Humidification can suppress water loss from an organism and has great potential for improving the cold storage of short‐lived arthropods, such as predatory mites. The effectiveness of humidity‐controlled cold storage was recently verified for Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) females but was not examined for males. Combining both males and females in one storage protocol might increase the predator population because it would enhance the opportunity for multiple mating, which is necessary for females to maximize their egg production. Newly emerged adult males were stored at an air temperature of 5°C and relative humidity (RH) of 100% or 80%. The median survival time (LT50) was 32 days at 100% RH and 14 days at 80% RH; the survival curves differed significantly. Males stored at 100% RH for 0, 10, 20 and 30 days were introduced to virgin females for mating at 25°C to evaluate their reproductive ability. The pre‐oviposition period was significantly prolonged in the females mated with males stored for ≥20 days. No negative effects of storage were observed on the oviposition period, total number of eggs or net reproduction rate (R0) in the females mated with males stored for ≤20 days or on the mean generation time (T) for those stored for 30 days. A slight decrease in the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was observed in the females mated with males stored for ≥20 days. Our storage method can preserve N. californicus males for 20 days with only a minor reduction in their survival and reproductive ability.  相似文献

The present study investigated whether long-term cold storage at high relative humidity (RH) affected the quality of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae) in terms of its survival and reproduction. For this purpose, we examined biological traits at the end of storage and during the post-storage period. Mated females three?days after adult emergence were stored individually in 1.5-ml vials for 15, 30, 45, 60, or 75?days at 5.0?±?0.3°C and RH of 99?±?0.1% under continuous darkness. At the end of the storage period, 94–100% of females had survived when the storage period was ≤30?days, but percent survival decreased with longer storage. After storage, female survival and oviposition rates were equivalent to un-stored females at 24?±?1°C, RH of 93?±?2%, and a photoperiod of LD 16:8?h. The quality of progeny (hatchability, survival to adulthood, and sex ratio) of stored females was not affected by storage periods as long as 60?days. These results indicate that storage using the tested method can preserve N. californicus for at least 30?days without any degradation.  相似文献

Low air temperature accompanied with high humidity is effective for long-term cold storage of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) (Acari: Phytoseiidae). To further improve this storage method, we investigated the effect of pre-storage nutrition on survival during storage and on post-storage quality in terms of survival, oviposition, and progeny viability. The predatory mite was fed from the egg to adult stage on the diapausing two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), non-diapausing spider mites, or Japanese pear pollen, Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai. Newly emerged N. californicus adult females and males were mated, and then both were stored at 7.5 °C and a vapor pressure deficit of 0.0 kPa for up to 75 days. Survival during storage and post-storage quality was significantly better with the diapausing spider mite diet than with the other diets. No effects on the survival or sex ratio of the progeny of the stored adults were observed, regardless of diet or storage duration. Providing diapausing spider mites as a pre-storage diet therefore significantly improves the long-term storage of N. californicus. We discuss the possibility that ingestion of the cryoprotectants, antioxidants, and energy reserves that are present in rich amounts in diapausing spider mites mitigates chilling injury.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of relative humidity (RH) on cocoon formation and survival in the braconid parasitoid wasp Cotesia glomerata (L.) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) are investigated under various humidity conditions (50, 75, 90, 95 and 100% RH) at 20 °C and under an LD 16 : 8 h photoperiod. The mortality rate at the time of egression from hosts under 100% RH is significantly higher than for other RHs. Cocoon clusters formed at 100% RH spread significantly more than those formed at 50, 75, or 90% RH. Developmental periods differ significantly among RHs under which wasps developed. The mean period from the egression from hosts to adult emergence is 8.7 days when developed at 50–95% RHs, and 8.0 days at 100% RH. The emergence rates of C. glomerata that are maintained under the same humidity conditions after egression from hosts are not significantly different among RHs. However, emergence rates from cocoons that are transferred from 100% RH to 50 and 75% RH are < 70%, although the rates are > 90% in most cases. Some wasps do not emerge from cocoons: more than 60% die after adult eclosion at all RHs; the relative frequency of adult deaths is approximately 90% at 50% RH. Relative humidity influences the cluster and cocoon status strongly: both good clusters and cocoons are formed at low RHs. Emergence rates from cocoons of different ranks are significantly different: the rates of low‐rank cocoons are low at low RHs. The survival of C. glomerata is affected strongly by RH through cocoon formation.  相似文献

The performance of Tetranychus urticae and its predator Neoseiulus californicus on ten strawberry cultivars was determined in the laboratory. Development time and survival of T. urticae from egg to adult were recorded on Albión, Aromas, Camarosa, Diamante, Festival, Kp, Sabrosa, Selva, Sweet Charlie, and Whitney. Fecundity of newly molted and mated females was recorded during the first 10 days of oviposition. Predation rate and fecundity of N. californicus were tested on Albión, Aromas, Festival, Kp, Sabrosa, and Whitney. Predator females reared on each cultivar were placed individually in experimental units, and the number of eggs per day was counted during 3 days. Cultivars with high hairiness (Albión, Aromas, and Festival) and cultivars with low hairiness (Sabrosa, Whitney and Kp) were identified, to assess the effect on the performance of both species. Development time, survival from egg to adult, and fecundity of T. urticae differed among cultivars. Festival was classified as moderately resistant, Aromas and Kp were moderately susceptible, and the others were intermediate. The number of prey consumed per day per female of N. californicus differed between cultivars and time. Fecundity of N. californicus did not differ among cultivars; however, it did over time. The development time and fecundity of T. urticae did not differ among high and low hairiness cultivars. The glandular hairiness affected neither consumption nor fecundity of N. californicus. According to detrimental and propitious effect on T. urticae and N. californicus performance, respectively, we concluded that Festival and Albión could be used along with this predator in T. urticae management programs.  相似文献

Behavioural responses were studied in mated and unmated females of a Dutch strain of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae which were destined to enter diapause. Observations were confined to the period between acquirement of the winter coloration by the females (a few days after the last moult) and their entering of artificial hibernation sites offered to the mites on the host leaves. Unmated females were found to stay longer on the leaf surface than mated females; they entered the hibernation sites significantly later than mated females. The delay in the search for hibernation sites shown by unmated females may be seen as a behavioural adaptation to enhance the chance of being fertilized before hibernation. Winter survival of mated and unmated diapausing females of the same strain of mites was studied both in the laboratory at a constant temperature of 2±1°C and outdoors under natural climatic conditions in Amsterdam during the winter of 1990–1991. Survival was high under both conditions for mated as well as unmated females; no significant differences in survival were found between both types of female. Observations on post-diapause females of Tetranychus atlanticus (a mite belonging to the T. urticae complex) sampled from strawberry fields near Moscow in spring, showed that at most 10% of the females of this natural spider mite population were unmated. Both mated and unmated females had survived winter temperatures of -28 to -30°C.  相似文献

Polyandry is more widespread than anticipated from Bateman’s principle but its ultimate (evolutionary) causes and proximate (mechanistic) correlates are more difficult to pinpoint than those of polygyny. Here, we combined mating experiments, quantification of reproductive traits and microsatellite genotyping to determine the fitness implications of polyandry in two predatory mite species, where males are highly polygynous (up to 45 fertilized females during life), whereas females range from monandry to various polyandry levels. The medium-level polyandrous (up to eight male mates possible) Neoseiulus californicus received clear direct and indirect benefits: multiply mated females produced more offspring with higher survival chances over longer times than singly mated females. In contrast, singly and multiply mated females of the low-level polyandrous (commonly two male mates at maximum) Phytoseiulus persimilis produced similar numbers of offspring having similar survival chances. In both species, multiple mating resulted in mixed offspring paternities, opening the chance for indirect fitness benefits such as enhanced genetic compatibility, complementarity and/or variability. However, the female re-mating likelihood and the paternity chance of non-first male mates were lower in P. persimilis than in N. californicus. Regarding proximate factors, in both species first mating duration and female re-mating likelihood were negatively correlated. Based on occasional fertilization failure of first male mates in P. persimilis, and mixed offspring paternities in both species, we argue that fertilization assurance and the chance to gain indirect fitness benefits are the ultimate drivers of polyandry in P. persimilis, whereas those of N. californicus are higher offspring numbers coupled with enhanced offspring viability and possibly other indirect fitness benefits. Overall, the adaptive significance and proximate events well reflected the polyandry levels. Our study provides a key example for linking behavioral experiments, quantification of reproductive traits and paternity analysis via offspring genotyping to explain the evolution of differing levels of polyandry.  相似文献

Understanding the factors affecting stress tolerance in phytoseiid mites is critical for their integration into biological control programs. In the present study, the effects of diet (varying in prey species, physiological status and phenotype) are examined on the future starvation tolerance of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus McGregor (Acari: Phytoseiidae). The predators are fed from egg to adulthood on diapausing or nondiapausing Tetranychus urticae, Tetranychus kanzawai (wild and albino strains) or the nondiapausing species Panonychus citri (wild and albino strains). Thereafter, 3‐day‐old mated adult females are held without food at 25 ± 1 °C and a relative humidity of 98 ± 2%. The survival of these starved females is observed daily until all females have died. The survival curves and mean survival times of N. californicus are found to vary among prey types and are significantly longer when the predator is fed with diapausing prey. This enhanced survival is consistent with high concentrations of glycogen and triacylglyceride in the body of the predator at the onset of starvation. The predators fed nondiapausing prey have shorter survival times, and the glycogen and triacylglyceride contents in their bodies are low or undetectable. The protein contents of the predator's body are similar after consuming different prey types, except for a high concentration when fed the albino strain of P. citri. Protein content is unlikely to play a direct role in starvation tolerance, although it may affect the response to varying glycogen and triacylglyceride levels. These findings indicate that nutritional value of prey has a strong impact on the starvation tolerance of N. californicus.  相似文献

In a laboratory flight tunnel, mated female, unmated female, and male adult cabbage loopers, Trichoplusia ni (Hübner), exhibited chemically mediated anemotaxis (attraction) in response to intact potted cabbage plants (Brassica oleracea L.), leading to contact with the plant. Similar attraction responses were also observed by mated females to potted soybean (Glycine max (L.)), tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Miller), and celery (Apium graveolens L.) plants in noncompetitive comparisons. Mated females, unmated females, and males flew to cabbage plants throughout the scotophase. Response rates for mated females were higher than for unmated females and males. Mated female cabbage loopers were attracted by odors of cabbage, soybean, tomato, or celery piped into a flight tunnel from single plants held in glass jars and not to odors of the non-host plant Setcreasea purpurea, or to humidified air. They were also attracted to water washings of cabbage at dosages of 0.4 to 2.0 gram equivalents, when presented on cotton dental wicks in the flight tunnel.  相似文献

Plutella xylostella in the temperate zone shows a clear seasonal change in adult body size. In the laboratory, large and small moths were produced during immature stages at 15°C and 25°C, respectively. These moths were then used to evaluate longevity, age-specific flight ability, flight ability of mated and unmated females, and the influence of flight experience on the subsequent reproductive success. The large moths lived longer and displayed a greater flight ability over 3 weeks. Irrespective of body size, unmated females flew for a longer time than mated females, and flight experience affected their subsequent reproductive success. Females of both sizes mated and laid eggs soon after emergence, without any obvious pre-reproductive period. More flight experience did not delay oviposition, but did reduce egg production. It is likely that large moths with a longer adult life span and greater flight ability are better fitted for long-distance flight and more fecund than small ones. These experimental results may explain why long-distance migration ofP. xylostella is mostly seen during cool seasons, when relatively large moths with long forewing appear in the field.  相似文献

The effect of five constant relative humidity (RH) regimes (12%, 33%, 55%, 75% and 94%) on the preimaginal development and adult longevity and reproduction of Dichochrysa prasina Burmeister was studied at 26 ± 1 °C and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) under laboratory conditions. For the experiments, larvae were fed individually on eggs of the flour moth Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller), whereas adults on a liquid diet consisting of water, yeast hydrolysate, sugar and honey. The experimental insects were maintained individually in sealed plastic containers with saturated water salt solutions at the base to control RH. Preimaginal developmental time from egg to adult for females and males was significantly shorter at 75% and 94% RHs than at other RHs in the range from 12% to 55%. Percentages of adult emergence were similar at all RHs tested and varied from 52.5% to 75.0%. Adult females that had no access to water and were maintained at 12%–75% RH lived on average less than two weeks and laid no eggs, whereas at 94% RH they lived longer and each laid on average 201 eggs. When the females had periodic access to a water source a significant increase in both longevity and egg production occurred and the estimated intrinsic rate of increase was high, irrespective of RH. These results could be useful for the mass-rearing of D. prasina and for better understanding its population dynamics under field conditions.  相似文献

Summary The origin of sociality is best studied in taxa with rudimentary social development, like the stenogastrine wasp, Eustenogaster fraterna. Our study of colony structure and relatedness in this species found very small colonies aver-aging only 2.7 adult females, including a single mated, re-productive female. Microsatellite genotyping showed that adult females were related to each other but not generally as full sisters (r = 0.427 ± 0.131, 95% confidence interval). Microsatellite genotyping showed that sociality is not favored by the haplodiploid hypothesis, because relatedness of unmated females to female brood is low (r = 0.210 ± 0.171, 95% confidence interval), far lower than that among sisters in either haplodiploid or diploid species. Relatedness of unmated females to female brood is significantly lower than that of mated females to female brood (r = 0.374 ± 0.266). Mated females are also significantly more related to the male brood (r = 0.871 ± 0.168) than are unmated females (r = 0.588 ± 0.339), suggesting that unmated helpers do not generally produce sons. These results argue against an important role for exceptionally high relatedness in the origin of eusociality. One quarter of the brood could not have been the progeny of any collected female, suggesting high rates of queen turnover. In all, 7/17 nests had some brood that could not be assigned to existing adult females. Background and Aims

Pollinator-limited seed-set in some terrestrial orchids is compensated for by the presence of long-lived flowers. This study tests the hypothesis that pollen from these insect-pollinated orchids should be desiccation tolerant and relatively long lived using four closely related UK terrestrial species; Anacamptis morio, Dactylorhiza fuchsii, D. maculata and Orchis mascula.

Methods

Pollen from the four species was harvested from inflorescences and germinated in vitro, both immediately and also after drying to simulate interflower transit. Their tolerance to desiccation and short-term survival was additionally assessed after 3 d equilibration at a range of relative humidities (RHs), and related to constructed sorption isotherms (RH vs. moisture content, MC). Ageing of D. fuchsii pollen was further tested over 2 months against temperature and RH, and the resultant survival curves were subjected to probit analysis, and the distribution of pollen death in time (σ) was determined. The viability and siring ability, following artificial pollinations, were determined in D. fuchsii pollen following storage for 6 years at –20 °C.

Key Results

The pollen from all four species exhibited systematic increases in germinability and desiccation tolerance as anthesis approached, and pollen from open flowers generally retained high germinability. Short-term storage revealed sensitivity to low RH, whilst optimum survival occurred at comparable RHs in all species. Similarly, estimated pollen life spans (σ) at differing temperatures were longest under the dry conditions. Despite a reduction in germination and seeds per capsule, long-term storage of D. fuchsii pollen did not impact on subsequent seed germination in vitro.

Conclusions

Substantial pollen desiccation tolerance and life span of the four entomophilous orchids reflects a resilient survival strategy in response to unpredictable pollinator visitation, and presents an alternative approach to germplasm conservation.  相似文献

This study on the nightingale, Luscinia megarhynchos, is the first to examine both nocturnal and diurnal singing activity of mated and unmated males throughout a species' entire breeding cycle. Nocturnal song was sung mostly by unmated males. After pair formation, males ceased nocturnal singing and resumed it if their mate deserted. These results strongly suggest that nocturnal song of unmated males functions to attract a mate. Diurnal singing activity before females settled was low and did not predict future mating status. However, unmated males showed a continuous increase in diurnal singing activity until the end of the breeding cycle, but diurnal singing activity of mated males decreased after the egg-laying period. Mated males resumed nocturnal song for, on average, 3 nights during egg laying by their mates. This second period of nocturnal song coincided with the peak of diurnal singing activity. Such a high male singing effort during egg laying might allow the female to adjust her reproductive effort to male quality, deter rival males (e.g. through honest announcement of the female's fertility) or attract females for extrapair copulations. Laboratory experiments to determine aspects of the reproductive biology of Pseudaphycus maculipennis are described. All experiments were carried out at a constant temperature of 21 ± 2 °C, a 16-h photoperiod and ambient RH. Pseudaphycus maculipennis was shown to be an arrhenotokous, synovigenic, gregarious endoparasitoid of Pseudococcus viburni. Females and males lived for 16 and 11 days, respectively, when fed either honey-agar or mealybug honeydew. Relatively, large instars (third instar or adult females) were preferred for oviposition; mated females parasitized more mealybugs than unmated females, and the progeny sex ratio favored females by 3:1. Egg load increased with age from emergence to day 8, averaging 23 mature eggs/female. Mean realised daily fecundity never exceeded 5, with a mean lifetime fecundity of 46 eggs/female. Parasitised mealybugs remained alive for about 5 days and then mummified. Total development period was 20–21 days (larva 4–5 days, prepupa 3 days, pupa 8–9 days). Development periods of eggs and individual larval instars were not measured. A mean of 3.01 ± 0.1 parasitoids/mealybug were reared after individual parasitism events, increasing through super-parasitism (either self or conspecific) to 9 parasitoids/mealybug when hosts were exposed to competing females. Pseudaphycus maculipennis progeny emerged from the mummies in discrete cohorts over periods ranging from 3 min to 18 h (depending on the number of cohorts).  相似文献

The predatory gall midge Feltiella acarisuga (Vallot) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) is a biological control agent for twospotted spider mites on greenhouse vegetable crops. Effects of temperature and relative humidity (RH) on development of immatures, reproduction, and prey capture were determined in order to confirm the suitability of F. acarisuga for use in greenhouses. Developmental time ranged from 10 days at 27°C to 34 days at 15°C. At 20°C, developmental time was significantly shorter at 96% RH than at 84% RH. There was very poor survival of immatures at 64% RH and none at 36%. Lifespan of adult females decreased with increasing temperature, but temperature had no significant effect on number of eggs laid. At 20°C, lifespan was longer at 84 and 96% RH than at 64 or 36% RH. The number of spider mites attacked by 3-day-old larvae over 8 h increased with increasing temperature from 15 to 27°C. The number of mites attacked also increased with increasing RH at 27°C. We conclude that F. acarisuga will complete its life cycle and reproduce under conditions typically found in vegetable greenhouses in northern temperate climates. However, extended periods of low RH (<60% RH) could reduce reproduction and survivorship sufficiently to impair the predator's action against spider mite populations.  相似文献

A series of experiments was conducted to investigate whether temperatures of 18 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C and a photoperiod of 16L:8D at immature and adult stages would differentially affect the mating duration and egg production of Neoseiulus californicus females mated once. Mating duration was strictly determined by ambient temperature at the time of mating, regardless of the temperatures under which they were raised. Compared with a consistent 25 °C condition, total fecundity of females decreased when temperature conditions of 18 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C were applied during any life stage (immature, mating, and oviposition periods) or a combination of different stages. In general, however, if mites were raised in conditions of ≤ 25 °C, and mated and oviposited at conditions of ≥ 25 °C, total egg production was relatively high. Based on these results, the adaptation of mites to thermal environments was discussed.  相似文献

Amblyseius californicus was introduced into the UK in the early 1990s as a biocontrol agent against glasshouse red spider mite Tetranychus urticae. This study investigated the effects of temperature on the establishment potential of A. californicus in the UK in the light of recent reports of their successful overwintering outside of glasshouse environments. The developmental thresholds were 9.9 and 8.6 °C respectively using simple and weighted linear regression. Using the day-degree requirement per generation calculated by weighted regression (143 day-degrees) in combination with climate data, it was estimated that up to seven generations would be possible annually outdoors in the UK. Non-diapausing adult females froze at −22 °C, with 100% mortality after reaching their freezing temperature. Up to 90% of mites died before freezing after short exposures to low temperatures. Significant acclimation responses occurred; 90% of acclimated individuals survived 26 days exposure at 0 °C and 11 days at −5 °C (acclimated mites were reared at 19 °C, 6L:18D followed by 1 week at 10 °C, 12L:12D). Non-diapausing adult females survived over 3 months outdoors in winter under sheltered conditions and oviposition was observed. The experimental protocol used in this study is discussed as a pre-release screen for the establishment potential of other Amblyseius species, and similar non-native biocontrol agents.  相似文献

Analysis of cuticular hydrocarbons from mated and unmated male houseflies, Musca domestica, indicated that only minor changes in composition occurred during the post-eclosion period. In contrast, female hydrocarbon composition changed considerably during the post-eclosion period and was affected by age, mating, and sexual maturation. The cuticular hydrocarbons from sexually mature female houseflies, both mated and unmated, were attractive to male houseflies. Hydrocarbons from unmated male houseflies were not attractive to male houseflies. Hydrocarbons from males held to maturity with females were somewhat attractive to males, probably as a result of physical transfer of the attractant from the females.  相似文献

Abstract.  The thermoregulation behaviour of the adult codling moth, Cydia pomonella , is investigated in the laboratory using temperature gradient experiments. Unmated males and females are tested at dawn when moths typically move to resting sites. Mated females are tested during oviposition over a complete diurnal cycle. Temperature strongly affects microhabitat selection in adult moths. Unmated males and females prefer to rest at the low-temperature ends of temperature gradients between 15 and 32 °C. Relative humidity does not influence the thermal response in unmated females, whereas males show a less distinct temperature selection under high humidity. By contrast to unmated moths, ovipositing females prove to be highly thermophilous (i.e. they deposit the highest proportions of their eggs in the zones of highest temperatures of gradients between 15 and 36 °C). This striking discrepancy in thermal response of females between their premating and oviposition period is likely to reflect an adaptation to different selection pressures from the thermal environment. Unmated moths may benefit from low temperatures by a longer lifespan and crypsis within the tree canopy, whereas the choice of warmer oviposition sites by mated females will favour a faster development of eggs.  相似文献
