1. Only a few studies have compared patterns of genetic variation among populations of different Daphnia species on a regional scale. The present study addresses this gap and examines the relationship between diversity as revealed by allozyme variation and habitat size for populations of Daphnia pulex, D. obtusa and D. curvirostris in Flanders (Belgium). In addition, we examined whether patterns of isolation‐by‐distance could be observed in each of these three Daphnia species. 2. The relationship between genetic diversity and habitat size varied among Daphnia species that occur in the same region. In D. pulex and D. obtusa populations, a positive relationship between local genetic diversity and habitat size was found, whereas the relationship was negative in D. curvirostris populations. 3. Regional genetic diversity was lower than expected from patterns of local genetic diversity in D. pulex and D. obtusa populations in Flanders. This suggests that the subdivision of local Daphnia populations in a region did not obviously increase genetic diversity. 4. Genetic differentiation among populations of these three species in Flanders was moderate and comparable with values observed in other Daphnia species. Patterns of isolation‐by‐distance could be observed, but the scatter was high (D. pulex) or the slope was very low (D. obtusa).  相似文献

Effective nature conservation requires coherent actions based on the best available evidence concerning protected species. Recent studies have suggested that European nightjars Caprimulgus europaeus forage outside their recognized breeding habitats, yet, for Flanders (northern Belgium) information on nightjar foraging behaviour and key foraging habitats is lacking. To assess whether the foraging ecology of nightjars in Flanders is similar to that observed in other parts of Europe, we studied the crepuscular behaviour of this species in Bosland (northeastern Flanders) during a five‐year radio telemetry study. Tracking of 48 individuals within a coniferous forest was standardized and home ranges were calculated using a kernel density estimator (fixed kernel). Habitat use was investigated by comparing kernel placement to available habitat. Average maximal foraging distance was 2603 ± 1094 m and home ranges extended up to 691 ha. We identified the key foraging habitats to be extensively‐cultivated grasslands and recreational areas, areas that were previously assumed unsuitable for Belgian nightjars. Our results indicate the importance of foraging sites outside the breeding territory, confirming the findings of previous studies performed elsewhere in Europe. Incorporating our findings into future conservation plans could, therefore, lead to improved efficiency of EU conservation measures, designed for the protection of this bird species in Flanders.  相似文献

Halophytes are plant species that tolerate high salinity levels. To adapt to these particular abiotic conditions, they develop multiple physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms, including the biosynthesis of osmolytes, enzymes and specialized metabolites. The French Flanders coast of the North Sea is an ideal environment for this kind of plant. Amaranthaceae is one of the most represented botanical families of halophytes present on this coast, with 15 species belonging to 7 genera, namely Atriplex, Beta, Halimione, Kali, Oxybasis, Salicornia and Suaeda. Some of these species are well known as wild edible plants, and some are used in traditional medicine. This review examines the chemistry of these species and their potential for human health.

Stripe rust caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) may decrease wheat yield significantly in severe outbreaks. The most cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach to reduce yield losses due to rust diseases is deployment of effective resistant genes in wheat cultivars. The causal agents evolve and may break existing resistant sources as well. Therefore, long-term conventional breeding strategies and the ongoing evolution of pathogen populations in the region would put the success of breeding programmes at risk so that there is always a need for speeding up the process of germplasm enhancement through production of doubled-haploid breeding materials. In this study, we aimed at introgression of stripe rust resistance trait from three genotypes (Flanders, Martonvasar-17 (MV17) and Bersee) into a widely adapted cultivar “Ghods”. Positively selected F2BC2 progenies of three backcrossing schemas, i.e. (i) Flanders/3*Ghods; (ii) Ghods*3/MV17; and (iii) Hybride-de-bersee/3*Ghods, were used to produce three small-size doubled-haploid populations via wheat × Maize pollination methodology. The doubled-haploid populations were examined against two predominantly isolates of P. striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst) i.e. 6E134A+ and 6E2A+Yr27+ and the screening revealed that 44 and 52 of the progenies are resistant to the above-mentioned isolates, respectively. Field data have shown that the stripe rust resistance doubled-haploid germplasm are comparable to local check cultivars in yield and earliness.  相似文献

Throughout the Middle Ages forests in Flanders (northern Belgium) experienced a dramatic human influence. Forests were logged for wood supply and converted to arable land. The structure of the remaining forests was altered. This, combined with the tempering influence of the Atlantic climate, results in conditions that are suboptimal for dendrochronological research. Tree-ring series of Quercus robur and Q. petraea of timber from medieval archaeological sites are often short, show abrupt growth-rate variations and are complacent. The question arises whether tree-ring series of this type are potential records of past management and whether they could constitute the basis of a reference chronology for archaeological dating. During six archaeological excavations in and around the medieval town of Ypres, cross-sections were collected. The tree-ring series could be dated back to the 12th–14th centuries, using reference chronologies from surrounding regions. The growth pattern of the short sequences displays a high similarity to tree-ring series from modern coppice. For the first time, it has been confirmed that dendrochronological analysis in Flanders is possible and can provide valuable information on medieval forest use and structure.  相似文献

The industrial park of Herdersbrug (Brugge, Flanders, Belgium) comprises 92 small and medium‐sized enterprises, a waste‐to‐energy incinerator, and a power plant (not included in the study) on its site. To study the carbon dioxide (CO2) neutrality of the park, we made a park‐wide inventory for 2007 of the CO2 emissions due to energy consumption (electricity and fossil fuel) and waste incineration, as well as an inventory of the existing renewable electricity and heat generation. The definition of CO2 neutrality in Flanders only considers CO2 released as a consequence of consumption or generation of electricity, not the CO2 emitted when fossil fuel is consumed for heat generation. To further decrease or avoid CO2 emissions, we project and evaluate measures to increase renewable energy generation. The 21 kilotons (kt) of CO2 emitted due to electricity consumption are more than compensated by the 25 kt of CO2 avoided by generation of renewable electricity. Herdersbrug Industrial Park is thus CO2 neutral, according to the definition of the Flemish government. Only a small fraction (6.6%) of the CO2 emitted as a consequence of fossil fuel consumption (heat generation) and waste incineration is compensated by existing and projected measures for renewable heat generation. Of the total CO2 emission (149 kt) due to energy consumption (electricity + heat generation) and waste incineration on the Herdersbrug Industrial Park in 2007, 70.5% is compensated by existing and projected renewable energy generated in the park. Forty‐seven percent of the yearly avoided CO2 corresponds to renewable energy generated from waste incineration and biomass fermentation.  相似文献

A study based on AFLP markers was conducted to characterise the present population genetic structure of Carpinus betulus in Europe and to formulate guidelines for the use of this species in plantations on a local scale in Flanders. High within-population diversity and little (but significant) genetic differentiation were detected at both Flemish and European scales. However, there was a pattern of isolation by distance only at the European scale. Within-population gene diversity, a new rarefaction-based measure of number of genotypes (band richness) and percentage of polymorphic loci are lower north of major mountain chains, suggesting that the mountain ranges formed a second bottleneck for the hornbeam during postglacial recolonisation. In Flanders, despite lower gene diversity, there were more polymorphic loci than in other European populations, a pattern that might have been caused by the mixing of material through planting, e.g. in hedges. In view of these findings, it is advised to create a single Flemish seed zone and to use preferentially reproductive material from this seed zone for new plantations in Flanders.  相似文献

Nearly 263 000 individual length–weight (L/W) data, collected during 2839 fish stock assessments between 1992 and 2009, were used to calculate L/W relationships (W = aLb) of 40 freshwater fish species from Flanders (Belgium). Roach Rutilus rutilus, perch Perca fluviatilis, three‐spine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, gudgeon Gobio gobio and European eel Anguilla anguilla were the most abundant species in our surveys. Mean a and b values were in accordance with those available in FishBase. Mean b across all examined species is 3.094 (95% CL = 3.041 to 3.148) indicating a tendency towards slightly positive allometric growth in most fishes (thirty‐three species with b > 3). On the basis of a form factor equation, we characterized 2 species as ‘eel‐like’, 7 as ‘elongated’, 22 as ‘fusiform’ and 9 species as ‘short and deep’. This paper adds a substantial dataset to the yet scarcely available a and b values of European populations of freshwater fish species.  相似文献

In Flanders (northern Belgium), the common (butlocally rare) P. veris and its rarerelative Primula vulgaris, twoself-incompatible perennials, mainly occur infragmented habitats of the intensively usedagricultural landscape. We investigated geneticvariation and structure for respectively 30 and27 allozyme loci in 24 and 41 populations ofP. veris and P. vulgaris, inrelation to species (local) abundance and topopulation size and plant density, and comparedpopulations of linear landscape elements(verges) with non verge populations. Therare P. vulgaris was geneticallydepauperate compared to the commoner P.veris. Both species showed a geographicalstructure of genetic variation and isolation bydistance. The scattered populations of P.veris from the Westhoek region (polderhabitats) were of smaller size, geneticallydepauperate and showed higher interpopulationdivergence compared to the Voeren region, wherepopulations are densely distributed andhabitats less fragmented. Verge and non vergepopulations showed similar populations sizesand levels of genetic variation. For bothspecies, small populations showed a loss ofgenetic variation, but still maintained highlevels of observed heterozygosity.Within-population plant density negativelyaffected allelic richness in P. veris.Ours results indicate that common species canalso be negatively affected by habitatfragmentation (perhaps even more so than rarespecies) and that verge populations can have ahigh potential conservation value. Phosphatidyl choline (PC) is synthesised in wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Flanders) aleurone tissue during early germination when new endomembranes are being formed. Although gibberellic acid does not ostensibly affect PC levels, it inhibits the incorporation of choline and differentially and specifically modulates the turnover of the N-methyl and methylene carbons of the choline headgroup of PC. Gibberellic acid has no effect on turnover of the phosphate moiety of either PC or the other major phosphatides. Although seed dispersal is considered to be a key process determining the spatial structure and spread of non-native plant populations, few studies have explicitly addressed the link between dispersal vector behaviour, seed distribution and seedling recruitment to gain insight into the process of exotic species invasion within a fragmented landscape context. The present study analyses the relationship between avian frugivory and spatial patterns of seed deposition and seedling recruitment for an expanding population of the invasive Prunus serotina in a hedgerow network landscape in Flanders, Belgium. We quantified fruit production, observed frugivores, and determined the spatial distribution of bird droppings and P. serotina seedlings. A relatively diverse assemblage of frugivores visited P. serotina seed trees, with Columba palumbus and Turdus merula being by far the most important dispersers. Landscape structure strongly affected dispersal vector behaviour and the spatial distribution of perching birds, droppings and seedlings. Frugivorous birds non-randomly dispersed seeds to perching sites and an association between perching birds, seed deposition and seedling recruitment was found. Results indicate that landscape structure contributes to non-random seed deposition of P. serotina by common local frugivores. Cutting the larger seed trees is proposed as the most feasible measure to slow down the invasion rate.  相似文献

Common hamsters Cricetus cricetus (L.)show a highly fragmented distributionpattern across Europe. Over the last decades,human influence caused significant populationdeclines in particular at the western rangeboundary. Despite the initiation of breedingand release programs the genetic structure anddiversity of European common hamsterpopulations is largely unknown. In this study,hamsters from ten localities in five Europeancountries were investigated. Mitochondrialcontrol region was sequenced from 145 animalsrepresenting all sampled populations. 385hamster were screened for polymorphisms at 11microsatellite loci. Both marker systemsrevealed extensive genetic differentiationamong European common hamsters. Westernpopulations displayed very low levels of mtDNAdiversity (H = 0 – 0.2, Alsace, Limburg,Flanders, Baden-Wuerttemberg) compared toeastern populations from Saxony-Anhalt,Thuringia and Southern Moravia (H = 0.663– 0.816). Microsatellite analyses revealed asimilar pattern with low to moderate diversityvalues in western hamsters (A = 1.636 –5.364; H e = 0.111 – 0.504) and highlevels of polymorphism in eastern hamsters(A = 8.909 – 9.818; H e = 0.712– 0.786). High microsatellite based F STmeasures (up to 0.635) suggest a typical islandmodel of distribution with no current gene flowbetween most areas. Western hamster populationsexhibit obvious similarities in mitochondrialhaplotype and microsatellite alleledistributions. Gene trees group westernhamsters consistently together on the samebranch but bootstrap values never reachedsignificance. There are strong indications thatlow diversity in western populations ispartially caused by a joint historic founderevent and not only by recent population breakdowns. Overlapping mitochondrial haplotypesprove a close association between westernhamsters and animals from the east German rangein the recent past which does not support theexistence of a separate subspecies C. c.canescens in Europe. Hamsters from southernMoravia emerged as the genetically mostdistinguished population and could be part of a different genetic lineage in Europe.  相似文献

1. Water quality monitoring data from 10 watercourses and laboratory mesocosm studies were used to assess the potential impacts of the crustacean amphipod invader Dikerogammarus villosus on resident macroinvertebrate assemblage structure in Central European fresh waters. 2. The presence of D. villosus was associated with a decline in the prevalence of many native species, pollution sensitive as well as pollution tolerant, and changes in biotic indices, despite the trends of improved water quality coinciding with the invasion period. A general increase in the prevalence of other invaders was also noted. The potential impacts of D. villosus were substratum dependent, differing between stone, concrete and sand‐dominated sites. 3. Mean Multimetric Macroinvertebrate Index Flanders (MMIF) values were marginally lower when D. villosus was present (P < 0.06), as opposed to when other amphipod species or no amphipods were present, despite the improved water quality. Mesocosm studies showed that several macroinvertebrate taxa were completely eliminated in treatments with D. villosus, oligochaete worms, Caenidae mayfly, chironomids and tipulids being particularly vulnerable to D. villosus predation. Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) scores were lower in mesocosms with D. villosus as opposed to the native Gammarus pulex or no amphipods at all. 4. We predict that resident macroinvertebrate assemblages in both Central Europe and Britain will come under increasing pressure as D. villosus invasions progress. Consequently, macroinvertebrate biotic indices, such as the MMIF or BMWP, may need to be revised to account for changes in taxa sensitivities to water quality as well as increased predation and competition.  相似文献

The occurrence of Aeromonas spp. and hygienic indicator organisms in raw and treated waters of five drinking water production plants in Flanders (Belgium) was surveyed over a period of 17 months. Aeromonads were isolated on ampicillin-dextrin agar (ADA) and further identified by gas-liquid chromatographic analysis of their cellular fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) content. ADA medium was found to be highly specific for the enumeration of Aeromonas spp. In general, Aeromonas counts were very low in untreated groundwater but numbered 104–106 colony-forming units per liter in open storage reservoirs for surface water. Aeromonas spp. were seasonally distributed with maximal densities occurring during the summer. The ecology of Aeromonas in the different waters was studied in relation to the physical, chemical, and microbiological water characteristics. Strongly positive correlations were observed between Aeromonas densities and heterotrophic plate counts, whereas a clearly negative relationship was found with dissolved oxygen. On average, 99.7% of the aeromonads were removed by flocculation-decantation followed by breakpoint chlorination, whereas 98.9% were removed by slow sand filtration. Flocculation-decantation without breakpoint chlorination did not reduce the microbial numbers. At three of four drinking water production plants tested, rapid sand filtration decreased the number of aeromonads and hygienic indicator organisms. At one plant, however, the numbers of Aeromonas and hygienic indicator organisms were high in the sand filter effluents. Increased numbers of aeromonads were also counted in the effluent of the activated carbon filters. Hence, inactivation of Aeromonas spp. by the current process technology appears not sufficient to exclude postchlorination. The survival of aeromonads in certain filter systems may be due to the growth of these bacteria on biodegradable organic material, provided by the decomposition from bacteria, algae, or other sources. Multiply mating ant males are rare, because in most ant species, multiple mating opportunities for males are scarce. Gnamptogenys striatula is an exception to this rule, as intranidal mating offers protection and a local female-biased sex ratio. In a behavioral experiment, we confirm the males’ ability to inseminate several receptive workers, with four females being the observed maximum. D. Rosa arvensis is a naturally rare and scattered indigenous wild rose species in Flanders, the northern part of Belgium. As is the case for many light demanding woody species in this area, it is currently threatened by habitat fragmentation and destruction due to high human pressure. Recent inventories revealed a restricted distribution pattern for this rose, concentrated mainly in two regions of the south western part of Flanders. Surprisingly, strong differentiation was observed among natural populations in these two proximate regions in both an AFLP-based and a morphological analysis. A common garden experiment indicated a partly genetic basis for the morphological divergence. Additionally, the AFLP analysis of roses sampled in the same forested area within one of the two regions resulted in two differentiated gene pools. Possible causes for the observed differentiation can be adaptive divergence, founder effects and/or historical hybridisation with dogroses. Together, the congruent genetic and morphometric differentiation between the two geographic regions urges a cautious approach in conservation programs.  相似文献

Abstract

Throughout the world, forest covers one-third of the land's area. Present and historical human activities caused tremendous land use changes and triggered the onset of unseen climate changes. Yet, these socio-economically based environmental changes interfere with services that forests provide to mankind from global to local scales. Densely populated regions such as Flanders (Belgium), with over 430 people per km2, have the dubious honour to serve as examples of extreme human induced forest changes. The issue of forest biodiversity is reviewed in the light of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment scheme. Flanders is a poorly forested region (11% forest cover); supporting services are consequently low. Merely 16% of that area has known 230 years of continuous forest cover, representing forest with the highest current biodiversity. Also, the demands for regulating services are growing and the limits may have been reached. Provisioning services may increase again in future when demands for, for example bio-energy, increase. Cultural services, particularly the recreational function, have increased greatly. Human well-being in Flanders partly depends on the services provided by forest ecosystems. However, as demands on forests are huge, a shift to a sustainable use of forest resources will be essential to assure its beneficial role for present and future generations.  相似文献

Habitat fragmentation is known to generally reduce the size of plant populations and increase their isolation, leading to genetic erosion and increased between-population genetic differentiation. In Flanders (northern Belgium) Primula vulgaris is very rare and declining. Populations have incurred strong fragmentation for the last decades and are now restricted to a few highly fragmented areas in an intensively used agricultural landscape. Previous studies showed that small populations of this long-lived perennial herb still maintained high levels of genetic variation and low genetic differentiation. This pattern can either indicate recent gene flow or represent historical variation. Therefore, we used polymorphic microsatellite loci to investigate genetic variation and structure in adult (which may still reflect historical variation) and seedling (recent generation, thus affected by current processes) life stages. The recent generation (seedlings) showed a significant loss of observed heterozygosity (H o) together with lower expected heterozygosity (H e), a trend for higher inbreeding levels (F IS) and higher differentiation (F ST) between populations compared to the adult generation. This might result from (1) a reduction in effective population size, (2) higher inbreeding levels in the seedlings, (3) a higher survival of heterozygotes over time due to a higher fitness of heterozygotes (heterosis) and/or a lower fitness of homozygotes (inbreeding depression), (4) overlapping generations in the adult life stage, or (5) a lack of establishment of new (inbred) adults from seedlings due to degraded habitat conditions. Combining restoration of both habitat quality and gene flow between populations may be indispensable to ensure a sustainable conservation of fragmented populations.  相似文献

Do-Not-Resuscitate Policy on Acute Geriatric Wards in Flanders, Belgium. This study describes the historical development and status of a do-not-resuscitate (DNR) policy on acute geriatric wards in Flanders, Belgium. In 2002 (the year Belgium voted a law on euthanasia), a structured mail questionnaire was sent to all head geriatricians of acute geriatric wards in Flanders (N=94). Respondents were asked about the existence, development, and implementation of the DNR policy (guidelines and order forms). The response was 76.6%. Development of DNR policy began in 1985, with a step-up in 1997 and 2001. In 2002, a DNR policy was available in 86.1% of geriatric wards, predominantly with institutional DNR guidelines and individual, patient-specific DNR order forms. The policy was initiated and developed predominantly from an institutional perspective by the hospital. The forms were not standardized and generally lacked room to document patient involvement in the decision making process. Implementation of institutional DNR guidelines and individual DNR order forms on geriatric wards in Flanders lagged behind that of other countries and was still incomplete in 2002. DNR policies varied in content and scope and were predominantly an expression of institutional defensive attitudes rather than a tool to promote patient involvement in DNR and other end-of-life decisions.
