The acceleration of ions of different species from a plasma slab under the action of a charge-separation electric field driven by hot and cold electrons is studied by using a hybrid Boltzmann-Vlasov-Poisson model. The obtained spatial and energy distributions of light and heavy ions in different charge states demonstrate that the model can be efficiently used to study the ion composition in a multispecies expanding laser plasma. The regular features of the acceleration of ions of different species are investigated. The formation of compression and rarefaction waves in the halo of light ion impurity, as well as their effect on the energy spectrum of the accelerated ions, is analyzed. An approach is proposed that makes it possible to describe the production of fast ions by laser pulses of a given shape. It is shown that the energy of fast ions can be increased markedly by appropriately shaping the pulse. The effect of heating of the bulk of the cold target electrons on the ion acceleration is discussed.  相似文献

Leukemic cell intracellular responses to nanosecond electric fields   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
Intense, nanosecond (ns) pulsed electric fields (PEFs) are known to affect the intracellular structures of cells. The probability of preferentially inducing subcellular effects increases with decreasing pulse length while effects on the plasma membrane are diminished. This has been demonstrated by applying electrical pulses of 60 and 10 ns duration with electric field intensities of up to 6.5 MV/m to HL-60 cells. Using confocal microscopy, PEF-induced changes in the integrity of the plasma membrane and nucleus were measured by recording fluorescence changes with propidium iodide (PI) and acridine orange (AO), respectively. Results suggest that high voltage, nsPEFs target the nucleus and modify cellular functions while plasma membrane effects are delayed and become smaller as pulse duration is shortened. Cell viability was not affected by these pulses. In spite of the high pulsed electric fields, thermal effects can be neglected because of the ultrashort pulse duration. The results suggest application of this ultrashort pulse technology to modulate nuclear structure and function for potential therapeutic benefit.  相似文献

The interaction of a plasma in the accelerating gap of an open discharge with a strong external electric field and with the cathode surface has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. In a pulsed nanosecond discharge, the ion inertia and plasma screening of the electric field cause a fast growth of the electric field E in the cathode region and a decrease in the length of the latter. Along with a reduction of the electron multiplication factor at high electric fields, this leads to a substantial decrease in the ion flux toward the cathode, which allows one to develop highly efficient open-discharge light sources with a long lifetime and low cathode sputtering. In this respect, continuous and quasi-continuous discharges are less advantageous because of the smaller increase in the electric field in the cathode region. The Townsend coefficients of charge multiplication and electron emission at high electric fields typical of open discharges have been measured for the first time. Fast ions and atoms extracted from the plasma of the accelerating gap significantly affect the cathode emission properties. In particular, photoemission is enhanced by more than one order of magnitude and becomes the main mechanism for electron generation. This also increases the efficiency and lifetime of open-discharge light sources.  相似文献

A comparison between laser ablation of nickel in vacuum by using 532-and 1064-nm Nd:YAG (Yttrium Aluminium Garnet) laser wavelengths, with an intensity of 5 × 109 W/cm2, is reported. Nanosecond pulsed ablation produces high nonisotropic emission of neutrals and ionic species. For 532-nm laser irradiation, mass quadrupole spectrometry, coupled to electrostatic ion deflection and time-of-flight measurements, allows estimation of the energy distributions of the emitted species from plasma. For 1064-nm laser ablation, a cylindrical electrostatic ion analyzer permits one to measure the yield and the charge state of the emitted ions and reconstruct the ion energy and charge state distributions. Neutrals show typical Boltzmann-like distributions, while ions show Coulomb-Boltzmann-shifted distributions depending on their charge state. Surface profiles of the ablated craters permitted study of the ablation threshold and yields of nickel in vacuum versus the laser fluence. The plasma temperature was evaluated using experimental data. Special regard is given to the ion acceleration process occurring inside the plasma due to the high electrical field generated at nonequilibrium plasma conditions and the angular distribution of the emitted species. Hot plasmas can be generated by fast and intense laser pulses ablating solids placed in vacuum. A Nd:Yag laser operating at the fundamental and second harmonics with 9-ns pulses (maximum energy of 900 mJ) focused on metallic surfaces produces high ablation yields of the order of μg/pulse and dense plasma that expands adiabatically at supersonic velocity along the normal to the target surface. The plasma emits neutral and charged particles. Charge states up to 10+ have been measured in heavy elements ablated with intensities of the order of 1010 W/cm2. The ion temperature of the plasma is evaluated from the ion energy distributions measured with an ion energy analyzer. The electron temperature is measured through Faraday cups placed at the end of long drift tubes by using time-of-flight technique. The neutral temperature is measured with a special mass quadrupole spectrometer placed along the normal to the target surface. The plasma temperature increases with the laser pulse intensity. The ion temperature reaches values of the order of 400 eV, the electron temperature is of the order of 1 keV for hot electrons and 0.1 eV for thermal electrons, and the neutral temperature is of the order of 200 eV. The experimental apparatus, the diagnostic techniques, and the procedures for the plasma temperature characterization will be presented and discussed in detail. The possibility of using a Hall-current accelerator to extract ions from a partially ionized plasma produced by selective laser isotope photoionization of atomic vapor is examined. A mechanism for ion acceleration is investigated using one-dimensional time-dependent equations of two-fluid magnetohydrodynamics. The current cutoff due to the ion space charge is prevented by electron emission. It is shown that, at an accelerating voltage of 25–50 V and emission current density of several mA/cm2, the ion component is accelerated throughout the entire plasma volume up to a velocity of ~105 cm/s in a few microseconds. The influence of resonant charge exchange and secondary ionization by electrons on both the acceleration dynamics and selectivity degradation is taken into account. It is shown that the Hall-current extractor allows one to avoid selectivity degradation even when the plasma size exceeds the charge-exchange mean free path by one order of magnitude.  相似文献

In this paper, we have simulated the efficacy of gold/gold sulfide (GGS) nanoshells in NIR laser hyperthermia to achieve effective targeting for tumor photothermal therapy. The problem statement takes into account the heat transfer with the blood perfusion through capillaries, and pulsed laser irradiation during the hyperthermia. Although previous researchers have used short laser pulses (nanosecond and less), in order to prevent heat leakage to the neighbor tissues, we have examined the effect of millisecond pulses, as the extent of the target volume to which hyperthermia is induced is usually larger and also the lasers with this specification are more available. A tumor with surrounding tissue was simulated in COMSOL software (a finite element analysis, solver and simulation software) and also in a phantom made of agarose and intralipid. The tumor was irradiated by 10, 20 and 30 laser pulses with durations of 15, 50 and 200 ms and fluences of 20, 40 and 60 J/cm2. Experimental tests performed on a phantom prove the ability of the applied numerical model to capture the temperature distribution in the target tissue. We have shown that our simulation permits prediction of treatment outcome from computation of thermal distribution within the tumor during laser hyperthermia using GGS nanoshells and millisecond pulsed laser irradiation. The advantage of this simulation is its simplicity as well as its accuracy. Although, to develop the model completely for a given organ and application, all the parameters should be estimated based on a real vasculature of the organ, physiological conditions, and expected variation in those physiological conditions for that application in the organ.  相似文献

Dusty plasma in the region of the lunar terminator is considered. It is shown that, in this region, a structure resembling a plasma sheath forms near the lunar surface. This sheath creates a potential barrier, due to which electrons over the illuminated part of the Moon are confined by electrostatic forces. The width of the sheath-like structure is on the order of the ion Debye length. In this structure, significant (about several hundred V/m) electric fields arise, which lift charged micron-size dust grains to heights of several tens of centimeters. The suggested effect may be used to explain the glow observed by the Surveyor spacecraft over the lunar terminator.  相似文献

The effect of the Debye layer on the absorption of an electromagnetic surface wave propagating along the plasma-dielectric interface is considered. The electric field distribution in the Debye layer and the energy absorbed by the plasma electrons in this layer are determined. It is shown that the ratio of the rate at which surface waves are damped due to Cherenkov absorption by the electrons reflected from the electric field potential in the transition layer to their frequency is on the order of the ratio of the electron thermal velocity to the wave phase velocity.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of argon fluoride (ArF) excimer laser radiation on clinically important strains of gram-negative bacteria. The antibacterial activity of ArF excimer laser radiation was evaluated on two Acinetobacter baumannii, one Enterobacter cloacae, three Escherichia coli, two Helicobacter pylori, one Klebsiella pneumoniae and two Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains. The strains were isolated from clinical specimens and typed by the usual biochemical procedures. Square agar plates of 12 x 12 cm were divided into rectangular (2 x 3 cm) regions and spread with 0.5x 10(4) colony forming units (CFU)/ml of bacterial suspension. The excess liquid was removed and the plates were allowed to dry for 30 min. A total of 96 rectangular (2x3 cm) regions were used for each strain, in order to test an equal number of laser parameters. Each rectangular region was irradiated with different laser parameters, using a 193 nm ArF excimer laser, linked with a simple Galilean afocal system and a rectangular diaphragm of the same dimensions as the original laser beam cross-section, at a distance of 10 cm from the irradiated surface. This system was used in order to keep the laser pulse energy under 80 mJ and to cut-out the non-transverse electromagnetic mode branches of the laser beam. We then studied the bacterial survival ratio versus the number of laser pulses, the repetition frequency and the total laser beam fluence. Our results showed that the total laser beam fluence was the most important parameter to consider in evaluating the bactericidal effect of ArF excimer laser radiation. A critical value of the total fluence was determined for each strain, such that, for laser beam fluences greater than this critical value, no colonies appeared to survive while, for laser fluences less than this critical value, the survival ratio did not exceed 2 x 10(7) CFU (2 x 10(-5)%). These critical values were found to vary between 8 J/cm2 and 16 J/cm2 for the bacterial species studied. Under these conditions, ArF laser irradiation is promising for the sterilisation of hard surfaces and for in situ application.  相似文献

Employing the Nonghua 5 peanut as experimental material, the effects of low energy C+ ion implantation on caulis height, root length, dry weight, photosynthetic characteristics and leaf water use efficiency (WUE) of Peanut Ml Generation were studied. Four fluences were observed in the experiment. The results showed that ion implantation harmed the peanut seeds because caulis height, root length and dry weight all were lower in the treatments than in CK, and the harm was aggravated with the increase of ion fluence. Both Pn and Tr show a saddle-shape curve due to midday depression of photosynthesis. Low fluence of low energy C+ ion implantation could increase the diurnal average Pn of peanut. The diurnal variation of Tr did not change as significantly as Pn. The light saturation point (LSP) was restrained by the ions. After low energy C+ ion implantation, WUE was enhanced. When the fluence increased to a certain level, the WUE began to decrease.  相似文献

The question is discussed about the existence of an upper bound in the Bohm sheath criterion, according to which the Debye sheath at the interface between plasma and a negatively charged electrode is stable only if the ion flow velocity in plasma exceeds the ion sound velocity. It is stated that, with an exception of some artificial ionization models, the Bohm sheath criterion is satisfied as an equality at the lower bound and the ion flow velocity is equal to the speed of sound. In the one-dimensional theory, a supersonic flow appears in an unrealistic model of a localized ion source the size of which is less than the Debye length; however, supersonic flows seem to be possible in the two- and three-dimensional cases. In the available numerical codes used to simulate charged particle sources with a plasma emitter, the presence of the upper bound in the Bohm sheath criterion is not supposed; however, the correspondence with experimental data is usually achieved if the ion flow velocity in plasma is close to the ion sound velocity.  相似文献

The parameters of a multispecies metal ion beam extracted with the help of a set of grids from a plasma jet of a pulsed vacuum arc are studied experimentally. It is shown that the beam contains ions with energies that are both significantly lower and higher than the expected energy E Z = \(\bar Z\) eU acc, where \(\bar Z\) is the average ion charge number and U acc is the extracting voltage. As a result, the mean ion energy is lower than E Z and the ion energy spectrum is substantially wider than that in the plasma jet. It is found that this effect weakens with decreasing discharge current amplitude and that the shape of the spectrum depends on the accelerating voltage. Probe measurements show that, at accelerating voltages higher than 1 kV, a positive space charge forms in the drift gap, due to which the electric potential in the drift gap increases to a few hundred electronvolts. Analysis of experimental data indicates that the observed features of the ion spectrum can be attributed to the effect of the unsteady electric field of the space charge of the ion beam transported through the drift gap.  相似文献

The Poisson-Boltzmann equation is modified to consider charge ionogenicity, steric exclusion, and charge distribution in order to describe the perimembranous electrostatic potential profile in a manner consistent with the known morphology and biochemical composition of the cell's glycocalyx. Exact numerical and approximate analytical solutions are given for various charge distributions and for an extended form of the Donnan potential model. The interrelated effects of ionic conditions, bulk pH, ion binding, local dielectric, steric volume exclusion, and charge distribution on the local potential, pH, and charge density within the glycocalyx are examined. Local charge-induced, potential-mediated pH reductions cause glycocalyx charge neutralization. Under certain conditions, local potentials may be insensitive to ionic strength or may decrease in spite of increasing charge density. The volume exclusion of the glycocalyx reduces the local ion concentration, thereby increasing the local potential. With neutral lipid membranes, the Donnan and surface potential agree if the glycocalyx charge distribution is both uniform and several times thicker than the Debye length (approximately 20 A in thickness under physiological conditions). Model limitations in terms of application to microdomains or protein endo- and ectodomains are discussed.  相似文献

This paper reviews the many recent advances at the Center for Ultrafast Optical Science (CUOS) at the University of Michigan in multi-MeV ion beam generation from the interaction of short laser pulses focused onto thin foil targets at intensities ranging from 1017 to 1019 W/cm2. Ion beam characteristics were studied by changing the laser intensity, laser wavelength, target material, and by depositing a well-absorbed coating. We manipulated the proton beam divergence using shaped targets and observed nuclear transformation induced by high-energy protons and deuterons. Qualitative theoretical approaches and fully relativistic two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations modeled energetic ion generation. Comparison with experiments sheds light on ion energy spectra for multi-species plasma, the dependences of ion-energy on preplasma scale length and solid density plasma thickness, and laser-triggered isotope yield. Theoretical predictions are also made with the aim of studying ion generation for high-power lasers with the energies expected in the near future, and for the relativistic intensity table-top laser, a prototype of which is already in operation at CUOS in the limits of several-cycle pulse duration and a single-wavelength spot size.  相似文献

Ions enter cells through pores in proteins that are holes in dielectrics. The energy of interaction between ion and charge induced on the dielectric is many kT, and so the dielectric properties of channel and pore are important. We describe ionic movement by (three-dimensional) Nemst-Planck equations (including flux and net charge). Potential is described by Poisson's equation in the pore and Laplace's equation in the channel wall, allowing induced but not permanent charge. Asymptotic expansions are constructed exploiting the long narrow shape of the pore and the relatively high dielectric constant of the pore's contents. The resulting one-dimensional equations can be integrated numerically; they can be analyzed when channels are short or long (compared with the Debye length). Traditional constant field equations are derived if the induced charge is small, e.g., if the channel is short or if the total concentration gradient is zero. A constant gradient of concentration is derived if the channel is long. Plots directly comparable to experiments are given of current vs voltage, reversal potential vs. concentration, and slope conductance vs. concentration. This dielectric theory can easily be tested: its parameters can be determined by traditional constant field measurements. The dielectric theory then predicts current-voltage relations quite different from constant field, usually more linear, when gradients of total concentration are imposed. Numerical analysis shows that the interaction of ion and channel can be described by a mean potential if, but only if, the induced charge is negligible, that is to say, the electric field is spatially constant.  相似文献

The goal of this study is to distinguish the supramembrane potential difference-induced electroconformational changes from the huge transmembrane current-induced thermal damages in the delayed rectifier K+ channels. A double Vaseline-gap voltage clamp was used to deliver shock pulses and to monitor the channel currents. Three pairs of 4-ms shock pulses were used to mimic the electric shock by a power-line frequency electric field. Each pair consists of two pulses with the same magnitude, starting from 350 to 500 mV, but with opposite polarities. The shock pulse-generated transmembrane ion flux and the responding electric energy, the Joule heating, consumed in the cell membrane, as well as the effects on the K+ channel currents, were obtained. Results showed that huge transmembrane currents are not necessary to cause damages in the K+ channel proteins. In contrast, reductions in the K+ channel currents are directly related to the field-induced supramembrane potential differences. By a comparison with the shock field-induced Joule heating effects on cell membranes, the field-induced supramembrane potential difference plays a dominant role in damaging the K+ channels, resulting in electroconformational changes in the membrane proteins. In contrast, the shock field-induced huge transmembrane currents, therefore the thermal effects, play a secondary, trivial role.  相似文献

The polarization bremsstrahlung from thermal electrons scattered by the Debye sphere of an ion in a plasma is studied in the quasiclassical approximation. The model of the local plasma frequency is used to check the validity of the asymptotic expression for the polarizability of the electron cloud of an ion in the high-frequency range. This asymptotic expression is then used to derive a formula for the intensity of the total effective polarization bremsstrahlung. The R factor (the ratio of the contribution from the polarization bremsstrahlung to the contribution from conventional static bremsstrahlung) is obtained as a function of the plasma coupling parameter and electron density in order to analyze the role of the polarization bremsstrahlung in the total bremsstrahlung of the thermal plasma electrons. The spectral intensity of the effective polarization bremsstrahlung is calculated in the rotational approximation, which was previously employed in the theory of conventional static bremsstrahlung. It is shown that the spectral intensity of the polarization bremsstrahlung from thermal electrons scattered by the Debye sphere around an ion, as compared with the polarization bremsstrahlung by fast superthermal electrons, decreases more gradually with increasing frequency.  相似文献

An LBO (Li2B4O7) walled ionization chamber was designed to monitor the epithermal neutron fluence in boron neutron capture therapy clinical irradiation. The thermal and epithermal neutron sensitivities of the device were evaluated using accelerator neutrons from the 9Be(d, n) reaction at a deuteron energy of 4 MeV (4 MeV d-Be neutrons). The response of the chamber in terms of the electric charge induced in the LBO chamber was compared with the thermal and epithermal neutron fluences measured using the gold-foil activation method. The thermal and epithermal neutron sensitivities obtained were expressed in units of pC cm2, i.e., from the chamber response divided by neutron fluence (cm?2). The measured LBO chamber sensitivities were 2.23 × 10?7 ± 0.34 × 10?7 (pC cm2) for thermal neutrons and 2.00 × 10?5 ± 0.12 × 10?5 (pC cm2) for epithermal neutrons. This shows that the LBO chamber is sufficiently sensitive to epithermal neutrons to be useful for epithermal neutron monitoring in BNCT irradiation.  相似文献
