Experimental and observational evidence from a 5-year study of a partially marked population of black vultures, Coragyps atratus, suggests that individuals can find food by following others from overnight roosting groups. Natural food sources usually lasted long enough for recruitment to occur. Black vultures formed larger roosting groups and had enhanced second-day recruitment during winter, when their main food source was least abundant. Successful foragers returned to experimental food sources on subsequent days and generally preceded new arrivals. Arrivals at bait were clumped on days of discovery and second days, but incoming groups were larger on second days and highly skewed towards early arrivals. In general, adults arrived at baited sites earlier than young adults and juveniles. During natural roost departures, adults were as likely to depart at the head of departing groups as at the rear, while young were concentrated in the rear. Birds removed experimentally from the population long enough to be naive about the location of food followed others from the roost when reintroduced. Control adults (birds caught and handled but not restrained for long) were not concentrated in the rear of roost-departing groups, as were experimental adults. Juveniles tended to follow regardless of recent experience. These results suggest that roost attendance facilitates foraging for black vultures; these roosts probably function as information centres.  相似文献

Delayed juvenile dispersal is an important prerequisite for the evolution of family‐based social systems, such as cooperative breeding and eusociality. In general, young adults forego dispersal if there are substantial benefits to remaining in the natal nest and/or the likelihood of dispersing and breeding successfully is low. We investigate some general factors thought to drive delayed juvenile dispersal in the horned passalus beetle, a family‐living beetle in which young adults remain with their families in their natal nest for several months before dispersing. Fine‐scale population genetic structure indicated high gene flow between nest sites, suggesting that constraints on mobility are unlikely to explain philopatry. Young adults do not breed in their natal log and likely disperse before reaching breeding age, suggesting that they do not gain direct reproductive benefits from delayed dispersal. We also examined several ways in which parents might incentivize delayed dispersal by providing prolonged care to adult offspring. Although adult beetles inhibit fungal growth in the colony by manipulating both the nest site and deceased conspecifics, this is unlikely to be a major explanation for family living as both parents and adult offspring seem capable of controlling fungal growth. Adult offspring that stayed with their family groups also neither gained more mass nor experienced faster exoskeleton development than those experimentally removed from their families. The results of these experiments suggest that our current understanding of the factors underlying prolonged family living may be insufficient to explain delayed dispersal in at least some taxa, particularly insects.  相似文献

Young primates in the family Callitrichidae (the marmosets and tamarins) receive extensive and relatively prolonged care from adults. Of particular note, callitrichid young are routinely provisioned until well after weaning by parents and helpers, which is in stark contrast to typical juvenile primates, who must acquire most of their food independently once they are weaned. Adults of some callitrichid species produce a specialized vocalization that encourages immature group members to take proffered food from the caller. Here, I report that wild adult golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) not only used this food-offering call to encourage young, mobile offspring to approach and take captured prey from them, but as the young began to spend significant time foraging for themselves and to acquire prey by independent means, the frequency of these vocalizations in the context of food transfer declined. Adults then began to use food-offering calls in a novel context: to direct juveniles to foraging sites that contained hidden prey that the adults had found but not captured. During the period of these most frequent adult-directed prey captures, the independent prey-capture success rates of juveniles improved. Thus, adults modified their provisioning behavior in a progressive developmentally sensitive manner that may have facilitated learning how to find food. I hypothesize that as a result of these demonstrations by adults, juveniles either may be encouraged to continue foraging despite low return rates or to learn the properties of productive prey-foraging substrates in a complex environment.  相似文献

Older adults are more likely than young to fall upon a loss of balance, yet the factors responsible for this difference are not well understood. This study investigated whether age-related differences in movement stability, limb support, and protective stepping contribute to the greater likelihood of falling among older adults. Sixty young and 41 older, safety-harnessed, healthy adults were exposed to a novel and unexpected forward slip during a sit-to-stand task. More older than young adults fell (76% vs. 30%). Falls in both age groups were related to lesser stability and lower hip height at first step touchdown, with 97.1% of slip outcomes correctly classified based on these variables. Decreases in hip height at touchdown had over 20 times greater effect on the odds of falling than equivalent decreases in stability. Three age differences placed older adults at greater risk of falling: older adults had lower and more slowly rising hips at slip onset, they were less likely to respond to slipping with ample limb support, and they placed their stepping foot less posterior to their center of mass. The first two differences, each associated with deficient limb support, reduced hip ascent and increased hip descent. The third difference resulted in lesser stability at step touchdown. These results suggest that deficient limb support in normal movement patterns and in the reactive response to a perturbation is a major contributor to the high incidence of falls in older adults. Improving proactive and reactive limb support should be a focus of fall prevention efforts.  相似文献

Between 1962 and 1966 eggs of Larus argentatus and L. fuscus were interchanged andalmost 900 young were reared by the wrong species. Many of these cross-fostered young were later recovered or retrapped on and away from the colonies.
The British population of argentatus is sedentary and ringed birds are not recovered outside Britain, whereas fuscus normally migrates. Many cross-fostered argentatus migrated to France, Spain and Portugal, areas where fuscus is common, but they did not migrate as far as the control fuscus . It is possible that these cross-fostered argentatus had followed their foster parents when these migrated, but this is unlikely as the cross-fostered fuscus also migrated although their foster parents would have remained in Britain.
Despite wide ecological and behavioural overlaps, interbreeding between L. argentatus and L.fuscus is exceedingly rare. However, as a result of cross-fostering experiments, 31 and 40 mixed pairs were found on Skokholm in 1968 and 1969 respectively. Although some of the birds involved were unringed it is probable that all the adults in mixed pairs had been cross-fostered. Other cross-fostered birds were found mated with their own species and it appears that the sex of the imprinted birds was important. Female gulls will usually only mate with males of their own species, or in the case of the cross-fostered birds, with males of their foster species. Males will mate with either species.
Evidence is given that suggests that the colour of the mantle and wings is important in species recognition at long range, and the colour of eye-ring and join of the mandibles for recognition at short range. The role of voice is uncertain but general behaviour is probably unimportant.  相似文献

Summary Periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.) rarely flew distances greater than 50 m across an open field or along a forest edge. Most cicadas caught after flying 50 m or more were females and all of these females had mated. Flights were most common when adults were 2 to 3 weeks old. Among insects in general, most dispersing individuals are barely post-teneral or extremely young. Cicadas are discussed as an exception to this generality. Both sexes of cicadas are attracted by the male song to chorusing centers for mating (Alexander and Moore 1958). Trees which were chorusing centers had more eggnests than those which were not, suggesting a lack of postmating dispersal from the chorusing trees.  相似文献

The abilities of human B cells from young and aged subjects to form colonies in semisolid cultures stimulated with Staphylococcus protein A were investigated. Approximately three-fourths of aged adults had significantly diminished colony responses compared to young adults. In 55% of these aged adults, the in vitro blocking of monocyte prostaglandin synthesis lead to a 1.5-fold or greater augmentation of the depressed colony responses. Other experiments showed that the improvement with indomethacin could not be explained by the greater sensitivity of aged versus young B-cell colony precursors to prostaglandin suppression. However, indomethacin failed to improve the depressed colony responses of the remaining aged adults. This failure could not be attributed to deficient interleukin 1 production, detectable alterations in accessory cell subsets of monocytes, or the lack of potential colony precursors bearing sIgD/M. Instead, the B cells from these aged subjects demonstrated a substantial decrease in the capping of sIgD/M compared to the B cells of aged subjects which displayed improved colony responses with indomethacin and compared to the B cells from young adults. Thus, these data indicate that the diminished B-cell colony responses of aged humans represent aberrancies within both the B-cell and monocyte lineages which might coexist.  相似文献

RAND, COLLEEN S. W., JAQUELYN LISS RESNIK, AND ALEX M. C. MACGREGOR. A comparison of body size evaluations of obesity surgery patients and general population adults. Obes Res. Objective: To compare post-operative obesity surgery patients and general population adults in their assessments of a wide range of body sizes. Research Methods and Procedures: Obesity surgery patients (n = 274) and general population adults (n = 326) rated ideal and socially acceptable body sizes in separate arrays of babies, children, young adults, and middle-aged and older adults. Nine line figure drawings ranging from very thin to very obese were rated for each array. Results: Both groups selected the same ideal body size for all arrays except for babies. Both groups rejected obese and very thin body sizes as socially acceptable. However, the obesity surgery patients were more restrictive than general population adults in their ratings of socially acceptable body sizes. Current obesity status did not impact ratings for the patient or general population subjects. In the patient sample, time since surgery did not influence body size evaluations. Discussion: The study of body size ratings limited only to the “ideal” size may be misleading because it may mask subtle but meaningful differences between groups. The consistent difference in more restrictive ratings of obesity surgery patients compared to general population adults may be due to patients' greater psychological investment in endorsing the societal ideal body size. It may also be due to patients' status as peripheral group members of the normal weight community. The inability of some patients to maintain their post-operative weight loss may be particularly problematic for those who have defined “socially acceptable” body size most narrowly.  相似文献

Recent neuroimaging studies using multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) show that distributed patterns of brain activation elicited by different visual stimuli are less distinctive in older adults than in young adults. However, less is known about the effects of aging on the neural representation of movement. The present study used MVPA to compare the distinctiveness of motor representations in young and older adults. We also investigated the contributions of brain structure to age differences in the distinctiveness of motor representations. We found that neural distinctiveness was reduced in older adults throughout the motor control network. Although aging was also associated with decreased gray matter volume in these regions, age differences in motor distinctiveness remained significant after controlling for gray matter volume. Our results suggest that age-related neural dedifferentiation is not restricted to sensory perception and is instead a more general feature of the aging brain.  相似文献

Wild reed warblers use several techniques to capture their insect prey (mainly Diptera). Different techniques are used for different prey and so vary with prey activity. Independent young birds pick stationary prey from foliage more frequently than adults, which often catch prey in mid-air. This is not because the young need time to develop feeding skills. Captive birds which did not have experience of flies until fully grown were no worse at capturing them than birds which had had continuous experience from an early age. Adults probably use more energy-demanding techniques in order to collect enough food for their young as well as themselves. However, rapid learning of prey handling ability is restricted to a sensitive period early in development, before structural maturation of the bill is completed.  相似文献

An important pattern in host-parasite assemblages is a higher intensity of parasites in juveniles than in adults, but the reasons for these differences remain obscure. Three non-mutually exclusive hypotheses have been proposed: (1) heavily parasitized juveniles die before being recruited into the adult population ('selection' hypothesis); (2) the development of an acquired immunity by the host in front of the parasite reduces the intensity of the parasite in adult hosts ('immunity' hypothesis); and (3) differences in behavior makes adults less exposed to the parasite than juveniles ('vector exposure' hypothesis). Having rejected the 'vector exposure' hypothesis in a previous study, here we tested the 'selection' and 'immunity' hypotheses in feral pigeons (Columba livia) infected by the blood parasite Haemoproteus columbae. In agreement with the 'selection' hypothesis, young (but not adult) pigeons that were highly parasitized had a lower probability of surviving until adulthood, independent of their body condition. However, selection was not strong enough to account for the observed differences in parasite intensity between age-classes, and after selection parasite intensity of survivors still remained 85% higher in juveniles than in adults. In contrast, the 'immunity' hypothesis offered a greater explanatory power. The intensity of blood parasites in young pigeons, but not in adults, decreased over time so dramatically that by the time they had become adults their intensities were indistinguishable from that typically seen in adults. Therefore, while selection against highly parasitized juveniles can contribute to some extent to a reduction in parasitism seen in the adult population, age-specific blood parasitism in feral pigeons is best explained as a transitory phase just before the host develops an effective immune response.  相似文献

Based on field studies, we proposed a model that describes how vocal ontogeny proceeds over a 2-year period in wild brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater). We tested this model in the laboratory by exposing yearling male cowbirds (n?=?7 tutees), trapped at the start of the breeding season in a southern California dialect, to adult tutors with unfamiliar song types from a different dialect. As adults at the start of their second season, the tutees all had enlarged repertoires based almost entirely on tutor song types. Thus, tutees dropped song types in their yearling repertoires that did not match tutor types and added tutor songs that they had heard for the first time as yearlings in captivity. We discuss these findings in the context of a previous captivity study in which tutees also changed their yearling repertoires but generally failed to copy their tutors’ songs. This is the first laboratory study to fully replicate the delayed ontogeny we have described for wild cowbirds, and validates the delayed vocal development model we proposed. This model is important in a more general context, because it explains how song dialects can remain temporally stable despite immigration by young males with non-local songs.  相似文献

The third-stage larvae of Angiostrongylus costaricensis were successfully cultured to young adults in a chemically defined medium. The most suitable medium for the development was Waymouth's medium among eight defined media examined. Twenty-eight days after cultivation in this medium, 77% of the larvae developed to young adults, although these worms gradually died thereafter. When Waymouth's medium was supplemented with mouse red blood cells, these young adult worms continued their development. The mean body lengths of the worms cultivated in Waymouth's medium supplemented with RBCs were significantly larger than those of the worms in the medium without RBCs on Days 14 and 21 after cultivation. Addition of RBCs was essential for their further development. At 28 days after cultivation, the maximum body length of the worms was 2.1 mm for males and 3.3 mm for females. Additions of serum, yeast extract lactalbumin hydrolysate, and growth factors to Waymouth's medium did not provide any additional benefits for worm development.  相似文献

Surgical exploration for suspected appendicitis is the most common acute abdominal operation in children and young adults. However, in 20-30% of such explorations, the appendix is not inflamed. It is commonly thought that a perforated appendix may result in tubal dysfunction because of peritoneal adhesions after inflammation and a subsequent increased risk for extrauterine pregnancy and female infertility. Findings are reported from an examination of fertility patterns in women who had their appendix removed in childhood. 9840 women under age 15 years when they underwent appendicectomy between 1964 and 1983 were age-matched with 47,590 control women from the Swedish general population and followed until 1994. Women with a history of perforated appendix had a similar rate of first birth as the control women, as well as a similar distribution of parity at the end of follow-up. Women who had had a normal appendix removed had an increased rate of first births, and on average had their first child at an earlier age and reached a higher parity than control women. These findings therefore suggest that a history of perforated appendix in childhood does not seem to have long-term negative consequences upon female fertility.  相似文献

One hundred and fifty young psychotic adults are treated at the Montreal Sacré-c?ur hospital’s specialized clinic for the treatment of first psychotic episodes. The clinic’s principal objective is the early intervention in the development of the psychotic process to ultimately decrease the length of time the psychosis remains untreated and avoid the deterioration of the cognitive, relational and social functioning of these young adults. This objective is achieved through the establishment of an important and long lasting therapeutic relationship, the use of new-generation anti-psychotic drugs, family-oriented intervention and the participation in a group cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy program. This program is divided into five sub-programs according to a continuum of social and cognitive functioning, ranging from weak to strong. The therapeutic activities of every subprogram are developed stepwise, and their sequence is determined by the resolution of the first psychotic episode as well as by the social integration of the participants. In this article, the authors present the structure and the functioning of the clinic. They also present the organization, and the general objectives, of the program as well as the different cognitive and behavioural strategies aimed at resolving the principal problems encountered by young adults at the time of their first psychotic episodes.  相似文献

Songbirds are one of the few vertebrate groups (including humans) that evolved the ability to learn vocalizations. During song learning, social interactions with adult models are crucial and young songbirds raised without direct contacts with adults typically produce abnormal songs showing phonological and syntactical deficits. This raises the question of what functional representation of their vocalizations such deprived animals develop. Here we show that young starlings that we raised without any direct contact with adults not only failed to differentiate starlings' typical song classes in their vocalizations but also failed to develop differential neural responses to these songs. These deficits appear to be linked to a failure to acquire songs' functions and may provide a model for abnormal development of communicative skills, including speech.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that aging is accompanied by remodelling of the immune system including thymic atrophy and increased frequency of senescent T cells, leading to immune compromise. However, physical activity, which influences immunity but declines dramatically with age, is not considered in this literature. We assessed immune profiles in 125 adults (55–79 years) who had maintained a high level of physical activity (cycling) for much of their adult lives, 75 age‐matched older adults and 55 young adults not involved in regular exercise. The frequency of naïve T cells and recent thymic emigrants (RTE) were both higher in cyclists compared with inactive elders, and RTE frequency in cyclists was no different to young adults. Compared with their less active counterparts, the cyclists had significantly higher serum levels of the thymoprotective cytokine IL‐7 and lower IL‐6, which promotes thymic atrophy. Cyclists also showed additional evidence of reduced immunesenescence, namely lower Th17 polarization and higher B regulatory cell frequency than inactive elders. Physical activity did not protect against all aspects of immunesenescence: CD28?veCD57+ve senescent CD8 T‐cell frequency did not differ between cyclists and inactive elders. We conclude that many features of immunesenescence may be driven by reduced physical activity with age.  相似文献
