In August 1983, a study on parasites, diseases, and health status was conducted on sympatric populations of fallow deer (Dama dama) and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from Land Between The Lakes, Lyon and Trigg counties, Kentucky. Five adult deer of each species were studied. White-tailed deer had antibodies to epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) virus and Leptospira interogans serovariety icterohemorrhagiae, and fallow deer had antibodies to bluetongue and EHD viruses. Serologic tests for bovine virus diarrhea virus, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus, parainfluenza3 virus, and Brucella spp. were negative. One white-tailed deer had an infectious cutaneous fibroma, and one fallow deer had pulmonary mucormycosis. White-tailed deer harbored 16 species of parasites, all of which are considered typical of the parasite fauna of this host in the southeastern United States. Fallow deer harbored nine species of parasites, including eight species known to occur in white-tailed deer on the area and one species (Spiculopteragia assymmetrica) that is not. All fallow deer had inflammatory lesions in the spinal cord and/or brain that were attributed to prior infection with meningeal worm (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis), indicating that P. tenuis infections are not always fatal for this species. The apparent high rate of exposure of Land Between The Lakes fallow deer to P. tenuis without a resultant high rate of clinical cerebrospinal parelaphostrongylosis is hypothesized to be due to a low prevalence and intensity of P. tenuis, partial innate resistance of fallow deer, and acquired immunity.  相似文献

We investigated the origins of the fallow deer (Dama dama dama) of Rhodes by both morphological and molecular means. Our results show that these deer have homogeneous phenotypic patterns. All specimens fell within the common colour coat variety typical of the wild form. The Rhodian deer appear to be rather small, especially when compared with specimens from central and northern Europe. We then sequenced the HVR-I of 13 deer from Rhodes and compared these sequences with other 31 samples obtained from different European and Anatolian populations of fallow deer. Out of 44 sequences, 23 haploypes were found. When compared to the Turkish and Italian populations, the population of Rhodes revealed lower values of within population genetic diversity. The fallow deer from Rhodes are characterized by an 80-bp mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) insertion not found elsewhere. As a consequence, all the deer from Rhodes form a tight cluster, distinct from all other fallow deer populations. This uniqueness makes the conservation and management of the Rhodian population particularly urgent.  相似文献

The genetic potential of the red and fallow deer populations in Hungary is well known. Conserving the variability in this excellent genetic material for game preservation is one of our most important task. The aim of the present pilot study was to test the logistical steps of a sperm processing and storing system in which deer sperm can be stored at a level that meets quality standards accepted for domestic animals. Moreover, two different semen extenders, commercially used for freezing bull semen, were compared from the viewpoint of applicability to freeze fallow deer sperm. Sperm was collected from epididymes of eight red stags (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus) and six fallow bucks (Dama dama) during the rutting season. Red deer samples were washed in Triladyl extender, while fallow deer samples were split and processed in Triladyl or Bioxcell extender. In the samples, which had a shorter time interval between the death of the animal and the sperm collection, the percentage of viable spermatozoa with intact acrosome was typically higher.  相似文献

Due to the lack of molecular research conducted, little is known about Sarcocystis species diversity in the fallow deer (Dama dama). Until now, Sarcocystis jorrini and Sarcocystis morae were described to form sarcocysts in the muscles of this host. In the present study diaphragm muscle samples of free-ranging fallow deer from Lithuania were investigated for Sarcocystis species. Sarcocysts were detected in 39 out of 48 (81.3%) fallow deer examined. Under a light microscope two types of sarcocysts having hair-like and finger-like protrusions were observed. Based on DNA sequence analysis of cox1 and 18S rDNA, two species, S. morae and Sarcocystis entzerothi were identified. In prior studies, the latter species was only detected in Lithuanian roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and in sika deer (Cervus nippon). The haplotype network of S. morae sequences specified close relationships between haplotypes found in the same country. According to current knowledge, the fallow deer is characterised by low Sarcocystis species richness as compared with other cervid species from Europe.  相似文献

The analysis of the relationships between population density and habitat features is important to evaluate the ecological needs of a species, its potential impact on ecosystems and its interspecific interactions. We analysed the spatial variation of roe deer Capreolus capreolus and fallow deer Dama dama densities in a Mediterranean area in summer 2007 and winter 2007/2008. Previous research has shown that fallow deer can actively displace and exclude roe deer from natural feeding sites. Here we show that both species have the greatest densities in ecotone habitats between wood and open fields (abandoned olive groves and pastures), but with contrasting geographic patterns. The fallow deer showed the greatest densities in the central northern part of the study area near to local historical release sites. The densities of roe deer were great where fallow deer were rare and low where fallow deer were abundant. Spatial overlap was great at the habitat scale, indicating a high potential for competition, but was low at the plot scale, suggesting that partitioning of space occurred at a fine scale. Supporting great numbers of deer, the ecotone areas are crucial for the management of ecosystems. We suggest that roe deer avoid areas with great densities of fallow deer and that interspecific interference from the latter affects the density and distribution of the former both at a fine and at a large scale.  相似文献

A study of 11 enzyme systems in blood samples of Cervus dama, C. elaphus, C. nippon and hybrids C. elaphus X nippon has revealed an erythrocyte 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase polymorphism in the hybrid populations. Genetic analysis suggests that this enzyme is controlled by one gene locus with two codominant alleles, one specific for pure Japanese sika deer, the other for pure red deer as well as for fallow deer, while both alleles have been found in the red X sika hybrids.  相似文献

We monitored a herd of fallow deer (Dama dama) for evidence of prion infection for 7 yr by periodic postmortem examination of animals from the herd. The fallow deer were exposed to the chronic wasting disease (CWD) agent from mule deer by living in a paddock considered contaminated with infectivity from its history of housing CWD infected deer and, after the first year of the study, by comingling with infected mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). At least 8 of 12 mule deer serving as sentinels for prion transmission and 25 additional mule deer serving as sources of infectivity developed clinical CWD or were otherwise confirmed to be infected with CWD via lymphoid tissue immunohistochemistry (IHC). In contrast, none of the 41 exposed fallow deer showed clinical signs suggestive of CWD, IHC staining of disease-associated prion in lymphoid or brain tissues, or evidence of spongiform degeneration in sections of brain stem at the level of the obex when sampled 18 mo to 7 yr after entering the mule deer paddock. The absence of clinical disease and negative IHC results in fallow deer housed in the same contaminated paddock for up to 7 yr and almost continuously exposed to CWD-infected mule deer for up to 6 yr suggests a species barrier or other form of resistance preventing fallow deer infection by the CWD agent or delaying progression of the disease in this species.  相似文献

Population fluctuations in ungulates are driven by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Available information, however, mainly refers to arctic, temperate and African ungulate populations, while the dynamics of Mediterranean species, exposed to a milder climate, is known to a much lesser extent. Here we studied the population dynamics of four wild ungulate species in the Castelporziano Preserve near Rome, Italy, as obtained from detailed bag counts from hunting drives during the period 1878–1986: the Italian roe deer Capreolus capreolus italicus, the Maremma wild boar Sus scrofa majori (both endemic to Italy), the native red deer Cervus elaphus, and the alien fallow deer Dama dama. We also considered the effects of the presence of another alien ungulate, the nilgai Boselaphus tragocamelus. This ungulate community experienced an accidental ‘removal experiment’ when, during World War II, red deer and nilgai were exterminated. This event and the length of the time series allowed us to test two main hypotheses: 1) that the complexity level of the ungulate community affects the strength of intra‐ and inter‐specific competition; and 2) that in Mediterranean environments intra‐ and inter‐specific interactions are stronger than climate forcing. Statistical methods ranged from state‐space‐modelling, GLM analysis and structural equation models. The results indicated that direct intra‐specific density dependence played a relevant role for all species, and was stronger after the removal. A complex pattern of species interactions was however revealed; fallow deer had a negative effect on roe deer population, while roe deer had an apparent positive effect on red deer and wild boar, possibly mediated by environmental factors. Nilgai appeared to facilitate all deer species. The results of the analysis also confirmed that at present climate appears to play a minor role with respect to density dependence; however, the increasing aridity of the Mediterranean area could change this picture in coming decades.  相似文献

In the last years, new approaches use scats analysis in ecological studies, like gas chromatographic techniques, has been developed. The aim of this study is to use VOCs (volatile organic compounds) released from scats to distinguish three mammal species: the ungulates red and fallow deer and the carnivore Eurasian otter through the application of SPME/GC × GC–ToFMS. This chromatographic technique has never been used in ecological studies. Chromatogram contour plot was effective in distinguishing between the carnivore Eurasian otter and the two ungulates. Additionally, a subset of 21 selected compounds, including hydrocarbons, ketones, aldehydes, alcohols and terpenes, allowed a distinction between Eurasian otter, red deer and fallow deer. Eurasian otter scats were characterized mainly by the presence of aldehydes that may arise from oxidative degradation of unsaturated fatty acids present in fish species, included in their diet. Red deer volatile profile is characterized by terpenes compounds, presumably related with diet, while fallow deer achieved also chemical communication markers: 2-propanone and hexane. The scat volatile profiles provide information that explains their odour and also the type of diet (herbivorous or carnivorous) and intra-specific communication through chemical signals. Being able to distinguish species using the proposed methodology is an asset to wildlife ecology and management studies.  相似文献

Lungs of 102 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 136 moose (Alces alces), 68 fallow deer (Dama dama), and six red deer (Cervus elaphus) were examined during hunting seasons from 16 September 1997 to 1 March 2000. The aim was to determine the species composition and prevalence of Dictyocaulus lungworms in these hosts in Sweden. Worms were identified following polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA (ITS2), followed by hybridization with four species-specific oligonucleotides. In addition, 50 lungworms from five reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) from Norway were similarly analyzed. A total of 399 worms were recovered and analyzed representing a range of 29-128 worms per host species. All specimens from roe deer were identified as Dictyocaulus capreolus, whereas those from red deer and reindeer were identical with D. eckerti. From moose, 73 (81.1%) of the worms were identified as D. capreolus whereas 17 (18.9%) were D. eckerti. The ITS2 sequence of fallow deer lungworms differed significantly when compared with the ITS2 of D. viviparus, D. capreolus, and D. eckerti. This indicated that fallow deer in Sweden may be infected with a new genotype of Dictyocaulus spp. Consequently, a specific probe designed for the ITS2 from this Dictyocaulus sp. hybridized exclusively with samples from lungworms of fallow deer. Interestingly, no D. viviparus were found in any of these hosts. The prevalence of infection in each host was as follows: D. capreolus in roe deer (14.7%) and moose (10.6%); D. eckerti in moose (0.7%) and red deer (33.3%); and Dictyocaulus sp. in fallow deer (10.3%). Regardless of lungworm species, the overall prevalence of Dictyocaulus spp. in these hosts was 12.2%. Prevalence between male and female animals and among the different age groups did not differ significantly. Finally an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) specific for patent D. viviparus infection in cattle was utilized to analyze lung tissue fluids from infected animals. All samples from roe deer, red deer, and fallow deer were negative in the ELISA. However, three out of twelve (25%) samples from moose and 17 of 40 (43%) samples from cattle were positive. This indicated that moose anti-D. capreolus antibodies recognized the D. viviparus antigen and that anti-cattle immunoglobulin cross-reacted with moose antibodies.  相似文献

The roe deer of Mediterranean habitats in the central and southern parts of Italy has recently been recognised as a distinct subspecies, Capreolus capreolus italicus . A population of this endangered subspecies has been monitored in the Preserve of Castelporziano, near Rome, since 1988. We observed an abrupt population decline in 2000, which may severely threaten the sustainability of this population. We evaluated the hypothesis that competition by fallow deer may be a principal cause of this decline. By a new and innovative methodology, we modelled the spatial distribution of fallow deer density (FDD) in the study area to show that 1) habitat quality for roe deer was an inverse function of FDD, 2) habitat apportionment between fallow and roe deer increased as a function of FDD and – by applying structural equation modelling – 3) FDD was superior to habitat composition in explaining observed variations in home range size and probably in habitat quality for roe deer. This analysis is the first to document that inter-specific competition may influence the spatial behaviour of a deer species leading to poor phenotypic performance in the inferior competitor. We conclude that the conservation of this relict population would benefit by reducing fallow deer numbers at Castelporziano and from other measures aimed to decrease the level of inter-specific competition.  相似文献

A frozen stabilate was produced from Theileria cervi sporozoites in salivary glands of adult Amblyomma americanum. The stabilate was inoculated into three fallow deer (Cervus dama) and two white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Following inoculation, the white-tailed deer developed parasitemias as determined by blood smear examination at 11 and 13 days postexposure. Repeat examination of blood from the three fallow deer for 30 days postexposure failed to reveal observable piro-plasms. These findings indicate that fallow deer are not as susceptible to the Theileria cervi found in white-tailed deer from North America. Thus, there are some questions regarding the taxonomic position of this organism.  相似文献

The function of inter-specific interactions in large herbivore assemblies is under debate. We have studied inter-specific interactions between roe and fallow deer on pastures, to assess whether competition between these Cervidae occurs through behavioural interference. Roe were displaced by fallow deer (i.e. the former moved away from the latter at a distance of >50 m) in 83% of cases (N = 127). Ninety-four percentage (N = 83) of displacement events occurred while roe deer were feeding; in 50% of these cases (N = 78), roe stopped grazing and left the feeding ground. Even when fallow deer did not show any sign of direct aggression to roe, these moved away from fallow in 72% of cases (N = 127). Vigilance rate was significantly greater in roe than in fallow deer, irrespectively of the presence of the other species. When roe and fallow deer grazed within 50 m from each other, vigilance rate increased significantly in roe, but not in fallow deer. Roe deer, in a group, were significantly more tolerant of the presence of fallow deer (even in group), than when solitary. Fallow deer seemed to be able to exclude roe deer from feeding sites through behavioural intolerance.  相似文献

European fallow deer are an introduced species classified as partly protected wildlife in Tasmania, Australia. Current management practices are primarily governed under the Quality Deer Management regime, in which animals are harvested during designated hunting seasons. Among populations, prominent morphological differences have been reported; however, the genetic relationship of these populations has until now been poorly understood. Representative animals were sampled from three key areas across their range and genotyped at ten polymorphic microsatellite loci to investigate genetic diversity, population structure, and genetic bottlenecks. Allelic richness was low in all three populations and ranged between 2.20 and 2.49 alleles/locus. A genetic bottleneck was detected in two of the three populations (P < 0.001). Population differentiation was evident between Lake Echo and Benham (q = 0.122; P < 0.001) and Benham and Connorville (q = 0.110; P < 0.001), but not between Lake Echo and Connorville (q = 0.0235), with individuals being identified as belonging to two genetic clusters. The pattern of population differentiation from the three study populations suggests that deer from the western region of their range are genetically distinct to those from the eastern region. This correlates with morphological variation within Tasmanian fallow deer, in which differences between the regions maybe attributable to geographical barriers.  相似文献

1. Blood samples were obtained from fallow deer (Dama dama) and red deer (Cervus elaphus). Basic haematology, red cell enzymes, and metabolic intermediates and the glycolytic rate of the red cells incubated with different substrates were measured. 2. The major findings were (i) the activity of glucose phosphate isomerase was notably high in the red blood cells of the red deer; (ii) red deer cells also utilized adenosine more efficiently than those of fallow deer and (iii) red cells of both species utilized galactose more efficiently than other species of ruminants.  相似文献

Immunocontraceptives can control growth in wild and captive populations; however, in doing so, they should not disrupt species‐typical behavior patterns. The presence of treated females could disrupt social interactions in a population; yet, few studies have examined effects of immunocontraception on behavior. The goal of this project was to determine whether behavior in a fallow deer (Dama dama) population vaccinated with porcine anti‐zona pellucida (pZP)‐immunocontraceptives differed from behavior in a population of unvaccinated deer. We predicted that pZP‐treated females would spend a higher percentage of time exhibiting mating and dominance behavior than nontreated females, and that males interacting with pZP‐treated females would spend a higher percentage of time demonstrating mating and aggressive behavior than males interacting with nontreated females. We recorded activity budgets of males and females in two fallow deer populations, one pZP‐treated and the other untreated, before, during, and after rut. Females did not differ in time spent displaying mating or dominance behavior compared to nontreated females. Males coexisting with nontreated females spent more time exhibiting aggressive behavior during rut than males living with pZP‐treated females, but males did not differ in time spent in mating behavior. Thus, immunocontraception did not seem to affect behavior adversely. However, sample sizes, living conditions, and sex ratios may have affected the results. Given these limitations, future research is needed to confirm our findings. Zoo Biol 27:49–61, 2008. © 2007 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Samples of rumen contents from 33 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), 31 axis deer (Axis axis), 26 sika deer (Cervus nippon), and 25 fallow deer (Dama dama) were collected from four study areas in central Texas. The geometric mean concentration of total protozoa was 50.2 x 10(4) per ml, with no differences between species (P > 0.36). White-tailed deer had a higher percentage of Entodinium and lower percentage of Diplodiniinae (P < 0.01) than the other deer species, which were not different from each other. Occurrence of Epidinium, Isotricha, and Dasytricha was sporadic and did not differ among deer species. Numerous new host records of protozoan species were observed: white-tailed deer--four; axis deer--five; sika deer--five; fallow deer--four. This brings the total number of protozoan species identified in each deer species to: white-tailed--eight; axis--12; sika--15; fallow--16. For all species combined, protozoan concentration were 7.5 to 11-fold higher (P < 0.01) from Area 4, which differed from the other three areas by having a stream that allowed deer to have free access to water. Criteria used for identification of medium-size Eudiplodinium species were evaluated.  相似文献

Measurement of faecal glucocorticoid metabolites is increasingly used as a non-invasive tool to examine disturbances in various domestic and wild animals. Because measurements of faecal glucocorticoid metabolites has previously never been reported in fallow deer, we determined 11,17-dioxoandrostanes (11,17-DOA), a group of cortisol metabolites, in the faeces of four fallow deer yearlings after an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) challenge or control saline injection by an 11-oxoaetiocholanolone enzyme immunoassay (EIA), to validate a method. A 2.9- to 4.3-fold increase in measured cortisol metabolites in challenged animals after approximately 22 h demonstrated the suitability of this group-specific EIA to monitor adrenocortical activity in respective deer species. To determine faecal cortisol metabolites in fallow deer from a Mediterranean habitat, we collected samples during a 1-year study at Veliki Brijuni Island. The study confirmed seasonal pattern of cortisol release in fallow deer. Higher 11,17-DOA concentrations (median; min–max) were determined for November (99; 50–2,035), March (112; 25–315) and May (92; 40–196 ng/g faeces). Significantly lower concentrations were measured during July (30; 10–195 ng/g faeces). This study indicates that the analysis of faecal glucocorticoid metabolites is a valuable non-invasive technique for monitoring adrenocortical activity in fallow deer. This, together with information about the seasonal pattern of glucocorticoid excretion, could help to improve fallow deer management and welfare, especially in the case of farmed and park animals.  相似文献

This study uses data from forty-nine 20 m × 20 m permanent plots measured in 1976, 1982, 1989 and 1997-2002 in Wakatipu Forest, western Otago. We relate changes in red (Nothofagus fusca), silver (Nothofagus menziesii) and mountain beech (Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides) forest vegetation to the presence of fallow deer (Dama dama). Vegetation composition is likely to have been altered prior to plot establishment, and results show that there was little change in vegetation composition during the study. There are some signs of fallow deer reducing silver beech seedling abundance at some plots, but most beech stands appear to be in the late phase of development and undergoing self thinning, so are probably not immediately vulnerable to suppression of canopy regeneration. In the future, widespread disturbance is likely to release plants in the understorey from competition for light and nutrients, and at that stage fallow deer browsing of beech species may be able to alter successional pathways more than has occurred over the past two decades. Seedling and sapling density of the palatable Griselinia littoralis (broadleaf) was probably insufficient to ensure successful regeneration. Comparisons of seedling densities with other mixed beech forests throughout New Zealand suggest that fallow deer density will need to be nearly zero in Wakatipu Forest before regeneration of all palatable subcanopy hardwood species is assured.  相似文献

  • 1 Throughout Europe, the range of many deer species is expanding. We provide current distribution maps for red deer Cervus elaphus, sika Cervus nippon, fallow deer Dama dama and muntjac deer Muntiacus sp. in Ireland, and estimates of range expansion rates for red deer, sika and fallow deer.
  • 2 There was a considerable expansion in the ranges of red deer, sika and fallow deer between 1978 and 2008. The compound annual rate of expansion was 7% for red deer, 5% for sika and 3% for fallow deer. The total range increase was 565% for red deer, 353% for sika and 174% for fallow deer. The potential implications of these expansions are discussed.
  • 3 There are unknown numbers of red‐sika hybrid deer in some parts of Ireland. Range expansion is likely to lead to further hybridizations with implications for the genetic integrity of deer stocks.
  • 4 Sightings of free‐roaming muntjac deer were first recorded in 2007. The distribution of confirmed sightings of single and multiple animals in the eastern region of Ireland suggests multiple releases.
  • 5 Deer are already impacting on both the economic and biodiversity values of habitats in Ireland, where, at present, no sustainable deer management policy exists.
