The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of one-legged exercise on the strength, power and endurance of the contralateral leg. The performance of the knee extensor and flexor muscle of 20 healthy young adults (10 men and 10 women) was first tested by Cybex II+ and 340 dynamometers. Then 10 subjects were chosen at random to train using one leg three times a week for 7 weeks whilst the other 10 served as controls. During the 8th week, the tests were repeated. Both quadriceps and hamstring muscles of the trained subjects showed a cross-transfer effect from the trained limb to the untrained side. This concerned the strength and power, as well as endurance characteristics of these muscles. The average change in peak torque of the quadriceps muscle was +19% (P less than 0.001) in the trained limb, +11% (P less than 0.01) in the untrained limb and 0% in the control limbs. In hamstring muscles the changes were +14% (P less than 0.01), +5% and -1%, respectively. Concerning muscle endurance (work performed during the last 5 contractions in the 25-repetition test) the corresponding changes were +15% (P less than 0.01), +7% (P less than 0.01), and -1% in quadriceps muscle, and +17% (P less than 0.05), +7%, and -3% in hamstring muscles. The average strength benefit in the untrained limb was +36% (hamstring muscles) and +58% (quadriceps muscle) of that achieved in the trained limb. Untrained hamstring muscle showed better benefits in the endurance parameters than in strength or power parameters, while in the quadriceps muscle this effect was reversed. A positive relationship was observed between the changes (greater improvement in the trained limb resulted in greater improvement in the untrained limb) (hamstring muscles: r = 0.83, P less than 0.001, quadriceps muscle: r = 0.53, P less than 0.001). In endurance parameters, this relationship was almost linear while in the strength and power parameters the results were more in favour of a curvilinear relationship with limited benefit.  相似文献

In chicken Leghorn, blood flow volume speed in pectoralis and gastrocnemius muscles was measured on 15 and 19 day-old embryos and at the 1st and the 10th days alter hatching. It was revealed that in the last quarter of embryogenesis BF in muscles did not vary remaining in both muscles in identical limits. Similar BF parameters in pectoralis and gastrocnemius muscles and their age-dependent dynamics were observed at embryos with the detained development (with the body weight 2-fold less than the norm). After hatching, the blood flow in both muscles was grown, on the average, 2.4-fold and remained high by the 10th day, a little decreasing in the pectoralis muscle. It was shown, that increase of a muscular blood flow after hatching was accompanied by different changes of anatomic lumen of the arteries addressed in pectoralis and gastrocnemius muscles: in the former it decreased, in the latter--increased.  相似文献

Blood flow and glycogen use in hypertrophied rat muscles during exercise   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Previous findings suggest that skeletal muscle that has enlarged as a result of removal of synergistic muscles has a similar metabolic capacity and improved resistance to fatigue compared with normal muscle. The purpose of the present study was to follow blood flow and glycogen loss patterns in hypertrophied rat plantaris plantaris and soleus muscles during treadmill exercise to provide information on the adequacy of perfusion of the muscles during in vivo exercise. Thirty days following surgical removal of gastrocnemius muscle, blood flows (determined with radiolabeled microspheres) and glycogen concentrations were determined in all of the ankle extensor muscles of experimental and sham-operated control rats during preexercise and after 5-6 min of treadmill exercise at 15 m/min. There were no differences (P greater than 0.05) in blood flows per unit mass or glycogen concentrations between control and hypertrophied plantaris or soleus muscles at either time, although both muscles were larger (P less than 0.05) in the experimental group (plantaris: 95%; soleus: 40%). None of the other secondary ankle extensor muscles (tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum longus or flexor hallicus longus) hypertrophied in response to removal of gastrocnemius. These results provide indirect evidence that O2 delivery in the enlarged muscles is not compromised during low-intensity treadmill exercise due to limited perfusion.  相似文献

Maximal vascular leg conductance in trained and untrained men   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Lower leg blood flow and vascular conductance were studied and related to maximal oxygen uptake in 15 sedentary men (28.5 +/- 1.2 yr, mean +/- SE) and 11 endurance-trained men (30.5 +/- 2.0 yr). Blood flows were obtained at rest and during reactive hyperemia produced by ischemic exercise to fatigue. Vascular conductance was computed from blood flow measured by venous occlusion plethysmography, and mean arterial blood pressure was determined by auscultation of the brachial artery. Resting blood flow and mean arterial pressure were similar in both groups (combined mean, 3.0 ml X min-1 X 100 ml-1 and 88.2 mmHg). After ischemic exercise, blood flows were 29- and 19-fold higher (P less than 0.001) than rest in trained (83.3 +/- 3.8 ml X min-1 X 100 ml-1) and sedentary subjects (61.5 +/- 2.3 ml X min-1 X 100 ml-1), respectively. Blood pressure and heart rate were only slightly elevated in both groups. Maximal vascular conductance was significantly higher (P less than 0.001) in the trained compared with the sedentary subjects. The correlation coefficients for maximal oxygen uptake vs. vascular conductance were 0.81 (trained) and 0.45 (sedentary). These data suggest that physical training increases the capacity for vasodilation in active limbs and also enables the trained individual to utilize a larger fraction of maximal vascular conductance than the sedentary subject.  相似文献

1. Growth of breast and leg muscles and excretion of N tau methyl histidine in layer (slow growing) and broiler (fast growing) chicks were measured at five time intervals between 2 and 33 days of age. 2. The results indicate that muscles of the broiler chick grow faster than in layer chicks and that breast muscles of both strains grow faster than leg muscles in the first 2 weeks after hatching. 3. N tau methyl histidine excretion by layer chicks is higher than that by broilers relative to body weight, musculature and relative maturity at all ages examined. 4. The results suggest that faster growth of muscles is accompanied by a lower rate of protein degradation although at ages of less than 2 weeks differences in protein synthesis rates may also contribute to muscle growth.  相似文献

This study evaluated the hypothesis that active muscle blood flow is lower during exercise at a given submaximal power output after aerobic conditioning as a result of unchanged cardiac output and blunted splanchnic vasoconstriction. Eight untrained subjects (4 men, 4 women, 23-31 yr) performed high-intensity aerobic training for 9-12 wk. Leg blood flow (femoral vein thermodilution), splanchnic blood flow (indocyanine green clearance), cardiac output (acetylene rebreathing), whole body O(2) uptake (VO(2)), and arterial-venous blood gases were measured before and after training at identical submaximal power outputs (70 and 140 W; upright 2-leg cycling). Training increased (P < 0.05) peak VO(2) (12-36%) but did not significantly change submaximal VO(2) or cardiac output. Leg blood flow during both submaximal power outputs averaged 18% lower after training (P = 0.001; n = 7), but these reductions were not correlated with changes in splanchnic vasoconstriction. Submaximal leg VO(2) was also lower after training. These findings support the hypothesis that aerobic training reduces active muscle blood flow at a given submaximal power output. However, changes in leg and splanchnic blood flow resulting from high-intensity training may not be causally linked.  相似文献

The effects of added load (20% of body mass) on the selected enzyme activities of red and white quadriceps femoris (QF), soleus, and gastrocnemius muscles of rats were studied. The rats were divided into sedentary control (SC), sedentary control with added load (SC+AL), endurance training (ET), and endurance training with added load (ET+AL) groups (n = 10 rats/group). After 6 wk, the SC+AL group had 57% higher (P less than 0.001) beta-glucuronidase (beta-GU) activity and 24% lower (P less than 0.05) citrate synthase activity in white QF than SC. Citrate synthase activity was also decreased in red QF (P less than 0.05) after the added load was used during nontraining hours. The training with added load induced similar but more pronounced changes than normal endurance training, especially in white QF. The ET+AL group demonstrated higher citrate synthase activity in white QF (P less than 0.001) and gastrocnemius (P less than 0.01) and higher malate dehydrogenase activity (P less than 0.05) and beta-GU activity (P less than 0.001) in white QF than the ET group. ET+AL rats also had higher phosphofructokinase (P less than 0.01) and lower creatine kinase (P less than 0.001) activity in white QF than ET rats. In conclusion, the added load without training had minor adaptive influences on muscles. The added load during training hours seemed to be an effective means of influencing the activation and adaptation in muscles that contain fast glycolytic fibers.  相似文献

Blood flow was measured in leg and torso skin of conscious or anesthetized sheep by using 15-micron radioactive microspheres (Qm) and the 133Xe washout method (QXe). There was a good relationship between Qm in the cutaneous compartment and QXe calculated from the fast component of the biexponential washout curves (QXe = 0.40.Qm + 6.2, r = 0.90, P less than 0.001) with QXe values substantially below those determined with microspheres. Only at low blood flow levels was there a tendency for QXe to overestimate capillary blood flow as assessed with microspheres, but at higher blood flow levels the 133Xe washout method resulted in values substantially below those determined with microspheres. The slope of the slow component of the washout curves was inversely related to the tissue-blood partition coefficient in the subcutaneous tissue (r = 0.52, P less than 0.001), indicating an influence of the amount of subcutaneous fat on the washout rate. QXe calculated from the slow component of the washout curves was not significantly correlated with Qm in the subcutaneous compartment (r = 0.19, P greater than 0.10). In leg skin with dilated arteriovenous anastomoses, QXe was generally higher than in torso skin and leg skin with constricted arteriovenous anastomoses, indicating that shunt blood flow increases the washout of 133Xe.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of single- and multiple-set strength training on hypertrophy and strength gains in untrained men. Twenty-one young men were randomly assigned to either the 3L-1UB group (trained 3 sets in leg exercises and 1 set in upper-body exercises; n = 11), or the 1L-3UB (trained 1 set in leg exercises and 3 sets in upper-body exercises; n = 10). Subjects trained 3 days per week for 11 weeks and each workout consisted of 3 leg exercises and 5 upper-body exercises. Training intensity varied between 10 repetition maximum (RM) and 7RM. Strength (1RM) was tested in all leg and upper-body exercises and in 2 isokinetic tests before training, and after 3, 6, 9, and 11 weeks of training. Cross sectional area (CSA) of thigh muscles and the trapezius muscle and body composition measures were performed before training, and after 5 and 11 weeks of training. The increase in 1RM from week 0 to 11 in the lower-body exercises was significantly higher in the 3L-1UB group than in the 1L-3UB group (41 vs. 21%; p < 0.001), while no difference existed between groups in upper-body exercises. Peak torque in maximal isokinetic knee-extension and thigh CSA increased more in the 3L-1UB group than in the 1L-3UB group (16 vs. 8%; p = 0.03 and 11 vs. 7%; p = 0.01, respectively), while there was no significant difference between groups in upper trapezius muscle CSA. The results demonstrate that 3-set strength training is superior to 1-set strength training with regard to strength and muscle mass gains in the leg muscles, while no difference exists between 1- and 3-set training in upper-body muscles in untrained men.  相似文献

Adaptations in coactivation after isometric resistance training.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Twenty sedentary male university students were randomly assigned to an experimental or a control group. The experimental group trained the knee extensors of one leg by producing 30 isometric extension maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) per day, three times per week for 8 wk. After 8 wk of training, extensor MVC in the trained leg increased 32.8% (P less than 0.05), but there was no change in vastus lateralis maximal integrated electromyographic activity (IEMGmax). The most important finding was that the degree of hamstring coactivation during extension MVC decreased by approximately 20% (P less than 0.05) after the 1st wk of training. Less pronounced adaptations occurred in the untrained leg: extension MVC force increased 16.2% (P less than 0.05), hamstring coactivity decreased 13% (P less than 0.05) after 2 wk of training, and vastus lateralis IEMGmax was unchanged. The same measures in legs of the control group were not changed during the study. There were no changes in flexion MVC, biceps femoris IEMGmax, or the degree of quadriceps coactivity during flexion MVC in either leg of the control or experimental group. A reduction in hamstring coactivity in the trained and untrained legs indicates that these muscles provide less opposing force to the contracting quadriceps. We conclude that this small but significant decrease in hamstring coactivation that occurs during the early stages of training is a nonhypertrophic adaptation of the neuromuscular system in response to static resistance training of this type.  相似文献

A recent study showed good correlation between regional blood flow (BF) and oxygen uptake (Vo(2)) 30 min after exhaustive exercise. The question that remains open is whether there is similar good correlation between BF and Vo(2) also during exercise. We reanalyzed our previous data from a study in which BF and Vo(2) was measured in different quadriceps femoris muscles in seven healthy endurance-trained and seven healthy untrained men at rest and during low-intensity intermittent static knee-extension exercise (Kalliokoski KK, Oikonen V, Takala TO, Sipila H, Knuuti J, and Nuutila P. Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 280: E1015-E1021, 2001). When the mean values of each muscle were considered, there was good correlation between BF and Vo(2) during exercise in both groups (r(2) = 0.82 in untrained and 0.97 in trained). However, when calculated individually, the correlations were poorer, and the mean correlation coefficient (r(2)) was significantly higher in the trained men (0.71 +/- 0.07 vs. 0.40 +/- 0.11, P = 0.03). These results suggest that there is large individual variation in matching BF to Vo(2) in human skeletal muscles during exercise, ranging from very poor to excellent. Furthermore, this matching seems to be better in the endurance-trained than in untrained men.  相似文献

Previous work has suggested that preexercise "anticipatory" blood flow distribution in the muscles of rats is influenced by the intensity of the preceding conditioning or training program. The purpose of this study was to carefully control the conditioning programs for control, low-speed conditioned, and high-speed conditioned rats to determine the respective effects on preexercise mean arterial pressure (Pa), heart rate (HR), and blood flow distribution in muscles and other organs. Control (daily placement on treadmill, no exercise), low-speed conditioned (daily treadmill walking up a 12 degree incline at 15 m/min), and high-speed conditioned (daily treadmill galloping up a 12 degree incline at 50 m/min) rats were conditioned for 2-4 wk in their respective programs. On the experimental day, the circulatory variables were measured immediately before exercise by using the same preexercise regimen as during the conditioning sessions. Pa, HR, and blood flow distribution were the same in control and low-speed conditioned rats (P greater than 0.05). However, in high-speed conditioned rats, HR (+9%), Pa (+7%), and white gastrocnemius muscle (+46%) blood flow were higher than in controls (P less than 0.05). The higher white muscle flow was the result of the higher Pa and lower resistance to flow. These data demonstrate that specific changes in preexercise anticipatory blood flow distribution among muscles occur during exercise conditioning programs and that the changes are dependent on the intensity of the conditioning regimen. The mechanisms responsible for the adaptations are not known.  相似文献

Interorgan cooperativity in carnitine metabolism in the trained state   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study was designed to evaluate the effects of chronic exercise training on carnitine acetyl- and palmitoyltransferase activity and the distribution of carnitine forms and concentrations in various organs and tissues of female rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were swim trained 6 days/wk and progressed to 75-min swims twice daily (with 3% of their total body weight attached to the medial portion of the tail) at the end of 5 wk of training. Sedentary (S, n = 12) and trained (T, n = 13) animals were killed by decapitation, and the livers, kidneys, hearts, and several skeletal muscle types were removed and immediately frozen in liquid N2 and/or extracted for enzyme activity assays. Blood was collected and plasma was stored frozen. Samples were assayed for free, acid-soluble, and acid-insoluble carnitine. Free carnitine increased significantly (P less than 0.03) in T hearts. Free carnitine remained unchanged in liver, but short-chain acylcarnitines increased significantly (P less than 0.001). There was a significant (P less than 0.001) reduction in long-chain acylcarnitines in kidney in the trained rats, and plasma short-chain acylcarnitine levels also decreased (P less than 0.001). Several significant changes in carnitine distribution also occurred in the superficial and deep portions of the vastus lateralis and in the mixed gastrocnemius muscles. There was a significant reduction in carnitine acetyltransferase activity with training in both the soleus (P less than 0.02) and superficial gastrocnemius (P less than 0.002) muscles. The deep portion of the gastrocnemius muscle contained significantly higher activity than either the superficial portion or the soleus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Aerobic endurance capacity is partly dependent on blood supply to and metabolic capacity of the active muscles. Recordings of lower limb skin postocclusive hyperaemia with laser Doppler flowmetry can differentiate between patients with lower limb atherosclerosis and healthy controls. In this study, we investigated the relationship between aerobic endurance, calf volume, common femoral artery diameter and time properties of the postocclusive laser Doppler curve. A group of 16 healthy male subjects with values for aerobic endurance which varied from those of untrained men to elite endurance trained athletes were examined. Duration of laser Doppler recorded skin postocclusive hyperaemia was significantly correlated to both aerobic power and anaerobic threshold (P less than 0.01). Hyperaemia in subjects with large common femoral artery diameter was of shorter duration (P less than 0.05). The peak and mean body mass related blood flow during hyperaemia was correlated to anaerobic threshold (P less than 0.05). These results were in agreement with previous studies indicating an effect of endurance training on the blood supply to the muscles concerned.  相似文献

Aerobic fitness may be associated with reduced orthostatic tolerance. To investigate whether trained individuals have less effective regulation of cerebral vascular resistance, we studied the middle cerebral artery (MCA) mean blood velocity (V(mean)) response to a sudden drop in mean arterial pressure (MAP) after 2.5 min of leg ischemia in endurance athletes and untrained subjects (maximal O(2) uptake: 69 ± 7 vs. 42 ± 5 ml O(2)·min(-1)·kg(-1); n = 9 for both, means ± SE). After cuff release when seated, endurance athletes had larger drops in MAP (94 ± 6 to 62 ± 5 mmHg, -39%, vs. 99 ± 5 to 73 ± 4 mmHg, -26%) and MCA V(mean) (53 ± 3 to 37 ± 2 cm/s, -30%, vs. 58 ± 3 to 43 ± 2 cm/s, -25%). The athletes also had a slower recovery to baseline of both MAP (25 ± 2 vs. 16 ± 1 s, P < 0.01) and MCA V(mean) (15 ± 1 vs. 11 ± 1 s, P < 0.05). The onset of autoregulation, determined by the time point of increase in the cerebrovascular conductance index (CVCi = MCA V(mean)/MAP) appeared later in the athletes (3.9 ± 0.4 vs. 2.7 ± 0.4s, P = 0.01). Spectral analysis revealed a normal MAP-to-MCA V(mean) phase in both groups but ~40% higher normalized MAP to MCA V(mean) low-frequency transfer function gain in the trained subjects. No significant differences were detected in the rates of recovery of MAP and MCA V(mean) and the rate of CVCi regulation (18 ± 4 vs. 24 ± 7%/s, P = 0.2). In highly trained endurance athletes, a drop in blood pressure after the release of resting leg ischemia was more pronounced than in untrained subjects and was associated with parallel changes in indexes of cerebral blood flow. Once initiated, the autoregulatory response was similar between the groups. A delayed onset of autoregulation with a larger normalized transfer gain conforms with a less effective dampening of MAP oscillations, indicating that athletes may be more prone to instances of symptomatic cerebral hypoperfusion when MAP declines.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the increased sympathetic activity elicited by the upright posture on blood flow to exercising human forearm muscles. Six subjects performed light and heavy rhythmic forearm exercise. Trials were conducted with the subjects supine and standing. Forearm blood flow (FBF, plethysmography) and skin blood flow (laser Doppler) were measured during brief pauses in the contractions. Arterial blood pressure and heart rate were also measured. During the first 6 min of light exercise, blood flow was similar in the supine and standing positions (approximately 15 ml.min-1.100 ml-1); from minutes 7 to 20 FBF was approximately 3-7 ml.min-1.100 ml-1 less in the standing position (P less than 0.05). When 5 min of heavy exercise immediately followed the light exercise, FBF was approximately 30-35 ml.min-1.100 ml-1 in the supine position. These values were approximately 8-12 ml.min-1.100 ml-1 greater than those observed in the upright position (P less than 0.05). When light exercise did not precede 8 min of heavy exercise, the blood flow at the end of minute 1 was similar in the supine and standing positions but was approximately 6-9 ml.min-1.100 ml-1 lower in the standing position during minutes 2-8. Heart rate was always approximately 10-20 beats higher in the upright position (P less than 0.05). Forearm skin blood flow and mean arterial pressure were similar in the two positions, indicating that the changes in FBF resulted from differences in the caliber of the resistance vessels in the forearm muscles.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

1. The effect of hypocaloric feeding (25% of normal food intake for 21 days) of rats on the enzymic and metabolic adaptations in the gastrocnemius, plantaris and soleus muscles was studied. 2. In control and hypocaloric rats the muscle relaxation rates at 100 Hz were 35.76 and 11.38% force loss/10 ms respectively. Control rats exhibited enhanced force of muscle contraction as the frequency of stimulation increased from 10 to 100 Hz, with maximum force being at 100 Hz. Hypocaloric rats exhibited a decrease in the increment of force being exerted at high frequencies, with maintenance of force at lower stimulatory frequencies. 3. In muscles of hypocaloric rats, there were significant decreases in the maximal activities of hexokinase (17.6-37.0%), 6-phosphofructokinase (22.7-34.2%), pyruvate kinase (21.2-36.0%), citrate synthase (34.1-41.5%), oxoglutarate dehydrogenase (29.4-52.4%) and 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (26.7-32.1%), whereas the activities of glycogen phosphorylase increased (23.8-43.4%) compared with control values. 4. In soleus-muscle strip preparations of hypocaloric rats, there were significant decreases in the rates of lactate production (28.1%) and glucose oxidation (32.6%) compared with control preparations. 5. Mitochondrial preparations from muscles of hypocaloric rats incubated with various substrates exhibited decreased rates of oxygen uptake compared with control preparations. 6. In muscles of hypocaloric rats (gastrocnemius and soleus), there were significant decreases in the concentrations of glycogen (P less than 0.001) and phosphocreatine (P less than 0.001) and increases in those of pyruvate (P less than 0.001), lactate (P less than 0.001) and ADP (P less than 0.001), whereas those of ATP and AMP remained unchanged. 7. Calculated [lactate]/[pyruvate] and [ATP]/[ADP] ratios exhibited significant increases (P less than 0.05) and decreases (P less than 0.05) in muscles of hypocaloric rats respectively. 8. The results are discussed in relation to the genesis of muscle dysfunction caused by malnutrition.  相似文献

Four male subjects aged 23-34 years were studied during 60 days of unilateral strength training and 40 days of detraining. Training was carried out four times a week and consisted of six series of ten maximal isokinetic knee extensions at an angular velocity of 2.09 rad.s-1. At the start and at every 20th day of training and detraining, isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), integrated electromyographic activity (iEMG) and quadriceps muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) assessed at seven fractions of femur length (Lf), by nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, were measured on both trained (T) and untrained (UT) legs. Isokinetic torques at 30 degrees before full knee extension were measured before and at the end of training at: 0, 1.05, 2.09, 3.14, 4.19, 5.24 rad.s-1. After 60 days T leg CSA had increased by 8.5% +/- 1.4% (mean +/- SEM, n = 4, p less than 0.001), iEMG by 42.4% +/- 16.5% (p less than 0.01) and MVC by 20.8% +/- 5.4% (p less than 0.01). Changes during detraining had a similar time course to those of training. No changes in UT leg CSA were observed while iEMG and MVC increased by 24.8% +/- 10% (N.S.) and 8.7% +/- 4.3% (N.S.), respectively. The increase in quadriceps muscle CSA was maximal at 2/10 Lf (12.0% +/- 1.5%, p less than 0.01) and minimal, proximally to the knee, at 8/10 Lf (3.5% +/- 1.2%, N.S.). Preferential hypertrophy of the vastus medialis and intermedius muscles compared to those of the rectus femoris and lateralis muscles was observed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

13C-NMR measurements of muscle glycogen during low-intensity exercise   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Glycogen metabolism in exercising gastrocnemius muscles was examined by natural abundance 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Five-minute 13C-NMR measurement of muscle glycogen had a reproducibility of +/- 6.5% (+/- 4.8 mM). Experiments were performed on healthy fed male and female subjects. Two protocols were followed. 1) Subjects performed plantar flexion from rest at 15, 20, or 25% of maximum voluntary contraction for up to 9 h. 2) Subjects predepleted gastrocnemius glycogen with heavy exercise and then either performed low-intensity exercise as before or rested. Gastrocnemius glycogen was measured by NMR at rest and after each hour of exercise. In some sessions, both the exercised leg and the nonexercised leg were monitored with 13C-NMR. In protocol 1, blood velocity in the femoral artery was similarly assessed with ultrasonography. During low-intensity exercise from rest (protocol 1) muscle glycogen fell to a new steady-state value after several hours and then remained constant despite continued exercise. Mean blood velocity increased ninefold within 2 min of onset of exercise and remained constant thereafter. After predepletion (protocol 2), muscle glycogen was repleted both during low-intensity exercise and at rest. After 1 h the amount of glycogen repletion was greater when coupled with light exercise [48.5 +/- 2.8 mM after 1 h of exercise, 39.7 +/- 1.1 mM after 1 h of rest (P less than 0.05)]. During subsequent light exercise, glycogen reached a steady-state value similar to that obtained in protocol 1, while in resting, recovery glycogen levels continued to increase (+2.7 mM/h) over a 7-h period.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in combination with indocyanine green (ICG) dye has recently been used to measure respiratory muscle blood flow (RMBF) in humans. This method is based on the Fick principle and is determined by measuring ICG in the respiratory muscles using transcutaneous NIRS in relation to the [ICG] in arterial blood as measured using photodensitometry. This method is invasive since it requires arterial cannulation, repeated blood withdrawals, and reinfusions. A less invasive alternative is to calculate a relative measure of blood flow known as the blood flow index (BFI), which is based solely on the NIRS ICG curve, thus negating the need for arterial cannulation. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to determine whether BFI can be used to measure RMBF at rest and during voluntary isocapnic hyperpnea at 25, 40, 55, and 70% of maximal voluntary ventilation in seven healthy humans. BFI was calculated as the change in maximal [ICG] divided by the rise time of the NIRS-derived ICG curve. Intercostal and sternocleidomastoid muscle BFI were correlated with simultaneously measured work of breathing and electromyography (EMG) data from the same muscles. BFI showed strong relationships with the work of breathing and EMG for both respiratory muscles. The coefficients of determination (R(2)) comparing BFI vs. the work of breathing for the intercostal and sternocleidomastoid muscles were 0.887 (P < 0.001) and 0.863 (P < 0.001), respectively, whereas the R(2) for BFI vs. EMG for the intercostal and sternocleidomastoid muscles were 0.879 (P < 0.001) and 0.930 (P < 0.001), respectively. These data suggest that the BFI closely reflects RMBF in conscious humans across a wide range of ventilations and provides a less invasive and less technically demanding alternative to measuring RMBF.  相似文献
