The effects of phosphorus deficiency on carbohydrate fractions of Mentha arvensis L. var. piperascens were studied. Mint plants were grown in sand cultures under full nutrition and phosphorus deficiency conditions. Component organs, viz., leaf, stem and root, were sampled at four different stages of the growth cycle and analysed for various sugar fractions. In leaf and root phosphorus deficiency brought about a definite increase in all sugar fractions whereas in stem a reduction was noticed. The stem appeared to be the principal storage organ throughout the growth. Maximum sugar concentration was recorded at the age of 70 days, which represents the full maturity stage, and coincided with maximum essential oil accumulation.  相似文献

A microcosm system is described which permits assessment of the progressive growth of filamentous fungi through soil. We report on its application to measure the effects of Coriolus versicolor and Phanerochaete chrysosporium upon the sorptivity and water repellence of a mineral soil, measured using a miniature infiltration device. Both fungal species caused moderate sub-critical repellence. Since the pore structure was unaffected, the repellence was probably due to hydrophobic substances of fungal origin. This is the first report of changes in soil repellence caused by the growth of potential xenobiotic bioremediating fungi. The potential consequences are discussed.  相似文献

The chemical composition of seed and root oils from Angelica archangelica L. was investigated. Analyses were performed by GC/MS and GC using two columns of different polarities (polyethylene glycol (DB-Wax) and 5% phenyl/95% polydimethylsiloxane (HP-5)), for the separation of several co-eluting components. A total of 58 compounds were identified, accounting for 96.3% (seed) and 93.5% (root) of the oils, respectively. A high content of beta-phellandrene (74.7%) was found in Angelica seed oil. Root oil contained a larger amount of macrocyclic lactones (1.3%) in comparison to the seed oil (0.4%). Different harvest dates produced only slight changes in the root-oil composition. In root oil harvested in summer, the beta-phellandrene content increased by ca. 36%, but no significant changes in the relative compositions of other components were observed. Fresh root oils were collected in five fractions (constant time intervals) during steam distillation (see Table). The highest-boiling fraction contained 9.3% of macrocyclic lactones such as tridecano-13-lactone (5.0%), 12-methyltridecano-13-lactone (0.4%), tetradecano-14-lactone (0.1%), pentadecano-15-lactone (3.5%), 14-methylpentadecano-15-lactone (1; trace), hexadecano-16-lactone (trace), and heptadecano-17-lactone (0.2%). This is the first report of the occurrence of 14-methylpentadecano-15-lactone (muscolide; 1) in a natural product.  相似文献

Plant parasitic nematodes have developed the capacity to sense and respond to chemical signals of host origin and the ability to orientate towards plant roots enhances the nematode's chance of survival. Root exudates contain a range of compounds which mediate belowground interactions with pathogenic and beneficial soil organisms. Chemical components of root exudates may deter one organism while attracting another and these compounds alter nematode behaviour and can either attract nematodes to the roots or result in repellence, motility inhibition or even death. In vitro, plant signals present in root exudates, trigger a rapid alteration of the surface cuticle of Meloidogyne incognita and the same changes were also induced by indole-acetic acid (IAA). IAA binds to the chemosensory organs of M. incognito and it is possible that IAA acts as a signal that orientates the nematode on the root surface in the rhizosphere and/or inside the root tissue and thereby promotes nematode infection.  相似文献

This work evaluates different experimental heated oil treatments that are being developed for wooden items used above ground (Hazard Class III). Threshold limit values in accordance with European Standard EN 113 (1996) were established for these treatments. The biocidal heated oil treatment examined is based on a vegetable–mineral oil mixture combined with two triazole fungicides, propiconazole and tebuconazole; it is not a traditional wood preservative, as its efficacy is based on a dual effect, water repellence due to oil and chemical protection due to fungicides. The high level of water repellency caused some test blocks to remain too dry for decay to occur, so the validity requirements of the EN 113 standard test were not met. There are clearly limitations in conducting EN 113 tests when highly water repellent treatments are to be evaluated. Where conclusions could be drawn, the results indicate that the triazoles did not perform as well in the heated oil system as would have been anticipated. It is concluded that to gain a true indication of how biocidal heated oil treatments will perform in service, field trials need to be undertaken.  相似文献

Curcumin removed turmeric oleoresin (CRTO) was extracted with hexane concentrated to get turmeric oil, and that was fractionated using silica gel column chromatography to obtain three fractions. These fractions were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Turmeric oil contained aromatic turmerone (31.32%), turmerone (15.08%) and curlone (9.7%), whereas fractions III has aromatic turmerone (44.5%), curlone (19.22%) and turmerone (10.88%) as major compounds Also, oxygenated compounds (5,6,8-10) were enriched in fraction III. Turmeric oil and its fractions were tested for antioxidant activity using the beta-carotene-linoleate model system and the phosphomolybdenum method. The fraction III showed maximum antioxidant capacity. These fractions were also used to determine their protective effect against the mutagenicity of sodium azide by means of the Ames test. All the fractions and turmeric oil exhibited a markedly antimutagenicity but fraction III was the most effective. The antioxidant effects of turmeric oil and its fractions may provide an explanation for their antimutagenic action.  相似文献

Caraway (Carum carvi L.) is a medicinal and aromatic plant; its seeds (fruits) are used as spice and they contain essential oils. We hypothesized that by collecting caraway oil at different time points during the extraction process, we could obtain oil fractions with distinct chemical composition. A hydrodistillation time (HDT) study was conducted to test the hypothesis. The caraway seed oil fractions were collected at eight different HDT (at 0 – 2, 2 – 7, 7 – 15, 15 – 30, 30 – 45, 45 – 75, 75 – 105, and 105 – 135 min). Additionally, a non‐stop HD for 135 min was conducted as a control. Most of the oil was eluted early in the HD process. The non‐stop HDT treatment yielded 2.76% oil by weight. Of the 24 essential oil constituents, limonene (77 – 19% of the total oil) and carvone (20 – 79%) were the major ones. Other constituents included myrcene (0.72 – 0.16%), trans‐carveol (0.07 – 0.39%), and β‐caryophyllene (0.07 – 0.24%). Caraway seed oil with higher concentration of limonene can be obtained by sampling oil fractions early in HD process; conversely, oil with high concentration of carvone can be obtained by excluding the fractions eluted early in the HD process. We demonstrated a method of obtaining caraway seed oil fractions with various and unique composition. These novel oil fractions with unique composition are not commercially available and could have much wider potential uses, and also target different markets compared to the typical caraway essential oil.  相似文献

The 70% alcohol extract of the Egyptian Morus alba L. root bark was fractionated over cellulose CC eluted with water, 50% methanol and finally with 100% methanol to yield 3 fractions (MRBF-1, MRBF-2 and MRBF-3), respectively. In continuation of chromatographic purification of 70% alcohol extract fractions of the Egyptian M. alba L. root bark, 4 compounds namely: mulberroside A, 5,7,2'-trihydroxyflavanone-4'-O-beta-D-glucoside and albanols A and B were isolated from MRBF-2 for the first time from the Egyptian plant. Experimentally induced atherosclerosis was produced by feeding rats a diet enriched in coconut oil (25% by weight) and cholesterol (2% by weight) for 21 days. Then, hypercholesterolemic rats were orally administered (MRBF-1, MRBF-2 and MRBF-3 fractions) in a dose of 500 mg kg(-1) day(-1) for 15 successive days, in order to evaluate their expected hypocholesterolemic activity. Lipid profile parameters such as plasma total cholesterol, LDL-C, VLDL-C, LDL:HDL ratio and triglycerides, as well as plasma and liver lipid peroxides and glutathione-S-transferase enzyme levels, serum paraoxonase enzyme level, LDL oxidation, LDL aggregation and LDL retention, were measured. Plasma and liver glutathione-S-transferase enzyme levels were unaffected in all studied groups. The results revealed that the administration of (MRBF-2 and/or MRBF-3) fractions resulted in alleviation of atherosclerotic state. Administration of MRBF-3 significantly retained plasma and liver peroxides towards their normal levels, and also, produced significant increase in resistance towards major atherogenic modifications; namely LDL oxidation, LDL aggregation and LDL retention by 44%, 30%, and 33%, respectively. Thus, it can be concluded that the consumption of MRBF-2 and (MRBF-3, in some extent) fractions of M. alba L. root bark 70% alcohol extract may act as a potent hypocholesterolemic nutrient and powerful antioxidant via the inhibition of LDL atherogenic modifications and lipid peroxides formation in hypercholesterolemic rats.  相似文献

The hypothesis that the ingestion of garlic provides protection against bloodsucking pests such as mosquitoes was investigated using a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled crossover study. Subjects were asked to consume either garlic (one visit) or a placebo (the other visit). They were then exposed to laboratory-reared Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) (Diptera: Culicidae). The numbers of mosquitoes that did not feed on the subjects, the number of mosquito bites, the weights of the mosquitoes after feeding and the amounts of blood ingested were determined. The data did not provide evidence of significant systemic mosquito repellence. A limitation of the study is that more prolonged ingestion of garlic may be needed to accomplish repellence.  相似文献

Antarctic and sub-Antarctic benthic invertebrates are subjected to intense predation by mobile macroinvertebrates. Accordingly, chemical protection as well as other defensive mechanisms are expected to be common in organisms inhabiting these ecosystems. In order to evaluate anti-predation activities and allocation of chemical defenses within the anatomy of marine benthic Antarctic and sub-Antarctic invertebrates, 55 species were tested for feeding repellence against the sea star Odontaster validus, a common eurybathic sympatric predator. The invertebrates tested were collected from the deep waters of two poorly surveyed areas in terms of chemical ecology studies: the eastern Weddell Sea (Antarctica) and the vicinities of Bouvet Island (sub-Antarctica). Experiments were conducted at the Spanish Antarctic Base in Deception Island. In the feeding deterrence experiments, shrimp pieces were treated with crude lipophilic fractions obtained from each species, and were offered to the sea stars. A total of 29 species (53 %) from 7 different phyla (Porifera, Cnidaria, Chordata, Bryozoa, Echinodermata, Mollusca, and Annelida) showed feeding repellence against O. validus, and are therefore chemically protected against this keystone predator. Furthermore, 25 species were dissected into parts to investigate the possible allocation of defensive compounds. Some of the results obtained from these analyses support the prediction that the most exposed/vulnerable tissues concentrate chemical defenses to avoid predation against the sea stars. In summary, the results obtained in our survey support the hypothesis that deep-water Antarctic and sub-Antarctic benthic invertebrates are well protected chemically against sympatric predators, similarly to what has been reported in previous studies investigating shallow-water Antarctic species.  相似文献

The ability of western corn rootworm (WCR) (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) to develop resistance to various management practices requires the development of new management options. Repellent extracts can act as efficacy enhancing agents in WCR control. The present study investigated the potential repellence of garlic (Allium sativum L.), pepper (Capsicum sp. L), cape aloe (Aloe ferox Mill.), neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) and turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) derived extracts against WCR larvae in a no-choice bioassays. In initial screenings garlic and turmeric were evaluated as the most promising extracts as WCR larvae avoided garlic / turmeric treated soil. Turmeric was further evaluated in a rhizotron set up to quantify larval distribution and behavioral changes over time. WCR larvae avoided turmeric treated soil up to 0.05 m from its application in the root system, resulting in an increased dispersal and the formation of multiple clusters in the rhizotron. The proportion of larvae actively moving in the soil subsequently increased, whereas larval feeding significantly decreased. The spatial and behavioral alterations in the soil lead to the conclusion that turmeric is a repellent extract for WCR larvae. Turmeric repellence might further be exploited for WCR management through a synergy with insecticidal substances or microbial antagonists.  相似文献

Trichome-based host plant resistance is a complex mechanism that could be used in tomato breeding to control arthropod pests. The aims of this work were to evaluate the plant traits (density of trichomes and acylsucrose production) and the functional relationships of these traits with mortality, repellence, and oviposition of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae). We used a population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from the cross between the wild tomato, Solanum pimpinellifolium L. ‘TO-937’, and the cultivated tomato, Solanum lycopersicum L. Multiple regression analyses showed that high acylsucrose content and high type-IV trichome density increased mortality and repellence, and reduced oviposition of T. urticae. Single regression analyses showed that a logistic model best explained the relationship between mortality or repellence and acylsucrose content, whereas a negative-exponential model best described the relationship between oviposition and acylsucrose content. Linear models were the best-fits for the three resistance variables with trichome IV density. Probit analysis was used to estimate acylsucrose effective doses, and revealed that 31 and 10% of the RILs produced acylsucrose above the effective doses for 90% mortality or repellence, respectively. Altogether, these results indicate that S. pimpinellifolium may be a suitable genetic source of resistance to spider mites to be used in cultivated tomato.  相似文献

The repellent and acaricidal effects of some essential oils from the most typical wild plant species of northern Patagonia, Argentina, on Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman were evaluated using a complete exposure test. Honey bees, Apis mellifera L., and mites (five specimens of each per dish) were introduced in petri dishes having different oil concentrations (from 0.1 to 25 micro per cage). Survival of bees and mites was registered after 24, 48, and 72 h. An attraction/repellence test was performed using a wax tube impregnated with essential oil and another tube containing wax only. The lowest LD50 values for mites were registered for Acantholippia seriphioides (A. Gray) Mold. (1.27 microl per cage) and Schinus molle L. (2.65 microl per cage) after 24 h, and for Wedelia glauca (Ortega) O. Hoffm. ex Hicken (0.59 microl per cage) and A. seriphioides (1.09 microl per cage) after 72 h of treatment. The oil with the highest selectivity ratio (A. mellifera LD50/V. destructor LD50) was the one extracted from S. molle (>16). Oils of Lippia junelliana (Mold.) Troncoso, Minthostachys mollis (HBK) Grieseb., and Lippia turbinata Grieseb. mixed with wax had repellent properties. None of the oils tested had attractive effects on Varroa mites.  相似文献

Plant essential oils (basil, geranium, balsam fir, lavender, lemongrass, peppermint, pine and tea tree), mixed with either sunflower oil or ethyl alcohol, were applied at 5% concentrations to the sides of Holstein cattle. Pastured cattle treated with essential oils diluted in sunflower oil had less flies than the untreated control for a 24‐h period. However, the essential oil treatments were not significantly different than the carrier oil alone. Barn‐held heifers treated with essential oils and sunflower oil alone had significantly less flies than the untreated control for up to 8 h after treatment. Basil, geranium, lavender, lemongrass and peppermint repelled more flies than sunflower oil alone for a period ranging from 1.5 to 4 h after treatments applied to heifers. All essential oils repelled > 75% of the flies on the treated area for 6 and 8 h on pastured cows and indoor heifers, respectively. Geranium, lemongrass and peppermint stayed effective for a longer duration. Essential oils mixed with ethyl alcohol demonstrated less repellence than when mixed with the carrier oil. Safer's soap, natural pyrethrins without piperonyl butoxide and ethyl alcohol alone were not efficient at repelling flies. Essential oils could be formulated for use as fly repellents in livestock production.  相似文献

Crude oil is one of the major contaminants of soil and water. Biodegradation is a good option for reducing oil contamination in soil. Soil fertilizers can help the microorganisms biodegrade oil with higher efficiency. In this study, the effect of chemical fertilizers and animal manure on crude oil reduction was compared and the reduction of the aliphatic and aromatic fractions was studied during 8 months. The higher reduction of crude oil (54%) was observed in tests containing chemical fertilizers and wood chips, followed by those containing animal manure (46%). The reduction of aliphatic and aromatic fractions was also higher in fertilized tests. Our results showed that in the experiments with mixed chemical fertilizers and wood chips, the reduction of crude oil and its aliphatic and aromatic fractions was higher than the experiments with only chemical fertilizers and those with animal manure. The reductions in the experiments with animal manure, however, were higher than those with only chemical fertilizers.  相似文献

The polypeptide complement of enriched soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr. cult. wells) root plasma membrane fractions was studied by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Good resolution was obtained when polypeptides were solubilized in sodium dodecyl sulfate and when butylated hydroxytoluene was included in the vesicle isolation and solubilization media. The pattern obtained on the two-dimensional slab gel for root plasma membrane was characteristic for that membrane. The polypeptide complements from mitochondrial membranes and from enriched fractions of three other endomembrane components were solubilized and electrophoresed for comparison. Each membrane preparation was identifiable on the basis of its characteristic electrophoretogram. Electrophoresis of protein solubilized from plasma membrane fractions isolated from meristematic and mature root tissue revealed both qualitative and quantitative differences in the respective protein complements.  相似文献

These studies describe the influence of membrane fatty acid composition on peroxidation processes in rat-liver S9 fractions. Lipid peroxidation may be expected to affect enzyme activity and cofactors of importance for the performance of the Salmonella Mutagenicity Test, as well as to contribute to the formation of chemically reactive degradation products that are mutagenic. Lipid peroxidation products were measured as derivatives of 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA). The amount of TBA-reactive compounds (TBA-C), formed during incubation of S9 fractions from rats fed a diet containing sunflower-seed oil, was 8 times higher than that produced in S9 fractions prepared from rats fed diets containing coconut oil or hydrogenated lard as their only sources of fat. S9 fractions from livers of Aroclor 1254 treated rats showed a marked increase in peroxidation yields for all 3 dietary groups investigated as compared to S9 fractions from non-induced animals. The coconut oil and hydrogenated lard dietary groups showed a 13-fold increase in the yield of TBA-reactive material, while a 2-fold increase was found for the sunflower-seed oil group. The variations in the glutathione (GSH) levels and the degradation of unsaturated fatty acids were also studied in response to Aroclor 1254 treatment, fatty acid composition of the diets and incubation at 37 degrees C. Pronounced variations in the GSH levels were observed in response to Aroclor 1254 treatment and incubation conditions. A positive correlation between production of TBA-reactive material and degradation of unsaturated fatty acids was verified for S9 fractions from the coconut oil and hydrogenated lard dietary groups. Furthermore, the effect of Fe2+ on lipid peroxidation was studied in all 3 dietary groups. The rate of lipid peroxidation was increased in all groups but only the coconut oil and hydrogenated lard dietary groups showed increased total yields of TBA-C upon administration of Aroclor 1254 to rats. Lipid peroxidation processes cause chemical alterations in liver homogenates. Therefore, these effects ought to be considered both in the preparation and in the use of the S9 fraction in different test systems.  相似文献

The comparative effects of 10-20% coconut oil feeding on fatty acid composition of the main lipid classes of chick plasma have been studied with and without simultaneous treatment with dipyridamole in order to clarify the hypolipidemic role of this drug. Coconut oil drastically increased the percentages of lauric and myristic acids in free fatty acid and triacylglycerol fractions, whereas these changes were less pronounced in phospholipids and cholesterol esters. The percentage of arachidonic acid was higher in plasma phospholipids than in the other fractions and was significantly decreased by coconut oil feeding. Linoleic acid, the main fatty acid of cholesterol esters, was drastically increased by coconut oil feeding. Changes induced by the simultaneous administration of dipyridamole were more pronounced in the phospholipids and cholesterol esters than in the other fractions. The fall observed in linoleic acid levels after dipyridamole treatment may be of interest for a lower production of its derived eicosanoids, especially in plasma phospholipids and cholesterol esters.  相似文献
