The aerial parts of two Ratibida species gave, in addition to two known ones, eight new xanthanolides, a nerolidol and a phenylpropane derivative as well as a tetrayne thioenol ether. The structures and the stereochemistry were elucidated by high-field NMR spectroscopy. The chemotaxonomy of the genus Ratibida is discussed briefly.  相似文献

Different approaches for the assessment of biodiversity by means of remote sensing were developed over the last decades. A new approach, based on the spectral variation hypothesis, proposes that the spectral heterogeneity of a remotely sensed image is correlated with landscape structure and complexity which also reflects habitat heterogeneity which itself is known to enhance species diversity. In this context, previous studies only applied species richness as a measure of diversity. The aim of this paper was to analyze the relationship of richness and abundance-based diversity measures with spectral variability and compare the results at two scales. At three different test sites in Central Namibia, measures of vascular plant diversity was sampled at two scales – 100 m2 and 1000 m2. Hyperspectral remote sensing data were collected for the study sites and spectral variability, was calculated at plot level. Ordinary least square regression was used to test the relationship between species richness and the abundance-based Shannon Index and spectral variability. We found that Shannon Index permanently achieved better results at all test sites especially at 1000 m2, Even when all sites where pooled together, Shannon Index was still significantly related with spectral variability at 1000 m2. We suggest incorporating abundance-based diversity measures in studies of relationships between ecological and spectral variability. The contribution made by the high spectral and spatial resolution of the hyperspectral sensor is discussed.  相似文献

Agars from three species of Gracilaria (Rhodophyta) from Yucatán Peninsula   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Gracilaria cervicornis, Gracilaria blodgettii and Gracilaria crassissima growing along the coasts of Yucatán were investigated for their agar content. The effect of different concentrations of NaOH in the alkali treatment was evaluated. The three species of Gracilaria produced agars, both native and alkali treated, with different properties confirming the heterogeneity of the agar polymers in this genera. G. cervicornis produces agar polymers with an occurrence of methoxylation and sulphation at the C-6 of the beta-D-galactose residues, and with an extra methylation due to the presence of the 4-O-methyl-alpha-L-galactose residue. The presences of these residues is responsible for the extremely poor gelling ability of its agarocolloids, whose commercial value seems to be quite low. Agar extracts from G. blodgettii showed the typical pattern of unsubstituted agar with a very low degree of methylation on both galactose residues. The discrepancy found between sulphate content and NMR data of agar from this species requires a more detailed structural investigation. G. crassissima produces a good quality agar after sulphate precursor sequences have been removed by alkaline treatment, and it may be considered for exploitation as a source of commercial grade agar. Alkali treatment was effective both in removing alkali-labile sulphate and increasing the gel strength in G. crassissima but not in G. cervicornis and G. blodgettii.  相似文献

A compound that stimulated growth of soybean callus was isolated from spring sap of sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus L.). Insufficient compound was isolated to permit it to be characterised. A compound with identical properties was isolated from commercial maple syrup, the concentrated spring sap of Acer saccharum L. The compound was identified as 3-(3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl)-propan-1-ol (dihydroconiferyl alcohol, DCA). DCA was also active in the tobacco callus and radish leaf senescence assays, but was inactive in four other tests for cytokinin activity. DCA acted synergistically with kinetin to promote soybean callus growth. Plant communities are often structured by interactions among species, such as competition or facilitation. If competition is an important factor that controls the presence and absence of species within intact communities, then a competitive hierarchy, a ranked order from competitive dominant to competitive subordinate, should predict the composition of intact communities. We tested whether a competitive hierarchy derived from pairwise comparisons accurately predicts species abundances within a constructed polyculture community consisting of seven species common to old-field plant communities. We first conducted a pot experiment in field conditions wherein we grew the species in all possible combinations, then created a competitive hierarchy derived from both competitive effect and competitive response for each species. Concurrently, at the same site in native field soil, we constructed polycultures consisting of the same seven species and calculated an abundance hierarchy based on foliar cover, biomass, and an index of species performance. The competitive hierarchy was not concordant with the abundance hierarchy, indicating that simple pairwise comparisons may not account for other factors that influence the abundance of species within relatively complex communities.  相似文献

Why does life diversify into the more or less discrete entities we recognise as species? Two main explanations have been proposed: i) species are a consequence of adaptation to different ecological niches, ii) species are a consequence of sexual reproduction and reproductive isolation. Phylogenetic studies of case-study groups can provide insights into the relative importance of divergent selection and isolation for speciation, but it can be difficult to infer causes of speciation unambiguously. The example of North American tiger beetles from the genus Cicindela is discussed. An alternative approach is to compare diversification between related sexual and asexual taxa to infer the relative importance of the two explanations. We outline expected patterns of diversification in sexual and asexual lineages under different scenarios using coalescent theory. Whether sexuals or asexuals diversify to a greater extent depends on the balance among various stages of diversification, particularly on the effects of sexual reproduction on rates of adaptive evolution. Rotifers offer a unique system to test these ideas, allowing comparison of patterns of genetic and functional morphological diversification in sexual (bdelloid) and asexual (monogonont) clades.  相似文献

Using degenerate primers based on published 2-microglobulin sequences we were able to obtain an expected 111 base pairs (bp) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) fragment from tilapia genomic DNA. The sequence of this fragment showed a high degree of similarity to mouse 2-microglobulin at the protein level. We used these primers in an anchored PCR to obtain a 213 bp PCR fragment from a carp cDNA library. This was then used to clone a full-length 2-microglobulin cDNA from carp. The carp sequence showed the highest similarity to rabbit 2-microglobulin. Both sequences showed strong similarities to all previously published vertebrate 2-microglobulin sequences. The predicted protein secondary structure of both the carp and tilapia clones was almost identical to the corresponding regions of previously known vertebrate 2-microglobulin protein sequences. When either the carp or tilapia probes were used against corresponding northern blots, they hybridized to a message of approximately 800–1000 bases long, which corresponds to the previously published lengths of 2-microglobulin mRNAs. Southern blotting indicated that 2-microglobulin was encoded by a single copy gene in both cases. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the sequences were related to the 2-microglobulins of higher vertebrates but grouped together in an ancestral position.The nucleotide sequence data reported in this paper have been submitted to the GenBank nucleotide sequence database and have been assigned the accession numbers L05536 (carp), L05537 (tilapia).  相似文献

Six species of bioluminescent agarics are described and illustrated from a single site in primary Atlantic Forest habitat in the Parque Estadual Turistico do Alto Ribeira, Sao Paulo State, Brazil. These include two new taxa of Mycena, viz. M. asterina and M. lucentipes. Luminescence in Mycena fera, M. singeri and M. discobasis is reported for the first time. In addition an undeterminable luminescent Mycena species is described and additional specimens of Gerronema viridilucens are documented. An accounting of known bioluminescent species of Mycena and a discussion of why they luminesce are presented.  相似文献

The aerial parts of Artemisia iwayomogi afforded, in addition to already known terpenes, eleven new cudesmanolides whereas four new guaianolides were found in A. gmelinii. No sesquiterpene lactones were detected in the aerial parts of A. santolinifolia which afforded two new nerolidol derivatives besides several other already known compounds. From A. caerulescens var. cretacea six eudesmanolides were isolated, one of which has not been reported previously. The structures were elucidated by high field 1H NMR spectroscopy and chemical transformations. The chemotaxonomic significance of sesquiterpene lactones within the section Abrotanum and the subgenus Seriphidium is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Brother Marie-Victorin described six species from Quebec, Canada. We herein designate lectotypes for Aster gaspensis, Botrychium minganense, Cirsium minganense, and Gentiana gaspensis. The parcelling model of reciprocity predicts that grooming partners will alternate between giving and receiving grooming within grooming bouts, and that each partner will perform approximately as much grooming as it receives within each bout (‘time matching’). Models of allogrooming based on biological markets theory predict that individuals of lower dominance rank will exchange grooming for tolerance from high-rankers, and therefore an inverse relation will be found between grooming partners' dominance rank distance and how closely they match each other's grooming contributions within each bout. We used weighted logistic regression and weighted least-squares regression to test these predictions using data from female white-faced capuchins, Cebus capucinus, and bonnet macaques, Macaca radiata. Only 5-7% of macaque grooming bouts, and 12-27% of capuchin grooming bouts, were reciprocated. However, (1) the duration of grooming by the first groomer significantly predicted whether the groomee would reciprocate at all, and (2) when bouts were reciprocated, the duration of grooming by the first groomer significantly predicted the duration of grooming by the second groomer. Grooming was most balanced among females of similar dominance ranks. Both the time-matching and rank-related effects were weak, although significant. These results indicate that although some form of time matching may be a general characteristic of grooming in female-bonded primate species, time matching accounts for relatively little of the variation in the distribution of grooming within bouts. We also draw attention to weighted regression as a technique that avoids pseudoreplication while using all available data.  相似文献

This paper describes a possible method of compiling a rotifer species list for any site from a single visit. Sediment samples collected from Loch Leven on one occasion in winter were exposed to light and a range of temperature conditions in the laboratory. Resting eggs in the sediment were induced to hatch. The resultant species list was very similar to that obtained from regular plankton collections over the previous six year period.  相似文献

Semen from Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia), Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), Mouflon sheep (Ovis musimon), Fallow deer (Dama dama), collected by electroejaculation, and semen from Wildebeest antelope (Connochaetes taurinus), collected post mortem, were frozen using a standardized technique and a commercial freezing medium (Triladyl). Sperm quality was assessed by measuring their capacitation status (chlortetracycline assay) in addition to classic assessment: motility, viability (plasma membrane integrity), and acrosome integrity. Sperm cryosurvival measured in terms of recovery (from the initial, pre-freeze values) of motility, viability, and acrosome integrity was relatively high in most species. However, proportion of premature-capacitated spermatozoa (B + AR patterns) increased many times in relation to that of fresh semen: from 8% to 78% in Barbary sheep; from 27% to 61% in Bighorn sheep; and from 12% to 68% in Mouflon sheep. The use of a standardized technique for freezing of spermatozoa from wild ruminant species produced, in most of the cases, acceptable results. This approach may be extensively used to carry out sperm cryopreservation in field conditions. Chlortetracycline assay allowed identifying the same fluorescent patterns observed in spermatozoa from domestic animals and produced additional information on sperm cryosurvival. That is, it revealed those cells that survive freeze–thawing and are potentially fertile: non-capacitated (F pattern) and capacitated acrosome-intact spermatozoa (B pattern).  相似文献

Two fungal-secreted α-fucosidases and their genes were characterized. FoFCO1 was purified from culture filtrates of Fusarium oxysporum strain 0685 grown on l-fucose and its encoding gene identified in the sequenced genome of strain 4287. FoFCO1 was active on p-nitrophenyl-α-fucoside (pNP-Fuc), but did not defucosylate a nonasaccharide (XXFG) fragment of pea xyloglucan. A putative α-fucosidase gene (FgFCO1) from Fusarium graminearum was expressed in Pichia pastoris. FgFCO1 was ~1,800 times less active on pNP-Fuc than FoFCO1, but was able to defucosylate the XXFG nonasaccharide. Although FgFCO1 and FoFCO1 both belong to Glycosyl Hydrolase family 29, they share <25 % overall amino acid identity. Alignment of all available fungal orthologs of FoFCO1 and FgFCO1 indicated that these two proteins belong to two subfamilies of fungal GH29 α-fucosidases. Fungal orthologs of subfamily 1 (to which FoFCO1 belongs) are taxonomically more widely distributed than subfamily 2 (FgFCO1), but neither was universally present in the sequenced fungal genomes. Trichoderma reesei and most species of Aspergillus lack genes for either GH29 subfamily.  相似文献

Can the cause of aggregation be inferred from species distributions?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Species distributions often show an aggregated pattern, which can be due to a number of endo- and exogenous factors. While autologistic models have been used for modelling such data with statistical rigour, little emphasis has been put on disentangling potential causes of aggregation. In this paper we ask whether it is possible to infer sources of aggregation in species distributions from a single set of occurrence data by comparing the performance of various autologistic models. We create simulated data sets, which show similar occupancy patterns, but differ in the process that causes the aggregation. We model the distribution of these data with various autologistic models, and show how the relative performance of the models is sensitive to the factor causing aggregation in the data. This information can be used when modelling real species data, where causes of aggregation are typically unknown. To illustrate, we use our approach to assess the potential causes of aggregation in data of seven bird species with contrasting statistical patterns. Our findings have important implications for conservation, as understanding the mechanisms that drive population fluctuations in space and time is critical for the development of effective management actions for long-term conservation.  相似文献
