The pulmonate limpets Siphonaria japonica and Siphonana siriusoccur over a wide range of local habitat types in terms of exposureto wave action and salinity. This is a study of these two specieson three different shore types in Hong Kong, ranging from anextremely exposed, high salinity (32–35) shore at Caped'Aguilar to a sheltered, low salinity (16–33) shore atTai Lam Chung. Both species are restricted to the low shore, year round. S. japonica is a winter breeder and recruitmentoccurred between October and January. The recruitment of S.sirius could not be recognised from the size-frequency histograms. The algal standing crop at Tai Lam Chung was higher than atWu Kwai Sha during the winter period, i.e., between Octoberand April. Seasonal fluctuations in growth rate were recordedfor both Siphonaria species with the time of fastest growthoccurring in winter. S. japonica grew faster at Tai Lam Chungthan at Wu Kwai Sha. Food availability is thought to be an importantfactor affecting growth. (Received 17 September 1993; accepted 16 June 1994)  相似文献

Solen cylindraceus is an infaunal euryhaline osmoconformer witha wide salinity tolerance range, 13-45. Under conditions inwhich the animal is removed from its burrow, osmotic equilibrationis rapid (1-12 h). When the animal remains undisturbed in itsburrow, equilibration is retarded (72-204 h). It is suggestedthat the observed decrease in the rate of change of haemolymphosmolarity in animals in their burrows is linked to the behaviouralresponse of the animal and to the stability of the interstitialsalinity. Doubt is also cast upon the usefulness of in vitroexperimentation in osmotic studies of estuarine intertidal burrowinganimals. (Received 22 December 1987; accepted 15 February 1988)  相似文献

The reproductive cycle and fecundity of the date mussel Lithophagalithophaga, L. a well-known, ediblespecies has been examined.Sexes are separate and the mean number of eggs per each gonadis 1.894 x 106 ± 1.044 x 106 S.D. Reproduction firstoccurs at an age of 2+years and at a shell length greater than0.9 cm. Gonad activity is annual and is observed at all ages. The sex ratio for individuals up to 7 cm is 3:1 in favour ofthe males, whereas it becomes 1:1 for individuals greater than7 cm. The release of gametes by males and females occurs almostsimultaneously and begins immediately after a decline in thehighest water temperature ( 27°C), an increase in salinity(>31) and a decrease in the dissolved oxygen (6.5 ppm). Smallpercentages of mature individuals appear during the first wintermonths thus lengthening the reproductive period. This phenomenonis attributed to the temperature difference in deeper waters, the delay in gamete release by young individuals, tide, waveaction and changes in salinity. The fecundity of Lithophagalithophaga is high because its life-cycle is adversely affectedby environmental factors such as waves and tides. Fecundityincreases with shell length, more so with total wet weight andmainly with the age of the animals. Summer seems to be the suitableseason to exploit the date mussel of shell lengths > 5 cm. Aspects of the physiology and feeding behaviour of the scavengingsnails, Babylonia lutosa and Nassarius festivus have been studiedand compared. N. festivus has a wider physiological tolerancethan B. lutosa; upper lethal temperatures being 31.5°C and28.5°C respectively and lower lethal salinities 15.5 and11.5. N. festivus was also more resistant to desiccation. N.festivus is adapted to an intertidal environment that is morevariable than the subtidal habitat of B. lutosa. The metabolicrate of adult N. festivus was two to three times higher thanthat of adult B. lutosa, the specific oxygen consumption rateof the former being 7.91±0.49x10–6 mol of O2.g–1wet wt.hr–1. This correlates with estimates of consumptionobtained for the two animals, B. lutosa eating, on average,6.57% of its wet tissue weight per day, N. festivus 15.33%.Standardization of the data for 2 g animals of both species, however, reveals no significant difference in terms of oxygenconsumption and thus the enhanced consumption by N. festivussimply reflects its smaller size. Both species are opportunisticfeeders and can survive long periods of starvation (>100days). The feeding strategies of the two are also different,N. festivus eating faster than B. lutosa, possibly because ofthe more ephemeral nature of carrion in the intertidal. Starvationaffected the feeding behaviour of N. festivus more than B. lutosaand N. festivus was able to perceive carrion from greater relativedistances than B. lutosa. It is widely believed that deciduous tundra-shrub dominance is increasing in the pan-Arctic region, mainly due to rising temperature. We sampled dwarf birch (Betula nana L.) at a northeastern Siberian tundra site and used dendrochronological methods to explore the relationship between climatic variables and local shrub dominance. We found that establishment of shrub ramets was positively related to summer precipitation, which implies that the current high dominance of B. nana at our study site could be related to high summer precipitation in the period from 1960 to 1990. The results confirmed that early summer temperature is most influential to annual growth rates of B. nana. In addition, summer precipitation stimulated shrub growth in years with warm summers, suggesting that B. nana growth may be co-limited by summer moisture supply. The dual controlling role of temperature and summer precipitation on B. nana growth and establishment is important to predict future climate-driven vegetation dynamics in the Arctic tundra.  相似文献

Littoraria strigata, Nodilittorina millegrana and N. pyramidalisall spawned regularly in a rock-flanked Malaysian bay in March-June1985, whereas none had spawned there in July-October 1981. N.millegrana showed the least precise timing with some irregularpreponderance during the days between 2d before and 7d afternew or full moon and their associated spring tides. Spawningof N. pyramidalis was more strictly confined to spring tideswith 90% of eggs appearing between 2d before and 5d after newor full moon. There was no apparent difference between alternatespawnings on new and on full moons. L. strigata also spawnedregularly on the spring tides with 89% of eggs appearing between1 and 5 days after new and full moon. In this case, however, full moon spawnings (when spring tides rose highest) yieldedsome 7 times more eggs on average than the weaker spring tidesat new moons. In laboratory aquaria, the three species all released eggs duringboth night and daytime and through periods of both spring andneap tides with no evidence that periodicity persisted in constantconditions. The different degrees of 2-weekly spawning periodicity, togetherwith littorinids which spawn only monthly, may represent a rangeof adaptation to life at increasing shore heights. In a series of experiments, the planktonic larvae of Marenzelleriaviridis (Verrill, 1873) were exposed to various combinationsof salinity (S = 0.6, 2.5, 5.0, 10 and 20) and temperature (T= 5, 10 and 20C) from the 1-setiger stage to the onset of metamorphosis(16- to 17-setiger stage). One-setiger larvae were unable tocomplete their development to metamorphosis at salinities below5. Metamorphosis was successful at salinities of 10 and 20,when the animals adopted a benthic life mode. Larval developmentwas more rapid at 10 than at 20, and was positively affectedby higher temperatures. Larvae exposed to a salinity of 3.5at the 4- to 5-setiger stage developed and completed metamorphosisto benthic juveniles despite the low salinity. These larvaedeveloped most rapidly at a temperature of 10C. The salinitytolerances (LC50) of M. viridis larvae (t = 48 h), juvenilesand adults (t = 72 h in each case) were determined at 10C.The results showed that all development stages can toleratesalmities <1 The importance of constraints on developmentand tolerance to low salinities for the successful colonizationof oligohaline regions is shown and discussed in connectionwith other brackish-water organisms.  相似文献

Cirripede larvae can occur year-round in temperate and tropicalwaters, often in significant numbers, yet the species compositionof the ‘Balanus sp.’ component is rardy studied.Weekly plankton samples were analyzed qualitatively for larvalcirripede species and stage over a year (1977–1978) attwo Rhode Island stations. Six species of larvae were foundin Lower Narragansett Bay (30° salinity). Semibalanus balanoidesand Balanus balanus have a single winter brood. S. balanoidesis the predominant winter breeder with a minor release of naupliiin early December and major release in March followed by cypridsin mid-April.B. balanus populations release all larvae in Marchwith cyprids in mid-April. Balanus crenatus is mainly a winterbreeder, but has multiple broods; it does not breed in July-Septemberwhen the water temperature is above 18°C. Balanus venustusis the predominant summer breeder, and larvae were observedfrom May through December (water >8°C). Larvae of Chthamalusfragilis and Balanus eburneus occur in low numbers from May-October.At the Pettaquamscutt River site (12 salinity), Balanus improvisuslarvae predominate and early stage nauplii (I-II) occur in samplesyear round (0–27°C). Two peaks of later stage naupliiand cyprids occur in late spring (May) and early winter (Nov.-Jan.).Continued temperatures bdow 5°C or above 20°C appearto inhibit larval development. Comparison of results with existing literature reveals severalsignificant findings. The bimodal rdease of S. balanoides larvaeis unusual and may be in response to the phytoplankton dynamicsof the year; however, the existence of distinct races of S.balanoides may also be a factor. Larvae of B. venustus predominatein the lower bay during the summer, yet this species is unreportedin past studies. B. improvisus nauplii are more cold tolerantthan previously reported. Comparison of findings with reportedbreeding patterns in Florida indicate significant differencesin temperature responses between northern and southern populations. 1Contribution No. 188 from EPA Environmental Research Laboratory,South Ferry Rd., Narragansett, RI 02882  相似文献

Lymnaea peregra from lotic habitats (running waters) had largeraperture-length/shell-length ratios than contemporaries fromlentic sites (standing waters). This pattern was observed infield samples from two separate years (1985 and 1986). Laboratoryculture experiments suggested that shell shape could be geneticallydetermined in at least some populations. We hypothesize thatlotic snails possess bigger feet, and hence larger aperturesthan lentic individuals as an adaptation to withstand watercurrent *Present address Departments of Biology, King's College (KQC),University of London, Campden Hill Road, London W3 7AH, England (Received 14 September 1987;  相似文献

Freshwater mussels of the genus Diplodon (Unionida) are commoninhabitants of lakes and rivers in South America, and have slowgrowth and long life spans. We established the annual periodicityof incremental shell growth in Diplodon chilensis patagonicus(d'Orbigny, 1835) and calculated growth rates at different ages, using internal ring counting supported by dyeing methods and18O isotope analyses, in two Patagonian populations (Lago Steffenand its effluent Río Manso Inferior, Argentina). Longevitiesof ca. 90 years (Lago Steffen) significantly extend the lifespans reported in the past. Growth rates for old individuals(>30 years) from both lake and river populations average0.16 mm per year along the axis of minimal growth. We evaluatedthe seasonal periodicity of minor and trace elements (Mn, Mg,Sr, Ba, Na, S) in situ by Laser Ablation ICP-MS and ElectronProbe Microanalyser analyses. Line-scans in a valve from LagoSteffen show that Mn, Sr and Ba are preferentially accumulatedduring the summer, while higher concentrations of Mg are foundin the winter bands. Metal/Ca ratios may serve as long-termarchives of environmental variables, e.g. metal concentrationsin water, water temperature and primary productivity. Diplodonchilensis patagonicus valves exhibit excellent characteristicsto construct an accurate chronological archive with time windowsof up to around a century, resolving the environmental signalannually and even seasonally. Patelloida nigrosulcata on intertidal platforms in the Perthmetropolitan area live on the backs of shells of living abalone,Haliotis roei. Over 95% of abalone 30 mm have one or more limpets, and there is a close relationship between abalone and limpetdensity. Sexes are usually separate in P. nigrosulcata, butabout 4% of the population in hermaphroditic. Biomphalaria Pfeifferi is widespread in Africa, tolerates adiverse array of habitats, and is highly susceptible to schistosomeinfection. As such, it is the most important host of Schistosomamansoni in the Old World. Representatives of Biomphalaria pfeifferifrom twelve localities in southern Kenya were examined usingstarch gel electrophoresis in order to describe the populationstructure. Ten to fifteen loci were resolved in each population.Genotypic frequencies obtained for 10 loci have been used tocalculate Nei' genetic distances. Nine eastern populations wererelatively similar to each other (D 0.016), but divergent fromwestern populations (D 0.178). Two of three western populationswere quite similar (D = 0.001), the third being more divergent(D 0.258). Genotypic frequencies showed a substantial departurefrom Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, due to a marked deficiencyof heterozygotes. Calculation of F-statistics revealed evidenceof non-random mating as well as considerable differentiationamong localities. Biomphalaria pfeifferi differs from otherBiomphalaria species studied to date in exhibiting evidenceof non-random mating. Higher levels of inbreeding could alterthe pattern of response to selection imposed by parasites suchas Schistosoma mansoni. (Received 18 May 1989; accepted 30 October 1989)  相似文献

This paper examines the biology and ecology of Helix lucorumL. which lives in mainland Greece, as well as its growth andsecondary production. A demographic study revealed that (a)3 cohorts exist at any time during the year (when adults ofall generations belong to the same cohort) (b) egg-laying andhatching occur during the months of July and August respectively,(c) the most rapid growth takes place during spring. Study ofH. lucorum genitalia in relation to age showed that the snailsaxe sexually mature 3 years after hatching, when the largestdiameter of their shell (D) is equal to or greater than 35 mm Von Bertallanffy's method suggests that Helix lucorum may liveup to 14 years or more in order to reach its possible maximumsize (48.80 mm) The study of relative growth of D in relation to Ps (peristomesurface) of Helix lucorum shows that D grows faster than Pswhen D12.50 mm; juveniles change their growth rate when theirD arrives at 22.05 mm, and growth becomes slower when adultsarrive at 36.27 mm Annual secondary production calculated by the size frequencymethod gave a mean annual density of 3.39 individuals per m2,a mean annual crop (biomass) of 4.04 g-m–2 and an annualproduction (P) of 5.02 g · m–2. The annual turnoverratio (P//b) is equal to 1.24 (Received 23 June 1987;  相似文献

One specimen of the sand-burrowing nudibranch Armina tigrinaRafinesque was collected from South Carolina in June. The specimendeposited a single egg mass of approximately 6500 white eggswhich developed into lecithotrophic veligers in 8 days at 23°C.Of the veligers which metamorphosed, 9 lived 4–5.5 months(i.e. the life cycle was subannual). Eight individuals reachedsexual maturity in about 80 days. Copulation began at a bodylength of 24 mm and oviposition at 28 mm. During the 1.5 monthegg-laying period, each individual laid 2–4 wavy egg masseswith 2000–7000 eggs per mass. Death followed oviposition.Average growth rate of fed and starved pre-ovipositional nudibranchswas 3.4% and 0.9% per day respectively. Growth rate of ovipositingspecimens was 0.6% or less per day. Based on average feedingrates, each nudibranch consumed approximately 1.6 g damp weightof Renilla reniformis (one small colony) between metamorphosisand egg laying and 6.1 g damp weight (about two average colonies)from egg laying to death. Feeding efficiency is presumably increasedby interlocking and abutting radular teeth. Egg diameters reportedfor Armina tigrina from South Carolina and Florida were 199µm and 82 µm respectively. This difference suggeststhe existence of two species of Armina or ne species with twogeographically separated developmental types. Differences in shell morphology in the intertidal prosobranchmollusc Calliostoma zizyphinum were studied from a number ofsites within four geographical regions of the British Isleswith varying exposures to wave action and crab predation. Meanvalues of damage scarring were highest in shells sampled fromStrangford Lough, Northern Ireland, and lowest in individualsfrom the Atlantic Coast. Shells collected from the Isle of Manwere smaller than those from either the Atlantic coast of Irelandor Strangford Lough. Shells from Strangford Lough had tallershells (higher aspect ratio) than shells from the County Downand Atlantic Coast and shells from the County Down coast weremore squat (lower aspect ratio) than those from all other areas.Shells from Strangford Lough were significantly thinner thanshells from all other geographical areas. The relationshipsbetween shell damage scarring and shell size and tallness werenot consistent among areas. Shells from Strangford Lough arenotable in showing a steep, positive relationship between shellsize and scarring and a steep, negative relationship betweenscarring and tallness. The unusual shell phenotypes observedin shells from Strangford Lough may be explained by rapid shellgrowth, which would not only allow Calliostoma to attain a sizerefuge from crab predators but also to recover successfullyfrom repeated crab attacks on the shell lip. Such a strategywould result in larger, thinner shells with a high number ofdamage scars. (Received 6 June 2006; accepted 20 December 2006)  相似文献

Natural abundance values of plant 15N give an indication asto the source of nitrogen. In particular, carnivorous plantsare expected to be relatively enriched due to trophic enrichmentof their prey. Values of 15N for adultRoridula gorgonias(mean+3.02)are 4–9 greater than co-occurring non-carnivorous plantspecies and 5.24 greater than juvenileR. gorgoniasplants. Theyare also 3.5–4.26 greater than co-occurringDroseraspecieswhich, being sundews, are considered to be carnivorous. Thesehigh levels of 15N in adult plants are best explained as beingdue to access to trophically enriched N from insects. As isthe case for other carnivorous plants, leaves and stems ofR.gorgoniasare highly ultraviolet reflective and are thereforeprobably attractive to potential insect prey. This is furthersupport for this plant species being insectivorous.Copyright1998 Annals of Botany Company Nitrogen isotopes, carnivorous plants, insectivorous plant, ultraviolet,Roridula gorgoniasL.  相似文献

All three races of Neotricula aperta, an epilithic, schistosometransmitting, snail of the Mekong and Mul rivers of NortheastThailand and southern Laos, were found to take up acetate froma dilute solution. After 48 h incubation the mean specific netuptake rates (µmol–1 g–1 h–1), from750 µM acetate, were: 1.86, -race; 1.39, ß-raceand 3.25, y-race. Over 48 h the snails were able to achievereductions in the ambient acetate concentration of up to 60%.Incubations under bacteriostatis suggested that bacteria arenot involved in the uptake of acetate by N. aperta. The uptakecharacteristics conform to the Michaelis-Menten model. The transportconstants, Jmax (µmol–1 g–1 h–1) andKt (µM) were 1.10 and 102 respectively (-race). Racialdifferences in uptake characteristics are discussed in relationto micro-habitat differences. HPLC indicated concentrations of acetate in y-N. aperta microhabitatsof around 325 µM. This suggests a pool size sufficientto satisfy only 6% of the snail's basal metabolic rate (BMR).Levels within the epilithic aufwuchs, however, are probablyhigh enough to provide for more than 50% of the BMR. The possible role of acetate in the energy metabolism of N.aperta is discussed. Short-chain carboxylic acids (such as acetate),arising from the decomposition of the aufwuchs, could representsources of fermentable organics that may be taken up by N. apertasnails and used to supplement their nutrition during times offood shortage. However, further investigations involving 14C-labellingtechniques are required. The findings of this investigationhave implications for the chemical ecology and life-cycle ofN. aperta. The Hawaiian dorid nudibranch Hypselodoris infucata (Rppell& Leuckart, 1828) was reared to metamorphosis in the laboratory.Egg diameter averaged 88 µm and veligers hatched, afterabout 5 days at 25°C, with a coiled shell averaging 149µm in length. Larvae fed on phytoplankton grew to a maximumshell length of 306 µm in about 15 days. Larval growthwas affected by both quality and quantity of the algal diet. Some larvae were competent to metamorphose 16 days post-hatchingat 26°C, and competence could be retained for at least oneweek. Metamorphosis is complete within 24 hours of exposureto an inducer. At least three species of sponge, Halichondriacoerulea, Sig-modocia sp., and Tedania macrodactyla, in additionto the nudibranch's adult prey species, Dysidea sp., inducedmetamorphosis of competent larvae. Primary films grown on glassslides also induced metamorphosis in some larvae, as did 20µM excess potassium ions in seawater. These data suggestthat nonspecific induction of metamorphosis occurs in this specieseven though the adult nudibranchs are highly prey specific. This implies that in the field, H. infucata find Dysidea sp.after settlement and metamorphosis Present address: Dept of Genetics and Development, College ofPhysicians and Surgeons of Columbia Univeisity, 701 West 168thStreet, NewYork, 10032, USA (Received 22 June 1987; accepted 3 March 1988)  相似文献

Feeding and growth of the aeolid nudibranch Cuthona nana wasdocumented. Cuthona nana feeds specifically on the colonialhydroid Hydractinia echinata. Nudi-branchs were observed onhermit crab shells in Gos-port Harbor at the Isles of Shoals,Maine and on old bridge pilings near Gerrish Island, Maine. Grazing rates of nudibranchs (3–25 mm) were quantifiedover 24 hour periods in the laboratory. Larger nudibranchs consumedmore hydroid tissue feeding mostly on polyps, whereas smallerindividuals consumed less and fed on mat tissue. Grazing intensityin the field at Gosport Harbor was determined by estimatingthe area of grazed patches of hydroid colonies attached to hermitcrab shells. The average patch size was 5.75% of the total colonyarea. Growth rates for nudibranchs were determined in the laboratory.Growth rates were greatest prior to maturation and oviposition.Animals from Gerrish Island and Gosport Harbor decreased insize after oviposition due to senescence. Nudibranchs from GerrishIsland reached a maximum size of 12 mm, compared to 23 mm foranimals at Gosport Harbor. *Present address: Division of Science and Mathematics. Universityof Minnesota, Morris.
