Seven men were studied during maximal cycle ergometer exercise, to assess the effects of a single or continuous caffeine ingestion on performance and catecholamine secretion. A single blind and randomised procedure was followed with three trials at 100 +/- 5% VO2 max until exhaustion. The first trial was performed after a single administration of 250 mg of caffeine (a). The second and third trials were performed after a treatment of 5 days with 250 mg caffeine per day (continuous = c) and after placebo (p). a and c caffeine administration, 60 min prior to exercise, did not significantly change the time to exhaustion, but increased the plasma levels of both epinephrine (E) and norepinephrine (NE) at exhaustion (p less than 0.05). Single ingestion of caffeine accelerated the elimination of E and NE and increased the maximal blood lactic acid. These data suggest that both single and continuous administration of caffeine do not enhance performance during maximal cycle ergometer exercise, but do increase the exercise response of catecholamine. Only a single administration modifies the blood lactate accumulation.  相似文献

The influence of a 24 h fast on endurance performance and the metabolic response to maximal cycle exercise was investigated in 6 healthy men (mean +/- SD: age = 27 +/- 7 years; weight = 73 +/- 10 kg; VO2max = 46 +/- 10 ml.kg-1.min-1). Subjects performed in randomised order two exercise bouts to exhaustion separated by one week. Test rides were performed in fasted (F) and post-absorptive (normal-diet, ND) conditions on an electrically braked cycle ergometer at a workload equivalent to 100% of VO2max. Acid-base status and selected metabolites were measured on arterialised venous blood at rest prior to exercise and at intervals for 15 mins following exercise. Exercise time to exhaustion was shorter after F compared with ND (p less than 0.01). Pre-exercise blood bicarbonate (HCO3-) concentration, PCO2 and base excess (BE) were lower after F compared with ND (p less than 0.05). Prior to exercise, circulating concentrations of free fatty acids (FFA), beta-hydroxybutyrate (B-HB) and glycerol were higher after F compared with ND (p less than 0.01) but blood glucose and lactate concentration were not different. On the F treatment, after exercise, blood pH, HCO3-, and BE were all significantly higher (p less than 0.01) than on ND; blood lactate concentration was significantly lower for the whole of the post-exercise period after F compared with ND (p less than 0.01). Six men were studied during exercise to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer at 73% of VO2max following ingestion of glycerol, glucose or placebo. Five of the subjects exercised for longer on the glucose trial compared to the placebo trial (p less than 0.1; 108.8 vs 95.9 min). Exercise time to exhaustion on the glucose trial was longer (p less than 0.01) than on the glycerol trial (86.0 min). No difference in performance was found between the glycerol and placebo trials. The ingestion of glucose (lg X kg-1 body weight) 45 min before exercise produced a 50% rise in blood glucose and a 3-fold rise in plasma insulin at zero min of exercise. Total carbohydrate oxidation was increased by 26% compared to placebo and none of the subjects exhibited a fall in blood glucose below 4 mmol X 1-1 during the exercise. The ingestion of glycerol (lg X kg-1 body weight) 45 min before exercise produced a 340-fold increase in blood glycerol concentration at zero min of exercise, but did not affect resting blood glucose or plasma insulin levels; blood glucose levels were up to 14% higher (p less than 0.05) in the later stages of exercise and at exhaustion compared to the placebo or glucose trials. Both glycerol and glucose feedings lowered the magnitude of the rise in plasma FFA during exercise compared to placebo. Five men were studied during exercise to exhaustion on an electrically braked cycle ergometer at 70% of VO2max. The four experimental treatments were as follows: fasted for 36 h (A); fasted (36 h) and refed with glucose (B) or glycerol (C); postabsorptive (overnight fast, D). In B and C the subjects were given a drink containing glucose or glycerol (1g per kg body weight) 45 min before starting exercise. A placebo drink was given 45 min before exercise on treatments A and D. Despite an increased availability of circulating free fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate and glycerol exercise time to exhaustion was significantly lower after fasting (treatment A 77.7 +/- 6.8 min) compared with treatment D (119.5 +/- 5.8 min). Refeeding with glucose or glycerol did not significantly improve performance (92.4 +/- 11.8 min and 80.8 +/- 3.6 min respectively) compared with treatment A and lowered circulating levels of FFA and beta-HB during exercise compared with A. Despite the probability of low liver glycogen levels after fasting, none of the subjects became hypoglycaemic (blood glucose less than 4 mmol.l-1) during exercise and their blood lactate concentrations were not high at exhaustion. Plasma levels of branched chain amino acids (BCAA) decreased progressively during exercise on treatments A, B and C and were considerably lower at exhaustion compared with treatment D. Falling plasma concentrations of BCAA during prolonged exercise may be implicated in the generation of central fatigue.  相似文献

This study compared the predictive power of a lactate-related index determined during submaximal cycle exercise to that of an exhaustive cycle ergometer test for evaluating the endurance exercise capacity of soldiers. The subjects (n = 48 males) performed a continuous exercise test to voluntary exhaustion on the cycle ergometer. Power output (PO) increased by 50 W steps each fourth min, with determinations of heart rate (HR), RPE and blood lactate concentrations (HLa) just prior to each PO increase. The PO at a 4 mmol L(-1) HLa concentration (WOBLA) was interpolated; based on the time to exhaustion the maximal PO that could be maintained for 6 min (Wmax6) was calculated from previously documented formulae. Subjects were timed during a 3000 m cross-country run. Both the cycle test and the run were performed again 3 months later, as was an additional 3000 m run with full military equipment weighing about 21 kg. All 3000 m times were significantly correlated (p less than 0.05) with both Wmax6 and WOBLA; similar predictive power was demonstrated for both Wmax6 and WOBLA, suggesting that accuracy in evaluation would not be sacrificed by substituting the submaximal for the exhaustive exercise test. HR and RPE-related indices showed markedly lower predictive power. The results extend the previously documented relationship between HLa during treadmill ergometry and running performance to include the use of cycle ergometry for the evaluation of running performance. Sodium citrate and anaerobic performance: implications of dosage   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The use of sodium bicarbonate to improve anaerobic performance is well known but other buffering agents have been used with some success. Sodium citrate is one such substance which has been used but without the normal gastro-intestinal discomfort usually associated with sodium bicarbonate ingestion. The effects of five doses of sodium citrate (0.1 g.kg-1 body mass, 0.2 g.kg-1 body mass, 0.3 g.kg-1 body mass, 0.4 g.kg-1 body mass and 0.5 g.kg-1 body mass) on anaerobic performance were studied in order to determine the minimal and most productive dose required for performance enhancement. A maximal test was performed for 1 min on a cycle ergometer. Total work and peak power were measured at the end of the exercise period. Blood was drawn 1.5 h prior to the test session and measured for pH, partial pressure of carbon dioxide and concentrations of bicarbonate, base excess and lactate. In all but the control and placebo trials subjects then ingested one of five doses of sodium citrate which was contained in 400 ml of flavoured drink. Blood was again taken 90 min later and this was repeated after the completion of the exercise test. The greatest amount of work was completed in the trial with citrate given at 0.5 g.kg-1 body mass (44.63 kJ, SD 1.5) and this was also true for peak power (1306 W, SD 75). The purpose of this study was to examine the resting and exercise response patterns of plasma Peptide F immunoreactivity (ir) to altitude exposure (4300 m) and caffeine ingestion (4 mg.kg b.w.-1). Nine healthy male subjects performed exercise tests to exhaustion (80-85% VO2max) at sea level (50 m), during an acute altitude exposure (1 hr, hypobaric chamber, 4300 m) and after a chronic (17-day sojourn, 4300 m) altitude exposure. Using a randomized, double-blind/placebo experimental design, a placebo or caffeine drink was ingested 1 hour prior to exercise. Exercise (without caffeine) significantly (p less than 0.05) increased plasma Peptide F ir values during exercise at chronic altitude only. Caffeine ingestion significantly increased plasma Peptide F ir concentrations during exercise and in the postexercise period at sea level. Conversely caffeine ingestion at altitude resulted in significant reductions in the postexercise plasma Peptide F ir values. The results of this study demonstrate that the exercise and recovery response patterns of plasma Peptide F ir may be significantly altered by altitude exposure and caffeine ingestion. These data support further study examining relationships between Peptide F (and other enkephalin-containing polypeptides) and epinephrine release in response to these types of physiological stresses.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Duncan, MJ, Smith, M, Cook, K, and James, RS. The acute effect of a caffeine-containing energy drink on mood state, readiness to invest effort, and resistance exercise to failure. J Strength Cond Res 26(10): 2858-2865, 2012-The efficacy of caffeine ingestion in enhancing aerobic performance is well established. The evidence for caffeine's effects on resistance exercise is mixed and has not fully examined the associated psychological and psychophysiological changes. This study examined acute effects of ingesting a caffeine-containing energy drink on repetitions to failure, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and the readiness to invest physical effort (RTIPE) and mental effort during resistance exercise to failure. Thirteen resistance-trained men took part in this double-blind, randomized cross-over experimental study whereby they ingested a caffeinated (179 mg) energy drink or placebo solution 60 minutes before completing a bout of resistance exercise comprising bench press, deadlift, prone row, and back squat exercise to failure at an intensity of 60% 1-repetition maximum. Experimental conditions were separated by at least 48 hours. Participants completed significantly greater repetitions to failure, irrespective of exercise, in the energy drink condition (p = 0.015). Rating of perceived exertion was significantly higher in the placebo condition (p = 0.02) and was significantly higher during lower-body exercises compared with upper-body exercises irrespective of the substance ingested (p = 0.0001). Readiness to invest mental effort was greater with the energy drink condition (p = 0.04), irrespective of time. A significant time × substance interaction (p = 0.036) for RTIPE indicated that RTIPE increased for both placebo and energy drink conditions preingestion to pre-exercise, but the magnitude of increase was greater with the energy drink condition compared with placebo. This resulted in higher RTIPE postexercise for the energy drink condition. These results suggest that acute ingestion of a caffeine-containing energy drink can enhance resistance exercise performance to failure and positively enhance psychophysiological factors related to exertion in trained men.  相似文献

To determine the effects of cycle and run training on rating of perceived exertion at the lactate threshold (LT), college men completed a 40-session training program in 10 weeks (n = 6 run training, n = 5 cycle training, n = 5 controls). Pre- and post-training variables were measured during graded exercise tests on both the bicycle ergometer and treadmill. ANOVA on the pre- and post-training difference scores resulted in similar improvements in VO2max for both testing protocols, regardless of training mode. The run training group increased VO2 at the LT by 58.5% on the treadmill protocol and by 20.3% on the cycle ergometer. Cycle trainers increased VO2 LT only during cycle ergometry (+38.7%). No changes were observed in the control group. No differences for RPE at the LT were found before or after training, or between testing protocols for any group. Perception of exercise intensity at the LT ranged from "very light" to "light". The relationship between RPE and %VO2max was altered by the specific mode of training, with trained subjects having a lower RPE at a given %VO2max (no change in RPE at max.). It was concluded that RPE at the LT was not affected by training, despite the fact that after training the LT occurs at a higher work rate and was associated with higher absolute and relative metabolic and cardiorespiratory demands.  相似文献

The purpose of these experiments was to examine the influence of various fluid replacement drinks on exercise-induced disturbances in homeostasis during heavy exercise. Nine trained cyclists performed constant load exercise on a cycle ergometer to fatigue on three occasions with 1-week separating experiments. The work rate was set initially at approximately 85% of VO2max (range 82-88%) with fatigue being defined as a 10% decline in power output below the initial value. During each experiment subjects consumed one of the following three beverages prior to and every 15 min during exercise: (1) non-electrolyte placebo (NEP; 31 mosmol.kg-1); (2) glucose polymer drink containing electrolytes (GP; 7% CHO, 231 mosmol.kg-1), and (3) electrolyte placebo drink without carbohydrate (EP; 48 mosmol.kg-1). Both the GP and EP beverage contained sodium citrate/citric acid (C) as a flavoring agent while C was not contained in the NEP drink. Although seven of nine subjects worked longer during the GP and EP treatment when compared with the NEP trial, the difference was not significant (P greater than 0.05). No differences (P greater than 0.05) existed between the GP and EP treatments in performance time. This study examined the effect of acute exposure of the whole body to cold on blood lactate response during incremental exercise. Eight subjects were tested with a cycle ergometer in a climatic chamber, room temperature being controlled either at 24 degrees C (MT) or at -2 degrees C (CT). The protocol consisted of a step increment in exercise intensity of 30 W every 2 min until exhaustion. Oxygen consumption (VO2) was measured at rest and during the last minute of each exercise intensity. Blood samples were collected at rest and at exhaustion for estimations of plasma norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E), free fatty acid (FFA) and glucose concentrations, during the last 15 s of each exercise step and also during the 1st, 4th, 7th, and the 10th min following exercise for the determination of blood lactate (LA) concentration. The VO2 was higher during CT than during MT at rest and during nearly every exercise intensity. At CT, lactate anaerobic threshold (LAT), determined from a marked increase of LA above resting level, increased significantly by 49% expressed as absolute VO2, and 27% expressed as exercise intensity as compared with MT. The LA tended to be higher for light exercise intensities and lower for heavy exercise intensities during CT than during MT. The E and NE concentrations increased during exercise, regardless of ambient temperature. Furthermore, at rest and at exhaustion E concentrations did not differ between both conditions, while NE concentrations were greater during CT than during MT. AIMS: This study was designed to explore the plasma oxytocin (OT) response to exercise until exhaustion in trained male cyclists. METHODS: Twelve professional cyclists (EXP group; age: 26 +/- 2 years; VO(2)max: 4,804 +/- 549 ml) and 10 sedentary young men (CONT group; age: 23 +/- 2 years; VO(2)max: 3,146 +/- 602 ml) performed a maximal incremental exercise test on a cycle ergometer. Evaluation was made of the oxygen uptake (VO(2)) and concentrations of blood lactate and plasma OT immediately before, during and immediately after the tests, respectively. RESULTS: Significant increases (p < 0.01) related to exercise were recorded in VO(2) and lactate concentration within each group, while no such changes were observed in OT levels. OT values, on the other hand, were significantly lower (p < 0.01) in EXP than in CONT throughout the tests. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that plasma OT shows no response to graded exercise until exhaustion in professional cyclists.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of caffeine supplementation on sprint cycling performance and to determine if there was a dose-response effect. Using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design, 17 well-trained men (age: 24 ± 6 years, height: 1.82 ± 0.06 m, and body mass(bm): 82.2 ± 6.9 kg) completed 7 maximal 10-second sprint trials on an electromagnetically braked cycle ergometer. Apart from trial 1 (familiarization), all the trials involved subjects ingesting a gelatine capsule containing either caffeine or placebo (maltodextrin) 1 hour before each sprint. To examine dose-response effects, caffeine doses of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 mg·kg bm(-1) were used. There were no significant (p ≥ 0.05) differences in baseline measures of plasma caffeine concentration before each trial (grand mean: 0.14 ± 0.28 μg·ml(-1)). There was, however, a significant supplement × time interaction (p < 0.001), with larger caffeine doses producing higher postsupplementation plasma caffeine levels. In comparison with placebo, caffeine had no significant effect on peak power (p = 0.11), mean power (p = 0.55), or time to peak power (p = 0.17). There was also no significant effect of supplementation on pretrial blood lactate (p = 0.58), but there was a significant time effect (p = 0.001), with blood lactate reducing over the 50 minute postsupplementation rest period from 1.29 ± 0.36 to 1.06 ± 0.33 mmol·L(-1). The results of this study show that caffeine supplementation has no effect on short-duration sprint cycling performance, irrespective of the dosage used.  相似文献

Effects of fluid, electrolyte and substrate ingestion on endurance capacity   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The availability of carbohydrate (CHO) as a substrate for the exercising muscles is known to be a limiting factor in the performance of prolonged cycle exercise, and provision of exogenous CHO in the form of glucose can increase endurance capacity. The present study examined the effects of ingestion of fluids and of CHO in different forms on exercise performance. Six male volunteers exercised to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer at a workload which required approximately 70% of Vo2max. After one preliminary trial, subjects performed this exercise test on six occasions, one week apart. Immediately before exercise, and at 10-min intervals throughout, subjects ingested 100 ml of one of the following: control (no drink), water, glucose syrup, fructose syrup, glucose-fructose syrup or a dilute glucose-electrolyte solution. Each of the syrup solutions contained approximately 36 g CHO per 100 ml; the isotonic glucose-electrolyte solution contained 4 g glucose per 100 ml. A randomised Latin square order of administration of trials was employed. Expired air samples for determination of Vo2, respiratory exchange ratio and rate of CHO oxidation were collected at 15-min intervals. Venous blood samples were obtained before and after exercise. Cold stress and caffeine ingestion are each reported to increase plasma catecholamines, free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations, and energy metabolism. This study examined the possible interaction of these two metabolic challenges in four double-blind counterbalanced trials. Young adult men (n = 6) ingested caffeine (5 mg/kg) or placebo (dextrose, 5 mg/kg) and rested for 2 h in 28 or 5 degrees C air. Cold stress alone elevated (P less than 0.05) plasma norepinephrine, metabolism (O2 consumption, VO2), and respiratory exchange ratio (RER). Caffeine alone increased (P less than 0.05) plasma epinephrine and FFA but not RER. When the two challenges were combined (caffeine plus 5 degrees C for 2 h) norepinephrine and epinephrine were increased (P less than 0.05) as was FFA. However, VO2, RER, and skin and rectal temperatures were not different from the responses observed at 5 degrees C after placebo ingestion. The data suggest that caffeine selectively increases plasma epinephrine, whereas cold air increases norepinephrine. During the cold exposure, increasing epinephrine and FFA above normal levels did not appear to influence the metabolic or thermal responses to the cold stress. In fact the increase in RER suggested a greater carbohydrate oxidation.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine whether the perception of exertion is affected by alcohol during physical performance and whether altered self-rating of exertion is the result of an altered perception per se or of an altered physical capacity to perform work. Ten healthy men participated. Each subject was his own control and received an alcohol dose corresponding to 1 g.kg-1 body mass in 40% solution in the experimental session. The exercise test was performed on a cycle ergometer with an initial intensity of 50 W which was increased stepwise by 50 W at 4-min intervals up to near-maximal. The rating of perceived exertion (RPE) did not differ between alcohol and control sessions. Alcohol induced a significant increase in heart rate during exercise at 50 W (delta x = 8 beats.min-1) and at 100 W (delta x = 10 beats.min-1), while the change at higher intensities was insignificant. The systolic blood pressure and the blood lactate concentration were not significantly changed by alcohol. It is concluded that a moderate dose of alcohol does not alter RPE during physical exercise either per se or secondarily to an altered physical capacity to perform work.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of intense interval training on erythrocyte 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) levels at rest and after maximal exercise. Eight normal men, mean +/- SE = 24.2 +/- 4.3 years, trained 4 days X week-1 for a period of 8 weeks. Each training session consisted of eight maximal 30-s rides on a cycle ergometer, with 4 min active rest between rides . Prior to and after training the subjects performed a maximal 45-s ride on an isokinetic cycle ergometer at 90 rev X min-1 and a graded leg exercise test ( GLET ) to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer. Blood samples were obtained from an antecubital vein before, during and after the GLET only. Training elicited significant increases in the amount of work done during the 45-s ride (P less than 0.05), and also in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max: Pre = 4.01 +/- 0.13; Post = 4.29 +/- 0.07 1 X min-1; P less than 0.05) during exercise and total recovery VO2 (Pre = 19.14 +/- 0.09; Post = 21.45 +/- 0.10 1 X 30 min-1; P less than 0.05) after the GLET . To compare the results obtained by incremental or constant work load exercises in the evaluation of endurance conditioning, a 20-week training programme was performed by 9 healthy human subjects on the bicycle ergometer for 1 h a day, 4 days a week, at 70-80% VO2max. Before and at the end of the training programme, (1) the blood lactate response to a progressive incremental exercise (18 W increments every 2nd min until exhaustion) was used to determine the aerobic and anaerobic thresholds (AeT and AnT respectively). On a different day, (2) blood lactate concentrations were measured during two sessions of constant work load exercises of 20 min duration corresponding to the relative intensities of AeT (1st session) and AnT (2nd session) levels obtained before training. A muscle biopsy was obtained from vastus lateralis at the end of these sessions to determine muscle lactate. AeT and AnT, when expressed as % VO2max, increased with training by 17% (p less than 0.01) and 9% (p less than 0.05) respectively. Constant workload exercise performed at AeT intensity was linked before training (60% VO2max) to a blood lactate steady state (4.8 +/- 1.4 mmol.l-1) whereas, after training, AeT intensity (73% VO2max) led to a blood lactate accumulation of up to 6.6 +/- 1.7 mmol.l-1 without significant modification of muscle lactate (7.6 +/- 3.1 and 8.2 +/- 2.8 mmol.kg-1 wet weight respectively). Summary. To determine the effect of the taurine containing drink "Red Bull" on cardiac parameters thirteen endurance trained subjects performed an exhaustive bout of endurance exercise at three different times. Prior to the exercise the original "Red Bull" drink, a similar drink without taurine, containing caffeine, and a "placebo" drink without caffeine and without taurine were ingested by the subjects in a double-blind cross-over design. Echocardiographic examinations were performed before the drinks, 40 minutes after the drinks prior to the exercise and in the regeneration period after exercise. Stroke volume was significantly influenced only in the "Red Bull group" (80,4 ± 21,4 ml before drink vs. 97,5 ± 26,2 ml in the regeneration period), mainly due to a reduced endsystolic diameter and volume. Furthermore in this group the peak late diastolic inflow (VA) in the regeneration period was significantly higher compared with the pre-exercise levels. This observation was also made in the caffeine group but without any consequences on ventricular function. The results of the present study show an influence of the original caffeine and taurine containing drink (Red Bull) on parameters of the cardiac contractility.
