ABSTRACT

In this work, with Ni (110) as a model catalyst surface and CO2 as an adsorbate, a performance study of Density Functional Theory methods (functionals) is performed. CO being a possible intermediate in CO2 conversion reactions, binding energies of both, CO2 and CO, are calculated on the Ni surface and are compared with experimental data. OptPBE-vdW functional correctly predicts CO2 binding energy on Ni (?62?kJ/mol), whereas CO binding energy is correctly predicted by the rPBE-vdW functional (?138?kJ/mol). The difference in computed adsorption energies by different functionals is attributed to the calculation of gas phase CO2. Three alternate reaction systems based on a different number of C=O double bonds present in the gas phase molecule are considered to replace CO2. The error in computed adsorption energy is directly proportional to the number of C=O double bonds present in the gas phase molecule. Additionally, both functionals predict similar carbon–oxygen activation barrier (40?kJ/mol) and equivalent C1s shifts for probe species (?2.6?eV for CCH3 and +1.5?eV CO3?), with respect to adsorbed CO2. Thus, by including a correction factor of 28?kJ/mol for the computed CO2 gas phase energy, we suggest using rPBE-vdW functional to investigate CO2 conversion reactions on different metals.  相似文献

The adsorption processes of elemental lead on carbonaceous surfaces which adsorbed CO/CO2/NO flue gases were investigated to understand the effects of CO/CO2/NO on elemental lead adsorption on carbonaceous surfaces with density functional theory. All calculations including optimizations, energies, and frequencies were conducted at B3PW91 density functional theory level, utilizing SDD basis set for lead and 6-31G(d) Pople basis set for other atoms. The results indicate that CO, CO2, and NO can promote the adsorption of elemental lead on the carbonaceous surface, but probably compete for adsorption sites with elemental lead. The promotion effects on adsorption can be attributed to active sites on the carbonaceous surface rather than flue gas adsorption on the carbonaceous surface. In addition, the adsorption order of three kinds of flue gas on the carbonaceous surface is CO2?>?NO?>?CO?>?Pb on average. Furthermore, the enhancement order of three kinds of flue gas on the elemental lead adsorption on carbonaceous surfaces is CO-CS?>?CO2-CS?>?NO-CS?>?CS in general. In particular, atomic charge and adsorption energy have good linear relationship in the process of elemental lead adsorption.

A new matrix, polymeric 1,3-diaminobenzene-coated Celite, which selectively adsorbs monomeric and polymeric carbohydrates, has been prepared. This matrix adsorbs glycogen and other branched polysaccharides, as opposed to neutral or charged monosaccharides. Other solid supports were coated with polymeric 1,3-diaminobenzene; some of these (coated Sephadex G10 and coated Bioglas 1,000) had better physical form for column packing. Coated Celite was considered to be the best support in view of its greater stability. The effects of ionic concentration, pH, temperature, and the concentration of carbohydrate solution on the adsorption of glycogen on to coated Celite were studied, and methods to prevent adsorption and remove adsorbed carbohydrate were investigated. A comparison is made with the adsorption of heterocyclic compounds by cross-linked dextran gels.  相似文献

Degradation of poliovirus by adsorption on inorganic surfaces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Alteration of the specific infectivity of 3H-labeled ribonucleic acid and 14C-protein labeled poliovirus type 1 by adsorption on inorganic surfaces is investigated by application of kinetic theory to data obtained from sequential extractions of adsorbed virus. Some surfaces, e.g., SiO2, appear to have no significant effect. On the other hand, CuO substantially decreases the specific infectivity of adsorbed preparations. Differences in kinetic plots between 3H-labeled ribonucleic acid and 14C-labeled protein suggest that the inactivation observed involves physical disruption of virions. Van der Waals interactions between solid surfaces and virus are suspected to induce spontaneous virion disassembly. Surface catalyzed disassembly in aquatic and soil environments is implicated as an important mechanism controlling enterovirus dissemination. Methods developed here to evaluate complete recovery of adsorbed virus have potenital application to other degradation studied and problems concerning virus recovery from adsorbents used in virus concentrators.  相似文献

The adsorption of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans to coal surfaces has been studied. Adsorption experiments were conducted on coal samples from eight different Eastern coal fields. In all cases the adsorption process was at least 90% complete within the first two minutes following inoculation. The results of these experiments were used to test the validity of two proposed adsorption models. The first model assumes that bacterial adsorption follows second-order irreversible kinetics of the second kind with respect to the concentration of bacteria and substratum surface area in the system. The second model allows for the contribution of reversible adsorption detected in desorption experiments. It was found that the combined reversible-irreversible model more accurately describes the initial stages of adsorption. Rate constants in both models were calculated for each coal sample. The relation of each of these constants to the pyrite concentration in coal is presented and the significance of these relations is discussed.Scanning electron micrographs of inoculated coal samples sho that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans selectively adsorb to exposed pyrite phases dispersed throughout the organic coal matrix. Preferential attachment was also observed along topographical faults in the caol surface. Mercury contact angle measurements on coal indicate that the selective adsorption of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans may be attributable to the lower surface free energy of pyrite relative to the organic coal matrix.  相似文献

Summary The adsorption of Sulfolobus acidocaldarius on bituminous coal surfaces and the respiration rate during adsorption at 70° C were enhanced at pH 1.0–2.0, in comparison with those at pH 3.0–5.0. The maximum number of bacterial cells adsorbed per unit area of coal attained a maximum (1.4 × 1011 cells/m2) at pH 2.0. The rate of desulphurization at pH 2.2–2.5 was higher than at other pHs tested. Micrographs of S. acidocaldarius obtained by TEM and SEM indicated that the cells were adsorbed to the coal surfaces by extracellular slime. Specific inhibitors of membrane-bound ATPase (NaF, 20 mm) and respiration (NaN3, 1 mm; KCN, 1 mm) had pronounced effects on suppressing adsorption. The amount of S. acidocaldarius adsorbed decreased when the coal particles were leached in advance with 2.0 m HNO3. These facts lead to the conclusion that the adsorption of S. acidocaldarius on coal surfaces requires physiological activity relatd to respiration or energy conversion. Offprint requests to: V. B. Fossils show that coniferous forests extended into polar regions during the Mesozoic, a time when models and independent paleo-CO2 indicators suggest that the atmospheric CO2 concentration was at least double that of the present day. Consequently, such polar forests would have experienced high CO2 interacting with an extreme variation in light. Here we describe an experiment investigating this plant-environment interaction for extant tree species that were important components of polar forests, and give results from the first year of treatment. Specifically, we tested the hypotheses that growth in elevated CO2 (1) stimulates photosynthesis; (2) reduces photoinhibition during the polar summer; and (3) reduces respiration of above- and below-ground plant organs. Our results indicate that CO2 fertilization generally does not affect photosynthesis under continuous daylight characteristic of the polar summer but does increase it when the period of illumination is shorter. Growth in elevated CO2 did not alter the potential for photoinhibition. CO2 enrichment significantly reduced leaf and root respiration rates by 50 and 25 %, respectively, in a range of evergreen taxa. Incorporating these observed CO2 effects into numerical simulations using a process-based model of coniferous forest growth indicates that a high paleo-CO2 concentration would have increased the productivity of Cretaceous conifer forests in northern Alaska. This results from decreased respiratory costs that more than compensate for the absence of high CO2-high temperature interactions during the polar summer. The longer-term effects of CO2 enrichment on seasonal changes in the above- and below-ground carbon balance of trees are discussed.  相似文献

The phenomenon of protein adsorption to solid surfaces affects the performance of many materials and processes, in areas ranging from medicine to biochemical engineering. Controlling protein adsorption, from solutions of single proteins as well as from more complex mixtures, requires an understanding of the mechanism(s) by which it occurs. This, in turn, entails detailed characterization of both the protein and the solid surface and identification of those factors controlling the adsorption process.  相似文献

The ability of microorganisms to `recognise' a change in the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity balance of the surface was demonstrated using thermoresponsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) co-polymers with different Lower Critical Solution Temperatures. The polymers were grafted onto hydrolysed glass under well controlled conditions and the adhesion was followed using 13C-labelled Listeria monocytogenes. Attachment of the bacteria was found to be directly affected by the polymer transition from a hydrophilic to a hydrophobic state but by less than one order of magnitude.  相似文献

Adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and fibrinogen (Fg) was measured on six distinct bare and dextran- and hyaluronate-modified silicon surfaces created using two dextran grafting densities and three hyaluronic acid (HA) sodium salts derived from human umbilical cord, rooster comb and Streptococcus zooepidemicus. Film thickness and surface morphology depended on the HA molecular weight and concentration. BSA coverage was enhanced on surfaces in competitive adsorption of BSA:Fg mixtures. Dextranization differentially reduced protein adsorption onto surfaces based on oxidation state. Hyaluronization was demonstrated to provide the greatest resistance to protein coverage, equivalent to that of the most resistant dextranized surface. Resistance to protein adsorption was independent of the type of HA utilized. With changing bulk protein concentration from 20 to 40 μg ml(-1) for each species, Fg coverage on silicon increased by 4x, whereas both BSA and Fg adsorption on dextran and HA were far less dependent on protein bulk concentration.  相似文献

The physical specificity of adsorption of porcine pancreatic carboxylester lipase to mixed-lipid surfaces was examined by using films at the argon-buffer interface. They were comprised of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylphosphatidylcholine and triolein, 1,3-diolein, methyl oleate, oleonitrile, oleyl alcohol, or 13,16-docosadienoic acid. Under conditions where the surfaces are thermodynamically well-defined, each of these binary systems exhibits the formation of a lipid-lipid complex that is completely miscible with uncomplexed non-phospholipid [Smaby, J. M., & Brockman, H. L. (1985) Biophys. J. 48, 701-707]. Initial rates of adsorption of enzyme to the complexes were less than or equal to 5% of those measured in the absence of phospholipid and comparable to its rate of adsorption to phospholipid alone. This occurred despite there being up to 46% of the surface area occupied by non-phospholipid in the complexes. Equilibrium binding measurements were made at a composition where phospholipid-fatty acid complex was the predominant species. These showed that the low rates were due to an absence of adsorption sites relative to surfaces of fatty acid alone. With diolein or fatty acid and phospholipid, equilibrium binding was also measured at compositions intermediate between that of the complex and pure non-phospholipid. In both systems surface concentrations of enzyme varied nonideally with respect to either the mole fraction or area fraction of complex and uncomplexed diolein or fatty acid in the film. At area fractions of uncomplexed lipid of 0.35 and 0.67, dissociation constants for enzyme adsorption were increased 10-20-fold relative to pure fatty acid or diolein.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The adsorption of nitrogen-containing compounds (NCCs) including 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), and 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO) on kaolinite surfaces was investigated. The M06-2X and M06-2X-D3 density functionals were applied with the cluster approximation. Several different positions of NCCs relative to the adsorption sites of kaolinite were examined, including NCCs in perpendicular and parallel orientation toward both surface models of kaolinite. The binding between the target molecules and kaolinite surfaces was analyzed and bond energies were calculated applying the atoms in molecules (AIM) method. All NCCs were found to prefer a parallel orientation toward both kaolinite surfaces, and were bound more strongly to the octahedral than to the tetrahedral site. TNT exhibited the strongest interaction with the octahedral surface and DNAN with the tetrahedral surface of kaolinite. Hydrogen bonding was shown to be the dominant non-covalent interaction for NCCs interacting with the octahedral surface of kaolinite with a small stabilizing effect of dispersion interactions. In the case of adsorption on the tetrahedral surface, kaolonite–NCC binding was shown to be governed by the balance between hydrogen bonds and dispersion forces. The presence of water as a solvent leads to a significant decrease in the adsorption strength for all studied NCCs interacting with both kaolinite surfaces.  相似文献

Antarctic fishes synthesise antifreeze proteins which can effectively inhibit the growth of ice crystals. The mechanism relies on adsorption of these proteins to the ice surface. Ellipsometry has been used to quantify glycopeptide antifreeze adsorption to the basal and prism faces of single ice crystals. The rate of accumulation was determined as a function of time and at concentrations between 0.0005 and 1.2 mg/ml. Estimates of packing density at saturation coverage have been made for the basal and prism faces.  相似文献

Oriented adsorption of purple membrane to cationic surfaces   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:4       下载免费PDF全文
We have investigated the orientation of isolated fragments of Halobacterium halobium purple membrane (PM) adsorbed to poly-L-lysine- treated glass (PL-glass), by quanitative electron microscopy. Three lines of evidence support the conclusion that the cytoplasmic side of the membrane is preferentially absorbed. First, monolayer freeze- fracture reveals nonrandom orientation; more fracture faces (89%) are particulate than smooth. Second, the amount of each membrane surface present can be assayed using polycationic ferritin; 90% of all adsorbed membrane fragments are labeled. Third, it is possible to distinguish two surfaces, "cracked" (the extracellular surface) and "pitted" (the cytoplasmic surface) , in slowly air-dried, platinum-carbon-shadowed membranes. When applied under standard conditions, more than 80% appear cracked. Selection for the cytoplasmic by the cationic substrate suggests that the isolated PM, buffered at pH 7.4 and in the light, has a higher negative charge on its cytoplasmic surface than on its extracellular surface. Nevertheless, cationic ferritin (CF) preferentially adsorbs to the extracellular surface. Orientation provides a striking example of biomembrane surface asymmetry as well as the means to examine the chemical reactivity and physical properties of surfaces of a purified, nonvesicular membrane fragment.  相似文献

The kinetics of protein adsorption are studied using a generalized diffusion approach which shows that the time-determining step in the adsorption is the crossing of the kinetic barrier presented by the polymers and already adsorbed proteins. The potential of mean-force between the adsorbing protein and the polymer-protein surface changes as a function of time due to the deformation of the polymer layers as the proteins adsorb. Furthermore, the range and strength of the repulsive interaction felt by the approaching proteins increases with grafted polymer molecular weight and surface coverage. The effect of molecular weight on the kinetics is very complex and different than its role on the equilibrium adsorption isotherms. The very large kinetic barriers make the timescale for the adsorption process very long and the computational effort increases with time, thus, an approximate kinetic approach is developed. The kinetic theory is based on the knowledge that the time-determining step is crossing the potential-of-mean-force barrier. Kinetic equations for two states (adsorbed and bulk) are written where the kinetic coefficients are the product of the Boltzmann factor for the free energy of adsorption (desorption) multiplied by a preexponential factor determined from a Kramers-like theory. The predictions from the kinetic approach are in excellent quantitative agreement with the full diffusion equation solutions demonstrating that the two most important physical processes are the crossing of the barrier and the changes in the barrier with time due to the deformation of the polymer layer as the proteins adsorb/desorb. The kinetic coefficients can be calculated a priori allowing for systematic calculations over very long timescales. It is found that, in many cases where the equilibrium adsorption shows a finite value, the kinetics of the process is so slow that the experimental system will show no adsorption. This effect is particularly important at high grafted polymer surface coverage. The construction of guidelines for molecular weight/surface coverage necessary for kinetic prevention of protein adsorption in a desired timescale is shown. The time-dependent desorption is also studied by modeling how adsorbed proteins leave the surface when in contact with a pure water solution. It is found that the kinetics of desorption are very slow and depend in a nonmonotonic way in the polymer chain length. When the polymer layer thickness is shorter than the size of the protein, increasing polymer chain length, at fixed surface coverage, makes the desorption process faster. For polymer layers with thickness larger than the protein size, increases in molecular weight results in a longer time for desorption. This is due to the grafted polymers trapping the adsorbed proteins and slowing down the desorption process. These results offer a possible explanation to some experimental data on adsorption. Limitations and extension of the developed approaches for practical applications are discussed.  相似文献
