Ecological communities are defined by species interacting dynamically in a given location at a given time, and can be conveniently represented as networks of interactions. Pairwise interactions can be ascribed to one of five main types, depending on their outcome for the species involved: amensalism, antagonism (including predation, parasitism and disease), commensalism, competition or mutualism. While most studies have dealt so far with networks involving one single type of interaction at a time, often focusing on a specific clade and/or guild, recent studies are being developed that consider networks with more than one interaction type and across several levels of biological organisation. We review these developments and suggest that three main frameworks are in use to investigate the properties of multiple interactions networks: ‘expanded food‐webs’, ‘multilayer networks’ and ‘equal footing networks’. They differ on how interactions are classified and implemented in mathematical models, and on whether the effect of different interaction types is expressed in the same units. We analyse the mathematical and ecological assumptions of these three approaches, and identify some of the questions that can be addressed with each one of them. Since the overwhelming majority of studies on multiple interactions are theoretical and use artificially generated data, we also provide recommendations for the incorporation of field data in such studies.  相似文献

Ecosystems today increasingly suffer invasions by multiple invasive species. Complex interactions between invasive species can have different fitness implications for each invader, which can in turn determine the future progression of their invasions and result in differential impacts on native species and ecosystems. To this end, through pair-wise and group scale experiments, we examined possible interaction outcomes, competition effects and their potential fitness implications for two widespread invasive species of crayfish that increasingly co-occur in freshwater ecosystems of Europe (Pacifastacus leniusulus and Orconectes limosus). In all trials, P. leniusculus demonstrated the potential to outcompete O. limosus in both staged encounters and direct resource competition, being more likely to win heterospecific agonistic encounters and to acquire shelters at a higher rate. Observed dyadic dominance was translated to a broader social context of group-scale experiments, in which dominance of P. leniusculus was further strengthened by size differential between species. O. limosus was not able to compensate for competitive pressure by the dominant P. leniusculus and suffered wet weight loss and more frequent injuries in the presence of P. leniusculus. While both species are detrimental to native ecosystems, the ability of P. leniusculus to withstand competition pressure from another successful invasive species underscores its potential to establish dominant populations. Our results highlight the importance of understanding interspecies competition in prioritizing potential management activities or control efforts in contact zones.  相似文献

Definitions are given for weak and strong sufficient cause interactions in settings in which the outcome is binary and in which there are two exposures of interest that are categorical or ordinal. Weak sufficient cause interactions concern cases in which a mechanism will operate under certain values of the two exposures but not when one or the other of the exposures takes some other value. Strong sufficient cause interactions concern cases in which a mechanism will operate under certain values of the two exposures but not when one or the other of the exposures takes any other value. Empirical conditions are derived for such interactions when exposures have two or three levels and are related to regression coefficients in linear and log-linear models. When the exposures are binary, the notions of a weak and a strong sufficient cause interaction coincide, but not when the exposures are categorical or ordinal. The results are applied to examples concerning gene-gene and gene-environment interactions.  相似文献

Humic substances and their organic-mineral compounds are the first stage in transformation of biotic residues into stable geopolymers, which comprise the main reservoir of organic C in the biosphere. Early appearance of HS in the Earth’s history is of principal importance for the understanding of geo-biological processes on land in the past. However, there is no fossil record of HS before land colonization by lignified vegetation (400 Ma). When the first soil HS were formed? Could HS be synthesized in the Precambrian before plants and mosses terrestrialization? The formation of HS occurs in mesophilic aerobic conditions and requires presence of oxidative catalysts and production of aromatic (phenolic) precursors by biota. In this paper, humification processes in algo-myco-bacterial and lichen communities are discussed from actualistic point of view. These communities are considered as a relict ecosystem, which could dominate on land during the Neoproterozoic-Early Paleozoic (1–0.5 Ga).  相似文献

Anesthetics such as isoflurane are known to cause apoptosis in the developing mammalian brain. However, isoflurane may have protective effects on the heart via relieving ischemia and downregulating genes related to apoptosis. Ischemic preconditioning, e.g. through the use of low levels of carbon monoxide (CO), has promise in preventing ischemia-reperfusion injury and cell death. However, it is still unclear how it either triggers the stress response in neonatal hearts. For this reason, thirty-three microRNAs (miRNAs) known to be differentially expressed following anesthesia and/or ischemic or hypoxic heart damage were investigated in the hearts from neonatal mice exposed to isoflurane or low level of CO, using an air-exposed control group. Only miR-93-5p increased with isoflurane exposure, which may be associated with the suppression of cell death, autophagy, and inflammation. By contrast, twelve miRNAs were differentially expressed in the heart following CO treatment. Many miRNAs previously shown to be responsible for suppressing cell death, autophagy, and myocardial hypertrophy were upregulated (e.g., 125b-3p, 19-3p, and 21a-5p). Finally, some miRNAs (miR-103-3p, miR-1a-3p, miR-199a-1-5p) which have been implicated in regulating energy balance and cardiac contraction were also differentially expressed. Overall, this study demonstrated that CO-mediated miRNA regulation may promote ischemic preconditioning and cardioprotection based on the putative protective roles of the differentially expressed miRNAs explored herein and the consistency of these results with those that have shown positive effects of CO on heart viability following anesthesia and ischemia-reperfusion stress.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12192-021-01199-0.  相似文献

1 Responses to spatial heterogeneity of soil nutrients were tested in 10 plant species that differ in life form and successional status, but which co-occur in the South Carolina coastal plain. The morphological responses of the root system were tested by assessing scale (represented by root mass and root length densities), precision (preferential proliferation of roots in nutrient-rich patches compared with less fertile patches) and discrimination (ability to detect and proliferate within the richest patches when patches vary in nutrient concentration). We also investigated sensitivity (growth benefits gained as spatial heterogeneity of nutrients increases, measured as total biomass).
2 Ten individuals of each species were grown in pots under four treatments that had differing nutrient distribution but the same overall nutrient addition. Plants were harvested when roots reached pot edge.
3 We observed high variation between species in scale, precision and sensitivity. No significant discrimination responses were observed, although greatest root mass density occurred at intermediate fertility levels for all species.
4 We rejected the hypothesis that scale and precision are negatively correlated. Indeed, in herbaceous species alone, scale and precision were positively correlated.
5 Sensitivity was not closely related to precision, indicating that proliferation of roots in fertile patches does not always yield growth benefits in heterogeneous soils. Further, some sensitive species had very low precision, suggesting that a positive growth response in heterogeneous environments may be related to plasticity in physiology or root life span, rather than morphology.
6 Plant life form was not correlated with precision or sensitivity. However, scale of response was greater in herbs than in woody plants, possibly because the two life forms develop root systems at different rates.  相似文献

A modified version of Schoener's non-linear competition model is presented. The model describes the competitive dynamics of two species competing for a common resource. A second resource made available by species 1 for the exclusive use of species 2 is also present. This second resource is generated in an undefined way from the common resource. The presence of the exclusive resource serves to prevent the extinction of species 2 even when that species is at a great competitive disadvantage in obtaining the common resource. A feedback loop is established, dependent on the exclusive resource, making possible an increase in numbers of species 2 as the numbers of species 1 increase. This is represented as a reversal in the slope of the species 2 isocline. The behavior of the isoclines of both species is examined as certain key parameters are varied. The model is related to the results obtained from experiments involving Tribolium and Drosophila.  相似文献

This paper considers the dynamics of a two-dimensional discrete-time model for host-parasitoid interactions, and shows that the model has two attractors: the fixed point where two species coexist and a boundary cycle where the parasitoid is absent. The analysis with the Liapunov exponent confirms that this kind of bistability is common in this model. The generality of this phenomenon in host-parasitoid interactions is also discussed.  相似文献

Actinobacteria produce a variety of secondary metabolites that can influence the survival or behaviour of other organisms. The understanding of the ecological roles of actinobacteria has significantly improved in the past decades, but a systematic insight into the interactions between actinobacteria and other microbes in nature is warranted. Here, we studied the pairwise effects of actinobacteria on other microbes isolated from red soils under different nutritional conditions. We found that neutral effects dominated the interactions, accounting for 68.1% of the interactions in eutrophic conditions and for a significantly higher proportion (86.2%) in oligotrophic conditions. High nutrient levels boosted active metabolism of actinobacteria and generally made them more aggressive, supporting the stress gradient hypothesis. The secondary metabolites produced by actinobacteria played a pivotal role in interference competition with other microbes, of which the role of desferrioxamine siderophores could not be ignored. Niche overlap seemed to be another cause of competition, notably under oligotrophic conditions. Moreover, the large-scale phylogeny had a much greater impact on the interaction than the location origin of the microbes. These results provide an understanding of the coexistence of actinobacteria with other microbes in nature and suggest neutrality as a key mechanism for maintaining microbial diversity in soils.  相似文献

Cannibalism is a potentially important factor in the regulation of populations in a range of habitats. The intensity of this biotic factor may be determined by both intra and interspecific interactions. Cancer pagurus and Porcellana platycheles are two co-occurring decapods on Atlantic rocky shores. In laboratory mesocosms, we investigated intra and intersize class cannibalistic and interspecific predatory behaviours in those species. We addressed the effects of prey and predator densities, food, starvation, alternative prey and habitat type. No agonistic behaviour was noted in P. platycheles, suggesting a non-aggressive co-existence between gregarious individuals. Predation of C. pagurus on P. platycheles was intense, possibly accounting for the spatial segregation observed in the natural environment. Cannibalism among C. pagurus juveniles was low and only on vulnerable prey (i.e. at moulting), suggesting a non-aggressive co-existence among juveniles. However, intersize class cannibalism in C. pagurus was intense (ontogenetic shift), possibly reflecting the juvenile-adult segregation in the natural environment. Prey and predator densities, food and habitat type strongly influenced this behaviour. Possible interference among cannibals was noted, with lower prey consumption at high predator density. Food supply alone had more effect on cannibalistic rate than did alternative prey (P. platycheles) and predator starvation. Structurally complex habitats (small pebble and Fucus serratus habitats) yielded higher prey survival than the sandy habitat, and the behaviours of both prey and cannibals reflected the small-scale spatial distribution of individuals in the wild. Intersize class cannibalism and interspecific agonistic relationships may account for the intertidal distribution of crab species at low tide.  相似文献

Large differences in leaf physiology and morphology between ontogenetic stages of a single woody species have often been observed. Far less attention, however, has been devoted to studying the ontogenetic changes observed in leaf phenology patterns, despite the relevance of leaf phenology in determining the leaf carbon balance and leaf and plant mortality. Leaf emergence patterns and leaf longevity were studied in the saplings and mature trees of the evergreen Quercus ilex and the deciduous Quercus faginea. Our aim here was to analyze and interpret the possible tree-age related differences in these leaf traits. Unlike the adults, in which only one flush of leaf growth was observed, several leaf cohorts were produced within each year in the saplings. Sapling leaves showed a lower mean duration than those of the adults. However, Q. faginea saplings exhibited large plasticity in leaf longevity, which was not seen in the case of Q. ilex. The differences in leaf emergence patterns and in leaf longevity between growth stages seemed to be related to differences in resource availability for leaf production and in leaf mass per unit area, respectively. We propose that the sequential leaf development in saplings may be an important mechanism enabling tree species to cope with resource limitation in the early stages of life.  相似文献
