Determination of crown-rump length from fetal long bones: humerus and femur   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Lengths of the ossified diaphysis of the humerus and femur were measured in 50 fetuses ranging from 65 to 290 mm Crown-Rump length. A significant correlation was found between the diaphyseal length and the CR length. No appreciable difference was noted in diaphyseal lengths of the humerus and femur in fetuses of 85 mm CR length or below. Various growth phases were observed. The difference in length of the femur and humerus is due to a comparative slow growth of the humerus during the later period of prenatal life. Diaphyseal growth rates of the humerus and femur are 0.18 mm and 0.21 mm respectively for every 1 mm increase in CR length. Regression coefficients for the lengths of the ossified shaft of the humerus and femur are 5.35 and 5.00 respectively. With the help of these coefficients, CR length of the fetus was estimated within a range of ± 15 mm. From the estimated CR length, age of the fetus was determined with the help of a standard age and size curve with reasonable accuracy.  相似文献

Studies on the formation of the extensor digitorum muscle morphological characteristics were carried out on material of 85 human fetuses (42 males and 43 females), 16 to 36 weeks old, and 45 adults (31 males and 14 females). Intermediary conclusions were drawn on probable changes occurring in the morphological formation of the muscle after birth, as a result of comparing proportions of the muscle at the fetal stage with its form in adults. In this work, the anthropometric method of study and statistical analysis of results have been applied. Analysis of the results in the fetal group has shown that all metrical characteristics of the muscle reach their maximum values at the end of the investigated ontogenetic space. This is, naturally, a consequence of evolution and growth of all fetal body measures, including elongation of forearms. However, the evolution of the individual muscle characteristics is not regular and though the direction of this growth is similar, its extent varies, and also differs slightly in sexual groups. Comparison of the values of muscle indices for 9 month old fetuses with the same indices for adults shows that relative dimensions of all investigated muscular characteristics decrease during the post-natal period except the relative length of the tendon.  相似文献

To find an effective routine screening method for small-for-dates fetuses 474 women with singleton pregnancies participated in a two-stage ultrasonic examination schedule. At the first-stage examination, which was conducted in early pregnancy, fetal crown-rump length or biparietal diameter was measured for an accurate assessment of gestational age, which was essential for interpreting the results of the second-stage examination. The second-stage examination was performed at 34-36 weeks and entailed measuring seven fetal variables, the results of which were assessed singly and in combination after delivery to identify the best indicator of small-for-dates fetuses. Fetal head measurements proved to be the least sensitive indicators of growth retardation, correctly identifying only 56-59% of cases. Measurements of trunk area and circumference, however, correctly identified 81% and 83% of cases respectively, but the most effective screening index was the product of crown-rump length and trunk area: with this index 34 out of 36 small-for-dates fetuses (94%) were correctly identified. Calculating the product of crown-rump length and trunk area from ultrasonic displays is quick and simple, and combined with the first-stage examination is a highly reliable screening method for small-for-dates fetuses.  相似文献

Real-time ultrasonography was used to detect pregnancy in 4 captive bottle-nose dolphins. Pregnancy was readily confirmed from around the 4th month of gestation by imaging fetal fluids and fetal movement. Periodic examination permitted monitoring of the viability of the fetuses by observation of their heart beat and movement, and serial measurements of skull diameter (occipito-frontal axis) and thoracic diameter was possible. A virus was isolated from uterine exudate of a cow and later identified as a herpesvirus that had no serologic relationship to several known viruses. The virus produced a febril response in 7 month old Holstein steers. Inoculation of the virus into bovine fetuses of various gestational ages resulted in death of some fetuses in the 3rd and 4th months of gestation. Some fetuses in the 3rd and 4th month, and all older than 4 months, survived the inoculation. These fetuses experienced a lymphoreticular activation and a humoral antibody response.  相似文献

Umbilical cord length has long been investigated as a potential marker of intrauterine events that may place the neonate at risk for future adverse developmental sequelae. Experimentally, significantly shortened cords have been reported in association with prenatal exposure to common drugs of abuse. This study in rats reports the time course of effects on umbilical cord length of a daily maternal ethanol gavage (3,200 mg/kg) from gestational day 6 through termination of pregnancy at either day 17, 18, 19, or 20. A total of 786 fetuses derived from 60 litters were examined. Control fetuses demonstrated a linear increase in umbilical cord length and body weight gain during late gestation, findings that support previous studies. The body weights of the ethanol-exposed fetuses were reduced significantly on all gestational days examined, indicating intrauterine growth retardation, a characteristic of fetal alcohol syndrome. Similarly, acute fetal akinesia as well as long-term sequelae stemming from impaired neurological development would result from the elevated blood ethanol levels achieved in this study. The umbilical cords of ethanol-exposed fetuses were significantly shorter on gestational days 19 and 20 in comparison to their controls, while cord lengths on days 17 and 18 were not shortened significantly. A stretch hypothesis has been proposed suggesting that the degree of fetal activity is the main determinant of umbilical cord length. In rats, there is a physiologic diminution of the volume of amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios) in late gestation (day 19 to term), which restricts fetal movements but does not appear to alter the linear relationships between gestational age and cord length in controls, thus arguing against the stretch hypothesis. However, cord lengths in the ethanol-exposed fetuses plateaued in late gestation, suggesting possible adherence to a stretch hypothesis. This dichotomy is discussed emphasizing fetal growth and activity as well as intrauterine space.  相似文献

Growth velocity curves of 19 biometrical parameters were established from 490 normal fetuses or neonates, who died in the perinatal period, and from 4,507 ultrasound examinations. There was a velocity fall for numerous parameters during the third trimester of gestation, but growth rate started up again after 38 weeks for some of them (femur length, biparietal diameter, crown-rump length, head circumference ...). No acceleration was found for body weight and crown-heel length by the end of gestation.  相似文献

本文用扫描电镜法研究了入胎儿的皮纹发生过程,包括初级真皮嵴、次级真皮嵴、真皮乳头和表皮隆线的发生。为研究人皮纹的发生和皮肤的异常提供了皮肤正常发育的形态学依据。共观察111例从第6周到第9个月胎儿的皮纹区皮肤,表明第3个月末胎儿开始形成初级真皮嵴,以后逐渐加深,至第16周嵴的顶端中央产生纵沟形成两条平行的次级真皮嵴;自19周后,次级真皮嵴局部隆起,由波浪形逐渐形成乳头。至30周乳头呈犬牙状。表皮隆线于第4—5月形成,随真皮乳头的增高而渐趋明显。至第6个月,全部皮纹图样已可辨认。本文还讨论了真皮乳头发生的过程。  相似文献

Fetuses from gilts with estrogen receptor (ESR) genotype AA (AA-AA and AA-AB) and BB (BB-AB and BB-BB) were compared at Day 35/36 of pregnancy, to examine whether fetal ESR genotype nested within maternal ESR genotype would affect fetal traits. Furthermore the relation of fetal body weight and fetal heart weight to various placental traits were evaluated relative to ESR genotype. Fetal and placental weight and length, and implantation surface area were not affected by fetal ESR genotype nested within maternal ESR genotype. Fetal weight was related similarly to placental length, placental weight, and implantation surface area: up to a certain threshold value (40 cm, 40 g and 250 cm2, respectively), an increase in the trait was associated with an increase of fetal weight. Thereafter, fetal weight did not change anymore. Thus, at Day 35/36 of pregnancy porcine fetuses seem to have a maximum growth potential. The percentage of AA-AA fetuses that had not reached this maximum growth potential was larger than of the other three genotype combinations studied, and therefore a higher subsequent fetal mortality may be expected in this group. Hearts of AA-AB fetuses were significantly heavier than those of BB-AB and BB-BB fetuses and tended to be heavier than those of AA-AA fetuses. The reason for this hypertrophy is unclear, but might be related to a difference in placental vascularity. Heart weight of fetuses from BB gilts increased with fetal weight, while heart weights of fetuses from AA gilts did not. Heart weight increased with an increase of placental length and implantation surface area up to 51 cm and 437 cm2, respectively, and thereafter decreased again. For BB-AB fetuses a similar relation was found between heart weight and placental weight, while heart weight of the other three genotype combinations remained unaffected as placental weight increased. The fetus and placenta are continuously changing during early pregnancy, therefore different mechanisms may change the demands for cardiac output. However, keeping in mind that placental size and blood volume are relatively large, placental vascularity and vascular development may play a major role. Therefore, further research on heart size, placental size and vascularity, relative to ESR genotype, is recommended.  相似文献

The mechanisms whereby exogenous growth hormone modulates intestinal structure and function in fish were investigated. Goldfish (Carassius auratus) were fed commercial flake diet sprayed with recombinant carp growth hormone (cGH) daily for 1 month. Control animals received food sprayed with the vehicle. After 1 month of daily feedings, body mass and length were determined, and animals were sacrificed to study intestinal characteristics. Sections of foregut were removed after determination of total gut length for measurement of leucine uptake, histology, and epithelial ultrastructure. Oral administration of cGH for 1 month resulted in a 40% increase in body mass and an 8% increase in body length above controls. Gut length was 43% greater and the gut length to body length ratio was 32% greater as a result of the cGH treatment. Feeding with cGH also resulted in a significant increase in leucine uptake and increased gut mucosal thickness. Analysis of transmission electron micrographs revealed significant increases in the microvillous height and density and epithelial surface area. The findings indicate that growth hormone added to feed may increase growth in fish, in part by significantly increasing gut length, mucosal thickness, and epithelial brush border surface area, leading to enhanced epithelial absorption.  相似文献

The growth of the hepatic weight was correlated to fetal parameters of maturity (gestational age, crown-rump length and weight) in 70 human fetuses ranging from 14 to 39 weeks post-conception using the allometric method. The growth of the hepatic weight presents moderate positive allometry relative to age and C-R length, and isometry relative to fetal weight. The coefficiens of correlation are very high (p less than 0.001, Table 1). This study presents growth curves of the hepatic weight useful in medical branches such as anatomy, forensic medicine, fetopathology, medical imagery, onstetrics and pediatrics.  相似文献

Teratogenic effects of nicotine on palate formation in mice   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Fetuses of pregnant CD-1 mice, exposed to intraperitoneal injection of 0.1% nicotine sulfate at a dose of 1.67 mg/kg body weight/day on gestational days 6-15, were compared with control (saline injected and non-injected) fetuses to assess the effects of nicotine on fetal growth in general and palatogenesis in particular. A total of 59 pregnant females (18 experimental and 41 control) were sacrificed on the 18 th gestational day and their fetuses were examined gross morphologically and histologically (using serial sections through the head in the frontal plane). Data analysis revealed that maternal weight gain, crown-rump length, fetal weight and head dimensions were significantly reduced in nicoted treated animals when compared to those of the controls. Histological examination revealed that 9.6% of fetuses of nicotine injected mothers presented clefts of the palate, whereas none of the control fetuses had that anomaly. It was concluded that nicotine has a detrimental effect on general growth and development as well as on palatogenesis of mice.  相似文献

A single injection of 50 microgram testosterone was given to fetal rats on day 17, 18, 19 or 20 of gestation. On day 21, the fetuses were removed from the mother under maternal ether anesthesia, and the length of the urovaginal septum was measured microscopically in female fetuses in order to assess the virilizing effect of testosterone. In fetuses treated with testosterone on day 17, the length of the urovaginal septum was comparable to that of oil-treated littermate controls. In fetuses treated on day 18, the length was significantly abridged compared with controls. In fetuses treated on day 19, the abridgment of the urovaginal septum was most marked. In fetuses treated on day 20, the length of the septum was again comparable to that of controls. The observations suggest that day 19 is the critical day for the virilizing effect of testosterone. Various amounts of testosterone and its metabolites including dihydrotestosterone, androstane-3 beta, 17beta-diol and androstane-3 alpha, 17beta-diol were injected into 19-day-old female fetuses, in order to test the dose relation to the virilizing effects of these steroids in terms of abridgment of the urovaginal septum. As a consequence, it was found that testosterone was the most effective for virilization.  相似文献

A method is described by which daily changes in the curved crown-rump length (CRL) of individual sheep fetuses were observed during the last 50 to 60 days of pregnancy. The mean discrepancy between the derived value for CRL and the CRL measured directly in eight fetuses aged between 100 and 135 days and in 12 lambs born at 143 to 150 days was 1.5 +/- 0.2 per cent (mean +/- s.e.). In adequately nourished ewes between 100 and 115 days of gestation growth rate showed a between-fetus range of 4.2 to 7.5 mm.day-1 (n=16), remained constant within each fetus until about 132 days and then decreased by about 27 per cent (n=4). Decreases in growth rate of about 30 to 44 per cent occurred within three days of the introduction of maternal undernutrition at 115 or 120 days of gestation (n=6) and in two other fetuses maternal undernutrition effected an almost complete cessation of growth. The relationship between fetal CRL and weight is described and some physiological implications of the results are discussed.  相似文献

The severity of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome was compared in pregnant gilts originating from high and low birth weight litters. One-hundred and eleven pregnant gilts experimentally infected with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus on gestation day 85 (±1) were necropsied along with their fetuses 21 days later. Ovulation rates and litter size did not differ between groups, but fetuses from low birth weight gilts were shorter, lighter and demonstrated evidence of asymmetric growth with large brain:organ weight ratios (i.e. brain sparing). The number of intrauterine growth retarded fetuses, defined by brain:organ weight ratios greater than 1 standard deviation from the mean, was significantly greater in low, compared to high, birth weight gilts. Although γδ T cells significantly decreased over time in high compared to low birth weight gilts, viral load in serum and tissues, gilt serum cytokine levels, and litter outcome, including the percent dead fetuses per litter, did not differ by birth weight group. Thus, this study provided no substantive evidence that the severity of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome is affected by dam birth weight. However, intrauterine growth retarded fetuses had lower viral loads in both fetal thymus and in endometrium adjacent to the umbilical stump. Crown rump length did not significantly differ between fetuses that survived and those that died at least one week prior to termination. Taken together, this study clearly demonstrates that birth weight is a transgenerational trait in pigs, and provides evidence that larger fetuses are more susceptible to transplacental PRRSv infection.  相似文献

Placental insufficiency, resulting in restriction of fetal substrate supply, is a major cause of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and increased neonatal morbidity. Fetal adaptations to placental restriction maintain the growth of key organs, including the heart, but the impact of these adaptations on individual cardiomyocytes is unknown. Placental and hence fetal growth restriction was induced in fetal sheep by removing the majority of caruncles in the ewe before mating (placental restriction, PR). Vascular surgery was performed on 13 control and 11 PR fetuses at 110-125 days of gestation (term: 150 +/- 3 days). PR fetuses with a mean gestational Po(2) < 17 mmHg were defined as hypoxic. At postmortem (<135 or >135 days), fetal hearts were collected, and cardiomyocytes were isolated and fixed. Proliferating cardiomyocytes were counted by immunohistochemistry of Ki67 protein. Cardiomyocytes were stained with methylene blue to visualize the nuclei, and the proportion of mononucleated cells and length and width of cardiomyocytes were measured. PR resulted in chronic fetal hypoxia, IUGR, and elevated plasma cortisol concentrations. Although there was no difference in relative heart weights between control and PR fetuses, there was an increase in the proportion of mononucleated cardiomyocytes in PR fetuses. Whereas mononucleated and binucleated cardiomyocytes were smaller, the relative size of cardiomyocytes when expressed relative to heart weight was larger in PR compared with control fetuses. The increase in the relative proportion of mononucleated cardiomyocytes and the relative sparing of the growth of individual cardiomyocytes in the growth-restricted fetus are adaptations that may have long-term consequences for heart development in postnatal life.  相似文献

The areal growth of the human fetal parietal bone is described using 51 dissected right parietal bones of Japanese fetuses ranging from the fifth month to term. Their shadows were taken on printing paper and analyzed by a sonic digitizer. The absolute growth of the projected area of the fetal parietal bones progresses at a fairly constant rate during the latter half of the fetal period, despite some deceleration in the 9–10th month. By allometric analysis, the allometric coefficients against crown-rump length are 2.201 for males, 2.202 for females, and 2.204 for both sexes, respectively. The allometry is essentially monophasic, showing no inflection point, indicating a change in the slope of the regression line; that is, the growth of the human fetal parietal bone is continuous with a constant specific growth rate. These results are discussed in connection with growth in thickness of the bone.  相似文献

Maternal treatment with methylmercury (MeHg) has been shown to induce a high frequency of cleft palate and produce growth retardation in rat and mouse fetuses, but the relation between these effects is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine if mandibular growth retardation was a factor that contributed to induction of cleft palate in C57BL/6J mice. Two doses of MeHg (10 mg/kg maternal body weight) were given subcutaneously on days 10 and 11 of gestation, and the fetuses were morphometrically studied on days 14, 15, and 18. Full clefts of the secondary palate were present in approximately half of the treated day 15 and 18 fetuses; therefore, the cleft palate (CP) and noncleft palate (NCP) groups were analyzed separately to facilitate identification of morphologic changes associated with the clefting. The results showed that, compared with controls, the day 14 MeHg-treated fetuses had significantly smaller placental weights, but only half of the fetuses had delayed palatal shelf elevation, reduced body weight, and delayed morphological development. However on day 15, the CP and the NCP groups had similar reductions in body weight and placental weight. A striking downward and forward positioning of the head was present in the MeHg-treated fetuses with the CP group more severely affected than the NCP group. Significant differences between the three groups (control, NCP, and CP) were present with mean head-to-body angles of 67 degrees, 60 degrees and 51 degrees, respectively. The absence of normal head lifting resulted in a relative mandibular retrognathia that when combined with a decrease in mandibular length produced alterations in spatial relations that were most severe in the CP fetuses. The results suggest that after exposure to MeHg, palatal closure is affected by altered tongue posture associated with the abnormal head positioning and shortening of the mandible that develop following placental and embryonic growth retardation.  相似文献
