ABSTRACT

The role of carnivorous mammals as seed dispersers of Myrtus communis L. in the Mediterranean environment was studied. Seeds of M. communis were found in faeces of red fox (Vulpes vulpes L.) and carnivores from the genus Martes, at four sites on the Tyrrhenic coast of Southern Italy in the period autumn-winter 1993–1995. All the study sites are covered by Mediterranean shrublands with M. communis as one of the dominant species. Content analysis of fox scats showed that fruits of M. communis constitute a relevant component of the diet of these carnivores, although other food categories were also well represented. Further investigations on the effect of mammal digestion on seed germinability showed that carnivores not only moved the seeds away from the mother plant but also enhanced their germinability. This species was known to be bird- and ant-dispersed and the adaptive implications of a multi-vectorial seed dispersal process is discussed.  相似文献

We studied carbon‐based secondary and structural compounds (CBSSCs) in Myrtus communis, Erica arborea, and Juniperus communis co‐occurring in a natural CO2 spring site and in a nearby control site in a Mediterranean environment. Leaf concentrations of phenolics and CBSSCs, such as lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNCs), and lipids were measured monthly (phenolics) and every two months (the other compounds) throughout a year. There was a slight seasonal trend towards maximum concentrations of most of these CBSSCs during autumn–winter and minimum values during the spring season, particularly in Myrtus communis. For most of the CBSSCs and species, there were no consistent or significant patterns in response to the elevated [CO2] (c. 700 μmol mol?1) of the spring site. These results were not due to a dilution effect by increased structural or nonstructural carbon. Therefore, in contrast to many experimental studies of CO2 enrichment, mainly conducted for short periods, there were no greater concentrations of phenolics, and, as in many of these studies, there were neither greater concentrations of the other CBSSCs. These results do not agree with the predictions of the carbon source‐sink hypotheses. Possible causes of this disagreement are discussed. These causes include the complex heterogeneous environmental conditions and the variability of resource availabilities in the field, photosynthetic down‐regulation, and/or the homeostatic and evolutionary nature of organisms. These results suggest evolutionary adaptive responses to changes in CO2. They also suggest caution in attributing increased CBSSC concentrations to elevated [CO2] at long‐term scale in natural conditions, and therefore in their implications for plant–herbivore interactions and for decomposition.  相似文献

This paper reports field observational evidence on the diversity-biomass production relationship from eastern Mediterranean shrublands dominated by Cistus salviifolius. The main results are: (1) plant diversity and ecosystem primary production are positively correlated in the Cistus shrublands, which are multigrowth form systems; (2) the taxonomic and growth form diversity in Cistus shrublands suggests that there is strong differentiation along the structural niche axis, and thus functional redundancy is weak; (3) the performance of the dominant Cistus in terms of biomass production did not affect the overall diversity-biomass production of the studied communities. Seasonal changes in tissue water relations of Erica arborea L., Myrtus communis L. and Juniperus communis L., grown in a Mediterranean environment, were analysed under field conditions over a 12 month period by comparing plants grown in the proximity of a natural CO2 spring (about 700 μ mol mol ? 1 atmospheric CO2 concentration, [CO2]) with plants in ambient conditions. Tissue water relations varied in response to changes in water availability, but the seasonal course of tissue water relations parameters was also related to ontogeny. Tissue water relations of these co‐occurring shrubs were not alike. Osmotic potentials and saturated mass/dry mass ratio were lowest during peak drought stress periods. Diurnal changes in osmotic potential at the point of turgor loss were least early in the season, maximal in mid‐season, and decreased again in autumn. Turgor potentials decreased as drought progressed and were highest in late fall and mid‐winter. Symplastic water fraction was highest in mid‐spring for E. arborea and M. communis and decreased during the summer, while the opposite was observed for J. communis. Common to all species, under elevated [CO2], was an increase of turgor pressure, particularly during the summer months. Other parameters showed species‐specific responses to long‐term elevated [CO2]. In particular, exposure to elevated [CO2] increased osmotic potentials in E. arborea under drought, while the opposite was the case for J. communis. Site differences in predawn to midday shifts were not strong in any of the species. Differences in tissue water relations suggest that the coexistence of these shrubs in the same environment with similar water availability are partially based on differential water relations strategies and water use patterns. Regardless of the mechanisms, growth of these shrubs in elevated [CO2] may be either less, similarly or more affected by drought stress than plants in ambient [CO2] depending on the species and season.  相似文献

Critical stages in the recruitment process of Rhamnus alaternus L   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Rhamnus alaternus is a Mediterranean shrub commonly used in reforestation programs. Although several aspects of its reproductive biology have been studied, little is known about the importance of the different recruitment stages in the overall regeneration process of this species, which limits its proper use in Mediterranean forests and shrubland management. The aim of the present work was to quantify the importance of the different recruitment stages in the regeneration process of R. alaternus. METHODS: Two populations of Rhamnus alaternus on the island of Mallorca that differ in climatic conditions, type of habitat and sex ratio were studied. The importance of seed production, seed dispersal and predation, seedling emergence and seedling survival for the regeneration of this species were quantified. KEY RESULTS: In both populations, fruit set and fruit removal by animals were not critical stages, since almost half of the flowers became mature fruits and 90% of those were dispersed. Most seeds were deposited under female conspecifics (86 and 47%, at Lloret and Esporles, respectively), and very few were found in open inter-spaces (1 and 5%). Post-dispersal seed predation (mostly by ants and rodents) was very high in both populations. Seedling emergence took place during autumn and early winter and it ranged from 31 to 68% depending upon year and microhabitat. The majority of emerged seedlings died during the first year, mainly due to desiccation; such mortality was influenced by rainfall and differed among microhabitats (varying from 67 to 100%). The general spatial distribution of seed rain was concordant with the seedling emergence and survival pattern in both populations. CONCLUSIONS: The recruitment of Rhamnus alaternus appeared to be mainly limited by seed and seedling survival, regardless of the type of habitat in which the species is found.  相似文献

Myrmecochory commonly complements the advantages of ballistic dispersal in diplochorous species. We studied the role of the elaiosome in two populations of the two diplochorous Mediterranean spurges Euphorbia boetica and E. nicaeensis, which share an efficient ballistic dispersal mechanism followed by secondary removal by ants. They differ in elaiosome persistence, as most E. boetica seeds lose the elaiosome during explosive dispersal. Self-assessed dietary preferences with seeds with and without elaiosomes of each species showed differences in behaviour among and within ant species. In general, the absence of elaiosome entailed a decrease in the number of disperser ant species interacting with the seeds, whereas the number of predatory ants remains invariable. However, in one population of E. nicaeensis, experimental elimination of the elaiosome did not affect seed removal by mutualistic ants. On the other hand, analysis of refuse piles of the granivorous Messor marocanus and M. bouvieri suggests that they act as seed predators in E. boetica, whereas unintentional dispersal can be important in E. nicaeensis. We suggest, therefore, that the presence of the elaiosome in the seeds of the studied spurges increases the interaction with disperser ant species, but the possible dispersal advantage is not apparent and is spatially variable.  相似文献

The removal rates of fruits (the diaspore) were assessed in exclusion experiments in three shrubby species of Darwinia, endemic to the Sydney Basin of south‐eastern Australia. There was a clear pattern of fruit removal in just a few days by small species of ants from the genera Iridomyrmex, Crematogaster and Pheidole. When only ants had access to fruits an average of 41% of fruits were removed, whereas when only vertebrates had access an average of 13% of fruits were removed. There was some variation in the number of fruits removed both between species and within species across study sites or annual seed crops. When ants had access to seeds this variation in removal amounted to 10–80% over 1–4 days. Uniquely in Darwinia, it is the old petals (which remain attached to the fruit) that are attractive to the ants, rather than a specific lipid body. This likely represents a case of successful ecological fitting by Darwinia to take advantage of the widespread presence of myrmecochory in the Australian flora.  相似文献

舞草(Codariocalyx motorius)由于其小叶具有自身"摆动"的功能,从而具有较高的观赏价值.在长期的演化过程中,舞草与蚂蚁形成了互惠共生的关系舞草种子生成了附生其上的能吸引蚂蚁的油质体,蚂蚁在搬运取食中,使舞草种子得以传播.舞草种子最重要的传播者是圆叶铺道蚁(Tetramorium cyclolobium Xu et Zheng)和布立毛蚁(Paratrechina bourbonica Forel).另外长足光结蚁(Anoplolepis gracilipes Smith)和两种大头蚁(Pheidole sp.1和sp.2)也搬运其种子.野外试验表明,圆叶铺道蚁日搬运活动与气温呈显著正相关,即y(搬运种子数)=-9.5038+0%5608X(气温)(r=0.7196**,n=33,P<0.01),中午搬运效率达到高峰.布立毛蚁日搬运活动在上、下午各有一个高峰,上午的高峰出现时间不稳定,下午的高峰出现在1 600~1800.舞草种子上附生的油质体是吸引蚂蚁并产生搬运行为的主要物质.化学分析表明,油质体富含蚂蚁生长发育所必需的10种氨基酸和多种无机元素.样地采用陷阱诱捕蚂蚁的调查显示,5种搬运者中,圆叶铺道蚁数量最大,分别占蚂蚁总量的8.26%和搬运蚂蚁总量的48%.这说明圆叶铺道蚁在舞草种子的搬运中起着主要作用.  相似文献

In Mediterranean ecosystems, competition between opportunistic grasses and slower-growing woody species may affect the speed and path of ecosystem recovery and the success of restoration plantings after natural or human-induced disturbance. In this experiment, competitive interactions between Mediterranean annual and perennial grass species (Avena fatua and Brachypodium retusum, respectively) and an important Mediterranean shrub (Rosmarinus offlcinalis) were examined under semi-controlled conditions simulating wet and dry Mediterranean rainfall regimes. The identity of the grass competitor and the level of water availability in the plots interacted to produce differing rates of R. offlcinalis growth but similar levels of mortality. In particular, competition with the perennial grass resulted in very low rates of R. offlcinalis growth at both irrigation levels. Measurements of soil water content showed that both grasses reduced soil moisture to low levels, though this effect was temporary in the case of the winter annual grass. Resistance to hydraulic flow in roots was highest in the perennial grass, smaller but of similar magnitude in the shrub, and much lower in the annual grass. Transpirational response to decreasing leaf water potential was a quick, sharp drop in conductance in R. offlcinalis, in contrast to a moderated decline from much lower initial transpiration rates in B. retusum. The annual grass largely maintained both leaf water potential and transpiration through leaf-tip senescence and death. Quantification of the rate of hydric recuperation of leaves after irrigation of drought-stressed plants showed that the perennial grass recovered at a rate four times that of R. offlcinalis, suggesting a strategy for making quick use of rare summer rains that may contribute to its competitive success. The appropriateness of planting or suppressing grasses in restoration of disturbed sites in Mediterranean Spain is discussed.  相似文献

Abstract Measuring the fate of seeds between seed production and seedling establishment is critical in understanding mechanisms of recruitment limitation of plants. We examined seed fates to better understand the recruitment dynamics of four resprouting shrubs from two families (Fabaceae and Epacridaceae) in temperate grassy woodlands. We tested whether: (i) pre‐dispersal seed predation affected seed rain; (ii) post‐dispersal seed predation limited seed bank accumulation; (iii) the size of the seed bank was related to seed size; and (iv) viable seeds accumulated in the soil after seed rain. There was a distinct difference in seed production per plant between plant families with the legumes producing significantly more seeds per individual than the epacrids. Seed viability ranged from 43% to 81% and all viable had seed or fruit coat dormancy broken by heat or scarification. Pre‐dispersal predation by Lepidopteran larvae removed a large proportion of seed from the legume seed rain but not the epacrids. Four species of ants (Notoncus ectatomoides, Pheidole sp., Rhytidoponera tasmaniensis and Iridomyrmex purpureus) were major post‐dispersal seed removers. Overall, a greater percentage of Hardenbergia (38%) and Pultenaea (59%) seeds were removed than the fleshy fruits of Lissanthe (14%) or Melichrus (0%). Seed bank sizes were small (<15 seeds m?2) relative to the seed rain and no significant accumulation of seed in the soil was detected. Lack of accumulation was attributed to seed predation as seed decay was considered unlikely and no seed germination was observed in our study sites. Our study suggests that seed predation is a key factor contributing to seed‐limited recruitment in grassy woodland shrubs by reducing the number of seeds stored in the soil.  相似文献

Microsites where seeds arrive during the dispersal process determine plant reproductive success, affecting the quality of dispersal. Despite their crucial role for plant recruitment, very few studies have addressed spatio–temporal variations in microsites of seed arrival in complex seed‐disperser networks. Using an endozoochorous dispersal system, we characterized the microsites of seed arrival of eight fleshy‐fruited plant species dispersed by five mammal species during two consecutive seasons across three sites in a Mediterranean environment (n = 383 feces with seeds; 261 453 seeds). We evaluated spatial and temporal variations in the probability of a seed to arrive at open microsites or at microsites with varying plant cover, considering selection by frugivores and assessing the extent to which seeds of particular species arrived under conspecifics or heterospecifics. We found strong spatio–temporal variations in the amounts of seeds of the eight target species arriving at different microsites. These variations were strongly driven by frugivores’ selection of different landscape elements (i.e. open areas and microsites dominated by different plant species), which differed from expectations based on their local availability. In general, more seeds than expected arrived at vacant (open) microsites. Using bipartite network graphs to connect seeds with their arrival microsites, we found that the proportion of seeds of fleshy‐fruited species arriving near conspecifics or heterospecifics, or at vacant microsites, varied depending on the target plant species, but also on the frugivore species dispersing it, on the study site and on the dispersal season. Our study revealed marked spatio–temporal variations in the microsites of seed arrival, which will potentially have implications for the quality of dispersal effectiveness, ultimately affecting plant population dynamics and community structure. Such a strong context‐dependence in the microsites of seed arrival is likely to confer resilience against unpredictable environmental conditions, like those typical of Mediterranean ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract Successful ecosystem restoration requires the re-establishment of fundamental ecological processes, many of which involve plant-animal interactions. Myrmecochory (seed dispersal by ants) is a particularly important plant-animal mutualism in Australia, but little is known about its response to either disturbance or restoration following disturbance. Here we investigate the effects of disturbance on seed dispersal by ants, and the extent to which the ant-seed relationship has re-established at sites undergoing rehabilitation, at Ranger uranium mine in the seasonal tropics of Australia's Northern Territory. We focused on the composition of seed-dispersing ant assemblages, rates of seed removal by ants, and the dispersal curves generated by ants, as determined by observations of removal from seed depots. Ten sites were studied, comprising four ‘natural’ (undisturbed) sites representing a range of savanna habitats occurring in the region, four disturbed sites representing a range of habitat disturbance but with intact soil, and two waste rock sites subject to preliminary revegetation trials. A total of 22 ant species from 10 genera were observed during 154 observations of seed removal, most commonly Rhytidoponera aurata (53 records), Monomorium (rothsteini gp) sp. 1 (14), Iridomyrmex sanguineus (13), Iridomyrmex pallidus (12) and Pleidole sp. 3 (10). Removal rates (over 3 h) averaged 29% across all sites and time periods, varying markedly both between and within sites. However, mean rates of removal were similar between natural, disturbed and waste rock sites (29%, 28% and 31%, respectively). A high incidence (62% of all depots) of'aril robbing’ by ants (primarily Monomorium spp.) eating arils in situ, without removal, was observed. Dispersal distances varied markedly between ant species, with Iridomyrmex sanguineus having both the highest mean (7.25m) and maximum (13.08 m) dispersal distances. Species of Pheidole typically dispersed seeds less than 0.5 m, and Meranoplus, Monomorium and Tetramorium spp. only ever moved seeds a few centimetres, usually dropping and abandoning them before reaching the nests. The dispersal curves characteristic of each site varied markedly due to the different composition of seed-dispersing ants. The mean dispersal distance at disturbed sites (3.91 m) was significantly higher than at natural sites (2.19 m), and the curves were strongly skewed in the former, but relatively uniform in the latter. The implications of these differences for recovery following disturbance are unclear. At rehabilitated waste rock sites, all observed removals involved distances less than 0.5 m, with a mean of 17 cm. This lack of effective ant-seed relationships might represent a barrier to further vegetation development at rehabilitated sites.  相似文献

Abstract Endozoochory has proven to be a highly effective mechanism in the dispersal of viable seeds in Mediterranean grasslands. We studied the effect of cattle dung application on species richness, particularly on the reintroduction of species lost after abandonment. Sown and control plots were monitored for 3 years after dung sowing. We found a significant increase in small‐scale richness, which may be attributed to the treatment, with the inclusion of species detected in the dung and in the grazed pasture. The differences in richness and floristic composition diminished over time. This experiment proves the potential utility of this treatment for the restoration of species richness in abandoned pastures, although supplementary steps are necessary, including further sowing and/or shrub cutting in subsequent years.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The organisation of an ant assemblage inhabiting an olive orchard in central Italy was analysed and patterns of dominance among ant species were described in order to assess (i) the relationship between thermal dependency and degree of behavioural dominance, and (ii) the relationship between dominance and discovery ability.
2. Activity patterns of the most abundant species on trees were examined in a sample of 120 trees during spring and summer. The degree of behavioural dominance and the ability of different species to discover new food sources were assessed using tuna baiting on a subset of 80 trees.
3. Different ant species showed contrasting patterns of activity. Some species (such as Lasius lasioides , Camponotus lateralis , and Camponotus piceus ) were most active during the warmer part of the day, while others restricted their activity to the cooler hours ( Camponotus aethiops and Plagiolepis pygmaea ). Some species (such as Crematogaster scutellaris ) were active irrespective of the time of day.
4. No clear relationship was observed between temperature of maximal activity and degree of behavioural dominance. There was, however, a positive relationship between behavioural dominance and thermal range of activity. A positive relationship between dominance and ability to find resources, with the most behaviourally dominant and aggressive species being most efficient in finding food items, was also observed.
5. The results support the idea that the temperature–dominance relationship is much more complex in Mediterranean-type habitats than in other ecosystems. Of particular interest is the positive dominance–discovery relationship. This finding contrasts with previous investigations, which reported a negative relationship between dominance and discovery ability and suggested that this pattern plays a role in promoting the coexistence of species in ant communities.  相似文献

Myrtus communis L. (myrtle), a typical Mediterranean plant species belonging to the family Myrtaceae, was shown to form arbuscular mycorrhizal symbioses in nature. Many different spore types were isolated from its rhizosphere and grown in pot cultures; six of them were identified as Glomus species. In the laboratory, the myrtle root system was colonized by indigenous endophytes as well as by an Italian isolate of Glomus intraradices. In greenhouse experiments, mycorrhizal inoculation reduced transplant stress in 60-day-old myrtle seedlings; their growth was renewed immediately after transplanting, whereas non-mycorrhizal plants stopped development. Significantly larger growth responses were obtained using indigenous fungi than the Italian isolate of Glomus intraradices. Accepted: 16 January 1997  相似文献

Mutualisms are one of the main forces shaping species spatial patterns at all geographic scales. In generalised mutualisms, however, the dependence among partners is highly variable in time and space, and therefore, the effect of diffuse mutualisms on species geographic distributions is unclear. Myrmecochorous seeds in Brazilian semi‐arid vegetation are dispersed by several ant species. However, large‐seeded species are especially dependent on dispersal by the giant ant Dinoponera quadriceps, which is the main disperser of such diaspores and the species that provide the longest dispersal distance among ant species in this system. Hence, we hypothesise that the presence of D. quadriceps shapes the distribution of large‐seeded, but not the distribution of small‐seeded myrmecochorous plant species. To evaluate this hypothesis, we modelled the potential distribution of two large‐seeded (which are predominantly dispersed by D. quadriceps) and two small‐seeded (which are barely dispersed by D. quadriceps) Euphorbiaceae species and the potential distribution of D. quadriceps. We analysed the relationship between the occurrence suitability of D. quadriceps and the occurrence suitability of plant species. We found that the potential distribution of both large‐seeded and small‐seeded myrmecochorous plants was unrelated to D. quadriceps occurrence suitability. It means that the disproportional benefits provided by high‐quality disperser at local scales may not emerge at broader geographical scales. In Caatinga vegetation, diaspores are submitted to strong abiotic filters that constraint seed germination and establishment after the dispersal phase. Such abiotic filters may dilute the initial benefit provided by long‐distance dispersers. Therefore, we suggest that in dry environments like the Caatinga, the benefits of long‐distance removals should be outweighed by the risk of reach new habitats with unfavourable conditions for germination and establishment.  相似文献

Osyris alba L. is a widespread dioecious hemiparasitic shrub of S Europe, N Africa, and SW Asia. Male inflorescences are multiflowered whereas each female inflorescence is reduced to a single flower with persistent enlarged bracts. Pollination is a prerequisite for fruit and seed development and wind is unlikely to be an effective means of pollen spread. In southern Italy pollen is transported by small unspecialized flies and beetles. Both male and female flowers produce an indistinguishable sweet odour. Male flowers are produced in large numbers and over a larger period than the females and provide pollen, nectar, and staminal hairs as rewards for pollinators. The presence and function of staminal hairs with tip cells inOsyris alba has been reported for the first time. Female flowers are rewardless, producing neither mature pollen, nectar nor staminal hairs, but possess three modified yellow indehiscent anthers containing no viable pollen which may provide a strong visual feeding stimulus for pollinators. It is suggested that pollinators are attracted by deceit to female flowers by mimicry of the males and the floral mimicry is, therefore, intraspecific and intersexual. The floral characteristics and flowering phenology of male and female plants are consistent with this kind of mimicry. The female flower possesses a tricarpellary ovary with three ovules of which only one develops. The single seed, containing a small embryo and a large, rich endosperm, is borne in a red fleshy bird-dispersed fruit. The reduction in seed number per flower to one highly nutrient-invested seed, together with a reduction of the multiflowered inflorescence to a solitary flower and the sequential production of ripe fruits over an extended fruiting season, suggest that the female function is markedly resource-limited. It is suggested that, although all the reproductive characteristics present inOsyris alba, as well as hemiparasitism, had probably evolved before the end of the tropical Tertiary, they are of adaptive advantage in the nutrient and water-limited environment of the Mediterranean maquis.  相似文献

When ants are dispersing seeds (myrmecochory), cessation of foraging can be as important as recruitment in determining dispersal success. We studied food collection by Aphaenogaster rudis from experimental depots by monitoring temporal variation and preference in food removal (diaspores of Asarum canadense and Sanguinaria canadensis and larvae of Tenebrio obscurus). Removal of diaspores, but not insect larvae, declined to nearly zero over the scale of hours. Satiation extended over the scale of days for diaspores. Extensive collection of larvae inhibited future collection of diaspores, but the converse was not observed. Increasing distance from the nest reduced removal of diaspores, but not of food bodies isolated from diaspores. Removal rates for diaspores were uncorrelated with the number of workers or brood in a colony.  相似文献

Three specimens of the Indo-Pacific Bluespotted cornetfish Fistularia commersonii are recorded for the first time from the Mediterranean. The presence of this species in the Mediterranean is due to migration from the Red Sea via the Suez Canal.  相似文献
