A combination of routine methods of bacteriological analysis has been utilised to investigate conditions in a river system which in part is subject to the effects of the discharge of appreciable quantities of sewage effluents which, during the dry season, may constitute the major part of the total flow. Other parts of the river system are free from gross pollution, and results obtained from these sections served as a basis for comparison. The river system is capable of coping with most of the detrimental effects of direct faecal pollution in varying form. But under no circumstances do these findings imply that the river system is capable of dealing with unrestricted quantities of sewage effluents for an unlimited period of time. Industrial pollution of varying character has been found to have little, if any, effect on bacterial numbers. The effect these effluents may have on the composition of the bacterial population as a whole has not been investigated, but this influence would be of local significance only. The methods used and the interpretations applied to the results seem to constitute a valuable instrument in the detailed study and assessment of bacteriological quality of the waters in a natural river system which is subject to severe pollution from sewage and industrial effluents of varying character.  相似文献

In fissured aquifers, hydrodynamic phenomena combined with a network of permeable fissures imparts varying degrees of vulnerability depending on the type of contaminant. The study presented here examines the impact on a karst aquifer of a river which receives effluents from a sewage treatment plant just upstream from the point of recharge. This recharge constitutes a source of bacteriological and chemical pollution. The aquifer is accessible by boreholes at discrete points, facilitating investigation of the evolution of three of the contaminants characteristic of treatment station effluents, NH4+ and two biological contaminants with different survival capacities. The study was undertaken both under normal climatic conditions and during a flood occurring after a long dry period. The rate of infiltration, of subsurface transport, and of dissemination of contaminants into a zone usually protected from contamination was recorded. The results confirm the vulnerability of fissured aquifers to contamination.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the incidence of fecal coliforms, fecal streptococci, Aeromonas hydrophilia, and Salmonella spp. in the waste discharges of seven sewage treatment plants, four fruit and vegetable canneries, a meat packing plant, a poultry processing plant, and a potato processing plant located along the Cornwallis River in Nova Scotia, Canada. Surface water samples were also collected from 13 locations in the river to assess the impact of these waste discharges on the receiving water quality. The results showed that the final effluents from most of the sewage treatment and processing plants were of very poor bacteriological quality, with the number of indicator bacteria comparable with those found in raw sewage. Salmonellae were isolated from the effluents of the meat and poultry plants and five of the seven sewage treatment plants surveyed. No salmonellae were detected in the effluents of the fruit and vegetable canneries. The impact of the discharge of untreated municipal and food processing wastes on the Cornwallis River water quality was evidenced by the recovery from river water of five Salmonella serotypes, and the high fecal coliform counts which exceeded recommended limit for bathing and shellfish harvesting.  相似文献

AIMS: A rural sewage treatment plant and the effect of its effluent on the enterococci and faecal coliforms populations of the receiving river waters was evaluated. METHODS AND RESULTS: The enumeration of bacteria was performed by membrane filtration. Diversity and population similarity were analysed using the PhP-plates system. The treatment plant reduces the number of enterococci and faecal coliforms to values similar to those observed upstream. All water samples showed a high diversity for both bacterial populations. A high similarity in the composition and structure, was detected among all the samples. CONCLUSIONS: The impact of the disposal of treated sewage on the river did not modify the composition of either bacterial populations in the river water. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMAPCT OF THE STUDY: The biochemical phenotyping of bacterial populations is a reliable tool for ecological and biodiversity studies. The obtained results provide a better understanding of the sewage treatment process and the impact of the treated sewage effluents in the environment.  相似文献

The effect of releasing untreated sewage from Victoria Falls Town into the Zambezi river was determined by bacteriological examination of water samples collected upstream of Victoria Falls and for 22 km downstream. Most probable numbers of faecal coliforms and Escherichia coli were estimated. Water upstream of the falls, on the Zimbabwe side of the river, contained between seven and 130 E. coli per 100 ml. This section of the river was free from major sources of faecal pollution. Below the falls, but before the Victoria Falls Town sewage outfall, numbers of E. coli were between 1.8 X 10(2) and 1.4 X 10(4)/100 ml, indicating the existence of a sewage discharge other than that from Victoria Falls Town. The river was also highly polluted from the Victoria Falls Town sewage outfall to a point 18.6 km downstream. The highest E. coli count was 3.3 X 10(4)/100 ml and declined slowly to 1.4 X 10(3)/100 ml 18.6 km downstream of the outfall.  相似文献

A simple apparatus was developed to allow 12 petri plates to be poured simultaneously by hand. It was used when screening bacterial isolates from sewage and dog feces for their ability to detect phages from these sources. This was done to assess the ease with which source-specific phage hosts can be isolated from these sources of fecal pollution. Host bacteria that consistently detected phages from sewage were easily isolated from sewage. These bacterial isolates did not detect phages from dog feces.
