We investigate the electrophysiological salt stress response of the salt-sensitive charophyte Chara australis as a function of time in saline artificial pond water (saline APW) containing 50 mM NaCl and 0.1 mM CaCl2. The effects are due to an increase in Na+ concentration rather than an increase in Cl concentration or medium osmolarity. A previous paper (Shepherd et al. Plant Cell Environ 31:1575–1591, 2008) described the rise in the background conductance and inhibition of proton pumping in saline APW in the first 60 min. Here we investigate the shift of membrane potential difference (PD) to levels above −100 mV and the change of shape of the current–voltage (I/V) profiles to upwardly concave. Arguing from thermodynamics, the I/V characteristics can be modeled by channels that conduct H+ or OH. OH was chosen, as H+ required an unrealistic increase in the number/permeability of the channels at higher pH levels. Prolonged exposure to saline APW stimulated opening of more OH channels. Recovery was still possible even at a PD near −50 mV, with partial return of proton pumping and a decrease in OH current following APW wash. Upon change of pH from 7 to 9, the response was consistent with previously observed I/V characteristics of OH channels. For a pH change to 6, the response was transient before channel closure but could still be modeled. The consequences of opening of H+ or OH channels while the cell is under salt stress are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Progress in patch-clamping the plasmalemma ofChara australis has been slow because of the difficulty in obtaining a clean membrane surface upon which obtain a high resistance seal with the patch pipette. A surgical method is described here for cutting an access window in the cell wall of internodal cells fromChara australis. The method has a high success rate and also has the advantage of obviating the need for enzyme treatments. The patch-clamp technique is applied to theChara plasmalemma. Five types of channel activity are observed of which four of these are selective for Cl over K+.  相似文献

The explosive expansion of the common reed Phragmites australisover the last 50 years in thewetlands of the U.S. mid-Atlantic has been of concernto biologists, resource managers and the generalpublic. The replacement of Spartinaspp.communities by the invasive P. australishasbeen widely reported, but the ecosystem effect of thisreplacement is poorly understood, especially withregard to sediment accretion processes and elevationchange. It is hypothesized that a more detailedunderstanding of individual plant species and theirrole in marsh accretion may provide an improvedability to predict the effect of projected sea-levelrise in coastal wetlands. Two coastal salt marsh siteson the Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay in Maryland(USA) were studied to quantify depositionalenvironments associated with P. australis.Short-term sediment deposition (24 hr) and stormdeposition (17 d) were measured using filter paperplates, and vertical accretion and elevation change (6mo.) were measured using a marker horizon coupled witha sedimentation erosion table (SET). Greater rates ofmineral and organic sediment trapping were associatedwith the P. australiscommunity in both asubsiding creek bank marsh (34 g·m-2· day-1in P. australisvs. 18 g·m-2· day-1in Spartinaspp.) and a laterally eroding marsh(24 g·m-2· day-1in P. australisvs.15 g·m-2· day-1in Spartinaspp.).Litter accumulation in P. australisstands isresponsible for the higher depositional patternobserved. Additionally, below ground accumulation inP. australiscommunities (as much as 3 mm in 6months) appears to substantially increase substrateelevation over relatively short time periods. ThusP. australismay provide resource managers witha strategy of combating sea-level rise and currentcontrol measures fail to take this intoconsideration.  相似文献

Humulus japonicus in communities of Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Phragmites australis can grow large enough to overtop other species in the Amsa-dong floodplain. Because of strong winds and the weight of Humulus, plants of M. sacchariflorus and P. australis fell in mid-August and were subject to decomposition under its dense shading. To assess the effects of H. japonicus on nutrient cycling in these communities, we collected fresh samples of M. sacchariflorus and P. australis in litterbags and decomposed them under H. japonicus for 9 months, beginning in August. Biomass and organic contents from M. sacchariflorus during this incubation period were 49–51% and 44–48%, whereas those of P. australis were 49–61% and 32–52%, respectively. Their annual k values were 1.61–1.74 and 1.46–3.54, respectively. Initial N concentrations in M. sacchariflorus and P. australis were 13 and 20 mg g−1, while C:N ratios were 31 and 21, respectively. These results indicate that H. japonicus is responsible for the collapse of M. sacchariflorus and P. australis in August and also accelerates their nutrient cycling through rapid decomposition, thereby increasing nutrient circulation in floodplains.  相似文献

Chara hispida forms dense beds (0.78–0.95 kg DW m−2) in Colgada Lake. The ability of Chara meadows to act as a nitrogen source or sink was evaluated by the following methods: (1) investigating Chara growth, (2) nitrogen incorporation and decomposition laboratory experiments and (3) relating experimental results to field conditions. Sediment oospores were germinated in large aquaria and observed growth rates were 0.001 m day−1 (shoot length) and 0.0002 g day−1 (dry weight). Nitrogen uptake rates were determined by addition of K15NO3 during two different periods of Chara growth and the rates were 1.21 and 3.86 μM g DW−1 h−1 when charophytes were 166 days old (not sexually mature) and 323 days old (sexually mature), respectively. After the uptake experiments, the same charophytes were allowed to decompose within two types of litter bags (3 mm-pore litter bags and entire, non-porous plastic litter bags). Decomposition rates of Ch. hispida were 0.016 and 0.009 day−1 in perforated and non-perforated bags, respectively, and fit a negative exponential model. The nitrogen release rate, calculated as the disappearance of N content from Chara tissues, was 0.012 day−1 and there were no statistically significant differences between the values from the two different bag types. The dissolved organic nitrogen concentrations in aquarium and non-perforated litter bags waters increased linearly with time due to the leaching of soluble compounds from Chara. The rate of N loss from Chara tissues, total nitrogen and dissolved organic nitrogen release rates and the decrease in initial dry weight rate were all lower than the daily rate of Chara N uptake. By extrapolating laboratory data to field situations, we determined that approximately 38% of the N taken up by charophytes in Colgada Lake during the growth period is retained. Given the high charophyte biomass in the lake, its ability to incorporate nitrogen, its low decomposition rate and its ability to over-winter, we conclude that Chara beds could be acting as nitrogen sinks in this ecosystem.  相似文献

Chara australis cells exposed to media of pH 10 and above exhibit high conductance, arising from the opening of H+/OH channels in the plasma membrane. This high conductance can be totally inhibited by 1.0 mm ZnCl2 and restored by 0.5 mm 2‐mercaptoethanol (ME). Important for carbon fixation, H+/OH channels play a key role in cell pH banding. Banding was also shown to be abolished by 1.0 mm ZnCl2 and restored in some cells by ME. The proton pump is also involved in banding, but was little affected by ZnCl2 over the periods needed for the inhibition of H+/OH channels. Previously, we postulated that H+/OH channels open transiently at the onset of saline stress in salt‐sensitive C. australis, causing membrane potential difference (PD) noise; and remain open in latter stages of saline stress, contributing to cell deterioration. ZnCl2 totally inhibited the saline noise and the upwardly concave I/V characteristics associated with the putative H+/OH currents. Again, ME reversed both these effects. We discuss the mode of action of zinc ions and ME with reference to animal voltage‐gated H+ channels and water channels.  相似文献

Field and laboratory experiments were designed to determine the differential growth and toxin response to inorganic and organic nitrogen additions in Pseudo-nitzschia spp. Nitrogen enrichments of 50 μM nitrate (KNO3), 10 μM ammonium (NH4Cl), 20 μM urea and a control (no addition) were carried out in separate carboys with seawater collected from the mouth of the San Francisco Bay (Bolinas Bay), an area characterized by high concentrations of macronutrients and iron. All treatments showed significant increases in biomass, with chlorophyll a peaking on days 4–5 for all treatments except urea, which maintained exponential growth through the termination of the experiment. Pseudo-nitzschia australis Frenguelli abundance was 103 cells l−1 at the start of the experiment and increased by an order of magnitude by day 2. Particulate domoic acid (pDA) was initially low but detectable (0.15 μg l−1), and increased throughout exponential and stationary phases across all treatments. At the termination of the experiment, the urea treatment produced more than double the amount of pDA (9.39 μg l−1) than that produced by the nitrate treatment (4.26 μg l−1) and triple that of the control and ammonium treatments (1.36 μg l−1 and 2.64 μg l−1, respectively). The mean specific growth rates, calculated from increases in chlorophyll a and from cellular abundance of P. australis, were statistically similar across all treatments. These field results confirmed laboratory experiments conducted with a P. australis strain isolated from Monterey Bay, CA (isolate AU221-a) grown in artificial seawater enriched with 50 μM nitrate, 50 μM ammonium or 25 μM of urea as the sole nitrogen source. The exponential growth rate of P. australis was significantly slower for cells grown on urea (ca. 0.5 day−1) compared to the cells grown on either nitrate or ammonium (ca. 0.9 day−1). However the urea-grown cells produced more particulate and dissolved domoic acid (DA) than the ammonium- or nitrate-grown cells. The field and laboratory experiments demonstrate that P. australis is able to grow effectively on urea as the primary source of nitrogen and produced more pDA when grown on urea in both natural assemblages and unialgal cultures. These results suggest that the influence of urea from coastal runoff may prove to be more important in the development or maintenance of toxic blooms than previously thought, and that the source of nitrogen may be a determining factor in the relative toxicity of west coast blooms of P. australis.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of NaCl-salinity on the physiological attributes in common reed, Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel. Plants grew optimally under salinity treatment with standard nutrient solution without added salt and at NaCl concentrations up to 100 mM. Applied for 21 days, NaCl-salinity (300 and 500 mM) caused a significant reduction in growth allocation of all different tissues of P. australis. Shoot growth of reed plants displayed a highly significant correlation with plant–water relations and photosynthetic parameters. The net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance of reed plants treated with NaCl-salinity at varying osmotic potential (ψπ) of nutrient solutions were positively correlated, and the former variable also had a strong positive relationship with transpiration rate. Leaf water potential and ψπ followed similar trends and declined significantly as ψπ of watering solutions was lowered. The increase in total inorganic nutrients resulting from increased Na+ and Cl in all tissues and K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations were maintained even at the most extreme salt concentration. Common reed exhibited high K+/Na+ and Ca2+/Na+ selectivity ratios over a wide range of salinities under NaCl-salinity. These findings suggest that reed plants were able to adapt well to high salinities by lowering their leaf ψπ and the adjustment of osmotically active solutes in the leaves.  相似文献

Parkinson’s disease (PD), one of the most common human neurodegenerative disorders, is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the midbrain. Our recent case-control association study of 268 SNPs in 121 candidate genes identified α-synuclein (SNCA) as a susceptibility gene for sporadic PD (P = 1.7 × 10−11). We also replicated the association of fibroblast growth factor 20 (FGF20) with PD (P = 0.0089). To find other susceptibility genes, we added 34 SNPs to the previous screen. Of 302 SNPs in a total 137 genes, but excluding SNCA, SNPs in NDUFV2, FGF2, CALB1 and B2M showed significant association (P < 0.01; 882 cases and 938 control subjects). We replicated the association analysis for these SNPs in a second independent sample set (521 cases and 1,003 control subjects). One SNP, rs1805874 in calbindin 1 (CALB1), showed significance in both analyses (P = 7.1 × 10−5; recessive model). When the analysis was stratified relative to the SNCA genotype, the odds ratio of CALB1 tended to increase according to the number of protective alleles in SNCA. In contrast, FGF20 was significant only in the subgroup of SNCA homozygote of risk allele. CALB1 is a calcium-binding protein that widely is expressed in neurons. A relative sparing of CALB1-positive dopaminergic neurons is observed in PD brains, compared with CALB1-negative neurons. Our genetic analysis suggests that CALB1 is associated with PD independently of SNCA, and that FGF20 is associated with PD synergistically with SNCA. The current expansion of Phragmites australis into the high marsh shortgrass (Spartina patens, Distichlis spicata) communities of eastern U.S. salt marshes provided an opportunity to identify the influence of vegetation types on pools and fluxes of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN). Two brackish tidal marshes of the National Estuarine Research Reserve system were examined, Piermont Marsh of the Hudson River NERR in New York and Hog Island in the Jacques Coustaeu NERR of New Jersey. Pools of DIN in porewater and rates of DIN surface flux were compared in replicated pairs of recently-expanded P. australis and neighboring S. patens-dominated patches on the high marsh surface. Both marshes generally imported nitrate (NO3) and exported ammonium (NH4+), such that overall DIN was exported. No differences in surface exchange of NO3 or NH4+ were observed between vegetation types. Depth-averaged porewater NH4+ concentrations over the entire growing season were 56% lower under P. australis than under S. patens (average 1.4 vs. 3.2 mg NH4+ L−1) with the most profound differences in November. Porewater profiles showed an accumulation of NH4+ at depth in S. patens and constant low concentrations in P. australis from the soil surface to 50 cm depth, with no significant differences in porewater salinity. Despite these profound differences in porewater, NH4+ diffusion from soils of P. australis and S. patens were not measurably different, were similar to other published rates, and were well below estimated rates based on passive diffusion alone. Rapid adsorption and uptake by litter and microbes in surface soils of both communities may buffer NH4+ loss to flooding tides in both communities, thereby reducing the impact of P. australis invasion on NH4+ flux to flooding waters.  相似文献

To understand the mechanism of how Phragmites australis makes valuable floating mat biotopes under oligotrophic conditions, we investigated the environmental (water chemistry) and vegetational characteristics (growth, plant species richness, and floristic composition) of a floating mat consisting of three main mat-forming species with a zonal distribution (P. australis on the land side of the floating mat, Zizania latifolia on the middle area, and Typha angustifolia on the water side). Although they showed relatively low growth in the floating mat, compared to those in land-based wetlands, P. australis grew better than other mat-forming species in terms of shoot height and biomass production. Specifically, P. australis made more below-ground parts (593?±?38 g/m2) than other mat-forming species (Z. latifolia, 100?±?10 g/m2; T. angustifolia, 167?±?8 g/m2) and more companion species were found in P. australis-dominated plots (8.5?±?1.0 species/m2) than other plots (Z. latifolia-dominated plots, 2.7?±?0.6 species/m2; T. angustifolia-dominated plots, 1.0?±?0.0 species/m2). The larger amount of below-ground P. australis parts could contribute to thicker and denser mat structures, possibly providing more favorable habitats for neighboring plant species, thus facilitating more companion species within the P. australis-dominated area of the mat.

1. Centenarian species, defined as those taxa with life spans that frequently exceed 100 years, have long been of interest to ecologists because they represent an extreme end point in a continuum of life history strategies. One frequently reported example of a freshwater centenarian is the obligate cave crayfish Orconectes australis, with a maximum longevity reported to exceed 176 years. As a consequence of its reported longevity, O. australis has been used as a textbook example of life history adaptation to the organic‐carbon limitation that characterises many cave‐stream food webs. 2. Despite being widely reported, uncertainties surround the original estimates of longevity for O. australis, which were based on a single study dating from the mid‐1970s. In the present study, we re‐evaluated the growth rate, time‐to‐maturity, female age‐at‐first‐reproduction and longevity of O. australis using a mark–recapture study of more than 5 years based upon more than 3800 free‐ranging individuals from three isolated cave streams in the south‐eastern United States. 3. The results of our study indicate that accurate estimates of the longevity of O. australis are ≤22 years, with only a small proportion of individuals (<5%) exceeding this age. Our estimates for female time‐to‐maturity (4–5 years) and age‐at‐first‐reproduction (5–6 years) are also substantially lower than earlier estimates. 4. These new data indicate that the age thresholds for life history events of O. australis are comparable to other estimates for a modest assemblage of cave and surface species of crayfish for which credible age estimate exists, suggesting that a cave environment per se is not required for the evolution of extreme longevity in crayfish.  相似文献

The kinetics of single K+ channels were derived for patch-clamp recordings of membrane patches excised from cytoplasmic drops from the plant, Chara australis R. Br. Specifically, the tilt effect model of MacKinnon, Latorre and Miller (1989. Biochemistry 28:8092–8099) has been used to measure the electrostatic potential (surface PD) and fixed charge at the entrances of the channel. The surface PD is derived from the difference between the trans-pore potential difference (PD) and that between the two bulk phases. The trans-pore PD is probed using three voltage-dependent properties of the channel. These are (1) the association and dissociation rates of Ca2+ binding to the channel, from both the cytoplasmic and vacuolar solutions. These were determined from the mean blocked and unblocked durations of the channel in the presence of either 20 mmol liter–1 vacuolar or 1 mmol liter–1 cytoplasmic Ca2+; (2) the closing rate of the channel's intrinsic gating process. This was determined from the mean channel open time in the absence of vacuolar Ca2+ at membrane PDs more negative than –100 mV; and (3) the effect of Mg2+ on channel conductance when added to solutions initially containing 3 mmol liter–1 KCl.The voltage dependence of properties 1 and 2 shifts along the voltage axis according to the ionic strength of the bathing media, consistent with the presence of negative charge in the channel vestibules. Furthermore, the magnitude of this shift depends on the current in a manner consistent with diffusion-limited ion flow in the channel (i.e., the rate of ion diffusion in the external electrolyte limits the channel conductance). Mg2+ on either side of the membrane alters channel conductance in a voltage-dependent way. A novel feature of the Mg2+ effect is that it reverses, from a block to an enhancement, when the membrane PD is more negative than –70 mV. This reversal only appears in solutions of low ionic strength. The attenuating effect is due to voltage-dependent binding of Mg2+ within the pore, which presumably plugs the channel. The enhancing effect is due to screening by Mg2+ of surface potentials arising from diffusion-limited flow of K+.  相似文献

Aquatic carnivorous plants usually grow in shallow dystrophic waters poor in inorganic N and P. Utricularia australis was chosen as a model plant for its prolific distribution and great ecological plasticity. The photosynthetic CO2 compensation point and factors associated with investment in carnivory and capture of prey were measured in 17 U. australis micropopulations in Třeboň basin, Czech Republic, together with water chemistry factors at these sites differing greatly in their trophic level, water hardness, and prey availability. Apical shoot growth rate was estimated at some oligotrophic sites. The micropopulations differed greatly in the proportion of traps with animal prey (2.7–70%, mean 26%), trap proportion to total biomass (1.4–42%, mean 26%), mean trap biomass (0.7–63 μg trap−1, mean 19 μg), and maximum trap size (1–3 mm, mean 2.0 mm). CO2 compensation points ranged from 0.7 to 6.1 μM (mean 2.6 μM). A weak HCO3 use (compensation point 0.51 mM) was found in plants growing in alkaline water. Trap biomass proportion did not correlate significantly with prey capture and CO2 compensation points with ambient [CO2]. A very rapid apical growth (2.5–4.2 new nodes day−1) occurred in sand pits. Thus, HCO3 use in U. australis can be induced by growing at very high pH. CO2 compensation points resembled those known in other aquatic non-carnivorous plants. They did not reflect carnivory. In spite of very rapid apical shoot growth, the relative growth rate of U. australis can be zero in oligotrophic habitats without prey.  相似文献

Expansion of Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. (common reed) into stands of Typha spp. (cattail; Typha australis L. and T. x glauca) is common in the wetlands of northwestern Indiana (USA). To understand this phenomenon better, we investigated the production of shoot sprouts and proportional allocation of biomass as well as a potential role for the water table in the relative dominance of each species. The reduction in sprouts from rhizomes upon vegetative expansion of Phragmites appeared to be the most likely process causing the decline of Typha. The latter had a shoot density of 39/m2 in plots without Phragmites, but this dropped to 13 shoots m−2 in plots that had been invaded by Phramites. Such a decline was likely caused by reduced reserves; e.g., the belowground biomass of Typha decreased from 11.3 g m−2 without Phragmites to 8.1 g m−2 with Phragmites. The latter also reduced its belowground biomass but not its shoot density in the presence of Typha. The mean weight of Phragmites shoots was 2.9 g, and nearly all produced inflorescences. Meanwhile, Typha failed to develop spadices despite its shoots having a greater biomass (7 g). This suggests that Phragmites is more efficient than Typha in shoot growth. Springtime flooding appeared to promote the sprout of Typha shoots from shallow rhizomes (≈18 cm below the soil surface), whereas the shoot density of Phragmites showed no correlation with water level in that season. Deep-rooted Phragmites (≈39 cm) occurred on both high and low water-table sites, whereas the shallow-rooted Typha was limited to only the former. Phragmites will likely continue its expansion, by vegetative sprouts from rhizomes, into Typha wetlands.  相似文献

A hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] reducing bacterial strain was isolated from chromium-containing slag. It was identified as Pannonibacter phragmitetus based on physiological, biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. This bacterium displayed great Cr(VI) reduction capability. The Cr(VI) could be completely removed in 24 h under anaerobic condition when the initial concentration was 1,917 mg L−1, with the maximum reduction rate of 562.8 mg L−1 h−1. The Cr(VI) reduction rate increased with the increase of Cr(VI) concentration. P. phragmitetus was able to use many carbon sources such as lactose, fructose, glucose, pyruvate, citrate, formate, lactate, NADPH and NADH as electron donors, among which the lactate had the greatest power to promote the reduction process. Zn2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ inhibited, while Cu2+, Pb2+, Mn2+ and Co2+ stimulated the reduction. The optimum pH and temperature for reduction were 9.0 and 30 °C, respectively. The results indicated that this strain had great potential for application in the bioremediation of chromate-polluted soil and water systems.  相似文献

This study aimed to evaluate whether PD1.1 (c.‐606G>A), PD1 (c.627 + 252C>T), PD1.5 (c.804C>T), and PD1.9 (c.644C>T) single nucleotide polymorphisms of PDCD1 gene influence the risk, clinicopathological aspects, and survival of cutaneous melanoma (CM). Individuals with phototype I or II and PD1 CC genotype were under 5.89‐fold increased risk of developing CM. PD1.5 TT genotype increased PDCD1 expression (2.49 versus 1.28 arbitrary units, = .03) and PD1.5 CT or TT genotype and allele T increased PD1 expression in TCD4+ lymphocytes (16.6 versus 12.5%, = .01; 17.0 versus 13.1%, = .006). At 60 months of follow‐up, short recurrence‐free survival was seen in patients with PD1.1 AA genotype (33.3 versus 71.8%, = .03). Patients with PD1.1 AA and PD1.5 CC genotype had 4.21 and 2.62 more chances of presenting relapse and evolving death by disease in Cox analyses, respectively. Our data provide preliminary evidence that abnormalities in regulation of T lymphocyte alter CM risk, clinical aspects, and prognosis.  相似文献

Decomposition rates of Phragmites australis, Carex riparia, Nuphar luteum and Salvinia natans and benthic processes were measured from December 2003 to December 2004 in a shallow wetland (Paludi di Ostiglia, Northern Italy) by means of litter bags and intact cores incubations. Decay rate was highest for N. luteum (k = 0.0152 d−1), intermediate for S. natans (k = 0.0041 d−1) and similar for P. australis (k = 0.0027 d−1) and C. riparia (k = 0.0028 d−1).Benthic metabolism followed a seasonal pattern with summer peaks of O2 demand and TCO2, CH4 and NH4+ efflux whilst soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) fluxes were negligible also under hypoxic conditions, indicating that P was mainly retained by sediment. The initial C:P ratio was similar in N. luteum and S. natans (170) and significantly lower than that of P. australis and C. riparia (360). During the detritus decay P was progressively lost by N. luteum and S. natans tissues, whereas, after an initial leaching, it was probably re-used during the microbial decomposition of the more refractory P. australis and C. riparia detritus. Nuphar luteum, P. australis and S. natans had comparable initial C:N mass ratio (15), significantly lower than that of C. riparia (26). The C:N ratio was rather constant for N. luteum (12.9 ± 1.5) and S. natans (14.6 ± 0.9), decreased slightly to below 20 for C. riparia and increased up to 30 for P. australis. Overall, differences among species were likely due to the recalcitrance of decomposing detritus, whilst process rates were controlled by limitation of microbial processes by nutrients and electron acceptor availability.  相似文献

Encrustation and element content of six charophyte species from two hard‐water lakes were investigated monthly for a period of 1 year. Seasonal patterns were analyzed for the interaction of water chemistry. Encrustation followed a seasonal pattern for Chara contraria, Chara subspinosa, and Nitellopsis obtusa in Lake Krüselin and for Chara globularis and Chara tomentosa in Lake Lützlow. However, no seasonality in the precipitated CaCO3 was observed for C. subspinosa in Lake Lützlow and for C. tomentosa in Lake Krüselin, indicating a lake‐specific dependency. Species‐specific encrustation was found. Chara contraria and N. obtusa encrusted the most in June and August, whereas C. subspinosa and Nitella flexilis/opaca exhibited lowest encrustation in March and April. The precipitated CaCO3 of charophytes correlated negatively to the concentration of total inorganic carbon in both lakes. Element content of plant dry weight was species‐specific for Ca and K, and lake‐specific for Mg. No specific pattern was found for the TP and Fe contents. The results showed seasonal, species, and lake‐specific influences on the encrustation of charophytes.  相似文献

The zooxanthellate octocoral Sinularia flexibilis is a producer of potential pharmaceutically important metabolites such as antimicrobial and cytotoxic substances. Controlled rearing of the coral, as an alternative for commercial exploitation of these compounds, requires the study of species-specific growth requirements. In this study, phototrophic vs. heterotrophic daily energy demands of S. flexibilis was investigated through light and Artemia feeding trials in the laboratory. Rate of photosynthetic oxygen by zooxanthellae in light (≈200 μmol quanta m−2 s−1) was measured for the coral colonies with and without feeding on Artemia nauplii. Respiratory oxygen was measured in the dark, again with and without Artemia nauplii. Photosynthesis–irradiance curve at light intensities of 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 showed an increase in photosynthetic oxygen production up to a light intensity between 100 and 200 μmol quanta m−2 s−1. The photosynthesis to respiration ratio (P/R > 1) confirmed phototrophy of S. flexibilis. Both fed and non-fed colonies in the light showed high carbon contribution by zooxanthellae to animal (host) respiration values of 111–127%. Carbon energy equivalents allocated to the coral growth averaged 6–12% of total photosynthesis energy (mg C g 1 buoyant weight day 1) and about 0.02% of the total daily radiant energy. “Light utilization efficiency (ε)” estimated an average ε value of 75% 12 h 1 for coral practical energetics. This study shows that besides a fundamental role of phototrophy vs. heterotrophy in daily energy budget of S. flexibilis, an efficient fraction of irradiance is converted to useable energy.  相似文献
