We recently demonstrated that a supine position causes a decrease in olfactory sensitivity compared with an upright position. We pursued that initial finding in 3 separate experiments in which we explored the extent of, and mechanism underlying, this phenomenon. In Experiment 1, we replicated the decrease in olfactory sensitivity when in a supine compared with an upright position. In Experiment 2, we measured body position-dependent shifts in physiological variables and sniff measures while smelling suprathreshold odorants and performing a perithreshold odor intensity discrimination task. Olfactory performances were reduced while supine. However, no relationships between the shift in olfactory performances and either the physiological variables or sniff measures were found. In Experiment 3, we determined that there were no position-dependent shifts in ability to discriminate or identify suprathreshold odors or rate them for pleasantness, intensity, or familiarity. However, a drop in scores was observed, and performance was slowed, on a cognitive skill while supine. These results demonstrate a body position-dependent shift in olfactory sensitivity only for perithreshold odors that appears to be mediated by cognitive rather than physiological factors. Implications for olfactory imaging studies are discussed.  相似文献

The impact of natural odors on affective states in humans   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Laboratory studies have shown a significant influence of certain fragrances on affective as well as cognitive states in humans. The aim of the current study was to measure the relationship between complex, natural odors and affective states, that is, calmness, alertness, and mood, in the field. In 4 experiments, the emotional impact, intensity, and hedonics of complex, natural plant odors were assessed in 32 healthy human subjects and compared with control conditions involving a similar outdoor environment without the tested fragrant plants. In all experiments, the selected fragrances were evaluated as more intense than the odors in the control conditions but pleasantness ratings differed only in 2 of the 4 experiments. The fragrances improved subjective ratings of calmness, alertness, and mood depending on the sequence of the conditions but independent of visual features of the environment. In contrast, a fifth experiment which tested the influence of natural and artificial pleasant odors and an artificial unpleasant odor on calmness, alertness, and mood in 22 subjects showed that the unpleasant odor impaired these affective states in humans independent of the order of presentation. On the other hand, no effects of the pleasant odors on mood and calmness were observed in this experiment.  相似文献

The influence of a thermogenic mixture of ephedrine- (1 mg/kg) caffeine (2.5 mg/kg) on cold tolerance was investigated in nine healthy young male subjects during two seminude exposures to cold air (3 h at 10 degrees C). The drug ingestion reduced the total drop in core, mean skin, and mean body temperatures (P less than 0.01), thus producing significantly warmer final core, mean skin, and mean body temperatures compared with the placebo ingestion. The drug ingestion increased the total 3-h energy expenditure by 18.6% compared with that of the placebo ingestion in the cold (P less than 0.01). By means of the nonprotein respiratory exchange ratio to calculate the rates of substrate oxidation, it was found that the drug ingestion increased carbohydrate oxidation by as much as 41.7% above that of the placebo (P less than 0.05). In contrast, the drug mixture had no significant influence on lipid or protein metabolism. The results demonstrate that the ingestion of an ephedrine-caffeine mixture improves cold tolerance in humans by significantly increasing body temperatures in the cold. These improvements were not caused by an increased conservation of heat but by a greater energy expenditure, which appears to be dependent on an enhanced carbohydrate utilization.  相似文献

After several decades of microbiological research has focused on pure cultures, synergistic effects between different types of microorganisms find increasing interest. Interspecies interactions between prokaryotic cells have been studied into depth mainly with respect to syntrophic cooperations involved in methanogenic degradation of electron-rich substrates such as fatty acids, alcohols, and aromatics. Partners involved in these processes have to run their metabolism at minimal energy increments, with only fractions of an ATP unit synthesized per substrate molecule metabolized, and their cooperation is intensified by close proximity of the partner cells. New examples of such syntrophic activities are anaerobic methane oxidation by presumably methanogenic and sulfate-reducing prokaryotes, and microbially mediated pyrite formation. Syntrophic relationships have also been discovered to be involved in the anaerobic metabolization of amino acids and sugars where energetical restrictions do not necessarily force the partner organisms into strict interdependencies. The most highly developed cooperative systems among prokaryotic cells appear to be the structurally organized phototrophic consortia of the Chlorochromatium and Pelochromatium type in which phototrophic and chemotrophic bacteria not only exchange metabolites but also interact at the level of growth coordination and tactic behaviour. To examine the muscle synergies of multi-directional postural control, we calculated the target-directed variance fraction (η) and net action direction of each muscle using the electromyogram-weighted averaging (EWA) method. Subjects stood barefoot on a force platform and maintained their posture by producing a center of pressure (COP) in twelve target directions. Surface electromyograms were recorded from 6 right-sided muscles: tibialis anterior (TA), soleus (SOL), lateral gastrocnemius (LG), medial gastrocnemius (MG), fibularis longus (FL), and gluteus medius (GM). η was calculated from COP with duration of 20-s, during which the COP was relatively constant. The EWA method was applied to the EMG and the two COP components to estimate the net action direction of each muscle. The results showed that η values in all directions did not cross the 0.8 threshold. This suggests that human postural control is achieved by synergistic co-activation. The EWA revealed that the net action directions of TA, SOL, LG, MG, and GM were 277.6°, 71.1°, 87.7°, 94.0°, and 2.2°, respectively. This suggests that postural maintenance by muscle synergy can be attributed to the relevant muscles having various action directions. These results demonstrate that muscle synergies can be investigated using COP fluctuations.  相似文献

The influences of feedback and ascending and descending trial sequences on the ability of 135 college-aged subjects to detect phenyl ethyl alcohol odorant concentrations ranging from 10(-9) to 10(-5.5) v/v were examined in a two-alternative forced-choice test paradigm. At the highest concentrations, ascending trial sequences produced better performance than descending trial sequences; the reverse was true at the lowest concentrations. There was a tendency for feedback to improve performance marginally at the lowest two odorant concentrations presented. In the region associated with a traditional detection threshold calculation (i.e. at the 75% performance point in a two-choice detection task), no influences of feedback or direction of trial sequence were apparent. These data indicate that the effects of explicit feedback and trial sequence direction depend upon the segment of the peri-threshold stimulus concentration continuum evaluated.  相似文献

We assessed the influence of different odors on detection of a sweet tastant, and the ability of imagined odors to elicit the same effects as perceived odors on taste perception. The tastant used was sucrose, and the two odorants were strawberry and ham. In the first experiment, participants either smelled or imagined one of two odors during taste detection tasks (between-subject design), whereas in the second one, subjects completed both the odor imagery and perception conditions with taste detection tasks (within-subject design). The effect was odorant-specific: detection of sucrose was significantly better when subjects smelled strawberry than when they smelled ham. Furthermore, imagined odors influenced taste perception in the same way as did perceived odors. We concluded that the odor-specific effect on taste perception is an authentic perceptual phenomenon. Our results also support the notion that odor-induced changes in taste perception are mediated centrally. Finally, our findings are in agreement with reports supporting the existence of odor imagery.  相似文献

Animal navigation is guided by multiple sensory cues. Here, we ask whether and how olfactory stimuli emanating from places other than the trained feeding site redirect the flight paths of honeybees. The flight trajectories of individual bees were registered using harmonic radar tracking. Sensory cues (compass direction, distance, visual cues en route and close to the feeding site) associated with the trained flight route dominated wayfinding, but a learned odorant carried by air flow induced excursions into the wind. These redirections were largely restricted to rather small deviations from the trained route (<60°, <200 m) and occurred only if the animal did not receive the trained odorant stimulus at the trained feeding site. Under certain conditions, larger excursions were observed. These findings are discussed in the context of odor guidance of honeybees over longer distances (>300 m from the hive).  相似文献

Background

The recording of olfactory and trigeminal chemosensory event-related potentials (ERPs) has been proposed as an objective and non-invasive technique to study the cortical processing of odors in humans. Until now, the responses have been characterized mainly using across-trial averaging in the time domain. Unfortunately, chemosensory ERPs, in particular, olfactory ERPs, exhibit a relatively low signal-to-noise ratio. Hence, although the technique is increasingly used in basic research as well as in clinical practice to evaluate people suffering from olfactory disorders, its current clinical relevance remains very limited. Here, we used a time-frequency analysis based on the wavelet transform to reveal EEG responses that are not strictly phase-locked to onset of the chemosensory stimulus. We hypothesized that this approach would significantly enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of the EEG responses to chemosensory stimulation because, as compared to conventional time-domain averaging, (1) it is less sensitive to temporal jitter and (2) it can reveal non phase-locked EEG responses such as event-related synchronization and desynchronization.

Methodology/Principal Findings

EEG responses to selective trigeminal and olfactory stimulation were recorded in 11 normosmic subjects. A Morlet wavelet was used to characterize the elicited responses in the time-frequency domain. We found that this approach markedly improved the signal-to-noise ratio of the obtained EEG responses, in particular, following olfactory stimulation. Furthermore, the approach allowed characterizing non phase-locked components that could not be identified using conventional time-domain averaging.

Conclusion/Significance

By providing a more robust and complete view of how odors are represented in the human brain, our approach could constitute the basis for a robust tool to study olfaction, both for basic research and clinicians.  相似文献

Selective feeding on large algae by copepods involves remotedetection of individual particles and subsequent active captureresponses In this study we use radiotracer experiments to quantifythe clearance rates of five coexisting freshwater copepods andto investigate the relative merits of the chemoreception andmechanoreception hypotheses of remote detection Tropocyclopsand three diaptomid copepods exhibited relatively high clearancerates when feeding on low concentrations of large algae, suggestingthat most previous studies with freshwater copepods have underestimatedmaximal clearance rates and the degree of size selectivity.All five species of copepods exihibited strong selection foran intermediate-sized flagellate (25 µm Cartena) or alarge-sized nonmotile alga (80 µ.m Pediastrum) over asmall-sized flagellate (6 µ.m Chlamydomonas). The weight-specificclearance rate for Tropocylops prasmus feeding on motile Cartena(271 ml mg1 h1) was about twice that of threediaptomid copepods and more than an order-of-magnitude higherthan the estimate for Epischura lacustris feeding on its preferredalga, Pediastrum Assuming that distance chemoreception (‘smell’)is important in remote detection, we predicted that the additionof high concentrations of ‘algal odors’ would obscureany chemical gradients emanating from individual algal cellsand would thereby hinder the remote detection and active captureof large algae Contrary to this hypothesis, the addition ofamino acids, sucrose, and algal extracts had no effect on theclearance rates and selectivity of Diaptomus birgei. Psychophysical studies of interactions between retronasal olfaction and taste have focused most often on the enhancement of tastes by odors, which has been attributed primarily to a response bias (i.e., halo dumping). Based upon preliminary evidence that retronasal odors could also be enhanced by taste, the present study measured both forms of enhancement using appropriate response categories. In the first experiment, subjects rated taste ("sweet," "sour," "salty," and "bitter") and odor ("other") intensity for aqueous samples of 3 tastants (sucrose, NaCl, and citric acid) and 3 odorants (vanillin, citral, and furaneol), both alone and in taste-odor mixtures. The results showed that sucrose, but not the other taste stimuli, significantly increased the perceived intensity of all 3 odors. Enhancement of tastes by odors was inconsistent and generally weaker than enhancement of odors by sucrose. A second experiment used a flavored beverage and a custard dessert to test whether the findings from the first experiment would hold for the perception of actual foods. Adding sucrose significantly enhanced the intensity of "cherry" and "vanilla" flavors, whereas adding vanillin did not significantly enhance the intensity of sweetness. It is proposed that enhancement of retronasal odors by a sweet stimulus results from an adaptive sensory mechanism that serves to increase the salience of the flavor of nutritive foods.  相似文献

UV-survival data are presented for haploid yeast strains carrying mutations in two or more rad genes. Some of these mutants are not, by themselves, very sensitive to UV-light but nevertheless show a strong synergistic interaction with other UV-sensitive mutants. It is proposed that such synergism arises when mutations block two repair pathways each acting upon a common substrate. Multiple-mutant strains have been used for exposing interactions between mutants which only become fully expressed in an “excisionless” genetic background. The results indicate that the seven genetic loci studied mediate three different types of recovery from UV-irradiation.  相似文献

The effect of Vespa amino acid mixture (VAAM) on the release of lipolytic products was examined in isolated rat adipocytes. Concentrations of 112.5 to 225 ppm of VAAM showed significantly greater release of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and glycerol than the same concentrations of casein amino acid mixture (CAAM). The integrated relative release of NEFA and glycerol was lower in response to individual administration of amino acids comprising VAAM than to VAAM itself. Further, amino acids mixtures deficient in a single amino acid comprising VAAM showed significantly lower release of lipolytic products than VAAM. These data suggest that the synergistic effect of VAAM on the release of lipolytic products is a function of concurrent exposure to the unique composition of amino acids found in VAAM as compared to the effect of exposure to the same individual un-mixed amino acids or to a mixture lacking one of the amino acids comprising VAAM.  相似文献

Interleukin-8 (IL-8 or CXCL8), the archetypal member of the CXC chemokine subfamily, stimulates neutrophil chemotaxis by activating receptors CXCR1/IL8RA and CXCR2/IL8RB. Previous mutational studies have implicated both the N-terminal and third extracellular loop (E3) regions of these receptors in binding to IL-8. To investigate the interactions of these receptor elements with IL-8, we have constructed soluble proteins in which the N-terminal and E3 elements of either CXCR1 or CXCR2 are juxtaposed on a soluble scaffold protein; these are termed CROSS-N(X1)E3(X1) and CROSS-N(X2)E3(X2), respectively. Isothermal titration calorimetry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to compare the IL-8 binding properties of the receptor mimics to those of control proteins containing only the N-terminal or E3 receptor element. CROSS-N(X2)E3(X2) bound to monomeric IL-8 with the same affinity and induced the same chemical shift changes as the control protein containing only the N-terminal element of CXCR2, indicating that the E3 element of CXCR2 did not contribute to IL-8 binding. In contrast, CROSS-N(X1)E3(X1) bound to IL-8 with ~10-fold increased affinity and induced different chemical shift changes compared to the control protein containing only the N-terminal element of CXCR1, suggesting that the E3 region of CXCR1 was interacting with IL-8. However, a chimeric protein containing the N-terminal region of CXCR1 and the E3 region of CXCR2 (CROSS-N(X1)E3(X2)) bound to IL-8 with thermodynamic properties and induced chemical shift changes indistinguishable from those of CROSS-N(X1)E3(X1) and substantially different from those of CROSS-N(X2)E3(X2). These results indicate that the N-terminal and E3 regions of CXCR1 interact synergistically to achieve optimal binding interactions with IL-8.  相似文献

The present investigation was carried out (1) to evaluate whether the mouse is able to discriminate vaginal and other bovine body fluids and (2) to determine which bodily fluid will most efficiently be used to detect estrus. The time spent by the male mice in investigating the different bovine odorant samples clearly demonstrated the mouses ability to discriminate between estrus and non-estrus fluid samples. Estrus vaginal fluid was found to be the most attractive followed by saliva, feces and milk. Thus estrus vaginal fluid may act as an additional/secondary factor along with urine in eliciting copulatory behavior in bulls. The results of this study revealed that bodily fluids such as saliva, feces and milk also have estrus-related odors and that these may be involved in bovine biocommunication.This revised version was published online in March 2005 with corrections to the contact informations of the corresponding author.  相似文献

We provide a systematic analysis of how odor quality, quantity, and duration are encoded by the odorant receptor repertoire of the Drosophila antenna. We test the receptors with a panel of over 100 odors and find that strong responses are sparse, with response density dependent on chemical class. Individual receptors range along a continuum from narrowly tuned to broadly tuned. Broadly tuned receptors are most sensitive to structurally similar odorants. Strikingly, inhibitory responses are widespread among receptors. The temporal dynamics of the receptor repertoire provide a rich representation of odor quality, quantity, and duration. Receptors with similar odor sensitivity often map to widely dispersed glomeruli in the antennal lobe. We construct a multidimensional "odor space" based on the responses of each individual receptor and find that the positions of odors depend on their chemical class, concentration, and molecular complexity. The space provides a basis for predicting behavioral responses to odors.  相似文献

Previous studies with standard densitometry (DXA) have suggested that the bone mass is strongly dependent on the muscle mass in the species, following a similar relationship at any age and sex hormones or related factors potentiate that relationship. Studies with pQCT indicated that the surplus bone mass per unit of muscle mass previously observed in premenopausal women would be stored in skeletal regions with relatively little mechanical relevance, thus avoiding remotion through mechanically oriented remodelling by the bone mechanostat. Scanning the distal radius with pQCT has also showed a highly significant, linear relationship between SSI of the distal radius and the dynamometric maximal bending moment of the forearm in normal men and women. In order to investigate similar relationships in regions that are inaccessible to pQCT, we used spinal radiographs and axial QCT. This study affords additional evidence to the previous references concerning the direct, significant impact of the regional muscle strength on the determination of the tomographic indicators of bone mechanical quality and their indirect repercussion of the skeletal condition (curvature of the spine).  相似文献
