Anacolosidites Cookson & Pike, a fossil pollen genus recorded since the Campanian, is peculiar in its morphology – six‐porate with three apertures on each hemisphere, located away from the equator, and with the distal and proximal apertures positioned over each other. Representatives of this fossil genus are widely considered to represent extant Olacaceae from tribe Anacoloseae. Olacaceae is an exclusively tropical angiosperm family with a pantropical distribution; consequently the fossils are often used to suggest a tropical climate and in addition are frequently used as a stratigraphic marker. Fossil species assigned to Anacolosidites are quite variable and may not all represent Olacaceae, in which case they may not indicate tropical climate.

The present study is a morphological survey of fossil pollen assigned to Anacolosidites; it identifies the published reports of the fossil species that probably represent positive occurrences of Olacaceae pollen in the fossil record. Within Olacaceae, Anacolosidites‐type pollen is usually compared with pollen of genera in tribe Anacoloseae, in particular: Cathedra, Anacolosa and Phanerodiscus, but never with the pollen of Ptychopetalum, a genus from tribe Olaceae with closely similar pollen to the other three genera, but with a reticulate tectum and very small circular apertures located near the equator. Nevertheless, the records of reticulate Anacolosidites species which have been excluded from the emended diagnosis are unlikely to be related to Ptychopetalum. The earliest accepted record of Anacolosidites is from the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) of Germany. However, most Late Cretaceous records, and later Russian and Chinese occurrences referred to Anacolosidites, consist mainly of Normapolles‐type pollen, whereas many of the Cenozoic records assigned to Anacolosidites have a much clearer affinity with the pollen of Anacolosa, Cathedra and Phanerodiscus (tribe Anacoloseae). The newly emended genus Anacolosidites may be used as a stratigraphic marker for tropical or megathermal climatic conditions.  相似文献

Macrotheca Waagen 1880, previously known only from the Salt Range of Pakistan and from Timor, and Toxeumorphora Shimanskiy, previously known only from the Ural Mountains, have been identified in the Permian of northern East Greenland. The new specimens are assigned to the order Toxeumorphorida which is transferred to the class Hyolitha. The class Xenoconchia tentatively proposed by Shimanskiy two decades ago to include the toxeumorphorids is abandoned. Macrotheca almgreeni n. sp. is described. Flowers of Santalales remain largely unexplored with several questions of homology unanswered despite the large size of the order. Morphological and ontogenetic floral studies have the potential to identify new informative characters. We studied floral development in species of Loranthaceae, Santalaceae, Opiliaceae, and "Olacaceae" with scanning electron microscopy to clarify the origin and evolution of the perianth in Santalales. The perianth is either dichlamydeous or when monochlamydeous interpreted as sepals, petals, or tepals. A girdling calyculus of debatable origin is found in some clades. We show that species of Diogoa and Heisteria in "Olacaceae" have a dichlamydeous perianth, unlike Olax in which the calyx is replaced by a calyculus. The calyculus arises by development of two lateral primordia, supporting the hypothesis of bracteole origin. A calyculus with similar development is present in species of Loranthaceae and possibly of Opiliaceae, suggesting a position of Olax closer to these families than to traditional genera of "Olacaceae". The monochlamydeous perianth in Santalaceae is shown to correspond to petals of other members of Santalales. Flower ontogenetic evidence suggests a repeated loss of the calyx, replacement by a calyculus, and further loss, leading to monochlamydeous perianths in Santalaceae.  相似文献

Gross morphology and internal structure of haustoria of Olaxphyllanthi are described in parasitism with a range of hosts,including roots of woody and herbaceous dicotyledons and certainmonocotyledons, and occasional instances of autoparasitism andhaustorial formation on monocotyledon rhizomes. Successful penetrationto xylem occurs on virtually all hosts across broad diameters,ages and anatomies of host root, but anatomical impedimentsto haustorial establishment and penetration are recorded forcertain host taxa. Each haustorium is a comparatively simpleand ephemeral structure. Its developing sucker (endophytic regionof the haustorium) spreads laterally around the surface of thehost xylem, yet never completely encircles the host stele. Damageto hosts is minimal and secondary thickening (of hosts) continueson the side of a host root opposite to a haustorium. The haustorialsucker lacks phloem and its interface with host xylem is comprisedalmost entirely (more than 98.7%) of parenchyma. The few terminatingtracheids at an interface lie in very close proximity to oroccasionally directly against exposed xylem vessels, but lumento lumen continuity between tracheary elements of the partnersis not achieved. Three dimensional reconstructions based onserial transverse sectioning indicate that well defined filesof tracheids connect back from an interface to the core of graniferoustracheary elements in the external body of the haustorium, andthence to the xylem of the parent parasite root. Plant hydroxynitrile lyases (Hnl) have attracted the attention of bioorganic scientists for more than 90 years. However, the most important increase in knowledge of this class of enzymes has only arisen in the recent decade. The industrial application of these enzymes as biocatalysts for the synthesis of enantiomerically pure α-cyanohydrins may be responsible for the growing interest in this area.
The Hnls are involved in the catabolic degradation of cyanogenic glycosides, releasing HCN which serves as defense agent against herbivores and microbial attack, or as a nitrogen source. Hydroxynitrile lyases from various plant families appear to represent a new example of enzymes that originated from the convergent evolution of different precursor proteins. The enzymes have been classified into non-FAD- and FAD-containing proteins. FAD-containing enzymes have been isolated exclusively from the Rosaceae, whereas the FAD-independent Hnls, which are more heterogenous in structure, have been characterized from various plant families (Poaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Linaceae, Olacaceae. Filitaceae). The aim of this review is to present a general survey of the natural function and localization of this class of enzymes and a comprehensive summary of the biochemical and genetic data of the isolated proteins.  相似文献

Neurosecretory cells of only one type (A, sub type A2) are seen in adult Melanoplus. Two groups of about 400 cells each are located dorsally in the pars intercerebralis medialis; four cells are located deep within the protocerebrum. We found no neurosecretory cells in other parts of the central or sympathetic nervous systems. In about 10% of the specimens, there was marked asymmetry in the location of the dorsal cell groups, with both of these groups and their axons located in one lobe of the protocerebrum. The nervi corporis cardiaci 1 cross-over in the corpus cardiacum, with the result that material produced by neurosecretory cells on one side of the brain is transported along axons that undergo two chiasmata to the corpus cardiacum of the same side. Stainable secretory material could be traced clearly from the cerebral cells to the corpus cardiacum, and even into the oesophageal nerves from the hypocerebral ganglion. However, stainable neurosecretory material is never present in the corpus allatum or along any of the nerves to this gland.  相似文献

In zygotes of the brown alga Scytosiphon lomentaria (Lyngb.) Link, cytokinesis proceeds by growth of membranous sacs, which are formed by fusion of Golgi vesicles and flat cisternae accumulated at the future cytokinetic plane. It has been reported that depolymerization of actin filaments by latrunculin B does not inhibit mitosis. However, this molecule prevents the formation of the actin plate, which appears at the region of intermingled microtubules from each centrosome just before and during cytokinesis. In this study, zygotes treated with latrunculin B were observed using EM. Remarkably, this reagent inhibited the formation of flat cisternae. Golgi vesicles gathered around the midzone between the two daughter nuclei and fused with the plasma membrane there. As a result, the plasma membrane invaginated, in a complicated manner, into the cytoplasm. However, these invaginations of the plasma membrane never produced a continuous partition membrane. The ultrastructure of zygotes treated with brefeldin A, which prevents Golgi‐mediated secretion, was also examined. Flat cisternae appeared at the future cytokinetic plane, and a new cell partition membrane was formed. However, the partition membrane became thick, because it was filled with amorphous material rather than the normal rigid fibrous material. These results suggested that actin is involved in the formation of flat cisternae, where it is necessary for completion of the new cell partition membrane, and that Golgi vesicles may play an important role in the deposition of cell wall material.  相似文献

Abstract By definition, Aeromonas salmonicida is found in fish but never in surface water. However, this does not explain the reason for explosive out-breaks of furunculosis among populations of salmonid fish which have never been exposed to the disease. Evidence is presented, from laboratory-based experiments, which show that A. salmonicida survives in freshwater, beyond the period necessary for plate counts to reach zero. These cells may subsequently be re-activated by the addition of nutrient. It may be assumed, therefore, that A. salmonicida survives outside of fish, by entering a dormant phase.  相似文献

应用叶绿体DNAtrnL内含子序列分析檀香目科间的系统发育关系。取样研究的檀香目个体的trnL内含子序列长度在科间呈现较大差异(从291bp到587bp)。最大简约性分析产生的严格一致树与以前已发表的基于其它基因的檀香目的分子系统学研究结果大体一致。香芙木属(铁青树科)是最早分支出的类群:桑寄生科、槲寄生科分别表现为单系类群,檀香科为并系;桑寄生科和槲寄生科并不具密切亲缘关系,槲寄生科从檀香科内衍生出来。本研究表明,具相对高的核苷酸替换率的叶绿体DNAtrnL内含子序列可为高等级类群系统发育关系的研究提供更多的信息位点。  相似文献

The epidermal anatomy of Barthelopteris germarii, a late Paleozoic seed fern, is described on the basis of material from the Upper Stephanian of Central France. A number of features are described for the first time for this species. Some have never been reported for late Paleozoic pteridosperms. Although our material is in most respects very similar to previously described material of B. germarii from Germany, there are also some striking differences, especially the peltate glandular trichomes that are very common in the French but completely absent in the German material. Their presence is most probably an ecological adaptation as in many modern plants. This and other epidermal and gross-morphological features (e.g., the presence of papillae on subsidiary cells of the stomata, anastomosing venation) indicate that B. germarii was well adapted to stressed conditions. Of more general interest is the preservation of the material. There appears to exist a clear relationship between the preservation of anticlinal walls and the thickness of the parenchymatic mesophyll; anticlinal walls are very well preserved where parenchyma was thin. Therefore, the absence of anticlinal walls in fossil cuticles, which has often been used as a taxonomic character, is not necessarily a primary feature.  相似文献

Alcoholic infusions of Ptychopetalum olacoides Bentham (PO, Olacaceae) are used in traditional medicine by patients presenting age associated symptoms and those recovering from stroke. The aim of this study is to evaluate the neuroprotective properties of PO ethanol extract (POEE) using hippocampal slices from Wistar rats exposed to oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD, followed by reoxygenation). Mitochondrial activity, an index of cell viability, was assessed by the MTT assay; in addition, the free radicals content was estimated by the use of dichlorofluorescein diacetate as probe. The OGD ischemic condition significantly impaired cellular viability, and increased free radicals generation. In non-OGD slices, incubation with POEE (0.6 microg/ml) increased (approximately 40%) mitochondrial activity, without affecting free radicals levels. In comparison to OGD controls, slices incubated with POEE (0.6 microg/ml) during and after OGD exposure had significantly increased cellular viability. In addition, at this same concentration, POEE prevented the increase of free radicals content induced by OGD. In view of the fact that respiratory chain inhibition and increased generation of free radicals are major consequences of the ischemic injury, this study suggests that Ptychopetalum olacoides contains useful neuroprotective compounds and, therefore, deserves further scrutiny.  相似文献

Migraine with aura is a complex phenomena, which remains still not completely understood. A striking fact is that its clinical manifestations may change from one patient to another. Migraine with aura may only consist in visual hallucinations, but may as well go on to temporary aphasy. However, for all the patients it always stops before it goes from area 3 to area 4, thus just before crossing Rolando sulcus. In this paper, we give arguments showing that the detailed geometry of Rolando sulcus in human cortex may by itself explain that migraine attack never crosses Rolando sulcus.  相似文献

There is a growing concern about the sustainability of our humanosphere. Realizing that our consumption of natural resources is soon to exhaust available ones in this globe, we feel the need for more prudent ways to utilize them. In particular, the need would be greater in the ways for the use of the primary products as we are to continue to face the rapid increase in human population. On the contrary, however, we are rapidly losing the traditional customs of their many uses. For instance, rice straws were once a significant raw material for many manufactured products in Japan, while most of them are now simply burned in the paddy. Here I would like to review the current status of primary production on the Earth from the viewpoint of material cycling and to demonstrate that, unless we quickly turn around our ever-increasing demand for more material and more energy, the humanosphere would never enter a stable phase. At the year 2006 A.D., the energy demand of a possibly sustainable humanosphere surpasses the available energy through the global primary production.  相似文献

Schistosoma mansoni eggs were found in a latrine dated AD 1450-1550 in Montbéliard, France. This is the first record of intestinal schistosomiasis in archaeological material. The relation between the endoplasmic reticulum and peribacteroid membranes during the development of infected cells of Chinese soybean (Glycine max L. cv. Harvest 11) root nodules by transmission electron microscopy was observed. After the host cells are infected by bacteria, the ultrastructures of the infected cells appear to have many changes, such as that their cytoplasm becomes thicker, the vacuoles decrease in size and organelles rapidly increase in number, among these organelle changes are more obvious than the others. However, changes of endoplasmic reticulum is mostly striking. It is not only increases greatly in number but often swells and forms wider inter-spaces. The swelling of endoplasmic reticulum is especially conspicuous at its ends and often form various vesicles. Sometimes, the front part of the endoplasmic reticulum also forms a gourd-shaped structure, which together with the vesicles usually contain fibrillar material. After they are released from the endoplasmic reticulum to the host cytoplasm, they continuously move towards neighbouring bacteria and close to the peribacteroid membranes. The gourd-shaped structures always locate near but never fuse with the peribacteroid membranes. However, the vesicles can do that and form a kind of papillae, often containing fibrillar material, on the peri bacteroid membranes. These papillae and their fibrillar material gradually disappear whilst the membrane of the vesicle derived from endoplasmic reticulum becomes one part of the peribacteroid membrane by way of fusing with the latter to form a papilla on it.  相似文献

Linnaeus's personal collection of fishes was part of the material purchased by J. E. Smith in 1783–1784 from Linnaeus's widow and which became the property of the Linnean Society of London in 1828. There are extant 168 dried specimens of fishes, mostly skins mounted on paper in the manner of herbarium specimens. The spirit-preserved material which belonged to Linnaeus was never sent from Sweden.
The history of the collection is recounted, and the sources of the specimens discussed. A catalogue of the collection is presented with discussion of the type status of the specimens and the sources for the typification of each taxon.  相似文献
