  1. Pest management of stink bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], corn (Zea mays L.) and cotton (Gossypium spp.) agroecosystems has become a major concern in several countries of the Americas.
  2. In this review, we report an overview on geographical distribution, injury, damage and methods used to control (plant resistance mechanisms, biological control) the most important stink bugs in the Americas, with an emphasis on Brazil, the implications of the trend towards decreased susceptibility of stink bug populations to insecticides and the current difficulties of the management of these insect pests.
  3. Currently, the Neotropical brown stink bug Euschistus heros (Fabricius) is less susceptible to organophosphate insecticides than in the past. A slight reduction in E. heros susceptibility to pyrethroids and, to a lesser extent, to neonicotinoids has also been observed. In addition, the green‐belly stink bug [Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas)] is more tolerant to the three classes of insecticides (neonicotinoids, organophosphates and pyrethroids) than E. heros.
  4. Metabolic detoxification is involved in organophosphate, neonicotinoid and pyrethroid differences in susceptibility. Restricted availability of insecticides with different modes of action could favour the selection of resistant phenotypes in stink bug populations.

Fresh and dry body weights (FW, DW) were greater for adult southern green stink bug,Nezara viridula (L.) than for the brown stink bug,Euschistus heros F. throughout the year in southern Brazil. FemalesN. viridula significantly increased FW and DW in late summer-early autumn, and during mid-spring; femaleE. heros did not show the same rates of increase in FW and DW. FemaleN. viridula were heavier than males, particularly during summer; however, female and maleE. heros were generally similar in weight.E. heros contained significantly greater amounts of lipid thanN. viridula, during mid-autumn to early-spring (April–September). Survivorship (%) and total longevity ofE. heros adults provided water only was greater (34.6–24.6 days, for females and males) than that forN. viridula (14.8–13.0 days); without water and food, longevity was drastically reduced (<7 days) for both species.  相似文献

  1. Females of many species select mates based on important morphological and performance traits. This behaviour likely facilitates reproductive success thus exhibiting sexual selection. Most such studies have evaluated a single morphological variable, and only a minority of them studies the effects of behaviour and performance (functional capacity: Irschick et al., Evolutionary Ecology Research, 10 , 177–196, 2008) at all.
  2. This study compares male morphological and performance traits differing in three variables that may correlate with fitness: condition index, flight ascent speed and resistance to torpor in relation to male mating success in the parasitoid wasp species Alabagrus texanus (Braconidae), a species where males swarm about emerging virgin females that display both choosy and non-choosy behavioural phenotypes.
  3. Males that successfully mated with choosy females exhibited higher condition indices and somewhat stronger resistance to torpor than other males. Conversely, males that mated with non-choosy females did not differ in any trait from other males we measured. Early-arriving males did not have higher condition indices or greater mating success than other males.
  4. Thus, both morphological and performance traits contributed to male success, which acted through female choice, indicating a role for sexual selection. Patterns of choice further differed among females, independent of male traits.

  1. Population dynamics of a univoltine butterfly Parnassius glacialis (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) was studied with mark-recapture methods for three successive generations in a hilly region in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan in 1981–1983.
  2. Jolly (1965) andSeber's (1973) method was applied to the mark-recapture data to estimate population parameters (daily survival rate, longevity, population size, sex ratio, etc.).
  3. Sampling ratios were at least 50% and 30% for males and females, respectively.
  4. Mean daily survival rate for males ranged 0.81–0.86 and that for females 0.80–0.84. Mean longevity was about 4–7 days for the males and about 5 days for the females. Spiders killed more males than females. Maximum longevity for an individual recorded during the study was 31 days for males and 18 days for females.
  5. Emergence of the butterflies was later and less synchronous in 1981 than in 1982 and 1983. This was thought to be due to later extinction of heavier snow in 1981 than in the other years.
  6. The population remained relatively stable for the three successive generations, with estimated total numbers of 914, 1277, and 869.

褐飞虱共生解脂假丝酵母抗吡虫啉菌株的驯化   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
为进一步研究共生菌在褐飞虱对吡虫啉产生抗性中的生理生化机制,在稻田杀虫剂对褐飞虱共生解脂假丝酵母生长影响的基础上,选用不同吡虫啉浓度进行抗药性菌株的驯化。结果表明,褐飞虱共生解脂假丝酵母在不同吡虫啉浓度(2 000、1 000和500 mg/L)的固体培养基上继代培养,经过20代后2 000 mg/L培养基上的共生菌菌落数量,与未加吡虫啉的培养基上的菌落数量差异不明显,并且连续3代稳定后定为抗2 000 mg/L吡虫啉的共生菌菌株。在光镜下比较不同抗感吡虫啉菌株假菌丝的形态变化,发现抗吡虫啉菌株的假菌丝出现畸形,而且假丝变短,部分出现了膨大。  相似文献

  • 1 The sterile insect technique (SIT) is widely used to suppress or eradicate target pest insect populations.
  • 2 The effectiveness of SIT depends on the ability of released sterile males to mate with and inseminate wild females. The use of gamma radiation to induce sterility, however, negatively affects both somatic cells as well as reproductive cells. Consequently, mating performance of sterilized individuals decreases drastically over time. The mating propensity of sterilized Euscepes postfasciatus (Fairmaire) males irradiated with a single dose of 150 Gy (the current standard of the Okinawa Prefecture SIT programme) is equal to that of non‐irradiated weevils for the first 6 days.
  • 3 Fractionated irradiation, in which a sterilizing dose is delivered over time in a series of smaller irradiations, reduces the damage of irradiation in insects. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of fractionated irradiation on male fertilization ability, longevity and mating propensity of E. postfasciatus for a period of 16 days after irradiation.
  • 4 Although fractionated irradiation totalling 150 Gy was found to induce full sterility regardless of the number of individual doses, the mating propensity of male weevils sterilized by fractionated irradiation was maintained for the first 12 days. These results demonstrate that fractionated irradiation can be highly advantageous in programmes aimed at eradication of E. postfasciatus.

Abstract.
  • 1 Multiple mating and its effect on reproductive performance of female Epiphyas postvittana (Walker) moths were studied under controlled conditions.
  • 2 The age at which the moths mated for the first time ranged from the first to the tenth day after emergence, but 71% of first matings were during the first 3 days.
  • 3 The majority (63%) of females had one or two spermatophores in the bursa copulatrix. Some (24%) were found with three to five spermatophores, whereas no successful mating occurred among 13% of individuals. The number of matings was partly dependent on the number of mates available to the female. Between the range of sex ratios of one male to one female and four males to one female maximal mating success occurred at the ratio of three males to one female.
  • 4 Virgin females were capable of egg-laying, but mating stimulated and accelerated oviposition. Mated individuals laid twice as many eggs as unmated ones.
  • 5 The level of copulatory activity did not influence the longevity of females irrespective of the number of males available to them.
  • 6 Sex ratios with greater than one male to a female improved the reproductive success by marginally increasing fecundity and fertility.
  • 7 It is concluded that multiple mating would enhance population growth, and is of particular benefit to populations with a preponderance of females, as is known to occur naturally in this species.

  1. The platypus is a cryptic mammal that inhabits freshwater streams and rivers of eastern Australia. Tracking the movements of wild platypuses has been notoriously difficult due to the animals' morphology and methodological limitations. Knowledge of fine‐scale movements and interactions among individuals remain particularly poorly understood, as do responses to changes in hydrology.
  2. We tracked movements of 15 platypuses (six females, nine males) downstream of the Jindabyne Dam on the Snowy River, using externally attached acoustic transmitters (September–November 2017), to assess spatio‐temporal activity patterns among individuals and changes in movement and activity before and after an environmental flushing flow. As the study took place during the breeding season, we expected to observe overlap in area of activity among males and females, but not among males due to increased territoriality during these months. We also anticipated that a large flow event would impact their activity and foraging behaviour, possibly displacing platypuses downstream.
  3. Overlaps in area of activity and temporal co‐occurrence within a pool varied among individuals, with two resident males exhibiting some spatial overlap of activity and varying temporal co‐occurrence, despite tracking during the breeding season. All six tracked females were captured in the same pool and appeared to be residents, possibly highlighting preferences for certain habitats during the breeding months.
  4. We found no evidence that the movements of adult platypuses were affected by an environmental flushing flow, with no significant changes to area of activity, number of detections, or daily range of movements. However, foraging duration increased in the week after the flow, possibly associated with increased prey availability.
  5. These findings suggest that territoriality between males during and after the breeding season may depend on platypus density and resource availability and that pools with high resource availability may support several breeding females.

Herbivory is known to increase the emission of volatiles, which attract natural enemies to herbivore‐damaged plants in laboratory and agricultural systems. We report on signalling through volatiles induced by Euschistus heros (F.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) in two legumes that influence the attraction and retention of the egg parasitoid Telenomus podisi (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). Air‐borne extracts obtained from two host plants of E. heros, soybean, Glycine max, and pigeon pea, Cajanus cajan (Leguminosae), produce a different blend of emitted volatiles when attacked by adult males or females and nymphs of the pest species, compared with the undamaged plants. The same results were obtained when the plants were treated with extracted saliva of E. heros which had been mechanically introduced into the plants. This indicates that some substance in the saliva contributed to the release of the volatiles. Bioassays in a Y‐tube olfactometer with female T. podisi and treated plants confirmed the significant preference of the egg parasitoid for plants attacked by either males, females, or fourth instar nymphs of the pest species. On the other hand, volatile extracts obtained from soybean subjected to the velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis, a non‐host species for T. podisi, showed a different blend of volatiles compared to those obtained from plants subjected to E. heros. Additionally, the volatiles obtained from this plant–host complex were not attractive to T. podisi. These results indicate that E. heros causes an increase in the emission of specific plant volatiles, and that the induction is possibly caused by an elicitor present in the pest saliva. The possibility that these plant volatiles play an important role in the attraction and retention of the egg parasitoid T. podisi is discussed.  相似文献

The egg parasitoid, Telenomus podisi, was shown to recognize its host, Euschistus heros, through both chemical and physical cues. These were determined in short-range bioassays. The cues comprised fertile and infertile host eggs, egg extracts, crude extracts of adult males and females and successive dilutions of the synthetic racemic mixture of methyl 2,6,10-trimethyltridecanoate, a male-produced pheromone of E. heros. Some of the treatments used induced a selection process in T. podisi, through host recognition behaviour, indicating a consistent response of this species to E. heros. The possibility that some of these compounds could be exploited as long-range kairomones, by T. podisi, is discussed. Using GC analysis, an unidentified compound (Rt 24.8 min), possibly from the egg adhesive material, was detected from E. heros egg extracts. Its retention time compared to the methyl 2,6,10-trimethyltridecanoate showed a lower volatility, suggesting that the egg adhesive may act as a short-range kairomone. Physical cues appeared to be an important component in the host selection process by T. podisi. The parasitoid discriminated infertile eggs which are differently shaped and smaller than fertile eggs.  相似文献

Studies on the reproductive biology and age of amphibians provide primary information about the life history and population demographic parameters of species. Here, we describe the reproductive cycle, size–fecundity relationships, reproductive effort, sexual dimorphism and sexual maturity of Odontophrynus americanus, the flood frog, from South Brazil. A total of 96 individuals were analysed. The reproductive cycles of males and females were described through morphoanatomical analysis of testis and ovary. Age at onset of sexual maturity and estimated longevity were determined by skeletochronology. Individuals of O. americanus presented a potentially continuous reproductive cycle with a peak of reproductive activity in the warmer months. Females presented a higher reproductive investment than males. Sexual maturity was reached at around one year of age for both sexes while longevity differed between the sexes, with females living up to six years and males up to ten years. No evidence of sexual size dimorphism was found. This study is among the few that have assessed age at sexual maturity and longevity in a Neotropical anuran. Basic aspects of life history are of paramount importance because they allow comparisons and test of hypotheses to be made, which can help to build generalizations about the evolutionary meaning of ecological strategies.  相似文献

【目的】通过对乙酰胆碱受体β1亚基突变后的抗吡虫啉棉蚜Aphis gossypii (Glover)种群的继续筛选, 明确该种群的抗性发展规律以及对其他新烟碱类杀虫剂啶虫脒和噻虫胺的交互抗性及相关酶学机理。【方法】采用浸渍法连续对抗吡虫啉棉蚜进行室内筛选、 测定噻虫胺和啶虫脒对抗吡虫啉棉蚜种群的毒力; 选择LC20剂量吡虫啉、 啶虫脒和噻虫胺处理抗性棉蚜, 采用生化分析法测定其体内羧酸酯酶、 谷胱甘肽-S-转移酶和乙酰胆碱酯酶的活性变化, 并观察其生物学特性的变化。【结果】本研究对抗性棉蚜突变种群用吡虫啉继续筛选至75代, 抗性倍数达到72.6倍, RF75停止用药筛选12代(RF75+12), 抗性仍达72.0倍。且RF75+12对噻虫胺和啶虫脒的交互抗性可分别达11.9倍和20.1倍。噻虫胺对抗吡虫啉棉蚜的蜜露分泌和体重的抑制作用均大于吡虫啉和啶虫脒。噻虫胺对RF75+12的羧酸酯酶、 谷胱甘肽-S-转移酶和乙酰胆碱酯酶均具有明显的抑制作用, 而啶虫脒的抑制作用较小。【结论】结果表明乙酰胆碱受体基因突变棉蚜种群对吡虫啉的抗性水平不仅升高, 且停止用药后其抗性可稳定遗传; 第二代新烟碱类的噻虫胺在抗吡虫啉棉蚜靶标突变种群的治理中具有较大的应用价值。  相似文献

Laboratory, greenhouse, and field studies with Euschistus heros (F.) and Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) in northern Paraná, Brazil, demonstrated greater survival and longevity with E. heros than N. viridula when fed the weed Acanthospermum hispidum DC. (Compositae). E. heros was better adapted to A. hispidum than N. viridula but neither species reproduced on this plant. Stink bugs moved from soybean to A. hispidum mainly during mid-March to mid-April when soybean plants matured. The infestation reached 60 and 100% with a maximum of ca. 3 and 10 stink bugs/plant in 1988 and 1989, respectively. Surprisingly, E. heros and N. viridula, which are normally seed-feeders, strongly preferred the high moisture stems of A. hispidum. Both species demonstrated similar feeding frequencies. These results suggest that in northern Paraná, the common weed, A. hispidum functions as a temporary host providing water and nutrients to those two pentatomid pests of soybean. Finally, both species do not seem to recognize A. hispidum as an unsuitable or perhaps toxic plant.  相似文献

  1. An adult population of a papilionid butterfly, Luehdorfia japonicaLeech , was studied by marking, release and recapture procedures in a hilly region in the suburbs of Kanazawa City, Japan.
  2. Age of butterflies was estimated from the wing wear conditions, rated as winage categories 0 to 6.
  3. Jolly (1965) andSeber's (1973) method was applied to the marking-recapture results for estimating the population parameters (sampling ratio, population size and survival rate).
  4. Sampling ratio of males was consistently higher (around 50%) than that of females.
  5. Newly emerged females were especially inactive, so that few of them were captured. From day 6.5 to day 10.0 they began to oviposit and became more active and more catchable.
  6. An approximate sex ratio of 1∶1 was confirmed from the specimens collected in the field and by rearing experiments.
  7. Daily survival rate was about 0.75–0.80 and mean longevity was about 4 days for both sexes. The maximum longevity observed was 17 days, for males and 21 days for females.
  8. Dispersal by both sexes of the butterfly was more than 1 km.

Sex differences in immune investment and infection rate are predicted due to the divergent life histories of males and females, where females invest more toward immunity due to the fitness consequences of a reduced lifespan and males allocate less toward immunity due to increased resource investment in traits critical to sexual selection. Consequently, males are expected to fight infection less adeptly, resulting in higher parasite loads relative to females across all taxa.
  2. Wild animals rarely face a single parasite within their given environment, yet nearly all studies on sex‐biased infection rates have focused on a single host–parasite relationship. Here, we investigate how simultaneous natural infections of ecto‐ and endosymbionts (i.e. both parasitic and phoretic taxa) correlate with sex biases in host immune response and reproductive investment in a field‐caught cricket, Gryllus texensis.
  3. Our comprehensive analysis found no significant sex differences in two measures of immune response (melanization and nodulation), and found no strong evidence of a sex bias in the prevalence or intensity of parasitism by the three most common parasites infecting wild G. texensis field crickets (Eutrombidiidae, gregarines, and nematodes).
  4. Two traits related to female fitness, egg number and egg size, showed no relation to parasitic infection; however, males having wider heads and poorer body condition were significantly more infected by eutrombidiid mites, gregarines, and nematodes.
  5. Despite frequent predictions of male‐biased parasitism in the literature, our results concur with many other studies indicating that the divergent life histories of males and females alone are not sufficient to explain natural infection rates in wild insects.

  1. Cerambyx welensii Küster (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a wood-borer responsible for the decline of Mediterranean oaks in open woodlands.
  2. To establish that contact pheromones are involved in mate recognition of C. welensii, we extracted the cuticular hydrocarbons by solid phase microextraction at pre-reproductive, beginning and ending of the reproductive period, and by solvent extraction of prothorax and elytra. The extracts were analysed by GC–MS under electron impact and chemical ionization conditions. Cuticular hydrocarbon profiles varied according to the reproductive period, although differences between sexes were not significant. Two compounds, 11/13-methylheptacosane and 11-methylnonacosane were more abundant in females at the beginning and ending of the reproductive periods. Compound 11/13-methylheptacosane was also more representative in female prothorax than in males, and 2-methyloctacosane was richer in male elytra than in females.
  3. We also studied the role of cuticular hydrocarbons in mate recognition in arena bioassays. Treatment of solvent-washed dead females and glass dummies with one female equivalent (FE) of cuticular extract elicited mating responses in males, especially at the beginning of the reproductive period, with copulation attempts reaching 61.9% on solvent-washed dead females and 23.8% on dummies. The successive treatment with synthetic compounds approaching a male cuticular profile inhibited male response.
  4. Our results confirm that contact pheromones mediate mate recognition in C. welensii. Knowledge of the precise role played by the major compounds 11/13-methylheptacosane and 11-methylnonacosane and other minor compounds representative in female prothorax may contribute to the development of novel management strategies against C. welensii.

Euschistus heros (Fabricius, 1798) is one of the most harmful insect pests damaging Brazilian soybean crops and has become a major problem due to its high population density and resistance to insecticides. Currently, there are no data on whether alterations of testicular morphology and chromosomal behavior are associated with the resistance mechanisms related to the action of insecticides. This study integrated analyses of the testicular morphology, meiocyte cell division, and chromosomal structure and behavior in the process of spermatogenesis in E. heros. We compared these features among wild‐caught individuals, insecticide‐susceptible and ‐resistant strains. The resistant strain was established through a selection experiment exposing the bugs to insecticides (thiamethoxam + lambda‐cyhalothrin) for 15 generations. No differences were detected in the examined features among the three groups of experimental individuals: the testis comprised six lobes, with the fifth lobe thinner than the others; the karyotype was 2n = 14 (12 + XY), with no evident changes in chromosomal breakage, rearrangement or behavior in the meiosis; and abundant spermatozoa were observed in all testicular lobes. Thus, any effects of the long‐term (15 generations) experimental selection by exposure to the insecticides were not detected on the male germinal tissue and chromosomes, suggesting the irrelevancy of the examined features to insecticide‐resistance mechanisms in E. heros.  相似文献

  1. Spatial ecology data are essential for conservation purposes, especially when extinction risk is influenced by anthropogenic actions. Space use can reveal how individuals use the habitat, how they organize in space, and which components are key resources for the species.
  2. We evaluated the space use and multiscale habitat selection of giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), a vulnerable Neotropical mammal, in a Cerrado site within a human‐modified landscape in southeastern Brazil.
  3. We used GPS transmitters to track eight anteaters in the wild. With the resulting dataset, we estimated home range and core‐area sizes and then used two overlap indexes. We assessed habitat selection by compositional analysis and analyzed events of spatio‐temporal proximity.
  4. The average Brownian bridge kernel estimate of home range size was 3.41 km2 (0.92–7.9). Regarding home range establishment, five individuals showed resident behavior. Males (n = 4) had larger home ranges and were more active than females (n = 4). Despite the spatial overlap of home range (above 40% in four dyads), maximum temporal space sharing was 18%. Giant anteaters were found in proximity. Habitat selection favored savanna, and exotic timber plantation was always avoided. Roads and built‐up areas were selected secondarily at the landscape level.
  5. The selection of anthropogenic sites denotes behavioral plasticity regarding modified habitats. However, the high selectivity for savanna, at all levels, demonstrates a high dependence on natural habitats, which provide the necessary resources for the species. The recurrent proximity of male–to‐female anteaters may indicate reproductive behavior, which is essential for maintaining this isolated population.

Abstract
  • 1 Damage caused by the three main species of stink bugs occurring on soybean Nezara viridula (Linnaeus), Piezodorus guildinii (Westwood) and Euschistus heros (Fabricius) was compared in field cages and in greenhouses. Infestation levels of 4 stink bugs/m row of plants (field cages) and 2 stink bug/plant (greenhouse) for 15 days during the pod filling stage are reported. At harvest, the yield and seed quality were evaluated.
  • 2 In the field, there was no difference in yield between infested and insect‐free plants, but damage to seed quality varied with stink bug species. Plants damaged by P. guildinii had the lowest quality seeds. From 50 g seed samples harvested in the field, the mean weight of seeds classified as ‘good’ was 37.3 g in plants infested with P. guildinii, compared to 41.8, 44.2 and 46.6 g in plants infested with E. heros, N. viridula and the control, respectively.
  • 3 Plants infested with P. guildinii showed the highest number of seeds damaged by stink bugs, whereas those infested with E. heros showed the lowest damage.
  • 4 Plants infested with P. guildinii had 18.5% damaged seeds, higher than the 3.6% and 3.4% damaged seeds from plants infested with the two other species and 0.1% in control plants. The percentage of non‐viable seeds due to stink bug damage was 5.7% for P. guildinii but lower for the other two species.

  1. Cannibalism and its role in population dynamics, along with various factors influencing the rate of cannibalism, have been widely studied across taxa.
  2. The effects of predatory cue concentrations and starvation on cannibalistic tendencies and other life-history traits in cannibalistic and non-cannibalistic adults of Menochilus sexmaculatus were investigated.
  3. Egg cannibalism increased with increasing predatory cue concentration and was maximum in high predatory cue treatment; increased with starvation irrespective of their diet history.
  4. Latency to cannibalise eggs was shorter for cannibalistic adults as compared to non-cannibalistic adults irrespective of their hunger status and concentration of conspecific cues.
  5. Non-cannibalistic females have higher fecundity than cannibalistic females.
  6. In conclusion, both cannibalistic and non-cannibalistic individuals respond differently to intrinsic (hunger) and extrinsic cues (predatory cue concentrations). Cannibalistic individuals cannibalise more than non-cannibalistic ones at low levels of starvation and predatory cues.
  7. Our finding suggests that cannibalistic individuals are better at assessing the risk and removing future competitors, which might favour these individuals over non-cannibalistic ones in adverse conditions and increased competition.
