The effects of foraging ants on arboreal insect herbivores in an undisturbed woodland savanna 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
ABSTRACT.
- 1 A comparison was made of the insect fauna on paired Terminalia sericea, Burkea africana and Ochna pulchra trees; one tree in each pair was treated with Formex® to exclude ants from the canopy, and the other was designated the control.
- 2 Treatment with Formex banding to exclude ants did not influence plant phenology.
- 3 Pyrethrum knockdown samples from control trees had generally more insect individuals and insect species than samples from trees where ants were excluded.
- 4 Formex-treated trees had significantly less homopterous individuals and species than the control trees.
- 5 With the exception of ants and Homoptera, there was no difference in the insect guild composition and dominance ranking of various insect taxa, sampled by pyrethrum knockdown, between the control and Formex-treated trees.
- 6 T.sericea had significantly greater populations of both sessile and mobile Homoptera on the control trees than on the Formex-treated trees. A similar trend could be seen on B.africana. There were significantly more sessile homopterans on the control trees of O.pulchra than on the Formex-treated trees. Low numbers of mobile Homoptera were recorded on both control and Formex-treated O.pulchra trees, and numbers on control trees were fewer in comparison to numbers of mobile Homoptera on control T.sericea and B.africana trees.
- 7 It is concluded that the ants have similar effects on the insect communities of trees in a natural, undisturbed savanna as has been demonstrated on trees in agro-ecosystems, and on plants that are structurally adapted for mutualistic associations with ants.
- 8 Although slight, leaf damage by some leaf-feeding insects was greater on trees where ants had been excluded than on control trees that supported foraging ant populations.

1. Fire ants naturally invade some undisturbed ecosystems of high conservation value and may negatively impact co‐occurring ants. 2. Over 3 years, fire ants were added and removed from a longleaf pine savanna ecosystem that naturally supports a low density of fire ants. Impacts on co‐occurring ants were monitored using pitfall traps. 3. Treatments resulted in significant differences in average fire ant abundance across all plots only in the first year of the experiment. Fire ants had little discernible impact. The abundance and species richness of co‐occurring ants in removal plots never differed from unmanipulated control plots. The abundance of co‐occurring ants was very slightly lower and ant species richness was slightly higher where Solenopsis invicta Buren colonies were added, but neither contrast was significant. 4. The poor conditions in this habitat for many native ants may explain this outcome. More broadly, the impact of fire ants on ant assemblages still appears to be secondary and largely a consequence of human impacts on the environment. 相似文献

A survey of two Amazonian melastome ant‐plants, Maieta guianensis and Tococa bullifera, revealed a significant difference in plant size according to the species of ant inhabiting the plant. Plants with Crematogaster laevis, on average, were smaller than those with Pheidole minutula (in M. guianensis) and those with Azteca sp. (in T. bullifera). There is no evidence that these patterns were due either to the deterministic replacement of C. laevis by another ant species during host‐plant ontogeny or to a habitat effect on plant growth rates coupled with colony survival. More likely, the smaller size of C. laevis plants can be explained by its effects on host‐plant performance. Plants with C. laevis lost their associated ant colonies more frequently than plants with P. minutula and Azteca sp. Plants that lost their C. laevis either died, or more commonly, were severely defoliated. Defoliated plants, once sprouted, tended to become recolonized, but such recolonizations were not deterministic so as to favor one species over another. Plants with C. laevis showed similar, or only slightly greater, standing levels of herbivory than plants with P. minutula or Azteca sp. This suggests that when C. laevis is present, it confers some degree of protection to its hosts. It was found that early in colony development, queens of C. laevis moved off their host plants to build satellite nests in dead twigs on the ground, a behavior not seen in the other two species and one that possibly renders colonies more vulnerable to mortality from predation, flooding, or nest decay. Comparable 815N values in C. laevis and P. minutula indicate that the two species are equally dependent on food supplied by the host plant. 相似文献

Interactive response of herbivores,soils and vegetation to annual burning in a South African savanna
Abstract Despite decades of research, the primary factors determining savanna structure remain elusive – a conundrum termed ‘the savanna problem’. After 47 years of annual burning in Terminalia woodland and Acacia/Combretum savanna on sandy, granite‐derived soils in the southern Kruger National Park, South Africa, a dense cover of trees and shrubs persists on some burnt plots and is largely absent from others. We postulated that intense browsing pressure by antelope and other herbivores prevents recruitment of trees in burnt plots and that herbivores concentrate on plots that are richest in nutrients. Herbivore abundance did not show a relationship with soil macronutrients and we consequently investigated micronutrient status. The reduction in tree cover as a result of annual burning was positively correlated with mass of herbivores (15–1500 kg) (r 2 = 0.61, n = 8). This index of herbivore abundance was in turn positively correlated with total Zn (r 2 = 0.64, n = 8). Other indices of herbivore abundance showed significant relationships with total clay content and total Mn. We suggest that herbivores concentrate on sites with greater clay content (possibly due to a greater availability of micronutrients), and that tree cover can remain relatively dense under a regime of annual burning if browsing pressure is not intense. The long‐term burn experiments in the Kruger National Park savanna provide a platform for unravelling the savanna problem. Determining possible interactions between soil properties, herbivory and fire is a step in this direction. 相似文献

1. The fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is a globally distributed invasive ant that is largely restricted to disturbed habitats in its introduced range. For more than half a century, biologists have believed its success results from superior competitive abilities relative to native ant species, as well as an escape from their natural enemies. 2. We used large volumes of hot water to kill fire ant colonies, and only fire ant colonies, on experimental plots in pastures, and found that populations and diversity of co-occurring ants did not subsequently increase. 3. These results are contrary to classical predictions and indicate that S. invicta is not a superior competitor that suppresses native ants, and that the low diversity and abundance of native ants in degraded ecosystems does not result from interaction with fire ants. Instead, other factors such as prior disturbance and recruitment limitation may be the primary limiting factors for native species in these habitats. 相似文献

Fire is an important determinant of many aspects of savanna ecosystem structure and function. However, relatively little is known about the effects of fire on faunal biodiversity in savannas. We conducted a short‐term study to examine the effects of a replicated experimental burn on bird diversity and abundance in savanna habitat of central Kenya. Twenty‐two months after the burn, Shannon diversity of birds was 32% higher on plots that had been burned compared with paired control plots. We observed no significant effects of burning on total bird abundance or species richness. Several families of birds were found only on plots that had been burned; one species, the rattling cisticola (Cisticola chiniana), was found only on unburned plots. Shrub canopy area was negatively correlated with bird diversity on each plot, and highly correlated with grass height and the abundance of orthopterans. Our results suggest that the highest landscape‐level bird diversity might be obtained through a mosaic of burned and unburned patches. This is also most likely to approximate the historical state of bird diversity in this habitat, because patchy fires have been an important natural disturbance in tropical ecosystems for millennia. 相似文献

Aim To examine the extent to which succession from tropical savanna to rain forest in the long‐term absence of fire is matched by successional changes in ant communities. This is done by describing ant community responses to 23 years of fire exclusion in a northern Australian tropical savanna, with a particular focus on the extent of colonization by specialist rain forest taxa. Location Solar Village, near Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory. Methods Ants were sampled within 12 plots located inside (‘unburnt’– protected from fire for 23 years) and outside (burnt every 1–2 years) Solar Village in ridge and slope habitat dominated by Eucalyptus spp. The litter, ground‐foraging and arboreal faunas were sampled separately, using Berlese funnels, unbaited pitfall traps and baited pitfall traps attached to tree trunks, respectively. Each species was assigned a forest‐association score ranging from 0 (open savanna species) to 3 (specialist forest species) based on their known habitat preferences in the region. Results A total of 85 ant species from 35 genera were recorded, with multivariate analysis demonstrating distinct litter, ground and arboreal communities. Ant communities also varied substantially with topographic position, which interacted strongly with fire exclusion. A total of 72 species were recorded in burnt habitat, compared with only 45 in unburnt, and the number of ant species records was also about twice as high in burnt compared with unburnt habitat. Fire exclusion has resulted in a dramatic increase in forest‐associated taxa (those occurring in forest and denser, but rarely open, savanna), with such species representing 51% of species records in unburnt habitat compared with 19% in burnt. However, only five specialist forest species were recorded, representing < 1% of total ant records. Main conclusions Fire exclusion at Solar Village has markedly increased the prevalence of forest‐associated ant species, but has led to only very minor incursions by specialist rain forest ant taxa. Aggression bioassays were used to investigate nestmate recognition in polygyne laboratory colonies of the imported fire ant, Solenopsis invictaBuren. Unlike workers from polygyne field colonies, laboratory-maintained (>10 weeks) workers exhibited well-developed nestmate recognition. As in monogyne colonies of this species, both heritable and environmentally acquired (diet) odors provided recognition cues and were roughly additive in their effect. Within diet treatments, polygyne colonies responded in a graded fashion to polygyne conspecifics, monogyne conspecifics, and heterospecifics (S. richteri Forel),thus suggesting incipient genetic divergence between the two S. invictasocial forms. Hypotheses to account for the acute intraspecific discrimination observed in the laboratory are presented. Empirical testing of these hypotheses will illuminate ecological constraints and proximate mechanisms underlying the reduced intercolony discrimination associated with natural polygyne colonies of this and other ant species. 相似文献

Scale‐dependency of pattern and process is well‐understood for many ecological communities; however, the influence of spatial scale (sampling grain) in detecting temporal change in communities is less well‐understood. The temperate lowland heathlands of south‐east Australia are one of the most fire‐prone ecosystems on earth. Despite the extensive literature documenting the effect of time since fire on heathlands, we know little about how sampling grain influences trends in vegetation variables over time, and whether these trends are scale‐dependent. Using 3500 ha of heathland in the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park, south‐east Australia, we investigated how above‐ground species composition and diversity, and trends in these variables with increasing time since fire, were influenced by sampling grain (1 m2, 10 m2, 100 m2, 900 m2, 1 ha, 4 ha). Sampling grain influenced patterns detected in vegetation variables and in some instances, significantly affected their relationship with time since fire. Richness decreased with time since fire, with mean richness decreasing at three of the four grains, while total richness decreased at half of the sampled grains. Evenness (J) decreased with increasing time since fire for all grains except 1 m2. The decline in diversity (H) with time since fire appeared to be independent of scale, as all grains decreased significantly with increasing time since fire. Community heterogeneity demonstrated a weak response to time since fire across most grains. Changes in composition among young (0–6 years since fire), intermediate (9–19 years) and old (23–27 years) sites were dependent on sampling grain, with all grains exhibiting significant differences in composition, apart from the 1 m2 grain and the 100 m2 grain (presence/absence data). Overall, species composition, richness, evenness, diversity and community heterogeneity were dependent on the scale at which the vegetation was sampled. In addition, trends in many of these vegetation variables with increasing time since fire were scale‐dependent. Aim Saevissima group fire ants, Solenopsis richteri and S. invicta, have become serious pests when introduced from Argentina and Brazil to other continents. In South America, Solenopsis are distributed across a great variety of habitats and climates. In North America, S. invicta, introduced free of phorids, now ranges from coast to coast in the south. Success in introducing particular Pseudacteon as agents for the biological control of fire ants has varied across climatic zones. We aimed at assembling all the information about fire ant phorids from Argentina and Brazil, to estimate their richness and geographical ranges, to perform a climatic analysis for these distributions, to define groups and climate‐based communities, and to test and elucidate Rapoport's biogeographical rule. Location Argentina and Brazil (South America). Methods From field and museum collections and historical records, we developed a database of fire ant‐specific phorids throughout their known geographical range. A total of 123 sites with values for 15 climatic variables were mapped between 10° and 38° SL and between 35° and 65° C WL for the presence/absence of phorids. We calculated species richness across all sites combined, and for each phytogeographical region, using rarefaction curves, and ICE and Mmean estimators. We calculated mid‐latitudinal points, geographical ranges and areas for each species. The correlation between mid‐latitudinal point and ranges/areas was tested against a null model generated from the randomization of the raw distributional data. We used several types of multivariate analyses to distinguish groups of phorids by phytogeographical regions, hosts and climate, to find gradients of climate throughout the studied area, to define phorid communities in terms of their relationships with gradients of climate, and to test a mechanism for Rapoport's rule. Results Richness estimations using ICE and Mmean estimators were similar or higher than the observed values depending on the phytogeographical region. Cluster multivariate analyses based on climatic, phytogeographic and host data revealed distinct groupings of Pseudacton. The ‘cerrado’ group was confined to tropical savanna areas. A more ‘widespread’ group included ‘Chaco’ and ‘Maritime’ subgroups defined by their respective association with extreme temperatures or precipitation. Ordination multivariate analyses showed (1) two climatic gradients throughout the study area: one of temperature and the other of precipitation, and (2) that climatic variables significantly explained the observed assemblages of phorids. Positive and negative signs of the eigenvalues from the main axes of a canonical correspondence analysis allowed us to define eight communities whose geographical distribution resembled that of phytogeographical regions. We found a significant and positive correlation between geographical areas and mid latitudinal points, and furthermore, the Mantel test based on climatic variables suggested a mechanism for Rapoport's rule applying in the case of Pseudacteon. Main conclusions Pseudacteon species with greater mid‐latitudinal points occupy broader geographical areas and confront more stressful environmental conditions. Because the composition of Pseudacteon communities is largely determined by climatic variables, the correspondence between climates at sites of origin vs. sites of release should be an important consideration in choosing specific phorids for biocontrol efforts. 相似文献

The social parasite ant Solenopsis daguerrei infests colonies of several mound-building fire ant species. Twenty-four microsatellite markers were isolated from a repeat-enriched genomic library of S. daguerrei. Eleven loci were polymorphic in this ant with two to six alleles per locus. Expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.0222 to 0.7940 among loci. Most microsatellites amplified successfully across the 11 Solenopsis species tested and will be useful for evolutionary genetic studies in this diverse ant group. 相似文献

Fire is an important part of many Australian ecosystems, and determining how it affects different vegetation communities and associated fauna is of particular interest to land managers. Here, we report on a study that used sites established during a 39‐year fire experiment in coastal heathland in southeastern Queensland to compare arthropod abundance and vegetation in 1.5–2.6 ha sites that were (i) long unburnt, (ii) burnt every 5 years and (iii) burnt every 3 years. We found that the abundance of ants was more than four times higher in the frequently burnt sites compared to long unburnt sits. Moreover, long unburnt sites had greater dominance of Xanthorrhoea johnsonii and Caustis recurvata, whereas burnt sites had greater cover of Lomandra filiformis, Leucopogon margarodes and Leucopogon leptospermoides. Our findings show that frequent fire can alter vegetation structure and composition, and this is matched by an increase in the relative dominance of ants in the arthropod community. 相似文献
