuous and dynamic light fields. Not only are these considerations important in photobioreactor design, but also for the production of certain biocompounds, whose synthesis has specific light requirements. In the continuous flow photobioreactor described here, algal cells acclimated to different light conditions together permit utilization of the entire light gradient found in an optically dense medium, such as in a high-density culture. Compared to a single compartment vertical flat-plate photobioreactor, the multicompartment reactor yielded a 37% higher productivity rate. This is a significant improvement in photobioreactor performance.  相似文献

In this communication, novel and simplified structure Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells, which nominally consist of only a CIGS photoabsorber layer sandwiched between back and front contact layers but yet demonstrate high photovoltaic efficiencies, are reported. To realize this accomplishment, Si‐doped CIGS films grown by the three‐stage coevaporation method, B‐doped ZnO transparent conductive oxide front contact layers deposited by chemical vapor deposition, and heat–light soaking treatments are used. Si‐doping of CIGS films is found to modify the film surfaces and grain boundary properties and also affect the alkali metal distribution profiles in CIGS films. These effects are expected to contribute to improvements in buffer‐free CIGS device performance. Heat–light soaking treatments, which are occasionally performed to improve conventional buffer‐based CIGS device performance, are found to be also effective in enhancing buffer‐free CIGS photovoltaic efficiencies. This result suggests that the mechanism behind the beneficial effects of heat–light soaking treatments originates from CIGS bulk issues and is independent of the buffer materials. Consequently, over 16.5% efficiencies, including an independently certified value, are demonstrated from completely buffer‐free CIGS photovoltaic devices.  相似文献

Thermodynamic parameters characterizing protein stability can be obtained for a fully reversible folding/unfolding system directly by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). However, the reversible DSC profile can be altered by an irreversible step causing aggregation. Here, to obtain insight into amyloid fibrils, ordered and fibrillar aggregates responsible for various amyloidoses, we studied the effects on human beta(2)-microglobulin and hen egg-white lysozyme of a combination of agitation and heating. Aggregates formed by mildly agitating protein solutions in the native state in the presence of NaCl were heated in the cell of the DSC instrument. For beta(2)-microglobulin, with an increase in the concentration of NaCl at neutral pH, the thermogram began to show an exothermic transition accompanied by a large decrease in heat capacity, followed by a kinetically controlled thermal response. Similarly, the aggregated lysozyme at a high concentration of NaCl revealed a similar distinct transition in the DSC thermogram over a wide pH range. Electron microscopy demonstrated the conformational change into amyloid fibrils. Taken together, the combined use of agitation and heating is a powerful way to generate amyloid fibrils from two proteins, beta(2)-microglobulin and hen egg-white lysozyme, and to evaluate the effects of heat on fibrillation, in which the heat capacity is crucial to characterizing the transition.  相似文献

We evaluated the responses in growth, biomass allocation, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance, to changes in light in woody seedlings from the tropical deciduous forest in Mexico, which shows a highly seasonal rain pattern. We studied ten species, which differed by 30-fold in relative growth rate (RGR). We analyzed plant growth in two contrasting light levels during 52 days and two transfers: from high to low (HL) and from low to high (LH) light intensity, and the respective controls in high (HH) and low (LL) light for another 52 days. The photosynthetic capacity (A max) and stomatal conductance were measured at the day of the transfer between light conditions and at the end of the experiment. Species with high RGR showed the largest changes in RGR in response to contrasting light conditions (HH/LL ratio), and species with low RGR showed low responses. The fast-growing species were the most plastic, followed by species with intermediate growth rates, with the slow-growing species being the least plastic. Fast-growing species achieved higher maximum photosynthetic capacities (A max) and stomatal conductance and higher response to light than slow-growing species. Species with high RGR showed a low RGR HH/LH ratio, suggesting a large response of L plants when transfered to H. The RGR of the species were associated with species specific leaf area and with the response in the leaf area, net assimilation rate and leaf weight ratio, suggesting the importance of the leaf area produced and the leaf characteristics rather than root:shoot ratio in determining RGR. Considering that seed germination is expected at the beginning of the rainy period, seedlings of most of the species will experience high-light conditions during its early growth. There are large annual variations in the time required for canopy closure (35–75 days). The influence of these variations may have different effect on the species studied. Species with intermediate growth rate and intermediate response to light changes were less affected by light reduction than fast-growing species. The intermediate-RGR species Caesalpiniaeriostachys is the most abundant and widely distributed species, perhaps this could be in part due to its ability to acclimate to both light increases and decreases. The fast-growing species studied here can be found in open sites in the forest and in areas cleared for pasture growth. These fast-growing species eventually reach the canopy, although this may require several canopy openings during their lives, which implies juvenile shade tolerance. In the tropical deciduous forest juvenile pioneer trees also benefit from the temporary high light available caused by the dry period during the rainy season. The slow-growing species Celaenodendronmexicanum forms small patches of monospecific forest; the adult trees are not completely deciduous, and they retain their old leaves for a long time period before shedding. Thus seedlings of this species may receive lower levels of light, in agreement with its shade tolerance and its lower response to light increases. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Heteroblasty is an encompassing term referring to ontogenetic changes in the plant shoot. A shaded environment is known to affect the process of heteroblastic development; however, it is not known whether crowded or high density growing conditions can also alter heteroblasty. Compound leaves of the shade-intolerant Acacia implexa allocate less biomass per unit photosynthetic area than transitional leaves or phyllodes and it is hypothesized that this trait will convey an advantage in a crowded environment. Compound leaves also have larger photosynthetic capture area - a trait known to be advantageous in shade. This studied tested the hypothesis that more compound leaves will be developed under shade and crowded environments. Furthermore, this species should undergo optimal allocation of biomass to shoots and roots given shaded and crowded environments. METHODS: A full factorial design of irradiance (high and low) and density levels (high, medium and low) on three populations sourced from varying rainfall regions (high, medium and low) was established under controlled glasshouse conditions. Traits measured include the number of nodes expressing a compound leaf, biomass allocation to shoots and roots, and growth traits. Key Results A higher number of nodes expressed a compound leaf under low irradiance and in high density treatments; however, there were no significant interactions across treatments. Phenotypes strongly associated with the shade avoidance syndrome were developed under low irradiance; however, this was not observed under high density. There was no significant difference in relative growth rates across light treatments, but growth was significantly slower in a crowded environment. Conclusions Heteroblastic development in Acacia can be altered by shade and crowded environments. In this experiment, light was clearly the most limiting factor to growth in a shaded environment; however, in a crowded environment there were additional limiting resources to growth.  相似文献

The effects of varying intensities of light on plants depend on when they occur, even if the total amount of light received is kept constant. We designed an experiment using two clones of robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) intercropped with shelter trees in such a way that allowed us to compare coffee bushes shaded in the morning (SM) with those shaded in the afternoon (SA), and then confronting both with bushes receiving full sunlight over the course of the day (FS). The SM bushes displayed better gas‐exchange performance than their SA and FS counterparts, in which the capacity for CO2 fixation was mainly constrained by stomatal (SA bushes) and biochemical (FS bushes) factors. Physiological traits associated with light capture were more responsive to temporal fluctuations of light rather than to the amount of light received, although this behavior could be a clone‐specific response. The activity of key antioxidant enzymes differed minimally when comparing the SM and SA clones, but was much larger in FS clones. No signs of photoinhibition or cell damage were found regardless of the light treatments. Acclimations to varying light supplies had no apparent additional cost for constructing and maintaining the leaves regardless of the light supply. Both the SM and SA individuals displayed higher return in terms of revenue streams (e.g. higher mass‐based light‐saturated photosynthetic rates, photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiencies and long‐term water use efficiencies) than their FS counterparts. In conclusion, shading may improve the physiological performance of coffee bushes growing in harsh, tropical environments.  相似文献

Slow light devices with buffering capability play a critical role in all-optical signal processing. In this paper, multiple slow light phenomena are implemented based on plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) in our device. The device mainly consists of dual tooth cavities coupled with stub resonators, respectively. Temporal coupled-mode theory model illustrates that the triple PIT phenomena can be achieved based on different formation mechanisms. The simulation results calculated by the finite-difference time-domain method reveal that significant slow light response occurs at two wavelength regions. In addition, the parameters of structure have an important influence on PIT response and slow light characteristics. Moreover, the separate manipulation of wavelength, transmission and group index at transparency peak can be achieved in different slow light channels by adjusting the structural parameters. This plasmonic device is of great significance for the design of optical networks on chips.

The success of competitive interactions between plants determines the chance of survival of individuals and eventually of whole plant species. Shade-tolerant plants have adapted their photosynthesis to function optimally under low-light conditions. These plants are therefore capable of long-term survival under a canopy shade. In contrast, shade-avoiding plants adapt their growth to perceive maximum sunlight and therefore rapidly dominate gaps in a canopy. Daylight contains roughly equal proportions of red and far-red light, but within vegetation that ratio is lowered as a result of red absorption by photosynthetic pigments. This light quality change is perceived through the phytochrome system as an unambiguous signal of the proximity of neighbors resulting in a suite of developmental responses (termed the shade avoidance response) that, when successful, result in the overgrowth of those neighbors. Shoot elongation induced by low red/far-red light may confer high relative fitness in natural dense communities. However, since elongation is often achieved at the expense of leaf and root growth, shade avoidance may lead to reduction in crop plant productivity. Over the past decade, major progresses have been achieved in the understanding of the molecular basis of shade avoidance. However, uncovering the mechanisms underpinning plant response and adaptation to changes in the ratio of red to far-red light is key to design new strategies to precise modulate shade avoidance in time and space without impairing the overall crop ability to compete for light.  相似文献

Circadian clocks with characteristic period (τ) can be entrained to light/dark (LD) cycles by means of (i) phase shifts which are due to D/L “dawn” and/or L/D “dusk” transitions, (ii) period changes associated with long-term light exposure, or (iii) by combinations of the above possibilities. Based on stability analysis of a model circadian clock it was predicted that nocturnal burrowing mammals would benefit less from period responses than their diurnal counterparts. The model further predicted that maximal stability of circadian clock is reached when the clock slightly changes both its phase and period in response to light stimuli. Analyses of empirical phase response curve (PRC) and period response curve (τRC) of some diurnal and nocturnal mammals revealed that PRCs of both diurnal and nocturnal mammals have similar waveform while τRCs of nocturnal mammals are of smaller amplitude than those of diurnal mammals. The shape of the τRC also changes with age and with increasing strength of light stimuli. During erratic fluctuations in light intensity under different weather conditions, the stability of phase of entrainment of circadian clocks appears to be achieved by an interplay between phase and period responses and the strength of light stimuli.  相似文献

Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)‐conjugated polymers are a versatile class of semiconductors for application in organic solar cells because of their tunable optoelectronic properties. A record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.4% was recently achieved for DPP polymers, but further improvements are required to reach true efficiency limits. Using five DPP polymers with different chemical structures and molecular weights, the device performance of polymer:fullerene solar cells is systematically optimized by considering device polarity, morphology, and light absorption. The polymer solubility is found to have a significant effect on the optimal device polarity. Soluble polymers show a 10–25% increase in PCE in inverted device configurations, while the device performance is independent of device polarity for less soluble DPP derivatives. The difference seems related to the polymer to fullerene weight ratio at the ZnO interface in inverted devices, which is higher for more soluble DPP polymers. Optimization of the nature of the cosolvent to narrow the fibril width of polymers in the blends toward the exciton diffusion length enhances charge generation. Additionally, the use of a retroreflective foil increases absorption of light. Combined, the effects afford a PCE of 9.6%, among the highest for DPP‐based polymer solar cells.  相似文献

Despite a rapid increase in light harvesting efficiencies, organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) exhibit relatively inefficient photocurrent generation in the UV region and severe degradation when exposed to UV light and humidity. Herein, to enhance UV and humidity stability as well as photocurrent generating efficiency, a water‐repellent platinum(II) complex, Pt‐F , is developed as a luminescent photon downshifting layer (PDL) for PSCs. The Pt‐F PDL is fabricated on the glass substrate of a PSC using ultrasonic spray deposition, resulting in a considerably higher crystallinity and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) than those fabricated by conventional spin‐coating processes (PLQYs of 77% and 19%, respectively). A maximum device performance of 22.0% is achieved through the addition of a PDL coating to a 21.4% efficient PSC owing to the long‐range photon downshifting effect of Pt‐F , as confirmed by the enhanced spectral response of the device in the UV region. Moreover, remarkable improvements in UV and humidity stability are observed in Pt‐F ‐coated PSCs. The versatile effects of the Pt‐F ‐based PDL, when fabricated by ultrasonic spray deposition, suggest wide ranging applicability that can improve the performance and stability of other optoelectronic devices.  相似文献

Significantly increased power conversion efficiency (PCE) of polymer solar cells (PSCs) is achieved by applying a plasmonic enhanced light trapping strategy to a low bandgap conjugated polymer, poly(indacenodithiophene‐ co‐phananthrene‐quinoxaline) (PIDT‐PhanQ) and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) based bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) system. By doping both the rear and front charge‐selecting interfacial layers of the device with different sizes of Au NPs, the PCE of the devices is improved from 6.65% to 7.50% (13% enhancement). A detailed study of processing, characterization, microscopy, and device fabrication is conducted to understand the underlying mechanism for the enhanced device performance. The success of this work provides a simple and generally applicable approach to enhance light harnessing of low bandgap polymers in PSCs.  相似文献

Photochemical response to drought acclimation in two sunflower genotypes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The effects of drought acclimation on CO2 assimilation and light utilization were investigated in two sunflower genotypes ( Helianthus annuus L., T32 and Viki) in relation to water deficit and/or high light conditions. Drought interaction with PSII efficiency was observed in the genotype T32 with a sustained decrease in the potential photochemical efficiency of PSII, Fn/Fm. In response to drought acclimation, T32 displayed some tendency to accumulate closed PSII traps (higher value of 1-qp) without an enhancement of thermal deactivation (Stem-Volmer non-photochemical quenching, NPQ). Irrespective of the growth conditions (growth chamber or greenhouse), only Viki was responsive to drought acclimation, with (1) increased net photosynthesis in well-watered plants, (2) higher maintenance of photochemical electron transfer under water deficit and/or high light, (3) limited PSII inactivation (lower value of 1-qp) through increased non-photochemical energy dissipation (Stern-Volmer NPQ) which was readily reversible even at low leaf water potentials, and (4) higher Fv/Fm recovery after high light treatment. Additionally, drought acclimation delayed turgor loss during subsequent water stress in Viki. Thus, the response to drought acclimation, with an adjustment of water relations and of energy utilization by PSII, was observed under both growth conditions and was mainly genotype dependent.  相似文献

Flatbed scanners are the most frequently used reading instrument for radiochromic film dosimetry because its low cost, high spatial resolution, among other advantages. These scanners use a fluorescent lamp and a CCD array as light source and detector, respectively. Recently, manufacturers of flatbed scanners replaced the fluorescent lamp by light emission diodes (LED) as a light source. The goal of this work is to evaluate the performance of a commercial flatbed scanner with LED based source light for radiochromic film dosimetry. Film read out consistency, response uniformity, film-scanner sensitivity, long term stability and total dose uncertainty was evaluated. In overall, the performance of the LED flatbed scanner is comparable to that of a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL). There are important spectral differences between LED and CCFL lamps that results in a higher sensitivity of the LED scanner in the green channel. Total dose uncertainty, film response reproducibility and long-term stability of LED scanner are slightly better than those of the CCFL. However, the LED based scanner has a strong non-uniform response, up to 9%, that must be adequately corrected for radiotherapy dosimetry QA. The differences in light emission spectra between LED and CCFL lamps and its potential impact on film-scanner sensitivity suggest that the design of a dedicated flat-bed scanner with LEDs may improve sensitivity and dose uncertainty in radiochromic film dosimetry.  相似文献

The device performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs) is strongly dependent on the blend morphology. One of the strategies for improving PSC performance is side‐chain engineering, which plays an important role in controlling the aggregation properties of the polymers and thus the domain crystallinity/purity of the donor–acceptor blends. In particular, for a family of high‐performance donor polymers with strong temperature‐dependent aggregation properties, the device performances are very sensitive to the size of alkyl chains, and the best device performance can only be achieved with an optimized odd‐numbered alkyl chain. However, the synthetic route of odd‐numbered alkyl chains is costly and complicated, which makes it difficult for large‐scale synthesis. Here, this study presents a facile method to optimize the aggregation properties and blend morphology by employing donor polymers with a mixture of two even‐numbered, randomly distributed alkyl chains. In a model polymer system, this study suggests that the structural and electronic properties of the random polymers comprising a mixture of 2‐octyldodecyl and 2‐decyltetradecyl alkyl chains can be systematically tuned by varying the mixing ratio, and a high power conversion efficiency (11.1%) can be achieved. This approach promotes the scalability of donor polymers and thus facilitates the commercialization of PSCs.  相似文献

Growth-survival trade-offs play an important role in niche differentiation of tropical tree species in relation to light-gradient partitioning. However, the mechanisms that determine differential species performance in response to light and soil resource availability are poorly understood. To examine responses to light and soil nutrient availability, we grew seedlings of five tropical tree species for 12 mo at < 2 and 18 percent full sunlight and in two soil types representing natural contrasts in nutrient availability within a lowland dipterocarp forest in North Borneo. We chose two specialists of nutrient-rich and nutrient-poor soils, respectively, and one habitat generalist. Across all species, growth was higher in high than low light and on more nutrient rich soil. Although species differed in growth rates, the ranking of species, in terms of growth, was consistent across the four treatments. Nutrient-rich soils improved seedling survival and increased growth of three species even under low light. Slower-growing species increased root allocation and reduced specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area ratio (LAR) in response to decreased nutrient supply. All species increased LAR in response to low light. Maximum growth rates were negatively correlated with survival in the most resource-limited environment. Nutrient-poor soil specialists had low maximum growth rates but high survival at low resource availability. Specialists of nutrient-rich soils, plus the habitat generalist, had the opposite suite of traits. Fitness component trade-offs may be driven by both light and belowground resource availability. These trade-offs contribute to differentiation of tropical tree species among habitats defined by edaphic variation.  相似文献
