This study aimed to determine the characteristics of the in vivo behaviour of human muscle architecture during a pre-motion silent period (PMSP) using ultrasonography. Subjects were requested to perform rapid knee extension with vertical jumping. Electromyographic signals were recorded from the vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis, and biceps femoris muscles. Ultrasonic images were recorded from the VL. We found that the cross point between the fascicle and deep aponeurosis in the VL moved to the distal side before the rapid vertical jumps with PMSP. This cross point movement with PMSP was of low amplitude (mean: 1.0 ± 0.3 mm) and velocity (22.2 ± 6.1 mm/s). The amplitude and velocity of the cross point movement were significantly positively related to the angular peak velocity of knee extensor during rapid vertical jumping in trials with PMSP. These results suggest that although low levels of pre-movement muscle architectural change with PMSP may be the result of muscle relaxation behaviour rather than the result of muscle stretching behaviour, this pre-movement effect can influence subsequent muscular performance during a rapid voluntary movement. PMSP may allow pre-movement muscle architectural change to generate a better muscular condition to increase neural activation during the subsequent rapid voluntary contraction.  相似文献

Lumbar vertebrae are complicated in structure and function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the in-vivo motion characteristics of different portions of the lumbar vertebrae during functional activities. Motion of L2, L3 and L4 was reproduced using a combined dual fluoroscopic and MR imaging technique during flexion–extension and left–right twisting of the trunk. The ranges of motion (ROM) of the proximal vertebra with respect to the distal one at 3 representative locations: the center of the vertebral body, the center of the spinal canal and the tip of the spinous process were measured. Centers of rotation (COR) of the vertebrae were then determined by calculation of the points of zero motion in 2D sagittal and transverse planes. During flexion–extension, the center of the vertebral body moved less than 0.6 mm, while the tip of the spinous process moved less than 7.5 mm in the sagittal plane. The CORs of both L23 (L2 with respect to L3) and L34 were located inside the vertebral body, at a distance about one-third the length of the vertebral body from the posterior edge. During left–right twisting, the center of the vertebral body moved less than 1.0 mm, while the tip of the spinous process moved less than 1.6 mm in the transverse plane. The CORs of both L23 and L34 were located approximately 30 mm anterior to the front edge of the vertebral body. The results of this study may be used to define the ideal locations for surgical placement of the disc prosthesis, thus help improve the prosthesis design and surgical treatment of various pathological conditions.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to quantify the load on the lumbar spine of subjects when they are asked to adjust from a slouched sitting posture into an upright posture with one of three different strategies: “free” (no instruction) and two coached patterns: “lumbopelvic” dominant and “thoracic” dominant. The activity of selected muscles and kinematic data was recorded from 20 volunteers while performing the three movement patterns to adjust sitting posture. Moments and forces at the lumbar spine were computed from an anatomically detailed model that uses kinematics and muscle activation as input variables. The lumbopelvic pattern produces less joint moment on the lumbar spine (on average 31.2 ± 3.9 N m) when compared to the thoracic pattern (43.8 ± 5.8 N m). However, the joint compression force was similar for these two patterns, but it was smaller in the free pattern, when no coaching was given (lumbopelvic: 1279 ± 112 N, thoracic: 1367 ± (125 N, free: 1181 ± 118 N). Lower thoracic erector muscle activity and higher lumbar erector activity were measured in the lumbopelvic pattern in comparison with the other two. In summary the lumbopelvic pattern strategy using predominantly the movement of anterior pelvic tilt results in smaller joint moments on the lumbar spine and also positions the lumbar spine closest to the neutral posture minimizing passive tissue stress. This may be the strategy of choice for people with low back flexion intolerance.  相似文献

IntroductionWe aimed to determine whether the changes in muscle activity (in terms of both gross electromyography (EMG) and motor unit (MU) discharge characteristics) observed during pain are spatially organized with respect to pain location within a muscle which is the main contributor of the task.MethodsSurface and fine-wire EMG was recorded during matched low-force isometric plantarflexion from soleus (from four quadrants with fine-wire EMG and from the medial/lateral sides with surface EMG), both gastrocnemii heads, peroneus longus, and tibialis anterior. Four conditions were tested: two control conditions that each preceded contractions with pain induced in either the lateral (PainL) or medial (PainM) side of soleus.ResultsNeither the presence (p = 0.28) nor location (p = 0.19) of pain significantly altered gross muscle activity of any location (lateral/medial side of soleus, gastrocnemii, peroneus longus and tibialis anterior). Group data from 196 MUs show redistribution of MU activity throughout the four quadrants of soleus, irrespective of pain location. The significant decrease of MU discharge rate during pain (p < 0.0001; PainL: 7.3 ± 0.9–6.9 ± 1.1 Hz, PainM: 7.0 ± 1.1 to 6.6 ± 1.1 Hz) was similar for all quadrants of the soleus (p = 0.43), regardless of the pain location (p = 0.98). There was large inter-participant variation in respect to the characteristics of the altered MU discharge with pain.ConclusionResults from both surface and fine-wire EMG recordings do not support the hypothesis that muscle activity is reorganized in a simple systematic manner with respect to pain location.  相似文献

Proprioceptive feedback is thought to play a significant role in controlling both lumbopelvic and intervertebral orientations. In the lumbar spine, a vertebra's positional history along the dorsal-ventral axis has been shown to alter the position, movement, and velocity sensitivity of muscle spindles in the multifidus and longissimus muscles. These effects appear due to muscle history. Because spinal motion segments have up to 6 degrees of freedom for movement, we were interested in whether the axis along which the history is applied differentially affects paraspinal muscle spindles. We tested the null hypothesis that the loading axis, which creates a vertebra's positional history, has no effect on a lumbar muscle spindle's subsequent response to vertebral position or movement. Identical displacements were applied along three orthogonal axes directly at the L(6) spinous process using a feedback motor system under displacement control. Single-unit nerve activity was recorded from 60 muscle spindle afferents in teased filaments from L(6) dorsal rootlets innervating intact longissimus or multifidus muscles of deeply anesthetized cats. Muscle lengthening histories along the caudal-cranial and dorsal-ventral axis, compared with the left-right axis, produced significantly greater reductions in spindle responses to vertebral position and movement. The spinal anatomy suggested that the effect of a lengthening history is greatest when that history had occurred along an axis lying within the anatomical plane of the facet joint. Speculation is made that the interaction between normal spinal mechanics and the inherent thixotropic property of muscle spindles poses a challenge for feedback and feedforward motor control of the lumbar spine.  相似文献

The study aimed to map instantaneous centers of rotation (ICRs) of lumbar motion segments during a functional lifting task and examine differences across segments and variations caused by magnitude of weight lifted. Eleven healthy participants lifted loads of three different magnitudes (4.5, 9, and 13.5 kg) from a trunk-flexed (~75°) to an upright position, while being imaged by a dynamic stereo X-ray (DSX) system. Tracked lumbar vertebral (L2-S1) motion data were processed into highly accurate 6DOF intervertebral (L2L3, L3L4, L4L5, L5S1) kinematics. ICRs were computed using the finite helical axis method. Effects of segment level and load magnitude on the anterior-posterior (AP) and superior-inferior (SI) ICR migration ranges were assessed with a mixed-effects model. Further, ICRs were averaged to a single center of rotation (COR) to assess segment-specific differences in COR AP- and SI-coordinates. The AP range was found to be significantly larger for L2L3 compared to L3L4 (p=0.02), L4L5 and L5S1 (p<0.001). Average ICR SI location was relatively higher – near the superior endplate of the inferior vertebra – for L4L5 and L5SI compared to L2L3 and L3L4 (p≤0.001) – located between the mid-transverse plane and superior endplate of the inferior vertebra – but differences were not significant amongst themselves (p>0.9). Load magnitude had a significant effect only on the SI component of ICR migration range (13.5 kg>9 kg and 4.5 kg; p=0.049 and 0.017 respectively). The reported segment-specific ICR data exemplify improved input parameters for lumbar spine biomechanical models and design of disc replacements, and base-line references for potential diagnostic applications.  相似文献

Voluntary moderate deep inspiration breath hold (vmDIBH) in left-sided breast cancer radiotherapy reduces cardiac dose. The aim of this study was to investigate heart position variability in vmDIBH using CBCT and to compare this variability with differences in heart position between vmDIBH and free breathing (FB).For 50 patients initial heart position with respect to the field edge (HP-FE) was measured on a vmDIBH planning CT scan. Breath-hold was monitored using an in-house developed vertical plastic stick. On pre-treatment CBCT scans, heart position variability with respect to the field edge (ΔHP-FE) was measured, reflecting heart position variability when using an offline correction protocol. After registering the CBCT scan to the planning CT, heart position variability with respect to the chest wall (ΔHP-CW) was measured, reflecting heart position variability when using an online correction protocol. As a control group, vmDIBH and FB computed tomography (CT) scans were acquired for 30 patients and registering both scans on the chest wall. For 34 out of 50 patients, the average HP-FE and HP-CW increased over the treatment course in comparison to the planning CT. Averaged over all patients and all treatment fractions, the ΔHP-FE and the ΔHP-CW was 0.8 ± 4.2 mm (range −9.4–+10.6 mm) and 1.0 ± 4.4 mm (range −8.3–+10.4 mm) respectively. The average gain in heart to chest wall distance was 11.8 ± 4.6 mm when using vmDIBH instead of FB. In conclusion, substantial variability in heart position using vmDIBH was observed during the treatment course.  相似文献

Flexion relaxation (FR) is characterized by the lumbar erector spinae (LES) becoming myoelectrically silent near full trunk flexion. This study was designed to: (1) determine if decreasing the lumbar moment during flexion would induce FR to occur earlier; (2) characterize thoracic and abdominal muscle activity during FR. Ten male participants performed four trunk flexion/extension movement conditions; lumbar moment was altered by attaching 0, 5, 10, or 15 lb counterweights to the torso. Electromyography (EMG) was recorded from eight trunk muscles. Lumbar moment, lumbar flexion and trunk inclination angles were calculated at the critical point of LES inactivation (CPLES). Results demonstrated that counterweights decreased the lumbar moment and lumbar flexion angle at CPLES (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0029, respectively); the hypothesis that FR occurs earlier when lumbar moment is reduced was accepted. The counterweights did not alter trunk inclination at CPLES (p = 0.1987); this is believed to result from an altered hip to spine flexion ratio when counterweights were attached. Lumbar multifidus demonstrated FR, similar to LES, while thoracic muscles remained active throughout flexion. Abdominal muscles activated at the same instant as CPLES, except in the 15 lb condition where abdominal muscles activated before CPLES resulting in a period of increased co-contraction.  相似文献

The aim of the current study was to analyze the activation characteristics and potential compartmentalization of the latissimus dorsi (LD) muscle during common maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs) and functional dynamic tasks. Surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to measure activation magnitudes from four electrode sites (referenced to the T10, T12, L1 & L4 LD vertebral origins) across the fanning muscle belly of the LD. In addition, EMG waveforms were cross-correlated to study temporal activation timing between electrode sites (T10-T12, T12-L1, L1-L4 & T10-L4). The MVICs that were tested included a humeral adduction, humeral adduction with internal rotation, a chest-supported row and a humeral extension. Dynamic movements included sagittal lift/lowers from the floor to knee, knee to hip and hip to shoulder. No magnitude-based (p = 0.6116) or temporal-based differences were observed between electrode sites during the MVIC trials. During dynamic movements no temporal-based, but some magnitude-based differences between electrode sites were observed to be present; these differences were small in magnitude and were observed for both the maximum (p = 0.0002) and mean (p = 0.0002) EMG magnitudes. No clear pattern of compartmentalization was uncovered in the contractions studied here. In addition to these findings, it was determined that the most effective MVIC technique for LD EMG normalization purposes was a chest-supported row MVIC, paired with a T12 electrode site.  相似文献

We aimed to examine whether the influence of conditioning contraction intensity on the extent of postactivation potentiation (PAP) is muscle dependent. Eleven healthy males performed both thumb adduction and plantar flexion as a conditioning contraction. The conditioning contraction intensities were set at 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, or 100% of the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC).Before and after the conditioning contraction, twitch torque was measured for the respective joint to calculate the extent of PAP. In plantar flexion, the extent of PAP became significantly larger as the conditioning contraction intensity increased up to 80% MVC (p < 0.05). In contrast, the extent of PAP in thumb adduction increased significantly only up to 60% MVC (p < 0.05), but not at higher intensities. These results indicate that the influence of the conditioning contraction intensity on the extent of PAP is muscle dependent. Our results suggest that a conditioning contraction with submaximal intensity can sufficiently evoke sizable PAP in the muscle where most of muscle fibers are recruited at submaximal intensities, thereby attenuating muscle fatigue induced by the conditioning contraction.  相似文献

The use of a tilt platform to simulate a lateral ankle sprain and record muscle reaction time is a well-established procedure. However, a potential caveat is that repetitive ankle perturbation may cause a natural attenuation of the reflex latency and amplitude. This is an important area to investigate as many researchers examine the effect of an intervention on muscle reaction time. Muscle reaction time, peak and average amplitude of the peroneus longus and tibialis anterior in response to a simulated lateral ankle sprain (combined inversion and plantar flexion movement) were calculated in twenty-two physically active participants. The 40 perturbations were divided into 4 even groups of 10 dominant limb perturbations. Within-participants repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) tests were conducted to assess the effect of habituation over time for each variable. There was a significant reduction in the peroneus longus average amplitude between the aggregated first and last 10 consecutive ankle perturbations (F2.15,45.09 = 3.90, P = 0.03, ɳp2 = 0.16). Authors should implement no more than a maximum of 30 consecutive ankle perturbations (inclusive of practice perturbations) in future protocols simulating a lateral ankle sprain in an effort to avoid significant attenuation of muscle activity.  相似文献

Tensiomyography is a non-invasive method of neuromuscular assessment used to measure muscle action characteristics, muscle tone, and muscle fiber type, and provides information on acute and chronic responses of muscle to different training loads. The aims of the present study were: to analyse differences in muscle response and mechanical characteristics of two major muscles of the lower extremity in a large group of Spanish soccer players according to playing position, and to provide group norms against which clinical findings may be compared. Data were collected from 78 professional soccer players (age 26.6 ± 4.4 years; height: 179.2 ± 5.3 cm; body mass: 75.8 ± 5.3 kg). Tensiomyography was recorded from the rectus femoris (RF) and biceps femoris (BF) muscles after 2 days without take part in any strenuous exercise or training. Five tensiomyographic parameters were analyzed: maximal displacement (Dm), contraction time (Tc), sustain time (Ts), delay time (Td), and half-relaxation time (Tr). A good to excellent intra-session reliability was found for all contractile parameters (ICC ranged from 0.78 to 0.95). No significant differences between players of any position were observed in absolute values of BF. However, significant differences were observed for Tc, Tr and Ts between the different playing positions on RF (P < 0.05, effect size ranged from 1.3 to 1.6). Professional soccer players showed muscles with ability to rapidly generate force during contractions. The neuromuscular profile provided could help in identifying the normative data that are important for the different positions in order to optimize the training and recovery process of each individual player.  相似文献

The validity of the Sorensen test as a measure for back muscle endurance is controversial due to a possible impact of hip extensor muscles. The aim of this study was to investigate the criterion validity of an alternative test (Ito test) compared to the Sorensen test. Both procedures were performed by 29 healthy subjects (11 women) for 5 s and until exhaustion (randomized order). EMG activity was measured from 3 lumbar back and 3 hip extensor muscles. Muscular involvement in test positions was calculated as percentage of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Muscle fatigue was determined by the normalized regression coefficient of the median frequencies of the EMG power spectrum (NMFslope). Prediction of holding time by NMFslope values was investigated using regression analysis. In the test positions, the hamstring muscles were activated to a higher MVC percentage in the Sorensen than in the Ito test, while the iliocostalis muscle was less activated. Similarly, the iliocostalis (p = 0.006) and the multifidi muscles (p = 0.03) significantly contributed to predict holding time in the Ito test, whereas the multifidi muscles (p = 0.001) and the semitendinosus muscle (p = 0.046) did so in the Sorensen test. The results of this study indicate that the Ito test might present a valuable alternative for testing back muscle endurance in LBP patients.  相似文献

Aerobic granulation is a process in which suspended biomass aggregate and form discrete well-defined granules in aerobic systems. To investigate the properties and kinetics of aerobic granular sludge, aerobic granules were cultivated with glucose synthetic wastewater in a series of sequencing batch reactors (SBR). The spherical shaped granules were observed on 8th day with the mean diameter of 0.1 mm. With the organic loading rate (OLR) being increased to 4.0 g COD L−1 d−1, aerobic granules grew matured with spherical shape. The size of granules ranged from 1.2 to 1.8 mm, and the corresponding settling velocity of individual granule was 24.2–36.4 m h−1. The oxygen utilization rate (OUR) of mature granules was 41.90 g O2 kg MLSS−1 h−1, which was two times higher than that of activated sludge (18.32 g O2 kg MLSS−1 h−1). The experimental data indicated that the substrate utilization and biomass growth kinetics generally followed Monod's kinetics model. The corresponding kinetic coefficients of k (maximum specific substrate utilization rate), Ks (half velocity coefficient), Y (growth yield coefficient) and Kd (decay coefficient) were determined as follows, kc = 23.65 d−1, Kc = 3367.05 mg L−1, KN = 0.038 d−1, KN = 29.65 mg L−1, Y = 0.1927–0.2022 mg MMLS (mg COD)−1 and Kd = 0.00845–0.0135 d−1, respectively. Those properties of aerobic granules made aerobic granules system had a short setup period, high substrate utilization rate and low sludge production.  相似文献

A coordinated activation of distal forearm muscles allows the hand and fingers to be shaped during movement and grasp. However, little is known about how the muscle activation patterns are reflected in multi-channel mechanomyogram (MMG) signals. The purpose of this study is to determine if multi-site MMG signals exhibit distinctive patterns of forearm muscle activity. MMG signals were recorded from forearm muscle sites of nine able-bodied participants during hand movement. By using 14 features selected by a genetic algorithm and classified by a linear discriminant analysis classifier (LDA), we show that MMG patterns are specific and consistent enough to identify 7 ± 1 hand movements with an accuracy of 90 ± 4%. MMG-based movement recognition required a minimum of three recording sites. Further, by classifying five classes of contraction patterns with 98 ± 3% accuracy from MMG signals recorded from the residual limb of an amputee participant, we demonstrate that MMG shows pattern-specificity even in the absence of typical musculature. Multi-site monitoring of the RMS of MMG signals is suggested as a method of estimating the relative contributions of muscles to motor tasks. The patterns in MMG facilitate our understanding of the mechanical activity of muscles during movement.  相似文献

The combined loss of muscle strength and constant fatigue are disabling symptoms for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Doxorubicin, a standard chemotherapy drug used in the clinic, causes skeletal muscle dysfunction and premature fatigue along with an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS). As mitochondria represent a primary source of oxidant generation in muscle, we hypothesized that doxorubicin could negatively affect mitochondria by inhibiting respiratory capacity, leading to an increase in H2O2-emitting potential. Here we demonstrate a biphasic response of skeletal muscle mitochondria to a single doxorubicin injection (20 mg/kg). Initially at 2 h doxorubicin inhibits both complex I- and II-supported respiration and increases H2O2 emission, both of which are partially restored after 24 h. The relationship between oxygen consumption and membrane potential (ΔΨ) is shifted to the right at 24 h, indicating elevated reducing pressure within the electron transport system (ETS). Respiratory capacity is further decreased at a later time point (72 h) along with H2O2-emitting potential and an increased sensitivity to mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening. These novel findings suggest a role for skeletal muscle mitochondria as a potential underlying cause of doxorubicin-induced muscle dysfunction.  相似文献

The relative levels of pelvic floor muscle (PFM) activation and pressure generated by maximum voluntary PFM contractions were investigated in healthy continent women. The normal sequence of abdominal and PFM activation was determined.Fifteen women performed single and repeated maximum voluntary PFM contractions in supine, sitting and standing. PFM electromyographic (EMG) signals and associated intra-vaginal pressure data were recorded simultaneously. Surface EMG data were recorded from rectus abdominus (RA), external obliques (EO), internal obliques (IO) and transversus abdominus (TA).Abdominal and PFM EMG and intra-vaginal pressure amplitudes generated during voluntary PFM contractions were not different among the positions. Muscle activation sequence differed by position. In supine, EO activation preceded all other muscles by 27 ms (p = 0.043). In sitting, all of the muscles were activated simultaneously. In standing, RA and EO were activated 11 and 17 ms, respectively, prior to the PFMs and TA and IO were activated 10 and 12 ms, respectively, after the PFMs (p  0.001).The results suggest that women are able to perform equally strong PFM contractions in supine, sitting and standing, however the pattern of abdominal and PFM activation varies by position. These differences may be related to position-dependent urine leakage in women with stress incontinence.  相似文献

Research has raised a growing concern about the accuracy of rescaled generic musculoskeletal models for estimating a subject's musculoskeletal geometry. Information extracted from magnetic resonance (MR) images can improve the subject-specific detail and accuracy of musculoskeletal models. Nevertheless, methods that allow efficient, automated definition of subject-specific muscular models for use in biomechanical analysis of gait have not yet been published to the best of our knowledge. We report a novel method for automated definition of subject-specific muscle paths using non-rigid image registration between an atlas image and the subject's MR images. We validated this approach quantitatively by measuring the distance between automatically and manually defined coordinates of muscle attachment sites. Data was collected for 34 muscles in each lower limb of 5 paediatric subjects diagnosed with diplegic cerebral palsy and presenting varying degrees of increased femoral anteversion. Distances showed an overall median Euclidean error of 6.1 mm: 2.0 mm along the medio-lateral direction, 1.8 mm along the anterior–posterior direction and 3.8 mm along the superior–inferior direction. A qualitative validation between automatically defined muscle points and the muscular geometry observed in the subject's medical image data corroborated the quantitative validation. This automated approach followed by visual inspection and, if needed, correction to the muscle paths, reduced the time required for defining 34 lower-limb muscle paths from around 3.5 to 1 h. Furthermore, the method was also applicable to aberrant skeletal geometry. Using the proposed method, defining MR-based musculoskeletal models becomes a time efficient and more accurate alternative to rescaling generic models.  相似文献

This study sought to identify any differences in peak muscle activation (EMGPEAK) or average rectified variable muscle activation (EMGARV) during supinated grip, pronated grip, neutral grip and rope pull-up exercises. Nineteen strength trained males (24.9 ± 5 y; 1.78 ± 0.74 m; 81.3 ± 11.3 kg; 22.7 ± 2.5 kg m−2) volunteered to participate in the study. Surface electromyography (EMG) was collected from eight shoulder-arm-forearm complex muscles. All muscle activation was expressed as a percentage of maximum voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC). Over a full repetition, the pronated grip resulted in significantly greater EMGPEAK (60.1 ± 22.5 vs. 37.1 ± 13.1%MVIC; P = 0.004; Effect Size [ES; Cohen’s d] = 1.19) and EMGARV (48.0 ± 21.2 vs. 27.4 ± 10.7%MVIC; P = 0.001; ES = 1.29) of the middle trapezius when compared to the neutral grip pull-up. The concentric phases of each pull-up variation resulted in significantly greater EMGARV of the brachioradialis, biceps brachii, and pectoralis major in comparison to the eccentric phases (P = <0.01). Results indicate that EMGPEAK and EMGARV of the shoulder-arm-forearm complex during complete repetitions of pull-up variants are similar despite varying hand orientations; however, differences exist between concentric and eccentric phases of each pull-up.  相似文献
