Spawning redd superimposition of introduced, spring-spawning rainbow trout,Oncorhynchus mykiss, on native, fall-spawning Dolly varden,Salvelinus malma, and white-spotted charr,S. leucomaenis, were examined in a small stream in Hokkaido, Japan. The stream reaches in which Dolly Varden and white-sported charr redds were observed in fall 1997 greatly overlapped with the reaches in which rainbow trout redds were recorded in spring 1998. Spawning microhabitats were also similar between trout and the two charr species. Thirteen and 3% of Dolly Varden and white-spotted charr redds, respectively, were superimposed by rainbow trout redds. The eggs or alevins in the disturbed charr redds were potentially damaged because charrs were not likely to have emerged from the redds before the superimposition occurred. In sufficiently great abundance, introduced rainbow trout may negatively impact native charr populations by dislodging the latter’s spawning redds.  相似文献

We evaluated overlap in microhabitat use between nonnative rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and native Little Colorado spinedace, Lepidomeda vittata, a federally threatened cyprinid, in natural and experimental settings. In natural settings, we also examined occurrence and microhabitat use of two other native fishes, speckled dace, Rhinichthys osculus, and bluehead sucker, Catostomus discobolus. Native species co-occurred, as did rainbow trout and bluehead sucker. However, occurrences of Little Colorado spinedace and speckled dace were not significantly correlated with occurrence of rainbow trout. Total lengths of all three native species were significantly smaller at allopatric sites than at sites sympatric with rainbow trout. Microhabitat characteristics at sites with rainbow trout did not differ from those where the other three species were found, but did differ among the native species. In laboratory experiments with Little Colorado spinedace and rainbow trout, rainbow trout used the lower depth zone most, and spinedace increased use of the lower depth zone upon addition of rainbow trout. In addition, species tended to co-occur in zones, but used cover independently of one-another, suggesting a low level of agonistic interactions. However, after addition of a high density of rainbow trout, spinedace tended to use cover less than before. We suggest that the species can coexist at low rainbow trout densities. Potential negative effects of rainbow trout on Little Colorado spinedace likely increase with increasing densities of rainbow trout, and rainbow trout likely affect smaller size classes of Little Colorado spinedace more than larger ones.  相似文献

Brown trout, Salmo trutta, and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, have been introduced to freshwaters in Hokkaido, Japan. Today, it is recognized that these introduced salmonids have negative impacts on native salmonids such as white-spotted charr, Salvelinus leucomaenis, and masu salmon, O. masou. In particular, interspecific competition may be an important mechanism that could contribute to the exclusion for native salmonids. In this study, experimental pairwise contests were conducted to compare interference competitive ability between native and introduced salmonids. We demonstrated that brown trout were competitively superior to white-spotted charr and masu salmon whereas rainbow trout were superior to white-spotted charr. We suggest that introduced brown trout negatively impact both white-spotted charr and masu salmon, and introduced rainbow trout negatively impact white-spotted charr.  相似文献

The development of populations of eyeflukes Diplostomum spathaceum and Tylodelphys clavata in trout introduced into Rutland Water is related to the availability of infected Limnaea pereger, the first intermediate host, and the differential resistance to eyeflukes in Salmo gairdneri and S. trutta. The numbers of snail and fish intermediate hosts were monitored from impoundment of the Gwash in 1974 to completion of the reservoir in 1978. High infection rates in coarse fish in the feeder streams in 1974 are related to high infection rates in Limnaea pereger. Large eyefluke populations in introduced rainbow trout but not in brown trout confirm their differential resistance. Differences in levels of infection in seine-netted and rod-caught rainbow trout suggest that heavily infected fish could not respond to the fishermens' lures. Reduced numbers of eyeflukes in rainbow trout from 1979 onwards are related to the vast increase in volume of the reservoir in 1977 and decrease in abundance of Limnaea pereger.  相似文献

Bile pigments in the bile of the rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri, tilapia, Tilapia nilotica, and pejerrey, Odonthetes bonariensis, were analyzed by HPLC and TLC.

Major bile pigments of rainbow trout and pejerrey were bilirubin glucuronides and ditauro-bilirubin, respectively. Ditaurobilirubin was not detected in rainbow trout and bilirubin glucuronides were scarcely found in pejerrey. Biliverdin seemed to be the sole bile pigment in tilapia, but it was a minor component in the other fish. These results are in accord with the previous reports in which the diversity of bile pigment composition was demonstrated in some fish.  相似文献

With the aim of characterizing the sex chromosomes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and to identify the sex chromosomes of coho salmon (O. kisutch), we used molecular markers OmyP9, 5S rDNA, and a growth hormone gene fragment (GH2), as FISH probes. Metaphase chromosomes were obtained from lymphocyte cultures from farm specimens of rainbow trout and coho salmon. Rainbow trout sex marker OmyP9 hybridizes on the sex chromosomes of rainbow trout, while in coho salmon, fluorescent signals were localized in the medial region of the long arm of one subtelocentric chromosome pair. This hybridization pattern together with the hybridization of a GH2 intron probe on a chromosome pair having the same morphology, suggests that a subtelocentric pair could be the sex chromosomes in this species. We confirm that in rainbow trout, one of the two loci for 5S rDNA genes is on the X chromosome. In males of this species that lack a heteromorphic sex pair (XX males), the 5S rDNA probe hybridized to both subtelocentrics This finding is discussed in relation to the hypothesis of intraspecific polymorphism of sex chromosomes in rainbow trout.  相似文献

The isolation and characterization of the receptor for vitellogenin from follicle membranes of the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, is described. Follicle membrane proteins subjected to SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and subsequently to either protein staining or ligand blotting with radiolabelled vitellogenin (125iodine-vitellogenin) demonstrated that the vitellogenin receptor has an apparent molecular mass of 200 kD (probably comprising of two 100-kD subunits) under non-reducing conditions. The vitellogenin binding sites were identified as specific receptors: binding was saturable and the binding sites were both tissue specific to follicle membranes and exhibited ligand specificity. Scatchard analyses of specific binding data revealed a single class of binding sites with a high affinity for rainbow trout vitellogenin (K d=8.2·10-9 mol·1-1). To infer the distribution pattern of introduced rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, we compared abiotic factors among tributaries with and without rainbow trout in the Atsuta River, Hokkaido, Japan. Rainbow trout were present in 10 of the 24 tributaries. Stepwise logistic regression analysis indicated that the occurrence of rainbow trout was more likely in low-gradient tributaries and was negatively correlated with elevation. Our results indicate that the successful establishment of rainbow trout can be predicted using abiotic factors, including elevation and gradient.  相似文献

A total of 4.1% infestation with Chilodonella spp. was found among fish studied in 144 tanks in 1987–1989, representing 14.0% of the tanks in which fish are reared at four salmonid farms in northern Finland. Two species were found, C. hexasticha and C. piscicola, and both occurred on salmon (Salmo salar L.), sea trout [S. trutta m. trutta (L.)] and brown trout [S. t. m. lacustris (L.)]. Variability was observed in the length and width of the C. piscicola specimens and the number of ciliary rows or kineties. Large specimens which had more kinetics than average for C. piscicola were found mainly on the skin of salmon aged 1–2 years. The number of kinetics in the right ciliary band was found in stepwise logistic regression analysis to be of importance when typing C. piscicola specimens. Fingerlings were found to be more susceptible to Chilodonella infestation than older fish, and mortality varied in the range 2–10% in the course of the epizootics in the three fish species. Most mortality cases were caused by C. hexasticha, occurring mainly on the gills of the fish. Chilodonella piscicola was most often found in salmon and occurred at lower water temperatures than C. hexasticha (mean water temperature when found for the first time being 13° C and 16° C, respectively).  相似文献

Upstream spawning migrations of mature brown trout, S. trutta , and rainbow trout, S. gairdneri , were studied in Liawenee Canal, Great Lake from 1949 to 1985. Brown trout migrations normally occurred from early April to mid-May and rainbow trout from late August to early November. In 1983, 16 425 brown trout and 1338 rainbow trout passed through a fixed upstream diversion trap. Brown trout spawning migrations occurred predominantly over the temperature range 6–10° C, while rainbow trout migrated predominantly over the range 5–11° C. Migrations peaked at water temperatures of 7.6°C (males) and 7.8°C (females) for brown trout, and 8.3°C (males) and 9.6°C (females) for rainbow trout. Rainbow trout migrations occurred at high flow conditions and were positively correlated with canal flow increases, while brown trout migrated under low canal flow. Mean length, weight and condition of rainbow trout of both sexes decreased significantly during migrations. Female brown trout decreased in weight and condition but not in length; male brown trout did not change in condition despite decreases in both length and weight during migrations. Overall sex ratio was 2:1 (female:male) for both species, with the relative proportion of male fish decreasing as migrations progressed. Age composition changed during migrations; dominant age classes were 3 < 4 < 5 + years for both species. Comparison of length, weight, condition and age revealed minor changes during the 37-year period 1949–1985.  相似文献

Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and crayfish, Orconectes virilis, have been introduced for the last century into North American streams inhabited by native fishes. We sought to determine the behavioral response of a federally threatened cyprinid, Little Colorado spinedace, Lepidomeda vittata, in the concurrent presence of multiple nonnative predators (rainbow trout and crayfish), as well as the response to the presence of a combination of native (Apache trout, Oncorhynchus apache) and nonnative (crayfish) predators. We held spinedace in artificial streams and exposed them to four treatments: (1) control, (2) crayfish added, (3) trout added, and (4) both crayfish and trout added. Only a single spinedace was consumed over the course of the experiments; it was captured and preyed upon by a crayfish. When both crayfish and Apache trout were present, spinedace response was similar to what it was when only Apache trout were present (decreased movement in and out of refuge), suggesting that crayfish and Apache trout did not mutually influence spinedace behavior. However, when both rainbow trout and crayfish were present, spinedace not only decreased movements in and out of refuge, but also decreased activity rates. We suggest that crayfish and rainbow trout mutually influence spinedace behavior and recommend control or elimination of crayfish and rainbow trout from spinedace critical habitat or potential reintroduction sites. In addition, potential reintroduction sites for Apache trout should be evaluated based on presence of crayfish and spinedace to avoid potential multiple predator interactions and negative effects on spinedace.  相似文献

Summary The zona radiata from unactivated and activated eggs from chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), chum salmon (O. kisutch), pink salmon (O. gorbuscha), brown trout (Salmo trutta), rainbow trout (S. gairdneri) and lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) were examined using scanning and transmission microscopy. The zona radiata in all species examined consisted of an outer adhesive coating, a thin densely staining zona radiata externa with pore canal plugs and a thick, fibrous zona radiata interna with a fibrous network on the inner surface. There was a two layer adhesive coating over the zona radiata externa in all species except pink salmon in which only one layer was observed. Summary The incidence of virus infections in three lepidopterous insect species was studied from 1965 to 1968 in alfalfa fields in California. The insects were the alfalfa caterpillar,Colias eurytheme; the beet armyworm,Spodoptera exigua; and the alfalfa looper,Autographa californica. InC. eurytheme, the major virus was a nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV); inS. exigua, a granulosis virus (GV) and an NPV; inA. californica, a GV. Virus epizootics did not develop in very high densities ofC. eurytheme. Virus epizootics occurred in low host densities of the three insect species, especially in populations ofA. californica. The virus acted as a density-dependent factor in the regulation of the populations ofS. exigua andA. californica. Temperature, humidity and rainfall had no marked effect on the incidence of virus infections.  相似文献

Differences in reaction distance to prey fish by piscivorous salmonids can alter predator–prey interactions under different visual conditions. We compared reaction distances of three piscivorous salmonids commonly found in western lakes: cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarki utah, rainbow trout, O. mykiss, and the nonnative lake char, Salvelinus namaycush. Reaction distances to salmonid prey were measured as functions of light and turbidity in a controlled laboratory setting. In addition, predation rates and swimming speeds of lake char preying on juvenile cutthroat trout were measured experimentally under a range of light levels. Reaction distances for cutthroat trout and rainbow trout increased rapidly as light levels increased, reaching relatively constant reaction distances at higher light levels. Reaction distances for lake char were similar to cutthroat trout and rainbow trout at the lower light levels; however, lake char reaction distances continued to increase with increasing light intensity to asymptote at distances 65% higher than those for both cutthroat and rainbow trout. Predation rates by lake char were low for the darkest light levels, increased rapidly under low light levels (0.50–0.75lx), and then declined to an intermediate rate at all higher light levels. Swimming speeds by lake char also increased rapidly from extremely low light conditions to a peak and declined to an intermediate level at light levels above 1.00lx. These results suggest that, above the saturation intensity threshold, piscivorous lake char react to fish prey at greater distances than do cutthroat trout and rainbow trout. These differences may help explain the decline of native trout following the introductions of nonnative lake char in lakes and reservoirs of western North America.  相似文献

Juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from three allopatric populations (LaHave, Sebago and Saint‐Jean) were placed into artificial streams with combinations of four non‐native salmonids: brown trout Salmo trutta, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch. Non‐additive effects, as evidenced by lower performance than predicted from weighted summed two‐species competition trials, were detected for S. salar fork length (LF) and mass, but not for survival, condition factor or riffle use. These data support emerging theory on niche overlap and species richness as factors that can lead to non‐additive competition effects.  相似文献

A complete cDNA clone encoding secreted IgM molecules was isolated from a spleen cDNA library of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). It encodes the leader peptide, VH, DH, JH, and the whole constant region of the secreted IgM molecule. We also studied the copy number of the IgM gene and an unusual RNA splicing mechanism which generates membrane IgM lacking the CH4 domain in rainbow trout. Amino acid sequence comparison of IgM protein sequences from this fish and other vertebrates indicates that some domains of IgM have evolved at a relatively constant rate. The evolution of salmoid fish including divergence time is discussed.  相似文献

The ontogeny and disease responses of Langerhans-like cells within lymphoid tissues of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, were investigated. These cells were studied in situ with the use of two markers: the ultrastructural presence of Birbeck-like granules and immunohistochemistry with an antibody against human langerin/CD207 that cross-reacts with salmonid tissues. The appearance of Birbeck-like granules was observed in rainbow trout at 2 weeks post-hatch (PH) in the thymus and anterior kidney prior to the development of the spleen. Spleen first appeared at 3 weeks PH in both Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout, and Birbeck-like granules were observed within cells of the newly developed spleens. The cross-reactivity of langerin as seen by immunohistochemistry was not clearly observed in kidney and spleen until 9 weeks PH, when a strong cytoplasmic reaction was observed. To study langerin-positive cells in spleen and kidney during disease, microsporidial gill disease (MGD) in rainbow trout was used as a known disease model inducing a strong cell-mediated adaptive immune response. Langerin-positive cells in healthy fish were seen predominantly in the spleen, and only low numbers were present in the anterior kidney. During MGD, langerin-positive cell numbers were elevated in the anterior kidney and were significantly higher during 5, 6, and 10 weeks post-exposure (PE) compared with healthy control tissue. During MGD, the distribution of langerin-positive cells in the spleen and anterior kidney shifted from having significantly higher numbers of cells in the spleen than in the kidney in controls and at 1 and 4 weeks PE to having a similar distribution of the cells in the two organs at 2, 3, 5, and 6 weeks PE. By 10 weeks PE, significantly higher numbers of langerin-positive cells occurred in the anterior kidney compared with the spleen.  相似文献

Impacts of alien rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) on critically endangered Berg River redfin (Pseudobarbus burgi), Cape kurper (Sandelia capensis) and Cape galaxias (Galaxias zebratus) in the upper Berg River were investigated in terms of predation and spatial interactions. Trout stomach contents revealed that invertebrates dominate trout diet within the study area, whilst only six fish were recovered from 45 stomachs. The apparent low fish predation success of O. mykiss within the stream suggests a smaller impact compared to that of other alien piscivores such as bass (Micropterus spp.). Galaxias zebratus was the only fish species identified as prey, and its conservation status in the river requires further investigation. Snorkelling surveys revealed that rainbow trout co-exist with S. capensis and adult P. burgi within pools on this river. Galaxias zebratus was absent from the pools, while P. burgi juveniles were segregated from rainbow trout along a depth gradient, possibly indicating avoidance behaviour. Sandelia capensis juveniles may avoid predation by hiding under rocks. Rainbow trout probably compete with indigenous fish for food and space in the pools, though this could not be quantified. The impacts of O. mykiss on all indigenous fauna within the river are likely to be density-dependent.  相似文献

In this study, we present evidence for the perception of different magnetic field parameters in a facultative anadromous fish species of the family Salmonidae. Magnetic field perception of the rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, was demonstrated with a heartbeat conditioning test. The electrocardiogram was measured with subcutaneously inserted silver wire electrodes in freely swimming fish. We demonstrate a conditioned response (i.e. a significant longer interval between two heartbeats) to an intensity/inclination shift for three adult and two juvenile rainbow trouts. Moreover, a conditioned response to a 90° direction shift was demonstrated for three adult and two juvenile trouts. These findings support the hypothesis that the rainbow trout is able to perceive different magnetic field parameters. Furthermore, the study demonstrates magnetosensation in different developmental stages in the rainbow trout, i.e. juvenile and adult fish.  相似文献
