The archegonial mucilage ofAthyrium filix-femina andA. distentifolium paralyses spermatozoids ofDryopteris filix-mas (and in one caseD. inaequalis) before they penetrate the archegonial venter. The archegonial mucilage ofDryopteris filix-mas has a weak positive chemotactic influence on the spermatozoids of the twoAthyrium species. The spermatozoids ofDryopteris were never observed in the archegonia ofAthyrium. Four diploid plants and four tetraploid plants ofPhegopteris decursive-pinnata were investigated for determination of the reproductive characteristics of their gametophytes and two major features were recognized. First, gametophytes of the diploids showed an ontogenetic sequence of gametangium formation which is unfavorable for intragametophytic selfing, whereas those of the tetraploids showed that favorable for intragametophytic selfing. Second, 41 to 72% of the isolated gametophytes of the diploids produced sporophytes in the intragmetophytic selfing tests, whereas all of the isolated gametrophytes of the tetraploids produced sporophytes in the tests. Based on these developmental and genetic features of gametophytes, the dissimilar mating systems of the diploids and the tetraploids of this species are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of culture system and population source on sexual expression and sporophyte production was examined for two invasive fern species in Florida, USA, Lygodium microphyllum and L. japonicum (Schizaeaceae). Both species are currently spreading through Florida. Long-distance dispersal of ferns is thought to rely on successful intragametophytic selfing. Given the rate of spread observed in both Lygodium species, we hypothesized that both species are capable of intragametophytic selfing. To test this hypothesis, gametophytes of both species were grown in vitro as isolates, pairs, and groups. Both species were capable of intragametophytic selfing; 78% of L. microphyllum isolates produced sporophytes and over 90% of the L. japonicum isolates produced sporophytes. Lygodium microphyllum also displayed the ability to reproduce via intergametophytic crossing, facilitated by an antheridiogen pheromone. Sporophyte production was rapid across mating systems for both species, an advantage in Florida's wet and dry seasonal cycles. The high intragametophytic selfing rate achieved by both species has likely facilitated their ability to colonize and spread through Florida. The mixed mating system observed in L. microphyllum appears to give this species the ability to invade distant habitats and then adapt to local conditions.  相似文献

Unisexual female and male and bisexual gametophytes were experimentally induced inLygodium japonicum. A single bisexual gametophyte was isolated in a dish and a female gametophyte was paired with a male one to allow intragametophytic selfing and intergametophytic mating, respectively. Pollination of the alpine herbDianthus glacialis was studied in a population in the Swiss Alps in 1991 and 1992. Only one insect species,Zygaena exulans (Lepidoptera), was observed to visit the flowers ofD. glacialis. Pollen loads onZ. exulans indicate that it is an effective pollinator ofD. glacialis. In 1991,Z. exulans frequently visited flowers ofD. glacialis. However, in 1992 almost no visits could be observed. Despite the occurrence of pollinators and the conspicuous flowers ofD. glacialis, there are strong indications that this plant is mainly selfing: (1) anthesis of individual flowers is short (c. one and a half days), (2) protandry, although pronounced in otherDianthus spp., is absent, (3) nectar production is low, (4) odour production is weak, (5) seed production by spontaneous selfing is high, (6) seed set in emasculated flowers is extremely low and (7) the seed/ovule ratio is distinctly higher inD. glacialis than in outcrossing plants.—Selfing inD. glacialis could have evolved under a shortage of pollinators during the glaciation periods. Present levels of cross-pollination byZ. exulans have apparently not been sufficient to reverse the pollination mechanism ofD. glacialis from selfing to outcrossing.  相似文献

A quantitative comparison was conducted on the foliage development during sporophyte development of three allopatric ferns in cool temperate and subalpine regions of Hokkaido and Tirol, European Alps. The foliage development ofDryopteris crassirhizoma, D. coreano-montana andD. filix-mas was quantitatively described by the leaf development (NV, number of veins); NV correlates the leaf-shape complexity from a circle (DI, L/2(3.14×S)1/2). Nearly similar patterns were detected on frequency distribution of fertile leaves, fertility increase and number of leaves in threeDryopteris ferns which exhibit funnel-shaped foliage arrangements in mature sporophyte. No difference was found in number of leaves, maximum NV, fertility rate and leaf-shape parameters among three ferns. A positive difference was found only on changes in order of pinnae with maximum number of costa branches (NVP) and the DI of outline of pinnae betweenD. crassirhizoma andD. filix-mas. These allopatricDryopteris ferns seem to have a similar foliage structure, in spite of some sympatricDryopteris ferns capable of producing putative hybrids (D. austriaca andD. amurensis; D. tokyoensis andD. monticola) having different foliage structures in Hokkaido. Homosporous pteridophytes are characterized by the production of free-living, potentially bisexual gametophytes. Because of the close proximity of archegonia and antheridia on the same thallus, it has been assumed that high rates of intragametophytic self-fertilization would predominate in natural populations of homosporous pteridophytes. Using enzyme electrophoresis we determined sporophytic genotype frequencies for natural populations of three lycopod species, Lycopodium clavatum, L. annotinum, and Huperzia miyoshiana. Based on these genotype frequencies and the estimation procedures of Holsinger (1987), the estimated rates of intragametophytic selfing in these species are extremely low. Estimated selfing rates were greater than 0.000 in only two of 13 populations of L. clavatum, one of six populations of L. annotinum, and one of four populations of H. miyoshiana. Despite the potential for intragametophytic self-fertilization, the gametophytes of these three lycopod species predominantly cross-fertilize, although the mechanism(s) promoting intergametophytic matings are unknown. These results are similar to those obtained for homosporous ferns and Equisetum arvense. It is therefore clear that most homosporous pteridophyte species investigated do not exhibit high rates of intragametophytic self-fertilization; in contrast, intergametophytic matings predominate.  相似文献

The models of Lande and Schemske predict that among species in which the selfing rate is largely under genetic control and not subject to tremendous environmental variation, the distribution of selfing rates should be bimodal. When this prediction was tested empirically using data from the literature for species of angiosperms and gymnosperms, the distribution of outcrossing rates for all species was clearly bimodal. To provide another empirical test of the prediction, we analyzed mating-system data for 20 species of Pteridophyta (ferns). Homosporous ferns and their allies are unique among vascular plants because three types of mating are possible: intragametophytic selfing (selfing of an individual gametophyte); intergametophytic selfing (analogous to selfing in seed plants); and intergametophytic crossing (analogous to outcrossing in seed plants). The distribution of intragametophytic selfing rates among species of homosporous ferns is clearly uneven. Most species of homosporous ferns would be classified as extreme outcrossers. In contrast, a few species are nearly exclusively inbreeding. In only a few populations of Dryopteris expansa and Hemionitis palmata and a single population of Blechnum spicant do we see convincing evidence of a mixed mating system. The uneven distribution of selfing rates we observed for homosporous ferns, coupled with a corresponding bimodality of the magnitude of genetic load, strongly supports the model.  相似文献

Intragametophytic selfing is a mode of reproduction occurring in homosporous ferns where two gametes from the same haploid gametophyte form a completely homozygous sporophyte. The inbreeding equilibrium is derived for a population with partial intragametophytic selfing, selfing, and outcrossing. Procedures for directly estimating the extent of intragametophytic selfing and selfing using parent-offspring data are given. The conditions for a stable polymorphism from a heterozygous-advantage fitness model are more restrictive for partial intragametophytic selfing than for selfing. The rate of decay of gametic disequilibrium is slower for partial intragametophytic selfing than for selfing. Based on these findings, one would predict that plants with intragametophytic selfing would have less polymorphism for loci with a heterozygous advantage and more gametic disequilibrium between neutral loci than is expected for populations with an equivalent amount of selfing. Data from several studies are consistent with these predictions.  相似文献

It has been revealed that gametophytes of diploid plants ofPhegopteris decursive-pinnata have a low capability for intragametophytic selfing (Masuyama, 1979). In the present study, intergametophytic mating tests were conducted for the self-sterile gametophytes of four diploids to demonstrate the genetic factors responsible for such a low capability for selfing. The results of the tests indicated that the gametophytes carried two or more kinds of recessive embryonic lethal factors which were non-allelic with each other and that the occurrence frequency of the gametophytes with an identical recessive lethal factor was 13% to 27% in the gametophyte families of these four diploids The karyological study of a diploid sporophyte suggested not the tetraploid but the diploid constitution of somatic chromosomes. Based on these data, the diploid inheritance of two or three special deleterious genes with a synergistic interaction responsible for the embryonic lethality was hypothesized to elucidate the self-sterility in the diploids of this species.  相似文献

Esterase zymograms were obtained following polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis of protein extractsFusarium sambucinum and related species originating from different geographic locations and different matrices. The sites of esterase activity were recorded, and the Rfs were calculated. The data were used for the construction of phenograms by cluster analysis and nonlinear mapping by computerized classification techniques. The fifteen isolates ofF. sambucinum, the eight isolates ofF. torulosum and the six isolates ofF. spec. nov. each had identical profiles, and are therefore electrophoretically distinct species. The isolates ofF. sarcochroum, one ofF. sambucinum sensu lato (BBA 64280) and fifteen isolates ofF. sambucinum were electrophoretically indistinguishable from each other. We assume they are synonymous. The isolate ofF. bactridioides, one ofF. sambucinum sensu lato (BBA 64993) and eight isolates ofF. torulosum had uniform EST patterns, therefore the two species are electrophoretically identical. We assume they are also synonymous. The remaining three isolates ofF. sambucinum sensu lato are somewhat closely related toF. sambucinum isolates on the basis of our investigations.  相似文献

Morphological and physiological comparisons were made of sevenHelicobasidium mompa isolates and fourH. purpureum isolates. Colonies of theH. mompa isolates were thin, dense, or hard and dense, and most were pale brown to brown or dark brown, while that of isolate 344c was pinkish. Colonies ofH. purpureum isolates were hard and dense, and their colonies were dark brown. Diameters of hyphae were similar forH. mompa andH. purpureum. Dimensions of conidia and morphology of conidiophores ofH. mompa isolate 344c were close to those ofH. purpureum reported previously.H. mompa isolates grew well at 23°C, 25°C or 27°C, while all isolates ofH. purpureum grew well at 23°C. Growth rates ofH. purpureum isolates was almost the same as those ofH. mompa isolates with slow growth. Polygaracturonase activity at pH 3 was variable among the isolates for bothH. mompa andH. purpureum. Itaconic acid was produced abundantly by three isolates ofH. mompa but not produced by isolate AH130, whereas all isoaltes ofH. purpureum produced a small amount of itaconic acid.  相似文献

Morphological and molecular characters were analysed to investigate diversity within isolates of the Glomus claroideum/Glomus etunicatum species group in the genus Glomus. The inter- and intra-isolate sequence diversity of the large subunit (LSU) rRNA gene D2 region of eight isolates of G. claroideum and G. etunicatum was studied using PCR-single strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP)-sequencing. In addition, two isolates recently obtained from Southern China were included in the analysis to allow for a wider geographic screening. Single spore DNA isolation confirmed the magnitude of gene diversity found in multispore DNA extractions. An apparent overlap of spore morphological characters was found between G. claroideum and G. etunicatum in some isolates. Analysis of the sequence frequencies in all G. etunicatum and G. claroideum isolates (ten) showed that four LSU D2 sequences, representing 32.1% of the clones analysed for multispore extraction (564) were found to be common to both species, and those sequences were the most abundant in four of the ten isolates analysed. The frequency of these sequences ranged between 23.2% and 87.5% of the clones analysed in each isolate. The implications for the use of phenotypic characters to define species in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are discussed. The current position of G. claroideum/G.etunicatum in the taxonomy of the Glomeromycota is also discussed.  相似文献

Verticillium dahliae race-2 can invade the resistant cultivars of tomato possessing theVe gene. This new race was recently found in several regions in Japan, and 10 isolates ofV. dahliae race-2 from these regions were used in our study. Pathogenicity tests identified these isolates as the tomato pathotype (B). We examined the vegetative compatibility of 8 of these 10 Japanese isolates ofV. dahliae race-2 to estimate their genetic relatedness with the testers of Japanese vegetative compatibility group previously proposed (VCGJ) usingnit mutants. Compatiblenit1 and NitM mutants were obtained from allV. dahliae race-2 isolates. Selected representativenit1 and NitM mutants of eachV. dahliae race-2 isolates were paired with VCGJ testers. All isolates ofV. dahliae race-2 showed a strong reaction with VCGJ2, i.e., tomato pathotype. All isolates ofV. dahliae race-2 except for isolate To22 reacted weakly to VCGJ1 and J3. Japanese isolates ofV. dahliae race-2 were assigned as VCGJ2 and were hence vegetatively closely related with those ofV. dahliae race-1. The origin of Japanese isolates ofV. dahliae race-2 was discussed.  相似文献

Because homosporous pteridophytes (Psilotophyta, Arthrophyta, most Microphyllophyta and Pteridophyta) produce bisexual gametophytes, it was maintained that high levels of inbreeding would characterize these plants. Electrophoretic evidence was used to estimate the frequency of intragametophytic selfing in Equisetum arvense (Arthrophyta). A total of 669 samples from 17 populations was examined from western North America. Although some populations exhibited as many as seven or eight genotypes, 10 populations were each characterized by only a single genotype; eight of these populations were heterozygous for one or more loci. For most populations, estimates of intragametophytic self-fertilization are 0.000, indicating that virtually all matings involve different gametophytes. Genetic data corroborate predictions based on earlier field and laboratory investigations of Equisetum gametophytes. These detailed studies demonstrated that in many species, including E. arvense, gametophytes are initially either male or female; only later and in the absence of fertilization do some gametophytes become bisexual. Our findings join a growing electrophoretic data base which demonstrates that homosporous pteridophytes are not highly inbreeding as previously suggested.  相似文献

Artificially formed clonal gametophytes ofDryopteris filix-mas (L.)Schott were able to grow and reproduce, although growth rates, proportions of hermaphrodites and reproductive efforts were low. Variable density and nutrient levels appeared to affect gametophytic life histories and they continued to influence the viability of the developing sporophyte generation. Differences between populations and sporophytes were discovered in life histories. Hermaphroditic gametophytes were considerably larger and possessed higher viability than did males. Clear differences between clones in the level of phenotypic plasticity in gametophyte size were observed. No neighbor effect on gametophyte sex expression was detected with the densities and nutrient levels used.  相似文献

The incidence ofFusarium moniliforme in surface-sterilized kernels in two commercial South African white maize cultivars was 64% and 6%, respectively. Heat treatment completely eliminated seedborneF. moniliforme from kernels of both cultivars. Heat treated, uncontaminated maize germlings were pre-inoculated with different isolates ofF. moniliforme and planted in steam-treated soil containing inoculum of different isolates ofF. graminearum Group 1 and Group 2. Seedling weights of germlings pre-inoculated with some isolates ofF. moniliforme were significantly higher than those of controls when exposed to some isolates ofF. graminearum in the soil. The protective effect of pre-inoculation withF. moniliforme was particularly evident in maize seedlings exposed to inoculum of an aggressive isolate ofF. graminearum Group 1. This is the first report of the protection of maize seedlings byF. moniliforme against infection byF. graminearum in the soil.  相似文献

Recent studies of germination in natural habitats, of genetic variation within populations and of the relative proportion of vegetative and sexual reproduction in the clonal plant speciesAnemone nemorosa suggest that sexual recruitment by seeds from outcrossed flowers is important for the maintenance of this species' populations. Because published reports on its breeding system are controversial, pollination experiments were performed in five natural populations ofA. nemorosa. Differences in ovule number per flower were recorded among populations, but they were not related to obvious habitat differences. Seed/ovule-ratios were significantly higher after open pollination and artificial crossing than after either artificial or spontaneous selfing. Populations had no effect on seed/ovuleratios. Different breeding indices indicated thatA. nemorosa is mainly self-incompatible. Nevertheless, some seed set also occurred after selfing, and both artificial and spontaneous selfing exhibited higher variation in seed/ovule-ratios than open pollination and artificial crossing. Continuous variation in seed/ovule-ratios after selfing suggested that the expression and effectiveness of the self-incompatibility system ofA. nemorosa is influenced by both genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity.  相似文献

Identifications of ubiquinone isoprenologues are presented for isolates identified with six species ofTaphrina and for isolates of the two species ofSymbiotaphrina. All had Q-10 as the major ubiquinone system. The inclusion ofT. populina andS. buchneri, the respective type species, establishes this as the value for these genera. Both species ofSymbiotaphrina were urease positive even though, according to the literature, they are unable to utilize urea as a sole nitrogen source. Methanol and flavonoid extracts (free and bound) of Marchantia polymorpha L., Dryopteris filix-mas (L.) Schott and Ephedra foliata Boiss. were screened against three fungal plant pathogens: Alternaria solani, Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia solani. The extracts from D. filix-mas and E. foliata showed >80% of mycelial inhibition of A. solani whereas M. polymorpha and D. filix-mas (rhizome) completely inhibited the mycelial growth of R. solani when tested at highest concentration (5 mg/ml). Inhibition of spore germination of fungi (A. solani and F. oxysporum) was observed to be 100% by most of the extracts at 10 mg/ml. Moreover, plant extracts were found effective in increasing seed germination and seed vigour simultaneously thereby decreasing the percentage of pathogen infection. The results of the present study reveal that the plants screened possess the potential to inhibit the crop fungal pathogens and further investigation is required to explore the biologically active constituents of these plants and to use them as natural plant protectants for agriculture.  相似文献
