Instantaneous heart rate (IHR) of chickens began to fluctuate on days 13-14 of incubation and heart rate (HR) fluctuations became augmented towards hatching and increased further after hatching. IHR fluctuations of newly hatched chicks have been categorized into three types: type I HR variability (HRV), which is high-frequency oscillation; type II HRV, which is low-frequency oscillation; and type III HR irregularities (HRI), which are irregular HR accelerations. The present experiment was carried out to investigate the origin of type II HR oscillations. Following previous evidence, we assumed that the low-frequency oscillation of HR in newly hatched chicks was related to thermoregulation and changed by environmental temperature. Eventually, type II HRV was produced or augmented by exposure of hatchlings to lowered ambient temperature and was abolished by exposure to elevated environmental temperature. The hatchlings that were exposed to large temperature decreases tended to increase their HR more than those exposed to small temperature decreases, and vice versa. The HR oscillation accompanied by an elevation of HR baseline in response to cooling may be a phenomenon related to thermoregulation in chick hatchlings.  相似文献

Four-month-old infants can integrate local cues provided by two-dimensional pictures and interpret global inconsistencies in structural information to discriminate between possible and impossible objects. This leaves unanswered the issue of the relative contribution of maturation of biologically predisposed mechanisms and of experience with real objects, to the development of this capability. Here we show that, after exposure to objects in which junctions providing cues to global structure were occluded, day-old chicks selectively approach the two-dimensional image that depicted the possible rather than the impossible version of a three-dimensional object, after restoration of the junctions. Even more impressively, completely naive newly hatched chicks showed spontaneous preferences towards approaching two-dimensional depictions of structurally possible rather than impossible objects. These findings suggest that the vertebrate brain can be biologically predisposed towards approaching a two-dimensional image representing a view of a structurally possible three-dimensional object.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of eggshells of Kinosternon angustipons is described and compared with the ones of K. leucostomum and K. scorpoides. Four eggs from captive turtles (30 sections) were studied with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). the shell has three layers, cuticle or external, calcereous or intermediate and testacean or internal. Hatched and non-hatched eggs have similar characteristics in their external surface: fanned units and proteic fibers superposed at random. They differ in the presence of spongelike structures and more external porosity in non-hatched eggs. The intermediate and testacean layers of the hatched eggs have lance point like spaces and are thin in the proteic fibers. The ultrastructural evidence shows that during the embryonic development the thickness of the peal decreases. Non-hatched K. angustipons shells are thicker than in the other two kinosternon species of costa Rica.  相似文献

Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis has never been isolated from wild animals although it is apparently capable of inducing infections in man, dogs, and donkeys. An analysis of the standard hamster culture system for analyzing infectivity of Leishmania sp. was undertaken. Results indicate that for L. (V.) braziliensis, routine cultivation of aspirates taken from the inoculation sites of 1-mo-infected hamsters should be undertaken. Moreover, in at least 1 of the 3 strains examined, isolation of the parasite was only achieved after 84 days of cultivation.  相似文献

Characteristic changes in ketone body concentrations in blood, liver, and skeletal muscle were investigated in detail in newly hatched chicks. The concentration of beta-hydroxybutyrate in the blood was maximal at hatch (0 day), markedly decreased to 3 days, then maintained at low levels, up to 14 days of age. The concentration of acetoacetate in blood, on the other hand, did not change after hatching but remained lower than that of beta-hydroxybutyrate at all ages. In liver and muscles, the concentration of beta-hydroxybutyrate changed in a manner similar to that in the blood. The muscle to blood ratio of the beta-hydroxybutyrate concentration on days -1 and 0 was significantly higher than those at 1 through 14 days post-hatch. These results show that newly hatched chicks have the same high ketone body concentrations in the skeletal muscle, blood and liver. It is, hence, suggested that uptake of beta-hydroxybutyrate by muscles is substantial or that ketogenesis, if any, occurs in muscles immediately before and after hatching of chicks.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate carotenoid and vitamin E distribution in egg and tissues of newly hatched chicks from wild mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), game pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), free-range guinea fowl (Numida meleagris), hen (Gallus domesticus) and domestic duck (Anas platyrhynchos) and intensively housed hens. Carotenoid concentrations in the egg yolk of free-range guinea fowl, pheasant and wild mallard were similar (61.3-79.2 microg/g). Egg yolks from ducks and intensively housed hens were characterised by the lowest carotenoid concentration comprising 11.2-14.8 microg/g. However, carotenoid concentration in eggs from free-range ducks and hens was less than half of that in free-range guinea fowl or pheasant. Depending on carotenoid concentration in the livers of species studied could be placed in the following descending order: free living pheasant>free-range guinea fowl>free-range hen>intensively housed hen>wild mallard>housed duck>free-range duck. The carotenoid concentrations in other tissues of free-range guinea fowl and pheasant were substantially higher than in the other species studied. Egg yolk of housed hens was characterised by the highest alpha- and gamma-tocopherol concentrations. In accordance with the alpha-tocopherol concentration in the egg yolk, the birds can be placed in the following descending order: intensively housed hen>wild mallard>free-living pheasant>free-range duck>free-range hen=free-range guinea fowl>housed duck. The main finding of this work is species- and tissue-specific differences in carotenoid and vitamin E distribution in the various avian species studied.  相似文献

The development of the stearyl-CoA desaturase system was studied in newly hatched chicks. The desaturation activity was very low in hepatic microsomes from chick embryos, less than 0.05 nmol of oleate formed min?1 (mg of protein)?1. After hatching and feeding, the desaturation activity gradually increased to 4–5 nmol of oleate formed min?1 (mg of protein)?1 in 6-day-old chicks. This increase could be prevented by administration of cycloheximide or actinomycin D. Measurement of the microsomal electron transfer components throughout the induction period showed no significant changes in the NADH- or NADPH-specific reductases or in the concentrations of cytochromes b5 and P-450. However, the activity of the terminal component of the desaturase system (the desaturase enzyme) increased in parallel with the desaturation activity. Supplementing the liver microsomes from chick embryos with isolated desaturase enzyme resulted in the formation of an active desaturation system. It is proposed that the induction of the stearyl-CoA desaturase system during development of newly hatched chicks is dependent on the synthesis of the terminal desaturase enzyme.  相似文献

At birth, the intestine becomes the sole site for nutrient absorption requiring a dramatic increase in blood flow. The vascular changes accompanying this transition have been partly characterized in mammals. We investigated, using wire myography, the developmental changes in chick mesenteric artery (MA) reactivity. Rings of the MA from 15-day (E15) and 19-day (E19) chicken embryos (total incubation 21 days) as well as non-fed 0–3-h-old (NH3h) and first-fed 1-day-old (NH1d) newly hatched chicks contracted in response to KCl, norepinephrine (NE), U46619, and endothelin (ET)-1 and relaxed in response to acetylcholine (ACh), sodium nitroprusside (SNP), and forskolin indicating the presence of electro- and pharmaco-mechanical coupling as well as cGMP- and cAMP-mediated relaxation. In ovo development and transition to ex ovo life was accompanied by alterations in the response of the MAs, but a different developmental trajectory was observed for each reactivity pathway tested. Thus, the contractile efficacy of KCl underwent a linear increase (E15 < E19 < NH3h < NH1d). The efficacy of NE and U46619 increased in ovo, but not ex ovo (E15 < E19 = NH3h = NH1d) and the efficacy of ET-1 peaked at E19 (E15 < E19 > NH3h = NH1d). The relaxations elicited by ACh (endothelium-dependent), SNP, and forskolin did not undergo significant developmental changes. In conclusion, the ability of chick MAs to constrict in response to pharmacological stimuli increases during the embryonic period, but no dramatic changes are induced by hatching or the first feeding. Maturation of vasodilator mechanisms precedes that of vasoconstrictor mechanisms. Alterations of the delicate balance between vasoconstrictors and vasodilators may play an important role in perinatal intestinal diseases.  相似文献

Nice & Nice (1932) raised the question of how male birds of those species in which only the females incubate, discover that their young have hatched. However, there are very few data available with which to provide an answer. In a review of his own observations on American passerines and scattered references in the literature, Skutch (1953) could find no evidence that females deliberately attract the attention of their mates to the nest after hatching has occurred. He concluded that males usually discover their nestlings without any assistance and that their promptness in doing so depends upon the frequency with which they have visited the nest during incubation. Since there were no species for which Skutch (1953) had more than two records of the events leading up to a male feeding his young for the first time, these conclusions were based almost entirely upon interspecific comparisons. In this note I present some limited data on the variation in the speed with which male European Robins Erithacus rubecula discover that their young have hatched.  相似文献

The gene expression pattern of the glucose transporters (GLUT1, GLUT3, GLUT8, and GLUT12) among pectoralis major and minor, biceps femoris, and sartorius muscles from newly hatched chicks was examined. GLUT1 mRNA level was higher in pectoralis major muscle than in the other muscles. Phosphorylated AKT level was also high in the same muscle, suggesting a relationship between AKT and GLUT1 expression.  相似文献
