An increasing number of persons with health symptoms of unclear origin take refuge in the hypothesis that they suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). So far EHS is not an accepted diagnosis and there is no validated test to verify the proposed relationship between electromagnetic fields and symptoms. Groups reporting EHS are very heterogeneous but share a belief that they have an increased sensitivity to electromagnetic fields. It was studied to which extent a quantitative indicator for electrosensitivity, the electric current perception threshold, and its variability coefficient, depend on the recruitment strategy for self-declared hypersensitive persons. Individual electrosensitivity was investigated by provocation of the lower arms to directly coupled 50 Hz electric currents. Self-declared EHS persons were selected from members of a self aid group, from responders to a newspaper call, and from persons actively asking for investigations in their search for help. It turned out that quantitative electrosensitivity was quite different among the three groups. It is interesting that the members of the EHS self aid group exhibit a considerable overlap with general population sample. Pooled together it could be shown that hypersensitive persons as a group differ significantly from the general population sample, however with a pronounced overlap with the normal range. It can be concluded that EHS groups are very inhomogeneous and contain numerous persons with no increased ability to perceive low frequency electric or magnetic fields. This investigation shows the importance of the study design, in particular of the recruitment strategies of EHS persons for the final outcome.  相似文献

Despite its importance for the assessment of the effects of electric current and for technical safety considerations, not only does the electric perception threshold remain uncertain, but essential questions are still unanswered and contradictions unresolved. Via measurements at 908 persons randomly selected from the general population, including 708 adults (349 men, 359 women aged between 16 and 60 years), the problems of extrapolation to the general population and adequate statistical representation have now been overcome for the first time. The results show that existing assumptions about electric current perception need to be drastically corrected. It has been shown that the assumed electric perception threshold has been too high by a factor of 10, and that women are substantially more sensitive than men. This means that present gender-specific differences in electrosensitivity need revising. On the basis of the evidence of significant underestimation of the reaction variability in the general population, present assumptions on safety limits and safety factors urgently need to be reviewed. By no means can a relaxation of safety regulations be justified.  相似文献

Although the threshold for electric current perception is of great importance for safety considerations and safety regulations, important aspects remain unsolved, e.g. the role of age or body size. In the present study measurements of the perception threshold were performed in 790 persons aged between 18 and 82 years randomly selected from the general population. For the first time, the composition and size of the sample were selected such as to allow extrapolation to the general population. The results reveal not only statistically significant gender differences in the perception threshold but also statistically significant relationships between perception threshold and body size. The assumption that the differences in body size between men and women are responsible for the gender-specific difference in electric current perception threshold was not confirmed in this study.  相似文献

Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex by single pulses of varying field intensities was used to measure thresholds of individual perception and motor response in three groups of subjects: subjectively electrosensitive people, general population controls with a high burden of complaints related to electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure in the literature (highest decile in complaint burden), and general population controls with a low burden of complaints (lowest decile in complaint burden). The major study endpoint was the ability of the subjects to differentiate between real magnetic stimulation and a sham condition. There were no significant differences between groups in the thresholds, neither of detecting the real magnetic stimulus nor in motor response. But the three groups differed significantly in differentiating between stimulation and sham condition, with the subjectively electrosensitive people having the lowest ability to differentiate and the control group with high level of EMF-related complaints having the best ability to differentiate. Differences between groups were mostly due to false alarm reactions in the sham condition reported by subjectively electrosensitives (SES). We found no objective correlate of the self perception of being "electrosensitive." Overall, our experiment does not support the hypothesis that subjectively electrosensitive patients suffer from a physiological hypersensitivity to EMFs or stimuli. Further research should focus on disposing factors explaining the unspecific sensory hyperresponsiveness of subjectively electrosensitive subjects.  相似文献

The consensus scientific view is that there is an absence of convincing scientific evidence for health risks of exposures to electromagnetic fields (EMF) at levels below those recommended in international guidelines. Nevertheless, some citizens are worried about EMF emitted by mobile communication and its consequences for health. The present study explored, by means of a mail survey, health concerns and the prevalence of health beliefs related to EMF in the general population. A random sample (n = 765, response rate 41%) of the German-speaking population in Switzerland was asked to assess various health beliefs. Results suggest that health concerns are widespread but lower than health concerns in regard to other hazards. About two-thirds of the respondents believed that some people suffer from electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). Health beliefs items were analyzed using the Mokken scale. This scale was related to respondents' health concerns and showed that health beliefs differed in regard to sociodemographic variables. For example, analyses showed that females, younger respondents, and respondents who believed that some people are affected by EHS endorsed significantly more health beliefs than males, older respondents, and non-EHS respondents. Results indicate that it is important for policy-makers to develop a clear understanding of the possible effects of health beliefs on health concerns and risk perception. These findings may provide guidance for the further development of information materials and strategies.  相似文献

The main interest in epidemic models stems from their use in uncovering certain qualitative features of epidemic processes. A deterministic model of a general epidemic in a population with an arbitrary number of separate population centers is presented. The mixing within each center is assumed to be homogeneous, and the usual threshold theorem holds for each population. The mixing between centers is nonhomogeneous. This model is used to identify the necessary and sufficient conditions under which a disease will become endemic in the general population when each population center is below the threshold required for establishment of the disease and does not mix with other centers. These conditions depend critically on the concavity of the infection rate function with respect to the length of exposure time. The application of these results to host-vector models is discussed.  相似文献

Despite of the fact that environmental electric and magnetic fields are magnitudes below the existing limits, fear from electromagnetic pollution increase and so does business with fear by offering more or less plausible products with partly excessively high prices . Based on numerical simulation the claims of manufacturers on the efficiency of electromagnetic shielding mats were tested. It is pretended that electric fields can be shielded to 98% and more, and transferred to earth by earth cables (if attached). It could be shown that in general such products do not fulfil the justified expectations of customers, but in contrary even cause the opposite. To connect the mats with earth potential by an attached cable might increase the beliefs on a protective effect, however, this is not capable to enhance the shielding effect but in most cases this causes even the contrary by partly considerably increasing electric field exposure. The electric conductivity of the used shielding mats plays a neglectable role and cannot explain the considerable price differences. The investigation demonstrates that in spite of references made to expert's opinions manufacturer's claims about the shielding efficiency are misleading and fooling clients about the real situation.  相似文献

With the number of cellular phone users rapidly increasing, there is a considerable amount of public concern regarding the effects that electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from cellular phones have on health. People with self‐attributed electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) complain of subjective symptoms such as headaches, insomnia, and memory loss, and attribute these symptoms to radio frequency (RF) radiation from cellular phones and/or base stations. However, EHS is difficult to diagnose because it relies on a person's subjective judgment. Various provocation studies have been conducted on EHS caused by Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) phones in which heart rate and blood pressure or subjective symptoms were investigated. However, there have been few sham‐controlled provocation studies on EHS with Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) phones where physiological parameters, subjective symptoms, and perception of RF radiation for EHS and non‐EHS groups were simultaneously investigated. In this study, two volunteer groups of 18 self‐reported EHS and 19 non‐EHS persons were tested for both sham and real RF exposure from CDMA cellular phones with a 300 mW maximum exposure that lasted half an hour. We investigated not only the physiological parameters such as heart rate, respiration rate, and heart rate variability (HRV), but also various subjective symptoms and the perception of EMF. In conclusion, RF exposure did not have any effects on physiological parameters or subjective symptoms in either group. As for EMF perception, there was no evidence that the EHS group better perceived EMF than the non‐EHS group. Bioelectromagnetics 30:641–650, 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In this article, the exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields was studied in close proximity (distances of 10, 100, 300, and 600 mm) to six base station antennas. The specific absorption rate (SAR) in 800 mm × 500 mm × 200 mm box phantom as well as unperturbed electric field (E) in air was measured. The results were used to determine whether the measurement of local maximum of unperturbed electric field can be used as a compliance check for local exposure. Also, the conservativeness of this assessment method compared to the ICNIRP basic restriction was studied. Moreover, the assessment of whole‐body exposure was discussed and the distance ranges presented in which the ICNIRP limit for local exposure could be exceeded before the limit for whole‐body SAR. These results show that the electric field measurement alone can be used for easy compliance check for the local exposure at all distances and for all antenna types studied. However, in some cases when the local peak value of E was compared directly to the ICNIRP reference level for unperturbed E, the exposure was overestimated only very slightly (by factor 1.1) compared to the basic restriction for localized SAR in a human, and hence these results can not be generalized to all antenna types. Moreover, it was shown that the limit for localized exposure could be exceeded before the limit for the whole‐body average SAR, if the distance to the antenna was less than 240 mm. The relation between the incident electromagnetic field strength and both the whole‐body and the local specific absorption rate (SAR) was investigated for typical heterogeneous exposure scenarios for frequencies relevant for mobile communication. The results were compared to results from plane wave exposure. Heterogeneous exposure arises from multiple path propagation of the electromagnetic waves to the location of interest. It is shown that plane wave exposure does not represent worst‐case exposure conditions. When the electric field strength arising at plane wave exposure is compared to the electric field strength averaged over the volume of the human body occurring during multipath exposure, 12% of all heterogeneous cases examined represent worse exposure conditions than plane wave exposure for whole‐body exposure at 946 MHz, 15% at 1840 MHz, and 22% at 2140 MHz. The deviation between plane wave and heterogeneous whole‐body SAR ranges from ?54% to 54%. For partial‐body SAR averaged over 10 g of tissue, a range from ?93% to 209% was found when comparing multiple wave exposure to single incoming plane waves. The investigations performed using the Visible Human as phantom showed that the basic restrictions are met as long as the reference levels are not exceeded. However, this must not be necessarily the case when different phantoms are used to perform similar investigations because recent studies demonstrated that reference levels might not be conservative when phantoms of children are used. Therefore, the results of this work indicate the need to extend the investigations to numerical simulations with additional human phantoms representing parts of the human population having different anatomy and morphology compared to the phantom used within the frame of this project. This also applies to phantoms of children. Bioelectromagnetics 30:651–662, 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

It could already be shown that electromagnetic shielding mats do not reduce but even enhance electric field exposure in daily life situations. By measurements and numerical simulations the claims of manufacturers were checked who pretend that radio frequency electromagnetic fields can be shielded to 99% and more, and transferred to earth by earth cables (if attached). It could be shown that in the radio frequency range such products do not fulfil the justified expectations of customers, but in most cases even cause the opposite. The results depend on the electric properties of the material. Good electric conductivity of shielding mats even considerably increases electromagnetic field exposure. To connect the mats with earth potential by an attached cable might increase the beliefs on a protective effect, however, this is not capable to enhance the shielding effect. The investigation demonstrates that in spite of references made to experts opinions manufacturers claims about the shielding efficiency of radio frequency fields are misleading and fool clients about the real situation. Overall, acquisition and use of electrosmog shielding mats must be discouraged. If at all, shielding can be reached by placing a shielding cover between the source and the person. However, even in this case, efficiency is much lower than promised by manufacturers and decreases even more if it is taken into account that the head naturally remains uncovered and hence unshielded.  相似文献

Background

Exposure to electromagnetic field (EMF) emitted by mobile phone and other machineries concerns half the world’s population and raises the problem of their impact on human health. The present study aims to explore the effects of electromagnetic field exposures on sleep quality and sleep duration among workers from electric power plant.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted in an electric power plant of Zhejiang Province, China. A total of 854 participants were included in the final analysis. The detailed information of participants was obtained by trained investigators using a structured questionnaire, which including socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle variables, sleep variables and electromagnetic exposures. Physical examination and venous blood collection were also carried out for every study subject.

Results

After grouping daily occupational electromagnetic exposure into three categories, subjects with long daily exposure time had a significantly higher risk of poor sleep quality in comparison to those with short daily exposure time. The adjusted odds ratios were 1.68 (95%CI: 1.18, 2.39) and 1.57 (95%CI: 1.10, 2.24) across tertiles. Additionally, among the subjects with long-term occupational exposure, the longer daily occupational exposure time apparently increased the risk of poor sleep quality (OR (95%CI): 2.12 (1.23∼3.66) in the second tertile; 1.83 (1.07∼3.15) in the third tertile). There was no significant association of long-term occupational exposure duration, monthly electric fee or years of mobile-phone use with sleep quality or sleep duration.

Conclusions

The findings showed that daily occupational EMF exposure was positively associated with poor sleep quality. It implies EMF exposure may damage human sleep quality rather than sleep duration.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationship between the force applied to a finger and the differential threshold of the force. Further, it presented an improvement function for tactile perception in archers by adapting to circumstances in which enhanced tactile perception and finger dexterity are required to practice archery on a daily basis. For this purpose, a tactile display using an air jet was developed. The air was aimed at the center of the fingertip of the index finger. The inner diameter of the nozzle was set to 3 mm. In this study, a psychophysical experiment was conducted to obtain the differential threshold from two subject groups-an archery athlete group and a control group. A total of six levels of standard stimuli ranging from 2.0 gf to 7.0 gf was obtained. As a result, the differential threshold of the archery group was significantly higher than that of the control group. The Weber ratio of the archery group remained around 0.13 and that of control group was 0.10. The experiment also revealed that the differential threshold for archers exhibited less fluctuation between the trials and between the days, which implied that the tactile perception of archery athletes may be more stable than that of non-experienced subjects. This may be a plasticity property of tactile perception.  相似文献

Pain is an unpleasant sensation. It warns the living being about the impending damage to the tissues. The perception of pain is influenced by physical and psychological factors. The impact of chronic intermittent psychological stress on pain perception and the differences in antinociceptive responses have been studied in male and anestrous female albino rats. Fifteen rats in each group were subjected to psychological stress, by exposing them to their natural predator--cat, for a duration of 20 min daily for 12 consecutive days. Tail flick response latency to radiant heat was used as a measure to evaluate pain perception. It was observed that both the groups had a relatively high pain threshold at the beginning of exposure schedule due to the modulation of opioid analgesic system by the higher level of circulating testosterone in males and low level of estrogen in anaestrous females. However, the threshold for pain perception showed a gradually declining trend in both the groups over the next 11 days to reach the control values. This increase in sensitivity to pain or decreased pain threshold could be attributed to the phenomenon of habituation.  相似文献

With increasing electrical device usage, social concerns about the possible effects of 60 Hz electromagnetic fields on human health have increased. The number of people with self‐attributed electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) who complain of various subjective symptoms such as headache and insomnia has also increased. However, it is unclear whether EHS results from physiological or other origins. In this double‐blinded study, we simultaneously investigated physiological changes (heart rate, respiration rate, and heart rate variability), subjective symptoms, and perception of the magnetic field to assess origins of the subjective symptoms. Two volunteer groups of 15 self‐reported EHS and 16 non‐EHS individuals were tested with exposure to sham and real (60 Hz, 12.5 µT) magnetic fields for 30 min. Magnetic field exposure did not have any effects on physiological parameters or eight subjective symptoms in either group. There was also no evidence that the EHS group perceived the magnetic field better than the non‐EHS group. In conclusion, the subjective symptoms did not result from the 60 Hz, 12.5 µT magnetic field exposures but from other non‐physiological factors. The goal of the research reported here is to narrow the range of uncertainty about peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) thresholds associated with whole body magnetic field exposures at 50/60 Hz. This involved combining PNS thresholds measured in human subjects exposed to pulsed magnetic gradient fields with calculations of electric fields induced in detailed anatomical models of the body by that same exposure system. PNS thresholds at power frequencies (50/60 Hz) can be predicted from these data due to the wide range of pulse durations (70 mus to 1 ms), the length of the pulse trains (several tens of ms), and the exposure of a large part of the body to the magnetic field. These data together with the calculations of the rheobase electric field exceeded in 1% (E(1%)) of two anatomical body models, lead to a median PNS detection threshold of 47.9 +/- 4.4 mT for a uniform 60 Hz magnetic field exposure coronal to the body. The threshold for the most sensitive 1% of the population is about 27.8 mT. These values are lower than PNS thresholds produced by magnetic fields with sagittal and vertical orientations or nonuniform exposures.  相似文献

Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance attributed to electromagnetic fields (IEI‐EMF; formerly ‘electromagetic hypersensitivity’) is a medically unexplained illness in which subjective symptoms are reported following exposure to electrical devices. In an earlier systematic review, we reported data from 31 blind provocation studies which had exposed IEI‐EMF volunteers to active or sham electromagnetic fields and assessed whether volunteers could detect these fields or whether they reported worse symptoms when exposed to them. In this article, we report an update to that review. An extensive literature search identified 15 new experiments. Including studies reported in our earlier review, 46 blind or double‐blind provocation studies in all, involving 1175 IEI‐EMF volunteers, have tested whether exposure to electromagnetic fields is responsible for triggering symptoms in IEI‐EMF. No robust evidence could be found to support this theory. However, the studies included in the review did support the role of the nocebo effect in triggering acute symptoms in IEI‐EMF sufferers. Despite the conviction of IEI‐EMF sufferers that their symptoms are triggered by exposure to electromagnetic fields, repeated experiments have been unable to replicate this phenomenon under controlled conditions. A narrow focus by clinicians or policy makers on bioelectromagnetic mechanisms is therefore, unlikely to help IEI‐EMF patients in the long‐term. During recent decades, there has been a marked decline of the house sparrow (Passer domesticus) population in the United Kingdom and in several western European countries. The aims of this study were to determine whether the population is also declining in Spain and to evaluate the hypothesis that electromagnetic radiation (microwaves) from phone antennae is correlated with the decline in the sparrow population. Between October 2002 and May 2006, point transect sampling was performed at 30 points during 40 visits to Valladolid, Spain. At each point, we carried out counts of sparrows and measured the mean electric field strength (radiofrequencies and microwaves: 1 MHz-3 GHz range). Significant declines (P = 0.0037) were observed in the mean bird density over time, and significantly low bird density was observed in areas with high electric field strength. The logarithmic regression of the mean bird density vs. field strength groups (considering field strength in 0.1 V/m increments) was R = -0.87 (P = 0.0001). The results of this article support the hypothesis that electromagnetic signals are associated with the observed decline in the sparrow population. We conclude that electromagnetic pollution may be responsible, either by itself or in combination with other factors, for the observed decline of the species in European cities during recent years. The appearently strong dependence between bird density and field strength according to this work could be used for a more controlled study to test the hypothesis.  相似文献

To investigate how extracellular electric field modulates neuron activity, a reduced two-compartment neuron model in the presence of electric field is introduced in this study. Depending on neuronal geometric and internal coupling parameters, the behaviors of the model have been studied extensively. The neuron model can exist in quiescent state or repetitive spiking state in response to electric field stimulus. Negative electric field mainly acts as inhibitory stimulus to the neuron, positive weak electric field could modulate spiking frequency and spike timing when the neuron is already active, and positive electric fields with sufficient intensity could directly trigger neuronal spiking in the absence of other stimulations. By bifurcation analysis, it is observed that there is saddle-node on invariant circle bifurcation, supercritical Hopf bifurcation and subcritical Hopf bifurcation appearing in the obtained two parameter bifurcation diagrams. The bifurcation structures and electric field thresholds for triggering neuron firing are determined by neuronal geometric and coupling parameters. The model predicts that the neurons with a nonsymmetric morphology between soma and dendrite, are more sensitive to electric field stimulus than those with the spherical structure. These findings suggest that neuronal geometric features play a crucial role in electric field effects on the polarization of neuronal compartments. Moreover, by determining the electric field threshold of our biophysical model, we could accurately distinguish between suprathreshold and subthreshold electric fields. Our study highlights the effects of extracellular electric field on neuronal activity from the biophysical modeling point of view. These insights into the dynamical mechanism of electric field may contribute to the investigation and development of electromagnetic therapies, and the model in our study could be further extended to a neuronal network in which the effects of electric fields on network activity may be investigated.  相似文献
